It is not rare that newly hatched chicks remain without feed for about 24 to 48 h before they are placed on farms due to a series of logistic operations. Furthermore, the spread in hatching time can also mount up to 30 to 48 h for late v. early hatchers. In other words, the practice is a complex combination of spread of hatch and delayed feed access. The present study was aimed to investigate the combined effects of hatching time with a delay in feed access of 48 h, starting from their hatch-time (biological age). When chicks had access to feed immediately after hatch, late hatchers had a higher feed intake and relative growth rate up to day 5 compared with their early hatched counterparts. Feed deprivation during the first 48 h resulted in retarded early growth rate, which was further aggravated by an impaired feed intake after refeeding. In addition, the differential effects of hatching time on relative growth rate and feed intake observed in immediately fed chicks were eliminated by the 48 h feed delay. The yolk utilization after hatch was faster for the late hatchers up to biological day 2 regardless of the feeding treatments. Hatching muscle glycogen content was higher in the late hatchers compared with that of their early counterparts at hatch and at biological day 2 independent of feeding treatment. Moreover, the liver glycogen content of the late hatchers was also higher at hatch. For the immediately fed chicks, the proportional breast muscle weight of the late hatchers was higher at biological day 2 and 5. For the starved chicks, on the other hand, this effect was only observed after they had access to feed (biological day 5). The different plasma T3 levels at hatch may have contributed to the different post hatch performance. It is concluded that the spread of hatch influenced post hatch performance, especially appetite and growth at least until day 5. Moreover, the delay in feed access interacted with the hatching time and caused adverse effects on the post hatch performance.  相似文献

The acute effects of zinc (Zn) were evaluated in the symbiont-bearing foraminifer Amphistegina lessonii from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (Northeastern Brazil). Foraminifers were acutely (48 h) exposed to dissolved Zn concentrations ranging from 9.5 to 93.4 μg Zn/l. Endpoints analyzed included mortality, visual alterations (white spots and dark-brown areas in the test), oxidative stress biomarkers (reactive oxygen species generation, lipid peroxidation and total superoxide dismutase activity), and concentration of metallothionein-like proteins in whole individuals after Zn exposure. No significant mortality was observed during the 48-h exposure period to waterborne Zn. However, a significant percentage of individuals showed visual alterations (white spots and/or dark-brown areas in the test) after 24 and 48 h of Zn exposure. In fact, a significant positive correlation between this endpoint and dissolved Zn concentrations was observed for both times of exposure. Based on this endpoint, the 24-h and 48-h EC50 values and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals for total measured Zn concentrations were calculated as 112.2 (86.5 - 199.5) and 43.6 (34.9 - 57.3) μg Zn/l, respectively. Based on the dissolved Zn concentrations, they were 100.7 (75.3 - 175.9) and 38.2 (29.7 - 49.4) μg Zn/l, respectively. Therefore, a significant increase in Zn toxicity was observed with increasing time of exposure. After 48 h of Zn exposure, whole body antioxidant capacity was lower in normal-appearing individuals than in those at the initial stage of bleaching. Increases in lipid peroxidation, metallothionein-like protein concentration and total SOD activity was observed at a greater extent in pale/partly-bleached individuals associated with an increased Zn toxicity measured as visual alterations. These findings suggest that an activation of some components of the antioxidant system occurred in A. lessonii to counteract the oxidative stress induced by Zn exposure, and consequently avoid a possible complete loss of the symbiont.  相似文献

Chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, tested monocularly on day 3 after hatching recognize familiar versus unfamiliar conspecifics and choose to approach one or other when they use the left eye, whereas they approach familiar and unfamiliar chicks at random when they use the right eye. In experiment 1 we investigated the effects of light exposure of embryos prior to hatching on this particular form of lateralization. Irrespective of whether they hatched from eggs incubated in the dark or from eggs exposed to light during the final days of incubation, chicks using the left eye had higher choice scores (meaning they chose to approach either a familiar or an unfamiliar chick) than chicks using the right eye or both eyes. Therefore, light experience prior to hatching did not influence the lateralization of individual recognition or choice behaviour, although it did affect latency to move out of, and time spent in, the centre of the runway. Experiment 2 showed that visual/social experience posthatching influences choice behaviour: chicks housed in a group in the light for 12 h on day 1 posthatching made a clear choice between familiar and unfamiliar chicks when tested on day 3, but chicks kept in a group in the dark on day 1 did not make a choice, instead alternating between the two stimuli. In experiment 3 we found that posthatching visual/social experience increased the choice scores of chicks using the right eye and thereby removed any lateralization of choice behaviour. The results suggest that visual experience of a social group is required before chicks using their right eye (and left hemisphere) will pay attention to the cues that distinguish one chick from another. Chicks using their left eye (and right hemisphere) recognize the difference between individuals without requiring visual experience with other chicks. Background

Clinically, plantar fasciitis (PF) is believed to be a result and/or prolonged by overpronation and excessive loading, but there is little biomechanical data to support this assertion. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between healthy individuals and those with PF in (1) rearfoot motion, (2) medial forefoot motion, (3) first metatarsal phalangeal joint (FMPJ) motion, and (4) ground reaction forces (GRF).

Methods

We recruited healthy (n=22) and chronic PF individuals (n=22, symptomatic over three months) of similar age, height, weight, and foot shape (p>0.05). Retro-reflective skin markers were fixed according to a multi-segment foot and shank model. Ground reaction forces and three dimensional kinematics of the shank, rearfoot, medial forefoot, and hallux segment were captured as individuals walked at 1.35 ms−1.

Results

Despite similarities in foot anthropometrics, when compared to healthy individuals, individuals with PF exhibited significantly (p<0.05) (1) greater total rearfoot eversion, (2) greater forefoot plantar flexion at initial contact, (3) greater total sagittal plane forefoot motion, (4) greater maximum FMPJ dorsiflexion, and (5) decreased vertical GRF during propulsion.

Conclusion

These data suggest that compared to healthy individuals, individuals with PF exhibit significant differences in foot kinematics and kinetics. Consistent with the theoretical injury mechanisms of PF, we found these individuals to have greater total rearfoot eversion and peak FMPJ dorsiflexion, which may put undue loads on the plantar fascia. Meanwhile, increased medial forefoot plantar flexion at initial contact and decreased propulsive GRF are suggestive of compensatory responses, perhaps to manage pain.  相似文献

In the praying mantis, vision plays a major role even in newly hatched nymphs, which have compound eyes that are not yet fully developed. This study examines how this factor affects the visual orientation behavior of freely mobile Mantis religiosa. Mantises from three age groups (nymphs newly hatched to 2 h old, three-day-old nymphs, and three- to four-month-old female and male adults) were placed in a completely unprotected open area, either with or without visual cues in the surroundings. As a visual cue, five vertical rods with high-, medium- or low-luminance contrast, having a vertical extension of 45° and overall horizontal extension of 40°, were presented at a distance of 300 mm, simulating a group of plant stems with differing contrasts. The mantis search behavior, probability of reaction to the visual cues, distance at which the first target-related reaction occurred, and target approach behavior were investigated. It was found that the search behavior differed in the different age groups. With high-contrast visual cues, newly hatched nymphs performed similarly to adults, but this was not the case for medium- and low-contrast visual cues. Visual performance was greatly improved 3 days after hatching, presumably due to the complete hardening of the cuticle. Nevertheless, despite differences in visual acuity, it was found that even newly hatched nymphs used visual orientation mechanisms similar to those of adult mantises, including fixation, scanning and peering.  相似文献

1. The development of liver and skeletal muscle oxidative capacities during hatching of the common eider (Somateria mollissima) in the Arctic has been investigated by monitoring tissue cytochrome c oxidase activity. 2. The specific activity of the liver enzyme did not change as the embryo underwent hatching, nor during subsequent growth of the duckling into adulthood. 3. Thigh muscle enzyme specific activity increased by a factor of 3.4 during the 24 h prehatching period, remained elevated for at least 48 h after hatching, and then returned to the embryonic (-24 h) level in adults. 4. Histochemically visualized NADH-tetrazolium reductase of a typical red thigh muscle, M. vastus lateralis, showed a distinct increase in activity as the hatching process progressed to completion. 5. Electron microscopy of sectioned M. vastus lateralis revealed a dramatic increase in the density of the myofibrillar structure (number of mitochondrial profiles per unit area), and in the surface area of mitochondrial crista membranes in the course of the 48 h interval from 1 day prehatching to 1 day after hatching. 6. The significance of these changes for the scaling of thermoregulatory heat generation in the newly hatched eider duckling is discussed.  相似文献

Background

Schistosome eggs must traverse tissues of the intestine or bladder to escape the human host and further the life cycle. Escape from host tissues is facilitated by secretion of immuno-reactive molecules by eggs and the formation of an intense strong granulomatous response by the host which acts to exclude the egg into gut or bladder lumens. Schistosome eggs hatch on contact with freshwater, but the mechanisms of activation and hatching are poorly understood. In view of the lack of knowledge of the behaviour of egg hatching in schistosomes, we undertook a detailed dynamic and correlative study of the hatching biology of Schistosoma japonicum.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Hatching eggs of S. japonicum were studied using correlative light and electron microscopy (EM). The hatching behaviour was recorded by video microscopy. EM preparative methods incorporating high pressure freezing and cryo-substitution were used to investigate ultrastructural features of the miracidium and extra-embryonic envelopes in pre-activated and activated eggs, and immediately after eggshell rupture. Lectin cytochemistry was performed on egg tissues to investigate subcellular location of specific carbohydrate groups.

Conclusions/Significance

The hatching of S. japonicum eggs is a striking phenomenon, whereby the larva is liberated explosively while still encapsulated within its sub-shell envelopes. The major alterations that occur in the egg during activation are scission of the outer envelope-eggshell boundary, autolysis of the cellular inner envelope, and likely hydration of abundant complex and simple polysaccharides in the lacunal space between the miracidial larva and surrounding envelopes. These observations on hatching provide insight into the dynamic activity of the eggs and the biology of schistosomes within the host.  相似文献

During light organ colonization of the squid Euprymna scolopes by Vibrio fischeri, host-derived mucus provides a surface upon which environmental V. fischeri forms a biofilm and aggregates prior to colonization. In this study we defined the temporal and spatial characteristics of this process. Although permanent colonization is specific to certain strains of V. fischeri, confocal microscopy analyses revealed that light organ crypt spaces took up nonspecific bacteria and particles that were less than 2 μm in diameter during the first hour after hatching. However, within 2 h after inoculation, these cells or particles were not detectable, and further entry by nonspecific bacteria or particles appeared to be blocked. Exposure to environmental gram-negative or -positive bacteria or bacterial peptidoglycan caused the cells of the organ's superficial ciliated epithelium to release dense mucin stores at 1 to 2 h after hatching that were used to form the substrate upon which V. fischeri formed a biofilm and aggregated. Whereas the uncolonized organ surface continued to shed mucus, within 48 h of symbiont colonization mucus shedding ceased and the formation of bacterial aggregations was no longer observed. Eliminating the symbiont from the crypts with antibiotics restored the ability of the ciliated fields to secrete mucus and aggregate bacteria. While colonization by V. fischeri inhibited mucus secretion by the surface epithelium, secretion of host-derived mucus was induced in the crypt spaces. Together, these data indicate that although initiation of mucus secretion from the superficial epithelium is nonspecific, the inhibition of mucus secretion in these cells and the concomitant induction of secretion in the crypt cells are specific to natural colonization by V. fischeri.  相似文献

The levels of ecdysteroids in control and leg-autotomized first-instar nymphs of Blattella germanica were determined by radioimmunoassay from hatching to the time of the first ecdysis. Uninjured nymphs showed a distinct release of ecdysteroids half-way through the stadium, and this resulted in the commencement of the moult cycle which formed the cuticle of the second instar. Cockroaches which had legs autotomized at 48 h after hatching (i.e. before the control ecydsteroid release) had their instar duration increased by that time period. Releases of ecdysteroids and events of the moulting cycle were also postponed by the 48 h period. The titre of ecdysteroids in injured animals was double that of controls. Nymphs were also autotomized at 96 h (i.e. after the normal release of ecdysteroids) but no changes in instar duration, ecdysteroid releases, or events of the moult cycle were recorded. The effects of injury, prothoracicotropic hormone activity and ecdysteroid release are discussed.  相似文献

Introduction

Complex regional pain syndrome is characterized by pain, allodynia, hyperalgesia, edema, signs of vasomotor instability, movement disorders, joint stiffness, and regional osteopenia. It is recognized to be difficult to treat, despite various methods of treatment, including physiotherapy, calcitonin, corticosteroids, sympathetic blockade, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Pathophysiologically, complex regional pain syndrome reveals enhanced regional bone resorption and high bone turnover, and so bisphosphonates, which have a potent inhibitory effect on bone resorption, were proposed for the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome.

Case presentation

A 48-year-old Japanese man with complex regional pain syndrome type I had severe right ankle pain with a visual analog scale score of 59 out of 100 regardless of treatment with physiotherapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for five months. Radiographs showed marked regional osteoporotic changes and bone scintigraphy revealed a marked increase in radioactivity in his ankle. One month after the start of oral administration of risedronate (2.5 mg per day), his bone pain had fallen from a VAS score of 59 out of 100 to 18 out of 100. Bone scintigraphy at 12 months showed a marked reduction in radioactivity to a level comparable to that in his normal, left ankle. On the basis of these results, the treatment was discontinued at 15 months. At 32 months, our patient had almost no pain and radiographic findings revealed that the regional osteoporotic change had returned to normal.A second 48-year-old Japanese man with complex regional pain syndrome type I had severe right foot pain with a visual analog scale score of 83 out of 100 regardless of treatment with physiotherapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for nine months. Radiographs showed regional osteoporotic change in his phalanges, metatarsals, and tarsals, and bone scintigraphy revealed a marked increase in radioactivity in his foot. One month after the start of oral administration of alendronate (35 mg per week), his bone pain had fallen from a visual analog scale score of 83 out of 100 to 30 out of 100 and, at nine months, was further reduced to 3 out of 100. The treatment was discontinued at 15 months because of successful pain reduction. At 30 months, our patient had no pain and the radiographic findings revealed marked improvement in regional osteoporotic changes.

Conclusions

We believe low-dose oral administration of bisphosphonate is worth considering for the treatment of idiopathic complex regional pain syndrome type I accompanied by regional osteoporotic change.

Background

Individuals with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) are at increased risk for schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Given the prevalence of visual processing deficits in these three disorders, a causal relationship between genes in the deleted region of chromosome 22 and visual processing is likely. Therefore, 22q11DS may represent a unique model to understand the neurobiology of visual processing deficits related with ASD and psychosis.

Methodology

We measured Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) during a texture segregation task in 58 children with 22q11DS and 100 age-matched controls. The C1 component was used to index afferent activity of visual cortex area V1; the texture negativity wave provided a measure for the integrity of recurrent connections in the visual cortical system. COMT genotype and plasma proline levels were assessed in 22q11DS individuals.

Principal Findings

Children with 22q11DS showed enhanced feedforward activity starting from 70 ms after visual presentation. ERP activity related to visual feedback activity was reduced in the 22q11DS group, which was seen as less texture negativity around 150 ms post presentation. Within the 22q11DS group we further demonstrated an association between high plasma proline levels and aberrant feedback/feedforward ratios, which was moderated by the COMT 158 genotype.

Conclusions

These findings confirm the presence of early visual processing deficits in 22q11DS. We discuss these in terms of dysfunctional synaptic plasticity in early visual processing areas, possibly associated with deviant dopaminergic and glutamatergic transmission. As such, our findings may serve as a promising biomarker related to the development of schizophrenia among 22q11DS individuals.  相似文献

δ-Crystallin is the principal protein synthesized in the embryonic chicken lens. After hatching δ-crystallin synthesis decreases and eventually ceases. We have determined when the δ-crystallin messenger RNA (mRNA) disappears from the lens fiber cells during the first year of age by cell-free translation of lens RNA in a reticulocyte lysate, RNA blot (Northern) hybridization, and in situ hybridization. The hybridization was performed with a nick-translated, cloned δ-crystallin cDNA (pδCr2). δ-Crystallin mRNA was present in the lens until 3 months of age and disappeared between the third and fifth month after hatching. The in situ hybridization experiments indicated that the δ-crystallin mRNA was present throughout the lens fiber mass until 1 month after hatching and was greatly reduced in the cortical fiber cells thereafter. In contrast to earlier stages, then, the cortical fiber cells differentiating at the lens equator after about 1 month of age do not accumulate δ-crystallin mRNA. The data also indicate that the maximal half-life of functional δ-crystallin mRNA in the posthatched chicken lens is about 2 months.  相似文献

We first examined the pH change of the albumen of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) eggs before and after they were laid, as well as that of laid eggs. The pH rose rapidly after laying and continued to increase gradually in storage. Incubation at 37.5°C accelerated the increase in the pH of infertile eggs, while that of fertile eggs remained low during incubation. Referring to these results, we obtained a protocol for producing quail hatchlings by culture in vitro from naked ova. The naked ovum was filled with chicken (Gallus domesticus) thick albumen, the pH of which had been adjusted to 7.2–7.4. The ovum was cultured at 41.5°C in 20% CO2 in air for the first 24 h. Then the embryo was moved to a surrogate quail egg shell that had been filled with non-pH-adjusted chicken thin albumen and cultured for a further 48 h in 100% air. The embryo was transferred again to a surrogate chicken egg shell and cultured under the same conditions until hatching. The culture yielded quail chicks with a hatchability of 19.4%. The method proposed here should be applicable to the production of transgenic birds.  相似文献

We herein provide the first observations on planulation, larval development, and metamorphosis of Siderastrea stellata, an endemic reef-building species that occurs along the northeastern and southeastern coasts of Brazil. The release and settlement of larvae were observed in two distinct periods. The first started 3 days after collection on January 28 during the last quarter, whereas the second started 2 months later, on April 10 during the change from new moon to the first quarter. Planulation continued throughout approximately 48 h. Brooded larvae released from the mouth contained zooxanthellae, and underwent settlement after 48 h. Newly extruded larvae stayed in close contact with parental polyps. Fusion was observed among larvae from the same colony. The first septal cycle was formed by day 2–3, while the third cycle of exosepta became evident 15 days after protosepta development. The development of the corallite of primary polyp was slow, and after 9 months of analyses no evidence of budding was obtained, this indicating that colonial development is likely to be a late event in the S. stellata life history.  相似文献

Background

Sound production is widespread among fishes and accompanies many social interactions. The literature reports twenty-nine cichlid species known to produce sounds during aggressive and courtship displays, but the precise range in behavioural contexts is unclear. This study aims to describe the various Oreochromis niloticus behaviours that are associated with sound production in order to delimit the role of sound during different activities, including agonistic behaviours, pit activities, and reproduction and parental care by males and females of the species.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Sounds mostly occur during the day. The sounds recorded during this study accompany previously known behaviours, and no particular behaviour is systematically associated with sound production. Males and females make sounds during territorial defence but not during courtship and mating. Sounds support visual behaviours but are not used alone. During agonistic interactions, a calling Oreochromis niloticus does not bite after producing sounds, and more sounds are produced in defence of territory than for dominating individuals. Females produce sounds to defend eggs but not larvae.

Conclusion/Significance

Sounds are produced to reinforce visual behaviours. Moreover, comparisons with O. mossambicus indicate two sister species can differ in their use of sound, their acoustic characteristics, and the function of sound production. These findings support the role of sounds in differentiating species and promoting speciation. They also make clear that the association of sounds with specific life-cycle roles cannot be generalized to the entire taxa.  相似文献

In the embryonic stages prior to hatching, the contact-contentment call of the Peking duck (domesticated Anas platyrhynchos) is more highly variable (2–6 notes/s) than it is after hatching (4–6 notes/s). The embryos must be exposed to the normally wide range of repetition rates of their contact-contentment call (2, 4, 6 notes/s) if their preference for the species maternal call is to be normal at 24 h after hatching. Exposure of muted embryos to the higher (4, 6 notes/s) or lower (2, 4 notes/s) portions of the normal range was ineffective. Thus the normally highly variable nature of the embryo's vocalizations fits the requirements of its developing auditory system. An embryonic critical period was also demonstrated: when muted hatchlings were exposed to the rates typical of the postnatal period (4, 6 notes/s), or even the more widely variable rates of the embryonic period (2, 4, 6 notes/s), they failed to show a preference for the normal maternal call at 24 or 48 h after hatching. Thus the precise developmental linkage involves maturational stage as well as the representativeness of the stimulation.  相似文献

Zebrafish embryos were exposed intra ovo to a 50 Hz AC magnetic field of 1000 microT rms, and the progress of asynchronous hatching was monitored. A statistically significant delay was observed when field exposure started 48 h after fertilization. In contrast, when exposure started 2 h after fertilization, no statistically significant effect was seen. When field exposure was administered together with submaximal doses of progesterone at 48 h postfertilization, the two treatments appeared to delay hatching in an additive manner. Evaluating the progress of hatching in zebrafish embryos seems relevant for exploration of EMF effects on reproduction.  相似文献

Of the seven sea turtle species, the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) exhibits the lowest and most variable nest success (i.e., hatching success and emergence success) for reasons that remain largely unknown. In an attempt to identify or rule out causes of low reproductive success in this species, we established the largest sample size (n = 60–70 for most values) of baseline blood parameters (protein electrophoresis, hematology, plasma biochemistry) for this species to date. Hematologic, protein electrophoretic and biochemical values are important tools that can provide information regarding the physiological condition of an individual and population health as a whole. It has been proposed that the health of nesting individuals affects their reproductive output. In order to establish correlations with low reproductive success in leatherback sea turtles from Florida, we compared maternal health indices to hatching success and emergence success of their nests. As expected, hatching success (median = 57.4%) and emergence success (median = 49.1%) in Floridian leatherbacks were low during the study period (2007–2008 nesting seasons), a trend common in most nesting leatherback populations (average global hatching success = ∼50%). One protein electrophoretic value (gamma globulin protein) and one hematologic value (red blood cell count) significantly correlated with hatching success and emergence success. Several maternal biochemical parameters correlated with hatching success and/or emergence success including alkaline phosphatase activity, blood urea nitrogen, calcium, calcium∶phosphorus ratio, carbon dioxide, cholesterol, creatinine, and phosphorus. Our results suggest that in leatherbacks, physiological parameters correlate with hatching success and emergence success of their nests. We conclude that long-term and comparative studies are needed to determine if certain individuals produce nests with lower hatching success and emergence success than others, and if those individuals with evidence of chronic suboptimal health have lower reproductive success.  相似文献

Giant Australian cuttlefish form a mass spawning aggregation at a single site in northern Spencer Gulf (NSG) in South Australia every austral winter. Samples of cuttlefish were collected from this region over three consecutive years. Analysis of regular growth increments in the cuttlebones of these individuals, revealed a polymorphism in growth pattern for both sexes. Three distinct “bone patterns” were identified based on the variation in increment widths over the lengths of the bones. All bones analysed conformed to one of the three bone patterns, and the increment width patterns were consistent between years. Interpretation of the patterns, suggested that Sepia apama have two alternative life cycles. The first involves rapid juvenile growth during the first summer after hatching, with maturity reached within 7–8 months. These individuals return to spawn in their first year as small individuals. The second life cycle involves much slower juvenile growth during the first summer, with maturity deferred until their second year, when they return to spawn as much larger individuals. Thus, the age compositions of populations of S. apama in the NSG appear to consist of two year classes for both sexes.  相似文献
