The ERPs to familiar, unfamiliar, and recently learned words were recorded in 20 right-handed students who have recently studied a course in sensory physiology during performance of two tasks. The first task consisted in processing of different types of words, the second task required recognition of terms from sensory physiology. In the first task, three types of words were presented to a subject: familiar words related and unrelated to a given category and unfamiliar words. Subjects had to press the appropriate button responding to the questions whether they considered the presented word be related to the given category and whether they were sure in their answer. In the second task, terms from recently studied physiological material were presented to the students who had to detect whether those terms were related or unrelated to the given sensory system. Significant differences between late ERP components were revealed by Student test for matched samples. In the first task, component N400 of the ERP to unfamiliar words was higher than that of the ERP to familiar words. It was also higher in ERPs to words unrelated to the given category than in ERPs to related words. However, this component did not differ between ERPs to well and poorly acquired words in the test on sensory physiology. On the contrary, the late positive component was more expressed in ERPs to familiar and better acquired words in both tasks. Brain mechanisms of processing of different types of words are discussed.  相似文献

Language and music, two of the most unique human cognitive abilities, are combined in song, rendering it an ecological model for comparing speech and music cognition. The present study was designed to determine whether words and melodies in song are processed interactively or independently, and to examine the influence of attention on the processing of words and melodies in song. Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs) and behavioral data were recorded while non-musicians listened to pairs of sung words (prime and target) presented in four experimental conditions: same word, same melody; same word, different melody; different word, same melody; different word, different melody. Participants were asked to attend to either the words or the melody, and to perform a same/different task. In both attentional tasks, different word targets elicited an N400 component, as predicted based on previous results. Most interestingly, different melodies (sung with the same word) elicited an N400 component followed by a late positive component. Finally, ERP and behavioral data converged in showing interactions between the linguistic and melodic dimensions of sung words. The finding that the N400 effect, a well-established marker of semantic processing, was modulated by musical melody in song suggests that variations in musical features affect word processing in sung language. Implications of the interactions between words and melody are discussed in light of evidence for shared neural processing resources between the phonological/semantic aspects of language and the melodic/harmonic aspects of music.  相似文献

The topography of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) was examined during 3 kinds of tasks: selection of a specified real word or nonsense syllable from a list; simple detection of each of the same stimuli without discrimination; and classification of a set of words according to a specified semantic category. The potentials that were associated with the additional processing required by the discriminative tasks were disclosed by subtracting the wave forms obtained in the detection condition from those obtained during discriminative performance. Difference wave forms were also derived between the semantic classification and verbal discriminative ERP to delineate the changes associated with the extraction of word meaning. The topography of the ERP associated with stimulus detection was comparable to that found in previous studies of evoked potentials to non-speech stimuli. This distribution was consistent with 2 cortical generators, one within the supratemporal plane and the other on the lateral surface of the superior temporal gyrus. When discriminative performance was required on the basis of acoustic stimulus properties, the topography of the difference wave form that reflected this discriminative processing extended more posteriorly over temporal cortex. Semantic processing elicited a further posterior extension of ERP components by 330 msec after stimulus onset, as well as longer latency potentials that were not present in the verbal selection task. These differences imply that a more extensive portion of language cortex is engaged in semantic classification than in verbal identification.  相似文献

Objectives: To characterize the effects of normal aging on the amplitude, latency and scalp distribution of the N400 congruity effect. Methods: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 72 adults (half of them men) between the ages of 20 and 80 years (12/decade) as they performed a semantic categorization task. Participants listened to spoken phrases (e.g. `a type of fruit' or `the opposite of black') followed about 1 s later by a visually-presented word that either did or did not fit with the sense of the preceding phrase; they reported the word read and whether or not it was appropriate. ERP measurements (mean amplitudes, peak amplitudes, peak latencies) were subjected to analysis of variance and linear regression analyses. Results: All participants, regardless of age, produced larger N400s to words that did not fit than to those that did. The N400 congruity effect (no-fit ERPs−fit ERPs) showed a reliable linear decrease in the amplitude (0.05–0.09 μV per year, r=0.40) and a reliable linear increase peak latency (1.5–2.1 ms/year, r=0.60) with age. Conclusions: In sum, the N400 semantic congruity effect at the scalp gets smaller, slower and more variable with age, consistent with a quantitative rather than qualitative change in semantic processing (integration) with normal aging.  相似文献

To assess the effects of normal aging and senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) on semantic analysis of words, we examined the N400 component of the event-related potential (ERP) elicited during the processing of highly constrained (opposites) and less constrained materials (category-category exemplars) in 12 young control subjects, 12 elderly control subjects and 12 patients with SDAT. We employed a priming paradigm in which a context phrase was spoken and a target word (congruent or incongruent) was presented visually. The N400 effect was reduced in amplitude and delayed in the elderly control group relative to that of the younger subjects, and was further attenuated in amplitude, delayed in latency and somewhat flatter in its distribution across the scalp in the SDAT patients. These findings are consistent with less efficient processing and integration of lexical items with semantic context in normal aging, which is further exacerbated by SDAT. Differences in the N400 range associated with the opposite and category conditions were observed only in the young subjects, suggesting less use of controlled attentional resources or perhaps weaker associative links with age.  相似文献

The effects of spatial selective attention upon ERPs associated with the processing of word stimuli were investigated. While subjects maintained central eye fixation, ERPs were recorded to words presented to the left and right visual fields. In each of 6 runs, subjects focussed attention to alternate fields to perform a category-detection task. Pairs of semantically related and repeated words were embedded in the word lists presented to the attended and unattended visual fields. Consistent with prior studies, the P1-N1 visual ERP was larger when elicited by words in attended spatial locations. A large negative slow wave identified as N400 was elicited by attended, but not unattended, words. For attended words, N400 was smaller for semantically primed or repeated words. We concluded that spatial selective attention can modulate the degree to which words are processed, and that the cognitive processes associated with N400 are not automatic.  相似文献

In the previous studies, semantic processing was repeatedly found to be reflected in the late (300-800 ms) components of event-related potentials (ERP). However, a human may catch the meaning of the words much earlier. In this work we investigated brain mechanisms of semantic analysis of abstract and concrete written words in four experimental conditions: (1) simple reading (a subjects had to read words to him/herself); (2) simple classification (a subjects had to classify presented words into abstract and concrete categories); (3) cued and (4) uncued selective classification conditions (a subject had to classify only the words typed in a particular color). In the simple reading condition, early (40-100 ms) differences between the ERPs to concrete and abstract words were found mostly in the right frontal areas. During simple classification, the early differences between the ERPs were observed in more dorsal areas. Differences in the late ERP components (450-700 ms) in the left frontal area were characteristic of all cases of explicitly classified words. The findings suggest the existence of two semantic systems: a rapid implicit system which involves the right frontal cortex and can be suppressed by task demands, and a slow explicit system of word classification involving, predominantly, the left frontal area.  相似文献

The present study uses the N400 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) as a processing marker of single spoken words presented during sleep. Thirteen healthy volunteers participated in the study. The auditory ERPs were registered in response to a semantic priming paradigm made up of pairs of words (50% related, 50% unrelated) presented in the waking state and during sleep stages II, III–IV and REM. The amplitude, latency and scalp distribution parameters of the negativity observed during stage II and the REM stage were contrasted with the results obtained in the waking state. The `N400-like' effect elicited in these stages of sleep showed a mean amplitude for pairs of unrelated words significantly greater than for related pairs and an increment of latency. These results suggest that during these sleep stages a semantic priming effect is maintained actively although the lexical processing time increases.  相似文献

The work is aimed at the study of ERPs to visually presented verbal stimuli in the examination stress condition. EEG was recorded while participants made a decision whether or not visually presented words were related to a given category. Three types of stimuli were presented: familiar words related and unrelated to the given category, and unfamiliar words. Components N170, P170 and N400 of the ERP to familiar words unrelated to the given category and unfamiliar words were higher in the stress condition than in a usual experimental situation. Component P600 was higher in the stress condition for all types of stimuli. It was suggested that enhanced N170/P170 and N400 components reflect changes in the cognitive functions ofword processing, whereas the increase in P600 is related to nonspecific arousal in the stress condition.  相似文献

Forty-four right-handed volunteers were invited to listen to Italian 5-letter words of different kinds, including non-words, digitally recorded. Signals from 16 electrodes were averaged and displayed both as traces and maps. When the same word was monotonously delivered to the subject, a positive component at 340 ms was recorded following the N100–P200 complex. This potential was automatic, phonologically driven, independent of habituation, specific for verbal material and lateralized to the left side. By contrast, semantic tasks evoked bilateral N400, by using the oddball paradigm with different kinds of target stimuli, including non-words. The N400 duration was related to the task complexity. The late positive component was locked-in-time with the end of the words. Therefore, N400 reached its peak before the word completion. At that time the probability of recognition was 60%, progressively reaching 100% at the time of the late positive component. Intra- and interindividual variance was low. The findings indicates two different language processings: one is confined to the perisylvian regions of the left hemisphere in right-handed subjects and appears earlier, reflecting phonological processing, whereas the other one is bilateral and takes places when semantic judgments are going on. Event-related potentials during language processing appear to be a very useful tool, especially when EEG maps are displayed, giving us the information on both temporal and spatial events.  相似文献

Fragile X‐associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), a neurodegenerative disorder, affects fragile X (FMR1) gene premutation carriers in late life. Studies have shown cognitive impairments in FXTAS including executive dysfunction, working memory and visuospatial deficits. However, less is known about cognition in females with FXTAS. Thus, we examined semantic processing and verbal memory in female FXTAS patients with event‐related potentials (ERPs) and neuropsychological testing. Sixty‐one females (34 FXTAS, Mage = 62.7; 27 controls, Mage = 60.4) were studied with 32‐channel ERPs during a category judgment task in which semantically congruous (50%) and incongruous items were repeated approximately 10–140 seconds later. N400 and P600 amplitude data were submitted to analysis of covariance. Neuropsychological testing demonstrated lower performance in verbal learning and executive function in females with FXTAS. Event‐related potential analyses showed a significant reduction of the N400 congruity effect (incongruous ? congruous) in the FXTAS group. The N400 congruity effect reduction in females with FXTAS was mainly due to increased N400 amplitude to congruous new words. No significant abnormalities of the N400 repetition effect or the P600 repetition effect were found, indicating preserved implicit memory and verbal memory, respectively, in females with FXTAS. The decreased N400 congruity effect suggests abnormal semantic expectancy and/or semantic network disorganization in female FXTAS patients. The enhanced N400 amplitude to congruous new words may reflect decreased cognitive flexibility among FXTAS women, making access to less typical category exemplar words more difficult .  相似文献

Three target words (T1, T2, and T3) were embedded in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream of non-word distractors, and participants were required to report the targets at the end of each RSVP stream. T2 and T3 were semantically related words in half of the RSVP streams, and semantically unrelated words in the other half of the RSVP streams. Using an identical design, a recent study reported distinct reflections of the T2–T3 semantic relationship on the P2 and N400 components of event-related potentials (ERPs) time-locked to T3, suggesting an early, automatic, source of P2 semantic effects and a late, controlled, source of N400 semantic effects. Here, P2 and N400 semantic effects were examined by manipulating list-wide context. Relative to participants performing in a semantically unbiased context, participants over-exposed to filler RSVP streams always including semantically related T2/T3 words reported a dilution of T3-locked P2 semantic effects and a magnification of T3-locked N400 semantic effects. Opposite effects on P2 and N400 ERP components of list-wide semantic context are discussed in relation to recent proposals on the representational status of RSVP targets at processing stages prior to consolidation in visual short-term memory.  相似文献

How pictures and words are stored and processed in the human brain constitute a long-standing question in cognitive psychology. Behavioral studies have yielded a large amount of data addressing this issue. Generally speaking, these data show that there are some interactions between the semantic processing of pictures and words. However, behavioral methods can provide only limited insight into certain findings. Fortunately, Event-Related Potential (ERP) provides on-line cues about the temporal nature of cognitive processes and contributes to the exploration of their neural substrates. ERPs have been used in order to better understand semantic processing of words and pictures. The main objective of this article is to offer an overview of the electrophysiologic bases of semantic processing of words and pictures. Studies presented in this article showed that the processing of words is associated with an N 400 component, whereas pictures elicited both N 300 and N 400 components. Topographical analysis of the N 400 distribution over the scalp is compatible with the idea that both image-mediated concrete words and pictures access an amodal semantic system. However, given the distinctive N 300 patterns, observed only during picture processing, it appears that picture and word processing rely upon distinct neuronal networks, even if they end up activating more or less similar semantic representations.  相似文献

Twenty subjects listened to a series of simple sentences, spoken by a male voice, in which the last word was on occassions either made semantically incongruous or was unexpectedly spoken by a female voice. Averages of ERPs to the last words revealed that a consistent late negative compenent (N456) was associated with semantic incongruity and a late positive component (P416) with physical (voice) incongruity. The results were consistent with thise in the visual modality by Kutas and Hillyard (1980a,b) and are interpreted in terms of the facilitatory and inhibitory effects of contextual priming on the processing of the words concerned. In a subsidiary experiment 6 subjects were required to repeat the last words of the same set of sentences as rapidly as possible. Verbal response latency increased by 62 msec to physically incongruous words and by 185 msec to semantically incongruous words.  相似文献

The P300 (P3) event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited with a passive tone sequence paradigm and evaluated in 2 studies. Experiment 1 compared ERPs from the passive procedure with those from an active discrimination (oddball) task. The passive sequence paradigm yielded P3 wave forms remarkably similar to those obtained from the active task since both demonstrated central-parietal maximum scalp distributions and virtually identical peak latencies. No differences between tasks were found when ERPs were elicited with subject's eyes open or closed. Experiment 2 compared ERPs from the passive sequence paradigm obtained when subjects were attempting to solve a word puzzle with those from a simple ignore condition. The puzzle-solving secondary task produced a decrease in P3 amplitude relative to the ignore condition, although P3 peak latency was unaffected. These results suggest that the passive sequence paradigm may be a useful and reliable means of eliciting the P3 ERP in subject populations or experimental situations in which an active discrimination task cannot be performed.  相似文献

A number of studies have explored the time course of Chinese semantic and syntactic processing. However, whether syntactic processing occurs earlier than semantics during Chinese sentence reading is still under debate. To further explore this issue, an event-related potentials (ERPs) experiment was conducted on 21 native Chinese speakers who read individually-presented Chinese simple sentences (NP1+VP+NP2) word-by-word for comprehension and made semantic plausibility judgments. The transitivity of the verbs was manipulated to form three types of stimuli: congruent sentences (CON), sentences with a semantically violated NP2 following a transitive verb (semantic violation, SEM), and sentences with a semantically violated NP2 following an intransitive verb (combined semantic and syntactic violation, SEM+SYN). The ERPs evoked from the target NP2 were analyzed by using the Residue Iteration Decomposition (RIDE) method to reconstruct the ERP waveform blurred by trial-to-trial variability, as well as by using the conventional ERP method based on stimulus-locked averaging. The conventional ERP analysis showed that, compared with the critical words in CON, those in SEM and SEM+SYN elicited an N400–P600 biphasic pattern. The N400 effects in both violation conditions were of similar size and distribution, but the P600 in SEM+SYN was bigger than that in SEM. Compared with the conventional ERP analysis, RIDE analysis revealed a larger N400 effect and an earlier P600 effect (in the time window of 500–800 ms instead of 570–810ms). Overall, the combination of conventional ERP analysis and the RIDE method for compensating for trial-to-trial variability confirmed the non-significant difference between SEM and SEM+SYN in the earlier N400 time window. Converging with previous findings on other Chinese structures, the current study provides further precise evidence that syntactic processing in Chinese does not occur earlier than semantic processing.

When subjects read an semantically unexpected word, the brain electrical activity shows a negative deflection at about 400 msec in comparison with the response to an expected word. In order to study the brain systems related to this effect we mapped it with a dense (64-channel) electrode array and two reference-independent measures, one estimating the average potential gradients and the other radial current density. With these measures, the event-related brain potential (ERP) begins at about 70 msec with the P1, reflecting bilateral current sources over occipitoparietal areas. A strongly left-lateralized N1 then follows, peaking at about 180 msec, accompanied by an anterior positivity, the P2. A separate posterior positive pattern then emerges that seems to repeat the topography of the P1. Next, at about 350 msec, the ERP for the congruous word develops a P300 or LPC, characterized by a diffuse positivity over the superior surface of the head and several negativities over inferior regions. This superior source/inferior sink pattern of the LPC is greater over the left hemisphere. In contrast, the ERP for the incongruous word in this interval displays the N400 as a period in which topographic features are absent. At about 400 msec the ERP for the incongruous word begins to develop an LPC, which then remains relatively symmetric over the two hemispheres.  相似文献

The results of the multivariate analysis of variance confirmed statistically significant differences in latency and amplitude of some ERPs waves to nouns and ERPs to verbs. ERPs to nouns differ from ERPs to verbs by a significantly longer latency and greater amplitude of some waves. A comparison of the characteristics of ERPs to nouns and ERPs to verbs separately in males and females produced basically identical results; in females, however, there are much fewer significant differences than in males. Interaction between the site of the recording electrode and features of ERPs to words of different word classes however could not be demonstrated.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the automatic processing of emotional facial expressions while performing low or high demand cognitive tasks under unattended conditions. In Experiment 1, 35 subjects performed low (judging the structure of Chinese words) and high (judging the tone of Chinese words) cognitive load tasks while exposed to unattended pictures of fearful, neutral, or happy faces. The results revealed that the reaction time was slower and the performance accuracy was higher while performing the low cognitive load task than while performing the high cognitive load task. Exposure to fearful faces resulted in significantly longer reaction times and lower accuracy than exposure to neutral faces on the low cognitive load task. In Experiment 2, 26 subjects performed the same word judgment tasks and their brain event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured for a period of 800 ms after the onset of the task stimulus. The amplitudes of the early component of ERP around 176 ms (P2) elicited by unattended fearful faces over frontal-central-parietal recording sites was significantly larger than those elicited by unattended neutral faces while performing the word structure judgment task. Together, the findings of the two experiments indicated that unattended fearful faces captured significantly more attention resources than unattended neutral faces on a low cognitive load task, but not on a high cognitive load task. It was concluded that fearful faces could automatically capture attention if residues of attention resources were available under the unattended condition.  相似文献
