In this paper, the acute changes in the compound motor action potential (CMAP) during mechanical stretch were studied in hamster sciatic nerve and compared to the changes that occur during compression.In response to stretch, the nerve physically broke when a mean force of 331 gm (3.3 N) was applied while the CMAP disappeared at an average stretch force of 73 gm (0.73 N). There were 5 primary measures of the CMAP used to describe the changes during the experiment: the normalized peak to peak amplitude, the normalized area under the curve (AUC), the normalized duration, the normalized velocity and the normalized velocity corrected for the additional path length the impulses travel when the nerve is stretched. Each of these measures was shown to contain information not available in the others.During stretch, the earliest change is a reduction in conduction velocity followed at higher stretch forces by declines in the amplitude of the CMAP. This is associated with the appearance of spontaneous EMG activity. With stretch forces < 40 gm (0.40 N), there is evidence of increased excitability since the corrected velocities increase above baseline values. In addition, there is a remarkable increase in the peak to peak amplitude of the CMAP after recovery from stretch < 40 gm, often to 20% above baseline.Multiple means of predicting when a change in the CMAP suggests a significant stretch are discussed and it is clear that a multifactorial approach using both velocity and amplitude parameters is important. In the case of pure compression, it is only the amplitude of the CMAP that is critical in predicting which changes in the CMAP are associated with significant compression.  相似文献

Spike trains were recorded simultaneously from pairs of auditory nerve fibres in anesthetized cats. Tests for correlation between spike trains were developed for spontaneous activity and for discharge patterns resulting from single-tone stimuli. The application of these tests to the recordings indicates that the responses of auditory nerve fibers to a tone and to silence can be described as statistically independent point processes. This result implies that the initiation of spikes in these fibers is governed by localized processes specific for each fiber.  相似文献

A new subspecies, Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. coagulans, was isolated from the external auditory meatus of dogs suffering from external ear otitis and is described on the basis of studies of 21 strains. Phenotypic studies showed that these strains are more closely related to Staphylococcus intermedius than to other staphylococci, but DNA hybridization studies indicated that they are closely related to Staphylococcus schleiferi N850274T. On the basis of biochemical distinctiveness (positive test tube coagulase test and different carbohydrate reactions) and the etiological importance (frequent isolation from otitis specimens from dogs) of these strains, we propose to classify them as a subspecies of S. schleiferi. The strains of this new subspecies are coagulase tube test, beta-hemolysin, and heat-stable nuclease positive but clumping factor negative. A simple scheme for the differentiation of S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans from the other coagulase-positive staphylococci is presented. The type strain is GA211 (= JCM 7470).  相似文献

Alpinia zerumbet, known popularly as "col?nia" in Northeastern Brazil, is a medicinal plant that has been used widely in folk medicine as teas and infusions for the treatment of intestinal and cardiovascular diseases, including arterial hypertension. Our previous studies have demonstrated that the essential oil of A. zerumbet (OEAZ) is very active on excitable tissues, such as smooth muscle, and in this study we verified its effects on the compound action potential (CAP) of rat sciatic nerve. EOAZ induced a dose-dependent blockade of the CAP. Control peak-to-peak amplitude and conduction velocity of CAPs were 7.6 +/- 0.43 mV and 80.6 +/- 3.19 m/s, respectively. At 60 microg/ml, EOAZ induced no demonstrable effect. Conduction velocity was significantly reduced at 180 min of preparation exposure to 100 microg/ml of EOAZ. At 300, 600 and 2000 microg/ml doses of EOAZ, the peak-to-peak amplitudes of CAPs following 180 min exposure of the nerve to the drug were reduced significantly, to 75.3 +/- 7.36%, 50.45 +/- 2.17% and 0% respectively, of control value. Conduction velocity was reduced significantly by 300, 600 and 2000 microg/ml of EOAZ, at 180 min, to 83.61 +/- 3.28%, 64.06 +/- 8.21% and 22.7 +/- 5.79%, respectively, of control value. All these effects developed slowly and were reversible upon a 180-min wash.  相似文献

Aural temperature was initially lower and rose over time in most cases whereas esophageal temperature generally decreased.
  • 4.4.|These results suggest that air temperature within the aural canal is not a useful estimate of deep body temperature since it reflects mainly skin temperature.

Extraglomerular cortex and medulla structural elements of kidneys, obtained from 10 male normal rabbits and 10 human beings (8 male and 2 female), who died from accidents at the age of 16-40 years, were studied in comparison. Morphometric studies with statistical evaluation are presented in diagrams, showing the percentage correlation of structural elements of rabbit and human kidneys. It is shown that the difference in life conditions of the studied species may result in the difference of these correlations The obtained results must be taken in to account in the comparative study of pathologic processes in the human and rabbit kidneys.  相似文献

The magnetic field outside an isolated axon is calculated using transmembrane potential data to specify the boundary conditions to a solution of Laplace's equation. It is shown that the contribution to the magnetic field from the current inside the membrane is two orders of magnitude larger than that from the external current. The contribution from current within the membrane is negligible. Comparisons are made between waveforms calculated for a crayfish lateral axon and those measured for a frog sciatic nerve. This calculation suggests that the magnetic field measured outside nerves can be used to determine their internal current without puncturing the nerve membrane.  相似文献

The external auditory meatus, middle, and inner ear of the deep-diving Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli) were studied with light microscopic, histological, and histochemical techniques in order to contribute to the open discussion on the orientation of this seal in the darkness of the deep Antarctic seas. The external auditory meatus is characterized by a well-developed venous plexus, single apocrine ceruminous, and numerous holocrine sebaceous glands and an incomplete tube of elastic cartilage. The tympanic membrane is comprised of two layers of radially and concentrically arranged collagen fibers and by elastic fibers which are concentrated in the outer part of the ear drum. The tympanic cavity is lined by a pseudostratified prismatic ciliated epithelium with goblet cells; a plexus of wide venous vessels marks the subepithelial lamina propria. The cochlea is about 10 mm high and forms about two and a half turns. The richly pigmented stria vascularis is well vascularized, while the cell-rich prominentia spiralis contains only single small blood vessels. The organ of Corti contains one row of inner and three rows of outer hair cells. Cells of Hensen, Claudius, and Boettcher are present. The basilar membrane is of comparatively uniform simple structure and is composed of abundant glycoproteins, proteoglycans, collagenous fibers, and the loose tissue of the tympanal layer. The spiral ligament is built up by abundant proteoglycans and a complex system of radial and concentric collagen fibers; close to the osseous wall of the bony cochlea it contains fine elastic fibers. The inner zone of the osseous wall of the cochlea strikingly contains hyaline cartilage. The thin lamina spiralis ossea is covered by a limbus spiralis with interdental cells secreting the lamina tectoria, which has a fibrous texture and contains glycoproteins and negatively charged components. The sympathetic response to hypoxia depends on the interaction between chemoreceptor stimulation (CRS) and the associated hyperventilation. We studied this interaction by measuring sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) to muscle in 13 normal subjects, while breathing room air, 14% O2, 10% O2, and 10% O2 with added CO2 to maintain isocapnia. Minute ventilation (VE) and blood pressure (BP) increased significantly more during isocapnic hypoxia (IHO) than hypocapnic hypoxia (HHO). In contrast, SNA increased more during HHO [40 +/- 10% (SE)] than during IHO (25 +/- 19%, P less than 0.05). To determine the reason for the lesser increase in SNA with IHO, 11 subjects underwent voluntary apnea during HHO and IHO. Apnea potentiated the SNA responses to IHO more than to HHO. SNA responses to IHO were 17 +/- 7% during breathing and 173 +/- 47% during apnea whereas SNA responses to HHO were 35 +/- 8% during breathing and 126 +/- 28% during apnea. During ventilation, the sympathoexcitation of IHO (compared with HHO) is suppressed, possibly for two reasons: 1) because of the inhibitory influence of activation of pulmonary afferents as a result of a greater increase in VE, and 2) because of the inhibitory influence of baroreceptor activation due to a greater rise in BP. Thus in humans, the ventilatory response to chemoreceptor stimulation predominates and restrains the sympathetic response. The SNA response to chemoreceptor stimulation represents the net effect of the excitatory influence of the chemoreflex and the inhibitory influence of pulmonary afferents and baroreceptor afferents.  相似文献

Raman spectra of frog sciatic nerves were recorded in different states of functioning. During excitation reversible changes were observed in the C40-carotenoid peaks enhanced by the resonance Raman effect. This change can be explained by transient carbon-carbon bond equalization of the polyene chain. Possible biological consequences are also discussed.  相似文献

The present investigation was carried out to know the effect of Ca2+ on different peaks of compound action potential (CAP) representing the fibers having different conduction velocity. CAP was recorded from a thin bundle of nerve fibers obtained from desheathed frog sciatic nerve. Suction electrodes were used for stimulating and recording purposes. In Ca2+ -free amphibian Ringer, two distinct peaks (Peak-I and Peak-II) were observed. The threshold, conduction velocity (CV), amplitude and duration of Peak-I were 0.32 +/- 0.02 V, 56 +/- 3.0 m/sec, 2.1 +/- 0.2 mV and 0.75 +/- 0.1 ms, respectively. The Peak-II exhibited ten times greater threshold, eight times slower CV, three times lower amplitude and four times greater duration as compared to Peak-I. Addition of 2 mM Ca2+ in the bathing medium did not alter CAP parameters of Peak-I excepting 25% reduction in CV. But, in Peak-II there was 70-75% reduction in area and amplitude. The concentration-attenuation relation of Peak-II to various concentrations of Ca2+ was nonlinear and 50% depression occurred at 0.35 mM of Ca2+. Washing with Ca2+ -free solution with or without Mg2+ (2 mM)/verapamil (10 microM) could not reverse the Ca2+ -induced changes in Peak-II. Washing with Ca2+ -free solution containing EDTA restored 70% of the response. The results indicate that Ca2+ differentially influence fast and slow conducting fibers as the activity of slow conducting fibers is greatly suppressed by external calcium.  相似文献

Somatosensory evoked potentials (ppSEPs) in response to stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist and the cauda equina at the epidural space (the L4 level) were recorded from the posterior wall of the pharynx in 15 patients who underwent spinal surgery under general anesthesia, using disc electrodes attached to the endotracheal tube, and compared with segmental spinal cord potentials (seg-SCPs) that were recorded simultaneously from the posterior epidural space (PES). ppSEPs consisted of the initially positive spike (P9) followed by slow positive (P13) and negative (N22) waves. The P13 and N22 of ppSEPs had phase reversal relationship with the P2 and N2 recorded from the PES, respectively. The peak latencies of P9 (9.40 ± 0.7 ms) (mean ± SD), P13 (13.1 ± 0.9 ms), and N22 (22.0 ± 2.1 ms) of ppSEPs coincided with those of P1, N1 and P2 of seg-SCPs, respectively. ppSEPs were recorded more clearly with a reference electrode on the dorsal surface of the neck than with the reference electrode at the earlobe or back of the hand. The threshold and maximal stimulus intensities were also similar between the ppSEPs and seg-SCPs. Thus, the P9, P13, and N22 components of ppSEPs were thought to have the same origin as the P1, N1 and P2 of seg-SCPs, respectively. Therefore, the P9, P13 and N22 of ppSEPs may reflect incoming volleys through the root, synchronized activities of the interneurons and primary afferent depolarizations (PAD), respectively. ppSEPs in response to cauda equina stimulation showed that the latencies of the two initial components (4.6 ± 0.4 and 6.4 ± 0.6 ms) corresponded to those of the SCPs recorded from the PES (4.6 ± 0.3 and 6.3 ± 0.5 ms), suggesting that these potentials reflect impulses conducting through the spinal cord, similar to epidurally recorded SCPs.  相似文献
