The communication signals of electric fish can be dynamic, varying between the sexes on a circadian rhythm and in response to social and environmental cues. In the gymnotiform fish Brachyhypopomus gauderio waveform shape of the electric organ discharge (EOD) is regulated by steroid and peptide hormones. Furthermore, EOD amplitude and duration change on different timescales and in response to different social stimuli, suggesting that they are regulated by different mechanisms. Little is known about how androgen and peptide hormone systems interact to regulate signal waveform. We investigated the relationship between the androgens testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), the melanocortin peptide hormone α-MSH, and their roles in regulating EOD waveform of male B. gauderio. Males were implanted with androgen (T, 11-KT, or blank), and injected with α-MSH before and at the peak of androgen effect. We compared the effects of androgen implants and social interactions by giving males a size-matched male stimulus with which they could interact electrically. Social stimuli and both androgens increased EOD duration, but only social stimuli and 11-KT elevated amplitude. However, no androgen enhanced EOD amplitude to the extent of a social stimulus, suggesting that a yet unidentified hormonal pathway regulates this signal parameter. Additionally, both androgens increased response of EOD duration to α-MSH, but only 11-KT increased response of EOD amplitude to α-MSH. Social stimuli had no effect on EOD response to α-MSH. The finding that EOD amplitude is preferentially regulated by 11-KT in B. gauderio may provide the basis for independent control of amplitude and duration.  相似文献

Frequency of headshaking in chickens from two selected lines (HA and LA) known to differ in this trait was observed at various ages, during hormonal fluctuations and in different environmental surroundings. Neither hormonal changes concomitant with the initial onset of lay nor ingestion of corticosterone (which stopped egg production in 240-day-old pullets) altered headshaking frequency. When pullets reared in flocks on litter were moved at 77 days of age to individual battery cages, headshaking frequency was dramatically increased in one flock but did not change in another flock. Moving 252-day-old birds from individual cages to floor pens decreased headshaking frequency in males but not in females; returning the birds to cages did not significantly alter levels of headshaking. In older birds (252 days of age), headshaking frequency in all birds in line HA and in males of line LA were considerably greater than in LA females.  相似文献

Unlike the smaller and more vulnerable mammals, African elephants have relatively few predators that threaten their survival. The sound of disturbed African honeybees Apis meliffera scutellata causes African elephants Loxodonta africana to retreat and produce warning vocalizations that lead other elephants to join the flight. In our first experiment, audio playbacks of bee sounds induced elephants to retreat and elicited more head-shaking and dusting, reactive behaviors that may prevent bee stings, compared to white noise control playbacks. Most importantly, elephants produced distinctive “rumble” vocalizations in response to bee sounds. These rumbles exhibited an upward shift in the second formant location, which implies active vocal tract modulation, compared to rumbles made in response to white noise playbacks. In a second experiment, audio playbacks of these rumbles produced in response to bees elicited increased headshaking, and further and faster retreat behavior in other elephants, compared to control rumble playbacks with lower second formant frequencies. These responses to the bee rumble stimuli occurred in the absence of any bees or bee sounds. This suggests that these elephant rumbles may function as referential signals, in which a formant frequency shift alerts nearby elephants about an external threat, in this case, the threat of bees.  相似文献

Cuttlefish are cephalopods capable of rapid camouflage responses to visual stimuli. However, it is not always clear to what these animals are responding. Previous studies have found cuttlefish to be more responsive to lateral stimuli rather than substrate. However, in previous works, the cuttlefish were allowed to settle next to the lateral stimuli. In this study, we examine whether juvenile cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) respond more strongly to visual stimuli seen on the sides versus the bottom of an experimental aquarium, specifically when the animals are not allowed to be adjacent to the tank walls. We used the Sub Sea Holodeck, a novel aquarium that employs plasma display screens to create a variety of artificial visual environments without disturbing the animals. Once the cuttlefish were acclimated, we compared the variability of camouflage patterns that were elicited from displaying various stimuli on the bottom versus the sides of the Holodeck. To characterize the camouflage patterns, we classified them in terms of uniform, disruptive, and mottled patterning. The elicited camouflage patterns from different bottom stimuli were more variable than those elicited by different side stimuli, suggesting that S. officinalis responds more strongly to the patterns displayed on the bottom than the sides of the tank. We argue that the cuttlefish pay more attention to the bottom of the Holodeck because it is closer and thus more relevant for camouflage.  相似文献

The blood androgen and glucocorticoid levels of male Haplochromis burtoni and Xiphophorus helleri were measured in socially isolated individuals (8 and 4 weeks, respectively) and nonisolated controls. In both species social isolation leads to significant reductions of mean concentrations and variances, both for androgens and corticosteroids. It is known for H. burtoni—and new evidence for X. helleri is presented—that social isolation reduces aggressivity in nonescalating situations. It is proposed that social stimuli in both species stimulate the testes to produce more androgenic hormones, and that this can lead to higher levels of aggression. At least in tropical fish species the androgenic optimum for defending a territory or a social status may be much more controlled by social stimuli than previously realized.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to describe the form and interpret the motivation, function and derivation of breeding behaviour in the White Booby. Attention is paid to adaptive aspects and an effort made to correlate behaviour with environment? particularly colony density and associated degree of competitive behaviour. The absence, simplicity or complexity of certain displays can be correlated with the extent to which highly developed social and /or pair interaction are needed. Throughout I have tried to place White Booby behaviour in the framework of behaviour in the Sulidae as a group and particularly to compare it with Gannet behaviour, since the latter nest more densely than other sulids and show more extreme aggression and greater ritualization of behaviour patterns used in interpair and wider social communications. The White Booby provides an interesting contrast. After a brief account of morphology and voice the points are made that White Booby colonies are generally smaller and much less dense than those of the Gannet or Peruvian Booby and also that White Boobies breed in a wide variety of habitats. Site establishment, pair formation, later pair relations, social interactions, body maintenance behaviour, incubation and care of young are described and an account of behaviour in the young is given. The male establishes the site and shows yes /no headshaking as an aggressive, site-ownership display, often performed after landing. He attracts the female with a sky-pointing display which is homologous with sky-pointing in the Gannet, where, however, it subserves a different and, it is argued, phylogenetically older function, signalling that a bird is about to leave the site rather than serving as an advertizing display. In the White Booby it is thus a good example of a motivationally and functionally emancipated display. When the pair meet, mutual jabbing, a hostile-looking and relatively undifferentiated meeting ceremony, and bill-touching occur. Symbolic nest building plays an important part in White Booby pair behaviour, though the nest is structurally negligible. Nest building is associated with copulation, in which the female is not gripped. Bill-up-face-away is a bill-averting posture used when a booby moves away from its mate. It is probably an appeasement posture and, so far as the situation “I am about to move” is concerned, seems to have taken the place of Gannet sky-pointing, the latter having become the booby's advertizing. Wing rattle is a movement probably partly functional in preparing feathers for flight, but is also used as signal behaviour prior to take-off, particularly during the frequent flights around the breeding area that White Boobies show early in the season. Wing flapping, sometimes with rotary headshaking, is mainly feather maintenance behaviour. The forms of headshaking and head flinging are described. Reciprocal allo-preening occurs; it is suggested that it can do so without disadvantage since White Boobies possess mutual jabbing—an interaction which can accommodate any aggression engendered by the pair pointing bills at each other, as required for reciprocal allo-preening. The average incubation spell in the male is 30 hours and in the female 25 hours; all sulid males show this tendency to spend longer on the site. Seasonally, too, there is a marked sex-difference in site attendance and this is depicted in graphs for different categories of White Boobies. The young are left unguarded from about four weeks of age and move off the site. They are fed about 1.4 times per day. They respond to adult investigation or attack by beak-hiding—an effective appeasement posture. Soon, they perform aggressive territorial behaviour and dispel other young and adults. They return to the site to be fed for around 50 to 60 days after they become free-flying and show all forms of territorial behaviour. The discussion is mainly concerned with the correlation between nesting density, aggression and associated appeasement behaviour. It is concluded that, overall, the White Booby's ritualized postures and displays are less well differentiated than those of the Gannet, though individual behaviour patterns may be more complex. The pair relationship in the White Booby approximates more closely to that normally found in birds, where the male is not outstandingly aggressive to his mate.  相似文献

Wild and domestic ungulates modify their behaviour in the presence of olfactory and visual cues of predators but investigations have not exposed a domestic species to a series of cues representing various predators and other ungulate herbivores. We used wolf (Canis lupus), mountain lion (Puma concolor), and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) stimuli (olfactory and visual), and a control (no stimuli) to experimentally test for differences in behaviour of cattle (Bos taurus) raised in Arizona. We measured (1) vigilance, (2) foraging rates, (3) giving up density (GUD) of high quality foods and (4) time spent in high quality forage locations in response to location of stimuli treatments. In general, we found a consistent pattern in that wolf and deer treatments caused disparate results in all 4 response variables. Wolf stimuli significantly increased cattle vigilance and decreased cattle foraging rates; conversely, deer stimuli significantly increased cattle foraging rate and increased cattle use of high quality forage areas containing stimuli. Mountain lion stimuli did not significantly impact any of the 4 response variables. Our findings suggest that domestic herbivores react to predatory stimuli, can differentiate between stimuli representing two predatory species, and suggest that cattle may reduce antipredatory behaviour when near heterospecifics.  相似文献

Social behavior changes dramatically during primate adolescence. However, the extent to which testosterone and other gonadal hormones are necessary for adolescent social behavioral development is unknown. In this study, we determined that gonadectomy significantly impairs social dominance in naturalistic settings and changes reactions to social stimuli in experimental settings. Rhesus macaques were castrated (n =  6) or sham operated (n = 6) at age 2.4 years, group-housed for 2 years, and ethograms were collected weekly. During adolescence the gonadally intact monkeys displayed a decrease in subordinate behaviors and an increase in dominant behaviors, which ultimately related to a rise in social status and rank in the dominance hierarchy. We measured monkey's reactions to emotional faces (fear, threat, neutral) of conspecifics of three ages (adult, peer, infant). Intact monkeys were faster to retrieve a treat in front of a threatening or infant face, while castrated monkeys did not show a differential response to different emotional faces or ages. No group difference in reaction to an innate fear-eliciting object (snake) was found. Approach and proximity responses to familiar vs unfamiliar conspecifics were tested, and intact monkeys spent more time proximal to a novel conspecific as compared to castrates who tended to spend more time with a familiar conspecific. No group differences in time spent with novel or familiar objects were found. Thus, gonadectomy resulted in the emergence of significantly different responses to social stimuli, but not non-social stimuli. Our work suggests that intact gonads, which are needed to produce adolescent increases in circulating testosterone, impact social behavior during adolescences in primates.  相似文献

Amphibians, like other animals, generate corticosterone or cortisol glucocorticoid responses to stimuli perceived to be threatening. It is generally assumed that the corticosterone response of animals to capture and handling reflects the corticosterone response to stimuli such as the sight of a predator that are thought to be natural stressors. Fijian ground frogs ( Platymantisvitiana ) are preyed upon by the introduced cane toads ( Rhinellamarina ), and we used ground frogs to test the hypothesis that the sight of a predator will induce a corticosterone stress response in an amphibian. Urinary corticosterone metabolite concentrations increased in male ground frogs exposed to the sight of a toad for 1, 3 or 6 h, whereas corticosterone did not change in frogs exposed to another male ground frog, a ball, or when no stimulus was present in the test compartment. The frogs exposed to a toad initially moved towards the stimulus then moved away, whereas frogs exposed to another frog moved towards the test frog and remained closer to the frog than at the start of the test. Tonic immobility (TI) was measured as an index of fearfulness immediately after the test exposure of the frogs to a stimulus. The duration of TI was longer in frogs exposed to a toad than to another frog or to a ball. The results provide novel evidence that the sight of a predator can induce a corticosterone response and lead to increased fearfulness in amphibians. In addition, they show that endemic frogs can recognise an introduced predator as a threat.  相似文献

The most popular type of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are based on the detection of the P300 wave of the evoked potentials appearing in response to a stimulus chosen by the subject. In order to increase the speed of operation of these BCIs, it is possible to decrease the number of repeated stimulus presentations. It is associated with an increase in the relative importance of the response to the first stimulus in a train for correct recognition of the stimulus chosen. Event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to the first stimulus presentations are known to have their own specificity. Particularly, in many cases, the amplitude of the response to the first presentations is enhanced, which makes it very suitable for recognition in a BCI. However, this effect has not been studied to date. In this study, the ERPs recorded in healthy subjects in a standard BCI paradigm (n = 14) with ten presentations of stimuli or during triple-trial (n = 6) and single-trial (n = 6) presentations of stimuli in a modified BCI paradigm with moving objects have been analyzed. In both cases, first presentations of the target stimuli or single-trial presentation of the target stimulus were associated with higher amplitudes of ERPs. The opportunity to use specific differences between the responses to the first or single-trial presentations and the responses to later stimuli during their repeated presentations for improving high-speed operations in the P300-based BCI is discussed.  相似文献

Bats are the most diverse mammalian order second to rodents, with 1400+ species globally. In the tropics, it is possible to find more than 60 bat species at a single site. However, monitoring bats is challenging due to their small size, ability to fly, cryptic nature, and nocturnal activity. Recently, bioacoustic techniques have been incorporated into survey methods, either through passive acoustic monitoring or acoustic bat lures. Lures have been developed on the premise that broadcasting acoustic stimuli increases the number of captures in harp traps or mist nets. However, this is a relatively new, niche method. This study tested the efficacy of two commonly used acoustic bat lure devices, broadcasting two different acoustic stimuli, to increase forest understory bat captures in the tropics. This is the first time an acoustic bat lure has been systematically tested in a tropical rainforest, and the first study to compare two lure devices (Sussex AutoBat and Apodemus BatLure). Using a paired experimental design, two synthesized acoustic stimuli were broadcasted, a feeding call and a social call, to understand the importance of the call type used on capture rates and genus‐specific responses. Using an acoustic lure significantly increased capture rates, while the type of device did not impact capture rates. The two acoustic stimuli had an almost even distribution of captures, suggesting that the type of call may be less important than previously thought. Results indicate a possible deterrent effect on Rhinolophous sp., while being particularly effective for attracting bats in the genera Murina and Kerivoula. This study highlights the effectiveness of lures, however, also indicates that lure effects can vary across genera. Therefore, lures may bias survey results by altering the species composition of bats caught. Future research should focus on a single species or genus, using synthesized calls of conspecifics, to fully understand the effect of lures.  相似文献

IN the course of experiments in which movements were elicited by direct electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex, Graham-Brown1–4 and Sherrington5 found that, after each train of stimuli, there were prolonged changes in the excitability of the cortex. They showed that the motor responses of forelimb muscles in primates, even though elicited by identical cortical stimuli, could be extremely variable. Two of the phenomena they described in detail (see also Lilly6) were “facilitation” (the increased motor response resulting from a second train of stimuli when it was applied within 20 s after the first train) and “reversal of response” (when repeated, identical stimulation of the same cortical point elicited flexion instead of extension, or vice versa).  相似文献

Failure to recognize conspecifics in social interactions such as mate choice and aggressive encounters will often result in reduced fitness. Studies on mate choice show that the ability to recognize conspecifics as mates is not universally present at birth, but often needs to be learned. In contrast, little is known about the ontogeny of intrasexual species recognition. To test whether learning influences the recognition of sexual rivals, we compared the aggressive response towards intruders of interspecifically cross-fostered individuals and controls reared by conspecific parents. We simulated territorial intrusion by presenting either a caged individual or playback song near the nest of breeding pairs of great tits, Parus major, and blue tits, P. caeruleus. Great tits reared by blue tit parents responded much more to blue tit stimuli than did great tit controls, and furthermore showed stronger responses to blue tit stimuli than to those of their own species. Blue tits reared by great tits responded much more to great tit stimuli than did blue tit controls. In contrast, blue tits cross-fostered to coal tits, P. ater, did not respond more to coal tits than did blue tit controls. There was a species difference in the response to conspecifics: blue tits cross-fostered to great tits responded more to conspecifics than did cross-fostered great tits. The results were similar for males and females. We conclude that learning influences intrasexual species recognition in these tits. Average body sizes in a variety of marine animals have been reported to be correlated with height in the intertidal zone. This paper reports field observations on four species of Thais showing that the relationship between size distribution and intertidal height or subtidal depth is highly variable. Intertidal size gradients in Thais have been explained by a size dependent set of responses to light and gravity, but experiments reported here do not indicate that snails of different sizes behave differently with respect to the intertidal gradient per se and it is argued that, when there is a size gradient, it is produced by the direct responses of snails to factors such as shelter, temperature, desiccation, and food. It is suggested that a response to token stimuli is unlikely to evolve when the token stimuli are poorly correlated with the relevant environmental factors, especially if the latter can be monitored directly by the animal.  相似文献

Social isolation is a major stressor which impacts the physiology, behaviour and health of individuals in gregarious species. However, depending on conditional and contextual factors, such as social status and group composition, social isolation may be perceived differently by different individuals or even by the same individuals at different times. Here we tested the effects of social status (territorial vs. non-territorial) and previous group composition (i.e. type of social group: mixed sex group with two territorial males, TT vs. mixed sex group with one territorial and one non-territorial male, TnT) on the hormonal response (androgens and cortisol) to social isolation in a cichlid fish (Oreochromis mossambicus). The different steroid hormones measured responded differentially to social isolation, and their response was modulated by social factors. Social isolation elicited a decrease of 11-keto formation only in territorial males, whereas non-territorial males present a non-significant trend for increasing KT levels. Testosterone did not respond to social isolation. Cortisol only increased in isolated individuals from TnT groups irrespective of social status (i.e. both in territorials and non-territorials). These results suggest that it is the perception of social isolation and not the objective structure of the situation that triggers the hormonal response to isolation.  相似文献

Background

The success of social insects can be in part attributed to their division of labor, which has been explained by a response threshold model. This model posits that individuals differ in their response thresholds to task-associated stimuli, so that individuals with lower thresholds specialize in this task. This model is at odds with findings on honeybee behavior as nectar and pollen foragers exhibit different responsiveness to sucrose, with nectar foragers having higher response thresholds to sucrose concentration. Moreover, it has been suggested that sucrose responsiveness correlates with responsiveness to most if not all other stimuli. If this is the case, explaining task specialization and the origins of division of labor on the basis of differences in response thresholds is difficult.

Methodology

To compare responsiveness to stimuli presenting clear-cut differences in hedonic value and behavioral contexts, we measured appetitive and aversive responsiveness in the same bees in the laboratory. We quantified proboscis extension responses to increasing sucrose concentrations and sting extension responses to electric shocks of increasing voltage. We analyzed the relationship between aversive responsiveness and aversive olfactory conditioning of the sting extension reflex, and determined how this relationship relates to division of labor.

Principal Findings

Sucrose and shock responsiveness measured in the same bees did not correlate, thus suggesting that they correspond to independent behavioral syndromes, a foraging and a defensive one. Bees which were more responsive to shock learned and memorized better aversive associations. Finally, guards were less responsive than nectar foragers to electric shocks, exhibiting higher tolerance to low voltage shocks. Consequently, foragers, which are more sensitive, were the ones learning and memorizing better in aversive conditioning.

Conclusions

Our results constitute the first integrative study on how aversive responsiveness affects learning, memory and social organization in honeybees. We suggest that parallel behavioral modules (e.g. appetitive, aversive) coexist within each individual bee and determine its tendency to adopt a given task. This conclusion, which is at odds with a simple threshold model, should open new opportunities for exploring the division of labor in social insects.  相似文献

Prevalent cell death in forebrain- and Sertoli cell-specific Atrx knockout mice suggest that Atrx is important for cell survival. However, conditional ablation in other tissues is not associated with increased death indicating that diverse cell types respond differently to the loss of this chromatin remodeling protein. Here, primary macrophages isolated from Atrx f/f mice were infected with adenovirus expressing Cre recombinase or β-galactosidase, and assayed for cell survival under different experimental conditions. Macrophages survive without Atrx but undergo rapid apoptosis upon lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activation suggesting that chromatin reorganization in response to external stimuli is compromised. Using this system we next tested the effect of different apoptotic stimuli on cell survival. We observed that survival of Atrx-null cells were similar to wild type cells in response to serum withdrawal, anti-Fas antibody, C2 ceramide or dexamethasone treatment but were more sensitive to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Cell survival could be rescued by re-introducing Atrx or by removal of p53 demonstrating the cell autonomous nature of the effect and its p53-dependence. Finally, we demonstrate that multiple primary cell types (myoblasts, embryonic fibroblasts and neurospheres) were sensitive to 5-FU, cisplatin, and UV light treatment. Together, our results suggest that cells lacking Atrx are more sensitive to DNA damaging agents and that this may result in enhanced death during development when cells are at their proliferative peak. Moreover, it identifies potential treatment options for cancers associated with ATRX mutations, including glioblastoma and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.  相似文献

Granulomas are organized host immune structures composed of tightly interposed macrophages and other cells that form in response to a variety of persistent stimuli, both infectious and noninfectious. The tuberculous granuloma is essential for host containment of mycobacterial infection, although it does not always eradicate it. Therefore, it is considered a host-beneficial, if incompletely efficacious, immune response. The Mycobacterium RD1 locus encodes a specialized secretion system that promotes mycobacterial virulence by an unknown mechanism. Using transparent zebrafish embryos to monitor the infection process in real time, we found that RD1-deficient bacteria fail to elicit efficient granuloma formation despite their ability to grow inside of infected macrophages. We showed that macrophages infected with virulent mycobacteria produce an RD1-dependent signal that directs macrophages to aggregate into granulomas. This Mycobacterium-induced macrophage aggregation in turn is tightly linked to intercellular bacterial dissemination and increased bacterial numbers. Thus, mycobacteria co-opt host granulomas for their virulence.  相似文献
