  • 4.4. A time course study demonstrated slight increases in protease and amylase activities during the first larval stage, regardless of whether the lobsters were fed or not, whereas lipase activity was constant.

  • 2.2. Thermal time constants were calculated and no significant differences were found (t-test; 0.05 level) between warming and cooling rates.

  • 1.1. Platelets bind specifically to lactoferrin. A significant similarity between human lactoferrin and some bovine milk proteins has been established.
  • 2.2. Because of the structural homology of lactoferrin and cows milk proteins they are able to influence lactoferrins regulatory function on the level of its binding to membrane receptors on platelets.
  • 3.3. An inhibitory effect of bovine α-lactalbumin and of β-lactoglobulin on lactoferrin-receptor interaction was shown.
  • 4.4. Bovine α-lactalbumin competes with lactoferrin for the binding sites.
  • 5.5. Scatchard plot analysis of data shows one binding site for lactoferrin in the presence of α-lactalbumin with an affinity constant, Ka = 0.46 × 109 mol/1 and 335 receptors/cell.

  • 2.2. Total activities of the different enzymes (isocitric dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, catalase, lactic dehydrogenase) decline at varying rates, starting before the rapid phase of involution.
  • 3.3. One isozyme of LDH, an M-type isozyme, increases several-fold during the final three days prior to the emergence of the insect.
  • 4.4. The same isozyme appears very transiently or not at all in muscles which do not break down, and is present in degenerating silk glands at the time of their most rapid involution.
  • 5.5. The data suggest that limitation of oxidative metabolism plays a role in the involution of the muscles.

  • 4.4. Zinc, due to its regulatory effects on spermatozoa (maturation, metabolism, motility) may be important in sperm storage in hibernating bats.

  • 1.1. Glycoconjugates in the albumin glands of Achatina fulica have been fractionated by combination of organic solvents, salt precipitation and chromatography on specific agarose-lectin beads.
  • 2.2. A galactan consisting only of galactosyl residues was isolated from an agarose peanut-lectin matrix. It gave single precipitin arcs with many heterophile lectins in agar-gel electrophoresis.
  • 3.3. The galactan exhibited selective serological reactivity with some galactose-specific lectins, (PNA, RCA, Tridacnins).
  • 4.4. Histochemical studies with fluorescein-labelled lectins demonstrated the topochemical distribution of this galactan within the snail's albumin gland.

  • 1.1. Ejaculation of seminal fluid into the spermatophore formed inside the female bursa copulatrix terminates 20 min after the beginning of copulation of Bombyx mori. The amounts of amino acids transferred are small, but the amounts of amino acids in the spermatophore continue to increase after this time due to protein degradation and amino acid interconversions.
  • 2.2. Arginase, which has high activity in the vesicula seminalis, is transferred to the spermatophore without loss of activity during ejaculation. During mating, ornithine and much urea are formed in the spermatophore, indicating activity of the transferred arginase.
  • 3.3. In the spermatophore, marked increase of alanine with low concentrations of ornithine and glutamate suggests the presence of a pathway for the active formation of 2-oxoglutarate with pyruvate via glutamate from arginine. During mating, proline and glutamine also increase, but at low rates.
  • 4.4. Of the exocrine glands in the male reproductive system, the vesicula seminalis secretes the highest concentration of glutamate (30% of the total amino acids); serine is the amino acid present at highest concentration in secretions of other glands (20–30%). No urea was found in the secretions of any of the glands.

  • 2.2. The enzyme resembles DNase I from bovine pancreas in respect to the molecular mass (~31 kDa), pH (7.4) and ion requirements (Mg2+, Ca2+) and the ability to degrade native as well as denatured DNA.
  • 3.3. As judged by comparison of DNase zymograms obtained after native- and SDS-PAGE, the enzyme occurs in the three molecular forms of similar molecular weight and different charges.
  • 4.4. All these forms are inhibited by rabbit skeletal muscle actin as well as by endogenous actin isolated from the carp liver cytosol.
  • 5.5. DNase from the carp liver cytosol does not interact with the antibodies directed against DNase I from bovine pancreas and against DNase I from the rat and bovine parotid glands.

  • 2.2. One mole of ANS binds to a mole of each M-protein and the binding site on these two M-proteins is hydrophobic in nature.
  • 3.3. M-line proteins labeled with ANS were used to demonstrate their interaction with myosin and myosin subfragments 1 and 2.
  • 4.4. A unique finding of this study, that labeled M-line CPK binds to subfragment 2 of myosin, is of significance from a structural view point, since only the rod portions of myosin molecules are exposed at the M-line and therefore able to interact with CPK.
  • 5.5. The use of a sulfhydryl fluorescent probe, N-(2-iodoacetyl)-N-(5-sulfo-l-napthyl) ethylene diamine, (1,5-AEDANS), has shown that the essential sulfhydryl group on CPK is very important for its interaction with both myosin and the 165,000 dalton M-line protein component.
