The Growth and Reproductive Cycle of Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The reproductive cycle of the moss Pleurozium schreberi hasbeen investigated by scoring over 600 specimens from Britainand elsewhere, and through regular observations on several populations.P. schreberi is at least functionally dioecious and the stemsare perennial, producing all the inflorescences of a given cycleduring the autumn. On male plants perigonia develop in largenumbers, principally on lateral branches. Relatively few perichaetiaare formed on female stems where they are largely confined tothe main axes. In Britain perigonial development begins in August,the antheridia remaining in the immature stage during the winterresting phase. Young perichaetia are first recorded in Octoberand the archegonia overwinter in the juvenile stage. Rapid gametangialdevelopment takes place in spring prior to the main fertilizationperiod in April and May. Young sporophytes are present fromMay onwards. Setal elongation is delayed until August, but thelate operculum intact stage is reached by October. In Britainthe spores are shed between January and April, nine to twelvemonths after fertilization. Data from the literature and fromFrench, Finnish, and North American specimens suggests a similarcycle in other areas, though with slight differences, notablythat fertilization in parts of Scandinavia may be delayed comparedwith Britain. The results from periodic measurements of marked plants andother techniques suggest that in Britain vegetative growth mayalso show a winter resting phase, stem elongation being recordedonly from April to November.  相似文献

Abstract

Gender expression and sporophyte frequency of Frullania tamarisci were compared between epiphytic woodland and exposed coastal colonies in an Atlantic region of western Britain. Corticolous colonies exhibited very high sporophyte frequency in mixed-sex colonies. Samples from well-grown epiphytic patches commonly had intimate mixtures of highly fertile female and male shoot networks, and fertilisation reduced gynoecia number. In marked contrast, colonies in exposed coastal habitats were found to be sub-fertile or non sex-expressing and sporophytes were rare. There was a distinct female bias among colonies on the coast where spatial segregation of the sexes and male scarcity appear to limit sporophyte frequency. It is suggested that the close association of males and sporophytic females in epiphytic colonies may be influenced by within-colony sporophyte frequency.  相似文献

Postglacial migration is a major factor responsible for the patterns of genetic variation we see in natural populations. Fossil pollen data indicate that early postglacial colonists such as oak, were able to take both western and eastern migration routes into Britain. Analysis at a finer level is now permitted by the use of modern molecular techniques. A 13-bp duplication in the chloroplast tRNALeul intron occurs in natural populations of East Anglian oaks, but is not found in other parts of Britain or from mainland Europe. The distribution of this marker suggests that the mutation occurred either in southern England, or during migration from the mainland, and became fixed in a source population from which East Anglia was colonized. Planting of non-native trees for roadside boundaries and in the grounds of old houses and estates, explains the absence of the marker from some East Anglian oaks.  相似文献

Pollination ecology and reproductive success of Jack-in-the-pulpit ( Arisaema triphyllum ) were studied in two natural populations in Québec, Canada. Individual A. triphyllum plants can be of three types: male, female or bisexual. In both populations studied, the presence of bisexual inflorescences was not negligible (13%), where 'female' and 'male' bisexual plants were categorised according to the relative number of stamens and ovaries. 'Male bisexual' plants produce only pollen and 'female bisexual' plants produce only fruit. Hence, A. triphyllum is a true dioecious plant, as each plant only reproduces through either the male or the female function. 'Female bisexual' plants were equivalent to female plants in terms of visitation rate by insects, fructification rate and production of berries and seeds. Neither agamospermy in female plants nor self-pollination in 'female bisexual' plants was found, thus A. triphyllum relies on insects for cross-pollination. Despite the long flowering cycle, a low visitation rate was documented: only 20–40% of inflorescences were visited, according to gender, by a mean of 1.5 insects. In this study, Mycetophilidae represented the most generically diversified and abundant family, as well as the most efficient insect pollinator, especially the genera Docosia and Mycetophila .  相似文献

A single bisexual gametophyte was isolated in a dish and a female gametophyte was paired with a male one to allow intragametophytic selfing and intergametophytic mating, respectively. The early stages of development of the inflorescence of Philodendronmelinonii were examined using scanning electron microscopy.Pistillate flowers are initiated on the lower portion of theinflorescence and staminate flowers are initiated on the distalportion. The male flowers have four to five stamens. The femaleflowers have a multilocular ovary consisting of four to sixlocules. A transition zone consisting of sterile male flowersand bisexual flowers with fused or free carpels and staminodesis also present on the inflorescences. This zone is locatedbetween the male and female flower zones. Generally, the portionof the bisexual flower facing the male zone forms stamens, andthe portion facing the female zone develops an incomplete gynoeciumwith few carpels. In P. melinonii, the incomplete separationof staminodes from the gynoecial portion of the whorl showsthat the staminodes and carpels belong to the same whorl. Thebisexual flowers of P. melinonii are believed to be a case ofhomeosis where carpels have been replaced by sterile stamenson the same whorl. At the level of the inflorescence, pistillateand staminate flowers are inserted on the same contact parastichiesalong the inflorescence; there is no discontinuity between thefemale zone, the bisexual zone, and the male zone. The presenceof bisexual flowers is believed to correspond to a morphogeneticgradient at the level of the inflorescence as a whole. Ethrel treatment at 960, 1920, and 3840 parts 10–6 tomale plants of M. nigra produced intersex and female flowers.The intersexual flowers showed various degrees of transformationof male sex organs into female. The complete female flowersproduced were similar to female controls. In bryophytes, the possibility of intragametophytic selfing creates complex mating patterns that are not possible in seed plants, although relatively little is known about patterns of inbreeding in natural populations. In the peat‐moss genus Sphagnum, taxa are generally bisexual (gametophytes produce both sperm and egg) or unisexual (gametes produced by separate male and female plants). We sampled populations of 14 species, aiming to assess inbreeding variation and inbreeding depression in sporophytes, and to evaluate correlations between sexual expression, mating systems, and microhabitat preferences. We sampled maternal gametophytes and their attached sporophytes at 12–19 microsatellite loci. Bisexual species exhibited higher levels of inbreeding than unisexual species but did generally engage in some outcrossing. Inbreeding depression did not appear to be common in either unisexual or bisexual species. Genetic diversity was higher in populations of unisexual species compared to populations of bisexual species. We found a significant association between species microhabitat preference and population genetic diversity: species preferring hummocks (high above water table) had populations with lower diversity than species inhabiting hollows (at the water table). We also found a significant interaction between sexual condition, microhabitat preference, and inbreeding coefficients, suggesting a vital role for species ecology in determining mating patterns in Sphagnum populations. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 115 , 96–113.  相似文献

Dioecy, the segregation of male and female structures among individuals, is widespread in tropical plants, encompassing 10–30 percent of species in some sites. In many cases, interindividual sex separation is not complete, as individual plants, although nominally dioecious, may produce both types of reproductive structures. A common form of this sexual variation is the production of female structures in otherwise male individuals, commonly referred to as fruiting males. Here we report the existence of fruiting males in the dioecious tropical tree Jacaratia mexicana (Caricaceae). We show that fruiting males can constitute up to 45 percent of all males in some populations of a tropical forest in Southern Mexico. In order to determine the functional significance of fruiting males for the breeding system of J. mexicana , we compared the relative performance of male- and female-borne seeds. Our results show that seeds from fruiting males are three times less likely to germinate and survive than seeds from female trees. Based on relative seed fitness data, and sex ratios in natural populations, we estimate that 6–15 percent of the genes contributed by fruiting males to the next generation are transmitted via ovules, meaning that morphological variation in gender is at least partially accompanied by functional gender variation. Finally, our seed fitness estimates for fruiting males suggest that fruiting males will not replace female plants in natural populations.

The European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) lives in stable, territorial breeding groups, with male-biased natal dispersal, female philopatry, and a polygynous mating system. It was introduced into Britain in the 11 th century and kept in captive warrens as a food and fur resource. Populations expanded in the wild in the 18th century. Microsatellite markers were employed to examine the genetic structure of wild rabbit populations on three spatial scales: macrogeographic structure of 17 populations in East Anglia, microgeographic structure of a tagged population in the grounds of the University of East Anglia over four consecutive years, and pairwise kinships and individual movement within this tagged population. Populations across East Anglia were found to be genetically distinct, and heterozygote deficits were observed at all loci indicating sub-division within sampled populations. Analysis of the tagged population confirmed that rabbit populations are genetically sub-divided among social groups. Studying this population over four consecutive years revealed that as the population size increased, the number of social groups increased. Analysis of individual pairwise relatedness of females indicated that individuals did not necessarily group with kin, and behavioural data indicate that an optimum group size may exist which maximizes reproductive success.  相似文献

小桐子(Jatropha curcas)种子含油率高,油脂组成适合于生产生物燃油,是制备航空生物燃油和生物柴油的理想原料。小桐子是一种雌雄同株植物,雌雄花着生于同一花序,其花序中雌花比例很低,可能是其种子产量低的主要原因之一。本文研究用不同浓度的赤霉素外源喷施处理小桐子花序芽对其花和种子发育的影响。结果表明:外源赤霉素处理能够诱导小桐子产生两性花,且处理浓度越高,两性花数量越多;随着两性花数量的增加,雌花数量相应越少,但雌花与两性花数量之和在各处理和对照之间差异不显著,这表明赤霉素诱导出的两性花可能来源于雌花。另外,高浓度(500~1500mg·L-1)的赤霉素处理会导致小桐子的种子不能正常发育, 表现为每个果实中的种子数量、大小、单粒种子重量、每个果序的种子重量以及种子的含油量都显著减少。这些结果有助于深入理解赤霉素在小桐子花器官形成及种子发育过程中所发挥的生理作用,为从分子水平上对小桐子进行遗传改良、提高其种子产量奠定基础。  相似文献

Reproductive resource investment among vegetative propagules and male and female sexual function and their size-dependence were investigated in a perennial forest herb, Laportea bulbifera . A theoretical model based on fitness gain curves predicts that optimal investments in three reproductive modes will increase with plant size if fitness returns in all three modes increase but become saturated with investment. In a field population, large plants of L. bulbifera produced both male and female inflorescences with propagules, while small plants produced only vegetative propagules. Biomass of propagules, male inflorescences, and infructescences with achenes were all positively correlated with plant size. The increase in investment with plant size was larger for propagule production than for sexual reproduction. The relationship between propagule biomass and plant size was constant irrespective of year, while the relationship between the biomass of sexual reproductive organs and plant size differed between two successive years. Annual change of individual sex expression was investigated for 25 transplanted plants. Although each plant changed its sex expression variously among male, female and bisexual from year to year, 23 out of 25 plants produced both male and female inflorescences in at least one year. The number of viable (germinated and survived) offspring from seeds was not significantly different from the number from propagules. The production cost of a propagule was higher than that of a seed. Resource allocation theory does not seem to be applicable to size-dependent resource allocation, especially the allocation between seeds and propagules in this species.  相似文献

Parthenogenetic populations of the gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris are widespread throughout Polynesia. They often occur parapatrically, and occasionally syntopically, with the increasingly rare bisexual populations. In these instances, a small number of hybrid individuals occur and include both "female" and "male" external phenotypes, both with greatly reduced gonads. Histological examination demonstrates that these hybrids possess small ovotestes. The differentiation of the cortical tissue is identical in both "male" and "female" hybrids, but the medullary tissue is more developed in "males." The remainder of the genital tract in "females" resembles that of fertile females in the parthenogenetic and bisexual populations. By contrast, the "male" hybrids are markedly intersexual. In one of the two specimens autopsied, the hemipenes are more or less the same size as those of bisexual males, and the sexual segment of the kidney is hypertrophied and serous. In the other hybrid "male," the hemipenes have a structure similar to that seen in females, and the sexual segment of the kidney is poorly differentiated. In both hybrid "males," the ductus deferens is extremely narrow and further reduced in its middle portion; oviducts are present and resemble those of normal or hybrid females. Thus, embryonic-like gonads are associated with complete and normal female reproductive ducts in hybrid "females." Hybrid "males" also have embryonic-like gonads and feminized genital ducts but associated with secondary sexual characters that match those of sexually active or quiescent normal males.  相似文献

A total of 62,811 cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been reported to the World Health Organization from throughout the world. Extensive epidemiologic studies have shown that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are transmitted by three routes: sexual, parenteral and perinatal. Three geographic patterns of transmission have been defined. In pattern I, transmission occurs predominantly among homosexual and bisexual men and urban intravenous drug abusers; transmission via blood products has been controlled; the male:female sex ratio is 10:1 or more; population HIV seroprevalence is low, and perinatal transmission is uncommon (for instance, United States, western Europe). In pattern II, transmission is predominantly heterosexual and perinatal; transmission via blood products exists but is being reduced; unsterile needles and other skin-piercing instruments cause some parenteral transmission (magnitude not known); the male:female sex ratio is 1:1, and population seroprevalence often exceeds 1% (central Africa, Haiti). In pattern III, AIDS cases are just being documented and are generally due to sexual exposure abroad or imported blood products (Middle East, Asia).  相似文献

为了寻找保护和恢复甘南红景天种群的有效途径,本文分析了甘南红景天的繁育系统、生殖过程、开花物候特征及影响生殖成功的主要因子.结果表明:甘南红景天为雌雄异株,雄花在花芽分化初期为两性植株,但随着花的不断发育,雌蕊的胚囊发育到一定阶段时败育,两性植株基本仅执行雄性功能,种群繁殖为异交,以风媒传粉方式为主,种群花期出现在全年降雨和气温较高的季节.6月初现蕾,6月中旬开花,7月上旬进入盛花期,花期在36 d左右,8月下旬果实成熟.两性植株略早于雌花开放,花期(10.2 d)大于雌性植株(8.4 d).由于部分雌花不易授粉,部分花蕾、胚珠损失,1~3年的幼龄植株几乎不开花结实,群落中只有11%的植株开花结实,种子自然繁殖率极低,约为2%.从花蕾到开花,雌性单株有20.0%~25.1%的花蕾损失; 从开花到结实,单株51.1%~65.0%的花败育;至种子成熟,仅10.1%~21.0%的胚珠发育成种子.雌性单株平均种子产量为158.1粒,人工条件下种子发芽率为81.5%,幼苗第一年的成活率为36.0%.表明种子质量不是导致甘南红景天濒危的原因,而花粉限制、种子产量和幼苗的成活率是真正影响其生殖成功和导致濒危的主要生殖生态学因素.  相似文献

The desert moss Syntrichia caninervis exhibits one of the most skewed sex ratios in the plant kingdom, with female individuals far outnumbering male individuals (exceeding 14♀:1♂). The "cost of sex hypothesis" derives from allocational theory and predicts that the sex which is most expensive should be the rarer sex. This hypothesis, which, as considered here represents the realized cost of sexual reproduction, is contingent upon two assumptions that are explored: (1) that male sex expression is more expensive than female sex expression, and (2) that sexual reproduction is resource limited. Using inflorescence biomass and discounting sperm, male sex expression was found to be in the neighborhood of one order of magnitude more expensive than female sex expression, and this difference is reflected in higher numbers of gametangia per male inflorescence, presence of paraphyses in male inflorescences, and a much longer developmental time for male inflorescences. The realized cost of female reproduction from two communities dominated by S. caninervis was found to be lower than the realized cost of male sexual reproduction. Resource-limited reproduction was assessed by determining the frequency of sporophyte abortion, the age distribution of sporophyte abortions, and patterns of sporophyte abortion that may be density dependent. Among ten sexually reproducing populations, abortive sporophytes occurred at a frequency of 0.64. Abortive sporophytes averaged 8% the mass of mature sporophytes, and cohort sporophytes from the same individual female were found to abort in a density-dependent pattern. We sequenced 704 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control-region nucleotides and genotyped 11 autosomal microsatellites (STR) in 617 European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) samples, aiming to infer the species' phylogeographical structure. The mtDNA sequences were split in three distinct haplogroups, respectively, named: Clade West, sampled mainly in Iberia; Clade East, sampled mainly in Greece and in the Balkans; and Clade Central, which was widespread throughout Europe, including the eastern countries and Iberia, but not Greece. These clades might have originated in distinct Iberian and Balkanic refuges during the penultimate or the last glaciations. Clades East and West contributed little to the current postglacial mtDNA diversity in central Europe, which apparently was recolonized mainly by haplotypes belonging to Clade Central. A unique subclade within Clade Central grouped all the haplotypes sampled from populations of the Italian subspecies C. c. italicus. In contrast, haplotypes sampled in central and southern Spain joined both Clade Central and Clade West, suggesting that subspecies C. c. garganta has admixed origin. STR data support a genetic distinction of peripheral populations in north Iberia and southern Italy, and show the effects of anthropogenic disturbance in fragmented populations, which were recently reintroduced or restocked and not may be in mutation-drift equilibrium. Roe deer in central Europe are mainly admixed, while peripheral populations in north Portugal, the southern Italian Apennines and Greece represent the remains of refugial populations and should be managed accordingly.  相似文献

The kelp Undaria pinnatifida has a widespread latitudinal range in Japan, with populations exposed to very different temperature regimes. To test the hypothesis that U. pinnatifida exhibits genetic differentiation in its temperature response, juvenile sporophytes from a warmer location (Naruto, southern Japan) and two colder locations (Okirai Bay and Matsushima Bay, northern Japan) were collected and transplanted to long lines, cultivated under the environmental conditions in Matsushima Bay. These plants were bred using successive self-crossing methods for three generations and the characteristics of photosynthesis, growth, survival, and nitrogen contents of the third-generation juvenile sporophytes (2–3 cm) then were measured and compared. The plants from Naruto showed significantly higher photosynthetic activities and respiration than those from the northern populations at warmer temperatures of 20–35°C. The juvenile sporophytes from all three locations had similar growth rates below 18°C, but significant differences were observed at 18–24°C. The optimum temperatures for growth were 14–16°C in plants that originated from Okirai Bay and Matsushima Bay and 18°C in plants that originated from Naruto. These results reflected the differences in latitude. Dead plants were observed at high temperatures of 22 and 24°C in the northern population plants, whereas no plants from Naruto died. Juvenile sporophytes from Naruto exhibited the greatest capacity to accumulate high nitrogen reserves. These results suggest that the differences in high-temperature tolerance in juvenile U. pinnatifida sporophytes from geographically separated populations are due to genetic differentiation rather than phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Abstract

Octoblepharum albidum Hedw. is an autoicous moss commonly occurring in tropical savannas, dry forests, rainforests and coastal habitats. It frequently reproduces by spores and asexual structures (gemmae and protonemata or buds at leaf tips), making it a good model for understanding how reproductive traits change with respect to habitat type. Our aims were to characterize the different life-history traits in O. albidum relative to sexual and asexual cycles and to detect variations in reproductive performance among the different habitats, trade-offs among these traits, and relationships among reproductive traits and plant length. We studied colonies from two Atlantic rainforests and two coastal sites in north-eastern Brazil. Shoots in the coastal sites, compared to those of the forest sites, had higher numbers of sporophytes, male and female branches per shoot, male gametangia per sexual branch, and longer setae. Numbers of female gametangia per sexual branch did not differ between forest and coastal sites. A male-biased sex ratio of branches and gametangia occurred in all sites. Compared to gemmae, sporophytes and protonemata or buds were more likely to be found on longer shoots than on shorter ones, but this relationship was only applicable to forest sites. The abundant production of gemmae and protonemata or buds at leaf tips, and sporophytes (spores) in O. albidum are important components in explaining colonization success and maintenance in this tropical moss. Longer sporophytic setae in addition to a higher reproductive performance (especially for number of male gametangia and sporophytes per shoot) may favour spore dispersal and colonization in plants of coastal sites.  相似文献
