Development of Phaeophilacris bredoides Kalt. was studied under stable laboratory conditions: temperature of 26°C, air humidity 60%, and 12L: 12D photoperiod (Knyazev, 1985). The life cycle of Ph. bredoides includes four stages: egg, pronymph, nymph, and adult. The duration of embryonic development is 28 days. The nymphal ontogeny lasts 230 days and consists of 25 instars. The duration of nymphal instars (days) is: 1st—16, 2nd—6, 3rd—8, 4th—10, 5th—10, 6th—15, 7th—10, 8th—8, 9th—9, 10th—11, 11th—11, 12th—8, 13th—9, 14th—10, 15th—7, 16th—9, 17th—7, 18th—7, 19th—7, 20th—10, 21st—11, 22nd—7, 23rd—9, 24th—6, and 25th—9. The duration of adult life is 126 days in males and 125 days in females. Three periods were distinguished in the imaginal ontogeny of males and females: pre-reproductive, reproductive, and post-reproductive. The pre-reproductive period begins with the molt to the adult and ends with the onset of reproductive behavior in males and with the first copulation in females. Its duration is 4 (3–6) days in males and 5 (2–7) days in females. The reproductive period in males starts with the onset of reproductive behavior on the 4th (3rd–6th) day and lasts 119 (98–135) days. In females it begins when they start responding to males’ courtship behavior and lasts 116 (97–133) days. The female reproductive period includes two alternating phases: copulation and egg-laying. The egg-laying phase is initiated by successful copulation. The post-reproductive period in females starts when oviposition ceases and in males, when their reproductive behavior disappears. This period lasts about 3 (2–3) days in males and 4 (2–7) days in females, until the insect dies.  相似文献

Data are presented about the development of reproductive and defense behavior of noncopulated female crickets Gryllus argentinus Sauss. in the beginning of the imaginal ontogeny. The character of interaction of females with “virtual” males (the “supporting ball” method-“trackball”) was studied. The forms of female motor reactions to models of intraspecies male sound signals-the calling and aggressive songs-are described and analyzed. The character of the development of female acoustic behavior is described as judged by change in the forms of motor reactions in the course of the imaginal ontogeny. It is shown that immediately after the imaginal molt the reproductive behavior is not formed yet but it matures gradually within a few days. At the early stages of the imaginal ontogeny passive defense behavior is found to be most clearly expressed.  相似文献

Dichroplus maculipennis (Blanchard) and D. elongatus Giglio-Tos are two of the most important melanoplines in Argentina, both ecologically and economically. The postembryonic development and forage loss (consumption of Bromus brevis Ness + fallen material) caused by older nymphs (instars IV, V, VI) and adults of both species were studied under controlled conditions (30oC, 14L:10D, 40% RH). Five nymphal instars were recorded in D. elongatus, and six in D. maculipennis. Total nymphal development was similar in both species (D. elongatus: 32 ± 0.70 days; D. maculipennis: 34.5 ± 0.37 days). Daily consumption increased from nymphal instars to pre-reproductive adult stage. In both species, pre-reproductive females had higher consumption rates than other stages considered (D. elongatus: 30.6 ± 0.56 mg dry weight/day; D. maculipennis: 48.7 ± 0.74 mg dry weight/day). In the reproductive stage, consumption decreased significantly in both sexes. When feeding, D. maculipennis let some plant material to drop, increasing total loss. The percentage of fallen material was greater in reproductive adults, representing 3.9% and 2.9% of the total daily loss for males and females, respectively. Females and males of D. maculipennis were heavier than those of D. elongatus (P < 0.05), and daily consumption was significantly higher (P < 0.05). Regardless sex and reproductive status, adults of D. maculipennis consumed 29.1 ± 0.64 mg dry weight/day on average, while one of D. elongatus 20.0 ± 0.3 mg dry weight/ day.  相似文献

The sperm allocation pattern of a copulating marine cottid fish, Alcichthys alcicornis, was investigated. A total of 86 mating events using six males were conducted in aquarium tanks over 10 days, and in 36 of them, spermatozoa were collected using a false copulation method. Males released 3–8 × 108 spermatozoa in early events, with the number decreasing gradually during subsequent mating events. This sperm allocation was represented as an “early investment and tapering” pattern. It was discussed why males have significantly higher sperm release in early spawning events. The reproductive behavior consists of spawning and subsequent copulation. Spermatozoa have the ability to fertilize eggs from multiple clutches, and in earlier produced clutches the level of sperm competition should be relatively low. In addition, if early spawn happens to be the first spawn with a female, spermatozoa that are released into the water column after spawning are responsible for fertilizing the female’s first clutch. The probability of this occurring should decrease dramatically as the season progresses, due to the highly synchronous seasonal spawning of females. All of these factors should select for high sperm numbers in early ejaculates. Based on such reproductive ecology of A. alcicornis we hypothesize that this sperm allocation pattern is an adaptive reproductive strategy in response to egg availability and sperm competition occurring within the ovarian cavity.  相似文献

The behavior of females of the damselflyMnais pruinosa was observed in the breeding season. Males consisted of both territorial (esakii) and non-territorial (strigata) types in the study area. Females sometimes arrived at a stream for mating and oviposition. The staying time of females in the stream was 1–3 hours, while that of males was 5–8 hours. The proportion of the males that copulated with the females did not differ between the two male forms present in the stream. In the Calopterygidae, of which the females usually perform multiple copulation, oviposition without subsequent recopulation is considered to be advantageous for a mated male in order to avoid the risk of sperm displacement. From such a viewpoint, the time spent for oviposition was measured for females that arrived at the stream after copulation with different male forms. The ratio was 69.1: 11.5–30.9 betweenesakii andstrigata males. Assuming that the oviposition time is proportional to the number of fertilized eggs laid, this ratio would represent the relative reproductive success of the two male forms. In fact, the relative abundance of the two male forms was also biased in favor ofesakii males (61.7:38.3) in this population. The mechanism of coexistence of the two male forms is discussed in relation to their reproductive success.  相似文献

We studied reproductive behavior of free-ranging capped langurs (Trachypithecus pileatus) in the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Four species of primates —Trachypithecus pileatus, Macaca mulatta, M. assamensis, and Nycticebus bengalensis— live there. We studied the mating seasons, mating frequency, copulatory attempts, time spent in copulation, and interval between 2 successive copulations, gestation length, and interbirth interval of 4 groups of capped langurs during 2001–2003. We observed 2 mating seasons in a year. The first was larger, comprising 5 months (September–January), and the second was short, April and May. Mating was intensive in the morning session (0600–1000 h); 57% of total mating events occurred then. The average gestation period was 200 d. November was the most favorable month for breeding. In a year, 107 mating events occurred involving 5 adult females. Average time per mounting attempt is 12 s. Duration of mounting was the maximum in November. Interbirth interval was 23 months and 10 d. The birth season was 129 days, December–April; 53% of births occurred in February and March. Average birth rate is 0.386 birth/female/yr.  相似文献

We examined the effects of mating on reproductive investment and the timing of oogenesis in the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis by exposing females to males or not. All females exposed to males were mated within a few days and we found that mating affected reproductive investment. Virgin females not exposed to males produced a large clutch of eggs (∼91), but females exposed to males and mated produced 10% more. There was no effect of mating on egg length or mass. There was also no effect of mating on the timing of oogenesis. Females in both treatments provisioned their eggs at the same rate with yolk first becoming visible in the oocytes on day three of adulthood and complete provisioning of eggs occurring by the seventh day of adulthood. We examined the biochemical basis of egg provisioning by identifying the yolk proteins and quantifying their blood titer during the oogenic period in both, females exposed to males and mated and those not exposed to males. There was no difference in the timing of the first appearance, peak titer, or disappearance of yolk proteins in the blood between the two treatments. However, consistent with our observation of greater egg production in mated females, these females contained a greater peak yolk protein titer.  相似文献

Allopatric populations sometimes display reproductive barriers in incipient form, and may thus reveal potential mechanisms of speciation. We conducted mating trials to estimate the degree of precopulatory (behavioral) and postcopulatory (gametic) prezygotic isolation between African and Asian populations of the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. The populations differ in several fitness-related traits, and have been associated with different legume hosts. In single-pair trials, the probability of copulation within 10 min was lower when Asian females were paired with African males than it was in the other three pairing combinations. This pairing also provided evidence for gametic isolation, as Asian females mated once to African males laid fewer eggs than did females in the other treatments. Variation in fecundity could not be explained by the duration of copulation, which did not differ among pairing combinations. There was also no effect of pairing combination on the number of copulation attempts, latency to copulation, or rate of egg hatch. When females were simultaneously presented a male from each population, Asian males obtained a disproportionate share of the matings, and were more likely to disturb a pair already in copulo. Surprisingly, male size did not influence the probability of copulation in the single-male trials, the outcome of male–male competition, or the fecundity of once-mated females. Although the African and Asian populations showed some evidence of mating incompatibility, the absence of symmetrical isolating factors suggests minimal barriers to gene flow.  相似文献

Female chimpanzees mate promiscuously during a period of extended receptivity marked by prominent sexual swelling. Recent studies of wild chimpanzees indicate that subtle variations in swelling size could act as a reliable cue of female fertilization potential both within and between cycles (Emery and Whitten Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 54, 340–351, 2003; Deschner et al. Hormones and Behavior, 46, 204–215, 2004). Copulation rates increase during the periovulatory period and during conception cycles (Deschner et al. Hormones and Behavior, 46, 204–215, 2004; Emery Thompson American Journal of Primatology, 67, 137–158, 2005a), suggesting that males may be able to assess female fertilization potential. We asked whether facultative timing of copulation in Kanyawara chimpanzees was due to increased male mating interest or to increased female proceptivity during the most fecund days. We assessed multiple measures of male mating effort in cycles aligned relative to the day of detumescence and compared periovulatory days to other days of maximal swelling, and conception cycles to nonconception cycles. The rate and proportion of male initiative in soliciting sexual behavior increased during periods of highest fertilization potential. Males were also more likely to interrupt copulations, associate with estrous females, and compete with other males when females were most likely to conceive. Females initiated copulations more frequently during conception cycles but did not visibly shift mating behavior within cycles. Our results support the hypothesis that male chimpanzees have the ability to assess the profitability of mating attempts, a trait that may act as a counter-adaptation to female strategies to obscure paternity. We discuss potential cues and the implications for female reproductive strategies.  相似文献

The character of motor activity of female crickets Gryllus argentinus Sauss. executing reproductive and defense behavior was studied under normal conditions and under conditions of inactivation of the cercal organ at different stages of imaginal ontogeny (on day 2, 7 and 12). Various forms of motor reactions of females placed on a movable spherical support to models of intraspecies calling and aggressive male signals were described and analyzed. Reversible inactivation of cercal receptors was shown to result in disturbance of the mechanisms of realization of normal reproductive behavior at the end of pre-reproductive and in the beginning of reproductive periods of imaginal ontogeny. It is manifested as statistically significant reduction of the proportion of positive phonotactic reactions in response to a model of the male calling song in animals with experimental sensory pathology as compared to control groups of crickets (the norm). No significant differences in proportions of typical directional motor reactions to presentation of the aggressive signal under normal conditions and under conditions of sensory pathology were found. Thus preservation of the tympanic organ was demonstrated to be a necessary but not sufficient condition for realization of adequate acoustic reproductive behavior. Only working together, distant mechanoreceptor systems (the cercal and tympanic ones) are able to provide adequacy of behavior. This conclusion confirmed the proposed earlier hypothesis about interaction of distant mechanoreceptor systems and about existence of an integrated sensory complex necessary for realization of adequate behavior of insects.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of a marine sculpin,Hemilepidotus gilberti, was observed in the aquarium. The behavioral sequence comprised fight for terriotory, courtship and fight for females, spawning and caring for the egg mass. Females very slowly deposited eggs enclosed with viscous ovarian fluid onto the substrate. Almost all the eggs contained in the ovary were released in a single spawning, its completion requiring 21–22 min. Territorial males emitted of spawning. Sneaking by neighboring males followed subsequently. This was the first observation of non-copulatory spawning among marine sculpins. Females cared for the eggs for severl days after spawning, and then male alone care continued until hatching (47–49 days after spawning). Participation by females in egg caring is likely to be caused by their spawning only once during the spawning season and the consequent lack of urgency for post-spawning feeding.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between the number of sperm in the seminal receptacle (spermatheca) and the receptivity of female remating in the bean bugRiptortus clavatus Thunberg. On the 21 st day after the first mating when receptivity to remating was > 70%, females receptive to remating had significantly fewer sperm ( < 40 on average) in the spermathecae than females reluctant to do (about 150 on average). However, averages of the number of eggs laid by receptive and reluctant females within 21 days were almost same. The proportion of fertilized eggs for receptive females at 15–21 days after copulation was significantly lower than that for reluctant females. Spermatozoa transferred from a male to a female’s spermatheca were detected 5 min after copulation and then increased continuously to about 500 with the first hour. When copulation durations were manipulated artificially, the shorter the copulation period (=females had less sperm in their spermathecae), the higher the remating rate became. Females may perceive the number of sperm in their seminal receptacles and then determine whether they copulate or not. These results support the hypothesis that females mate multiply in order to replenish inadequate sperm supplies to fertilize all eggs produced.  相似文献

In the present study, the mating behaviour of the velvet ant Nemka viduata (Pallas) (Mutillidae) is described both from field and laboratory observations. The whole pairing interaction, lasting around two hours, includes several behavioural phases. During pre-copula, the male seizes the female’s neck with his mandibles, and then starts to rhythmically stroke the prothorax of the female with his forelegs (this behaviour is also resumed after copulation) before curving his abdomen in order to couple the genital parts, including genital armatures (the male parameres remaining outside the female body); just prior to copulation, the female extrudes the sting, and immediately after copulation begins, she stridulates for 7–10 s, this behaviour is repeated when the pair separates. During copulation (lasting around two minutes), the male moves his antennae rhythmically, hitting the back of the female’s head with the scape. Generally, recently-mated males become aggressive towards females, but more tolerant after a few days. During the whole pairing act, females are held by the males’ mandibles, and in the field they are carried off in flight or by walking to a safe place to copulate. This would suggest that larger males, which can lift a wider range of female sizes, have a reproductive advantage, as indicated by data obtained on their load-lifting capacity with respect to the size distribution of females. A review of mating behaviour in mutillid wasps and comparisons with other lineages of aculeate and non-aculeate Hymenoptera are also given.  相似文献

Two aspects of mating effects on the fecundity, sex ratio and longevity of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were examined in laboratory experiments: (1) females mated by one, two or three different males (unmated and 3 days old) at 5-day intervals, and (2) females mated by males with different age/mating status (number of females mated previously by the male). Females allowed to mate with a second or third male at 5-day intervals produced 39 eggs on average, but those mated with a single male produced 28 eggs on average. Matings with additional males 5 or 10 days after the first male increased the duration of the oviposition period of these females by 5–7 days and at the same time reduced the post-oviposition period by about 10 days. Overall, females with additional matings by one or two different males at 5-day intervals survived a few days shorter than females without additional males. Mating with a different female each day, a male of N. cucumeris could mate with 5–8 females, which produced a total of 85–116 eggs: females mated with a male during days 1 and 2 in its adulthood and with a male of the last 2 days of life (days 7 and 8) produced about half as many eggs as females mated with a male during 3–6 days of its adulthood. Females mated with males that are too young or too old had a shorter oviposition period and a longer post-oviposition period and longevity than females mated with middle-aged males. In both experiments, rates of oviposition remained similar in females with high or low fecundity. This indicates that in both cases, the increased fecundity is due to the extension of the oviposition period through additional sperm supplied by the second male and or third male (in experiment 1) or more sperm by males not too young nor too old (experiment 2).  相似文献

Synopsis Reproductive habits of a temperate filefish, Paramonacanthus japonicus, were studied on a rocky reef at Tsuyazaki, Fukuoka, Japan, from 1989 through 1990. Males had territories of 30–70m2 and defended them from conspecific males and potential egg predators such as another filefish, Stephanolepis cirrhifer. Egg masses were found on the sandy bottom in male territories. Individual discrimination of males and females occurring in three male territories revealed that males and females stayed in stable pairs during one month of observation in 1989. In these stable pairs, males fed only within their territories, but females occasionally foraged outside. The occurrence of egg masses within male territories and biparental egg care showed that fish were reproducing as monogamous pairs. Contrary to this, males tagged in 1990 changed their territories after the disappearance of females, and males and females mated polygamously. Spawning was observed only four times during the study period, between 1633 and 1754h. Prior to spawning, the female prepared a spawning bed on the sandy bottom. The male nuzzled the female and the pair spawned, touching their gonopores on the spawning bed. Spawning was very quick and took only 1–3 seconds. The adhesive eggs were spherical with a diameter of 0.56 mm. They were mixed with sand particles and formed a doughnut-shaped mass of about 4 cm in diameter. One egg mass contained 3300–3800 embryos of similar developmental stage, which hatched 2–3 days later. P. japonicus appears to be monogamous but may also practice polygamy when pair-bonds are unstable.  相似文献

The effects of mating experience on male mating behavior are mediated by four factors: mating cost, such as resource depletion, perception of mating opportunities, self-perception of attractiveness, and female quality. For example, encountering females might increase male expectations of prospective mating opportunities, while copulation increases self-perception of attractiveness in males. To determine the relative importance of these factors, the effect of mating on the two components of reproductive effort (courtship and fighting effort) in Gryllus bimaculatus was examined. Calling activity before and after encountering females was measured, and copulation success was recorded. Subsequently, the intensity and outcome of male–male fighting behavior was recorded. Female encounter increased calling activity irrespective of copulation, thereby indicating that the perception of mating opportunities is important factor for the males. Changes in courtship effort of males were larger and fighting success was lower when they were previously paired with relatively heavier females. These results indicate that male reproductive effort is also affected by quality of previous mating partners.

In ectothermic organisms, reproductive success and survival are vitally affected by temperature. Here, we analyzed the effects of a short-time exposure to heat stress (1 h at 40 °C versus controls) on reproductive success and longevity in Bicyclus anynana butterflies. After having applied heat stress or a control treatment, individuals were mated in all four possible sexes by treatment combinations. Heat exposure of females caused a subsequent reduction in longevity, fecundity, egg size and concomitantly reproductive investment. Heat exposure of males also reduced longevity, but had in general little effect on the reproduction of female mates. However, females having mated with heat-stressed males showed surprisingly an increased rather than decreased early fecundity, which may indicate an increased investment in current reproduction in stressful environments. Heat stress had no significant effect on egg hatching success, time to copulation and copulation duration. Our results suggest that a short period of heat stress may substantially reduce longevity and reproductive output, with striking differences among sexes. We found no evidence for males being more strongly affected by heat stress than females.  相似文献

Chymotrypsin inhibitor isolated from Ascaris suum (ACHI) was tested for the induction of dominant lethal mutations in male mice. Dominant lethal effects of ACHI for the main stages of germ cell development were analyzed by mating at specific time points after dosing. Two groups of adult BALB/c males received 24 or 40 mg per kilogram body weight (BW) per day intraperitoneal (IP) injection of ACHI in sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for five consecutive days (subacute exposure). Males from a third group were administered single IP injections of ACHI—60 mg/kg BW (acute exposure). The control group received concurrent injections of PBS for five successive days. After the last dose, each male was mated with two untreated females. For fractionated examination with regard to successive germ cell stages (spermatozoa, spermatids, spermatocytes, spermatogonia), every second week, two other untreated virgin females were placed with each male for mating. The uteri of the females were inspected on the 15th day of gestation, and preimplantation loss and postimplantation loss determined from dominant lethal parameters. Exposure of mice germ cells to ACHI did not impair mating activity of males. Fertility index was reduced (P < 0.05) only for females mated at the third week with males exposed to the highest dose of ACHI. In the females bred to ACHI-treated males, significant (P < 0.05) increase in preimplantation loss was observed at postinjection weeks 1 (reflecting exposure to spermatozoa after single treatment and to spermatozoa or late spermatids after subacute dosing) and 3 (reflecting exposure to mid and early spermatids for acute dosing and to mid and early spermatids or late spermatocytes following acute treatment), regardless of dose and length of exposure to the inhibitor. At the 60-mg/kg-BW group, a significant increase of this parameter was also noted at week 5 (reflecting exposure to early spermatocytes). During mating days 15–21, a significant (P < 0.05) increase in postimplantation loss and dominant lethal effects were observed for all doses of ACHI. Acute ACHI exposure 5 weeks prior to mating resulted in dominant lethal effects in early spermatocytes. These preliminary data suggest that ACHI induces dominant lethal mutations at postmeiotic and meiotic stages of spermatogenesis, but spermatids are the most sensitive cell stage to the effect of ACHI. These results show that ACHI may be one of the factors causing disturbances in spermatogenesis leading to a reduction of host reproductive success.  相似文献

Abstract

Several factors were examined to determine their effect on the reproduction and sex ratio in the predacious mite Amblyseius deleoni (Muma and Denmark), in the laboratory. The factors investigated included multiple matings, duration of copulation, capacity of male for mating in excess of females and age of mating females and males. The factors included also, the host plant leaf texture, food deprivation during immature and adult stages, and prey (Tetranychus urticae Koch) density. The results indicated that females of A. deleoni require multiple matings to maximize their reproductive potential, also when copulation was allowed for increasing periods of time, there was a gradual increase in total egg production and oviposition period. A male showed a high reproductive ability for more than 15 days and was able to mate more than once in excess of females. Age of females has an influence on fecundity and sex ratio; old females decreased egg production and produced proportionally more male progeny compared with young females. Similarly, the highest number of eggs deposited per female A. deleoni was reported, when female mated with a young male (0-day old). In addition, males of A. deleoni (at any age) were able to inseminate the females. Results from host plant leaf texture indicated that guava leaf gave the highest reproduction rate, while the fig leaf gave the least female fecundity. Neither the reproductive rate nor the sex ratio of the progeny of females crossed by normal or experimental males had been influenced by the food deprivation during immature stages. A significant lower fecundity was recorded on female's A. deleoni when exposed to different food deprivation programmes during adult stage. The number of eggs laid by the predator female increased with increasing prey density of T. urtice to a maximum of 2.04 eggs deposited per day at a prey density of 30 protonymphs of T. urticae as a prey. As the level of prey density was increased, there was a shift in sex ratio towards an increased proportion of females.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of delayed mating on the copulation duration, female fertility, fecundity, egg fertility, longevity and the number days alive after mating of females of diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, were studied. When male mating was delayed, the female fertility, fecundity, egg fertility, longevity and number days alive after mating of DBM decreased, and there was a negative correlation between the age of the moth with those variables except copulation duration. When female mating was delayed, the female fertility, fecundity, percent egg fertility and number days alive after mating of DBM also decreased, but the longevity increased, which also showed a negative relationship between the age of the moth with the variables except copulation duration and longevity. When both males and females delayed mating, the female fertility and fecundity decreased; egg fertility was affected marginally, and the longevity of females increased. The moth age was negatively correlated with those variables.  相似文献
