Abstract 1 A spatial autocorrelation analysis was undertaken to investigate the spatial structure of annual abundance for the pest aphid Myzus persicae collected in suction traps distributed across north‐west Europe. 2 The analysis was applied at two different scales. The Moran index was used to estimate the degree of spatial autocorrelation at all sites within the study area (global level). The contributions of each site to the global index were identified by the use of a local indicator of spatial autocorrelation (LISA). A hierarchical cluster analysis was undertaken to highlight differences between groups of resulting correlograms. 3 Similarity between traps was shown to occur over large geographical distances, suggesting an impact of phenomena such as climatic gradients or land use types. 4 The presence of outliers and zones of similarity (hot‐spots) and of dissimilarity (cold‐spots) were identified indicating a strong impact of local effects. 5 Several groups of traps characterized by similarities in their local spatial structure (correlograms, value of Moran's Ii) also had similar values for land use variables (the area occupied by agricultural zones, forest and sea). 6 It is concluded that trap data can provide information about Myzus persicae that is representative of large geographical areas. Thus, trap data can be used to estimate the aerial abundance of this species, even if the suction traps are not regularly and densely distributed.  相似文献

Abstract Insect populations are prone to respond to global changes through shifts in phenology, distribution and abundance. However, global changes cover several factors such as climate and land-use, the relative importance of these being largely unknown. Here, we aim at disentangling the effects of climate, land-use, and geographical drivers on aphid abundance and phenology in France, at a regional scale and over the last 40 years. We used aerial data obtained from suction traps between 1978 and 2015 on five aphid species varying in their degree of specialization to legumes, along with climate, legume crop area and geographical data. Effects of environmental and geographical variables on aphid annual abundance and spring migration dates were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models. We found that within the last four decades, aphids have advanced their spring migration by a month, mostly due to the increase in temperature early in the year, and their abundance decreased by half on average, presumably in response to a combination of factors. The influence of legume crop area decreased with the degree of specialization of the aphid species to such crops. The effect of geographical variation was high even when controlling for environmental variables, suggesting that many other spatially structured processes act on aphid population characteristics. Multifactorial analyses helped to partition the effects of different global change drivers. Climate and land-use changes have strong effects on aphid populations, with important implications for future agriculture. Additionally, trait-based response variation could have major consequences at the community scale.  相似文献

Prior to designation as distinct species, an appellation presently in question, the tobacco aphid, Myzus nicotianae Blackman (Homoptera: Aphididae), was classified as a tobacco-feeding form of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). In this study, RAPD polymorphisms distinguished members of the Myzus persicae complex (M. persicae and M. nicotianae) from three outgroup Myzus species (M. cerasi (F.), M. hemerocallis Takahashi, and M. varians Davidson). Polymorphisms within the complex did not separate populations on the basis of host association (tobacco versus other host plants) or geographic origin (collections from the United States, Europe, and Japan). Similarly, while GC-MS analysis of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles revealed both developmental and inter-populational differences within the M. persicae complex, it did not separate populations of tobacco feeding aphids from those collected off non-tobacco hosts. Finally, with the exception of their responses to a choice between lettuce and collards, the host preference behavior of a green peach aphid population, a red tobacco aphid population, and a green tobacco aphid population was indistinguishable in host preference experiments. These results add to a growing body of evidence suggesting M. nicotianae and M. persicae are conspecific.  相似文献

The spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE) technique was developed to evaluate the spatial pattern of point-referenced count data as well as the spatial association between two sets of data sharing the same point locations. This paper presents an analysis of spatial patterns in aphid count data and the association of these data with climate across north-west Europe. The paper tests the applicability of the technique to large geographical areas. Aggregation and cluster indices were calculated for the total annual abundance of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and for the annual mean rainfall and temperature at aphid monitoring sites. Association indices demonstrated the stability in time of aphid spatial structures and the correlation between aphid density and climate patterns. Groups of relatively large numbers of aphids, termed patches, and groups of relatively small numbers of aphids, termed gaps, were located and their mean size estimated. The aphid patterns were quite stable in time and the spatial patterns of temperature and rainfall were weakly associated with M. persicae annual abundance. Similarities were observed between the results of SADIE and those from the more widely used technique of spatial autocorrelation (SAC). However, the SADIE association index has the advantage of quantifying the possible associations between aphid data and the factors that determine population distribution. Thus, high temperature and low rainfall were identified as environmental factors that were positively associated with aphid abundance across north-west Europe.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in eastern Scotland in 1976-78 to test the ability of granular insecticides, applied to soil at planting, and of insecticide sprays applied to the foliage, to control aphids and spread of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) in potatoes. The three years provided contrasting opportunities for virus spread. In 1976, the main vector of PLRV, Myzus persicae, arrived in early June and multiplied rapidly in untreated plots, and PLRV spread extensively. In 1977, M. persicae arrived 4–6 wk later than in 1976 and most spread of PLRV, which was less than in 1976, occurred after the end of July. In 1978, few M. persicae were recorded but the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, arrived early and very large populations developed in untreated plots. However, little spread of PLRV occurred in 1978, supporting other evidence that M. euphorbiae is an inefficient vector of PLRV in field conditions. In each year, granular insecticides decreased PLRV spread to a quarter or less of that in control plots. Thiofanox gave somewhat better and longer-lasting control of aphid populations than disulfoton, especially of M. persicae, but did not give greater control of PLRV spread. Application of three (1976) or five (1977) sprays of demeton-S-methyl to plots treated with granular insecticides further improved the control of M. euphorbiae but had less or no effect on M. persicae, especially where organophosphorus resistant aphids (R1 strain) were found. These supplementary sprays of insecticide did not further improve the control of PLRV but, in 1978, four sprays of demephion or pirimicarb to plots not treated with granular insecticide decreased PLRV spread. These data, together with previous findings, indicate that the amount of virus spread depends on the date of arrival and rate of multiplication of M. persicae in relation to the timing and effectiveness of removal of PLRV sources in crops. It is concluded that in Scotland insecticide granules should be used routinely only in crops of the highest grade of seed potato. Their use for other grades need be considered only in years following mild winters, when aphids can be expected to enter crops earlier and in larger numbers.  相似文献

The green peach aphid,Myzus persicae,is one of the most threatening pests in pepper cultivation and growers would benefit from resistant varietices.Previously,we identified two Capsicum acessions as susceptible and three as resistant to M.persicae using an aphid population originating from the Netherlands(NL).Later on we identified an aphid population originating from a diferent gcographical region(Switserland,SW)that was virulent on all tested Capsicum acessions.The objeetive of the current work is to describe in detail diferent aspects of the interaction between two aphid populations and two sclected Capsicum acessions(one that was susceptible[PB2013046]and one that was resistant[PB2013071]to population NL),including biochemical processes involved.Electrical penetration graph(EPG)recordings showed similar feeding activities for both aphid populations on PB2013046.On acession PB2013071 the aphid population sw was able to devote significantly more time to phloem ingestion than population NL.We also studied plant defense response and found that plants of acession PB2013046 could not induce an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and callose formation after infestation with either aphid population.However,plants of PB2013071 induced a stronger defense response after infestation by population NL than after infestation by population SW.Based on these results,population SW of M.persicae seems to have overcome the resistance of PB2013071 that prevented feeding of aphids from NL population.The potential mechanism by which SW population overcomes the resistance is discussed.  相似文献

A method is presented for the estimation of nucleotide diversity and genetic structure of populations from RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) data. It involves a modification of the technique developed by Lynch and Crease (1990) for the case of restriction sites as survey data. As new elements the method incorporates (i) dominance correction, (ii) values of asexual reproduction of the populations sampled, and (iii) an analytical variance of the number of nucleotide substitutions per site. Sampling was carried out at two geographic scales for three aphid species. At a macrogeographic scale, populations of Rhopalosiphum padi did not show statistical genetic differentiation. Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae, which were sampled at a microgeographic scale, showed a higher genetic differentiation than R. padi, it being statistically significant in M. persicae. The major sources of sampling variance within- and between-populations were found to be nucleotide (i.e., the number of alleles used as a function of the number of primers used) and population (i.e., sample size) sampling. Extremely low estimates of nucleotide diversity were obtained for the species studied here. This result is consistent with previous reports on genetic diversity for the same or other aphid species which were based on allozyme polymorphism, mitochondrial DNA variation and qualitative analyses of RAPDs.  相似文献

The numbers of the potato aphids, Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Myzus persicae, were counted on potatoes undersown and not undersown with perennial ryegrass in field experiments during 1980 and 1981. The numbers of aphids on potatoes undersown with grass were found generally to be smaller than the aphid numbers on potatoes not undersown with grass. Tuber yields were not significantly reduced by the undersowing of potatoes. The agronomic feasibility of undersowing potatoes for aphid control is discussed.  相似文献

Relative consumption of three aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) (Homoptera: Aphididae), by larvae of the lacewing, Chrysoperla rufilabris (Burmeister) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), was determined in the laboratory, together with effects on lacewing development and survival. Percentages of survival of C. rufilabris from first instar to adult eclosion were significantly different among lacewing larvae fed different aphid species. When larvae were fed A. gossypii and M. persicae, all larvae developed to adulthood. All larvae died prematurely when they were fed L. erysimi. Developmental duration of C. rufilabris larvae was significantly shorter when larvae were fed A. gossypii (18.0 d) than when larvae were fed M. persicae (19.2 d). The number of fourth instar aphids consumed during development by C. rufilabris larvae differed significantly among individuals fed different aphid species. Chrysoperla rufilabris consumed an average of 168 M. persicae, followed by 141.6 A. gossypii, and only 26.6 L. erysimi. The percentage of these total number of aphids consumed by each larval stadium of C. rufilabris varied significantly among aphid species. The percentage of A. gossypii consumed by each larval stadium was similar to that for M. persicae, 12.1 and 11.4% by the first instar, 15.7 and 13.1% by the second instar, and 72.2 and 75.5% by the third instar, respectively; whereas in the case of L. erysimi, 23.3% of the total number of aphids were consumed by the first instar, 30.1% by the second instar, and 46.6% by the third instar.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers from a total number of 226 populations of Allium oleraceum were determined in Finland, Sweden and seven other countries. Two different chromosome numbers or cytotypes were found, tetraploids (2n = 32) and pentaploids (2n = 40). In Finland, samples were collected for chromosome counts from a total of 190 populations, which fairly well covers the distribution area of the species in Finland. The majority of the populations of A. oleraceum in Finland contained only one of the two cytotypes. A clear pattern in the geographical distribution of the cytotypes could be distinguished. The pentaploid cytotype predominates in the Åland Islands and in the archipelago of Regio aboënsis. The tetraploid cytotype predominates on the mainland of the Regio aboënsis and along the coast of the Nylandia. In south Häme, all studied native populations were of the tetraploid cytotype. Of all the studied populations in Finland 43.7% were tetraploid and 51.6% pentaploid. A few mixed populations with both tetraploid and pentaploid plants occurring in the same population were also found (4.7%). The chromosome numbers of 19 populations of A. oleraceum from the southern part of Sweden were pentaploids, with the exception of one tetraploid population. It seems that the pentaploid cytotype is predominant in Sweden, but no conclusions about a geographical pattern between the two cytotypes could be drawn. Based on the occurrence of the cytotypes, it is suggested that the pentaploid cytotype might have spread to Finland from the Swedish east coast via the Åland Islands to Kaland on the Finnish west coast and along the coast of Nyland to the archipelagos of Kotka and Hamina in Karelia australis. The tetraploid populations in south Häme are clearly connected to Iron Age activity and to old inland trade routes, and may be of eastern origin.  相似文献

Commercially-grown potato cultivars were assessed for antibiotic resistance to Myzus persicae in a culture room at 19°C with a 2°C range and a 16 h photoperiod. The resistant rankings obtained were consistent for the following aphid metrics: maturation time, teneral adult weight, embryo complement and the production of nymphs. Intrinsic rates of increase (rm) correlated with the above parameters of aphid growth and reproduction but this was not always the case for nymphal survival rate. The cultivars Ulster Tarn, Record and Maris Piper were relatively resistant to M. persicae and cultivars Desirée and King Edward were the most susceptible. When the aphid clone or the culture plants were changed there was no significant effect on the relative resistance of the potato cultivars under test. The relationship between the number of embryos in teneral adults and the production of nymphs by aphids was examined by grouping aphids in weight batches. Little is known about the simultaneous effects of drought stress and plant resistance on herbivorous insects. By subjecting the green peach aphid Myzus persicae Sulzer to well‐watered and drought‐stressed plants of both susceptible and resistant peach (Prunus persica), the effects of both stressors on aphid performance and proteomics are tested. Overall, the influence of the water treatment on aphid performance is less pronounced than the effect of host plant genetic resistance. On the susceptible cultivar, aphid survival, host acceptance and ability to colonize the plant do not depend on water treatment. On the resistant cultivar, aphid survival and ability to colonize are higher on drought‐stressed than on well‐watered plants. A study examining the pattern of protein expression aiming to explain the variation in aphid performance finds higher protein expression in aphids on the drought‐stressed susceptible cultivars compared with the well‐watered ones. In the susceptible cultivar, the regulated proteins are related to energy metabolism and exoskeleton functionality, whereas, in the resistant cultivar, the proteins are involved with the cytoskeleton. Comparison of the protein expression ratios for resistant versus susceptible plants reveals that four proteins are down‐regulated in well‐watered plants and 15 proteins are down‐regulated in drought‐stressed plants. Drought stress applied to the susceptible cultivar induces the regulation of proteins in M. persicae that enable physiological adaptation to maintain an almost unaltered aphid performance. By contrast, for aphids on the resistant cultivar subjected to drought stress, the down‐regulation of proteins responds to an induced host susceptibility effect.  相似文献

1. To maximise their reproductive success, the females of most parasitoids must not only forage for hosts but must also find suitable food sources. These may be nectar and pollen from plants, heamolymph from hosts and/or honeydew from homopterous insects such as aphids. 2. Under laboratory conditions, females of Cotesia vestalis, a larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) which does not feed on host blood, survived significantly longer when held with cruciferous plants infested with non‐host green peach aphids (Myzus persicae) than when held with only uninfested plants. 3. Naïve parasitoids exhibited no preference between aphid‐infested and uninfested plants in a dual‐choice test, but those that had been previously fed aphid honeydew significantly preferred aphid‐infested plants to uninfested ones. 4. These results suggest that parasitoids that do not use aphids as hosts have the potential ability to learn cues from aphid‐infested plants when foraging for food. This flexible foraging behaviour could allow them to increase their lifetime reproductive success.  相似文献

Young leaves of the potato Solanum tuberosum L. cultivar Kardal contain resistance factors to the green peach aphid Myzuspersicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and normal probing behavior is impeded. However, M. persicae can survive and reproduce on mature and senescent leaves of the cv. Kardal plant without problems. We compared the settling ofM. persicae on young and old leaves and analyzed the impact of aphids settling on the plant in terms of gene expression. Settling, as measured by aphid numbers staying on young or old leaves, showed that after 21 h significantly fewer aphids were found on the young leaves. At earlier time points there were no difference between young and old leaves, suggesting that the young leaf resistance factors are not located at the surface level but deeper in the tissue. Gene expression was measured in plants at 96 h postinfestation, which is at a late stage in the interaction and in compatible interactions this is long enough for host plant acceptance to occur. In old leaves of cv. Kardal (compatible interaction), M. persicae infestation elicited a higher number of differentially regulated genes than in young leaves. The plant response to aphid infestation included a larger number of genes induced than repressed, and the proportion of induced versus repressed genes was larger in young than in old leaves. Several genes changing expression seem to be involved in changing the metabolic state of the leaf from source to sink.  相似文献

We analysed linear measurements on various parts of the body and the configuration of 11 landmarks on the wing in a large sample of Ephedrus persicae that had emerged from 13 aphid host species, to assess whether static allometry (a measure of the scaling relationship between traits in a population of individuals at the same ontogenetic stage) accounts for variation in body shape. The analysed specimens came from several localities in Europe, Asia Minor, Japan and South America, and cover a large portion of the distribution area of E. persicae. We found that allometry accounts for variation in body shape among different biotypes within the E. persicae group. The allometric slopes for head size (HD), petiolus width (PETW), mesoscutum width (MSC), and ovipositor sheath length (OVPL) diverged significantly among biotypes, indicating biotype-specific allometries. The analysis of allometric variation in wing shape showed that the pattern and direction of allometric changes also differed among individuals that had emerged from different hosts. Our results (observed divergences in the directions of allometric slopes of particular morphometric traits and wing shape) suggest that allometric relations within E. persicae are not conserved, so that allometry itself changes, evolving differently in aphid parasitoids that emerge from different hosts.  相似文献

1. Life‐history traits of herbivores are shaped by the combination of various extrinsic and intrinsic variables. However, studies investigating the impact of both variables on insect behavioural phenotypes are rare, and research including the modulation of host plant quality by arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) (extrinsic variable) and the herbivore developmental stage (intrinsic variable) on aphid behaviour is lacking. 2. To study the influences of extrinsic and intrinsic variables on aphid performance and behaviour, individuals of the generalist aphid pest Myzus persicae (Sulzer) were reared on Plantago lanceolata and Poa annua plants that were either non‐mycorrhized (NM) or mycorrhized (AM). Aphid performance was monitored over 2 weeks. Behavioural traits of nymphs were recorded twice during development after removing individuals from their feeding sites and placing them in an unknown environment (‘open field’), causing disturbance. Plant quality was determined by measuring the water content and leaf mass per area (LMA). 3. Differences in body mass of nymphs at day 6 dependent on plant species and treatment were compensated by the individuals within 4 days. Behavioural traits, considered as activity and exploration, were affected by the interaction between extrinsic and intrinsic variables (activity and exploration) and changed over ontogeny (activity). Independent of AM, a lower water content and LMA were recorded in P. annua leaves. 4. Overall, this study demonstrates that extrinsic and intrinsic variables need to be considered in combination and behavioural traits should be studied repeatedly during insect ontogeny to understand the complexity of microbe‐modulated plant–herbivore interactions.  相似文献

The oviposition response of predacious hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) to Brevicoryne brassicae L. and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Homoptera: Aphididae) in commercial broccoli, Brassica oleracea var. italica L., Plenck (Brassicaceae), fields was investigated at two sites over the course of a growing season. The hoverfly oviposition responses to these aphid species on different parts of the broccoli plant canopy were also examined. There were no hoverfly eggs on broccoli plants without aphids, egg numbers were very low on plants with fewer than 50 aphids, and no peak in oviposition relative to aphid numbers was observed. Within individual plants that were colonized by aphids, there was some oviposition on individual leaves without aphids, and no hoverfly eggs were seen on leaves that had more than 400 aphids. Leaves in the broccoli plant canopy, and the datasets associated with them, were divided into three sections vertically, ‘upper’, ‘middle’, and ‘lower’. Brevicoryne brassicae was more abundant in the upper and middle canopy sections, while M. persicae was found mostly in the lower section. The rate of hoverfly oviposition per aphid was higher in the upper section than in the two other sections. Modeling of the oviposition response using logistic regression showed that the presence of hoverfly eggs was positively correlated with numbers of each aphid species and sampling date.  相似文献
