The biomass production of three common aquatic macrophytes, viz. Azolla pinnata, Eichhornia crassipes andHydrilla verticillata, was high at the prevailing environmental conditions and by the enriched water of River Ganga. The biomass production ofAzolla andEichhornia was positively correlated with the orthophosphate phosphorus and nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of the enriched water. The biomass ofAzolla andHydrilla was positively correlated with the electrical conductivity of the water. The average yield of crude protein was highest in Azolla (8,520 kg.ha–1.yr–1), and somewhat lower inEichhornia (6,520 kg.ha–1.yr–1). The annual biogas production was highest inEichhornia (44,381 litres), and somewhat lower inAzolla (17,186 litres).  相似文献

Artificial rest reefs were set on sandy and rocky bottoms at 5–10 m depth along the coast of southern Japan. Mature thalli ofSargassum, Gelidium and other seaweds were transported from other coastal areas, packed in mesh bags and attached to the reefs to start the beds. After one year, the seaweed flora on the reef on a sandy bottom consisted of more than 20 species, includingSargassum spp. andGelidium amansii, which are important animal food species. Coralline algae were the dominants on the rocky bottom reefs. The lower biomass on reefs on the rocky bottom was due to grazing by urchins. The same number of species was present in the first and second years on reefs on sandy bottoms, but there were moreSargassum thalli the second year.Maximum algal biomass of the artificial reef in May of the second year was 9998 g wet wt m–2 in sandy areas, 441 g wet wt m–2 in boulder areas and 228 g wet wt m–2 in rocky areas. Reefs on rocky bottoms continued to be covered by coralline algae and several species ofCodium andDictyota.  相似文献

The abundance and productivity of benthic microalgae in coral reef sediments are poorly known compared with other, more conspicuous (e.g. coral zooxanthellae, macroalgae) primary producers of coral reef habitats. A survey of the distribution, biomass, and productivity of benthic microalgae on a platform reef flat and in a cross-shelf transect in the southern Great Barrier Reef indicated that benthic microalgae are ubiquitous, abundant (up to 995.0 mg chlorophyll (chl) a m–2), and productive (up to 110 mg O2 m–2 h–1) components of the reef ecosystem. Concentrations of benthic microalgae, expressed as chlorophyll a per surface area, were approximately 100-fold greater than the integrated water column concentrations of microalgae throughout the region. Benthic microalgal biomass was greater on the shallow water platform reef than in the deeper waters of the cross-shelf transect. In both areas the benthic microalgal communities had a similar composition, dominated by pennate diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Benthic microalgal populations were potentially nutrient-limited, based on responses to nitrogen and phosphorus enrichments in short-term (7-day) microcosm experiments. Benthic microalgal productivity, measured by O2 evolution, indicated productive communities responsive to light and nutrient availability. The benthic microalgal concentrations observed (92–995 mg chl a m–2) were high relative to other reports, particularly compared with temperate regions. This abundance of productive plants in both reef and shelf sediments in the southern Great Barrier Reef suggests that benthic microalgae are key components of coral reef ecosystems.Communicated by Environmental Editor, B.C. The present distribution of the invasive brown alga Sargassum muticum in the southwest Netherlands is updated. Populations of the alga were found to remain at their 1985 level in Lake Grevelingen, with a small eastward expansion into the Eastern Scheldt estuary. A new population for the brackish, non-tidal Lake Veere is reported. Within Lake Grevelingen S. muticum forms a persistent, extensive canopy of 100% cover (4,442.5 ± 525.6 g fresh wt m–2, 640.3 ± 75.8 g dry wt m–2) that has a marked effect upon the penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (reduced by 97% at 0.1 m). Surface sea water temperatures can be elevated by 2.7 °C above water not associated with a Sargassum canopy; furthermore, the dense canopy shades and hence reduces water temperatures below 0.1 m depth. Productivity studies indicate that assimilation occurs in the upper levels of the canopy (57.09 µg C mg dry wt–1 m–2 at a mean PAR rate of 106.7 J cm–2 h–1). Self-shading and a resultant decrease in the rate of assimilation was evident below the canopy.  相似文献

Number, biomass and production of phytoplankton, bacteria, micro- and mesozooplankton and turnover of labile and stable organic matter were measured in waters over some Capricornia round reefs, and over the reefs of Lizard Island. Primary production was 10 to 40 mg C m–3 d–1 but was lower over the living reefs. Microbial wet biomass in reef waters varied from 100 to 500 mg m–3, and production from 4 to 68 mg C m–3 d–1, which was commensurable with primary production. The biomass of microzooplankton (ciliates, zooflagellates and larvae) in waters of Lizard Island reefs reached 100–300 mg m–3. Mesozooplankton biomass at night in reef waters of Heron Island varied from 200 to 800 mg m–3. Its composition depended upon the tide phase. PB coefficients in bacterioplankton were 0.3 to 1.2 per day. The food demand of bacterioplankton in waters over the reefs was 5 to 20 times higher than the primary phytoplankton production. Labile organic matter (LOM) doubled in waters after it stayed over living reef for several hours. The turnover time of LOM in reef waters was as short as 1–2 weeks.  相似文献

Biosorption of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate by seaweed biomass   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Samples of various Sargassum species were collected in the Hong Kong marine environment and used for studies on biosorption of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP). Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the removal capacity and removal efficiency of the biosorbents. The DEHP removal ability was similar among beached seaweed and three freshly collected Sargassum species. Different physico-chemical factors were evaluated in order to enhance the performance of the biosorbents. Under optimized conditions (25 mg biomass, initial pH 4, 25 °C, 40 mg L–1 DEHP), the mean removal capacity of beached seaweed and Sargassum siliquastrum was 5.68 and 6.54 mg g–1, respectively. Examination of the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms showed that the biosorption phenomenon by these biosorbents could well be described by these models. Desorption of DEHP was also assessed with methanol, which showed the most satisfactory desorbing ability. Further study in multiple adsorption–desorption of DEHP by the biosorbents demonstrated the reusability of both beached seaweed and S. siliquastrum for biosorption of DEHP.  相似文献

An investigation of the hydrography and the population, production and biomass of plankton in the Red Sea, carried out during the METEOR cruise in summer 1987, aimed to describe the ecosystem characteristics during the SW monsoon period. Vertical profiles of in-vivo chlorophyll fluorescence intensity, measured in the presence of chlorphenyl-dimethyl-urea (CMU), are presented. Variations in the fluorescence pattern were observed and assumed to be due to the influence of a reef and surface influx of nutrient rich water from the Gulf of Aden into the Red Sea. This northward influx was driven by SE winds, caused by an unusual northward shift of the innertropical convergence zone up to 20°N in summer 1987. Integrated chlorophyll a values were calculated from fluorescence data. They showed a slight increase from north to south and higher pigment contents in August (8.7–20.2 mg m–2) than in July (3.3–9.0 mg m–2), the latter was attributed to the above mentioned influx. Calibration of the fluorescence measurements using cultures of a green alga and cyanobacterium indicated that there may have been an underestimate of the contribution of Oscillatoria populations to the chlorophyll a concentration of the samples. Fluorescence peaks were recorded in the lower part of the euphotic zone, indicating a deep maximum of phytoplankton and/or an increase in chlorophyll fluorescence per unit biomass at these depths.  相似文献

In 1981–1982 Abert Lake had an area of 200 km2, with a mean depth of 2.5 m and a total dissolved salt concentration of 82 gl-1. The spatial distribution and abundance of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, were monitored for 1981–1982. In 1981 during the midsummer months, with sampling primarily in the eastern side of Abert Lake, brine shrimp populations showed peak densities of 2–4 ind. 1-1. In 1982, peak abundance occurred in early July and ranged between 5–8 ind. 1-1. Lakewide estimates of brine shrimp derived from 14 collecting stations and assuming a uniform distribution over the lake resulted in estimates of lakewide abundance of 3 × 1011 adults with a total biomass of 7 × 106 kg. The major algal species in the lake was a benthic filamentous green alga (Ctenocladus circinnatus).  相似文献

The common herbivorous macroinvertebrates on reef flats of the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR) were, in order of abundance: gastropod molluscs (Turbo and Trochus spp.); pagurid crabs; and the starfish, Linckia laevigata. The density of macroinvertebrates on Davies Reef was lowest in the thick-turf habitats at the windward reef-crest (0.6–0.9 m–2) compared with 3.1 to 5.2 m–2 elsewhere on the reef flat. Invertebrate grazer densities were similar on mid-shelf reef flats (mean: 2.3–3.6 m–2) and significantly lower on outer-shelf reefs (0.3–1.0 m–2). The ingestion rate of Turbo chrysostomus, the most abundant macroinvertebrate species, was derived from (a) faecal production and food absorption efficiency, (b) comparison of algal biomass on grazed and ungrazed natural substrata and (c) gut-filling rate and feeding periodicity in field populations. The ingestion rate of Trochus pyramis, the most common trochid and an abundant component of the macroinvertebrate fauna, was also estimated using (a). This gastropod fed continuously, whereas T. chrysostomus showed a distinct nocturnal feeding periodicity. T. chrysostomus and T. pyramis ingested daily means of 35 and 54 mgC animal-1, respectively. Total gastropod grazing rates (mgC m–2d-1 in the field ranged from 11 in a thick-turf, reef-crest habitat to 144 on the open-grazed main flat. Grazing by gastropods accounted for between 0.3 and 8% of the net production of benthic algal food resources, depending on location on the reef flat. Across the whole reef flat the mean (areally-weighted) gastropod grazing rate was 6% of net production. A comparison of the relative roles of different types of grazers led to the conclusion that fishes are likely to have the greatest overall trophic impact on reefs of the central GBR. Even where macroinvertebrates are most abundant on reef flats, the yield from benthic algal communities to macroinvertebrates is estimated to be only one third of that due to fishes.Contribution no. 471 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Herbivory is widely accepted as a key process determining the benthic community structure and resilience of coral reefs. Recent studies have mostly focused on the importance of roving herbivorous fishes in ecosystem processes. Here, we examine the role of territorial damselfish in shaping patterns of macroalgal distribution based on benthic surveys and macroalgal bioassays. The territory composition and effect of resident damselfish on the removal of Sargassum bioassays were quantified for six species of damselfish on Lizard Island, a mid-shelf reef in the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The functional composition of algal communities within territories varied markedly among species. The territories of four species (Dischistodus perspicillatus, Dischistodus pseudochrysopoecilus, Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus, and Stegastes nigricans) were characterized by algal turfs, while the territories of two species (Dischistodus prosopotaenia and Hemiglyphidodon plagiometopon) were characterized by foliose and leathery brown macroalgae. Sargassum, a generally rare alga on mid-shelf reefs, was a particularly common alga within D. prosopotaenia territories on the leeward side of the island but absent within their territories on the windward side of the island. D. prosopotaenia was the only species to retain the transplanted Sargassum, with only a minimal reduction in Sargassum biomass (1.1%) being recorded within their territories at both leeward and windward sites over a 24-h period. In contrast, reductions in Sargassum biomass were high in areas adjacent to D. prosopotaenia territories (83.8%), and within and adjacent to the territories of the five remaining damselfish species (76.2–92.5%). Overall, only one of the six damselfish species provided a refuge for leathery brown macroalgae and may facilitate the development of this macroalgae on mid-shelf reefs of the GBR.  相似文献

Since terrestrial invertebrates are often consumed by stream fishes, land-use practices that influence the input of terrestrial invertebrates to streams are predicted to have consequences for fish production. We studied the effect of riparian land-use regime on terrestrial invertebrate inputs by estimating the biomass, abundance and taxonomic richness of terrestrial invertebrate drift from 15 streams draining catchments with three different riparian land-use regimes and vegetation types: intensive grazing — exotic pasture grasses (4 streams), extensive grazing — native tussock grasses (6 streams), reserve — native forest (5 streams). Terrestrial invertebrate drift was sampled from replicated stream reaches enclosed by two 1 mm mesh drift nets that spanned the entire channel. The mean biomass of terrestrial invertebrates that entered tussock grassland (12 mg ash-free dry mass m–2 d–1) and forest streams (6 mg AFDM m–2 d–1) was not significantly different (p > 0.05). However, biomass estimated for tussock grassland and forest streams was significantly higher than biomass that entered pasture streams (1 mg AFDM m–2 d–1). Mean abundance and richness of drifting terrestrial invertebrates was not significantly different among land-use types. Winged insects contributed more biomass than wingless invertebrates to both pasture and tussock grassland streams. Winged and wingless invertebrates contributed equally to biomass entering forest streams. Land use was a useful variable explaining landscape-level patterns of terrestrial invertebrate input for New Zealand streams. Evidence from this study suggests that riparian land-use regime will have important influences on the availability of terrestrial invertebrates to stream fishes.  相似文献

The aerial microalga Trentepohlia aurea has beeninvestigated in relation to removal characteristics of nitrate, nitrite, ammonium and phosphate ions. When the alga was cultured in medium with veryhighconcentrations of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate ions, it showed relativelyhigh growth and removal rates. It also grew quite well with high nitriteconcentration (< 141 mg NO2-N L–1).The removal rate was 0.28 mg NO2-N L–1day–1 in the 40-day culture, when it was cultured in modifiedBold's basal medium with added 51 mg NO2-NL–1. In addition, we examined simultaneous removal of nutrientions. The biomass was 1.5 times higher in medium which N- and P-sourcesufficient than in ordinary medium. Higher removal ratios of nitrite andnitratefrom medium were shown in a 30-day culture, reaching 37% and 32%, respectively. It is concluded that T. aurea has the potential for use inthe purification of wastewater.  相似文献

Summary The influence of temperature on the growth of the theromophilic Bacillus caldotenax was investigated using chemostat techniques and a chemically defined minimal medium. All determined growth constants, that is maximal specific growth rate, yield and maintenance, were temperature dependent. It was striking that the very large maintenance requirement was about 10 times higher than for mesophilic cells under equivalent conditions. A death rate, which was very substantial at optimal and supraoptimal growth temperatures, was estimated by comparing the maintenance for substrate and oxygen. There was no indication for a thermoadaptation as postulated by Haberstich and Zuber (1974).Symbols D Dilution rate (h–1) - Dc=max Critical dilution rate (h–1) - E Temperature characteristic (J mol–1) - k Organism constant - kd Death rate coefficient (h–1) - km Maintenance substrate coefficient estimated from MO (h–1) - MO Maintenance respiration, mmol O2 per g dry biomass and h (mmol g–1h–1) - MO Maintenance respiration, taking kd into account - mS Maintenance substrate coefficient, g glucose per g dry biomass and h (h–1) - OD Optical density at 546 nm - QO2 Specific O2-uptake rate (mmol g–1h–1) - Q O2 V Specific O2-uptake rate for viable portion of biomass (mmol g–1 h–1) - QS Specific glucose uptake rate (h–1) - Q S V Specific glucose uptake rate for viable portion of biomass (h–1) - R Gas constant 8.28 J mol–1K–1 - S Substrate concentration in reactor (g l–1) - SO Influent substrate concentration (g l–1) - Tmax Maximal growth temperature (°C) - Tmin Minimal growth temperature (°C) - X Dry biomass (g l–1) - XtOt=X Dry biomass containing dead and viable cells - Xv Viable portion of biomass - Y O m Potential yield for O2 corrected for maintenance respiration (g mol–1) - Y S m Potential yield for substrate corrected for maintenance requirement, g biomass per g glucose (–) - Specific growth rate (h–1) - max Maximal specific growth rate (h–1)  相似文献

Between 1992 and 2000, we sampled 504 randomly chosen locations in theFlorida Keys, Florida, USA, for the elemental content of green leaves of theseagrass Thalassia testudinum. Carbon content ranged from29.4–43.3% (dry weight), nitrogen content from 0.88–3.96%, andphosphorus content from 0.048–0.243%. N and P content of the samples werenot correlated, suggesting that the relative availability of N and P variedacross the sampling region. Spatial pattern in C:N indicated a decrease in Navailability from inshore waters to the reef tract 10 km offshore;in contrast, the pattern in C:P indicated an increase in P availability frominshore waters to the reef tract. The spatial pattern in N:P was used to definea P-limited region of seagrass beds in Florida Bay and near shore, and anN-limited region of seagrass beds offshore. The close juxtaposition ofN–and P-limited regions allows the possibility that N loading from thesuburban Florida Keys could influence the offshore, N-limited seagrass bedswithout impacting the more nearshore, P-limited seagrass beds.  相似文献

Macroalgal blooms have increased globally in recent decades as a result of increased nutrient enrichment and eutrophication of coastal waters. In Lee County, Florida, this problem reached a critical stage in 2003/2004 when massive rhodophyte blooms washed ashore, making beaches unsuitable for recreation and requiring an expensive removal program. To better understand the ecology of these blooms, water quality and macroalgae sampling was conducted in August 2004, prior to hurricane Charley, and again in late October following several months of large freshwater discharges from the Caloosahatchee River. During both samplings, water and macroalgae were collected along a gradient extending from the Caloosahatchee River to natural and artificial reefs up to 26 km from shore.Dissolved nutrient concentrations were generally high throughout the study area, with significantly higher concentrations in the Caloosahatchee River. Mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations in the Caloosahatchee River increased from Ortona Lock (<18 μM) to Franklin Lock (23–28 μM) downstream during both samplings, indicating significant enrichment within the basin. On coastal reefs, mean ammonium concentrations increased six-fold (≤0.20–1.31 μM) and soluble reactive phosphorus increased three-fold (0.30–0.92 μM) from August to October, respectively. Mean reef macroalgae C:N ratios were low and similar in August (13.9) and October (13.5), and C:P and N:P ratios were also low but decreased significantly from August to October (386–242 and 27.4–17.5, respectively). Macroalgal δ15N values increased from Ortona Lock (+8 to 9‰) to Franklin Lock (+12 to 15‰) during both samplings, were within the sewage nitrogen range, and decreased with increasing distance from shore to +3.0‰ at the most offshore reef. Macroalgae (Gracilaria, Hypnea, Botryocladia, Eucheuma, Sargassum) collected in July 2004 from Lee County beaches had mean δ15N values >+6.0‰, similar to values for macroalgae on inshore reefs and within the sewage nitrogen range. However, mean δ15N values of reef macroalgae decreased from August (+5.84‰) to October (+3.89‰) as Caloosahatchee River discharges increased, suggesting relatively larger contributions from nitrogen sources with low δ15N values (<+3‰), such as rainfall and agricultural fertilizers, in the wet season. Improved management of freshwater releases from Lake Okeechobee, combined with nutrient removal from sewage effluent within the Caloosahatchee River drainage basin, could help mitigate future macroalgal blooms in Lee County's coastal waters.  相似文献

Coral communities at Moorea, French Polynesia, and on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, were severely depleted by disturbances early in the 1980s. Corals were killed by the predatory starfish Acanthaster planci, by cyclones, and/or by depressed sea level. This study compares benthic community structure and coral population structures on three disturbed reefs (Vaipahu-Moorea; Rib and John Brewer Reefs-GBR) and one undisturbed reef (Davies Reef-GBR) in 1987–89. Moorea barrier reefs had been invaded by tall macrophytes Turbinaria ornata and Sargassum sp., whereas the damaged GBR reefs were colonised by a diverse mixture of short macrophytes, turfs and coralline algae. The disturbed areas had broadly similar patterns of living and dead standing coral, and similar progress in recolonisation, which suggests their structure may converge towards that of undisturbed Davies Reef. Corals occupying denuded areas at Vaipahu, Rib and John Brewer were small (median diameter 5 cm in each case) and sparse (means 4–8 m-2) compared to longer established corals at Davies Reef (median diameter 9 cm; mean 18 m-2). At Moorea, damselfish and sea urchins interacted with corals in ways not observed in the GBR reefs. Territories of the damselfish Stegastes nigricans covered much of Moorea's shallow reef top. They had significantly higher diversity and density of post-disturbance corals than areas outside of territories, suggesting that the damselfish exerts some influences on coral community dynamics. Sea urchins on Moorea (Diadema setosum Echinometra mathaei, Echinotrix calamaris) were causing widespread destruction of dead standing coral skeletons. Overall, it appears that the future direction and speed of change in the communities will be explicable more in terms of local than regional processes.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that the rate of formation of streptokinase, a secondary metabolite, in batch fermentation is proportional to the specific growth rate of the biomass, which in turn is inhibited by its substrate and the primary product (lactic acid). These kinetics suggest the suitability of fed-batch operation to increase the yield of streptokinase. A near-optimal feed policy has been calculated by the chemotaxis algorithm, and it shows a substrate feed rate decreasing nonlinearly and vanishing after 11 hours. This is followed by batch fermentation for a further 8 hours, at the end of which 12% more streptokinase is generated than by purely batch fermentation. The suitability of differentGracilaria spp. and twoSargassum species for bioconversion to methane was determined through bioassays of methane yield.Gracilaria species and strains were excellent feedstocks for high methane yields, ranging from 0.28 to 0.40 m3 kg–1 volatile solids added. These yields ranged from 58 to 95% of theoretical stoichiometric yields. Methane yields were highly correlated with acid soluble carbohydrate components of theGracilaria spp. BothSargassum fluitans andS. pteropleuron were poor feedstocks, with methane yields ranging from 0.12 to 0.19 m3 kg–1 volatile solids added, 27 to 46% of theoretical stoichiometric yields, respectively. The various tissue types of theseSargassum species were also poor feedstocks for anaerobic digestion to methane. While there is no clear explanation for the low methane yields, the twoSargassum spp. appear to contain a high proportion of an insoluble, non-extractable component which may not be available as a substrate for bioconversion to methane.  相似文献

Macroalgal beds have been suggested to be an important settlement habitat for a diversity of reef fishes, yet few studies have considered how the composition or structure of macroalgal beds may influence fish settlement. The aim of this study was to investigate how the physical characteristics of Sargassum beds, a common macroalga on inshore coral reefs, influence the abundance of recently-settled rabbitfishes (Siganidae) on Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef. The abundance of recently-settled rabbitfish (< 3 cm total length), the density and height of Sargassum thalli, and benthic composition were quantified within replicate 1-m2 quadrats across 15 mid-reef flat sites. A total of 419 recently-settled rabbitfish from three species (Siganus doliatus, S. lineatus and S. canaliculatus) were recorded across 150 quadrats (range 0–16 individuals m−2), with S. doliatus accounting for the majority (85.2%) of individuals recorded. The abundance of S. doliatus and S. lineatus was greatest at moderate Sargassum densities (ca. 20–30 holdfasts m−2) and generally increased with Sargassum height and the cover of ‘other’ macroalgae. These findings demonstrate the potential importance of the physical characteristics of macroalgal beds to the settlement of rabbitfishes on inshore reef flats.

Waste biomass Sargassum sp. biosorbed 100% of Cd2+ and 99.4% of Zn2+ from a 3 and 98 mg l–1 solution (pH 4.5), respectively, at the end of four serial experiments. Of the five desorbents studied in consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, CaCl2 0.05 M eluted nearly 40% of both metals and decreased the biosorption in only 8% and 17% of Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively. Although NaOH desorbent improved the heavy metal uptake from the second cycle onwards, it did not elute metals from the pre-loaded biomass.  相似文献
