The diversity pattern of holothurian echinoderms during the late Triassic-early Jurassic is quantitatively analysed to examine the effect of different taxonomic approaches. Whereas sclerite morphospecies indicate major faunal change during the Norian with significant extinction in the Upper Norian. changes are less pronounced for parafamilies and least for biologically based groups. Perceived diversity patterns are subject to bias. including a significant effect of relative research effort on morphospecies and parafamily data. A large proportion of Lazarus taxa in the Rhaetian-Hettangian indicates a sampling problem due to preservational or geographic bias. * Holothurian. Detailed palynological research carried out on samples from the three quarries at Khlevnoye and Kamenka (Voronezh region) permitted recognition of the Frasnian-Famennian boundary in the lower Kamenka quarry. Two miospore zones, Cristatisporites deliquescens-Verrucosisporites evlanensis (DE) from the Frasnian and Cyrtospora cristifera-Diaphanospora zadonica (CZ) from the Famennian, have been recognized. Some faunistic data were also obtained from the F-F boundary deposits. Research confirmed the existence of a sedimentological gap between the Livny and Zadonsk horizons, including all of the Volgograd horizon. These new palynological results are compared with data from adjacent areas: Pripyat Depression (Belarus), Timan-Pechora Province and the Volgograd Volga region (Russia), western Pomerania and the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland).  相似文献

The Canning Basin of northwestern Australia is a key area for understanding global changes at the “Kellwasser Events” and the Frasnian‐Famennian boundary. Frasnian stromatoporoid‐coral‐cyanobacterial reef platforms stretched out for enormous distances along the palaeoshelf but in the early Famennian they were completely replaced by cyanobacterial reef platforms. An iridium anomaly in the sequence was formerly believed to be at or close to the boundary and was interpreted as possible evidence for an asteroid impact. Recent field work and detailed biostratigraphy in the area east and southeast of Fitzroy Crossing has given dating relevant to the timing and extent of sea level changes, hypoxic incursions and reef backstepping. Goniatites and conodonts provide correlations with the international biostratigraphy.

In the Horse Spring area the stage boundary falls within the Virgin Hills Formation which normally has a rich pelagic goniatite, nautiloid and conodont fauna. In the latest Frasnian (Zone 13 of Klapper 1989; regional Sphaeromanticoceras lindneri Zone) large allochthonous reef blocks moved downslope into the open marine basin. A diverse gastropod fauna is associated with the last atrypid brachiopods. The faunal record at the immediate boundary is obscured by dolomitisation but manticoceratid goniatites range into this level. There is no evidence for the organic‐rich dark Kellwasser limestone facies.

In the McWhae Ridge area two Frasnian goniatite horizons with Beloceras trilobites and the giant Mamicoceras guppyi and Sphaeromanticoceras lindneri transgress over the reef slope. Stromatolitic cyanobacterial beds mark condensations. Again there is no trace of the oxygen‐depleted Kellwasser facies. However, as at Horse Spring, manticoceratids persisted into dolomitic marker beds that have no other preserved macrofauna. The iridium anomaly associated with Frutexites postdates the Frasnian‐Famennian boundary and was formed by cyanobacterial concentration.  相似文献

The section at Shangsi in Sichuan contains one of the most detailed and best records of events during the Permian/Triassic (P/T) mass extinction. Continuous deep water deposition is only punctuated by a minor shallowing in the late Changxingian. The micritic mudstones and wackestones of the Changxingian Dalong Formation contain abundant ammonoids and radiolaria and diverse and common benthic taxa (mostly bivalves and brachiopods) in a thoroughly bioturbated sediment. The presence of a well developed tiered burrow profile is just one line of evidence for a fully oxygenated water column in the late Permian. The faunal crisis occurs in the top few decimetres of the Dalong Formation and severely affected all groups (benthos, nekton and plankton). The extinction coincides precisely with the development of anaerobic and dysaerobic facies. The basal Triassic sediments of the Feixanguan Formation are thinnly‐bedded or laminated silicic marls and contain pyrite and several levels of elevated organic carbon concentrations. The fauna is restricted to rare ammonoids and a few bedding planes covered in Claraia. The presence of abundant coccoid cyanobacteria in these sediments may indicate an unusually simple trophic web in the early Triassic seas as these picoautotrophs are normally grazed by zooplankton, they are rarely directly incorporated into seafloor sediment. The recent discovery of black shales in P/T pelagic sediments of Japan indicates that the anoxic event also affected deep ocean waters and further strengthens the link between extinction and anoxia.  相似文献

Middle Devonian conodonts from the Si Phai section in NE Vietnam are described. The section ranges from the Middle Devonian ensensis to timorensis conodont zones to the Late Devonian rhomboidea conodont Zone. A rich overall assemblage is described, including 27 taxa of species or subspecies rank and 11 taxa described in an open nomenclature. Among the dominant Polygnathus forms, four new taxa are described: Polygnathus linguiformis saharicus subsp. nov., Polygnathus linguiformis vietnamicus subsp. nov., Polygnathus rhenanus siphai subsp. nov., and Polygnathus xylus bacbo subsp. nov. Conodont assemblages are attributed to polygnathid, polygnathid-klapperinid, and klapperinid conodont biofacies representing hemipelagic to pelagic environments. The klapperinid biofacies, unreported in the previous literature, are here attributed to offshore areas of the external shelf. The taxonomic compositions of the studied conodont assemblages, as well as their CAI characteristics (CAI 4–5), suggest a palaeogeographic affinity of the studied strata to the Chinese Devonian Guangxi Basin, and the South China Terrane in general. In order to detect whether the end-Frasnian worldwide biotic crisis is related to an extraterrestrial impact, the global stratotype section of the Frasnian-Famennian boundary and auxiliary sections within the stratotype area have been examined for impact indicators: iridium. Ni-rich spinel bearing spherules and glassy microtektites. This area is particularly well suited to the search for discrete events because it exhibits biostratigraphically continuous sections of sedimentologically homogenous off-shore deposits. Different environmental settings on oxygenated deep-water seamounts, such as the stratotype section at Coumiac, and in oxygen-depleted depressions (La Serre section) are available. The latter is investigated in more detail because it is the least condensed across the boundary, which is determined by the first occurrence of the typical morphotype of Palmatolepis triangularis, the indicator of the first Famennian conodont biozone. Samples from the biostratigraphically defined boundary and adjacent levels failed to provide significantly high Ir values and no Ni-rich spinel or microtektite has been recovered. This is in contradiction with the results of earlier investigations carried out by H. Geldsetzer on the same section. In contrast, the values of Ir concentrations that we measured are always very low or not detectable. The small overabundances observed in some samples, which are about two orders of magnitude lower than what is currently observed at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, are probably due to the accumulation of the normal flux of cosmic dust during periods of relatively low depositional rates or to a terrestrial origin. At present, we have no evidence that an extraterrestrial impact occurred at the F-F transition.  相似文献

The Frasnian-Famennian boundary is recognized as the culmination of a global mass extinction in the Late Devonian. In western New York State the boundary is a distinct horizon within a pyritic black shale bed of the upper Hanover Shale defined by the first occurrence of Palmatolepis triangularis in the absence of Frasnian conodonts. The boundary is characterized by a minor disconformity marked by a lag concentration of conodonts. Iridium at the boundary is 0.11-0.24 ng/g, two to five times background levels of <0.05 ng/g; other Ir enrichments of 0.38 ng/g and 0.49 ng/g occur within 50 cm of the conodont-constrained boundary. Numerous Ir enrichments in the boundary interval suggest extraterrestrial accretion and platinum group element (PGE) concentration at disconformities, or mobilization and concentration in organic-rich/pyritic-rich laminations from cosmic or terrestrial sources. PGE ratios of Pt/Pd and Ku/Ir at the boundary horizon approximate chondritic ratios and are suggestive of an unaltered extraterrestrial source. These values do not conclusively establish a single extraterrestrial impact as the ultimate cause of the Frasnian-Famennian mass extinction, especially given the presence of similar Ir enrichments elsewhere in the section and the absence at the boundary of microtektites and shocked mineral grains.  相似文献

Jiang, H., Aldridge, R.J., Lai, X., Yan, C. & Sun, Y. 2010: Phylogeny of the conodont genera Hindeodus and Isarcicella across the Permian–Triassic boundary. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 374–382. Several phylogenetic hypotheses have been put forward to explain the relationships between species of the conodont genera Hindeodus and Isarcicella across the Permian–Triassic boundary. These phylogenetic models can be tested by cladistic analysis. A data matrix of 25 P1 element characters for 22 species of Hindeodus and Isarcicella has been analysed and the resulting cladogram converted to a phylogenetic tree using the ranges of taxa in the Meishan Section, China. The proposed phylogeny does not concur entirely with any of those forwarded in the previous literature, and Hindeodus parvus is not resolved as a direct descendant of Hindeodus praeparvus. Species assigned to the genus Isarcicella form a natural group, with Hindeodus species apparently representing a paraphyletic array. The Hindeodus + Isarcicella clade survived the end‐Permian extinction event well, with Hindeodus species that became extinct just above the boundary replaced by radiation within the Isarcicella clade. □Cladistics, conodonts, phylogeny, Permian, Triassic.  相似文献

Antiarchi (Pisces, Placodermi) from the Devonian of central and southern European Russia (Central Devonian Field) are studied. Antiarchs belong to three families, the Asterolepididae, Remigolepididae (suborder Asterolepidoidei), and Bothriolepididae (suborder Bothriolepidoidei). The diagnoses of the order, two suborders, three families, and five genera (two of which are new) are given. Sixteen species, including one new, are described; ten taxa are determined in open nomenclature. Morphological structures of representatives of these families are considered in detail. Classifications of antiarchs and their position in the system of the lower vertebrates are discussed. Devonian vertebrate localities of central and southern European Russia that have yielded antiarchs are listed. Each locality is characterized by its ichthyoassemblage.  相似文献

Trends in generic diversity of successive conodont communities are analysed in sections of different environmental settings across the Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) boundary in the stratotype area, Montagne Noire, France. The evolution of conodont biofacies and abundances matches the overall pattern already observed in many sections elsewhere in the world and supports the interpretation of an important eustatic sea-level fall during the Upper Kellwasser event. The change from late Frasnian deep-water palmatolepid–polygnathid biofacies to shallower-water polygnathid-icriodid biofacies during the Upper Kellwasser event occurred in all sections studied. The shallowing trend culminated at the end of the Kellwasser Event as indicated by the substantial increase of formerly poorly represented icriodids, whereas palmatolepids concomi-tantly diminished. This event occurred earlier on oxygenated outer platform submarine rises than in oxygen-depleted depressions. The sudden sea-level fall prior to the Frasnian–Famennian boundary was followed, at the beginning of the Famennian, by a deepening trend when palmatolepids dominated again. These changes in conodont generic associations and abundances occurred rapidly and synchronously. As a result, the stratigraphic resolution obtained with the evolution of biofacies is higher: it permits not only a more accurate location of the base of the Upper Kellwasser event in environments where it cannot be distinguished lithologically, but it also allows the recognition of intrazonal gaps.  相似文献

Fishes are often thought to have passed through mass extinctions, including the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) event, relatively unscathed. We show that neoselachian sharks suffered a major extinction at the K/T boundary. Out of 41 families, 7 became extinct (17±12%). The proportional measure increases at lower taxic levels: 56±10% loss of genera (loss of 60 out of 107) and 84±5% loss of species (loss of 182 out of 216). However, the Maastrichtian and Danian are characterized by a high number of singleton taxa. Excluding singletons we have calculated a 34±11% loss of genera and a 45±9% loss of species. The simple completeness metric (SCM) for genera displays a decrease from the Maastrichtian (94%) to the Danian (85%) indicating a rather complete fossil record of neoselachian genera. The extinctions were heavy among both sharks and batoids (skates and rays), but most severe among batoids, which lost almost all identifiable species. There were equal losses among open marine apex predators (loss of Anacoracidae, Cretoxyrhinidae, and Scapanorhynchidae) and durophagous demersal forms from the continental shelf and shallow seas (Hypsobatidae, Parapaleobatidae, Sclerorhynchidae, Rhombodontidae). Benthopelagic and deep-sea forms were apparently little affected. New families with similar ecological roles (Carcharhinidae, Isuridae, Torpedinidae) replaced these families in the Danian, and full diversity of the different shark and batoid groups had been recovered by the end of the Paleocene or early Eocene. Sharks and rays suffered levels of extinction entirely in line with other groups of organisms at the K/T extinction event.  相似文献

Dinoflagellate cysts and planktonic foraminifers have been studied from the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary interval at El Haria (northwest Tunisia). A high-resolution integrated biostratigraphy is presented. The K/T boundary is drawn at the level of extinction of Cretaceous planktonic foraminifers and is coincident with the first occurrence of the dinoflagellate cyst species Danea californica. The final extinction of planktonic foraminifers is foreshadowed by a reduction in their total abundance some 5 kyr earlier at the base of the boundary clay. This reduction is coeval with reported anomalies in siderophyle elements and δ13C-values in the same area. Dinoflagellate cysts do not show accelerated rates of extinction at K/T time. Associations of dinoflagellate cysts, however, change drastically and parallel changes in relative numbers of sporomorphs (spores and pollen) and in the quantity of land-derived organic matter. Jointly, these changes reflect a rapidly falling sea level during the final 17 kyr of the Mesozoic which culminates at the level of the K/T boundary. This steep sea level fall at K/T time represents a peak regressive pulse at the end of the well-documented latest Cretaceous regressive trend. This short-term sea level fall might show to be a wide-spread phenomenon which could have caused an excess shrinking of the already reduced areal extent of marginal seas. Since deep waters in Cretaceous oceans were primarily produced in shallow marginal seas, the rate of formation of deep water might have been minimized at K/T time. Minimum rates of formation of deep water might have curtailed the slow upward mixing of relatively cool and nutrient-rich deeper water through which the thermocline weakened and surficial waters became depleted in nutrients. Consequently, phytoplankton productivity rapidly diminished which, in combination with a weakened thermal gradient, pushed the highly depth-stratified Cretaceous planktonic foraminiferal fauna to extinction over a period of time of some 5 kyr. Guembelitria cretacea was the sole planktonic foraminifer which could accommodate to the low productivity conditions. The oscillating rise in sea level at the beginning of the Cenozoic reinforced the upward mixing of relatively cool and nutrient-rich deeper water, steepened the thermocline and replenished the photic layer with nutrients. Concomitant niche-differentiation in the photic layer progressively stimulated morphological innovation amongst early Cenozoic planktonic foraminifers. The final return of normally-sized planktonic foraminifers and of stable and well-balanced dinoflagellate cyst associations at about 125 kyr after the K/T boundary seems to indicate that primary productivity and niche differentiation in the photic layer begin to revert to optimum levels. The earliest Cenozoic planktonic foraminiferal species Globoconusa minutula and Parvularugoglobigerina fringa are thought to have developed from a benthic foraminiferal species rather than having a planktonic ancestry.  相似文献

This work studied the ecological integrity of river ecosystems inside the Ordesa‐Viñamala Biosphere Reserve in the central Spanish Pyrenees. Despite its protected status, the reserve endures a considerable number of human stresses, thus the aim was to evaluate the conservation status of the two river basins inside the protected area: The Gállego River Basin, inside the transition zone of the protected area and which allows a wide range of human activities; and the Ara River Basin, inside the buffer zone where only sound ecological practices are authorised. The environmental status of river ecosystems was analysed by studying fish and macroinvertebrate communities, hydrochemical and habitat characteristics and by calculating environmental quality indices. From August to September 2011, a total of 14 sites were sampled. Fish sampling was conducted using electrofishing gear, and macroinvertebrate were sampled by applying the IBMWP and IASPT procedures. Results showed that, while the Ara River Basin maintains a solid ecological integrity, the Gállego River Basin endures important habitat alteration. Trout, the dominant and exclusive species in the Ara River, were absent and replaced by translocated native cyprinids in the Gállego River Basin. This colonisation was explained by the alteration of the stream ecosystems and their homogenisation. The study of macroinvertebrate communities and the diagnosis obtained with the environmental quality indices also enhanced the deficient ecological integrity of some sites in the Gállego River. The results suggest that the Biosphere Reserve is not providing adequate protection to streams inside its boundaries, leading to major degradation of their biological integrity.  相似文献

It is now recognized that the late Telychian and early Gorstian sea level changes are, like many others in the Silurian, of world‐wide extent. The 30–50 m deepening events at these times were between 1 and 2 Ma in duration, so melting continental ice caps appear to be the most probable cause. The faunal changes associated with the two events are respectively very close to the base and the top of the Wenlock Series and thus segregate many of the faunas diagnostic of the Llandovery, Wenlock, and Ludlow series. Permanent extinctions (often followed by radiations) are more prevalent in the graptolites, conodonts, and acritarchs, while benthic faunas are more affected by regional shifts in community distributions. This means that, in the benthos, slowly evolving lineages are the only reliable guides to time. Such phyletic evolution, however, appears to have been unaffected by sea‐level events.  相似文献

New bryozoans from the Middle-Upper Devonian (Eifelian-Frasnian) and the Lower Carboniferous (Tournaisian) of the Holy Cross Mountains in central Poland are described: Bigeyella sparsa gen. et sp. nov., B. separata gen. et sp. nov., Eridopora singula sp. nov., Leptotrypa pulchra sp. nov., Kysylschinipora klarae sp. nov., Coelotubulipora rara sp. nov., Alternifenestella genuina sp. nov., Exfenestella polonica sp. nov., and Rectifenestella localis sp. nov. Some paleogeographic and stratigraphic aspects of the Paleozoic deposits of this region are discussed and main bryozoan localities are described.  相似文献

Mangroves are halophytic plants living at the land–sea interface and are therefore natural trackers of sea-level. Multiple proxies of a continuous (8 m) mangrove peat core (BT-79) from Spanish Lookout Cay, Belize illustrate mangrove ecosystem changes during the Holocene. Radiocarbon measurements show this site was colonized by mangroves ~ 8000 cal. yrs BP, with a significant decrease in the peat accumulation rate from ~ 6000 to 1000 cal. yrs BP. Stratigraphic characteristics of this peat core such as bulk density, magnetic susceptibility, and loss on ignition show relative uniformity, inferring an uninterrupted mangrove ecosystem during a majority of the Holocene. This is supported by pollen data from BT-79 that show that the site has been consistently dominated by Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove), with Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) and Laguncularia racemosa (white mangrove) present as well. Subfossil R. mangle leaves are used for stable nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen isotope (δ15N, δ13C, and δ18O) analyses. δ15N and δ13C values provide a proxy of this plant's past physiology and stand structure showing that dwarf (δ15N < − 3‰) and tall (δ13C < − 27‰) R. mangle stands were previously present at the site, which are a result of nutrient limitations that we equate with seawater inundation. δ18O values show differences in source water of R. mangle, with higher values attributed to the source water being composed of a greater proportion of seawater relative to precipitation. A decrease in inundation at the site is shown by lower δ18O values (< 19‰) from ~ 7000 to ~ 1000 cal. yrs BP that covary with the decreased sedimentation rate. Existing Caribbean sea-level data do not show evidence of a decrease in the rate of relative sea-level rise or fluctuations that we take to be the major causes of environmental changes at site BT-79.  相似文献

The detection of two males and one female of Amphipsylla sibirica sepifera on three Clethrionomys glareolus is pointed out. The rodents were taken in Alt Aneu and Espot, two towns of Lerida (a Spanish Province). The finding of this flea species on Spanish Pyrenees increases to the west its geographical distribution and adds one new species to the Iberian flea fauna.  相似文献

The Cellon section, located in the Carnic Alps, is a reference section for the Silurian of the world. The conodont association of the section is revised according to the most recent taxonomy and the biostratigraphy updated in the basis of the recently published zonation schemes. Seventy taxa (species and sub‐species) belonging to 23 genera have been identified, allowing the discrimination of 15 biozones from the upper Llandovery to the end of the P?ídolí . However, some of the uppermost Llandovery and Wenlock biozones, corresponding to black shale intervals, have not been documented.  相似文献
