Sex differences in maternal behavior induced by pup stimulation (sensitization) have been reported for rats and hamsters and may be affected by the presence or absence of perinatal androgen treatment. Postpartum maternal behavior and litter survival in golden hamsters treated with testosterone propionate (TP) as neonates were studied. A high dose of TP (300 μg) eliminated feminine reproductive capacity when given on Day 2 or 4 postpartum and had no discernible effect on Day 12. Treatment on Days 6, 8, or 10 resulted in treatment day-dependent deficiencies in reproductive success which fell short of sterility in most females. These deficiencies included low birth weight, weight gain, and higher litter losses than controls. However, the maternal behavior of TP dams, as measured by retrieval and crouching, appeared to be normal. The disparity between delivery and successful rearing of normal-weight young may include uterine incompetence, lactation deficiency, and hypercannibalism. Behavioral masculinization was a more sensitive index of neonatal androgen action than any aspect of defeminization, but the two phenomena were dissociated in individuals.  相似文献

Neonatal vitamin A stores are limited even in well-nourished full-term infants and are yet smaller in the premature infant. The object of this experiment was to determine whether vitamin A deficiency could be induced in pregnant guinea pigs and, if so, whether it would affect vitamin A status of the neonate. Adult (600 g) guinea pigs were fed a casein-agar diet that was vitamin A deficient (AD). Controls (vitamin A adequate) were orally dosed weekly with 2 mg of retinyl palmitate. Weight gains of dams and birth weights of neonates did not differ. No external signs of deficiency were observed. Six of eight AD and seven of eight vitamin A-adequate dams carried pregnancy to term (greater than or equal to Day 64). One AD dam died during delivery. Liver retinol concentrations were below the detection limit (less than 3 micrograms/g) for all AD neonates and dams and in postpartum serum of AD dams. Of neonates born greater than or equal to Day 64, 15 of 18 AD were dead or moribund compared with 4 of 22 vitamin A adequate. The unexpectedly severe effect on the neonate indicates that the guinea pig will be a sensitive model for investigating the affect of poor maternal vitamin A status on neonatal vitamin A-dependent functions. However, a less severe maternal deprivation should be used for such studies.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of hypergravity exposure on the developing brain and specifically explored the possibility that these effects are mediated by altered thyroid status. Thirty-four timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to continuous centrifugation at 1.5 G (HG) from gestational Day 11 until one of three key developmental points: postnatal Day (P) 6, P15, or P21 (10 pups/dam: 5 males/5 females). During the 32-day centrifugation, stationary controls (SC, n = 25 dams) were housed in the same room as HG animals. Neonatal body, forebrain, and cerebellum mass and neonatal and maternal thyroid status were assessed at each time point. The body mass of centrifuged neonates was comparatively lower at each time point. The mass of the forebrain and the mass of the cerebellum were maximally reduced in hypergravity-exposed neonates at P6 by 15.9% and 25.6%, respectively. Analysis of neonatal plasma suggested a transient hypothyroid status, as indicated by increased thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level (38.6%) at P6, while maternal plasma TSH levels were maximally elevated at P15 (38.9%). Neither neonatal nor maternal plasma TH levels were altered, suggesting a moderate hypothyroid condition. Thus, continuous exposure of the developing rats to hypergravity during the embryonic and neonatal periods has a highly significant effect on the developing forebrain and cerebellum and neonatal thyroid status (P < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected). These data are consistent with the hypothesized role of the thyroid hormone in mediating the effect of hypergravity in the developing central nervous system and begin to define the role of TH in the overall response of the developing organism to altered gravity.  相似文献

Data on 550 healthy pregnant women, 550 healthy fathers and their healthy term neonates born from singleton pregnancies (37(+0) through 41(+6) week) during a one-year period were reviewed. Maternal mean age was 27.7 +/- 9.37 years, mean pregestational weight 64.0 +/- 9.50 kg, mean gestational weight gain 15.4 +/- 4.33 kg, mean height 169.7 +/- 5.81 cm, and mean gestational age 40.1 +/- 0.95 weeks. Paternal mean age was 31.4 +/- 6.22 years, mean weight 84.6 +/- 10.35 kg, and mean height 182.8 +/- 6.84 cm. Mean birth weight was 3,709.8 +/- 500.48 g and 3,562.5 +/- 443.02 g, and mean birth length 51.5 +/- 1.91 cm and 50.7 +/- 1.62 cm in male and female newborns, respectively, yielding a birth weight greater by 147.3 g and birth length by 0.8 cm in the former. Study variables showed statistically significant correlations: maternal age contributed to the significant correlation between maternal weight and parity, maternal pregestational weight, weight at delivery, gestational weight gain and body height correlated significantly with neonatal birth weight and birth length, gestational age correlated significantly with neonatal weight and length (p = 0.01 all), parity had no major impact (p > 0.05). Paternal height and weight correlated significantly with neonatal birth weight and birth length (p = 0.01). Study results pointed to a significant correlation of maternal pregestational weight, gestational weight gain and body height, and of paternal weight and height with the neonate birth weight and birth length.  相似文献

The incidence of neonatal morbidity and mortality in rats exposed to opiates in utero is generally high. To determine the extent to which neonatal opioid intoxication and/or withdrawal contribute to this effect, addicted pups from dams treated chronically with the long-acting opioid levo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) and appropriate controls were injected within 12 h of birth with saline, an opioid agonist (LAAM and metabolites) or an antagonist (naloxone). The incidence of neonatal mortality for pups born to dams maintained on a high dose of LAAM was 52%. A single injection of agonist on the first day of life reduced mortality in this group to 29% while a single injection of the antagonist increased mortality to 88%. In contrast, administration of the agonist to control pups and pups born to dams maintained on lower doses of LAAM resulted in increased mortality. Naloxone was apparently innocuous in non-dependent neonates. These data show that, despite LAAM's long duration of action in the mature rat, newborn rats experience withdrawal soon after drug exposure is terminated. These data also indicate that continued opioid exposure is a highly effective means of treating/preventing severe spontaneous withdrawal in the newborn.  相似文献

Background

Reducing neonatal mortality is a major public health priority in sub-Saharan Africa. Numerous studies have examined the determinants of neonatal mortality, but few have explored neonatal danger signs which potentially cause morbidity. This study assessed danger signs observed in neonates at birth, determined the correlations of multiple danger signs and complications between neonates and their mothers, and identified factors associated with neonatal danger signs.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in three sites across Ghana between July and September in 2013. Using two-stage random sampling, we recruited 1,500 pairs of neonates and their mothers who had given birth within the preceding two years. We collected data on their socio-demographic characteristics, utilization of maternal and neonatal health services, and experiences with neonatal danger signs and maternal complications. We calculated the correlations of multiple danger signs and complications between neonates and their mothers, and performed multiple logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with neonatal danger signs.

Results

More than 25% of the neonates were born with danger signs. At-birth danger signs in neonates were correlated with maternal delivery complications (r = 0.20, p < 0.001), and neonatal complications within the first six weeks of life (r = 0.19, p < 0.001). However, only 29.1% of neonates with danger signs received postnatal care in the first two days, and 52.4% at two weeks of life. In addition to maternal complications during delivery, maternal age less than 20 years, maternal education level lower than secondary school, and fewer than four antenatal care visits significantly predicted neonatal danger signs.

Conclusions

Over a quarter of neonates are born with danger signs. Maternal factors can be used to predict neonatal health condition at birth. Management of maternal health and close medical attention to high-risk neonates are crucial to reduce neonatal morbidity in Ghana.  相似文献

Female Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to a short (6L:18D) photoperiod from 21 days of age were mated when they reached 55 days of age. On Day 2 of gestation animals were pinealectomized or sham-operated. On Day 5 after birth male pups of the two groups of dams were either pinealectomized or sham-operated. They were killed at 42 and 49 days of age. In offspring born to sham-operated dams and in those born to pinealectomized mothers, neonatal pineal ablation resulted in increased testicular testosterone and androstenedione content. In sham-operated and neonatally pinealectomized rats removal of the maternal pineal gland induced a decrease in testicular testosterone and androstenedione content. In contrast, after maternal pinealectomy there was a decrease in plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone values and testicular dihydrotestosterone content in sham-operated rats but not in those neonatally pinealectomized. We conclude that (1) the pineal glands of the mother and offspring are required to maintain normal testicular testosterone and androstenedione content in the rat, and (2) the pineal of the offspring influences the inhibitory effects of maternal pinealectomy on testicular dihydrotestosterone content and on plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone concentration in the offspring.  相似文献

In rats of the CPB-B strain, the female shows normal parturition behaviour and normal capacity of milk secretion, but the young - all born alive - die within few days of birth. Here, we report that this postnatal mortality is eliminated when CPB-B neonates are crossfostered to mothers of the Wu:Cpb strain; conversely, Wu:Cpb neonates (which are successfully reared by dams of their own strain) die within few days of birth when crossfostered to newly parturient CPB-B rats. It is suggested that pup mortality in CPB-B rats is due to inadequate maternal care resulting, supposedly, from susceptibility of the mother to disturbing environmental stimuli.  相似文献

Piglet mortality is a major problem in organic pig production affecting both farm economy and animal welfare. Knowledge is scarce on the risk factors of piglet mortality in Danish commercial organic pig production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate season, litter size, parity, sow body condition and stillborn littermates as risk factors for early piglet mortality and crushing of liveborn piglets from parturition until castration at day 3 to 5 postpartum (pp). The study was conducted over a 1-year period in nine commercial Danish organic pig herds practicing outdoor farrowing all year round. Data included recordings on 3393 farrowings with 50 284 liveborn piglets of which 14.8% died before castration. A subset of the dead piglets were collected and necropsied to identify crushed piglets. The average number of liveborn piglets per litter was 14.8 (SD=3.7) and the average time from parturition until castration was 4.1 (SD=1.7) days. A negative binomial regression analysis was used to model the effect of the predictive variables on the early piglet mortality accounting for different time periods from parturition to castration. An increase in maternal body condition score (BCS) and parity significantly increased the risk of dying between parturition and castration. Early mortality was found to be lowest during spring (March to May) and highest during summer (June to August). Being born into a litter with one or more stillborn littermates increased the risk of early mortality. The risk factors for crushing of piglets were evaluated using a logistic analysis. A significant effect of parity and litter size was found where the odds of at least one piglet in a litter with mortality was diagnosed as crushed increased with increasing parity and litter size. In conclusion, being born during summer (June to August), high parity and maternal BCS and stillborn littermates were found to be risk factors for piglet mortality between parturition and castration. In addition, parity and increasing litter size were found to be risk factors for crushing of piglets in litters with mortality.  相似文献

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) demonstrate significant variation in reproductive output on both a yearly and lifetime basis in comparison to other anthropoid primates. We explore the factors that may be most important in determining reproductive variation in captive common marmosets. Studies have found that maternal age, maternal condition, and dam survivorship are related to reproductive output; however, these reports are not in agreement and are far from conclusive. With the use of a large, multicolony, demographic database pooling data across five marmoset colonies, we examined litter information for 1,649 litters, and reproductive summaries for 400 dams to assess 1) how reproductive output variation (total production, total weaned production) is determined by litter size, interbirth interval (IBI), age at first birth, and dam survival age; 2) the relationship between maternal age and reproductive output variables; and 3) relationship between the reproductive output variables and survival. We used stepwise regression procedures to describe the amount of variation in lifetime reproductive output among dams, and found that mean litter size accounted for 18% of the variance in total production, survival age accounted for 10.6%, age at first birth accounted for 8.8%, and mean IBI accounted for 5%. For total (nonzero) weaned production, survival age accounted for 7.6% of variance, age at first birth accounted for 7.2%, mean IBI accounted for 2%, and mean litter size accounted for 1.6%. We identified significant effects (P<0.05) of maternal age on litter size and IBI length, but no effect of dam age on weaned litter size. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses revealed significant effects (P<0.01) of number of litters, age at first birth, and site on dam survivorship. Dams that produced more litters showed higher survivorship. Age at first birth showed a positive relationship with dam survivorship, i.e., dams that delayed first reproduction had higher survival. Our findings about reproductive variation in marmosets may have practical applications for the management of marmoset breeding colonies.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that selective breeding for high voluntary wheel running negatively affects maternal performance in house mice, we observed maternal behavior and compared litter size and mass, in replicate lines of selected (N=4) and control (N=4) mice from generations 20 and 21 of an artificial selection experiment. At generation 21, selected-line females ran 2.8-times more revolutions per day than females from random-bred control lines, when tested at approximately 6 weeks of age as part of the normal selection protocol. After giving birth, dams from selected and control lines exhibited similar frequencies of maternal behaviors and also spent similar amounts of time in general locomotor activity at litter ages of both 9 and 16 days. Dams from selected lines also performed equally well as controls in repeated pup-retrieval trials. At first parturition, selected-line dams averaged 2.4 g smaller in body mass as compared with dams from the control lines; however, neither litter size nor litter mass at birth (generation 20) or at weaning (generation 21) differed significantly between selected and control lines. We conclude that, at least under the husbandry conditions employed, maternal behavior and reproductive output at first parturition are genetically independent of wheel-running behavior.  相似文献

Captive colonies of cotton top tamarins experience a high rate of rejection of infants within the 1st week of life. The rates of rejection and survival to maturity (2 or more years) among 659 live colony-born infants were correlated with rearing, birth group, litter size, season of birth, gender, origin of parents, experience of parents raising siblings, parity and age of parents, and experience of parent pairs. The most important factors associated with low rejection rates were family life and parental experience raising infants. Infants born into family groups or reared in families were rejected at a significantly lower rate. Rejection of infants whose sires were raised with siblings was significantly lower. Paternal experience was more important than maternal experience. Litter size had no effect on rejection of infants born to family groups, whereas, rejection of triplets was significantly higher than twins or singles among those born to parents alone. Rejection was significantly higher among primiparous births than multiparous birth. The combined experience of colony-born parents was not related to rejection if there were no sibling helpers in the cage at the time of birth. Rejection was significantly lower if sibling helpers were present. High survival of infants who were not rejected was correlated with rearing by or being born into family groups and higher parity and older age of the sires.  相似文献

Cellular retinol-binding protein II (CRBP II) is a member of the cellular retinol-binding protein family, which is expressed primarily in the small intestine. To investigate the physiological role of CRBP II, the gene encoding CRBP II was inactivated. The saturable component of intestinal retinol uptake is impaired in CRBP II(-/-) mice. The knockout mice, while maintained on a vitamin A-enriched diet, have reduced (40%) hepatic vitamin A stores but grow and reproduce normally. However, reducing maternal dietary vitamin A to marginal levels during the latter half of gestation results in 100% mortality/litter within 24 h after birth in the CRBP II(-/-) line but no mortality in the wild type line. The neonatal mortality in heterozygote offspring of CRBP II(-/-) dams (79 +/- 21% deaths/litter) was increased as compared with the neonatal mortality in heterozygote offspring of wild type dams (29 +/- 25% deaths per litter, p < 0.05). Maternal CRBP II was localized by immunostaining in the placenta at 18 days postcoitum as well as in the small intestine. These studies suggest that both fetal as well as maternal CRBP II are required to ensure adequate delivery of vitamin A to the developing fetus when dietary vitamin A is limiting.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to observe the effects of strenuous maternal aerobic exercise throughout gestation on fetal outcome in the rat. The strenuous exercise intensity consisted of a treadmill speed of 30 m.min-1 on a 10 degrees incline, for 120 min.day-1, 5 days.week-1. The rats were conditioned to run on a motor-driven treadmill by following a progressive two-week exercise program, so that by the end of the two weeks the rats were capable of running comfortably at this strenuous intensity in the non-pregnant state. Following the two-week running programme, the rats were paired by weight and randomly assigned to either a pregnant group that continued the running program throughout gestation (pregnant runner), or a pregnant group that did not continue the running program throughout pregnancy (pregnant control). At birth the neonates born to the pregnant running group did not differ in average neonatal body weight values, number per litter or total litter weight values when compared to controls, nor were superficial gross abnormalities observed in neonates born to the pregnant control or pregnant running groups. The strenuous maternal exercise intensity did not alter neonatal organ weight values (brain, heart, liver, lung, kidney), nor neonatal skeletal muscle (gastrocnemius, sternomastoid, diaphragm) when compared to control values. It is suggested that maternal exercise of this intensity throughout gestation does not affect fetal outcome in the rat, and may be due to the animals accustomization to the strenuous exercise protocol prior to pregnancy.  相似文献

In this study, litter sizes, birth weights and survival rates of neonates in superovulated rats treated with aminoglutethimide phosphate (AGP) were studied. Young (8- to 9-week old) and adult (14- to 16-week old) rats were treated with 20 or 40 IU PMSG between 1100 and 1300 hours on the day of early diestrus, followed by identical doses of hCG 52 to 54 hours later. These rats received 10 mg AGP on Days 0 to 2 of pregnancy (AGP rats). The duration of pregnancy in the AGP-treated and control rats was about the same. Mean live litter sizes in young and in adult AGP rats treated with 20 IU PMSG and 20 IU hCG were significantly higher (15.5 and 15.4; P<0.01) than in the control rats (11.5 and 12.6). When AGP was given to young and adult rats pretreated with 40 IU PMSG and 40 IU hCG, they produced means of 17.7 and 17.3 live neonates, respectively. The birth weights for young (5.55 to 5.88 g) and adult (5.89 to 5.96 g) AGP rats were smaller than those of respective control rats (6.44 and 6.40 g; P < 0.05-0.01). When the number of neonates was adjusted to 8 per dam for nursing and rearing, all of them were alive at 5 weeks after birth and showed normal growth. However, body weight gains of the progeny of AGP dams were lower than those of controls. These results indicate that rats treated with large doses of gonadotropins and AGP produce larger litter sizes than nontreated controls.  相似文献

Child mortality (the mortality of children less than five years old) declined considerably in the developing world in the 1990s, but infant mortality declined less. The reductions in neonatal mortality were not impressive and, as a consequence, there is an increasing percentage of infant deaths in the neonatal period. Any further reduction in child mortality, therefore, requires an understanding of the determinants of neonatal mortality. 209,628 birth and 2581 neonatal death records for the 1998 birth cohort from the city of S?o Paulo, Brazil, were probabilistically matched. Data were from SINASC and SIM, Information Systems on Live Births and Deaths of Brazil. Logistic regression was used to find the association between neonatal mortality and the following risk factors: birth weight, gestational age, Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes, delivery mode, plurality, sex, maternal education, maternal age, number of prior losses, prenatal care, race, parity and community development. Infants of older mothers were less likely to die in the neonatal period. Caesarean delivery was not found to be associated with neonatal mortality. Low birth weight, pre-term birth and low Apgar scores were associated with neonatal death. Having a mother who lives in the highest developed community decreased the odds of neonatal death, suggesting that factors not measured in this study are behind such association. This result may also indicate that other factors over and above biological and more proximate factors could affect neonatal death.  相似文献

Litter size increased (P less than 0.01) as the age of the dam at farrowing increased. However, previous reproductive experience (parity) had no direct effect on litter size of dams of the same age.  相似文献

Stable individual differences in activity levels within populations have been linked to differences in reproductive rate or parental care in several species, including American mink (Neovison vison). Fur‐farmed mink are good models for studying such effects because they yield large sample sizes and readily allow investigations into maternal behaviour, reproductive success, offspring performance and the relationships between these factors. On farms, very inactive individuals generally have smaller litters, and this held true in our study populations. We tested two competing hypotheses to explain this: (1) inactive individuals are failing to cope with a challenging environment and experiencing chronic stress and/or depression‐like ‘apathy’; this predicts female‐skewed litters, poorer maternal care, higher infant mortality and poorer infant growth and (2) inactive individuals do not have reduced fitness but instead employ an alternative adaptive reproductive strategy, trading off offspring quantity for quality; this predicts enhanced maternal care, reduced infant mortality and enhanced infant growth. Inactive females’ kits, especially their sons, grew faster than active females’, even after statistically controlling for litter size; and by 21 d, inactive and active dams’ litters no longer differed in total biomass, despite the former’s smaller litter sizes. In kit retrieval tests, inactive females were faster than active dams to reach their sons (as well as more likely to contact their sons than their daughters: a bias towards male kits not evident in the active dams). Furthermore, kit growth rates and dam latencies to touch them co‐varied, suggesting the existence of consistent differences in maternal style across inactive and active dams. Hypothesis 2 was thus supported: inactive females favour offspring quality over quantity, investing more resources in fewer kits, particularly males. This potentially boosts their sons’ adult fitness. More broadly for laboratory‐based studies, possible ‘captivity effects’ on the fitness correlates of activity and other personality traits are discussed.  相似文献

Iodine deficiency disorders affect reproductive performance in the afflicted populations. Environmental iodine deficiency (ID) and goitrogens are important in their aetiology. We observed earlier that chronic maternal dietary ID but not goitrogen feeding altered the blood-brain barrier nutrient transport in adult rats. Whether similar differences exist in their effects on reproduction of dams and postnatal performance of the offspring has been assessed. Inbred, female, weaning WNIN rats were rendered hypothyroid by feeding for 8-12 weeks, a low iodine test diet or a control diet with added potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) (@ 25 mg/rat/day). Following mating with control males, they continued on their respective diets till their pups were weaned. Indices of reproductive performance such as percentage of conception, mortality of dams during pregnancy and parturition, litter size, and survival of pups till weaning were affected markedly by ID but not thiocyanate feeding. Neither ID nor thiocyanate feeding from conception or parturition affected their reproductive performance. Nevertheless, postnatal weight gain of pups was less in all the three ID groups but not thiocyanate fed dams. Rehabilitation of chronically ID pregnant dams from conception or parturition did not improve their pregnancy weight gain, litter size or birth weight of pups but decreased abortion and mortality of mothers during pregnancy and parturition. Rehabilitation improved the pups' postnatal weight gain but the effect was only moderate. Based on the results of the present study it may be suggested that maternal ID but not thiocyanate feeding affects reproductive performance and postnatal performance of their offspring.  相似文献

Analyses of lamb survival of Scottish Blackface sheep   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Scottish Blackface lamb viability records at birth, and postnatal survival from 1 day to 14 days, from 15 days to 120 days and from 121 days to 180 days were used to determine influential factors and to estimate variance components of lamb survival traits. The binary trait viability at birth was analysed using a linear model whereas the postnatal survival traits were analysed as continuous traits using a Weibull model. The data consisted of about 15 000 survival records of lambs born from 1996 to 2005 on two farms in Scotland. The models included fixed factors that had significant effects and random direct and maternal additive genetic effects and maternal litter effects for viability at birth, and sire and maternal litter effects for the postnatal survival traits. The possible effect of maternal behaviour measured around lambing on lamb survival was investigated in separate analyses. Male lambs were found to be at a higher risk of mortality than females during all periods considered. The effect of type of birth and age of dam was more important during the preweaning period than at later ages. The postnatal hazard rate was not significantly affected by the behaviour score of the dams. The genetic merit of dams had more influence on viability at birth than the genetic merit of lambs themselves. Estimates of heritability for postnatal survival traits were in the range of 0.18 to 0.33 and were significantly greater than zero. These results indicate that lamb survival can be improved through farm management practices and genetic selection. Both animal and maternal genetic effects should be considered in breeding programmes for improving viability at birth.  相似文献
