Sericea lespedeza [Lespedeza cuneata (Dum. Cours) G. Don.] is a perennial legume with high polyphenol (tannin) concentration. The decomposition and nutrient release of sericea lespedeza residues with two tannin levels (high = 22% or low = 16%), which were either placed on the soil surface or buried at a depth of 5 cm were studied. An experiment was carried out at two sites for 2 yr. Litter mass loss and nutrient (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, B, Mo, Co) release were recorded. Litter mass loss was higher for the low-tannin residues and for those buried. From the beginning of the experiments, the C : N ratio was lower than 25 : 1 and N was mineralized for most of the studied cases; this means that N increased in availability to plants. The release of the rest of the studied nutrients was higher at the depth of 5 cm than on the soil surface and higher for low-tannin residues than for high-tannin. The observed accumulation of some nutrients in the first months presumably depended on microbial activity. The rate of release was higher for the macronutrients than for the micronutrients, with the exception of B, which had the same behaviour as the macronutrients. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Mineral nutrient malnutrition, and particularly deficiency in zinc and iron, afflicts over 3 billion people worldwide. Wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, genepool harbors a rich allelic repertoire for mineral nutrients in the grain. The genetic and physiological basis of grain protein, micronutrients (zinc, iron, copper and manganese) and macronutrients (calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and sulfur) concentration was studied in tetraploid wheat population of 152 recombinant inbred lines (RILs), derived from a cross between durum wheat (cv. Langdon) and wild emmer (accession G18-16). Wide genetic variation was found among the RILs for all grain minerals, with considerable transgressive effect. A total of 82 QTLs were mapped for 10 minerals with LOD score range of 3.2–16.7. Most QTLs were in favor of the wild allele (50 QTLs). Fourteen pairs of QTLs for the same trait were mapped to seemingly homoeologous positions, reflecting synteny between the A and B genomes. Significant positive correlation was found between grain protein concentration (GPC), Zn, Fe and Cu, which was supported by significant overlap between the respective QTLs, suggesting common physiological and/or genetic factors controlling the concentrations of these mineral nutrients. Few genomic regions (chromosomes 2A, 5A, 6B and 7A) were found to harbor clusters of QTLs for GPC and other nutrients. These identified QTLs may facilitate the use of wild alleles for improving grain nutritional quality of elite wheat cultivars, especially in terms of protein, Zn and Fe.  相似文献

Solution culture was used to investigate whether the high solution Na concentrations and Na:Ca ratios found in sodic soils could directly affect the early growth and nutrient uptake of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Cotton was grown in nutrient solutions with three Na:Ca ratios (46:1, 4:1 and 0.2:1 mM) and three electrical conductivities (EC) (2.5, 4.25 and 6 dS m?1) combined in a factorial design with four replicates. Most cotton growth parameters (including shoot and root dry weight, fruit number and weight) were unaffected by increasing solution EC or Na:Ca ratio, but at the highest Na concentration (56.6 mM), plant height was reduced. It was concluded that young cotton has the ability to tolerate solution Na concentrations up to those found in moderately sodic soils. Increasing solution Na:Ca increased plant root and shoot concentrations and plant accumulation for Na, and decreased them for Ca. Increasing EC also increased plant Na concentration and accumulation. Shoot K and P concentrations decreased with EC, but actually increased as the sodicity (Na:Ca ratio) of the nutrient solution increased. The results suggest that the low K and P concentrations commonly found in cotton grown in sodic soils are not a direct result of Na:Ca ratio in the soil solution.  相似文献

Summary Aluminum toxicity is an important growth limiting factor for upland rice production on oxisols of cerrado region in Brazil. Data related to the effect of Al on uptake of nutrients for rice crop are limited. The effect of five Al concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 ppm) in culture solution on the chemical composition of 30 upland rice cultivars was studied.Aluminum concentration and content in plant tissues were increased with higher levels of Al in all cultivar. In the roots Al content was higher as compared with the tops. Critical toxic level of Al in the tops of 21 days old plants varied from 100 to 417 ppm depending on the cultivars. Rice cultivars responded differently to Al treatments with respect to nutrients uptake. Increased Al concentrations in the solution exerted an inhibiting effect on the concentrations and contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Na, Zn, Fe, Mn, B and Cu. Thus the inhibition was more effective for macronutrients in the plant tops in following order: Mg>Ca>P>K>N>S>Na. Whereas for micronutrients it was in the order of Mn>Zn>Fe>Cu>B. Morphological, physiological and biochemical effects of Al, toxicity responsible for the reduction in plant nutrient uptake, are discussed.  相似文献

Aims Conversion of secondary forests to pure larch plantations is a common management practice driven by the increasing demand for timber production in Northeast China, resulting in a reduction in soil nutrient availability after a certain number of years following conversion. Nutrient resorption prior to leaf senescence was related to soil fertility, an important nutrient conservation strategy for plants, being especially significant in nutrient-poor habitats. However, the seasonal dynamics of leaf nutrients and nutrient resorption in response to secondary forest conversion to larch plantations is not well understood. Methods A comparative experiment between larch plantations (Larix spp.) and adjacent secondary forests (dominant tree species including Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, Juglans mandshurica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla) was conducted. We examined the variations in leaf nutrient (macronutrients: N, P, K, Ca and Mg; micronutrients: Cu and Zn) concentrations of these tree species during the growing season from May to October in 2013. Nutrient resorption efficiency and proficiency were compared between Larix spp. and the broadleaved species in the secondary forests.Important findings Results show that the seasonal variation of nutrient concentrations in leaves generally exhibited two trends, one was a downward trend for N, P, K, Cu and Zn, and another was an upward trend for Ca and Mg. The variations in foliar nutrient concentrations were mainly controlled by the developmental stage of leaves rather than by tree species. Resorption of the observed seven elements varied among the five tree species during leaf senescence. Nutrient resorption efficiency varied 6–75% of N, P, K, Mg, Cu and Zn, while Ca was not retranslocated in the senescing leaves of all species, and Mg was not retranslocated in Larix spp. Generally, Larix spp. tended to be more efficient and proficient (higher than 6–30% and 2–271% of nutrient resorption efficiency and resorption proficiency, respectively) in resorbing nutrients than the broadleaved species in the secondary forests, indicating that larch plantations had higher leaf nutrient resorption and thus nutrient use efficiency. Compared with Larix spp., more nutrients would remain in the leaf litter of the secondary forests, indicating an advantage of secondary forests in sustaining soil fertility. In contrast, the larch plantation would reuse internal nutrients rather than lose nutrients with litter fall and thus produce a positive feedback to soil nutrient availability. In summary, our results suggest that conversion from secondary forests to pure larch plantations would alter nutrient cycling through a plant-mediated pathway.  相似文献

Mineral nutrients of seeds constitute a significant source ofessential elements to seedlings and developing individuals ofvascular plants. In spite of their potential ecological significance, seed nutrient pools have attracted little attention with respectto calcifuge–calcicole behaviour of plants. The objectivesof this study were, therefore, to compare concentrations of13 macro- and micronutrients (K, Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu,Zn, Mo, B, P and S) in seeds and leaves of 35 mainly herbaceousvascular plant species growing on both limestone (calcareous)and silicate (non-calcareous) soils. Concentrations of Rb andCo in seeds of plants originating from limestone soils were,on average, about half of those from silicate soils. Concentrationsof Mn, Mg, Zn and P of seeds were, or tended to be, lower orslightly lower in limestone-soil plants, whereas mean Ca andMo concentrations were higher. Comparing seed and leaf concentrationsof the same species from limestone and silicate soils generallydemonstrated a high P enrichment ratio, but a particularly lowK enrichment ratio in seeds, valid for both types of soil. Itwas also apparent that Fe and Mn, micronutrients which are lessreadily solubilized and taken up by plants on limestone soils, had significantly higher seed:leaf concentration ratios in plantsfrom limestone than from silicate soils, whereas the oppositewas true for Ca. This indicates a ‘strategy’ tosatisfy the demand of seedlings for elements which are lessreadily available in the soil.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Seed, leaf, plant, nutrient, content, calcareous, silicate, acid, soil.  相似文献

Summary Breakdown of dry matter and release of nutrients from decomposing leaf litter and forest-floor material were measured in a 34-year-old red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) plantation in central Wisconsin using (1) leaf-litter bags (2) litterfall and forest-floor nutrient data and an exponential decay function, and (3) nutrient flux data and a mass balance equation. After one year of decomposition, 77% of the original dry matter in leaf-litter bags remained. The release of macronutrients in decomposing leaf litter was K>Mg>P, S>N>Ca, and the release of micronutrients and aluminum was Mn, B>Al>Cu>Zn. Nitrogen in decomposing leaf litter showed the leaching, accumulation, and final release phases delineated by Berg and Staff4. Half-lives of dry matter and nutrients in the forest floor ranged from 0.5 (K) to 39 (Al) yr. Forest-floor turnover rates of the various elements followed the same trends as in leaf-litter bags except that Ca turned over more readily than P, S, and N and Zn turned over more readily than the other micronutrients. A forest-floor nutrient balance sheet confirmed that the macronutrients N and Ca are accumulating most readily in the forest floor. The overall implications of these trends for tree nutrition are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Trees growing along windy coasts often have canopies that are greatly reduced in size by the sculpting effects of wind and salt spray. Trees with environmentally reduced stature are called elfinwood (windswept shrub‐form or krummholz) and are ecologically important because they represent outposts growing at the limit of tree success. The purpose of this study was to assess if Banksia grandis elfinwood growing at Cape Leeuwin had a different nutrient status than normal low‐form (LF) trees growing nearby, and if nutrient deficiencies, toxicities and/or imbalances were among the limiting factors imposed on elfinwood. The concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo and B were analysed for mature green foliage, immature foliage, foliage litter, flowers and soil. When the elfinwood and LF trees were compared, the foliar nutrient status was generally similar, except that elfinwood foliage had significantly higher mean concentrations of N, Zn and Cu, while LF trees had higher Fe and Mn contents. Many nutrients were conserved before leaves were shed in both elfinwood and LF trees, including N, P, K, Na, Cl, Mn and Cu (LF trees also conserved Ca and Mg). However, elfinwood and LF tree‐litter contained significantly higher Fe concentrations than green foliage (elfinwood litter also had higher levels of Mg and B). It is tempting to suggest that the translocation of Fe into leaves before they were shed is a regulation mechanism to prevent Fe toxicity, or imbalance in the Fe : Mn ratio. Proteoid roots strongly acidify the soil to mobilize P, which also chemically reduces Fe+3 to plant‐available Fe+2. The increased supply of Fe+2 in the rhizosphere, caused by the action of proteoid roots, might tend to defeat self‐regulation of Fe uptake. It is possible that excess Fe accumulation in the plant might be regulated, in part, by exporting Fe into the leaves before they are shed. The nutrient status of B. grandis elfinwood is compared with mountain elfinwood of North America. The extreme habitat of coastal elfinwood provides many theoretical pathways for nutrient limitation, but B. grandis elfinwood at Cape Leeuwin does not appear to be nutrient deficient.  相似文献

Different strategies, known as crop biofortification, can be used to increase micronutrient concentrations in harvested parts to reduce nutrient deficiencies in the human diet. Apart from fertilization and genetic selection, a more environmentally friendly, less expensive, and more immediate solution could rely on the use of biostimulants derived from natural materials. Two biostimulants, AZAL5 and HA7, which are derived from seaweed and black peat, respectively, have been previously described as promoting growth of Brassica napus and having a substantial effect on gene expression. They were further studied to evaluate their effects on N and S and a wide range of other nutrients (that is, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Na, Mn, B, Si, Cu, and Zn). Providing these two biostimulants in the nutrient solution did not change the mineral supply significantly, but they mostly stimulated root growth and macronutrient uptake (N, S, K, and P) at a level similar to growth. Both biostimulants also stimulate chloroplast division. More surprisingly, they also increased Mg, Mn, Na, and Cu plant concentrations and root-to-shoot translocation of Fe and Zn. These observations were associated with an increased expression of a Cu transporter (COPT2) and NRAMP3, a gene putatively involved in Fe and Zn translocation. Overall, this study showed that specific nutrient balance and transport were stimulated by both biostimulants more significantly than growth, offering new perspectives for biofortification strategies.  相似文献

Summary The influence of community and edaphic variables on tissue nutrient concentration was assessed for seven species on aCarex wetland in southern Quebec, Canada.Potassium and sodium tissue levels were considerably higher and Ca and Mg 35% lower than in a deciduous forest. Macronutrient concentrations decreased in the order K>N>Ca>Mg>Na>P. Micronutrient concentrations (Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu) ranged from 0.038–0.005 mg/g. This was 2–3 times less abundant than in an adjacentScirpus wetland. Inter-species coefficient of variation in N, P and K was low (14%) compared to variation in Ca, Mg, and the micronutrients (35%).Principal components analysis of interrelations between tissue elements indicated a clear distinction between N, P, K, Cu, Mn, and Zn levels and ash, Ca, Mg, Na, and Fe levels on the first component. This difference related closely to water depth and fire incidence. The coincidence of burning with water depth and the period of maximum snowmelt and runoff in the Spring suggested the loss of N, P, K, Cu, Mn and Zn by volotilization, runoff, or leaching.Stem density was the most important parameter influencing tissue N, P, and K concentrations whereas soil nitrogen levels were important in ash, Ca, and Mg concentrations. Water depth was the most important variable in the case of Cu, Fe, Mn, Na and Zn levels. Typha angustifolia had the highest level of total nutrients in green tissue,Carex lanuginosa the lowest. Principal components analysis indicated soil nitrogen, water depth, and soil potassium levels, in that order, were the three most important variables influencing the patterns of tissue element variation among species.Potassium and sodium levels in 1-year old litter were 11% and 0.4% compared to concentrations in green tissue. Iron and manganese, both subject to oxidation and adsorption to litter at the soil surface, were distinctly higher (2247% and 199%) in litter than green tissue. Concentrations of these and other elements in litter were consistent with results reported in literature and indicated litter was especially active as a site of cation exchange in the system.

Summary twenty seven field experiments were conducted to determine if there were differences between five barley cultivars in their ability to utilize soil nutrients. There were significant differences among cultivars in yield of grain and in concentration of all macro and micro nutrients examined in both the whole plant and grain.Gateway ranked the highest for the concentration of Na, Mn, and Cu in the whole plant and was among the cultivars with highest concentration of Ca, Fe, and Zn. Centennial had generally the lowest concentration of all the nutrients determined in the whole plant. For the concentrations of Na, Mg, and Cu in grain Gateway ranked highest, but ranked third for the concentrations of K, Ca, Fe, Mn, and Zn in grain. Galt had the highest K and Mg concentration and lowest Mn, Cu and Zn concentration in grain. Except for K concentration in grain, Centennial had the lowest concentrations of all other cationic nutrients in grain.Yield of grain rather than nutrient concentration was the most important criteria in determining the ranking of nutrient yields per hectare. Because of its high grain yield, Bonanza produced the largest yield of micronutrient cations and was second to Galt in production of macronutrient cations, although it was lowest in macronutrient cation concentration. Similarly, Bonanza and Galt had the lowest protein concentration, but produced the highest yield of protein per hectare. The implications for animal nutrition of different levels of nutrients between cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Slash pine seedlings on Bladen, Leon, and Lakeland soils responded differently to P and N fertilization. Seedling growth was increased by all treatments on Bladen soil, whereas responses by seedlings on the other soils were nil. All soils were low in extractable P with both Bladen and Lakeland yielding 0.85 ppm P. Growth response to fertilizer was positive on Bladen soil because soil and tissue levels of P were raised above “critical” levels and other nutrients were present in adequate quantities. Tissue analyses indicated, and subsequent experiments utilizing macro- and micronutrients proved, that excess P applications reduced certain micronutrients to growth-limiting levels on both Leon and Lakeland soils. Best growth on Leon soil occurred when P and N were supplemented with Cu. On the Lakeland soil macronutrients supplemented with Cu, Mn, or Zn produced greatest growth. Toxicity levels of five micronutrients on the latter soil also were determined. Journal Series No. 3506, Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, Gainesville. In this study, the effect of irrigation with raw or diluted municipal sewage effluent accompanied by foliar micronutrient fertilizer sprays was examined on the growth, dry matter accumulation, grain yield, and mineral nutrients in foxtail millet plants. The experimental design was a split plot with three irrigation sources: raw sewage, 50% diluted sewage, and well water comprising the main treatments, and four combinations of Mn and Zn foliar sprays as sub-treatments that were applied with four replications. The experiment was conducted in 2009 at the Zabol University research farm in Zabol, south Iran. The applied municipal sewage effluent contained higher levels of micronutrients and macronutrients and exhibited greater degrees of electrical conductivity compared to well water. Because of the small scale of industrial activities in Zabol, the amount of heavy metals in the sewage was negligible (below the limits set for irrigation water in agricultural lands); these contaminants would not be severely detrimental to crop growth. The experimental results indicated that irrigation of plants with raw or diluted sewage stimulates the measured growth and productivity parameters of foxtail millet plants. The concentrations of micronutrients and macronutrients were also positively affected. These stimulations were attributed to the presence of high levels of such essential nutrients as N, P, and organic matter in wastewater. Supplied in sewage water alone, Mn and Zn were not able to raise the productivity of millet to the level obtained using fertilizers at the recommended values; this by itself indicated that additional nutrients from fertilizers are required to obtain higher levels of millet productivity with sewage farming. Despite the differences in nutrient concentrations among the different irrigation water sources, the micronutrient foliar sprays did not affect the concentrations of micronutrients and macronutrients in foxtail millet plants. These results suggested that municipal sewage effluent could be utilized efficiently as an important source of water, and that the nutrients used in growing foxtail millet with sewage water irrigation did not have any significant harmful effect on crop productivity. In contrast, the nutrients proved beneficial to soil fertility and millet productivity and quality.  相似文献

The canonical factors typically thought to determine herbivore community structure often explain only a small fraction of the variation in herbivore abundance and diversity. We tested how macronutrients and relatively understudied micronutrients interacted to influence the structure of insect herbivore (orthopteran) communities. We conducted a factorial fertilisation experiment manipulating macronutrients (N and P, added together) and micronutrients (Ca, Na and K) in large plots (30 × 30 m2) in a Texas coastal prairie. Although no single or combination of micronutrients affected herbivore communities in the absence of additional macronutrients, macronutrients and sodium added together increased herbivore abundance by 60%, richness by 15% and diversity by 20%. These results represent the first large‐scale manipulation of single micronutrients and macronutrients in concert, and revealed an herbivore community co‐limited by macronutrients and Na. Our work supports an emerging paradigm that Na may be important in limiting herbivore communities.  相似文献

The importance of rock-derived mineral nutrients (P, K, Mn, Mg, and Ca) in plant physiological function is well established. However, one important and relatively unexplored question is whether or not the same rules of plant nutrient use efficiency apply to these essential elements even if they are not limiting to primary production. We examined conifer growth and nutrient use dynamics across sites with contrasting geologies (sedimentary and volcanic) that vary in both rock-derived mineral nutrient and N availability. Differences in bedrock geochemistry generally corresponded to differences in available soil nutrients, such that the volcanic site tended to have greater available nutrients. Foliar nutrient concentrations reflected both differences in bedrock chemistry and indices of available soil nutrients for P, K, and Mn. Aboveground biomass production did not follow expected patterns and was greater for trees growing on low nutrient sites, but only with respect to the annual woody increment. Fine litter production did not differ between sites. Finally, we found evidence for trade-offs between two commonly examined components of nutrient use efficiency (NUE): nutrient productivity (A n) and mean residence time of nutrients. However, we did not find evidence for higher plant NUE in soils with lower nutrient availability for N or rock-derived nutrients.  相似文献

Impacts of municipal effluent (ME) irrigation on soil physicochemical properties and its remediation by tree species were assessed with a view to utilize this resource in growing woodlot, controlling land degradation and improving environmental quality in suburban areas. Acacia nilotica L. (babool), Dalbergia sissoo L. (sissoo) and Eucalyptus camaldulensis seedlings planted in July 1998 were irrigated with ME at ½ PET (T2), 1 PET (T3), 2 PET (T4), and with canal water at 1 PET (T5). The control was soil without seedlings irrigated with ME at 1 PET (T1). Application of ME increased minerals concentration from T2 to T4 in both soil and seedling in June 1999 and 2000. The increase in soil pH, EC, SOC was by <2.00-fold and availability of potassium (K), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) by >2-fold, NH4–N by 10.44-fold and PO4–P by 6.57-fold in T4 than those in T5 treatment in 2000. Available NH4–N, PO4–P, Mg and K were higher in 0–15 cm soil layer but continued irrigation and low soil carbon influenced leaching of NO3–N, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn resulting their higher concentrations in 60–90 cm soil layer (P < 0.01). Lower soil nutrients in T3 than in T1 suggested soil amelioration by the planted seedlings and because of lowest concentration of most of the nutrients E. camaldlensis showed highest soil amelioration capacity. But nutrient utilization efficiency was highest in A. nilotica for K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and Zn, D. sissoo for N and P, and E. camaldulensis for Mn. Thus, planting tree seedlings, particularly E. camaldulensis, under ecological amelioration could in this way help in controlling land degradation and enhancing biomass and aesthetic benefits, although long-term application of effluent would lead to mineral/salt accumulation in soil and plants.  相似文献

Increased nutrient availability can have a large impact in Australian woodland ecosystems, many of which are very poor in nutrients, particularly phosphorus. A study was conducted in an urban Banksia woodland remnant in Perth, southwest Western Australia to test the hypothesis that the soil nutrient status in areas in good condition (GC), poor condition invaded by the perennial grass Ehrharta calycina (PCe), and poor condition invaded by the perennial herb Pelargonium capitatum (PCp), is reflected in the nutrient status of the native and introduced species. Leaf concentrations of P, K, N, Na, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn of six native (Banksia attenuata, Banksia menziesii, Allocasuarina humilis, Melaleuca systena, Macrozamia fraseri and Conostylis aculeata) and four introduced species (Ehrharta calycina, Pelargonium capitatum, Gladiolus caryophyllaceus and Briza maxima), were measured. Soil pH, electrical conductivity, N (total), P (total), available P, K, S and organic C were assessed beneath all species on all sites. Significantly higher concentrations of soil P (total) and P (HCO3) were found at PCe and PCp sites than GC sites, while PCp sites also had significantly higher soil concentrations for N (total) and S. Principal Components Analysis of the leaf analyses showed (a) individual species have characteristically different nutrient concentrations; (b) the introduced species Ehrharta calycina and Pelargonium capitatum clustered separately from each other and by vegetation condition. Leaf concentrations of P were significantly (P<0.05) higher, and K and Cu were significantly lower in PCe and PCp sites compared with those at GC sites. Introduced species leaf nutrient concentrations were significantly greater than native species for all nutrients except Mn which was significantly lower, with no differences for Mg and B. The results indicate a key role for P in the Banksia woodland, and we conclude that higher levels of available P at invaded sites are having a detrimental impact on the ecosystem. These results provide new knowledge to enhance conservation practices for the management of the key threatening process of invasion within a biodiversity hot spot. Section Editor: T. Low soybean yields in western Kenya have been attributed to low soil fertility despite much work done on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrition leading to suspicion of other nutrient limitations. To investigate this, a nutrient omission trial was set up in the greenhouse at the University of Eldoret-Kenya to diagnose the nutrients limiting soybean production in Acrisols from Masaba central and Butere sub-Counties, and Ferralsols from Kakamega (Shikhulu and Khwisero sub-locations) and Butula sub-Counties and to assess the effect of liming on soil pH and soybean growth. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with ten treatments viz; positive control (complete), negative control (distilled water), complete with lime, complete with N, minus macronutrients P, potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S) and with, micro-nutrients boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) omitted. Visual deficiency symptoms observed included interveinal leaf yellowing in Mg omission and N addition and dark green leaves in P omission. Nutrients omission resulted in their significantly low concentration in plant tissues than the complete treatment. Significantly (P≤ 0.05) lower shoot dry weights (SDWs) than the complete treatment were obtained in different treatments; omission of K and Mg in Masaba and Shikhulu, Mg in Khwisero, K in Butere and, P, Mg and K in Butula. Nitrogen significantly improved SDWs in soils from Kakamega and Butula. Liming significantly raised soil pH by 9, 13 and 11% from 4.65, 4.91 and 4.99 in soils from Masaba, Butere and Butula respectively and soybean SDWs in soils from Butere. The results show that, poor soybean growth was due to K, Mg and P limitation and low pH in some soils. The results also signify necessity of application of small quantities of N for initial soybean use.  相似文献
