Epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection in the Czech Republic   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
BACKGROUND: Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection has been estimated to range from 60 to 95% in the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of this study was to evaluate H. pylori infection prevalence in a representative sample of the Czech population. The second objective was to describe difference of H. pylori prevalence between different social groups of children and adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2509 persons aged 5-100 years, randomly selected out of 30,012 persons of the general population, took part in the study. H. pylori infection was investigated by means of 13C-urea breath test. Breath samples were analyzed by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Social and demographic characteristics were based on data from self-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: Using the total Czech population as a standard, we estimated the age-standardized prevalence of H. pylori in males aged 5+ years at 41.9% (95% CI 39.0%, 44.8%) and in females aged 5+ years at 41.4% (95% CI 38.6%, 44.3%) in 2001. Prevalence of H. pylori increased with age but was not related to gender. Children of mothers with basic or lower education, living in crowded accommodations, without access to running warm water, and residing in smaller towns appear to be at the highest risk. Low education and heavy smoking are most strongly associated with prevalence of H. pylori positivity in adults and adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: This is a unique study based on a representative sample of the general population in a Central European country. The overall prevalence of H. pylori is lower than previously assumed and could partly reflect a substantial recent decrease in H. pylori prevalence in the Czech Republic. Consistent with earlier studies, H. pylori infection is strongly influenced by socioeconomic conditions and childhood poverty.  相似文献

Mortality and displaced mortality during heat waves in the Czech Republic   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aims of this study were to assess impacts of hot summer periods on mortality in the Czech Republic and to quantify the size of the short-term displacement effect which resulted in lower than expected mortality after heat waves. The analysis covered the period 1982–2000 when several extraordinarily hot summers occurred in central Europe. Daily total all-cause mortality and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the entire population of the Czech Republic (approximately 10 million inhabitants) were examined. The daily death counts were standardized to account for the long-term decline in mortality and the seasonal and weekly cycles. Heat-related mortality is better expressed if 1-day lag after temperature is considered compared to the unlagged relationship. With the 1-day lag, both excess total mortality and excess CVD mortality were positive during all 17 heat waves, and in 14 (12) heat waves the increase in total (CVD) mortality was statistically significant (P=0.05). The mean relative rise in total mortality during heat waves was 13%. The response was greater in females than males and similar regardless of whether total or CVD mortality was used. The largest relative increases, exceeding 20% in both total and CVD mortality, were associated with heat waves which occurred in early summer (the first half of July 1984 and June 1994). The mortality displacement effect played an important role since mortality tended to be lower than expected after hot periods. The mean net mortality change due to heat waves was estimated to be about a 1% increase in the number of deaths. The large relative increases during some heat waves were particularly noteworthy since the study (in contrast to most analyses of the heat stress/mortality relationship) was not restricted to an urban area and/or an elderly population.  相似文献

The paper analyses an unintentional experiment conducted 40 years ago with species termed wool aliens which were observed in employee garden allotments of a wool-processing factory in Brno, Czech Republic. The waste from processing was used as a garden fertilizer, and alien species were recorded by Dvořák and Kühn (1966) Zavlečené rostliny na pozemcích přádelny vlny ‘Mosilana’ n.p. v Brně. Preslia 38: 327–332. The survival of these species was assessed by their occurrence in the current alien flora of the Czech Republic. Of the 56 species introduced in the 1960s and classified as wool aliens, 18 are still present in the Czech alien flora. The remaining 38 species are considered extinct, i.e. alien plants not capable of long-term survival in the country. The resulting survival rate of wool aliens is 22.1%. Three species on the list (5.4%) were clearly capable of naturalization. Compared to the other alien flora of the Czech Republic, wool aliens were disproportionally introduced from Australia, Africa and South and Central America. Species from Europe and Africa tended to survive the best. Grasses were most strongly represented, contributing 62.5% to wool alien species but only 7.9% to the total Czech neophyte flora. All surviving species were annuals, whereas none of the perennials survived; the survival rate in annuals was 37.5%. Survival of species introduced with wool was significantly comparable to their performance in the UK and in Central Europe, indicating that survival is not determined by mere chance and that the same species tend to be successful elsewhere in Europe. Maximum height and the month of first flowering were not significantly related to the species survival. The role of specific events in the enrichment of alien floras is discussed.  相似文献

Imperfectly preserved specimen of a supposed hydrozoan Medusites cf. radiatus Linnars., originally described by Pompeckj (1896 Pompeckj, J. F. 1896. Die Fauna des Kambriums von Tej?ovic und Skrej in Böhmen. Jahrbuch der Keiserlichen-königlichen geologischen Reichanstalt, 45:495615. [Google Scholar]) from the “Pod trním” locality near Tý?ovice (Slapnice Member of the Buchava Formation, Skryje–Tý?ovice Basin) is revised. Recent study of the original specimen and a more complete topotype specimen testify the affiliation to the pineapple-shaped ichnogenus Astropolichnus Crimes and Anderson, 1985. A new ichnospecies A. bohemicus is established on the material from the Buchava Formation. This material is the first occurrence of Astropolichnus in the middle Cambrian as well as the first report of this ichnogenus in the Barrandian area of Czech Republic.  相似文献

During a survey of mosquitoes in the South Moravian lowland area, the mosquito Anopheles hyrcanus (Pallas) (Diptera: Culicidae) was found breeding in an ancient fishpond (Nesyt). It is not clear whether this southern Palaearctic species, a known vector of malaria in Asia which has not been recorded in the Czech Republic until this year, has gone undetected in the past or whether it has recently moved into the region as a result of climate change.  相似文献

During the years 1999–2002, a total of 4,898 individuals of 26 species of hematophagous insects (4,149 mosquitoes, 583 black flies, and 166 tabanid flies) was examined for the presence of spirochetes using dark‐field microscopy. There was an overall recovery of spirochetes from the midguts of Culicidae and Simuliidae of 23.5% and 11.4%, respectively. Spirochetes were not detected in Tabanidae. Seven spirochetal strains have been successfully recovered from mosquitoes and black flies: BR149 (Culex pipiens), BR151 (Cx. pipiens), BR173 (Cx. pipiens), BR177 (Cx. pipiens), BR193 (Aedes cinereus), BR208 (Cx. pipiens), and BR231 (Simulium noelleri). The strains have been adapted to laboratory conditions (BSK‐H Complete medium). Their preliminary determination based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing has shown that they differ from the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato as well as other members of the Order Spirochaetales indicating novel bacterial species in the Family Spirochaetaceae.  相似文献

Changes in weed species richness and beta-diversity are partly attributable to different types and intensity of disturbance and partly to broad-scale variation in environmental conditions. We compiled a data set of 434 vegetation plots of weed vegetation in root crop and cereal fields in Moravia (eastern Czech Republic) to compare the effects of environmental conditions and different disturbance regimes on species richness and beta-diversity. To detect changes in species richness, we related the variation in species richness to individual environmental conditions. To assess differences in beta-diversity between the vegetation of cereal and root crop fields, we used Whittaker's measure of beta-diversity. The relative importance of each environmental variable for the variation in species composition was evaluated using canonical correspondence analysis. All analyses were done for all vascular plant species and separately for native species, archaeophytes and neophytes. A comparison of weed vegetation of root crops and cereals showed a distinct dichotomy between these two types of weed vegetation. There was no significant difference in total species richness and native species richness; however, cereal fields were richer in archaeophytes and root crop fields were richer in neophytes. The beta-diversity of weed vegetation was higher in root crops. Environmental factors explained a significant part of the variability in richness of both natives and aliens. The richness of native species increased and beta-diversity decreased with increasing precipitation. The opposite relationship was found for archaeophytes, in both cereals and root crops. These results confirmed the importance of climatic factors and management practices for changes in weed species composition. They also showed a distinct pattern of species richness and beta-diversity of native and alien weed species.  相似文献

Cucurbit downy mildew, caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a major cucumber disease in the Czech Republic. Disease prevalence, host range and disease severity were evaluated from 2001 to 2009. The geographical distribution of P. cubensis was assessed on ca 80–100 locations per year in two main regions of the Czech Republic (central and southern Moravia, and eastern, northern and central Bohemia). Infection by P. cubensis was observed primarily on cucumber (Cucumis sativus) but only on the leaves. During the study, disease prevalence ranged from 66 to 100%. The majority of C. sativus crops were heavily infected at the end of the growing season (second half of August). Generally, P. cubensis was present at high or very high disease severity. The loss of foliage results in the reduction in the quality and quantity of marketable yield of fruit. Pseudoperonospora cubensis was widespread across the whole area of the Czech Republic studied. Very rarely, infection was recorded in muskmelon (Cucumis melo) and Cucurbita moschata. Of other pathogens, the most frequently recorded was the cucurbit powdery mildew (Golovinomyces cichoracearum and Podosphaera xanthii).  相似文献

Modifications of social, political, cultural, nutritional and behavioral factors in the Czech Republic during the nineties were not homogeneous, and/or of the same rate and character; however, the effect on child population was manifested. In all former socialist countries social contrasts have increased along with the modifications of the availability of the foodstuffs and changes in food preferences and aversions. In this respect, new commercials and advertising play an important role. Modifications of spontaneous food selection have effects on the development of children, which is already apparent in early age. Body Mass Index of Czech children, which used to be higher than that of Western Europe, has not change since the end of the eighties, and is now nearly identical to them. Prevalence of serious obesity in children, its treatment and prevention has become a more urgent health problem. The level of physical fitness in Czech children on the average tends to decrease, and is more divergent and its lower level in normal hypo-kinetic youth contrasts with small groups of growing subjects involved in certain sport disciplines in which training starts early (e.g. gymnastics, tennis, figure skating etc.).  相似文献

Changes in the ichthyocenosis of five smaller streams of 2nd to 4th order existing in the spring section of the River Odra (Oder) catchment area, in the territory of the Czech Republic, were observed before and after the catastrophic floods of July 1997. Quantitative catches using electro-fishing were performed in June, August, and September 1997, i.e. a month before and 2 months after the floods. The maximum flow of water in the examined sites usually reached or exceeded the limit of the so-called ȁ8once in a century high waterȁ9. Extreme floods did not influence statistically the proven average readings of species diversity of ichthyocenosis in the examined sites (p = 0.5625), species variety (p = 0.7316), abundance per hectare (p = 0.3125), and biomass per hectare (p = 0.4375). A distinctive decline in abundance and also in the biomass of the ichthyocenosis took place in geomorphic reaches. Significant incisions and alterations in the routes of the streams were also observed. Statistical data of catches of key reophilous fish species from the River Oder catchment basin, all of which were affected by the floods, in the periods 1995–1996, 1997, and 1998–1999, were evaluated. Catches of the species of Salmo trutta and Thymallus thymallus in 1997 considerably increased. Only Thymallus thymallus experienced a more pronounced decrease in the years after the floods, when compared with the average readings made in the period 1995–1996. The readings of the adult abundance of Barbus barbus and Chondrostoma nasus did not prove a negative impact of the floods on the adult population of both species in the assessed years. Our findings suggest that the original fish communities may be naturally well adapted to culmination flows.  相似文献

In this article, a methodological approach to the topic of the racial discrimination of Roma people in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and the Russian Federation draws on three models of modus vivendi between Roma people and the majority, including the concepts and forms of direct and indirect discrimination. The core methodology employed in this article is the legal and sociological analysis of various national and international statistics as well as practices of the courts, which are focused upon throughout. The fieldwork within this article deals with the various attitudes of Roma parents to the introduction of Roma assistants in primary schools in the Czech Republic and is enriched with in-depth interviews conducted with Roma teaching assistants. Data from original research in three Czech elementary schools are compared with forms of discrimination in Bulgaria and in the Russian Federation regarding their educational systems.  相似文献

The paper presents and evaluates the results of macroscopic and pollen analyses of a buried organic layer at the confluence of the Svitava and Svratka rivers on the southern margin of the Brno City, southern Moravia, Czech Republic. The layer was covered with about 4 m of flood-loams and dates to ca. A.D. 1100. Remains of nearly 100 vascular plants and about 40 mosses contribute to the knowledge of the medieval flora, vegetation and environment in the vicinity of Brno as continuous settlement began in the city area and as the upstream landscapes were colonised.  相似文献

Summary The deep-red lenses of the Pragian Slivenec Limestone have been extensively quarried for ornamental purposes since the XIIth century. Petrographic microscope observations indicate that the hematite stainings of the limestone follow ten different patterns. They range from massive non-directional filling of cavities to mineralized films and microstromatolites. Numerous ironrich endolithes are observed. Some could be derived from bacterial or lichen perforations and some related to ferric bacteria. Infiltration along welded calcite crystals, regular mineralized films and microstromatolites suggest a ferric bacterial origin for the pigment. This is confirmed by scanning microscope examinations of polished sections, that show hematite concentrations along micrometric filamentous sheaths.  相似文献

Background:  Acquisition of Helicobacter pylori occurs mainly in childhood and is significantly influenced by geographical variations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in a population-based sample of asymptomatic children in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, this study aims to identify potential risk factors associated with this infection.
Materials and Methods:  A prospective, cross-sectional, population-based study was undertaken in 1545 asymptomatic Czech children (aged 0–15 years; male 49.3%). Active H. pylori infection was diagnosed by monoclonal antibody-based antigen-in-stool enzyme immunoassay. Socio-demographic details of each subject were analyzed using a self-administered standardized questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis was performed.
Results:  Overall, 7.1% of asymptomatic children were diagnosed with H. pylori infection. Of the infected children, 5.8% lived in the general population. A positive association was found with increasing age, although not with gender. Independent risk factors associated with H. pylori infection in our pediatric population were: the number of children in a household (odds ratio [OR] 4.26; confidence interval [CI] 1.91–9.80); lack of formal education of fathers (OR 0.23; CI 0.18–0.64) and institutionalized children (OR 6.33; CI 2.25–26.50).
Conclusions:  This study of a large cohort of children demonstrated that, independent of gender, H. pylori infection in the Czech Republic is among the lowest reported in Europe. Socioeconomically disadvantaged children, unfortunately, are still at risk of harboring this potentially preventable infection in this low-prevalence region.  相似文献

Aim To assess whether altitude changes in the distribution of butterflies during the second half of the 20th century are consistent with climate warming scenarios. Location The Czech Republic. Methods Distributional data were taken from a recent butterfly distribution atlas, which maps all Czech butterflies using a grid of 10′ longitude to 6′ latitude, equivalent to about 11.1 × 12 km. Cell altitude was used as an independent variable, and altitudinal ranges of individual species (less migrants, extinct species, recent arrivals and extremely rare species) in 1950–80 vs. 1995–2001 and in 1950–80, 1981–94, 1995–2001 were compared using U‐tests and linear regressions. Results Of 117 (U‐tests) and 119 (regressions) species, we found significant uphill increases in 15 and 12 species, respectively. The two groups were nested; none (U‐test) and one (regression) species showed a significant altitudinal decrease. Binomial tests of frequencies of signs of the U‐tests and regression coefficients, including nonsignificant ones, also showed that the increases prevailed. The mean and median of the significant shifts were 60 and 90 m, respectively, and the maximum shift per species was 148 m. The recording effort in individual time periods was not biased with respect to altitude. Main conclusion Altitude shifts in the distribution of Czech butterflies are already detectable on the coarse scales of standard distribution maps. The increasing species do not show any consistent pattern in habitat affiliations, conservation status and mountain vs. nonmountain distribution, which renders climatic explanation as the most likely cause of the distributional shifts.  相似文献

The seasonal flight activity of Platycerus caprea was studied at two sites in the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts in 2002–2004 using bark beetle pheromone traps of Theysohn® type. Platycerus caprea occurred at altitudes of 400 m up to 1200 m a.s.l. Seasonal flight activity in both males and females started at the beginning of May and continued until mid-June. At lower altitudes (up to ca 900 m a.s.l.), adults flew in the first half of May, at altitudes about 1000 m a.s.l. in the second half of May and in the highest sites more than 1200 m a.s.l. in the first half of June.  相似文献

The Ahníkov (Miocene, Czech Republic) site represents a concentration of vertebrate skeletal remains in a swamp setting. Autochthonous bone deposits were strongly altered by sedimentary processes and early diagenesis. Biting and gnawing traces recognized on hard animal tissues (bones, teeth, antlers, turtle thoraces) represent seven recurring morphotypes. The following ichnotaxa are erected: Nihilichnus nihilicus n. igen. et n. isp., Nihilichnus mortalis n. isp., Machichnus regularis n. igen. et n. isp., Machichnus multilineatus n. isp., Machichnus bohemicus n. isp., and Brutalichnus brutalis n. igen. et n. isp. Each kind of bones or similar substrates bears a specific proportion of various bite traces but no observed morphotype is specific for a single substrate. Ethologically, traces of sharpening of teeth are principally different from predation traces. The beavers Steneofiber eseri and Steneofiber depereti, the carnivore Amphicyon sp. and the crocodiles are presumed as the tracemakers.  相似文献

The earliest pterygote (winged insect), dated from the Lower Carboniferous (Namurian A/E1, circa 324 millions years ago) is described from the Upper Silesian Basin in the Czech Republic. On the basis of its wing venation, it is attributed to the Archaeorthoptera Béthoux and Nel, 2002, crown group of the “Orthoptera”. Besides Apterygota (Collembola and Archaeognatha) known from the Lower Devonian, extremely rare pterygote insects are known from Lower Carboniferous deposits when they first appeared. The present discovery supports the hypothesis of the presence of the ancestor lineage of the orthopteroid in the Lower Carboniferous ecosystems.  相似文献

Wetlands have been intensively studied in the Czech Republic for more than 30 years, but the first full-scale constructed wetland (CW) for wastewater treatment was built in the Czech Republic in 1989. By the end of 1999, about 100 CWs were put in operation. The majority of the systems are horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) CWs and are designed for the secondary treatment of domestic or municipal wastewater. The size of CWs ranges between 18 and 4500 m2 and between 4 and 1100 population equivalent (PE). Most frequently used filtration media are gravel and crushed rock with size fractions of 4/8 and 8/16 mm and Phragmites australis is the most commonly used plant. The treatment efficiency is high in terms of BOD5 (88.0% for vegetated beds) and suspended solids (84.3% for vegetated beds). The removal of nutrients is lower for vegetated beds, and averages 51 and 41.6% for total phosphorus and total nitrogen, respectively.  相似文献

A recent broad comparative study suggested that factors during egg formation – in particular ‘flight efficiency’, which explained only 4% of the interspecific variation – are the main forces of selection on the evolution of egg shape in birds. As an alternative, we tested whether selection during the incubation period might also influence egg shape in two taxa with a wide range of egg shapes, the alcids (Alcidae) and the penguins (Spheniscidae). To do this, we analysed data from 30 species of these two distantly related but ecologically similar bird families with egg shapes ranging from nearly spherical to the most pyriform eggs found in birds. The shape of pyriform eggs, in particular, has previously proven difficult to quantify. Using three egg‐shape indices – pointedness, polar‐asymmetry and elongation – that accurately describe the shapes of all birds’ eggs, we examined the effects of egg size, chick developmental mode, clutch size and incubation site on egg shape. Linear models that include only these factors explained 70–85% of the variation in these egg‐shape indices, with incubation site consistently explaining > 60% of the variation in shape. The five species of alcids and penguins that produce the most pyriform eggs all incubate in an upright posture on flat or sloping substrates, whereas species that incubate in a cup nest have more spherical eggs. We suggest that breeding sites and incubation posture influence the ability of parents to manipulate egg position, and thus selection acting during incubation may influence egg‐shape variation across birds as a whole.  相似文献
