A detailed investigation into light, temperature and flow regimes of the Vaal River was done for the first time. The Vaal River is ecologically and economically one of the most important rivers in South Africa. In a South African context, the Vaal River, with an average Secchi disk depth (Z sd) of 0.41 m and an average euphotic zone depth (Z eu) of 1.3 m, is a moderately turbid system. Red light (approx. 670 nm) penetrated Vaal River water to a greater degree than other components of the light spectrum. Water temperature in the Vaal River (min. = 10, max. = 27 °C at midday), closely followed seasonal changes in average atmospheric temperatures. The water-column shows little temperature stratification. The Vaal River is a highly regulated system with relatively high discharge rates at Balkfontein (average 112 m3 s–1), but relatively low current velocity (approx. 0.35 m s–1). Discharge was the most important variable to influence transparency of Vaal River water. Higher discharge resulted in higher total suspended solids (TSS) concentration and higher extinction coefficient (k) values as well as in higher turbidity and thus in lower Z eu and Z sd. From the mean TSS (141 mg l–1) it was calculated that the Vaal River (mean annual run-off of 3532 million m3) transported 498016 tonnes of suspended solids per annum.  相似文献

为探究黄河三角洲湿地柽柳灌丛下土壤的盐渍化特征,在黄河三角洲国家级自然保护区(37°35''-12''N,118°33''-119°20''E)黄河入海口附近,根据长势基本一致的原则分别在碱蓬群落、柽柳群落和芦苇群落各选3株柽柳,采集柽柳灌丛下土壤样品,分析土壤盐分和盐碱化参数的空间分布以及距基茎不同距离处研究对象(土壤总盐(TS)、电导率(EC)、pH、交换性钠百分率(ESP))和环境因子(Na+、K+、Ca2+、Mg2+、Cl-、HCO3-、SO2-4)之间的关系。结果表明:(1)研究区土壤为弱碱化盐土,离子含量由高到低依次为Cl->Na+>SO2-4 >Ca2+>Mg2+>HCO-3>K+。除pH在土壤表层数值最低外,表层土壤TS、EC、ESP和盐分离子大于深层土壤,显示表聚性。(2)土壤盐分和盐碱化参数空间分布总体为:在柽柳基茎周围形成"盐谷"、"碱谷"效应, Na+、Mg2+、Cl-表现为"盐谷",K+ 、SO2-4 、Ca2+ 表现为"盐岛"。(3)在整个土壤剖面中,与TS、EC相关性最强的阴阳离子为Mg2+、Cl-,从灌丛中心到灌丛间裸地Ca2+、SO2-4与TS、EC的相关性逐渐减弱,Mg2+、Cl-与TS、EC的相关性逐渐增强。Ca2+和SO2-4与pH表现为较强的负相关性;与ESP相关性最强的阴离子为HCO-3,与之相关性最强的阳离子为Na+和K+,并且Na+和K+与ESP的相关性表现出从灌丛中心向外逐渐增强。(4)土壤盐渍化主要受控于Na+,从灌丛下到灌丛间裸地Cl-对盐渍化程度的影响逐渐增加,SO2-4的影响逐渐降低。  相似文献

Most Ethiopian lakes are parts of closed drainage systems and collectively form an extensive salinity series, here treated comparatively for geographical, chemical and algal characteristics. Chemical data are presented for 28 lakes and numerous inflows, including original analyses for 15 lakes, in which total ionic concentration and electrical conductivity vary over 4 orders of magnitude. The principal determinant of a lake's position in the series is the open or closed nature of its individual drainage. At present there are three major closed systems (Awash R. — Afar drainage, northern rift lakes, southern rift lakes), numerous crater lakes with seepage -in and -out, and two cryptodepressions with marine inputs. Salinity is primarily determined by evaporative concentration, enhanced in lakes associated with past marine influence or recent volcanic activity by readily soluble materials in the catchment, and by some thermal-reflux pathways. However, anomalously dilute closed lakes exist, indicative of other processes of solute loss (e.g. past basin overflow, reverse weathering, seepage-out).There are strong positive correlations between increasing salinity and the concentrations of Na+, alkalinity and Cl-. The last is used, in conjunction with other analyses of atmospheric precipitation, to estimate the marine and denudative contributions and the evaporative concentration factor, and to distinguish trends of ionic species during evaporative concentration. With several exceptions, affected by past penetration of sea water into the Danakil and L. Assal cryptodepressions, the most saline lakes are soda lakes with HCO3 - + CO inf3 sup2- and Na+ predominant and Ca2+ and Mg2+ largely eliminated. Soluble reactive silicate and phosphate tend to increase in concentration along the salinity series, but the unknown dynamics of algal growth are likely to introduce variance. Concentrations in some lakes are extremely high, e.g. > 40 mg SiO2 l-1 and > 1 mg PO4-P l-1.Phytoplankters recorded from individual lakes are tabulated and where available the community biomass concentration as chlorophyll a is given. Lakes of high salinity-alkalinity are typically very productive in terms of phytoplankton biomass and photosynthetic rates (exceptions: the very deep L. Shala and the very saline L. Abhe), supported in part by relatively high concentrations of phosphorus and inorganic carbon. Many species are of restricted salinity-alkalinity range, being characteristic of waters where levels are low (e.g. desmids, Melosira spp.), intermediate (e.g. Planctonema lauterborni), or high (e.g. Spirulina platensis). Phytoflagellates are most strongly represented in waters with higher concentrations of the bivalent cations Ca2+ and Mg2+. The common cyanophyte Microcystis aeruginosa can tolerate a wide salinity range, here as elsewhere.  相似文献

An unusual saltwater population of the freshwater crocodilian, Crocodylus johnstoni, was studied in the estuary of the Limmen Bight River in Australia's Northern Territory and compared with populations in permanently freshwater habitats. Crocodiles in the river were found across a large salinity gradient, from fresh water to a salinity of 24 mg · ml-1, more than twice the body fluid concentration. Plasma osmolarity, concentrations of plasma Na+, Cl-, and K+, and exchangeable Na+ pools were all remarkably constant across the salinity spectrum and were not substantially higher or more variable than those in crocodiles from permanently freshwater habitats. Body fluid volume did not vary; condition factor and hydration status of crocodiles were not correlated with salinity and were not different from those of crocodiles from permanently fresh water. C. johnstoni clearly has considerable powers of osmoregulation in waters of low to medium salinity. Whether this osmoregulatory competence extends to continuously hyperosmotic environments is not known, but distributional data suggest that C. johnstoni in hyperosmotic conditions may require periodic access to hypoosmotic water. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, acclimated to 33% sea water (12 mg·ml-1 salinity) experienced significant (10 meq·1-1) increases in plasma [Na+] and [Cl-] within 5 h of exposure to 6.3 mol copper·1-1 indicating severe impairment of branchial ionoregulatory capacity. All plasma ion levels subsequently stabilised once the transbranchial [Na+] gradient was reduced to zero. The similar ionic strength of the external medium and their body fluids appeared to protect trout maintained in 33% sea water from further ionoregulatory stress and any secondary physiological disturbances during exposure to copper. Despite three- and fourfold greater transbranchial [Na+] and [Cl-] gradients, trout acclimated to full-strength sea water (35 mg·ml-1 salinity) suffered no major changes in plasma Na+, Cl-, K+, or Ca2+, blood gases or haematology during 24 h exposure to 6.3 mol copper·1-1. This reduction in toxicity in full strength sea water cannot be explained by differences in copper speciation. We suggest that during acute exposure to waterborne copper, active NaCl extrusion is unaffected due to the basolateral location of the gill Na+/K+-ATPase, but that ionoregulatory disturbances can occur due to gill permeability changes secondary to the displacement of surface-bound Ca2+. However, in full strength sea water the three-fold higher ambient [Ca2+] and [Mg2+] appear to be sufficient to prevent any detrimental permeability changes in the presence of 6.3 mol copper·1-1. 2015年12月—2016年10月,每月小潮日原位定期向闽江口塔礁洲淡水感潮野慈姑(Sagittaria trifolia L.)湿地施加剂量为60、120 kg S hm~(-2)a~(-1)的K_2SO_4溶液(分别记做S-60和S-120),探讨模拟硫酸根(SO_4~(2-))沉降对河口淡水感潮湿地甲烷(CH4)排放通量及间隙水SO_4~(2-)浓度的影响。对照、S-60和S-120处理组CH_4排放通量年均值分别为(7.88±1.00)mg h~(-1)m~(-2)、(6.55±0.97)mg h~(-1)m~(-2)和(6.66±1.49)mg h~(-1)m~(-2)。在年尺度上,两个高强度模拟SO_4~(2-)沉降处理组均未显著降低闽江口淡水感潮野慈姑湿地CH_4排放通量(P0.05),即高强度SO_4~(2-)沉降不会对河口淡水感潮湿地CH_4排放通量产生类似于其对泥炭湿地和水稻田的显著抑制效应。在年尺度以及秋、冬季,两个施加K_2SO_4溶液处理显著增加了野慈姑湿地10 cm深度土壤间隙水SO_4~(2-)浓度。对于各个处理组,温度较高的夏、秋季CH_4排放通量均显著高于温度相对较低的冬、春季(P0.05)。不同处理组CH_4排放通量均与土壤温度呈显著正相关关系,温度仍然是影响亚热带河口淡水感潮湿地CH_4排放通量的重要环境因子。  相似文献

Flooding an extreme alkaline-saline soil decreased alkalinity and salinity, which will change the bacterial populations. Bacterial 16S rDNA libraries were generated of three soils with different electrolytic conductivity (EC), i.e. soil with EC 1.7 dS m−1 and pH 7.80 (LOW soil), with EC 56 dS m−1 and pH 10.11 (MEDIUM soil) and with EC 159 dS m−1 and pH 10.02 (HIGH soil), using universal bacterial oligonucleotide primers, and 463 clone 16S rDNA sequences were analyzed phylogenetically. Library proportions and clone identification of the phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Cloroflexi showed that the bacterial communities were different. Species and genera of the Rhizobiales, Rhodobacterales and Xanthomonadales orders of the α- and γ-subdivision of Proteobacteria were found at the three sites. Species and genera of the Rhodospirillales, Sphingobacteriales, Clostridiales, Oscillatoriales and Caldilineales were found only in the HIGH soil, Sphingomonadales, Burkholderiales and Pseudomonadales in the MEDIUM soil, Myxococcales in the LOW soil, and Actinomycetales in the MEDIUM and LOW soils. It was found that the largest diversity at the order and species level was found in the MEDIUM soil as bacteria of both the HIGH and LOW soils were found in it.  相似文献

  • 1 Benthic‐algal distributions in the upper Illinois River basin, IL, U.S.A., were examined in relation to geology, land use, water chemistry and stream habitat using (detrended) (canonical) correspondence analysis, autecological metrics and indicator‐species analysis in order to identify the major environmental gradients influencing community variation.
  • 2 Ionic composition and major nutrient [i.e. nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)] concentration of surface waters, salinity (Na‐Cl type), substratum type and physiognomic form of dominant species were primary factors contributing to variation in benthic‐algal assemblages of the basin. Basin geology was a significant contributing factor, but the explained variance associated with this factor was less than that related to land use.
  • 3 Proportions of algal biomass consisting of cyanophytes, filamentous chlorophytes, halophilic diatoms and diatoms which utilize nitrogen heterotrophically were greater in eutrophic river segments than in less nutrient‐enriched segments. Composition of the benthic flora indicated meso‐eutrophic or eutrophic conditions throughout the basin; there were few diatoms indicative of hypertrophic waters. Shifts in diatom‐assemblage structure in response to nutrient loading provided an incomplete representation of the community‐response curve.
  • 4 A weighted‐averages regression model based on total P and benthic‐algal abundances (all divisions included) yielded a highly significant correlation (r2 = 0.83) between species‐inferred [WA(tol)] and observed total P, with systematic bias (increased deviation of residuals) occurring only at concentrations greater than ~ 1.0 mg L?1 total P. This result indicates that total P regression and calibration models can be predictable for a river basin receiving excessive loadings of phosphorus.

【目的】水产养殖过程中蜡状芽孢杆菌(Bacillus cereus)作为益生菌被广泛应用。本研究旨在深入了解分离于养殖水体中的一株蜡状芽孢杆菌S458-1对养殖水体以及养殖对象的影响,以期为菌株S458-1在水产养殖生产上的应用提供理论依据。【方法】根据控制变量法,各试验组鲫鱼养殖模式设置相同温度、盐度、溶氧和pH,利用分光光度法测定水体的水化学指标;利用试剂盒法测定鲫鱼的血清生理生化指标。【结果】添加菌株S458-1处理组(终浓度分别为10~6、10~7、10~8CFU/mL)与对照组(未加S458-1菌)相比:水体活性磷浓度显著性增加(P0.05);同时具有把NH_4~+-N和NO_2~–-N转化为NO_3~–-N的趋势,但无显著性差异(P0.05);养殖鲫鱼血清检测结果显示谷草转氨酶(GOT)、超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GSH-Px)以及丙二醛(MDA)含量均显著降低(P0.05)。【结论】蜡状芽孢杆菌S458-1具有脱氮解磷、调节水质的作用,并可增强养殖对象的生理健康状态,可作为益生菌应用于水产养殖中,具有较高的应用价值。  相似文献

Routine metabolism (i.e. standard metabolism plus a low level of activity) of coastal largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides from Mobile‐Tensaw Delta, AL, U.S.A. was examined as a function of temperature (15, 20, 25 and 30° C), salinity (0, 4, 8 and 12) and body mass (range 24–886 g) using flow‐through respirometry. Functionally, a cubic relationship best described the effect of salinity on respiration; the magnitude of these effects increased with temperature and body mass. The best model predicted that specific respiration (mg O2 g?1 h?1) at temperatures >20° C was lowest at salinities of 0·0 and 9·7, and elevated at 3·2 and 12·0; salinity had little to no effect at temperatures ≤20° C. Respiration increased exponentially with temperature, but when compared with previously published respiration rates for M. salmoides from northern latitudes, predicted respiration was higher at cool temperatures and lower at high temperatures. The reduced energetic cost near the isosmotic level (i.e. c. 9) may be an adaptive mechanism to tolerate periods of moderate salinity levels and may help explain why M. salmoides do not flee an area in response to increased salinity. Further, these results suggest that salinity has high energetic costs for coastal populations of M. salmoides and may contribute to the observed slow growth and small maximum size within coastal systems relative to inland freshwater populations.  相似文献

Summary [2-13C]-L-lysine, [3,4-13C2]-L-lysine and [5,6-13C2]-L-lysine are prepared from simple, commercially available, highly enriched starting materials as [2-13C]-glycine, ethyl [1,2-13C2]-bromo acetate, and [1,2-13C2]-acetonitrile. The introduction of the chiral center is based on a general method starting from the bis-lactim ether of cyclo-(D-Val-Gly). The synthesis of (2R)-[5-13C]-3,6-diethoxy-2,5-dihydro-2-isopropylpyrazine is described. The availability of our method for the preparation of specifically enriched bis-lactim ethers allows the synthesis of a great variety of site specific isotopically labelled (L- and D-)-amino acids. Moreover, intermediate 4-[(2R,5S)-3,6-diethoxy-2,5-dihydro-2-isopropyl-5-pyrazinyl]butyronitrile is a valuable precursor in the synthesis of L--aminoadipic acid. The synthetic scheme in this publication makes both L-lysine and L--aminoadipic acid13C- or15N-labelled at any position, easily available. The isotopomers of lysine are obtained on a preparative scale in good yields, with 99%13C and high enantiomeric purity (>97% e.e.). Three isotopomers are characterized using various spectroscopic techniques,e.g.,1H NMR,13C NMR and Mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Anthers of niger (Guizotia abyssinica. Cass) were inoculated onto five different media differing mainly in their inorganic and organic constituents and plant growth regulators to study their influence on callus induction (embryogenic/non-embryogenic) and plant regeneration. LS medium supplemented with 2 mg 1-1 2,4-d, and 0.3 mg 1-1 KN favoured the production of EC, whereas 2 mg 1-1 BAP and 0.5 mg 1-1 KN promoted the NEC from anthers. Different types of embryos were initiated upon transfer of EC to Chaleff's R-2 medium containing 2 mg 1-1 NAA and 0.3 mg 1-1 KN and/or 5 mg 1-1 ABA. NEC when transferred onto the medium supplemented with 1 mg 1-1 BAP and 0.1 mg 1-1 NAA produced on an average 8–12 shoots/callus mass. Embryoids developed from the EC and shoots differentiated from NEC when cultured onto the Chaleff's R-2 and MS media respectively lacking growth regulators, they transformed into whole plantlets. Summary The anaerobic transformation of malate and succinate into propionate was demonstrated in homogenates and mitochondria isolated from the body wall musculature ofArenicola marina, a facultative anaerobic polychaete. Synthesis of propionate from succinate was enhanced by the addition of malate and ADP. In the presence of malate, acetate was formed in addition to propionate. Maximal quantities of both fatty acids were produced by mitochondria incubated with malate, succinate, and ADP. Since the rate of propionate production in this case was about the same as in homogenates when related to fresh weight, it is concluded that the enzymatic system involved is localized exclusively in the mitochondria. The rate of propionate production is correlated with the concentration of succinate, saturation being reached at about 5 mM. In tracer experiments using (methyl-14C)-malonyl-CoA, 2,3-14C-succinate, and 1-14C-propionate as precursors, the pathway of the transformation of succinate into propionate was examined. The results indicate that methylmalonyl-CoA is an intermediary product. It was shown that the synthesis of propionate from succinate is coupled to the formation of ATP. The ratio ATP/propionate was 0.76. Dinitrophenol had only a slight effect on this ratio, although the utilization of succinate was inhibited considerably. Monosodium urate (MSU) crystals stimulate the production of arachidonic acid metabolites by human neutrophils and platelets. Neutrophils exposed to MSU generated leukotriene B4(LTB4). 6- -LTB4, 12- -6- -LTB4, and 5S, 12S DHETE from endogenous sources of arachidonate. In addition to these metabolites both monohyroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (i.e., 5-HETE) and w-oxidation products (i.e., 20-COOH LTB4) were formed by neutrophils exposed to MSU. Addition of exogenous arachidonic acid led to increased formation of each of these metabolites. When neutrophils were treated with colchicine (10 uM), LTB4 but 5-HETE formation was impaired. (1-14C) Arachidonate-labeled platelets exposed to MSU released (1-14C)-arachidonate. (14C)-12 HETE, (14C)-HHT and (14C)-thromboxane B2. Results indicate that MSU stimulates arachidonic acid metabolism in both human neutrophils and platelets. Moreover, they suggest not only that metabolites of arachidonate may be considered as possible candidates for mediators of inflammation in crystal-associated diseases, but that colchicine blocks the formation of LTB4.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and function of terrestrial planktonic microbial communities at depths greater than 600 m remain poorly established. Culture-independent methods using 16S rRNA genes and geochemical approaches were employed to investigate the heterogeneity and potential function of microbial communities residing within fractures at 0.7 to 1.4 kilometers below land surface of Beatrix Au Mine, South Africa. The salinity (26 to 47 mM Cl?), temperature (33 to 40°C) and age (1 to 5 Ma) of these fracture water increased with depth. The δD and δ18O values of fracture water ranged from ?44 to ?39‰ and from ?7 to ?4‰ VSMOW, respectively, and exhibited a mixing trend with fracture water collected from the same mine in a previous study where isotopic signatures were indicative of hydrothermal origin. Fracture water from Beatrix Mine was distinct from the groundwater in the overlying Karoo sedimentary strata in terms of its Cl?, He and CH4 concentrations, and its δD and δ18O signatures and from Vaal River (source of service water) in terms of its δD and δ18O signatures. The differences constrain the maximum amount of mixing with service water or shallow groundwater to be less than 4%. The 16S rDNA analyses revealed diverse and numerous novel 16S rRNA genes affiliated with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Nitrospira, Chlorobi, Thermus, Candidate Division OP3 and Euryarchaeota. The proportion of each phylum in clone libraries varied markedly among samples and suggests km-scale, spatial heterogeneity in community structures. Potential metabolisms inferred from the presence of 16S rRNA genes are generally consistent with estimates of the available free energy.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Surveys of the physico-chemical status of the River Zambezi in Moçambique were conducted between April 1973 and May 1974, to characterize the river prior to the closure of the Cabora Bassa Dam and to provide baseline data from which future changes in the river ecosystem can be followed. The temperature of the river water increases by about 3°C from Lake Kariba to the sea, and with an average pH of 7.8 the water is slightly more alkaline than Kariba Dam water. The river is well oxygenated with no sign of hydrogen sulphide. Transparency is generally very low and changes are mainly determined by the floods of local tributaries. The overall average total alkalinity is 55 mg 1?1 CaCO3, with no regular seasonal variation, average concentrations of chloride and sulphate are respectively, 5.4 mg 1?1 Cl? and 5.3 mg 1?1 SO2-4. They increase under both the influence of the ionically rich Shire River and the sea; the latter due to vertical mixing. Total hardness and calcium hardness behave in a similar way, while conductivity and silica concentrations increase slightly until the Zambezi—Shire confluence, at which point, conductivity increases by 25% to an average peak value of 153 μS cm?1, and silica decreases by 15% to a minimum average value of 15.5 mg 1?1 SiO2. Ammonia and nitrate concentrations show a clear seasonal variation, with respectively, minimum dry season and maximum wet season average values of about 0.05 mg 1?1 and 0.3 mg 1?1. The overall average concentration of nitrite is 0.004 mg 1?1. Orthophosphate in the river is mostly affected by Lake Kariba, though other sources are also of some importance. Maximum average concentrations of about 0.4 mg 1?1 PO3-4 were recorded during the dry season after the overturn of Lake Kariba. The concentration of dissolved metals is mainly determined by the outflow of Kariba and by the Shire River, with only K and Mg apparently affected by the outflow from Lake Kafue. It is concluded that the water quality of the Middle Zambezi is mainly determined by the Kariba Dam, with the Kafue Dam playing a minor role. At the time of the pre-impoundment survey, the main impact on water quality of the Lower Zambezi came from the Shire River. With the addition of yet another large reservoir on the Zambezi, in the form of Cabora Bassa, together with the appreciable effect of tributary rivers on the lake, and the likely increased impact of the Shire River on the now more regulated river, the quality of the Lower Zambezi is expected to alter considerably, with concomitant ecological changes.  相似文献

1. The single station diel oxygen curve method was used to determine the response of system metabolism to backfilling of a flood control canal and restoration of flow through the historic river channel of the Kissimmee River, a sub‐tropical, low gradient, blackwater river in central Florida, U.S.A. Gross primary productivity (GPP), community respiration (CR), the ratio of GPP/CR (P/R) and net daily metabolism (NDM) were estimated before and after canal backfilling and restoration of continuous flow through the river channel. 2. Restoration of flow through the river channel significantly increased reaeration rates and mean dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations from <2 mg L−1 before restoration of flow to 4.70 mg L−1 after flow was restored. 3. Annual GPP and CR rates were 0.43 g O2 m−2 day−1 and 1.61 g O2 m−2 day−1 respectively, before restoration of flow. After restoration of flow, annual GPP and CR rates increased to 3.95 O2 m−2 day−1 and 9.44 g O2 m−2 day−1 respectively. 4. The ratio of P/R (mean of monthly values) increased from 0.29 during the prerestoration period to 0.51 after flow was restored, indicating an increase in autotrophic processes in the restored river channel. NDM values became more negative after flow was restored. 5. After flow was restored, metabolism parameters were generally similar to those reported for other blackwater river systems in the southeast U.S.A. Postrestoration DO concentrations met target values derived from free flowing, minimally impacted reference streams.  相似文献

The aquatic stages of the cattle biting pest, Simulium chutteri Lewis utilize river flow in their dispersal and colonization behaviour. Peaks of drifting activity in S. chutteri larvae occurred in the early morning and late afternoon. It is deduced that female flies scatter eggs onto slow flowing waters upstream of rapids. Larvae hatch from drifting eggs and colonize substrates in slower flowing regions upstream of rapids, while later stage instars move into faster flowing regions within rapids where they complete their development. This microhabitat selection by S. chutteri leads to rapid attainment of large population sizes in suitable sections of river and reduces competition between different stage larvae. In their utilization of a variety of microhabitats the larvae of this species differ from co-existing simuliid species which restrict developmental stages to single habitats.Catastrophic drift was recorded for S. chutteri larvae and could be a mechanism to regulate population size.Drift of simuliid larvae off rapids was not related to benthic population densities in the rapids and was therefore not due to excessive production. It is concluded that larval drift off rapids is related to habitat disturbances associated with water flow fluctuations and the activity of aquatic predators and other animals.The distribution of S. chutteri in the Vaal River is restricted by oviposition requirements of the adult female. Knowledge of drift behaviour and water flow requirements of Simuliidae have been applied to manage the population size of S. chutteri in the Vaal River.  相似文献

A double-mutant cell line, which was unable to grow in a medium with NO 3 - as the sole nitrogen source and was resistant to 5-methyl-tryptophan (5MT), was selected from cell suspensions of Sinapis turgida Del. (Brassicaceae) by culturing the cells in AA medium (Toriyama and Hinata, 1985, Plant Sci. 41, 179–183) supplemented with 50 mM chlorate and 229 M 5MT. Protoplasts of this cell line were fused with mesophyll protoplasts of Brassica oleracea L. with dextran, and six somatic hybrids were selected initially by culture in the NO 3 - medium and then by transfer to the NO 3 - medium supplemented with 229 M 5MT. The somatic hybrids produced embryoids, leaves and plantlets on a regeneration medium. The hybrid characters were confirmed by investigations of acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) and peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) isoenzymes, chromosome number, growth on NO 3 - medium, 5MT resistance, and capacity to regenerate plants. Somatic hybrids between S. turgida Del. and B. nigra (L.) Koch were also obtained using this method. These results indicate that the double-mutant cell line established here will be able to serve as a universal hybridizer to select somatic hybrids after protoplast fusion with any other wild-type partner.Abbreviations B5 medium of Gamborg et al.
