The effect of living plants on root decomposition of four grass species   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We tested whether living plant roots of Holcus lanatus and Festuca ovina can affect the decomposition rate of dead roots of Holcus lanatus, Festuca rubra, Anthoxanthum odoratum and Festuca ovina. Moreover, we investigated whether this effect is dependent on the decomposing root species or the nitrogen supply during the growth of the roots. The selected perennial grass species are typical of grassland habitats in a range from high to low nitrogen availability: H. lanatus, F. rubra, A. odoratum and F. ovina. Seedlings of these species were homogeneously labelled with 14CO2 for eight weeks. Plants were grown on soil at two nitrogen levels: one without additional nitrogen and one with nitrogen addition (14 g N m−2).
At the start of the decomposition experiment 14C labelled roots were separated from soil and incubated in litterbags (mesh width 1 mm) in fresh soil. These 14C labelled roots were left to decompose for 19 weeks in an open greenhouse in soil planted with H. lanatus or F. ovina and in unplanted soil. After the incubation period, the decomposition of the 14C labelled roots of the four species was measured. The mass and 14C losses from the dead roots were calculated and the living plant biomass and C, N and P contents of the living plants were measured.
Living plant roots of F. ovina had positive effects on the decomposition rate of F. ovina root litter, but dead A. odoratum roots from the N fertilized treatment decomposed slower in the presence of living F. ovina plants. It seems likely that living plants like F. ovina exude carbon compounds that stimulate the growth of soil microbes and thereby increase dead root decomposition and mineralization. Root decomposition rates differed among the species. We found no evidence to support our hypothesis that dead roots of high fertility species (i.e. H. lanatus and F. rubra) decompose faster than dead roots of low fertility species (i.e. A. odoratum and F. ovina). In unplanted soil, the mass loss and total 14C loss from A. odoratum dead roots were higher than those from H. lanatus, F. rubra and F. ovina dead roots. Using open-top chambers, four prominent species (Lolium perenne,Cynosurus cristatus, Holcus lanatusandAgrostis capillaris) ofIrish neutral grasslands were grown at ambient and elevated(700 µmol mol-1) atmospheric CO2for a period of 8 months.The effects of interspecific competition on plant responsesto CO2enrichment were investigated by growing the species ina four-species mixture. The results indicate that the speciesdiffer in their ability to respond to elevated CO2. CO2-enrichmenthad the largest effect on the biomass production ofH. lanatus,but substantial stimulations in biomass production were alsofound for the other three species. The CO2-stimulation of biomassproduction forH. lanatuswas accompanied by increased tillering.In addition, reductions in specific leaf area were found forall species. Exposure to elevated CO2increased the communitybiomass of the four-species mixture. This increase can be mainlyattributed to a significant increase in the biomass ofH. lanatusatelevated CO2. No statistically-significant changes in speciescomposition of community biomass were found. However,H. lanatusdidincrease its share of community biomass at each of the harvests,with the other three species, mainlyL. perenne, suffering lossesin their shares at elevated CO2. Genotypes tolerant to zinc (Zn) toxicity, if they accumulateZn in their roots, may grow better than Zn-sensitive genotypes,even in Zn-deficient soil. In the present study, Holcus lanatusL. ecotypes differing in tolerance to Zn toxicity were grownin Zn-deficient Laffer soil which was amended with Zn to createa range of conditions from Zn deficiency to Zn toxicity. IncreasingZn additions to the soil, up to the sufficiency level, improvedgrowth of all ecotypes. At toxic levels of added Zn, the Zn-sensitiveecotype suffered a greater decrease in growth than the Zn-tolerantecotypes. All ecotypes accumulated more Zn in roots than inshoots, with root concentrations exceeding 8 g Zn kg-1dry weightin extreme cases. When grown in Zn-deficient or Zn-sufficientsoil (up to 0.5 mg Zn kg-1soil added), ecotypes tolerant toZn toxicity took up more Zn, grew better and had greater rootand shoot Zn concentration than the control (Zn-sensitive ecotype).Zn-tolerant ecotypes transported more Zn, copper (Cu) and iron(Fe) from roots to shoots in comparison with the Zn-sensitiveecotype. The average Zn uptake rate from Zn-deficient soil (noZn added) was greater in the Zn-tolerant ecotypes than in theZn-sensitive ecotype. In conclusion, ecotypes of H. lanatusthat are tolerant to Zn toxicity also tolerate Zn deficiencybetter than the Zn-sensitive ecotype because of their greatercapacity for taking up Zn from Zn-deficient soil. In Holcus lanatus L. phosphate and arsenate are taken up bythe same transport system. Short-term uptake kinetics of thehigh affinity arsenate transport system were determined in excisedroots of arsenate-tolerant and non-tolerant genotypes. In tolerantplants the Vmax of ion uptake in plants grown in phosphate-freemedia was decreased compared to non-tolerant plants, and theaffinity of the uptake system was lower than in the non-tolerantplants. Both the reduction in Vmax and the increase in Km ledto reduced arsenate influx into tolerant roots. When the twogenotypes were grown in nutrient solution containing high levelsof phosphate, there was little change in the uptake kineticsin tolerant plants. In non-tolerant plants, however, there wasa marked decrease in the Vmax to the level of the tolerant plantsbut with little change in the Km. This suggests that the lowrate of arsenate uptake over a wide range of differing rootphosphate status is due to loss of induction of the synthesisof the arsenate (phosphate) carrier. This study focuses on the influence of nitrogen (N) availability and species on rhizodeposition and on decomposition of rhizodeposits, roots and soil organic matter. Four perennial grass species were studied that are characteristic of grassland habitats that differ in nutrient availability. These perennial grass species, Holcus lanatus L., Festuca rubra L., Anthoxanthum odoratum L. and Festuca ovina L., were homogeneously labeled with 14CO2. Plants were grown on soil without N addition and with N addition (14 g N m–2). After 8 weeks, plants were harvested and root production and the remaining amount of rhizodeposits in the soil were measured. 14C-labelled roots were incubated in fresh soil. Decomposition was measured of 1) the labeled rhizodeposits in the soil in which the plants had been growing and 2) the labeled dead roots incubated in fresh soil, by trapping the evolved 14CO2, over 69 days.In general, decomposability of both roots and rhizodeposits increased when nitrogen availability increased. Moreover, the species differed in their response to N. Higher N supply increased total rhizodeposition of H. lanatus and the decomposability of rhizodeposited carbon compounds of this high fertility species was greater than of the low fertility species F. ovina, but lower than of A. odoratum. The presented study gives no evidence for a relation between root decomposition rate and the nutrient availability of the habitat of the four species. Overall, we suggest on the basis of the results that species can affect nutrient cycling by differences in rates of rhizodeposition and litter production. This offers a mechanism whereby species can influence species replacement during succession.  相似文献

Airborne pollen and spore levels were monitored at seven sites in New Zealand using the Intermittent Cycling Rotorod sampler during the summer of 1988/1989. Grasses formed the major component of atmospheric pollen levels during spring and summer at every locality. Peak levels of grass and total pollen occurred during December or late November, with a slight latitudinal lag apparent at the more southern sites. Highest levels were recorded at the smaller rural centres of Gore and Kaikohe and the lowest at the larger urban centres of Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. We make a first approximation of the likely risk to hayfever and allergic asthma patients at each of the seven centres. For example, significantly higher grass pollen levels were experienced at Kaikohe on 44% and 65% of days during November and December, compared with just 15% and 8% at Auckland. By recording the flowering seasons of the principal allergenic grass species at each locality, we determined the potentially allergenic grasses contributing to peak pollen levels, the most ubiquitous being tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.,L. multiflorum Lam.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus L.) and sweet vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum L.). Root systems are highly plastic as they express a range of responses to acquire patchily distributed nutrients. However, the ecological significance of placing roots selectively in nutrient hotspots is still unclear. Here, we investigate under what conditions selective root placement may be a significant functional trait that determines belowground competitive ability. We studied two grasses differing in root foraging behaviour, Festuca rubra and Anthoxanthum odoratum. The plants were grown in stable and more dynamic heterogeneous environments, by switching nutrient patches halfway through the experiment. A. odoratum was a factor of two less selective in placing its roots into nutrient-rich patches than F. rubra. A. odoratum produced overall higher root length densities with higher specific root length than F. rubra and acquired more nutrients. A. odoratum appeared to be the superior competitor, irrespective of the nutrient dynamics. Our results suggest that root behaviour consisting of producing high root length densities at relatively low biomass investments can be a more effective foraging strategy than placing roots selectively in nutrient hotspots. When understanding the functionality of root traits among different species, specific root length may play a key role.  相似文献

Many species of wireworms (larvae of click beetles, Elateridae) are poly- phagous root herbivores. In grasslands under restoration succession with various grass species, we aim to determine the role of wireworms in aboveground vegetation succession. Therefore, it is crucial to know whether wireworms prefer some food plants to others. We have investigated the root preference to different grass species for Agriotes obscurus and Athous haemorrhoidalis and whether these preferences can be explained by covariates. In Experiment 1, individual wireworms could choose between four different plants, one of each species (Anthoxanthum odoratum, Festuca rubra, Holcus lanatus, and Lolium perenne). In Experiment 2, groups of wireworms were released into the soil in the center of 16 plants (4 from each species). We used multinomial logit models (MLMs) to analze the data. In the appendix the use of multinomial response models is clarified with a fictitious example, using the SAS statistic software package. No preference was found in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2 we found differences in attractiveness of plant species depending on wireworm species: A. obscurus preferred grass species from nutrient-rich grasslands (L. perenne and H. lanatus). Both wireworm species disliked F. rubra. The distance from the release point influenced the probability of being found at a certain place at the end of the experiment: wireworms tended to stay in the proximity of the release point. A. haemorrhoidalis was more often found farther from the point of release than A. obscurus. Dispersal was farther from the release point in experiments with young plants (6 weeks) compared to older ones (9 weeks). Results are discussed in a broad ecological context.  相似文献

Vegetative growth of grasses was analysed by dry mass increaseof growing leaves.Holcus lanatuswas grown in a controlled environmentand leaf extension rates of leaf numbers 5–10 of the maintiller were monitored daily. Leaf appearance and leaf extensionrates (LER) of leaves 5–7 enabled the prediction of thefinal length and dry mass of leaf 8 during its growth. A linearincrease of leaf mass per unit leaf length (LML) of leaf 8 wasobserved during growth. After harvest the daily increase indry mass of growing leaves was calculated from the LER and correspondingincrease in LML. The relative growth rate (RGR) of the maintiller showed day-to-day fluctuations and was gradually reducedby 50% over a 16-d period. The RGR of the shoot was maintainedby tillering. The RGR of a single (grass) plant can be calculatedfrom four parameters only: LER, LML, leaf appearance and tillering.Variation of RGR over a period can be reconstructed after harvestand the impact of these four parameters on RGR can be established.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company. 为探讨褐稻虱Nilaparvata lugens (Stål)种群生态控制的作用机理,应用状态空间方程和作用因子添加分析法,研究植物次生物质不同组合对褐稻虱种群的控制作用;本研究以薇甘菊Mikania micrantha乙醇提取物、 飞机草Eupatorium odoratum乙醇提取物与现代苦楝Melia azedarach油的不同组合,作用于褐稻虱种群;根据不同虫期的调查数据,拟合出控制矩阵中各分块矩阵的元素值,并对褐稻虱种群的控制作用进行模拟。结果表明:单独施用薇甘菊乙醇提取物(1 g DW/100 mL)、飞机草乙醇提取物(1 g DW/100 mL)、 现代苦楝油(200倍)各1次, 能显著降低褐稻虱种群数量, 然而种群趋势指数I(population trend index)仍在1.00以上,即下代褐稻虱种群仍呈增长趋势,联合添加其中2种或3种能持续控制褐稻虱下代种群的增长。同时,植物次生物质对褐稻虱种群的控制作用主要表现在对成虫产卵的忌避作用,尤其是在本田种群建立的初期,由于其显著的忌避作用, 降低田间卵量,使其种群数量明显降低,可有效地控制其为害。  相似文献

【背景】飞机草是我国危害最严重的入侵植物之一,目前仍缺乏可持续的控制手段。【方法】运用De Wit取代试验研究法,设置2株·盆-1(42.42株·m~(-2))、4株·盆-1(84.84株·m-2)和8株·盆~(-1)(169.68株·m~(-2))3种密度,分别研究杂交狼尾草、木豆、山毛豆和宽叶雀稗与飞机草的竞争效应,以明确4种牧草对飞机草的替代控制潜力。【结果】3种密度下,杂交狼尾草和木豆均可以显著抑制飞机草的生长,其竞争平衡指数显著大于0,说明杂交狼尾草和木豆的竞争力均大于飞机草;山毛豆和宽叶雀稗的相对产量均显著小于1,其竞争平衡指数均显著小于0,说明山毛豆和宽叶雀稗的竞争力小于飞机草。【结论】杂交狼尾草和木豆可用作飞机草的替代控制植物。  相似文献

Contrasting effects on the stomatal index (SI), stomatal density,epidermal cell size and number were observed in four chalk grasslandherbs (Sanguisorba minor Scop., Lotus corniculatus L., Anthyllisvulneraria L. and Plantago media L.) following exposure to elevatedcarbon dioxide concentrations (CO2) in controlled environmentgrowth cabinets. SI of S. minor increased for both leaf surfaces,whilst in A. vulneraria and P. media SI decreased on one surfaceonly. In L. corniculatus , no differences in SI were observedas epidermal cell density changed in parallel with stomataldensity. In L. corniculatus and S. minor stomatal density increasedon both surfaces, whereas in P. media it decreased; in A. vulnerariastomatal density decreased on the abaxial leaf surface alonefollowing exposure to elevated CO2. In the latter three species,SI changed because stomatal density did not change in parallelwith epidermal cell density. The results suggest elevated CO2is either directly or indirectly affecting cell differentiationand thus stomatal initiation in the meristem. In S. minor and P. media leaf growth increased in elevated CO2,because of increased cell expansion of epidermal cells, whereasin L. corniculatus, epidermal cell size decreased and greaterleaf growth was because of an increase in epidermal cell divisions.In A. vulneraria, leaf size did not change, but increased cellexpansion on the adaxial surface suggests CO2 affects leaf surfacesdifferently, either directly or indirectly at the cell differentiationstage or as the leaf grows. These results suggest component species of a plant communitymay differ in their response to elevated CO2. Components of seed yield of cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) andcv. Unicrop (L. angustifolius L.) were measured when grown atthree densities. The low density (10 plants m–2) Unicropyield (34 g seed per plant) was 1.8 times that of Ultra as ithad more branches, pods and seeds per pod. Ultra seeds (310mg per seed) were heavier than Unicrop seeds (180 mg). The branchingpattern of Ultra was less dependent on plant density, henceat 93 plants m–2 it gave a higher per plant yield (7.4vs 6.4 g) than Unicrop at lower densities (83 plants m–2).Density had most influence on pod formation and only small effectson seeds per pod and seed weight. Yield components on the main-steminflorescence were influenced less by density than componentson branch inflorescences. Later formed, higher order generationsof inflorescences were most affected by increased inter- andintra-plant competition. Pod numbers on the main-stem were similarfor both species. Pods formed at higher flower nodes in Unicrop,but the lower flower nodes were less fertile than those in Ultra.Node position of flowers had no influence on seed set in main-stemUnicrop pods, but pods from higher nodes in Ultra formed fewerseeds. Binary additive series experiments involving various pairedcombinations of barnyardgrass (BYG), redroot pigweed (RPW),green foxtail (GFT) and rape (RPS) were undertaken in fieldplots in 1980 and 1981. The experimental design used permittedinvestigation of the performance of a one species (the ‘competitor’) over a range of densities, in the presenceof different constant densities of a second species (the ‘indicator’),and as pure stands. Top growth (d.wt after approximately 95d) in monoculture was found to be well-described by de Wit'sspacing formula where Ms is yield, s is space per seed or plant, is maximum(asymptotic) yield at infinite density and ß is spaceper seed or plant at half the maximum yield (i.e. /2). The formulawas also found to fit the observed yields of a competing speciesover the entire range of densities of an indicator. Correlationcoefficients between observed yields and values calculated bymeans of the spacing formula ranged from 0.934 to 0.999, withmost greater than 0.990. The changes in the slopes of a competingspecies' yield curves as indicator density increases reflectthe competitive abilities of the pair of species present. Barnyardgrassand RPS were found to be strong competitors against RPW andGFT, and RPW strongly competed against GFT. The spacing formulacan thus be used to predict the performance of a competing speciesin additive series experiments, and thereby provides anothermeans of investigating crop-weed and other interactions. Changes in the dry weight (dry wt.), total and neutral lipids,and fatty acid composition were determined in the cotyledonsand axis of Citrullus lanatus cv. Sugar baby seedlings duringtheir first 12 d growth in the dark, at 25 ? 1 ?C. The major stored reserves were mobilized between days 3 and8. The lipid concentration after day 4 decreased rapidly inthe cotyledons. On the first day the lipid concentration inthe axis was higher than in the cotyledons but decreased rapidlyand from day 5 up to the end of the experiments it remainedat very low values. In the cotyledons, the change in the fattyacid composition was relatively small compared to the significantchange observed in the axis. The neutral lipids of the cotyledonsdecreased sharply between days 2 and 6 while their fatty acidcomposition suffered no significant change. The axis, comparedto the cotyledons, contained a small but concentrated amountof neutral lipids, which decreased up to day 6. Thereafter,an increase was observed. The fatty acid composition of theaxis neutral lipids changed significantly, linoleic and oleicacid decreased while palmitic and linolenic acid increased. Population density affected the sex expression of agar-growngametophytes of Onoclea sensibilis L. The time of onset of sexualitywas advanced, the proportion of females was increased, and thegrowth rate of individuals was greater at lower densities. Populationdensity had no effect on the sex expression of Onoclea grownon ashed soil, and there was no difference in growth rate ofindividuals grown on ashed soil at different densities. Covariateanalysis, using thallus width as a measure of growth rate, indicatedthat the effect of density on sex expression was mostly associatedwith growth rate. The differing effects of population densityon agar and ashed soil demonstrate that substrate influencessex expression in Onoclea. This influence is most dramatic insingle-gametophyte cultures, where agar cultures produced 97per cent females and ashed soil cultures 100 per cent males. Use of the self-thinning rule to describe size/density compensation(SDC) in defoliated swards is examined. It is shown that defoliationrelated variation in leaf area and associated morphogeneticchanges in plant structure necessitate slope corrections, designatedCa and Cr , respectively. The theory predicts that reduced leafarea in more heavily defoliated swards will result in SDC atslopes more negative than -3/2 (variable leaf area SDC), andthat there will be a transition to -3/2 (constant leaf area)SDC at higher herbage mass. Empirical data from previous experiments with Lolium perenneL. and Medicago sativa L. are examined, and appear to confirmthe theoretical predictions, including the slope change at thepoint of transition from variable to constant leaf area SDC.This transition point, designated di , is subject to interspecificvariation and is related to the mature shoot size of a particularspecies. Detritus based food webs may mediate the impacts of invasive species on ecosystem processes. Holcus lanatus (L.) is an invasive perennial grass that is rapidly spreading in the coastal prairie of California. We used litterbags to determine if H. lanatus altered the rate of litter decomposition through its interaction with the dominant macroinvertebrate detritivore at our study site, the isopod Porcellio scaber (Latreille). Over the course of a year, H. lanatus litter loss was 15% less than annual grasses, a difference that was directly attributable to P. scaber. Although there was no effect of isopods on litter loss during the winter, when most decomposition occurred, isopods had substantial effects on litter loss of annual grasses during the summer. P. scaber had no effect on litter loss of H. lanatus litter. Our findings suggest that H. lanatus invasion slows decomposition in the coastal prairie because it is unusually refractory to an important detritivore. The decreased decomposition of H. lanatus litter, along with increased production during the growing season, lead to a doubling of the end-of-season litter biomass where H. lanatus had invaded.  相似文献

Shoot Growth and Mortality Patterns of Urtica dioica, a Clonal Forb   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The growth and mortality patterns of the clonal forb Urticadioica were investigated at the level of the individual shootin two growing seasons, 1991 and 1992, in a natural stand. Shootheight and diameter at ground level of each shoot tagged inspring were measured repeatedly five times during the growingseason. Dry weights of these repeatedly measured shoots wereestimated using an allometric relationship between dry weight,height and diameter of harvested shoots. A large decrease inshoot density occurred with stand development from the beginningof the growing season in both the years: (1) shoot survivalrate was about 30% at the end of the growing season; (2) shootmortality rate per 10 x 10 cm subplot between censuses was positivelydependent on shoot density per subplot; (3) the mortality rateof individual shoots was negatively dependent on shoot size(height, diameter and weight) at each growing stage, suggestingone-sided competition between living and dying shoots; (4) shootsize (height, diameter and weight) variability in terms of thecoefficient of variation and skewness decreased in accordancewith shoot mortality. Symmetric competition between living shootswas detected by regression analysis based on a model for individualshoot growth considering the degree of competitive asymmetry.However, the competitive effect on individual shoot growth wasvery small (nearly absent). The mortality pattern of Urticadioica indicates that shoot self-thinning occurred from theearly growing stage as in non-clonal crowded monospecific stands,and contrasts with many clonal plants where shoot self-thinningrarely occurs or, if any, is confined only to a short periodof the later growing stage. The pattern of growth and competitionbetween living shoots of Urtica dioica contrasts with non-clonalcrowded plants undergoing intense competition (usually asymmetric)between individuals, but is a common feature of many clonalplants where shoot competition is supposed to be reduced by'physiological integration' between shoots. These form a newpattern not reported yet for clonal plants. It is pointed outthat clonal plants show a wider spectrum of the growth, competitionand mortality patterns of shoots than non-clonals. Genetic diversity of 23 populations of Carthamus tinctorius L. and two populations of Carthamus lanatus L. in China was investigated using Sequence-related Amplified Polymorphism (SRAP). All populations could be uniquely distinguished by 30 primer combinations with 483 bands and 274 polymorphic bands which generated 57% of polymorphic ratio. Unweighed pair-group method of with arithmetical averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis enabled construction of a dendrogram for estimating genetic distances among different populations. The extreme variation was observed when No. 4 cultivated and No. 13 wild population of C. lanatus were grouped at GS = 0.58, and separated from 23 populations of C. tinctorius at GS = 0.10. The result suggested that the cultivated and wild populations of C. lanatus had close relationship with each other and far relationship with C. tinctorius. Dendrogram also revealed a large genetic variation in 23 C. tinctorius populations; different primer combinations allowed them distinctly distinguished one from others with relatively low genetic similarity. Furthermore, five typical representative fragments in C. lanatus were obtained by four most informative primer combinations, which provided a possibility to distinguish C. lanatus from the C. tinctorius evidently.  相似文献
