Summary The earthworm Lumbricus rubellus contained more Ca and Zn, and less Pb and Cd, than Dendrobaena rubida living in the same contaminated disused-mine soil. Differences in the kinetics of Ca turnover may account for some of the inter-specific differences in heavy metal burdens, although the calciferous glands do not seem to be directly involved in heavy metal excretion. A comparison of the present findings with published data indicated that the concentration of soil Ca and the bioavailability of heavy metals, both factors being allied to soil pH, are important exogenous determinants of heavy metal accumulation by different earthworm populations. Electron microprobe X-ray analysis of air-dried smears of chloragogenous tissue showed that the metals were fairly specifically compartmentalized into two distinct organelles in both worms: Ca, Pb and Zn were found (associated with P) in the chloragosomes; Cd was found (with S and probably in stoichiometric association) in a more electron-lucent vesicular component, designated the cadmosome, but which may be identical with the debris vesicles which are characteristic inclusions in conventionally-fixed chloragocytes. The in vivo incorporation of Pb by the chloragosomes of D. rubida was accompanied by the loss of Ca, Zn and P.  相似文献

Summary The two pairs of lobes of the calciferous gland of the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris are specialized oesophageal diverticulae that secrete spherites ranging from 0.5–7.0 m in diameter. Correlative transmission and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the spherites (which are predominantly CaCO3) are formed extracellularly in distinctive bays bounded by secretory-cell processes, and are mobilized anteriorly from the gland lumina to the lumen of a non-secretory pouch, where the majority coalesce and undergo phase transformation to concretions 0.5–1.0 mm in diameter consisting of a mass of cuboidal crystals with facets up to 40 m. The distribution of Sr (0.1 ml 5 % SrCl2 injected into the posterior coelomic cavity) was monitored in the mineralized secretory products of the calciferous glands by X-ray microanalysis of 10 m — thick air-dried cryostat sections in a SEM. Strontium was not detected in chloragosomes at 2 h and 24 h post-injection. Strontium was transported anteriorly and specifically incorporated into gland spherites (detectable within 2h). This technique of Sr localization afforded sufficient structural and analytical resolutions to provide a confirmation of the sequence of extracellular changes in the gland/pouch system. In addition we were able to distinguish a population of growing spherites from the vast majority of mature spherites; size alone was a singularly poor indication of spherite growth. The major element constituents of the chloragosomes were P, Ca and Zn (Ca: P ranging from 0.4 to 1.0; Zn: P from about 0.05 to 0.45). Analysis of individual spherites showed that Ca was probably bound to P or P-containing matrix components, whilst Zn was probably linked to one or more different but unknown constituents.  相似文献

Earthworm populations from 200 fields (132 pasture and 68 arable) in Scotland are compared. Earthworms populations from two pasture fields at a Scottish farm infested with the New Zealand terrestrial planarian, Arthurdendyus triangulates (a predator of earthworms), are compared with a subset of these 200 fields (none of which had planarians at the time of the survey). A variety of univariate and multivariate methods are used for comparison. Results from the 200 fields show that the number of individuals, number of species, richness and diversity decline eastwards and northwards across Scotland. There is an overall difference between pasture and arable fields at the same farm, with fewer anecic earthworms (Aporrectodea longa and Lumbricus terrestris), but more Aporrectodea rosea, in arable fields. Conversely, species richness and cumulative species diversity is greater in arable fields, and sample similarity is less. The planarian‐infested fields show differences from the subset of western Scottish pasture fields and from each other. Both have fewer Aporrectodea caliginosa (and endogeic total) and A. longa (and anecic total) than the western pasture fields. One field has fewer L. terrestris and fewer earthworms in total. Univariate factors show no significant differences between the infested fields and similar non‐infested fields, but multivariate analysis suggests differences. Waterlogging and recent growth of rushes in the infested fields are discussed in relation to the reduced population of earthworms and to rainfall.  相似文献

Summary The elemental compositions of chloragosome granules in the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus living in non-polluted (Dinas Powys) and heavily Pb-polluted (Wemyss) soils were determined by fully quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis. P, Ca, S and Zn were the major elemental components of the chloragosomes. High Pb concentrations were found in chloragosomes of Wemyss animals; Pb was not detected in chloragosomes of Dinas Powys animals. Partial correlation and regression analysis indicated that the in vivo accumulation of Pb by chloragosomes was accompanied by diminished chloragosomal Ca concentrations. Pb is bound by P-containing ligand(s) in the chloragosome matrix. The sequestration of Pb by chloragosomes results in the detoxification of the metal by accumulative immobilization.  相似文献

Summary The chloragog cells of the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris contain numerous granules, chloragosomes, which were analyzed for metals and phosphate by histochemistry, by use of an electron microscope X-ray microprobe (EMMA), and by chemical analysis of chloragosome preparations. Inorganic and organic phosphate each accounts for about 3% of the chloragosome dry mass, Ca for 2–3%, Zn for 1–3% and Mg for 0.2–0.4%. Carbonate is not present in chloragosomes. The average molar ratios CaMgZntotal PO4 are 10.10.31. The CaPO4 ratio is fairly constant (correlation coefficient 0.99), while the ZnPO4 ratio varies considerably. It is concluded that Ca is bound in the form of inorganic CaHPO4 and organic ROPO 3Ca (or possibly Ca-polyphosphate complexes). Mg may also be phosphate-bound, while Zn probably is not. Chemical analysis of the calciferous glands revealed a high concentration of Ca, small amounts of Mg and phosphate, but no Zn. It is concluded that Zn is not excreted through the calciferous gland.Storage of Ca in the chloragocytes and excretion of CaCO3 by the calciferous gland may be physiologically linked. Regulation of the concentrations of Ca and HCO3 ions in the blood and coelomic fluid may assist in equalization of osmotic pressures during dehydration and rehydration. This regulation may be a major function of the chloragosomes. The chloragosomes were discussed in relation to the spherites of various arthropods and molluscs and to the cytosomes of anoxia-tolerating molluscs.I wish to thank Theodore A. Hall for the use of the EMMA-4 microprobe facility, T.C. Norrnann for help in performing the microprobe analysis, Bruno Hansen for the improved zinc determination method and Annette Prentø for performing the chemical analyses. Summary The elemental compositions of chloragosome granules in the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus living in non-polluted and heavily Zn-polluted soils were determined by fully quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis. P, Ca, S and Zn were the major elemental components of the chloragosomes. The in vivo accumulation of Zn by the chloragosomes was accompanied by diminished chloragosomal Ca concentrations. Zn was apparently bound by at least two ligand pools (Pool 1=uncharacterised; Pool 2=P-containing ligands, binding approximately 45% and 55% of the Zn, respectively) in the control chloragosomes. In Zn-contaminated chloragosomes, most (70%) was bound by P-containing ligand(s) but some (<1%) was also bound by S-containing ligands. It is suggested that the sequestration of Zn in chloragosomes results in the detoxification of the metal by accumulative immobilisation.  相似文献

Life-cycle and foraging patterns of native Bombus terrestris populations were investigated at two sites in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, Phassalis (0 – 100 m above sea level [a.s.l.]) and Termessos (500 – 700 m a.s.l.). Bumble-bee activity was recorded during standard bee walks from November 2003 until the end of October 2004, each site being visited three times every month during the one-year period. The yearly dynamics of flight, the flowering plant species visited, and the visitation frequencies of these plants were recorded during every bee walk at both sites. There were considerable differences between the two populations with regard to the dates when the queens emerged from diapause (the emerging season), the timing of the appearance of sexuals (young queens and males), and the total number of plant species visited. Bombus terrestris queens emerged from diapause in November-December at the Phassalis site (coastal area) and in February-March at the Termessos site. The queens aestivated at the Phassalis site, whereas they hibernated at the Termessos site. Only one generation per year was produced at each site. The duration of the queens’ diapause lasted 5 – 8 months and length of the life cycle 190 – 215 days. Native B. terrestris populations were noted to forage on 47 flowering plant species from 20 families (10 at the Phassalis site and 40 at the Termessos site) during the study period. Two of the plant species (Arbutus unedo L. and Vitex agnus-castus L.) have long flowering periods and play a crucial role in the life cycle of native B. terrestris populations. The emergence of queens at the aestivation site was synchronized with the flowering of Arbutus unedo L., while the emergence of sexuals coincided with the flowering of Vitex agnus-castus L. at both sites. The cytochemical and functional characteristics of chloragocytes of both 'control' and cold-stressed Eisenia fetida were examined. Flow cytometry revealed the heterogeneity of chloragocytes: the first group was characterized by low, the second one by high acid phosphatase (AcP) content. In 'control' animals the former, in cold-stressed ones the latter type were the dominant form. The elevated AcP-activity correlated with the accumulation of autophagic vacuoles (AVs) in chloragocytes. Both AVs and all small chloragosomes showed high AcP activity, while most of the large chloragosomes did not display any. Most 'control' granules (0.75-1.25 μm) contained high amounts of Ca and P, with less and variable quantities of S, Cl, K, Fe and Zn. Small chloragosomes with low Ca and P concentrations were seldom found. In cold-stressed animals the number of small granules (0.25-0.75 μm) increased up to 40% of total population. Their Ca and P contents were significantly lower; S and Fe concentrations were higher than those of large chloragosomes (1.0-1.5 μm). Our results prove that the formation and elemental composition of chloragosomes can be influenced by environmental stressors and suggest that the mature chloragosomes are tertiary lysosomes and their formation is coupled to autophagocytosis.  相似文献

A field experiment involving two planting densities (83,333 and 166,666 plants per ha), two cropping systems (monoculture and mixed culture) and five cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)] genotypes was conducted at Nietvoorbij (33°54S, 18°14E), Stellenbosch, South Africa, to select cowpea material with superior growth and water-use efficiency (WUE). The results showed significantly higher photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance and transpiration in leaves of plants at low density and in monoculture due to greater chlorophyll (Chl) levels relative to those at high density and in mixed culture. As a result, C concentration in leaves and the amount of C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B accumulated in shoots at low density and under monoculture were also much higher. Even though no marked differences in photosynthetic rates were found between and among the five cowpea genotypes, leaf C concentration and shoot C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B contents differed considerably, with Sanzie exhibiting the highest C concentration and C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B contents in shoots, followed by Bensogla and Omondaw, while ITH98-46 and TVu1509 had the lowest shoot concentration and contents of C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B. WUE (calculated as photosynthate produced per unit water molecule transpired) was significantly greater in plants at low density and monoculture relative to those at high density and in mixed culture. Isotopic analysis revealed significant differences in δ13C values of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor L. (Moench.)] and cowpea, with higher δ13C values being obtained for plants at low density and in monoculture relative to those at high density or in mixed culture. The five cowpea genotypes also showed significant differences in δ13C values, with Sanzie exhibiting the most negative value (i.e. low WUE) and ITH98-46, the least negative δ13C value (i.e. high WUE). Whether measured isotopically or from gas-exchange studies, sorghum (a C4 species) exhibited much higher WUE relative to cowpea (a C3 species). Both correlation and regression analyses revealed a positive relationship between WUE from gas-exchange studies and δ13C values from isotopic analysis of cowpea and sorghum shoots.  相似文献

Four common earthworm species, the anecic Lumbricus terrestris, the endogeic Octolasion tyrteum as well as the epigeic Eisenia fetida and Dendrobaena veneta, were examined for the presence of the microbial gut symbiont Plagiotoma lumbrici. The evolutionary origin of this endobiotic microbe was reconstructed, using the 18S rRNA gene, the ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 region, and the first two domains of the 28S rRNA gene. Plagiotoma lumbrici was exclusively detected in the anecic Lumbricus terrestris. Multigene analyses and the ITS2 secondary structure robustly determined the phylogenetic home of Plagiotoma lumbrici populations within the oxytrichid Dorsomarginalia (Spirotrichea: Hypotrichia) as a sister taxon of the free‐living Hemiurosomoida longa. This indicates that earthworms obtained their gut endosymbiont by ingesting soil/leaf litter containing oxytrichine ciliates that became adapted to the intestinal tract of earthworms. Interestingly, according to the literature data, Plagiotoma lumbrici was detected in multiple anecic and some epigeic but never in endogeic earthworms. These observations suggest that Plagiotoma lumbrici might be adapted to certain gut conditions and the lifestyle of anecic Lumbricidae, such as Lumbricus, Aporrectodea, and Scherotheca, as well as of some co‐occurring epigeic Lumbricus species.  相似文献

Nectar-carbohydrate production and composition were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography and enzymology in nine species from five tribes of the Brassicaceae. In six species (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., Brassica napus L., B. rapa L., Lobularia maritima (L.) Desv., Raphanus sativus L., Sinapis arvensis L.) that produced nectar from both lateral nectaries (associated with the short stamens) and median nectaries (outside the long stamens), on average 95% of the total nectar carbohydrate was collected from the lateral ones. Nectar from these glands possessed a higher glucose/fructose ratio (usually 1.0–1.2) than that from the median nectaries (0.2–0.9) within the same flower. Comparatively little sucrose was detected in any nectar samples except from Matthiola bicornus (Sibth. et Sm.) DC., which possessed lateral nectaries only and produced a sucrose-dominant exudate. The anatomy of the nectarial tissue in nectar-secreting flowers of six species, Hesperis matronalis L., L. maritima, M. bicornus, R. sativus, S. arvensis, and Sisymbrium loeselii L., was studied by light and scanning-electron microscopy. Phloem alone supplied the nectaries. However, in accordance with their overall nectar-carbohydrate production, the lateral glands received relatively rich quantities of phloem that penetrated far into the glandular tissue, whereas median glands were supplied with phloem that often barely innervated them. All nectarial tissue possessed modified stomata (with the exception of the median glands of S. loeselii, which did not produce nectar); further evidence was gathered to indicate that these structures do not regulate nectar flow by guard-cell movements. The numbers of modified stomata per gland showed no relation to nectar-carbohydrate production. Taken together, the data on nectar biochemistry and nectary anatomy indicate the existence of two distinct nectary types in those Brassicacean species that possess both lateral and median nectaries, regardless of whether nectarial tissue is united around the entire receptacle or not. It is proposed that the term “nectarium” be used to represent collectively the multiple nectaries that can be found in individual flowers. To assess the impact of Bombus terrestris invasion on the foraging efficiency of native Japanese bumblebees, consumption and acquisition of floral resources during foraging on flowers of native Japanese plant species were investigated using enclosures with three treatments: one with only B. terrestris (exotic), one with both B. terrestris and native Japanese bumblebee species (mixed), and one with only Japanese species (native), but with the bumblebee density held constant. Changes in the body mass of queens and the nest mass of colonies for two days did not significantly differ among four combinations of the species and treatment, B. terrestris in the exotic and mixed treatments and Japanese species in the mixed and native treatments. Thus, it is not clear that B. terrestris has higher foraging efficiency than native species and that B. terrestris individuals more negatively affect the foraging efficiency of native species than individuals of the native species themselves. The nectar standing crop of Cirsium kamtschaticum was smaller in the exotic treatment than in the mixed and native treatments. However, this may have been an artifact of differences in the numbers of flowers in the various treatments. T. Nagamitsu and T. Kenta contributed equally to this work  相似文献

Summary Six grass species which differed in ability to grow on serpentine soils were assayed for root surface acid phosphatase activity in solutions of Ca, Mg, Ni, Cr III, Cr VI, and Zn at various concentrations. The root surface phosphatases of relatively serpentine tolerant species (Festuca rubra, Festuca pratensis and Holcus lanatus) were unaffected by the external Ca concentration whereas Ca increased the activity of root surface phosphatase in species relatively intolerant to serpentine soil conditions (Phleum pratense vars Scots and S51 and Lolium perenne). There were no differences shown between a tolerant and an intolerant grass in their responses to Mg, Ni, Cr III, Cr VI or Zn. re]19760611  相似文献

Summary Studies on the morphological and physiological characteristics of two strains of Lineola longa showed that these aerobic bacteria form endospores, are Gram-positive and have peritrichous flagella. On the basis of these observations it was concluded that L. longa is, in fact, a Bacillus species. This conclusion was strengthened by the fact that both strains exhibited nutritional characteristics often encountered among the aerobic sporeforming rods, such as requirements for biotin and thiamine in the growth medium. The base ratio of the DNA purified from L. longa was found to be within the range reported for a number of species of Bacillus.Additional investigation of the nutritional behavior of L. longa indicated that neither strain studied used glucose as an oxidizable substrate or as a carbon source. However, fatty acids and amino acids were readily utilized for growth. L. longa, on the basis of its morphological and physiological properties, could not be identified with any of the established species of Bacillus. It is suggested, therefore, that L. longa be recognized as a new species within the genus Bacillus and that it be renamed Bacillus macroides.  相似文献

Conservation tillage combined with crop-residue mulching is increasingly important to meet soil protection targets. Concurrently, the health risk of soil-borne pathogenic fungi like Fusarium species, which produce deoxynivalenol (DON) as their major mycotoxin, is increasing. The detritivorous earthworm species Lumbricus terrestris takes part in the efficient degradation of Fusarium-infected and DON-contaminated wheat straw. Against this background, a laboratory study was conducted to quantify by means of ELISA technique the uptake of DON and its possible absorption and accumulation in tissue by L. terrestris in the short-term (5 weeks) and long-term (11 weeks). The DON concentrations in L. terrestris of the Fusarium-infected treatment were significantly different in the order of gut tissue > body wall > gut content at both dates with a decline in the long-term. The DON concentrations in the tissues decreased by an order of magnitude of weeks to months.  相似文献

Abstract

Browse tree leaves of six species of Acacia (A. angustissima L., A. drepanolobium L., A. nilotica L., A. polyacantha L., A. senegal L., A. tortilis L.) were screened for chemical composition, including minerals and trace elements. Crude protein (CP) varied among the species from 145 (A. senegal) to 229 g/kg DM (A. angustissima). The species had moderate to high levels of minerals. The concentrations of Ca, P, Mg and S varied among the species from 14.6 – 31.5, 3.5 – 4.9, 1.4 – 3.0 and 1.7 – 2.8 g/kg DM, respectively. The forages showed relatively low concentrations of trace elements. Content of trace elements varied among the species from 4.5 – 23.8, 99.4 – 173.6, 146.2 – 432, 41.0 – 90.1, 10.9 – 22.2 and 0.05 – 0.65 mg/kg DM for Cu, Mo, Fe, Mn, Zn and Co, respectively. All leaves of browse species would meet the normal requirements for Ca, P, Mg and S in ruminants, although some species had higher levels of Ca than tabulated mineral requirements in livestock. Assayed Cu, Mn, Zn and Co would satisfy the lower range of recommended requirements of trace elements depending on their bioavailability. Therefore, browse leaves from Acacias could form good sources of CP and mineral supplements to ruminants.  相似文献

Dilute formalin was used to sample earthworm populations in a field experiment comparing conventional (CFS) and integrated (IFS) farming systems, at Long Ashton in SW England during 1990–2000. Crops in the CFS were established by ploughing. Those in the IFS treatments were established by non‐inversion tillage: in the first 5 yrs using a Dutzi cultivator or by direct drilling (IFS‐1); from 1994 onwards using either a Vaderstad cultivator (IFS‐2) or a Dutzi cultivator (IFS‐3). These treatments had little or no effect on earthworm populations over the first 3 yrs of the experiment, but after this time total earthworm numbers and biomass were generally greater in the IFS treatments than in the CFS. Individual earthworm species (determined from 1995 onwards) differed in their response to the different farming systems. Numbers of Allolobophora chlorotica, Lumbricus festivus, L. rubellus and L. terrestris averaged over all years were significantly greater in IFS‐3 than in CFS, with densities in IFS‐2 nearly always intermediate and not significantly different from either extreme. Average treatment differences for other species were not significant, although in most years numbers of Aporrectodea longa, Lumbricus castaneus and Octolasion spp. were greatest in IFS‐3, with IFS‐2 similar to or less than CFS. There were no consistent differences between treatments for Aporrectodea caliginosa and A. rosea. Tillage method and the number of crop establishment passes were probably the main factors affecting earthworm populations, although the abundance and distribution of some species may also have been influenced by the amount of soil organic matter. During the period 1995–2000,13 species of earthworms were recorded from the site with A. caliginosa and Al. chlorotica the dominant species. These and other species which normally live in temporary burrows close to the soil surface formed about 80% of the total earthworms extracted, with the larger deep burrowing species, such as A. longa and L. terrestris, representing <20% of the total catch. Species diversity was consistently greater in the Dutzi‐based integrated system (IFS‐3) than in either the Vaderstad‐based integrated system (IFS‐2) or the conventional system (CFS). It is suggested that knowledge of the species composition of earthworm communities is essential in order to properly anticipate the likely impact of modified farming practices on earthworm populations. Careful consideration of the specific machine(s) used for tillage operations may also be required.  相似文献

Field surveys of the distribution of mayfly nymphs suggest that Stenonema femoratum are more acid-sensitive than Leptophlebia cupida. To assess whether this apparent difference in sensitivity of nymphs is reflected in differences in the degree of whole-body loss of [Na], [Cl], [Ca] or [K] under laboratory conditions, we exposed nymphs of both species to low pH for 96–192 h in soft water ([Ca] = 0.1 mM). Although mortality and loss of whole-body [Na] and [Cl] occurred in both species at pH 3.5, unexpectedly they were considerably greater in L. cupida than in S. femoratum. Ion loss was not size related within the range of nymphal weights used (2–14 mg dry wt) for S. femoratum. Exposure to the environmentally more common pH 4.5 had no effect on whole-body [Na] and [Cl] or on mortality in either species. However, in L. cupida, molting by nymphs increased at both pH 3.5 and 4.5. A decrease in whole-body [Ca] occurred, and the loss of whole-body [Na] and [Ca] at pH 3.5 appeared to cease following the period of molting. In S. femoratum no molting or Ca loss occurred and whole-body [Na] and [Cl] decreased between 96 and 192 h exposures.  相似文献
