Threat superiority effects describe the reaction time advantage for locating threatening objects in a visual search paradigm, compared to locating visually similar non-threatening objects. They are widely reported for threats of both natural (snakes and spiders) and man-made (guns and knives) origins. Across two experiments, the current study contrasts threat superiority effects for natural and man-made targets. When targets are not depicted held, snakes and spiders tended to exhibit larger threat superiority effects, and were searched for with additional caution, than were guns and knives. When snakes and spiders were depicted held and weapons wielded, systematic differences between the natural and man-made threats disappeared. This means the advantage for threats of natural origin observed when all targets were depicted not held may be attributable to differences in animation – snakes and spiders are alive and may strike at any time if in your vicinity, whereas a weapon can only inflict harm if wielded. From these data there is no evidence that evolved visual sensitivities to the basic shapes of venomous animals support faster detection and response times to these animals than can occur to targets such as guns and knives, whose shapes must be learned. The selection pressures that led to the evolution of such sensitivities (observable even in infancy) may therefore lie in protecting young children and babies from envenomation, before they even have the cognitive capacity to understand the dangers that snakes and spiders pose.  相似文献

Antibody microarrays have enormous potential for becoming a tool that will allow, at the protein level, the type of global characterization of molecular mixtures that DNA microarrays already make possible at the RNA and DNA level. However, the much higher complexity of proteins both in terms of their sheer number and their structural and biochemical diversity necessitates an even more sophisticated analysis process. General principles of information processing by chemical-based biomolecular systems (pseudobiological information processing paradigm) are discussed. These principles include very large scale parallelism of information processing, high behavioral complexity, complementarity of information features, self-organization, and multilevel architecture. Proteome analysis promises to be valuable for the identification of tissue and serum biomarkers associated with human malignancies. In addition, proteome technologies offer the opportunity to analyze protein expression profiles and to analyze the activity of signaling pathways. Many published proteomic studies of human tumor tissue are associated with weaknesses in tumor representativity, sample contamination by nontumor cells and serum proteins. Studies often include a moderate number of tumors which may not be representative of clinical materials. It is therefore very important that biomarkers identified by proteomics are validated in representative tumor materials by other techniques, such as immunohistochemistry. Proteome technologies can be used to identify disease markers in human serum. Tumor derived proteins are present at nanomolar to picomolar concentrations in cancer patient sera, 10(6)-10(9)-fold lower than albumin, and will give rise to correspondingly smaller spots/peaks in protein separations. This leads to the need to prefractionate serum samples before analysis. Despite various pitfalls, proteomic analysis is a promising approach to the identification of biomarkers, and for generation of protein expression profiles that can be analyzed by artificial learning methods for improved diagnosis of human malignancy. Recent advances in the field of proteomic analysis of human tumors are summarized in the present review.  相似文献
