In this study, the performances of GAC adsorption and GAC bioadsorption in terms of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal were investigated with synthetic biologically treated sewage effluent (BTSE), synthetic primary treated sewage effluent (PTSE), real BTSE and real PTSE. The main aims of this study are to verify and compare the efficiency of DOC removal by GAC (adsorption) and acclimatized GAC (bioadsorption). The results indicated that the performance of bioadsorption was significantly better than that of adsorption in all cases, showing the practical use of biological granular activated carbon (BGAC) in filtration process. The most significance was observed at a real PTSE with a GAC dose of 5g/L, having 54% and 96% of DOC removal by adsorption and bioadsorption, respectively. In addition, it was found that GAC adsorption equilibrium was successfully predicted by a hybrid Langmuir-Freundlich model whilst integrated linear driving force approximation (LDFA)+hybrid isotherm model could describe well the adsorption kinetics. Both adsorption isotherm and kinetic coefficients determined by these models will be useful to model the adsorption/bioadsorption process in DOC removal of BGAC filtration system.  相似文献

The present study involves an investigation of various treated fungal biomasses of Aspergillus niger for the removal of thallium from aqueous solutions. Batch pH and kinetic studies were carried out to examine the effects of pH and contact time on the adsorption process. Among various pH values studied, the optimum pH was found to be between 4 and 5. The equilibrium time for Tl adsorption was found to be 6h and the rate of Tl adsorption was rapid in the initial hours. Both Lagergren's pseudo first-order model and Ho's pseudo second-order model well described the reaction kinetics. Batch adsorption experiments conducted at room temperature (22+/-1 degrees C) showed that the adsorption pattern followed the Freundlich isotherm model. Column studies using iron oxide-coated immobilized fungal biomass showed lower adsorption capacities compared to batch studies.  相似文献

Thermodynamic studies on the bioadsorption of Cr(III) onto Agave lechuguilla biomass were conduced. The experimental results at different temperatures were modeled using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model. Both the Freundlich and Langmuir models were found to represent the bioadsorption process. The average adsorption capacities calculated from Freundlich (4.7 mg/g) and Langmuir (14.2 mg/g) isotherms showed A. lechuguilla to be an effective biomass in the removal of Cr(III) from an aqueous solution. Thermodynamic parameters (deltaG0, deltaH0 and deltaS0) determined in the temperature range from 10 to 40 degrees C along with the parameters of the Dubinin-Radushkevick equation support the idea that the binding of Cr(III) may be caused by interactions with functional groups such as carboxyl groups located on the outer surface of the cell tissue of the bioadsorbent.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the production of fungal biomass protein (FBP) in treatment of winery wastewater using microfungi. Three fungal strains, Trichoderma viride WEBL0702, Aspergillus niger WEBL0901 and Aspergillus oryzae WEBL0401, were selected in terms of microbial capability for FBP production and COD reduction. T. viride appeared to be the best strain for FBP production due to high productivity and less nitrogen requirement. More than 5 g/L of fungal biomass was produced in shake fermentation using T. viride without nitrogen addition, and by A. oryzae and A. niger with addition of 0.5-1.0 g/L (NH4)2SO4. The FBP production process corresponded to 84-90% COD reduction of winery wastewater. Fungal biomass contained approximately 36% protein produced by two Aspergillus strains, while biomass produced by T. viride consisted of 19.8% protein. Kinetic study indicated that maximum fungal cell growth could be achieved in 24h for T. viride and 48 h for A. oryzae and A. niger. Current results indicated that it could be feasible to develop a biotechnological treatment process integrated with FBP production from the winery waste streams.  相似文献

Thirty-two fungal species were isolated from a polluted watercourse near the Talkha fertilizer plant, Mansoura Province, Egypt. Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Cunninghamella echinulata and Trichoderma koningii were isolated frequently. On the basis of its frequency, Cunninghamella echinulata was chosen for biosorption studies. Free and immobilized biomass of C. echinulata sequestered ions in this decreasing sequence is: Pb >Cu >Zn. The effects of biomass concentration, pH and time of contact were investigated. The level of ion uptake rose with increasing biomass. The maximum uptake for lead (45 mg/g), copper (20 mg/g) and zinc (18.8 mg/g) occurred at 200 mg/L biomass. The uptake rose with increasing pH up to 4 in the case of Pb and 5 in the case of Cu and Zn. Maximum uptake for all metals was achieved after 15 min. Ion uptake followed the Langmuir adsorption model, permitting the calculation of maximum uptake and affinity coefficients. Treatment of C. echinulata biomass with NaOH improved biosorbent capacity, as did immobilization with alginate. Immobilized biomass could be regenerated readily by treatment with dilute HCl. The biomass-alginate complex efficiently removed Pb, Zn and Cu from polluted water samples. Therefore,Cunninghamella echinulata could be employed either in free or immobilized form as a biosorbent of metal ions in waste water.  相似文献

Fishmeal wastewater, a seafood processing waste, was utilized for production of lactic acid and fungal biomass by Rhizopus oryzae AS 3.254 with the addition of sugars. The 30 g/l exogenous glucose in fishmeal wastewater was superior to starch in view of productivities of lactic acid and fungal biomass, and COD reduction. Fishmeal wastewater can be a replacement for peptone which was the most suitable nitrogen source for lactic acid production among the tested organic or inorganic nitrogen sources. Exogenous NaCl (12 g/l) completely inhibited the production of lactic acid and fungal growth. In the medium of COD 5,000 mg/l fishmeal wastewater with the addition of 30 g/l glucose, the maximum productivity of lactic acid was 0.723 g/l h corresponding to productivity of fungal biomass 0.0925 g/l h, COD reduction 84.9% and total nitrogen removal 50.3% at a fermentation time of 30 h.  相似文献

The potential of Aspergillus niger fungus and Spirogyra sp., a fresh water green algae, was investigated as a biosorbents for removal of reactive dye (Synazol) from its multi component textile wastewater. The results showed that pre-treatment of fungal and algal biomasses with autoclaving increased the removal of dye than pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. The effects of operational parameters (pH, temperature, biomass concentration and time) on dye removal were examined. The results obtained revealed that dried autoclaved biomass of A. niger and Spirogyra sp. exhibited maximum dye removal (88% and 85%, respectively) at pH3, temperature 30 degrees C and 8 gl(-1)(w/v) biomass conc. after 18h contact time. The stability and efficiency of both organisms in the long-term repetitive operation were also investigated. The results showed that the non-viable biomasses possessed high stability and efficiency of dye removal over 3 repeated batches.  相似文献

This study proposed a novel waste utilization bioprocess for production of lactic acid and fungal biomass from waste streams by fungal species of Rhizopus arrhizus 36017 and R. oryzae 2062. The lactic acid and fungal biomass were produced in a single-stage simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process using potato, corn, wheat and pineapple waste streams as production media. R. arrhizus 36017 gave a high lactic acid yield up to 0.94-0.97 g/g of starch or sugars associated with 4-5 g/l of fungal biomass produced, while 17-19 g/l fungal biomass with a lactic acid yield of 0.65-0.76 g/g was produced by the R. oryzae 2062 in 36-48 h fermentation. Supplementation of 2 g/l of ammonium sulfate, yeast extract and peptone stimulated an increase in 8-15% lactic acid yield and 10-20% fungal biomass.  相似文献

In this present work, a kinetic model for biosorption of copper was developed considering the possibility of different forms of functional groups being present on the surface of the biomass prepared from Aspergillus niger. Results showed that metal uptake by A. niger was a mass transfer driven process, requiring only 30min to achieve 70% adsorption efficiency. Copper sorption by A. niger was influenced by the biomass dose, initial metal ion concentration, and pH of the solution. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were used to describe the behavior of the system at different pH. The retention capacity of the biomass was determined at pH 6.0 to be equal to 23.62mg/g of biomass. The pretreatment with formalin improved the uptake of metal ion.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine which citric acid-producing strain of Aspergillus niger utilized wet corn distillers grains most effectively to produce citric acid. METHODS AND RESULTS: Citric acid and biomass production by the fungal strains were analysed on the untreated grains or autoclaved grains using an enzyme assay and a gravimetric method respectively. Fungal citric acid production on the grains was found to occur on the untreated or autoclaved grains. The highest citric acid level on the grains was produced by A. niger ATCC 9142. The autoclaved grains supported less citric acid production by the majority of strains screened. Biomass production by the fungal strains on the untreated or autoclaved grains was quite similar. The highest citric acid yields for A. niger ATCC 9142, ATCC 10577, ATCC 11414, ATCC 12846 and ATCC 26550 were found on the untreated grains. Treatment of the grains had little effect on citric acid yields based on reducing sugars consumed by A. niger ATCC 9029 and ATCC 201122. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible for citric acid-producing strains of A. niger to excrete citric acid on wet corn distillers grains whether the grains are treated or untreated. The most effective citric acid-producing strain of A. niger was ATCC 9142. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The study shows that the ethanol processing co-product wet corn distillers grains could be utilized as a substrate for the commercial production of citric acid by A. niger without treatment of the grains.  相似文献

This research documents the removal of the dye Gris Lanaset G from aqueous solutions by fungal pellets. Adsorption of the dye by dead biomass pellets of Trametes versicolor was determined and compared with dye removal by enzymatic degradation. Six kinetic equations were fitted to the experimental adsorption data obtained. The results indicate that kinetics such as the Elovich equation, which considers that the rate-controlling step is the diffusion of the dye molecules, show the best fit. Nonlinear Langmuir and Freundlich equations were also fitted into the adsorption data, and it can be concluded that the adsorption equilibrium can be interpreted by the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption plays an important role in the process of the elimination of color from textile wastewater, although not all of the elimination is due to this physical process when the microorganism is active. The removal of color (around 90%) with active microorganisms is greater than that obtained with the adsorption process.  相似文献

A preliminary study on the removal of cadmium by nonmetabolizing live biomass of Rhizopus oligosporus from aqueous solution is presented. The equilibrium of the process was in all cases well described by the Langmuir sorption isotherm, suggesting that the process was a chemical, equilibrated and saturable mechanism which reflected the predominantly site-specific mechanism on the cell surface. A curve of Scatchard transformation plots reflected the covalent nature of Cd2+ adsorption by the cells. The maximum cadmium uptake capacities were 34.25 mg/g for immobilized cells and 17.09 mg/g for free cells. Some factorial experiments in shake flasks were performed in order to investigate the effect of different initial cadmium concentrations and biomass concentrations on the equilibrium. Experimental results showed a reverse trend of the influence of the immobilized and free biomass concentration on the cadmium specific uptake capacity. The immobilized cells had a higher specific cadmium uptake capacity with increasing biomass concentrations compared to free cells. In a bioreactor, the cadmium uptake capacity of immobilized cells (qmax = 30.1–37.5 mg/g) was similar to that observed in shake flask experiments (qmax = 34.25 mg/g) whereas with free cells the bioreactor qmax of 4.8–13.0 mg/g; was much lower than in shake flasks (qmax = 17.09 mg/g), suggesting that cadmium biosorption by immobilized cells of R. oligosporus might be further improved in bigger reactors. EDAX and transmission electron microscopic experiments on the fungal biomass indicated that the presence of Cd2+ sequestrated to the cell wall was due to bioadsorption.  相似文献

Olive oil waste as a biosorbent for heavy metals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sourcing of novel, inexpensive biowastes such as olive mill waste (OMW) from the two-decanter olive-oil-production system offers potential for the removal of metal ions by biosorption. OMW can be used in repeated regeneration cycles for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The metal ions sequestered can be released in an acid solution until the concentration of these metal ions reaches a level where conventional methods can be used to provide economic metal recovery and potential revenue generation. The ability of this biomass to adsorb more than one metal ion from solution may increase its potential for application in the wastewater industry since the majority of industrial effluents contain more than one metallic species. Metal ion adsorption was found to increase with the speed of agitation and at an optimum pH value of between 4 and 7.  相似文献

The environmental benefits derived from using citric acid in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated sewage sludge have made it promising as an extracting agent in the chemical extraction process. At present, citric acid is produced commercially by fermentation of sucrose using mutant strains of Aspergillus niger (A. niger), and chemical synthesis. In recent years, various carbohydrates and wastes (such as pineapple wastes) have been considered experimentally, to produce citric acid by A. niger. This study investigated the potential of using A. niger fermented raw liquid from pineapple wastes as a source of citric acid, in extracting chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) from anaerobically digested sewage sludge. Results of the study revealed that metal removal efficiencies varied with pH, forms of metals in sludge and contact time. At pH approaching 4, and contact time of 11 days, A. niger fermented liquid seemed to remove all Cr and Zn while removing 94% of Ni. Moreover, chemical speciation studies revealed that metals which are predominantly in the exchangeable and oxidizable phases seemed to exhibit ease of leachability (e.g., Zn). The by-products of the process such as pineapple pulp and mycelium which are rich in protein, can still be used as animal feed. It can be said therefore that this novel process provides a sustainable way of managing contaminated sewage sludge.  相似文献

A new technology of transforming ferulic acid, which was from waste residue of rice bran oil, into vanillin was developed by a combination of fungal strains Aspergillus niger CGMCC0774 and Pycnoporus cinnabarinus CGMCC1115. Various concentrations of ferulic acid were compared, and the highest yield reached 2.2 g l(-1) of vanillic acid by A. niger CGMCC0774 in a 25 l fermenter when concentration of ferulic acid was 4 g l(-1). The filtrate of A. niger CGMCC0774 culture was concentrated and vanillic acid in the filtrate was bio-converted into vanillin by P. cinnabarinus CGMCC1115. The yield of vanillin reached 2.8 g l(-1) when 5 g l(-1) of glucose and 25 g of HZ802 resin were supplemented in the bioconversion medium. The 13C isotope analysis indicated that delta13C(PDB) of vanillin prepared was much different from chemically synthesized vanillin.  相似文献

A strain of Aspergillus niger isolated from a metal-contaminated soil was able to grow in the presence of cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, and unusually high levels of nickel on solid (8.0 mM) and in liquid (6.5 mM) media. This fungus removed >98% of the nickel from liquid medium after 100 h of growth but did not remove the other metals, as determined by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy. Experiments with non-growing, live fungal biomass showed that nickel removal was not due to biosorption alone, as little nickel was bound to the biomass at the pH values tested. Furthermore, when the protonophore carbonyl cyanide p-(trifluoremetoxy) phenyl hydrazone (FCCP) was added to the actively growing fungus nickel removal was inhibited, supporting the hypothesis that energy metabolism is essential for metal removal. Analytical electron microscopy of thin-sectioned fungal biomass revealed that metal removed from the broth was localized in the form of small rectangular crystals associated with the cell walls and also inside the cell. X-ray and electron diffraction analysis showed that these crystals were nickel oxalate dihydrate.  相似文献

Biosorption of pentachlorophenol from aqueous solutions by a fungal biomass   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study focuses on the use of non-viable Aspergillus niger biomass, for the biosorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) from aqueous solutions. Various forms of the biomass-autoclaved and chemically conditioned, were tested for their potential in the removal of PCP from aqueous solutions. It was found that PCP removal was pH dependent; PCP removal decreased with the increase in pH for all type of biomass, except for cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) biomass. For CTAB biomass, a near complete removal of PCP was observed at all pHs. Therefore, CTAB biomass was used in further studies. PCP removal was rapid, with an equilibrium time of 2h. The rate of adsorption kinetics was well described by a pseudo-second order model. Isotherm models of the type one and two parameter models were found to fit the isotherm data. PCP biosorption was found to be exothermic in nature; the amount of PCP sorbed decreased with an increase in temperature. Desorption was carried out using deionized water, dilute HCl and dilute NaOH, and it was found that most of the PCP was irreversibly bound to the biomass. The addition of inorganic salts did not affect the removal of PCP from aqueous solutions. Among the surface functional groups present on the biomass, carboxyl, amide and hydroxyl groups seem to have played a role in PCP biosorption. It was concluded that CTAB treated biomass was an excellent adsorbent for the removal of PCP from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The bioadsorption of metal ions using microorganisms is an attractive technology for the recovery of rare metal ions as well as removal of toxic heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. In initial attempts, microorganisms with the ability to accumulate metal ions were isolated from nature and intracellular accumulation was enhanced by the overproduction of metal-binding proteins in the cytoplasm. As an alternative, the cell surface design of microorganisms by cell surface engineering is an emerging strategy for bioadsorption and recovery of metal ions. Cell surface engineering was firstly applied to the construction of a bioadsorbent to adsorb heavy metal ions for bioremediation. Cell surface adsorption of metal ions is rapid and reversible. Therefore, adsorbed metal ions can be easily recovered without cell breakage, and the bioadsorbent can be reused or regenerated. These advantages are suitable for the recovery of rare metal ions. Actually, the cell surface display of a molybdate-binding protein on yeast led to the enhanced adsorption of molybdate, one of the rare metal ions. An additional advantage is that the cell surface display system allows high-throughput screening of protein/peptide libraries owing to the direct evaluation of the displayed protein/peptide without purification and concentration. Therefore, the creation of novel metal-binding protein/peptide and engineering of microorganisms towards the recovery of rare metal ions could be simultaneously achieved.  相似文献

Heavy metals can be adsorbed by living or non-living biomass. Submerged aquatic plants can be used for the removal of heavy metals. In this paper, lead, zinc, and copper adsorption properties of Ceratophyllum demersum (Coontail or hornwort) were investigated and results were compared with other aquatic submerged plants. Data obtained from the initial adsorption studies indicated that C. demersum was capable of removing lead, zinc, and copper from solution. The metal biosorption was fast and equilibrium was attained within 20 min. Data obtained from further batch studies conformed well to the Langmuir Model. Maximum adsorption capacities (q(max)) onto C. demersum were 6.17 mg/g for Cu(II), 13.98 mg/g for Zn(II) and 44.8 mg/g for Pb(II). Kinetics of adsorption of zinc, lead and copper were analysed and rate constants were derived for each metal. It was found that the overall adsorption process was best described by pseudo second-order kinetics. The results showed that this submerged aquatic plant C. demersum can be successfully used for heavy metal removal under dilute metal concentration.  相似文献
