Investigations on the sites of ent-kaur-16-ene (ent-kaurene) biosynthesis were conducted with cell-free extracts from several excised parts of 10-, 13-, and 16-d-old tall and dwarf pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings. [14C]Mevalonic acid was incorporated into ent-kaurene in cell-free extracts from young developing leaves and elongating internodes of tall (`Alaska') and dwarf (`Progress No.9') pea seedlings at all three stages of development. ent-Kaurene biosynthesis also occurred readily in cell-free extracts from shoot tips, petioles, and stipules near the young elongating internodes. The ent-kaurene-synthesizing activity found in young developing tissues declined as tissues matured. Little or no activity was detectable in enzyme extracts from cotyledons and root tips at different stages. In light grown tall pea internodes ent-kaurene-synthesizing activity was low as they began to elongate, reached a maximum when the internodes reached about 2 cm in length and declined as they matured. Activity in extracts of dwarf shoot tips and internodes was generally lower than in equivalent tall plants, but the activity in dwarf leaves and stipules was somewhat higher than in tall plants. With the exception of root tips, there is a strong correlation between growth potential of a tissue and the rate of ent-kaurene biosynthesis in extracts from that tissue.  相似文献

Growth strategies of the two varieties of Arrhenatherum elatius were studied. The two varieties studied were: onion couch, which produces bulbous swollen internodes and is an arable weed of local importance, whilst tall oat-grass is more widely distributed. An experiment in which the two varieties were grown at different densities in monoculture and were harvested at intervals, highlighted various aspects of the competitive relation between the two varieties and an annual crop. Significant and consistent differences were found between the two varieties for most of the attributes measured during the two growing seasons. Tall oat-grass allocated a greater proportion of its whole shoot dry weight to producing vigorous aerial tillers, whereas onion couch allocated a greater proportion of its whole shoot dry weight to the development of basal internodes. The regulation of tiller number as a reaction to increasing density in tall oat-grass is achieved by high tiller mortality, whereas in onion couch, this stress is expressed by small tiller mortality. Growth pattern shown by the two varieties of A. elatius reflect the adaptive strategies evolved by them in two different habitats and are due to the genetic factors which determine the presence or absence of their characteristic basal internodes.  相似文献

Sucrose synthesis/accumulation in sugarcane is a complex process involving many genes and regulatory sequences that control biochemical events in source–sink tissues. Among these, sucrose synthase (SuSy), sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), soluble acid (SAI) and cell wall (CWI) invertases are important. Expression of these enzymes was compared in an early (CoJ64) and late (BO91) maturing sugarcane variety using end‐point and qRT‐PCR. Quantitative RT‐PCR at four crop stages revealed high CWI expression in upper internodes of CoJ64, which declined significantly in both top and bottom internodes with maturity. In BO91, CWI expression was high in top and bottom internodes and declined significantly only in top internodes as the crop matured. Overall, CWI expression was higher in CoJ64 than in BO91. During crop growth, there was no significant change in SPS expression in bottom internodes in CoJ64, whereas in BO91 it decreased significantly. Apart from a significant decrease in expression of SuSy in mature bottom internodes of BO91, there was no significant change. Similar SAI expression was observed with both end‐point and RT‐PCR, except for significantly increased expression in top internodes of CoJ64 with maturity. SAI, being a major sucrose hydrolysing enzyme, was also monitored with end‐point PCR expression in internode tissues of CoJ64 and BO91, with higher expression of SAI in BO91 at early crop stages. Enzyme inhibitors, e.g. manganese chloride (Mn++), significantly suppressed expression of SAI in both early‐ and late‐maturing varieties. Present findings enhance understanding of critical sucrose metabolic gene expression in sugarcane varieties differing in content and time of peak sucrose storage. Thus, through employing these genes, improvement of sugarcane sucrose content is possible.  相似文献

To study the importance for final grain size in wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) of assimilate supply and the storage capacity of the grain, two field experiments were done. In 1976 nitrogen was applied in the range from none to 180 kg ha-1, part of the crop was thinned, and the top halves of some ears of the short variety Hobbit and of the tall variety Maris Huntsman were removed soon after anthesis. In 1977 ears of Maris Huntsman were halved 5 days after anthesis or at 30 days after anthesis when grain volume was maximum. Thinning the crop from 360 to 180 ear-bearing shoots m-2 30 days before anthesis increased the number of grains per ear, except in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser, but did not increase grain size, grain dry weight per ear or total dry weight per culm. Removing the upper half of ears of Hobbit 5 days after anthesis increased dry weight per grain, but when this treatment was applied to Maris Huntsman either 5 days after anthesis in 1976 and 1977, or when grain volume was maximal in 1977, the grains failed to increase in dry weight. Non-grain dry weight of both varieties was increased by halving the ear. In both varieties the maximum volume of grains in halved ears was larger than in intact ears. Grain dry weight increased relatively less than volume after halving the ear of Hobbit, and the decrease in volume up to maturity was greater in halved than intact ears of both varieties. The larger grain volume in halved ears of Maris Huntsman in 1977 was associated with more endosperm cells.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted during 2004 and 2005 to determine the effect of sowing seeds from plants with multiple heads and seeds from single headed plants of sunflower on seed yield, head characteristics and oil content of three widely grown open pollinated varieties (Funtua, Record and Isaanka) in the humid forest—savanna transition zone which is outside the current growing areas with a view to improving stability and sunflower productivity in this region. Seeds from multiple headed plants produced plants that flowered and matured 2–3 days later than plants from single headed plants. Apart from days to flowering in 2004, number of days to maturity and plant height were affected independently by variety and seed source factors. However, the seeds from single headed plants produced plants that recorded significantly (P < 0.01) higher head weight, head diameter, achene weight and number per head than plants from seeds of plants with multiple heads. Seed source had little effect on sunflower seed yield and oil content. However, Funtua produced significantly (P < 0.05) high seed yield (1956.0 kg ha?1 ± 76.06) when seeds from plants with multiple heads were sown, while Isaanka recorded comparatively high seed yield from seeds of plants from either multiple (1221.0 kg ha?1 ± 165.90) or single heads (1388.0 kg ha?1 ± 135.84) and Record (1201.0 kg ha?1 ± 96.97) when seeds from single headed plants were sown. Therefore, it is recommended that prospective sunflower growers who wish to cultivate Isaanka, can sow seeds from either the multiple or single head and preferably the multiple head for Funtua, and single head for Record.  相似文献

A late (SR 52) and an early (N × K) variety were grown, with irrigation, on well fertilized soil at three sites, Chiredzi (altitude 420 m), Henderson (1260 m) and Grasslands (1620 m). Mean incoming radiation was similar at all sites, while mean temperature decreased as altitude increased. Final total and grain dry weights were greatest at Henderson, and those of SR 52 exceeded those of N × K, although not greatly at Chiredzi. Initially, leaf area index (L) decreased with increase in altitude, but plants flowered later as altitude increased, and L at the time of flowering was greatest at Henderson. L at flowering was greater in SR 52 than in N × K, though only slightly so at Chiredzi. Leaves withered sooner after flowering at Chiredzi and Grasslands than at Henderson, but leaves of the two varieties withered at about the same time after flowering at each site. During most of the vegetative phase the efficiency of the leaves and crop growth rate (C) increased with decrease in altitude, and were greater in N × K than in SR 52. More dry matter was accumulated after flowering at Henderson than at the other sites, and more by SR 52 than by N × K at Henderson and Grasslands, but not at Chiredzi. Leaf area duration (D) after flowering was greater at Henderson than elsewhere, and greater in SR 52 than in N × K, except at Chiredzi. After flowering leaf efficiency (dry weight increase ÷D) was least at Henderson and greatest at Grasslands, but differed little between varieties at each site. The fraction in the grain of the dry matter accumulated after flowering decreased with increase in altitude and was greater in SR 52 than in N × K.  相似文献

Maize was grown in two densities, 2–47 or 4–94 plants m-2, and the following treatments imposed: untreated, plants partly defoliated 51 days after sowing, and alternate plants in a row partly defoliated 44 days after sowing. Plants flowered about 82 days after sowing. Leaf area was decreased by 60–64% by defoliation on day 51. Defoliation resulted in decreases in grain yield and grain number of 6–17%, though when alternate plants were defoliated in the higher density there was a substantial decrease in yield and number of grains in defoliated plants, which was largely offset by an increase in adjacent intact plants. When plants were defoliated on day 51 subsequent growth in leaf area was similar to, and that in leaf weight nearly as large as that in untreated plants, while increase in stem weight was substantially less than in untreated plants. By the time of flowering untreated and defoliated plots differed by c. 30% in leaf area. Increments of dry matter after flowering differed by c. 15% between untreated and defoliated plots. The fraction of these increments which entered the grain was c. 90% in both untreated and defoliated plots. When alternate plants in the row were partly defoliated on day 44 their subsequent increase in leaf area was probably 5–16% less than that of the adjacent intact plants. Increments of dry matter after flowering of plots with alternate plants defoliated were 93–95 % of those of untreated plots; leaf efficiency after flowering was slightly greater than in untreated plots. The fraction of the dry matter increment after flowering which entered the grain was c. 88 % in both intact and defoliated plants of the small density, but was 94% in intact plants and 86% in defoliated plants of the large density.  相似文献

The rates of photosynthesis and patterns of translocation of 14C from the flag leaves of tall and semi-dwarf wheat varieties, with and without awns, were compared in a field experiment. The rates of photosynthesis of the awnless varieties fell during the 14 days after anthesis but those of the awned varieties did not change. Wide differences in translocation pattern of 14C supplied at anthesis were also found between varieties, but the differences in distribution pattern of 14C supplied 14 days later were less. At anthesis, the high yielding semi-dwarf selection translocated most carbohydrate to the ears and awned selections least. It is suggested that varietal differences in translocation pattern are determined by differences in the capacity of the grain to store carbohydrate.  相似文献

The uptake of 137Cs and 90Sr by six varieties of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) was compared in field trials on land contaminated by the Chernobyl accident. All the experimental varieties are officially adopted for agricultural use in Belarus and are used in large-scale production. Under identical conditions of nutrition, the productivity of the varieties varied significantly by a factor of 1.3. The extent of 137Cs and 90Sr accumulation by wheat grain, quantified as the concentration ratio, differed between the varieties by as much as a factor of 1.6, for both radionuclides. There was a significant linear positive correlation between the 90Sr activity concentration in grain and straw, and the calcium concentration. The correlation between 137Cs and potassium was not significant. The results suggest that certain varieties of spring wheat used in normal agricultural practice accumulate less 137Cs and 90Sr into grain than others. Some spring wheat varieties accumulated relatively less 137Cs, but did not accumulate less 90Sr. One variety, Quattro, had a significantly lower uptake of both 90Sr (for grain) and 137Cs (for both grain and straw) than that of the other varieties tested. The reduction efficiency achieved by the use of these varieties, however, is not as high as that achieved by soil amelioration techniques in the past. Nevertheless, since there are no additional costs or production losses associated with these varieties, their use in the contaminated areas is worth considering as a simple, practical, and effective contribution to reducing the uptake of both 90Sr and 137Cs and allowing farmers to produce food-grade grain.  相似文献

Field trials under rain-fed conditions at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia were conducted to study the comparative leaf photosynthesis, growth, yield, and nutrient use efficiency in two groups of cassava cultivars representing tall (large leaf canopy and shoot biomass) and short (small leaf canopy and shoot biomass) plant types. Using the standard plant density (10,000 plants ha−1), tall cultivars produced higher shoot biomass, larger seasonal leaf area indices (LAIs) and greater final storage root yields than the short cultivars. At six months after planting, yields were similar in both plant types with the short ones tending to form and fill storage roots at a much earlier time in their growth stage. Root yield, shoot and total biomass in all cultivars were significantly correlated with seasonal average LAI. Short cultivars maintained lower than optimal LAI for yield. Seasonal P N, across cultivars, was 12% greater in short types, with maximum values obtained in Brazilian genotypes. This difference in P N was attributed to nonstomatal factors (i.e., anatomical/biochemical mesophyll characteristics). Compared with tall cultivars, short ones had 14 to 24 % greater nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in terms of storage root production. The lesser NUE in tall plants was attributed mainly to more total nutrient uptake than in short cultivars. It was concluded that short-stemmed cultivars are superior in producing dry matter in their storage roots per unit nutrient absorbed, making them advantageous for soil fertility conservation while their yields approach those in tall types. It was recommended that breeding programs should focus on selection for more efficient short- to medium-stemmed genotypes since resource-limited cassava farmers rarely apply agrochemicals nor recycle residual parts of the crop back to the soil. Such improved short types were expected to surpass tall types in yields when grown at higher than standard plant population densities (>10,000 plants ha−1) in order to maximize irradiance interception. Below a certain population density (<10,000 plants ha−1), tall cultivars should be planted. Findings were discussed in relation to cultivation and cropping systems strategies for water and nutrient conservation and use efficiencies under stressful environments as well as under predicted water deficits in the tropics caused by trends in global climate change. Cassava is expected to play a major role in food and biofuel production due to its high photosynthetic capacity and its ability to conserve water as compared to major cereal grain crops. The interdisciplinary/interinstitutions research reported here, including an associated release of a drought-tolerant, short-stem cultivar that was eagerly accepted by cassava farmers, reflects well on the productivity of the CIAT international research in Cali, Colombia.  相似文献

A germplasm collecting trip to Malawi was launched during March/April 1979, resulting in the collection of 260 traditional cultivars of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum), 11 intermediate forms, and 6 accessions of wild Pennisetum. Most of the cultivated pearl millet samples were obtained from the hot lowlands of the lower Shire Valley, with a few samples from the cool highlands of Mulanje and Mangochi. A mixture of different types that varied in plant height, maturity, and spike characters were observed in farmers’ fields. In the south, early types with loose, thin, cylindrical spikes and in the north, late-maturing types producing many tillers with stout spikes having long bristles were found. The grain is used to prepare a thick porridge, nsima, or to brew local beer, chimera. When the collection was evaluated at ICRISAT Center, Patancheru, considerable variation was observed for days to 50% flowering and plant height, but not for spike and grain characters. During the rainy season, the majority of the accessions flowered early (70 days), grew very tall (250 cm), and produced thin (22 mm), short (22 cm) spikes with small, obovate to elliptical, corneous grey grain. In the postrainy season, most of the accessions flowered a week earlier accompanied by reduction in plant height. Millet germplasm from Malawi belongs to the race typhoides and serves as a good source of genes for earliness, tillering, and corneous endosperm.  相似文献

A new species of Phaius (Orchidaceae), Phaius hekouensis Tsukaya, M. Nakajima & S. K. Wu, from Ma Chang Village, Kunming, China is described and illustrated. Phaius hekouensis is easily distinguishable from other members of the genus Phaius, having a combination of characteristics such as a tall erect, stem with elongated internodes, and large, yellow flowers with a lip having a short spur at the base and free from the column. The original habitat was near the border between China and Vietnam, suggesting high species biodiversity in this border region.  相似文献

We have identified and characterized a FLOWERING PROMOTING FACTOR 1(FPF1) gene from tobacco (NtFPF1). Over-expression of NtFPF1 leads to early flowering in the day-neutral tobacco Nicotiana tabacum cv. Hicks, and under inductive photoperiods also in the short-day Nicotiana tabacum cv. Hicks Maryland Mammoth (MM) tobacco and the long-day plant Nicotiana sylvestris. N. sylvestris wild-type plants remained in the rosette stage and never flowered under non-inductive short-days, whereas 35S::NtFPF1 transgenic plants bolted but did not flower. However, if treated with gibberellins, transgenic N. sylvestrisplants flowered much faster under non-inductive short days than corresponding wild type plants, indicating an additive effect of gibberellins and the NtFPF1 protein in flowering time control. The day-neutral wild type cv. Hicks and the short-day cv. Hicks MM plants exhibit an initial rosette stage, both under short- and long-days. In the transgenic lines, this rosette stage was completely abolished. Wild-type plants of cv. Hicks MM never flowered under long days; however, all transgenic lines over-expressing NtFPF1 flowered under this otherwise non-inductive photoperiod.  相似文献

A comparative field study of caudatum and arachnoideum, the two Pteridium aquilinum varieties of the caudatum subspecies known to grow in the neotropics, was performed in a montane savanna habitat of the Venezuelan Andes that was affected by wildfire. Frond size, ramet density and spatial distribution, blade and rhizome biomass, and frond elongation and expansion rates were measured in separate, isolated stands each containing only one bracken variety and covering approximately the same area (540 m2). In addition to clearly discernible morphological differences, caudatum and arachnoideum were found to possess distinct features: caudatum tends to develop open stands of relatively shorter blades of 76.6±0.89 cm (±SE) of rachis length and lower ramet density (1.6 fronds m-2, max.=7 fronds m-2) whereas arachnoideum grows into longer, more expanded fronds 124±1.6 cm tall and significantly higher ramet density (5.1 fronds/m2, max.=14.6 fronds m-2). The sum of aerial and underground biomass was found to be notably larger for arachnoideum (8522±614 Kg/ha) than for caudatum (1929±131 Kg ha-1) in stands growing under the same habitat conditions. Therefore the spatial distribution of arachnoideum appeared considerably more compact than that of caudatum. Blade growth rates and development time were also very different. Newly emerged caudatum croziers developed into mature blades within 42 to 48 days following an inverse exponential curve whereas arachnoideum blades required 70 to 75 days to reach maturity following a linear development. All the above dissimilarities are interpreted as the hitherto unreported indication of diverging growth strategies of two cohabitant bracken varieties following fire.  相似文献

Summary The spikelets of the grass Calamovilfa longifolia (Hook) Scribn. are one flowered and the dispersal unit is composed of a caryopsis (3.5 mm long and 0.9 mm wide) enclosed in lemma and palea. The highest germination of caryopses and emergence of seedlings occurred from 1–2 cm depths and seedling emergence decreased with increasing depth of burial. The maximum depth of sand from which a seedling can emerge is about 8 cm. Seedlings emerging from deep locations had first internodes which were more elongated than those of seedlings from more shallow plantings. Coleoptile lengths of seedlings from shallow or deeply buried caryopses were similar.  相似文献

该文在玻璃温室内的遮阴环境下,采用盆播方法研究了辽东栎种子特征(大小和种皮)和播种深度(0、3、6、10 cm)对种子萌发和幼苗生长的影响。结果表明:(1)辽东栎大种子萌发率、萌发速率、萌发值和萌发指数在所有播种深度均高于小种子。其中非去皮种子萌发率、萌发速率和萌发指数在0 cm播种深度的不同大小种子间差异显著,去皮种子所有萌发参数在6和10 cm播种深度的不同大小种子间均差异显著;去皮可促进大种子萌发,但抑制小种子萌发;不同大小种子所有萌发参数均在0 cm播种深度最大,在10cm播种深度最小。(2)不论有无种皮,大种子萌发幼苗的叶片数、单株叶面积、总干物质质量和根冠比在所有播种深度均大于小种子萌发幼苗;去皮种子萌发幼苗的株高、基径、叶片数、单株叶面积和总干物质质量在所有播种深度均不同程度地小于非去皮种子萌发幼苗,但前者根冠比在0、3、6 cm播种深度大于后者;随着播种深度增大,幼苗株高、叶片数、单株叶面积、总干物质质量和根冠比等生长参数均呈减小趋势,但基径随播种深度增大而增大。  相似文献

Scrub mangrove wetlands colonize the intertidal zone of fossil lagoons located in carbonate continental margins along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. These unique ecological types were investigated in October, 1994, by locating transects in several mangrove forests along the Caribbean coast of the peninsula. Four species of mangrove occurred at these sites including Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, Conocarpus erecta. This is one of the first examples of a species rich scrub forest. The mangroves fell into three height categories: short scrub less than 1.5 m, tall scrub to 3.0 m, and basin forests between 4.5 and 6 m. Average height, diameter (dbh), basal area, and complexity index generally increased from short scrub to basin forests. Basal area, ranged from 0.16 m2 ha–1 in a short scrub forest intermixed with Cladium jamaicense to 12.9 m2 ha–1 in a basin forest. Density ranged from 1520 trees ha–1 to over 25,000 trees ha–1 in a short scrub forest dominated by R. mangle. The complexity index ranged from 0.01 to 8.3. Height, dbh, basal area, and complexity index were positively related. A number of trees were growing as sprouts from larger downed trunks, suggesting that hurricanes, such as Gilbert that occurred in 1988, are important in controlling the structure of these forests. These forests appear isolated from the sea, but are influenced by groundwater exchange occurring at the land-margin zone.  相似文献

An improved 13C-density-labeling method was used to study cell wall synthesis in rapidly expanding, slowly expanding and recently mature internodes of Nitella translucens var axillaris (A.Br.) R.D.W. As cells matured, the rate of wall synthesis slowed and the deposition of cellulose microfibrils changed from a predominantly transverse direction in the primary wall of rapidly expanding internodes to a helicoidal array in the secondary wall of mature internodes. The secondary wall was characterized by relatively higher rates of cellulose synthesis and lower rates of pectin synthesis than the primary wall. The synthesis of xyloglucan also decreased markedly at the transition to secondary wall synthesis, while the synthesis of mannose-rich hemicellulose increased. Even though structural differences were striking between the primary and secondary walls of Nitella, compositional differences between the two types of wall were quantitative rather than qualitative. Vegetative Xanthium plants grown under noninductive conditions were marked along the stem with India ink and photographed during three successive days. The relative elemental rates of stem elongation [d(dX/dt)/dX] were estimated for 18 plants between 15 and 18 plastochrons. On the average, only the 8.0 cm terminal part of the stem was elongating in this group of plants. Young internodes were elongating at constant relative elemental rates ([d(dX/dt)/dX] was about 0.2 days–1); nodal portions of the stem beteween two young internodes were not elongating. Internodes longer than 2 cm displayed an acropetal pattern of elongation in which the basal part of an internode stopped elongating and matured first and the apical portion last. The pattern of elongation of the stem could be best approximated to a set of cascading waterfalls with declining plateaus in the direction of the water flow. The acropetal pattern of individual internode elongation observed in Xanthium was similar to those reported for Helianthus and Phaseolus internode growth.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: West African sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) varieties are generally highly photoperiod-sensitive, which is a necessary adaptation to the variable onset date of the rainy season and the variable dates of sowing in the savannah zone. Depending on sowing date, plants can produce from 12 to >40 leaves on the main culm, with height varying from 1 m to more than 5 m. The present study aimed to better understand the complex phenology of these variables. METHODS: A 2-year series of monthly sowings of three West African sorghum varieties was conducted near Bamako, Mali. Drought stress was avoided by supplemental irrigation. Rate of initiation of primordia at the stem apex was recorded, together with rate of leaf emergence and increase in plant height. KEY RESULTS: Leaf initiation and appearance rates (plastochron(-1) and phyllochron(-1)) were constant for a given sowing date in cases where less than 20 leaves were produced (generally observed with late sowing dates). In contrast, rates were bilinear for early sowing dates, for which plants produced more than 20 leaves. The secondary rates, which occurred from the 20th leaf onwards, were only half of the initial rate. Plastochron and phyllochron showed large variations among sowing dates, and were correlated with the rate of plant height increase. The initial plastochron and phyllochron were positively correlated with soil temperature and negatively correlated with both day length and day-to-day change of day length prevailing at plant emergence, but these factors explained only half of the variation observed. CONCLUSIONS: Although they belong to different genetic groups and have different height and photoperiod sensitivity, the three varieties studied exhibited similar response patterns of development rates among phenological phases and seasons, with the local landrace showing the greatest variation due to its longer vegetative phase and longer stem internodes. The possible adaptive advantages in African savannah environments of bilinear development rates and the associated limitation in height increase are discussed.  相似文献
