Copepod daily egg production and growth rates in Bahia Magdalena, Mexico   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The hydrography, chlorophyll (Chl) a and egg production of thecopepods Paracalanus parvus (Claus), Acartia lilljeborgii Giesbrecht,Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and Centropages furcatus were estimateddaily between 7 February and 5 March 1998 in Bahía Magdalena,Baja California Sur, México. Temperature was homogeneousthroughout the water column during the study (20°C). Positiveanomalies of the sea surface temperature were recorded 10 monthsbefore and during the sampling period compared with a temperature–timeseries, 1982–1989. Chlorophyll a concentration indicatedoligotrophic conditions with <10 Chl a mg m–2 from15 m depth to the surface during the first half of the study, with a pulse of moderate concentration in the second part. Theegg production of these copepod species was usually suboptimal, and not correlated with Chl concentration or temperature. Eachgenus responded differently to Chl a and to environmental variables. The rate of input of turbulent kinetic energy to the ocean bythe winds, indicated by the cube of the wind speed, was negativelycorrelated to copepod egg production, suggesting that turbulencecan disperse phytoplankton patches and may affect the carboninput to these copepod populations. Turbulence and a previouslong warming event observed several months before the winterseason were probably the most important factors in limitingcopepod production and growth rates.  相似文献

Selectivity-size spectra, clearance and ingestion rates andassimilation efficiencies of Acartia clausi (Copepoda), Peniliaavirostris (Cladocera) and Doliolum denticulatum (Doliolida)from Blanes Bay (Catalan Sea, NW Mediterranean) were evaluatedin grazing experiments over a wide range of food concentrations(0.02–8.8 mm3 L–1 plankton assemblages from BlanesBay, grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels). Acartiaclausi reached the highest grazing coefficients for large algae>70 µm (longest linear extension), P. avirostris forintermediate food sizes between 15 and 70 µm, and D. denticulatumfor small sizes from 2.5 to 15 µm. Penilia avirostrisand D. denticulatum acted as passive filter-feeders. Acartiaclausi gave some evidence for a supplementary raptorial feedingmode. Effective food concentration (EFC) decreased linearlywith increasing nutrient enrichment for D. denticulatum andfollowed domed curves for A. clausi and for P. avirostris withmaximum values at intermediate and high enrichment levels, respectively.Clearance rates of crustacean species showed curvilinear responseswith narrow modal ranges to increasing food concentration. Clearancerates of D. denticulatum increased abruptly and levelled intoa plateau at low food concentrations. Mean clearance rates were13.9, 25.5 and 64.1 mL ind.–1 day–1, respectively. No clearance could be detected for A. clausi at food concentrations<0.1 mm3 L–1 and for P. avirostris at food concentrations  相似文献

The extent of chlorophyll (Chi) a degradation into colorlessproducts by the copepod Acartia clausi was determined by measuringgut fluorescence prior to fecal pellet production. The efficiencyof pigment degradation of animals fed at different concentrationsof Thalassiosira weiss-fiogii varied between 30.56 and 94.05%,and the quantity of pigments lost during gut passage was directlyrelated to total ingestion. The role of feeding history in pigmentdestruction was tested. The fraction of ingested Chi a degradedby copepods acclimated to a high food concentration (15 ng Chla ml–1) was greater than the fraction degraded by thoseacclimated to a low food concentration (1.5 ng Chl a ml–1).The percentage of ingested Chl a that A.clausi transformed intofluorometrically undetected compounds was not constant. At present, knowledge of the pigment destruction process indicates thatChi a and Chi --derived pigments are not considered useful quantitativetracers of the feeding activity of copepods. The results ofthis study suggest a reassessment of the application of thegut fluorescence method to evaluate grazing activity of thecopepod A.clausi  相似文献

Measurements of hydrography, chlorophyll, moulting rates ofjuvenile copepods and egg production rates of adult female copepodswere made at eight stations along a transect across the Skagerrak. The goals of the study were to determine (i) if there were correlationsbetween spatial variations in hydrography, phytoplankton andcopepod production rates, (ii) if copepod egg production rateswere correlated with juvenile growth rates, and (iii) if therewas evidence of food-niche separation among co-occumng femalecopepods The 200 km wide Skagerrak had a stratified water columnin the center and a mixed water column along the margins. Suchspatial variations should lead to a dominance of small phytoplanktoncells in the center and large cells along the margins; however, during our study blooms of Gyrodinium aureolum and Ceratium(three species) masked any locally driven differences in cellsize: 50% of chla was >11 µm, 5% in the 11–50µm fraction and 45% <50 µm. averaged for allstations. Chlorophyll ranged from 0.2 to 2.5 µg l–1at most depths and stations. Specific growth rates of copepodsaveraged 0.10 day–1 for adult females and 0.27 day–1for juveniles The latter is similar to maximum rates known fromlaboratory studies, thus were probably not food-limited. Eggproduction rates were food-limited with the degree of limitationvarying among species: 75% of maximum for Centropages typicus, 50% for Calanus finmarchicus, 30% for Paracalanus parvus and 15% for Acartia longiremis and Temora longicornis. Thedegree of limitation was unrelated to female body size suggestingfood-niche separation among adults. Copepod production, summedover all species, ranged from 3 to 8 mg carbon m–3day–1and averaged 4.6 mg carbon m–1 day–1. Egg productionaccounted for 25% of the total.  相似文献

Apart from grazing interactions, little is known regarding thesublethal effects of Karenia brevis cells on copepod behavior. We conducted grazing and mortality experiments with K. breviscells and brevetoxins (PbTx-2), establishing routes of toxicityfor the copepods Acartia tonsa, Temora turbinata and Centropagestypicus. Subsequent behavioral experiments determined whethercopepod swimming and photobehavior, both behaviors involvedin predator avoidance, were impaired at sublethal K. brevisand PbTx-2 levels. Copepods variably grazed toxic K. brevisand non-toxic Prorocentrum minimum at bloom concentrations.Although copepods accumulated brevetoxins, significant mortalitywas only observed in T. turbinata at the highest test concentration(1 x 107 K. brevis cells L–1). Acartia tonsa exhibitedminimal sublethal behavioral effects. However, there were significanteffects on the swimming and photobehavior of T. turbinata andC. typicus at the lowest sublethal concentrations tested (0.15µg PbTx-2 L–1, 1 x 105 K. brevis cells L–1).Although physiological incapacitation may have altered copepodbehavior, starvation likely played a major role as well. Thesedata suggest that sublethal effects of K. brevis and brevetoxinon copepod behavior occur and predicting the role of zooplanktongrazers in trophic transfer of algal toxins requires knowledgeof species-specific sublethal effects.  相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I–1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]–1 h–1 [µmol m s–1]–1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]–1 h–1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m–2 s–1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm–2 s–1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell–1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments. Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate, was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom.  相似文献

Relatively warm (12.50–12.75°C) and high-salinity[<35.640 practical salinity units (PSU)] water flowing eastwardwas detected at the shelf-break during a cruise carried Outin the southern Bay of Biscay in Spring 1987. The slope currentinduced the formation of a convergent front separating well-mixedoceanic waters from haline-stratified coastal waters. Very highconcentrations of dissolved oxygen (295 µmol kg–1)and chlorophyll a(>4.5 mg m–3) were found at the outeredge of the frontal boundary. Small autotrophic flagellatesdominated the phytoplankton community. Primary production peakedat the boundary region. Estimated phytoplankton growth ratesindicated that active growth was taking place, with lower turnovertimes integrated over the water column at the frontal station(2.5–5 days) than at coastal (1.5–2.8 days) or oceanic(1.5–3.5 days) stations. The lowest doubling times (1–2days) were calculated for surface frontal populations. Accumulationof zooplankton was also observed associated with the convergentphysical structure, although this relationship was less markedthan for phytoplankton. Copepods, mainly Paracalanus parvus,Acartia clausi and Oithona helgolandica, formed the bulk ofthe mesozooplankton biomass. Compatibility between the sizeof phytoplankton cells and copepod size spectra indicate highfood availability for these animals, particularly in the vicinityof the front. The distribution of fish eggs and fish larvaewas also coupled with the slope current-induced front. Sardinelarvae were more abundant at the coastal side of the front, whereas larval stages of blue whiting reached the highest densitiesat off-shelf stations. Larvae of lamellibranch molluscs andbryozoa were restricted to nearshore waters, as the frontalboundary prevented larval dispersion to the open ocean. Theresults presented in this paper suggest that the Iberian slopecurrent and its associated shelf-break frontal structure werecrucial in controlling phytoplankton primary production, activityof grazers, distribution of larvae of fishes and benthic invertebrates, and ultimately in determining the structure of the pelagic foodweb in the southern Bay of Biscay during the seasonal periodof vertical mixing.  相似文献

The distinct patterns of stratification in the North Channeland stratified region of the western Irish Sea influence theseasonal abundance of phytoplankton. The 3–4 month productionseason in the stratified region was characterized by productionand biomass peaks in the spring (up to 2378 mg C m2 day–1and 178.4 mg chlorophyll m–2) and autumn (up to 1280 mgC m–2 day–1 and 101.9 mg chlorophyll m–2).Phytoplankton in the North Channel exhibited a short, late productionseason with a single summer (June/July) peak in production (4483mg Cm–2 day–1) and biomass (–160.6 mg chlorophyllm–2). These differences have little influence on copepoddynamics. Both regions supported recurrent annual cycles ofcopepod abundance with similar seasonal maxima (182.8–241.8103ind. m–2) and dominant species (Pseudocalanus elongatusand Acartia clausi). Specific rates of population increase inthe spring were 0.071 and 0.048 day1 for the North Channel andstratified region, respectively. Increased copepod abundancein the stratified region coincided with the spring bloom, andwas significantly correlated with chlorophyll standing stock.Increased copepod abundance preceded the summer production peakin the North Channel. This increase was not correlated withchlorophyll standing crop, suggesting that a food resource otherthan phytoplankton may be responsible for the onset of copepodproduction prior to the spring bloom. Hetero-trophic microplanktonas an alternative food source, and advection of copepods fromthe stratified region, are proposed as possible explanationsfor copepod abundance increasing in advance of the summer peakin primary production.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on the seasonal cycling of egg productionrates for Centropages typicus and Acartia clausi did not reflectseasonal changes in densities for these species at sea. Maximumegg production rates occurred from autumn to spring when populationabundances at sea were low. In late spring, an increment inpopulation numbers was followed by a drastic decline in eggdeposition which continued into summer. The percentage lossdue to mortality, calculated using egg data and total numberof copepodid stages CIII and CIV recorded at sea {small tilde}2weeks later, indicated greatest mortality (80–99%) fromeggs to copepodids during periods of high breeding intensity. These results suggest that high and low density phases in populationnumbers may be the outcome of variations in reproductive potentialand survival rates of eggs and immature stages rather than reproductivepotential per se.  相似文献

Food selectivity and grazing impact by Acartia bifilosa, Temora longicornis and Centropages typicus on Dinophysis spp. plankton assemblages were experimentally investigated in the Baltic Sea. Toxin analyses were carried out on phyto- and zooplankton-dominated size fractions from field-collected samples to assess if toxins produced by Dinophysis spp. would end up in the zooplankton. All copepod species fed actively on toxic Dinophysis spp. (Dinophysis acuta and Dinophysis norvegica). Despite the non-selective feeding behaviour by T. longicornis and C. typicus, selectivity coefficients on D. acuta progressively decreased as food availability increased. Similar response was not observed for A. bifilosa, which displayed an even less selective behaviour. A. bifilosa had no significant negative effect on the net growth of D. norvegica at the lowest food concentration offered, whereas T. longicornis and C. typicus had significant negative effects on the net growth of D. acuta at low concentrations, similar to those observed in situ. Both species could potentially contribute as a substantial loss factor for Dinophysis spp. provided they are abundant at the onset of the blooms. The estimated grazing impact by the copepod populations was only considerable when C. typicus abundance was high and D. acuta population in sharp decline. Our results suggest that when high abundance of grazers and poor growth condition of prey populations prevail, grazing impact by copepods can contribute considerably to prevent Dinophysis spp. populations to grow or to cause the populations to decline. Okadaic acid was detected in the zooplankton size fraction at one occasion, but the concentration was far lower than the one expected from the ingested toxins. Thus, even if copepods may act as vectors of DSP-toxins to higher trophic levels, the amount of these toxins transported in the food web by copepods seems limited.  相似文献

The spawning rate of laboratory-reared Centropages typicus fedHymenomonas elongala increases with food concentration, up toa value of {small tilde}2800 µg C (16 500 cells) ml–1.An alternation of a low food (1000 cells ml–1) and highfood concentration (16 500 cells ml–1) is not favourableto egg release when its periodicity is 1 or 2 days, whereasit may be of advantage if it is longer (3–6 days). Inthe latter case, Centropages typicus will benefit best fromthe rich food diet if this coincides with (or just follows)the last moult.  相似文献

The impact of a cyclopoid copepod population on the protozoacommunity (two ciliate categories and Cryptomonas) was assessedweekly during the spring cohort of Cyclops vicinus (one monthduration) in hypereutrophic Lake Søbygård by insitu gradient experiments with manipulation of ambient zooplanktonabundance. As C.vicinus always made up >92% of the zooplanktonbiomass, the response of protozoa is assumed to be a resultof predation by the copepod. Significant effects of copepodbiomass on protozoa net population growth rates were obtainedin the four experiments. Copepod clearance rates were significantlyhigher on oligotrichs than on prostomatids and Cryptomonas butdeclined for all three protozoa categories during the firstthree weeks of the copepod cohort, probably because of the changein developmental instar composition of the copepod population.Grazing impact on protozoa at ambient copepod abundance wasconsiderable (range, 0.05–0.87 day–1) and could, together with the estimated reproductive potential of protozoans(range, –0.20–0.87 day–1), account for thedecline in abundance and biomass of protozoa during the cohortdevelopment. Carbon flow from the protozoa to C.vicinus (range,2.8–23.5 µg C l–1 day–1) documents thepresence of a trophic link between protozoa and the spring cohortof C.vicinus in Lake Søbygård.  相似文献

Field data from seven alpine lakes in Serra da Estrela. Portugal.show that reproduction in Daphnia may be as efficiently controlledby fish predation and copepod predation on eggs in brood cavitiesas it is by food limitation. Body length and clutch size estimatesin Daphnia pulicaria revealed high inter- and intra-populationvariability in maturation size (body size at first reproduction).and in number of eggs per clutch. Daphnia at first maturationin lakes stocked with rainbow trout were half the size of thosefound in fishless lakes (body length of 0.86–0.95 and1.55–1.81 mm. respectively). The mean number of eggs perclutch was reduced to a similar degree by food limitation, predationby fish and copepod predation on eggs in brood cavities, butthe underlying mechanisms of this reduction were different.Food limitation caused smaller clutch sizes in all individuals,so variation remained the same. Fish predation caused the selectiveremoval of individuals with maximum clutches, so variation decreased.Copepod predation caused removal of eggs from brood cavitiesof randomly infested females, so that variation increased, particularlyat a high food level when non-infested females carried largeclutches of eggs.  相似文献

Feeding on natural plankton populations and respiration of thesmall cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis were measured duringthe warm season in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, USA. AlthoughO.similis did not significantly ingest small autotrophic andheterotrophic flagellates (2–8 µn), this copepodactively fed on >10 µm particles, including autotrophic/heterotrophic(dino)flagel-lates and ciliates, with clearance rates of 0.03–0.38ml animal–1 h–1. The clearance rates increased withthe prey size. O.similis also fed on copepod nauplii (mainlycomposed of the N1 stage of Acartia tonsa with a clearance rateof 0.16 ml animal–1 h–1. Daily carbon ration fromthe combination of these food items averaged 148 ng C animal–1day–1 (41% of body C day–1), with ciliates and heterotrophicdino-flagellates being the main food source ({small tilde}69%of total carbon ration). Respiration rates were 020–0.23µl O2 animal–1 day–1. Assuming a respiratoryquotient of 0.8 and digestion efficiency of 0.7, the carbonrequirement for respiration was calculated to be 125–143ng C animal–1 day–1, close to the daily carbon rationestimated above. We conclude that predation on ciliates andheterotrophic dinoflagellates was important for O.similis tosustain its population in our study area during the warm season.  相似文献

Zooplankton, sampled at five stations from the upper Sangga estuary (7 km upstream) in Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR), Malaysia, to 16 km offshore, comprised more than 47% copepod. Copepod abundance was highest at nearshore waters (20,311 ind m−3), but decreased toward both upstream (15,572 ind m−3) and offshore waters (12,330 ind m−3). Copepod abundance was also higher during the wetter NE monsoon period as compared to the drier SW monsoon period, but vice versa for copepod species diversity. Redundancy analysis (RDA) shows that copepod community structure in the upper estuary, nearshore and offshore waters differed, being influenced by spatial and seasonal variations in environmental conditions. The copepods could generally be grouped into estuarine species (dominantly Acartia spinicauda Mori, Acartia sp1, Oithona aruensis Früchtl, and Oithona dissimilis Lindberg), stenohaline species (Acartia erythraea Giesbrecht, Acrocalanus gibber Giesbrecht, Paracalanus aculateus Giesbrecht, and Corycaeus andrewsi Farran) and euryhaline species (Parvocalanus crassirostris Dahl, Oithona simplex Farran, and Bestiolina similis (Sewell)). Shifts in copepod community structure due to monsoonal effects on water parameters occurred at the lower estuary. Copepod peak abundance in mangrove waters could be associated with the peak chlorophyll a concentration prior to it. Evidence of copepod consumption by many species of young fish and shrimp larvae in the MMFR estuary implies the considerable impact of phytoplankton and microphytobenthos on mangrove trophodynamics.  相似文献

Feeding by larval and post-larval ctenophores on microzooplankton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Feeding by the coastal ctenophorc, Mnemiopsis leidyi, on microplanktonwas investigated. Larval ctenophores (tentaculate stage) grewbest and had the highest survival rates when offered a mixtureof ciliates and copepod nauplii. Larvae did not survive whenoffered phytoplankton alone. Clearing of planktonjc ciliatesby post-larval ctenophores was a function of the ciliate speciesand the size of the predator. Removal of small ciliates (<20µm in size) and phytoplankton was negligible. Small post-larvalctenophores (volume <4 cm3) had higher biovolume-specificclearing rates (0.5–1.5 1 cm–3 day–1) thandid larger ctenophores fed the same ciliate species. Duringin situ incubations, adult M. leidyi removed ciliates, rotifersand copepod nauplii from natural microplankton assemblages. The data indicate that non-crustacean microzooplanlctoo arean important component of the diet of larval and post-larvallocate cteoophores, particularly when copepod standing stocksare low.  相似文献

Zooplankton tolerant to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) could beindirectly affected by UVR through interactions with UV-sensitivespecies in the same ecosystem. In Lake Giles, Pennsylvania,USA, the calanoid copepod Leptodiaptomus minutus is more UVRtolerant than the cohabiting species Daphnia catawba and Cyclopsscutifer. We asked whether L. minutus is affected by UV-inducedmortality of a food competitor (D. catawba) or a predator ofits nauplii (C. scutifer). We conducted two in situ enclosureexperiments with six treatments: L. minutus alone, L . minutus+ Daphnia and L. minutus + Cyclops in the presence and absenceof UVR. There were few differences in survival among treatmentsin Experiment 1, which had enhanced food and a cumulative UVR(320 nm) dose of 9.3 kJ m–2. In Experiment 2, which hadambient food and a UVR (320 nm) dose of 20.0 kJ m–2, L.minutus survival and reproduction were higher in the +UVR comparedto –UVR, regardless of competitors or predators. Chlorophylla (Chl a) in Experiment 2 was higher in the +UVR than –UVR.While interactions between zooplankton species of differingUVR tolerances are potentially important, these results insteaddemonstrate that the beneficial UVR effect on L. minutus isindependent of concurrent detrimental UVR effects on competitorsand predators. Further research on the phytoplankton communityis necessary to determine whether UVR alleviates bacterial competition, increases nutrient availability or affects phytoplankton byother mechanisms.  相似文献

The abundance and spatial distribution of copepod species werecompared in the euhaline region of the polluted estuary of Bilbao[mean biological oxygen demand (BOD): 49748.05 kg day–1in 1996] and the unperturbed estuary of Urdaibai. Sampling wasperformed at fixed salinity sites, where data of temperature, dissolved oxygen saturation, particulate organic matter, Secchidisk depth and chlorophyll were also obtained. Differences betweenthe estuaries and within the estuaries for environmental variablesand copepod abundances were tested statistically. The dominantspecies Acartia clausi and Paracalanus parvus differed significantlyin abundance between estuaries, and most of neritic speciesdiminished more drastically with decreasing salinity in Bilbaoby the effect of pollution. The different responses observedamong species in relation to pollution and water desalinationare discussed. The lack of the brackish-water species in Bilbaoindicated that water quality worsening upward the estuary ofBilbao not only limited the penetration of neritic species butalso prevented the development of autochthonous estuarine species. At the outer euhaline region of Bilbao, however, pollution wasfound to be low enough to enhance the development of tolerantneritic species that are favoured under moderate pollution conditions. Results indicate that comparisons of copepod abundances anddistributions with salinity in estuaries may be a useful toolto evaluate the health of the different estuarine pelagic habitats.  相似文献

Perceptive performance and feeding behavior of calanoid copepods   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The goal of this study was to determine variables associatedwith calanoid feeding behavior, and thus, to improve our understandingof the basics of calanoid feeding rates. These variables includedperiods and frequency of appendage motion, rates of cell clearance, distance at which a copepod first reacts to a cell which iseventually captured, and rate of water flow through the areacovered by the motions of a copepod's feeding appendages. Theeffects of these variables on feeding rates were determinedfor copepodids and adult females of the calanoid copepod Eucalanuspileatus at phytoplankton concentrations covering the rangeencountered by this species on the south-eastern shelf of theUSA. Our results indicate that the distance at which E.pileatusperceives phytoplankton cells increases {small tilde}2-foldas food concentrations decrease from 1.0 to 0.1 mm3 l–1.These results lead us to hypothesize that this is due to increasedsensitivity of chemosensors on the copepods' feeding appendages. This 2-fold increase in perceptive distance amounts to a near4-fold increase in perceived volume which is close to the 6-foldincrease in volume swept clear (VSC) from 1.0 to 0.1 mm3 l–1of Thalassiosira weissflogii. We assume that the increases inVSC by planktonic copepods, when food levels are below satiation, are largely a function of the sensory performance of the individualcopepod.  相似文献
