I tested the hypothesis that mother-young cofeeding correlates with a systematic similar food selection in wild Mayotte brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus). I simultaneously recorded the feeding behavior of 4 maternal dyad members, from infant birth to weaning, and 10–12 mo of juvenile age, during 10-min focal periods, each separated by 5-min intervals over 10 mo. I recorded the solid food items selected for each feeding behavior at the level of specific plant part, along with the distance between the 2 individuals. I considered feeding behaviors simultaneous (between the young lemurs and their mothers) when the young began to eat a food item while the mother was already eating, regardless of the separation distance. During their first year, most of the feeding events of the young brown lemurs were initiated by their mothers. However, infants also selected different food items from those chosen by their mothers in almost one-third of cases, and the food selection dissimilarity was not attributable to an increase in the distance of separation. For juveniles, dissimilar food selection was significantly lower and linked to an increase in mother-juvenile separation distance. Thus, the substantial proportion of dissimilarity in solid foods selected by the infant during the synchronized feeding behaviors strongly suggests that social influences were not food-specific and might instead drive the acquisition of group feeding activity rhythm rather than food selection habits.  相似文献

According to the principle of competitive exclusion, niche differentiation allows the stable coexistence of closely related species. We analyzed dietary profile and diversity, and dietary overlap between syntopic brown howlers (BR; Alouatta guariba clamitans) and black and gold howlers (BLG; A. caraya) in the Atlantic Forest of NE Argentina, with the objective of evaluating the degree of trophic niche overlap and potential interspecific competition for food. During 12 months, we collected data on feeding behavior of two groups of each howler species using the scan sampling method, together with data on food availability. Both at the group‐ and species‐level, we analyzed feeding behavior in terms of monthly percentages of time spent feeding on each food type and specific food item, dietary diversity (Shannon index H′), and we estimated dietary overlap using the percentage index and the Morisita–Horn index (CH). Across months, both howlers showed species‐specific preferences for certain food items, and BLG had a more diverse diet (mean±SE, H′=2.77±0.08) than BR (H′=2.39±0.09). However, diets of both species overlapped extensively (percentage index=45.64±2.97%; CH=0.6±0.05) and diets of conspecific groups did not overlap more than diets of groups of different species. Given their high degree of trophic overlap, syntopic BR and BLG meet one of the conditions necessary for interspecific food competition to occur. Although at present we lack direct evidence for interspecific competition in these howler species, we conclude that high levels of niche overlap may have an important role in maintaining the essentially parapatric distribution of howler species throughout the Neotropics. The feeding ecology of Mystus tengara (Hamilton, 1822) was studied in the Tanore wetland of Rajshahi, northwestern Bangladesh from January 2011 to December 2011. In fish purchased from the local market, a total of 14 713 food items were identified in the stomach contents of 3191 M. tengara specimens, an omnivorous catfish with a diversified feeding strategy including cladocerans, copepods, rotifers, gastropods, green algae, diatoms, insects, ‘small fish remains, fish fry and eggs’ and ‘other’ food items. Insects were the most dominant group of prey throughout the year. Seasonal changes in diet composition were due to the availability of prey items and fish size. Ontogenetic changes were noted between the juveniles and adults. The gut contents of M. tengara showed that the food items were from different layers of the water bodies.  相似文献

The ontogenetic and seasonal feeding habits of 489 individuals of Diplodus annularis L. in Zostera sp. beds were studied using frequency of occurrence, numeric percentage, percentage by weight and an index of relative importance (IRI). The Schoener overlap index was used to compare diets by fish size and seasons. Diet composition including 18 different prey taxa was evidently heterogenous among annular seabream size groups, with no significant dietary overlap. In relation to body size, juveniles were omnivorous and preferred algae and plants, while adults were omnivorous and preferred animals. Principal prey items by decreasing importance were Chlorophyta (dominant taxa Cladophora sp. and Enteromorpha flexuosa), Decapoda (dominant species Upogebia pusilla), Gastropoda (important species Rissoa ventricosa and Alvania sp.), Bivalvia and Spermatophyta, as well as other food items (mostly unidentified Crustacea and fish eggs). The southern vizcacha (Lagidium viscacia) is a rock specialist that inhabits small colonies in isolated rocky outcrops of northwestern Patagonia. This study analyzes its diet selection in relation to food availability, establishes the degree of dietary specialization, and discusses the potential competition with exotic herbivores. Diet composition and food availability were determined in summer and winter in eight rocky outcrops by microhistological analysis of fecal pellets, and food availability was estimated by the Braun Blanquet cover abundance scale. Vegetation cover differences were detected by using a random analysis of variance (ANOVA) factorial block design, and dietary preferences were determined by the confidence interval of Bonferroni. The southern vizcacha showed a specialized feeding behavior despite the consumption of a wide variety of items. Their diet was concentrated on a few types of food, mainly grasses, and the trophic niche was narrow and without seasonal variations. In winter, when food was scarce and of lower quality than summer, diet was dominated by Stipa speciosa, suggesting a selection according to the selective quality hypothesis. Our results (narrow trophic niche, restricted activity near rocky outcrops, and a diet with high proportions of low-quality grasses) showed that the vizcacha is an obligatory dietary specialist, and these characteristics made it highly vulnerable to changes in food availability. In this scenario, overgrazing caused by alien species with similar diets, as the European hare and livestock, could negatively affect their colonies.  相似文献

Summary The leaf-monkey Presbytis johnii has been found to exhibit considerable selectivity in its dietary utilization of mature foliage in a rain-forest habitat. To investigate the basis of this selectivity and to examine the hypothesis that the observed selection is related to the digestibility and toxicity of the available foliage, chemical analyses have been made on 16 of the most important tree species in the monkey's habitat. It has been found that the most heavily used items, which form a staple part of the diet of P. johnii, are characterized by a low fibre content and a very low condensed tannin content. However, neither class of compound is an absolute feeding deterrent as minor, but still significant, mature leaf food items contain considerable amounts of both. It is suggested that the feeding deterrents in these minor items, which may be ingested to supply specific dietary requirements, can perhaps be tolerated because of their dilution in the gut by the dietary staples. An examination of the pepsin/cellulase digestibility of available mature foliage showed that the staple food items tended to be highly digestible. Little correlation has been found between alkaloid content and food selection and it is suggested that the colobine forestomach microflora has the ability to detoxify at least some alkaloids. Additional data on mature leaf petioles and young leaves suggest that the high ratio of cell-sap to cell-wall in these items, and their related high digestibility, explain the high relative abundance of these items in the P. johnii diet.  相似文献

Captive data show that juvenile mammals usually reproduce the diet of the adult. However, it is not known whether, in natural environments, the process of feeding maturation varies according to available foods and to adult choices. I examined the feeding ontogeny of Mayotte brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus), a presumed introduced species, from birth to 12 mo old in the southern dry forest of Mayotte. The study focused on activities and diets of 4 mothers and their juveniles from 2 groups in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, we also observed 2 other dyads from each group for 2 mo (March/April). I assessed plant phenology in each group's home range. There are 4 phases of feeding ontogeny: (1) the 3 mo following birth are characterized by lactation, early bouts of exploration, and consumption; (2) the next 2 mo are characterized by feeding and social weaning; (3) during the sixth and seventh mo, the daily feeding activity rhythms of the mother and her juvenile are synchronized and diets largely overlap; (4) at 10–12 mo of age, the feeding juvenile is closer to other group members than to its mother. During their first year of life, especially before being weaned, juveniles eat several food items that are not ingested by their mothers. It appeared that the progressive overlap in dietary items and feeding synchrony between mother and juvenile depends on several types of leaming. There is a correlation between the availability of particular food resources with high nutritional quality and timing of reproduction and infant maturation.  相似文献

To clarify the feeding habits of seagrass fishes, the gut contents of 31 fish species collected in aZostera marina bed at Aburatsubo central Japan, were examined. Ontogenetic changes in food preference were recognized in 12 species. In general, juveniles of the latter preyed mainly on small crustaceans (e.g., gammaridean amphipods) or planktonic animals (e.g., calanoid and cyclopoid copepods), subsequently changing to other prey items (e.g., hard-shelled animals) with growth. Cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the seagrass fish assemblage comprised seven feeding guilds (small-crustacean, planktonic-animal, large-crustacean, polychaete, fish, hard-shelled mollusc and detritus feeders). Of these, small-crustacean feeders and planktonic-animal feeders were the most abundantly represented, including juveniles of several species, which, when adult, transferred to other feeding guilds. The brown hare, a Leporid widespread in the world, is now dispersed across Argentina after its introduction at the end of the 19th century. Studies on hare feeding ecology are important to evaluate a potential competition with domestic and native wild herbivores. This study analyses the brown hare diet in relation to food availability, and dietary overlaps with several herbivores in northern Patagonia. Food availability was estimated by point-quadrat transects, and hare diet by microhistological analysis of faeces, carried out in five habitats in five seasonal samplings. Significant differences were detected by Kruskall–Wallis ANOVA with multiple comparisons by Tukey test. Feeding selection was detected by χ2 test, and dietary preferences by the confidence interval of Bailey. Grasses and chamaephytes were the most available plant categories, with Stipa, Panicum and Acantholippia as main species. Grasses and phanerophytes were the main dietary categories, including Poa, Panicum, Bromus, Adesmia and Prosopidastrum. The phanerophytes Prosopidastrum and Ephedra were more eaten in winter, when the main food item (Poa) presented lower availability. A higher dietary proportion of the chamaephyte Acantholippia occurred in rocky habitats, where the coarse dominant grasses were always avoided. Hares shared most food items with several wild and domestic herbivores in northern Patagonia. The lack of preference for forbs differentiates brown hares from other herbivores. However, hares exhibited important dietary similarities with plain and mountain vizcachas, goats and horses, and an interspecific competition for food is highly probable.  相似文献

利用剖胃法对采自内蒙古自治区鄂尔多斯库布齐沙漠的草原沙蜥(Phrynocephalus frontalis)进行食性分析研究。结果表明,该地区的草原沙蜥在8~9月间,以昆虫类动物为主要食物,占全部食物的95.8%。不同性别草原沙蜥取食的食物种类差异不显著,雌雄个体的食物百分率相似性指数及营养生态位重叠值均较大,雄性的食物多样性指数(IFD)及营养生态位宽度(BTN)均大于雌性。成体和亚成体之间以及亚成体和幼体之间食物种类存在差异但不显著,而成体和幼体间的食物种类差异极显著,不同年龄草原沙蜥的食物百分率相似性指数较小,IFD值与BTN值均是成体最大,幼体最小。总有益系数、不同性别的有益系数分别为V总=22.44%,V雌=12.76%,V雄=9.83%,草原沙蜥是对荒漠化草原有益的类群。  相似文献

  1. Closely related predator species often share several prey items, making it hard to differentiate the effects on their feeding habits of variation in food availability and of competition. We hypothesised that we could overcome this obstacle by quantifying and comparing nutritional niches.
  2. We reviewed dietary studies that assessed the relative bulk of each food item, as either per cent biomass or per cent mean volume, in the diet of two closely related species, pine marten Martes martes and stone marten Martes foina, and calculated the nutrient profiles (intakes of protein, lipids and carbohydrates) of each diet.
  3. Both martens’ diets were tightly clustered (mean values: 47% of energy from protein, 39% from lipid, and 14% from carbohydrate). In allopatry, the nutritional niches of the two species did not differ, but in sympatry, the stone marten ate more carbohydrates and less protein than the pine marten. In allopatry, the protein intake of the stone marten remained high (45–52%) in very different habitats, from cultivated lowland to Alpine forests.
  4. Our data suggest that stone marten frugivory may, at least partially, be the result of interspecific competition. By analysing dietary data in the framework of nutritional ecology, we could compare the feeding requirements of pine martens and stone martens more effectively than by using classical estimates of trophic niche overlap at the food item level. This approach may help to shed light on the trophic relationships of other competing species.

Juveniles of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch and mykiss Parasalmo mykiss at the age 1 + (yearlings) are differentiated by the content of different fractions of lipids (the lipid status), feeding habits, and by size-weight characteristics even eight months prior to smoltification. The juveniles of coho salmon and mykiss with high lipid status consume more calorific food items and, as a rule, have higher (on average) body length and weight. The juveniles with low lipid status consume less calorific organisms and have lower body length and weight. It is supposed that a considerable part of juveniles with high lipid status will migrate seaward the next year. The role of feeding habits in formation of this differentiation and, accordingly, in determination of timing of smoltification are discussed.  相似文献

Myotomal slow-oxidative muscle (SM) powers continuous swimming and generates heat needed to maintain elevated locomotor muscle temperatures (regional endothermy) in tunas. This study describes how the amount and distribution of myotomal SM increases with fish size and age in juvenile yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares in relationship to the development of regional endothermy. In T. albacares juveniles 40–74 mm fork length (LF; n = 23) raised from fertilised eggs at the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission Achotines Laboratory in Panama and larger juveniles (118–344 mm LF; n = 5) collected by hook and line off of Oahu, Hawaii, USA, SM was identified by histochemical staining for the mitochondrial enzyme succinic dehydrogenase or by colour (in the two largest individuals). The cross-sectional area of myotomal SM at 60% LF, a position with maximal percentage of SM in larger T. albacares, increased exponentially with LF. The percentage of total cross-sectional area composed of SM at 60% LF increased significantly with both LF and age, suggesting that SM growth occurs throughout the size range of T. albacares juveniles studied. In addition, the percentage of SM at 60% LF that is medial increased asymptotically with LF. The increases in amount of SM and medial SM, along with the development of the counter-current heat-exchanger blood vessels that retain heat, allow larger tuna juveniles to maintain elevated and relatively stable SM temperatures, facilitating range expansion into cooler waters.  相似文献

Age differences in food intake and dietary selection were studied for 8 months among wild male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) under non-predatory situations. Juveniles' feeding time was longer than adult males' in some months, in particular in mating seasons, but did not differ in the other months. Juveniles' feeding speed was slower than that of adult males. However, the age difference in average feeding speed was smaller (90%) than that in expected daily energy expenditure (62–58%). The extent of age difference in feeding speed varied with the food type: the difference was large for fibrous foods, but small for fruits or seeds. As a consequence of the age differences in time spent feeding and feeding speed, the age difference in daily food intake was smaller than expected from metabolic demands. Thus, the hypothesis that juveniles are more vulnerable to starvation than adults was not supported among male Japanese macaques in predator-free Yakushima. Juveniles ate more animal matter, while adult males ate more fibrous foods.  相似文献

Synopsis The feeding; habits of a group of tropical herbivorous rock-dwelling cichlid fishes from Lake Malawi, Africa, are investigated using stomach content analyses. The various species fed selectively on the periphyton of the rocky shores. Blue-green alga of the genus Calothrix was the most common item ingested by the group. Diatoms (Chrysophyta) also were abundant food items. Discriminant analysis showed that dietary items were good variables to identify species. Interspecific dietary differences showed a continuum from those species feeding primarily on Calothrix to those feeding primarily on diatoms. Algal resources exhibit distinct patterns of spatial variation. Diet was correlated with foraging behavior and trophic morphology. Interspecific differences in diet could possibly facilitate ecological coexistence among various species. Such coexistence would contribute to the maintenance of the high diversity fish faunas characteristic of the Great Rift Lakes of Africa.  相似文献

Comparisons of genetic diversity and population genetic structure among different life history stages provide important information on the effect of the different forces and micro‐evolutionary processes that mould diversity and genetic structure after fragmentation. Here we assessed genetic diversity and population genetic structure using 32 allozymic loci in adults, seeds, seedlings and juveniles of eight populations of the micro‐endemic shrub Cestrum miradorense in a highly fragmented cloud forest in central–eastern Mexico. We expected that due to its long history or rarity, this species may have endured the negative effects of fragmentation and would show moderate to high levels of genetic diversity. High genetic diversity (He = 0.445 ± 0.03), heterozygote excess (FIT = ?0.478 ± 0.034, FIS = ?0.578 ± 0.023) and low population differentiation (FST = 0.064 ± 0.011) were found. Seeds had higher genetic diversity (He = 0.467 ± 0.05) than the later stages (overall mean for adults, seedlings and juveniles He = 0.438 ± 0.08). High gene flow was observed despite the fact that the fragmentation process began more than 100 years ago. We conclude that the high genetic diversity was the result of natural selection, which favours heterozygote excess in all stages, coupled with a combination of a reproductive system and seed/pollen dispersal mechanisms that favour gene flow.  相似文献

Abstract

We conducted opportunistic observations on the diet of translocated orange-fronted parakeets (Cyanoramphus malherbi) on Maud Island to provide a first account of the diversity of food types ingested in the wild by this critically endangered species. Orange-fronted parakeets consumed fruits and leaves of 14 plant species as well as non–dietary items such as bark sticks and grit. Of dietary items, 96% were on plant species and 4% invertebrates. Of the plant species ingested 10% were non-natives. A major dietary component consisted of fruits and leaves of mahoe (Melicytus ramiflorus). In contrast to the only other published account of the diet of orange-fronted parakeets, invertebrates constituted a minor part of identified ingested items. This may be related to the different composition of vegetation at the study sites, the low parakeet population density during the time of our study and methodological restrictions during our survey. Our observations on undocumented food items add information about the biology of New Zealands’ rarest parakeet species and indicate dietary flexibility of the species highlighting the potential of other regenerating islands as release sites to expand the geographic distribution of orange–fronted parakeets.  相似文献

Studies on the food and feeding habits of Eutropius niloticus in Lake Kainji, Nigeria revealed that the fish is omnivorous but fed more on insects than on any other food. The most important insects were Povilla adusta Navas nymphs and imagos and adults of the common grasshoppers. Fish, particularly the clupeids Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van den Audernaerde and Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels, also formed an important part of the diet. There was seasonal variation of organisms selected for food and there were variations in the dietary items selected by different age groups. Accumulation of fat was found to correlate with seasonal feeding intensity. E. niloticus serves as food for other fishes.  相似文献

The most common gurnard species in the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) are Chelidonichthys lastoviza and C. obscurus. These two species were collected by trawl nets between February 2000 and July 2002 at depths ranging from 80 to 150 meters. In the laboratory the stomach contents were examined for diet assessment and to determine diet variation in relation to fish size, season and sex. The importance of different prey items was analysed utilising several feeding indexes, while diet overlap was tested using Schoener's index and the null model test. The two species showed similar diets, with the same qualitative and quantitative composition. Basic food consisted of crustaceans, mostly mysids and decapods. For Chelidonichthys lastoviza:Gastrosaccus sp. (F = 48.57%), Anchialina agilis (F = 30.57%) and Sicyonia carinata (F = 21.71%); for Chelidonichthys obscurus:Gastrosaccus sp. (F = 80.95%), A. agilis (F = 55.41%) and Pontocaris lacazei (F = 15.15%). A change in food composition based on fish size was observed in both species: mysids more frequently in the diet of small specimens, and decapods in the largest fishes. Seasonal variation in their diet was also recorded. The two fishes showed a significantly higher number of empty stomachs in late autumn and winter. Regardless of species and size class, a biologically significant diet overlap was observed between C. lastoviza and C. obscurus. This result may indicate a lack of competition among triglid species size‐class combinations or strong competition that has not yet led to resource portioning.  相似文献
