The golden hamster has been described as exhibiting estrous cycle synchrony caused by social dominance. This has recently been reexamined by J. C. Schank (2000, Horm. Behav. 38, 94-101) with the aid of computer simulations. He concluded that there is no evidence for cycle synchrony among golden hamsters. In the present article we confirm this theoretical approach with the help of long-term experiments. Indeed, estrous cycle asynchrony was observed. Singly housed female golden hamsters in phase with their neighbors and in physical contact desynchronized their 4-day cycles after 2 or 3 weeks. Asynchrony was caused mainly by stochastic 5-day cycles. Statistical analysis was performed using a Monte-Carlo bootstrap approach. Based on the empirical data, an individual-based computer model was developed to simulate the dynamics of cycle desynchronization. Potential advantages were deduced for the population level. It emerged that estrous cycle asynchrony led to higher reproductive success for females where the probability of fertilization was low (e.g., after hibernation, poor habitat).  相似文献

Observations of sociosexual behavior of adult ponies, made on two harem groups (each comprised of one vasectomized male and three females), were correlated with follicular development and ovulation for a total of 15 cycles (minimum of 2 cycles per female). Mean cycle length (interovulatory interval) was found to be 19.7 days, with behavioral estrus lasting 7–8 days (5.5 days preovulatory; 2.3 days postovulatory). Estrous females typically showed increased frequencies of approaching and following the stallion, urinating, presenting, clitoral winking, and tail raising. Approaching and following the stallion appeared earlier and persisted longer than other estrous responses. Deviations from the modal estrous pattern included cycles with subestrus, continual estrus, behavioral estrus in the absence of ovulation, and displays of female mounting. Dominance tests revealed that a mare's status was unaffected by the phases of the estrous cycle. The presence of more than one estrous female affected the copulatory performance of both stallions, most notably in reduced latencies to first mount, intromission, and ejaculation, in spite of differences between the stallions in sexual vigor. Each stallion usually selected the dominant mare for copulation when there were multiple estrous females present, but mounts were not displayed exclusively to one female per test. The social testing situation made apparent the importance of use of space in sociosexual communication in this species, particularly in avoidance of the stallion by diestrous mares and standing alone or in proximity to him by estrous mares.  相似文献

Synchrony among golden hamsters is often cited in the menstrual-cycle synchrony literature and has recently become a paradigm for explaining menstrual synchrony in humans (L. Weller, A. Weller, and S. Roizman (1999), J. Comp. Psychol. 113, 261-268). It has also stimulated further research on synchrony in Djungarian hamsters, for which no evidence of synchrony was found (G. E. Erb, H. E. Edwards, K. L. Jenkins, L. C. Mucklow, and K. E. Wynne-Edwards (1993), Physiol. Behav. 54, 955-959). The case for synchrony in the golden hamster is reexamined in this paper. It is demonstrated, with the help of computer simulation experiments, that the experimental method used by G. Handelmann, R. Ravizza, and W. J. Ray (1980, Horm. Behav. 14, 107-115) for detecting synchrony has a critical flaw. It does not distinguish synchrony that can occur by chance (pseudo entrainment) from synchrony due to a process of entrainment. It is suggested that the apparent entrainment of estrous cycles in hamsters and the role of social dominance may be due to the stress caused by moving animals to different rooms or grouping them. Thus, because we cannot reject the possibility of pseudo entrainment as an explanation for these results, it must be concluded that there is no evidence that golden hamsters synchronize their estrous cycles. Finally, an approach is briefly outlined for testing synchrony in golden hamsters.  相似文献

Recent findings suggest that menstrual synchrony may occur in humans and is more dependent on factors of close personal association than simple prox imity. Part I of this study analyzed the estrous cycles of 10 captive group living chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) housed in two separate groups in the same building. Each group contained at least one male. The mean discrepan cies for (1) the approximate day of ovulation (last day of maximum swelling) and (2) the day of onset of estrous swelling were determined for all possible pairs within groups and compared to the mean discrepancies of pairs between groups. With respect to the probable day of ovulation, the mean discrepancy of animals caged together was 8.0 days and that of animals caged separately was 10. 7 days. Comparing the onset of estrous swelling, the mean between groups was 10.4 days, whereas females caged together averaged only 5.7 days. A repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated a significant group effect in the onset of estrous swelling (F = 5.68,p < 0.05), whereas there was no significant difference between the animals caged together and those caged separately with respect to the last day of maximum swelling (F = 1.37, NS). Part II of the study compared the onset of the first postpar tum estrus (PPE) to the onset of estrus in cagemates. During a 6-year period, 13 females exhibited 33 PPEs while in social contact with cycling females. Of 86 paired comparisons, the PPE onset of 43 (50%) occurred with in 6 days of the swelling onset of a cagemate. The results suggest that, as in other species (including humans), the social contact and time spent together influence the synchrony of chimpanzee estrous cycles, especially in terms of swelling onset. The synchrony of estrous swelling and possible mediation by olfactory and/or hormonal cues are discussed as they relate to chimpanzee social structure and female reproductive strategy.  相似文献

The influence of the adrenal gland and photoperiod on the adult female hamster estrous cycle was investigated. Hamsters were exposed to 14 hours of light per day and estrous cycles were monitored. Normal cycles were characterized by a copious discharge every 4th day. Hamsters were then adrenalectomized, adrenalectomized and blinded, or blinded only. Adrenalectomized/blinded hamsters were given a .2% sodium saccharine-1%(w/v) sodium chloride solution to drink which promotes long-term survival in most adrenalectomized hamsters. With blinding alone, it took from 18 to 62 days for cessation of estrous cycles. Cycles ceased in a mean of 36.2 days in blinded/adrenalectomized hamsters. After adrenalectomy only, 3 hamsters continued to show 4-day estrous cycles for at least 9 weeks in response to the long days. 6 adrenalectomized animals died due to adrenal insufficiency but displayed several 4-day estrous cycles. It is suggested that in the hamster, adrenal hormones are nonessential for the long-term expression of estrous cyclicity. However, further research is needed to determine whether adrenal hormones are capable of modulating photoperiodic time measurement or ovarian regression.  相似文献

Adult male association and its annual change were studied in a wild population of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) on Yakushima Island, Japan. Unlike many other Japanese macaque troops, adult troop males frequently maintained proximity and exchanged grooming with one another in both the mating and non-mating seasons, and the dominance relationship rarely appeared in such inter-male associations. The few cases of agonistic interactions occurred mostly when estrous females or food resources were immediately concerned. Although troop males were very intolerant to newly appeared solitary males (new males) during the mating season, close associations were formed between troop males and new males as soon as the mating season terminated. The consort of new males and lower-ranking troop males with estrous females was frequently disturbed, but these males could copulate no less frequently than higher-ranking males. A comparison among macaque species suggests the existence of two forms of inter-male association: (1) the frequent association based on the symmetrical exchange of social behaviors; and (2) the infrequent and asymmetrical association related to the dominance relationship. The form of inter-male association seems to be influenced by whether or not males can keep close associations with females throughout the year.  相似文献

In an earlier study, estrous female hamsters were found to prefer the urinary odors of dominant males. This study investigated whether estrous females would exhibit preferential responding to randomly chosen, socially naive males before dominance testing occurred. Estrous females were indeed found to exhibit such preferences. Such discriminative abilities are discussed with reference to adaptive mating strategies for females.  相似文献

Single injections of melatonin (25 micrograms) were administered to female hamsters, 15 minutes before lights-out (14L:10D), during either the early diestrous (day 1) or proestrous (day 4) phase of the estrous cycle. Hamsters which received melatonin only on the evening of proestrus became anovulatory by three weeks of treatment, while those that were injected with melatonin during diestrus, or administered oil on either day 1 or 4, continued to exhibit normal estrous cycles. These results indicate that quartan injections of melatonin can suppress reproductive function in female hamsters, and that the effectiveness of the injections may be dependent upon the stage of the estrous cycle at which they are administered.  相似文献

The process of reproductive senescence in female rats (Rattus norvegicus, Sprague-Dawley strain) was altered by their social environment during adulthood. The incidence of constant estrus (CE), which marks the end of estrous cyclicity, was nearly twice as high in females living in isolation as it was in females living in groups. Isolated females also entered CE at three times the rate of group-housed females. In addition, the characteristics of a rat's estrous cycle when she was young predicted whether or not she would enter CE during reproductive senescence. However, the characteristics of the cycle that predicted if a rat would enter CE were different for isolated females than for females living in groups. In isolated rats, entry into CE was predicted by a pattern of regular cycles followed by irregular cycles, a lordosis reflex of consistently high intensity during irregular cycles, and an absence of spontaneous pseudopregnancies. Furthermore, a long duration of CE was predicted by early cessation of estrous cycles. In rats living in groups, increased estrogenization of the vaginal smears during irregular cycles was the only predictor of entry into CE. In both environments, the onset of an acyclic lordosis reflex predicted the timing of CE. The potential role of ovarian steroids as mediators of these effects is discussed.  相似文献

The neuro-hypophysial hormone oxytocin (OT) has been implicated in female reproductive and maternal behaviors and in the formation of pair bonds in monogamous species. Here we measure variation in urinary OT concentrations in relation to reproductive biology and socio-sexual behavior in a promiscuously breeding species, the chacma baboon (Papio hamadryas ursinus). Subjects were members of a habituated group of baboons in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. We collected behavioral data and urine samples from n = 13 cycling females across their estrous cycles and during and outside short-term, exclusive sexual consortships. Samples were analyzed via enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and we used linear mixed models (LMM) to explore the relationship between peripheral OT and a female's estrous stage and consortship status, her previous reproductive experience and fertility. We also used a Pearson's correlation to examine the relationship between OT concentrations of consorting females and their extent of behavioral coordination with their consort partners. The results of the LMM indicate that only estrous stage had a significant influence on OT levels. Females had higher OT levels during their periovulatory period than during other stages of their estrous cycle. There were no differences in the OT levels between consorting and non-consorting periovulatory females. However, among consorting females, there was a significant positive relationship between urinary OT levels and the maintenance of close proximity between consort partners. Our results suggest that physiological and behavioral changes associated with the initiation and maintenance of short-term inter-sexual relationships in baboons correspond with changes in peripheral OT.  相似文献

Estrous synchrony in seasonal breeders can in principle be based on and shaped by environmental, internal, and/or social cues. We analyzed the dynamics of estrous synchrony for the first time in a seasonal, nocturnal primate species, the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus). We compared successive estrous cycles and different levels of spatial proximity over two reproductive seasons in a captive population in order to identify possible social influences on estrous synchrony. The females exhibited a marked estrous synchrony at the beginning of each reproductive season, but we found no indication of a process of socially induced synchronization among them. Females housed in the same cage/room were not more strongly synchronized than females housed in different cages/rooms. Moreover, cycles desynchronized from the first to the second estrus of the season. Estrous cycle length did not depend on age, parity, or social housing conditions, but instead mainly on the individuality of the lemurs. This individuality, shown for the first time in a nocturnal primate species, is likely to be based on an endogenous rhythm with a genetic basis. We discuss possible social advantages, e.g., communal rearing, and disadvantages, e.g., mate choice and female-female competition, of estrous synchrony for nocturnal primates living in a dispersed individualized social network, and propose that a moderate flexibility within the individual cycle lengths probably enables the females to compromise between the different socioecological pressures.  相似文献

Among the suite of adaptations displayed by seasonally-breeding rodents, individuals of most species display reproductive regression and concomitant decreases in gonadal steroids during the winter. In addition, some species display increased aggression in short "winter-like" days compared with long "summer-like" day lengths. For example, male Syrian and Siberian hamsters held in short days express heightened levels of aggression that are independent of gonadal steroids. Virtually nothing is known, however, regarding seasonal aggression in female Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus). Studies were undertaken to determine female levels of aggression in long and short days as well as the role of gonadal steroids in mediating this behavior. In Experiment 1, females were housed in long or short days for 10 weeks and resident-intruder aggression was assessed. Prior to testing, estrous cycle stages were determined by vaginal cytology and females were tested during both Diestrus I and Proestrus. In Experiment 2, hormone levels were experimentally manipulated; long-day females were ovariectomized (OVx) or given sham surgeries whereas short-day females were implanted with capsules containing 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) or Progesterone (P). In Experiment 3, both long- and short-day females were ovariectomized and implanted with either an exogenous E(2) or blank capsule, or given a sham surgery. Short-day hamsters displayed increased aggression relative to long-day females. Aggression was not affected by estrous stage. There was no difference in aggression between long-day OVx and sham animals. Furthermore, neither exogenous E(2) nor P had any significant effect on aggression. These results support previous findings of increased non-breeding aggression and suggest that short-day aggression is not likely mediated by circulating levels of gonadal steroids. These results also suggest that the endocrine regulation of seasonal aggression may be similar between the sexes.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to test whether cells which are born in adulthood and migrate to the olfactory bulb of adult male golden hamsters are activated during sexual behaviors, to determine the time course over which such responsiveness appears, and to ask whether activation is specific to sexual cues. In the first experiment, adult male hamsters were injected with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU, 50mg/kg b.w.) 3 times over the course of one week in order to mark dividing cells. Ten days, three weeks, or seven weeks after the first BrdU injection, the animals were allowed to mate with an estrous female for half an hour before being sacrificed. Confocal analysis of fluorescent immunostaining of BrdU and c-Fos first revealed dual labeled cells in the olfactory bulb 3 weeks after injection of the thymidine analog. In order to determine whether the activation of these newly generated cells is specific to sexual cues, we next compared the incidence of c-Fos expression in newborn (BrdU positive) cells among male hamsters exposed to an estrous female, an aggressive male, a cotton swab containing vaginal secretion from an estrous female hamster (FHVS), a cotton swab containing peppermint, or a cotton swab containing distilled water. In the mitral and glomerular layers of the accessory olfactory bulb, animals exposed to an estrous female had significantly more double labeled cells than did those given other treatments (p < 0.01). In the mitral layer of the main bulb, animals exposed to an estrous female had a significantly higher percentage of double labeled cells than those of other groups, except those exposed to an aggressive male (p < 0.05). No double labeled cells were seen in medial preoptic area (MPOA), medial nucleus of the amygdala (Me), the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), or the hypothalamus. Our results indicate that cells born in adulthood are more responsive to cues arising from estrous females than other stimuli, and thus may participate in sociosexual behaviors.  相似文献

The ability of outbred female Syrian hamsters to differentially respond to urine samples obtained from either inbred or outbred Syrian males was examined. The odors obtained from the males were introduced into a Y-maze olfactometer. On the basis of time spent in proximity to the stimuli, estrous females evidenced a preference for the urine of the outbred males. The same females when diestrus exhibited no apparent preferences. It is possible that the ability of females to make such subtle discriminations may impact on mate selection leading to positive assortment.  相似文献

We observed 12 adult female mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata), which have been part of Group 2 at Hacienda La Pacifica, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, via focal animal sampling during portions of July and August of 1988 and 1990–1992 (7–9 females/year, 955.3 hr of observation). We used agonistic interactions and time in proximity (<1 m) as indices of social relationships. The rate of female–female agonistic interactions was 0.38/hr (yearly range: 0.24 to 0.51/hr). Yearly dominance hierarchies, based on outcomes of dyadic agonistic interactions, varied in linearity between 60.7 and 94.6%. Adult females spent 7.10% of their time in proximity to another adult female (yearly range: 1.04–15.64%) and 4.95% of their time in proximity to an adult male (yearly range: 2.27–7.51%). Using yearly dominance ranks, we tested proximity patterns for differences based on rank and presence of dependent offspring. In 3 of the 4 years, high-ranking females spent significantly greater proportions of their time in proximity with other females than did low-ranking females. Time in proximity with the 3 or 4 adult males was not associated with rank. Having a dependent infant was not related to the proportion of time in proximity to females or males, and females, especially top-ranking ones, spent more time in proximity to females with dependent infants than to females without infants. These results show that social relationships in mantled howler groups are dynamic and generally support predictions made by von Schaik (1989) regarding scramble-type, female competitors. We also discuss the roles of immigrations, infants, and male relationships in the patterning of social relationships.  相似文献

In captive callitrichid primates, female reproductive function tends to vary with social status. However, little is known about the interplay between these factors in wild groups. We report observations on normative ovarian function in dominant and subordinate female golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) living in wild groups. We monitored ovarian status by measuring, via enzyme immunoassay, concentrations of excreted pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) and estrone conjugates (E1C) in fecal samples collected noninvasively from individuals in social groups in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Dominant breeding females demonstrated steroid levels similar to those previously reported for wild cotton-top tamarin females, with statistically significant rises during pregnancy. The duration of elevation of fecal steroids in breeding females was ca. 4 mo, which corresponds with estimates of gestation from captive studies. Low steroid concentrations from December to June suggest a seasonally-related period of infertility in female golden lion tamarins. Dominant and subordinate females demonstrated several differences in endocrine function. In general, younger females living in intact natal family groups showed no evidence of ovarian cyclicity. We noted endocrine profiles consistent with ovulation and subsequent pregnancy for behaviorally subordinate females living in groups with unrelated males or in which a reversal in female dominance status occurred. Results suggest that in addition to changes in female reproductive endocrinology associated with puberty, the regulation of reproduction in females in wild callitrichid groups can be sensitive to status and relatedness to breeding males.  相似文献

The entrainment limits to light-dark cycles can be modified by the experimental conditions under which they are tested. Among the factors that may influence entrainment is the amount of wheel running exerted by the animal. In the present work, the effects of transitory and continuous wheel running on entrainment to light-dark cycles were tested using a range of T cycles at the entrainment limits. Four groups of female hamsters were submitted to 1 h stepwise changes in T cycles. Two groups were exposed to T cycles of which the period was shortened at the lower limit from T22 to T18, and the other two groups were exposed to cycles that lengthened at the upper limit from T27 to T32. One of the groups at the lower limit and one at the upper limit had continuous access to a running wheel, while the others had the wheel locked, except at certain T when a lack of period control by T cycle appeared. The study demonstrates that access to running wheel widens the limits of entrainment to LD cycles. Specifically, the following observations were made: the effects of wheel running for entrainment were more evident in the groups with continuous access to wheel, as they did entrain to T19 and T32; continuous access to a wheel produced aftereffects only after T19, but not under T32; and when animals without a wheel showed relative coordination, unlocking the wheel favored entrainment in all the animals at T31, but in only 1 out 6 at T19. All of these indicate a different effect of the wheel running on the upper and lower limits of entrainment.  相似文献

The entrainment limits to light‐dark cycles can be modified by the experimental conditions under which they are tested. Among the factors that may influence entrainment is the amount of wheel running exerted by the animal. In the present work, the effects of transitory and continuous wheel running on entrainment to light‐dark cycles were tested using a range of T cycles at the entrainment limits. Eight groups of rhesus monkeys each consisting of one male and four ovariectomized females were observed while two of the females were treated with hormones to produce artificial menstrual cycles. These were either synchronized or offset by 7-day increments. Sexually preferred females, defined by the numbers of ejaculations per test, received almost twice as many ejaculations as did non-preferred females during all synchronized and offset cycles and during all cycle phases. However, short-term changes in partner preference occurred when the midcycle phase of non-preferred females coincided with the middle or late progesterone phase of preferred females, suggesting a negative effect of progesterone on behavior during the menstrual cycle. There were highly significant differences between preferred and non-preferred partners for almost all of their sexual and social interactions, and preferred partners showed longer proximity and grooming times as well as higher levels of sexual activity. Partner preferences accounted for more of the behavioral variance between pairs than did female dominance, although males sought the proximity of dominant females independently of their partner preferences. Thus, in a setting uncomplicated by male mate competition, sexual preference by male rhesus monkeys is a robust phenomenon depending on complex interactions between dominance, hormonal status, and the individual behavior of female partners.  相似文献

以独居型啮齿动物——黑线仓鼠(Cricetulus barabensis)为对象,主要测定了与优势-从属关系有关的体重、生理状态和粪便激素变化规律相关的参数。野生成年仓鼠捕获于鲁西南山区农田并于实验室内单独饲养。按照陌生和体重匹配的原则配对,实验动物在中立竞技场中每天进行15 m in的遭遇战并收集粪便,连续28 d。以攻击行为、防御行为、社会行为、非社会行为确定个体的优势-从属地位。用于实验的动物共33只。行为实验结束后,将动物解剖,确定其繁殖及生理状态。结果表明:4周重复遭遇战期间,(1)优势雌体体重显著增加;(2)肾上腺指数显著降低;(3)雌体肾上腺指数与卵巢指数无显著的相关关系;(4)雌体粪便皮质醇及雌二醇含量随时间表现出明显的波动,但优势与从属个体间差异不显著;(5)优势雌体的粪便雌二醇含量与皮质醇含量呈显著的正相关关系。研究结果提示,重复遭遇战未影响雌体的存活及潜在繁殖能力,这可能与黑线仓鼠的独居生活方式有关。  相似文献
