The melanic and typical morphs from 13 families of the moth, Allophyes oxyacanthae (Linnaeus) were tested for evidence of resting site selection in a large box lined with oak bark of three reflectances. For 12 of the families, one or both of the parents originated from two families, 0/1 and 0/3, which had been tested in a similar manner in the previous year. In all of these 12 families typicals showed a preference for the palest background available, "light grey". The melanic results for the same families were significantly heterogeneous but could be partitioned on the basis of parentage, into six families in which melanics preferred light grey, and six families in which melanics preferred the background on which they are most cryptic, dark grey. In the only family in which neither of the parents originated from either 0/1 or 0/3, both typical and melanics showed a preference for the background on which typicals are most cryptic, bare bark. The results of the two years' experiments indicate that it is necessary to postulate that, in addition to the pleiotropic effects of alleles at the melanic locus, another locus (or loci) is involved in the control of resting site selection.  相似文献

The behaviour of individually marked melanic and typical forms of Allophyes oxyacanthae was followed in four successive tests in an apparatus comprising bark of three different reflectances. In samples of wild populations, melanics showed a moderate preference for dark bark, while typicals did not seem to prefer or avoid this substrate. However, in four of the eight families of known parentage tested, both melanics and typicals preferred to rest on dark bark. These four families were the progeny of dark typicals which had shown a preference for dark bark and were the families containing the darkest typicals. In A. oxyacanthae the variation in resting behaviour is not therefore closely associated with the melanic allele but may be linked to a 'dark typical' allele which, together with other loci, produces polygenic darkening of the normal phenotype. The results with A. oxyacanthae are compared with those obtained with Biston betularia and other moth species.  相似文献

Camouflage conceals animals from predators and depends on the interplay between the morphology and behaviour of animals. Behavioural elements of animals, such as the choice of a resting spot or posture, are important for effective camouflage, as well as the animals’ cryptic appearance. To date, the type of sensory input that mediates resting site choice remains poorly understood. Previously, we showed that bark‐like moths perceive and rely on bark structure to seek out cryptic resting positions and body orientations on tree trunks. In the present study, we investigated the sensory organs through which moths perceive the structure of bark when positioning their bodies in adaptive resting orientations. We amputated (or blocked) each one of the hypothetical sensory organs in moths (antennae, forelegs, wings, and eyes) and tested whether they were still able to perceive bark structure properly and adopt adaptive resting orientations. We found that visual information or stimulation is crucial for adaptively orienting their bodies when resting and tactile information from wings may play an additional role. The present study reveals multimodal information use by moths to achieve visual camouflage and highlights the sensory mechanism that is responsible for the adaptive behaviour of cryptic insects. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 900–904.  相似文献

The first intron of the early region 3 from adenovirus type 2 contains a cryptic 5' splice site, Dcr1, 74 nucleotides downstream from the natural site D1. The cryptic site can be activated when the natural site is inactivated by mutagenesis. To investigate the basis for selection between a natural and a cryptic 5' splice site, we searched for cis-acting elements responsible for the exclusive selection of the natural site. We show that both the relative intrinsic strength of the sites and the sequence context affect the selection. A 120-nucleotide segment located at the 3' end of exon 1 enhances splicing at the proximal site D1; in its absence the two sites are used according to their strength. Thus, three cis-acting elements are involved in the silencing of the cryptic site: the sequence of D1, the sequence of Dcr1, and an upstream exonic sequence. We show that the exonic element folds, in solution, into a 113-nucleotide-long stem-loop structure. We propose that this potential stem-loop structure which is located 6 nucleotides upstream of the exon 1-intron junction is responsible for the preferential use of the natural 5' splice site.  相似文献

We have constructed derivatives of the transposon Tn5 carrying the mob site (oriT) of plasmid RP4, and an nptI-sacB-sacR cassette [Ried and Collmer, Gene 57 (1987) 239-246]. The mob site, in conjunction with the antibiotic-resistance markers carried on the transposons, allows identification of transposon inserts in cryptic plasmids by mobilisation to other strains. The sacB-sacR genes allow direct selection for the loss or curing of plasmids, because only strains which no longer contain an active sacB gene are able to grow on media containing sucrose. We have tested these transposons in four strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum and two strains of Rhizobium meliloti, and have been able to demonstrate curing of several large cryptic plasmids, and generation of large deletions in many other plasmids. This method has enabled us to show that the R. leguminosarum plasmids pRL12JI and pR1eVF39f carry auxotrophic markers, and that the plasmid pR1eVF39c carries genes which affect colony morphology.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of cambial age on correlations between different wood traits and the possibility of early selection in order to help decision-making for the improvement of juvenile wood in white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). Increment cores were analysed from 375 trees covering 25 open-pollinated families from a 30-year-old provenance–progeny trial in Quebec, Canada. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between different mechanical and fibre anatomy-related wood traits were found to vary with cambial age. Most correlations became stronger in magnitude in rings closer to the bark. An exception is the correlation between microfibril angle (MFA) and the modulus of elasticity where correlations were strongly negative from the pith to the bark. Age–age correlations for different wood traits were found to be high and possible gains from early selection were estimated to be good in ring 8 and older for most traits. MFA was the trait with the strongest potential for selection as early as ring 4, but a detrimental correlation with wood density may represent a drawback of such a juvenile selection approach. Estimates showed that selection concentrated on a few easily measurable traits such as wood density and core length holds promise to obtain superior genetic gains for mechanical properties, but negative impacts would be expected on fibre anatomy traits related to pulp quality. These findings show the need for more carefully planned breeding and selection strategies if one wishes to improve several traits for different end uses.  相似文献

Cryptic genetic sequences have attenuated effects on phenotypes. In the classic view, relaxed selection allows cryptic genetic diversity to build up across individuals in a population, providing alleles that may later contribute to adaptation when co-opted—e.g., following a mutation increasing expression from a low, attenuated baseline. This view is described, for example, by the metaphor of the spread of a population across a neutral network in genotype space. As an alternative view, consider the fact that most phenotypic traits are affected by multiple sequences, including cryptic ones. Even in a strictly clonal population, the co-option of cryptic sequences at different loci may have different phenotypic effects and offer the population multiple adaptive possibilities. Here, we model the evolution of quantitative phenotypic characters encoded by cryptic sequences and compare the relative contributions of genetic diversity and of variation across sites to the phenotypic potential of a population. We show that most of the phenotypic variation accessible through co-option would exist even in populations with no polymorphism. This is made possible by a history of compensatory evolution, whereby the phenotypic effect of a cryptic mutation at one site was balanced by mutations elsewhere in the genome, leading to a diversity of cryptic effect sizes across sites rather than across individuals. Cryptic sequences might accelerate adaptation and facilitate large phenotypic changes even in the absence of genetic diversity, as traditionally defined in terms of alternative alleles.  相似文献

Progressive background in moths, and a quantitative measure of crypsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A method is presented for quantitative estimation of the degree of crypsis of species seen by visual predators against known backgrounds. It is based upon a comparison between transects taken across animal and background colour patterns. The method was applied to day-resting moths in deciduous forest in New Jersey. Each species is found for two to four weeks at characteristic dates, and there is a constant turnover of species. In both moths and backgrounds there is a regular change in the colour pattern parameters from winter through spring to early summer. Moths are on average more cryptic at their normal dates than they would be if present earlier or later in the year. Species with known resting sites are on average more cryptic on their resting sites than other background habitats. Species that rest on more than one background habitat are less cryptic on their preferred habitats than are specialists. Species that rest under leaves and are not visible from above are not very cryptic. Specific v. general resemblance, disruptive coloration, and factors affecting 'aspect diversity' are discussed. The new method of estimating crypsis is useful for studies of crypsis as well as in sexual selection. It is necessary to know much about the resting sites and behaviour of moths, as well as other functions of colour patterns, to understand colour pattern evolution.  相似文献

The mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of conspicuous visible polymorphisms comprising tens of morphs present a challenge to evolutionary theory. However, for cryptic forms Endler (Evol. Biol., 11, 1978, 319) conjectured that complex backgrounds facilitate polymorphism because in such habitats there are several ways to resemble the resting surface. We use computer simulation to explore the evolution of cryptic morphs on increasingly complex backgrounds under regimes that include selection for crypsis, apostatic predation and dietary wariness. We show that there is a monotonic increase in the number of morphs evolving in a population as the potential number of cryptic morphs increases. The relationship is very weak with selection for crypsis alone, but much stronger with the addition of apostatic selection. In contrast, when dietary wariness is added to the model the plot of number of morphs maintained, as a function of the potential number of cryptic forms available, is minimized at an intermediate number of cryptic forms, i.e. is V-shaped. These counter-intuitive patterns are robust to varying strengths of apostatic selection and different implementations of dietary wariness, and are more pronounced when predator and prey generation lengths are similar.  相似文献

Colour variation in the peppered moth Biston betularia was long accepted to be under strong natural selection. Melanics were believed to be fitter than pale morphs because of lower predation at daytime resting sites on dark, sooty bark. Melanics became common during the industrial revolution, but since 1970 there has been a rapid reversal, assumed to have been caused by predators selecting against melanics resting on today's less sooty bark. Recently, these classical explanations of melanism were attacked, and there has been general scepticism about birds as selective agents. Experiments and observations were accordingly carried out by Michael Majerus to address perceived weaknesses of earlier work. Unfortunately, he did not live to publish the results, which are analysed and presented here by the authors. Majerus released 4864 moths in his six-year experiment, the largest ever attempted for any similar study. There was strong differential bird predation against melanic peppered moths. Daily selection against melanics (s ≈ 0.1) was sufficient in magnitude and direction to explain the recent rapid decline of melanism in post-industrial Britain. These data provide the most direct evidence yet to implicate camouflage and bird predation as the overriding explanation for the rise and fall of melanism in moths.  相似文献

Nesting is a critical yet hazardous life stage for many birds. For colonial‐breeding birds, the conspicuousness of the colony to predators suggests immense pressure to select optimal colonial nesting sites. But what drives selection of those sites? As with solitary nesting birds, reducing access by predators may be the single most important factor. If so, knowledge of the predators involved and the attributes of different potential colony sites can allow us to predict the features that make a site especially safe. We examined the attributes of trees used by breeding colonies of metallic starlings Aplonis metallica in tropical Australia, and experimentally tested if those attributes prevented nest access by predatory snakes. Our surveys confirmed that tree choice by starling nesting colonies is highly non‐random, with all colonies located in tall trees in rainforest clearings, with no low branches and smooth bark. Experimental tests demonstrated that the climbing ability of predatory snakes depends upon bark rugosity, and that colony access by snakes depends on tree attributes such as bark rugosity and canopy connectivity. Our study confirms that colonial‐nesting starlings select colony sites that provide a safe refuge from predation. Intense predation pressure may have driven the evolution of stringent breeding habitat criteria in many other species of colonial‐breeding birds.  相似文献

In this study, we systematically screened the polymorphisms of the whole CYP2D6 gene in the populations of four different geographical locations in China, namely, Shanghai, Shantou, Shenyang, and Xi'an, using a sample of 100 subjects from each population. Forty-eight different polymorphisms were detected as well as 12 novel ones. One novel nonsynonymous SNP was detected, and one novel intronic SNP was revealed that might inactivate a cryptic donor site 392 nucleotides downstream of the exon 6 natural donor site. In addition, the frequencies of some polymorphisms and alleles demonstrated significant differences among the four populations. Linkage disequilibrium analysis and tag SNP selection were performed separately for each population. Haplotypes were analyzed within the selected tag SNPs. Tag SNP selection and haplotype distributions showed differences across the four populations. This is the first large-scale study to analyze polymorphisms systematically across the whole CYP2D6 gene in the Chinese Han population.  相似文献

Summary Growth traits, stem form and branch characteristics in three series of well-replicated trials, comprising open-pollinated families of Pinus elliottii Engelmann, were analysed to investigate whether the absolute value of the component of variance for family effect and its relative value (which is equivalent to one-quarter of heritability on individual values) were related, with trial averages of the traits studied taken as productivity indices of the sites tested. The first series, called the foreign selection series, consisted of four trials comprising open-pollinated families from single clones from a Florida seed orchard and from selected trees in Queensland, Australia. Two trials were established in the eastern Transvaal, at Tweefontein and Frankfort State Forests (SF), and two in Zululand, at Dukuduku and KwaMbonambi SF. The second series, called the Zululand selection series, consisted of open-pollinated families from single trees selected in Zululand that were compared in three trials: in the eastern Transvaal at Wilgeboom SF, in Zululand at Dukuduku SF and in the southern Cape at Lottering SF. The third series, called the South African selection series, consisted of open-pollinated families from single trees selected in the different forest areas of South Africa and compared in four trials: two trials in the eastern Transvaal at Tweefontein and Mariti SF and two in the Natal province at Dukuduku and Weza SF. Some positive and linear relationships between absolute sizes of the variance component for family and trial average for all traits studied, except stem form, were discernible for the foreign selections and for the Zululand selections. The South African selections presented a more erratic pattern of variation. However, when the origin of the genetic material was disregarded, the positive trends were undeniable. Curvilinear relationships between relative values and site averages were discernible, when the origin of the genetic material was disregarded. Further research is needed in order to confirm the suggested effect of site on genetic expressivity of open-pollinated families of slash pine grown in South Africa.  相似文献

Many moths have wing patterns that resemble bark of trees on which they rest. The wing patterns help moths to become camouflaged and to avoid predation because the moths are able to assume specific body orientations that produce a very good match between the pattern on the bark and the pattern on the wings. Furthermore, after landing on a bark moths are able to perceive stimuli that correlate with their crypticity and are able to re-position their bodies to new more cryptic locations and body orientations. However, the proximate mechanisms, i.e. how a moth finds an appropriate resting position and orientation, are poorly studied. Here, we used a geometrid moth Jankowskia fuscaria to examine i) whether a choice of resting orientation by moths depends on the properties of natural background, and ii) what sensory cues moths use. We studied moths’ behavior on natural (a tree log) and artificial backgrounds, each of which was designed to mimic one of the hypothetical cues that moths may perceive on a tree trunk (visual pattern, directional furrow structure, and curvature). We found that moths mainly used structural cues from the background when choosing their resting position and orientation. Our findings highlight the possibility that moths use information from one type of sensory modality (structure of furrows is probably detected through tactile channel) to achieve crypticity in another sensory modality (visual). This study extends our knowledge of how behavior, sensory systems and morphology of animals interact to produce crypsis.  相似文献

Genetic isolates are highly useful in analyses of the molecular background of complex diseases since the enrichment of a limited number of predisposing genes can be predicted in representative families or in specific geographical regions. It has been suggested that the pathophysiology and etiology of familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) and typical migraine with aura are most probably the same. Recent assignment of FHM locus to chromosome 19p in two French families makes it now possible to test this hypothesis. We report here linkage data on four families with multiple cases of migraine disorder originating from the genetically isolated population of Finland. We were interested to discover whether the migraine in these families would also show linkage to the markers on 19p. We could exclude a region of 50 cM, flanking the reported FHM locus, as a site of migraine locus in our four families. It seems evident that locus heterogeneity exists between different diagnostic classes of migraine spectrum of diseases and also between different ethnic groups.  相似文献

Polyandrous females are expected to discriminate among males through postcopulatory cryptic mate choice. Yet, there is surprisingly little unequivocal evidence for female-mediated cryptic sperm choice. In species in which nuptial gifts facilitate mating, females may gain indirect benefits through preferential storage of sperm from gift-giving males if the gift signals male quality. We tested this hypothesis in the spider Pisaura mirabilis by quantifying the number of sperm stored in response to copulation with males with or without a nuptial gift, while experimentally controlling copulation duration. We further assessed the effect of gift presence and copulation duration on egg-hatching success in matings with uninterrupted copulations with gift-giving males. We show that females mated to gift-giving males stored more sperm and experienced 17% higher egg-hatching success, compared with those mated to no-gift males, despite matched copulation durations. Uninterrupted copulations resulted in both increased sperm storage and egg-hatching success. Our study confirms the prediction that the nuptial gift as a male signal is under positive sexual selection by females through cryptic sperm storage. In addition, the gift facilitates longer copulations and increased sperm transfer providing two different types of advantage to gift-giving in males.  相似文献

Three different sampling methods were compared with regard to accurate estimation of species richness of crustose and microfoliose lichens in Atlantic rainforest remnants of northeastern Brazil. Quantitative transect sampling yielded three times as many species as non-quantitative opportunistic sampling, even if the number of sampled phorophyte trees was higher on average for the latter method. Repetitive non-quantitative opportunistic sampling of a single site resulted in twice the number of species than one-time sampling, but only two thirds of the number recovered by means of quantitative transect sampling, even of the number of sampled phorophyte trees was highest for this method. The analysis showed that opportunistic sampling fails to detect rare, inconspicuous, sterile, and/or cryptic species, usually neglected or overlooked even by the experienced collector upon visual inspection in the field. On the other hand, quantitative sampling forces even the inexperienced collector to sample lichen thalli or pieces of bark which only after detailed morphological, anatomical, and chemical study in the laboratory reveal themselves as distinct species. Accordingly, of the 456 lichen species collected and identified across the 22 studied localities, no less than 76 were unique to the quantitatively sampled transect, and the lichen species sampled with this method had a significantly higher proportion of rare, inconspicuous, sterile, and/or cryptic species. It is also apparent that it is not the higher number of specimens collected via quantitative sampling that results in a higher number of species, but the method of selection of the specimens, which is subjective and biased towards abundant, conspicuous, fertile and/or distinctive species in opportunistic sampling, but objective and unbiased in quantitative sampling.  相似文献
