Studies of the relationship between heart rate (f(H)) and rate of oxygen consumption (V(.) (O(2))), which are then used to predict field metabolic rate, frequently fail to incorporate body mass as a predictive variable. This is a potentially important omission in the study of animals whose body mass fluctuates substantially during their annual cycle. In an attempt further to improve estimates of field metabolic rate from f(H), we re-evaluated data on M(b), f(H) and V(.) (O(2)) from previous studies of macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) and king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and derived a new relationship to integrate these three quantities. This relationship is at least as accurate and precise as previously determined relationships. We applied this same principle to published data on 11 of the 20 recognised penguin taxa to derive a relationship to predict V(.) (O(2)) from f(H) and M(b) in penguins of any species. This result has interesting implications in terms of reducing the logistical burden in studies of field metabolic rate.  相似文献

Rambouillet sheep were selected for high or low reproductive rate based on an index of reproductive rate, reproductive INDEX = dam's total lifetime lambs born/(age in years-1). Selected ewes were first born in 1969. A random bred control line was established from the remaining foundation ewes with the first ewes born in 1973. Genetic variances were estimated with REML procedures for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing. Heritability of reproductive index was 0.26. Heritability for number of lambs born were 0.11 and 0.12 and for number of lambs weaned were 0.04 and 0.04 per ewe exposed for breeding and per ewe lambing, respectively. Breeding values for the reproductive index were estimated using the full animal model (BLUP) with the complete numerator relationship matrix on reproductive index, with fixed effect of year of birth of ewe and breeding values for number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing, estimated with the fixed effects of year of birth of ewe and age of ewe and the random effect of permanent environmental effect among repeated lambing records. Genetic change was estimated as the regression of breeding value for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing on year of birth of the ewe. High and low lines both responded to selection for reproductive index as compared to the control line (P<0.01). The high line increased at a rate of b = 0.0134 ± 0.0006 reproductive index units and the low line decreased at a rate of b = − 0.0098 ± 0.0005 reproductive index units per year. Response to selection for reproductive index resulted in b = − 0.0074 ± 0.0007 and b = 0.0163 ± 0.0006 lambs per ewe exposed for breeding, and b = − 0.0041 ± 0.0002 and b = 0.0075 ± 0.0002 lambs weaned per ewe exposed for breeding in the low and high lines, respectively. There was a greater response to selection in the high line compared to the low line. These results indicated that the reproductive index did respond to selection.  相似文献

On the basis of the literature and original data, heart rate variability (HRV) in weightlifters has been studied. The results showed that the distribution mode (a parameter of mathematical analysis that is equal to the most frequent length of RR intervals) indicates the intensity of physical exercise. Specific changes in the autonomic balance in athletes as dependent on their degree of training and sports qualification are important characteristics of adaptations to physical loads. For example, the degree of training of weightlifters is reflected by the level of the respiratory component as an index of the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. Adaptation to physical exercise leads to an increase in the power of the spectrum of neurohumoral modulation and to changes in the ratio between the levels of the total spectral power of HRV.  相似文献

The disappearance rate of endogenous renin from the circulating blood after bilateral nephrectomy was studied in 4 puppies aged 16-21 days. Mean half-times of the fast and slow component of the disappearance curves of renin were 9.15 min +/- 0.87 (SD) and 84.0 min +/- 16.8 (SD), respectively. These values are not different from the values reported for adult dogs in the literature. The metabolic degradation of renin is not different between young and adult dogs and does not contribute to the elevated plasma renin activity in the puppy.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) is a cumulative index of metabolic losses during aerobic metabolism. The generalized relationship of oxygen consumption rate (R, n1 O2 ind–1 h–1) and dry body mass (M, µg) for rotifers is described by the equation: R = 9.15M0.716. The level of rotifer metabolism is slightly lower than that of multicellular poikilothermic animals. Differences of OCR values in ontogenesis are substantial. Embryos and senile individuals are characterized by minimal OCR values. The OCR of oviparous females in the beginning of reproduction exceeds 2–3 times OCR values of juveniles. Differences in oxygen consumption intensity (OCI) are not so essential. OCR depends on food concentration. An increase of food concentration from 1.4 to 7.0 µg dry mass m1–1 resulted in Brachionus calyciflorus in an OCR escalation of 2.5 times at 30°C, and 0.5 times at 25°C. Maximal OCR values occur at food concentration close to the saturation concentration for population growth rate. An exponential equation is adequate to describe R-t dependence for animals, long-term adapted to different constant temperatures (2 < Q10 < 3). Acclimation effects observed during sharp temperature changes are determined by peculiarities of compensation reactions in species and separate populations. The formation of a zone of relative temperature independence of OCR (Q10 1) at fluctuating temperature is observed. It is necessary to study enzymatic activities parallel to OCR and OCI measurements.  相似文献

Records (years 2005-2007) were analyzed from a Thoroughbred stud farm in central Kentucky. Data from all breeding cycles of foaling mares were tabulated (3184 cycles of 2003 foaling mares bred between 7 and 163 days postpartum). A multiple logistic regression model employing Bayesian statistics was used to adjust for factors that significantly affected outcome; odds ratios (ORs) for pregnancy rate, pregnancy loss rate, and foaling rate were determined to examine the influence of day of postpartum breeding on these parameters. Mares bred before Day 22 (Day 0 = day of foaling) postpartum had a decreased OR for becoming pregnant (P < 0.05); the median OR for becoming pregnant (1.00) was not reached until Day 46 postpartum. Mares bred before Day 13 postpartum had an increased OR for pregnancy loss (P < 0.05). The median OR for pregnancy loss did not decline below 1.00 until Day 78 postpartum. Mares bred before Day 20 postpartum had a decreased OR for producing a foal (P < 0.05). The median OR for producing a foal (1.00) was not reached until Day 75 postpartum. We concluded that fertility (in terms of a higher OR for becoming pregnant and a lower OR for pregnancy loss, resulting in a higher OR for producing a foal) continued to improve in Thoroughbred mares for approximately 2.5 mo postpartum. These findings are of importance to management strategies directed at early postpartum breeding, and explain some of the reported drift in subsequent foaling dates of Thoroughbred mares, despite management practices that employ early postpartum breeding.  相似文献

The response of continuous cultures of yeast was investigated following step disturbances in glucose feed rate and dilution rate. The responses of the culture to the stimuli were oscillatory. The oscillatory responses were explained in terms of cell synchrony which was induced by the step change. An understanding of continuous cultures to stimuli was made possible with an appreciation of the inherently oscillatory events occurring in the single cell cycle between one mitosis and the next. Step changes in glucose feed rate and dilution rate induced a partial synchrony, which enabled the inherently oscillatory behavior of the individual cells to be made observable in the culture as a whole.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested a genetic component to heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV). However, a systematic examination of the genetic contribution to the variation in HR and HRV has not been performed. This study investigated the genetic contribution to HR and HRV using a wide range of inbred and recombinant inbred (RI) mouse strains. Electrocardiogram data were recorded from 30 strains of inbred mice and 29 RI strains. Significant differences in mean HR and total power (TP) HRV were identified between inbred strains and RI strains. Multiple significant differences within the strain sets in mean low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) power were also found. No statistically significant concordance was found between strain distribution patterns for HR and HRV phenotypes. Genomewide interval mapping identified a significant quantitative trait locus (QTL) for HR [LOD (likelihood of the odds) score = 3.763] on chromosome 6 [peak at 53.69 megabases (Mb); designated HR 1 (Hr1)]. Suggestive QTLs for TP were found on chromosomes 2, 4, 5, 6, and 14. A suggestive QTL for LF was found on chromosome 16; for HF, we found one significant QTL on chromosome 5 (LOD score = 3.107) [peak at 53.56 Mb; designated HRV-high-frequency 1 (Hrvhf1)] and three suggestive QTLs on chromosomes 2, 11 and 15. In conclusion, the results demonstrate a strong genetic component in the regulation of resting HR and HRV evidenced by the significant differences between strains. A lack of correlation between HR and HRV phenotypes in some inbred strains suggests that different sets of genes control the phenotypes. Furthermore, QTLs were found that will provide important insight to the genetic regulation of HR and HRV at rest.  相似文献

The male infant rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) undergoes a period of testicular activation similar to that seen in the human infant. Plasma testosterone (T) concentrations rise after birth, reaching levels of about 500 ng/dl at 1-3 mo of age and then fall to approximately 50 ng/dl at 60 mo. The plasma T metabolic clearance rates (MCRT) and production rates (PRT) were measured in two rhesus infants at 1 and 6 mo of age to determine the mechanism of the observed increase in plasma T. While there was little change in the MCRT between 1 and 6 mo, PRT was much higher at 1 mo than at 60 mo of age. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the increased plasma testosterone levels in infant rhesus monkeys reflect an increased production of testosterone rather than an altered metabolic disposition of the hormone.  相似文献

Using chemostat cultures of Escherichia coli it was possible to vary respiration rates while maintaining a constant growth rate. This allowed the effect of variations in respiration rates on the accumulation of streptomycin to be studied in cultures at constant growth rates. At a particular dilution rate cultures exhibited higher respiration rates when phosphate limited growth than when carbon limited growth. A ubiquinone-deficient strain had a lower rate of respiration at a particular dilution rate than a related ubiquinone-sufficient strain. In spite of these differences in respiratory activity, the accumulation of streptomycin was identical in carbon- and in phosphate-limited chemostat cultures of ubiquinone-deficient and ubiquinone-sufficient strains. Moreover, accumulation of streptomycin in an anaerobic chemostat culture occurred at the same rate as that in an aerobic chemostat. There was however a lag of 1.5 h before accumulation commenced in the anaerobic culture, a feature that was not apparent in the aerobic culture. These results indicate that the lower rates of respiration in slow-growing bacteria are not responsible for the decreased accumulation of streptomycin in slow-growing compared to fast-growing cultures. Moreover, it seems unlikely that quinones are involved directly (e.g. as carriers) in streptomycin accumulation, since removal of 90% of cellular ubiquinone, or replacement of ubiquinone with a structural analogue, did not affect accumulation as long as mutant and parent cultures grew at the same rate.  相似文献

Developmental time and body size correlate with lifespan in a wide range of taxa, although not in insect parasitoids. When the rate of development is independent of adult metabolic rate, adult lifespan is free to adapt to the adult environment. We suggest that interspecific variation in intrinsic adult metabolic rates, differences in allocation of lipids to longevity, and reproduction and differences in the ability to use carbohydrates as an adult should all result in variation of adult lifespan, independent of development time. To test these ideas, we measured metabolic rate, lipid content and egg load at eclosion, developmental time, and lifespan of females with and without carbohydrate food in five species of Asobara, which represent parasitoids of Drosophila. No relationship between development time and adult longevity was found. As predicted, metabolic rates varied between species and appeared to trade off with adult longevity. We found no clear link between initial egg load and the longevity of a species, suggesting that lipid allocation may be less important in determining adult lifespan. The results obtained indicate that differences in metabolic rate have an important effect on adult lifespan, without affecting developmental rate in parasitoids. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 45–56.  相似文献

Background:

Heart rate and heart rate variability, markers of cardiac autonomic function, have been linked with cardiovascular disease. We investigated whether heart rate and heart rate variability are associated with functional status in older adults, independent of cardiovascular disease.

Methods:

We obtained data from the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). A total of 5042 participants were included in the present study, and mean follow-up was 3.2 years. Heart rate and heart rate variability were derived from baseline 10-second electrocardiograms. Heart rate variability was defined as the standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN). Functional status in basic (ADL) and instrumental (IADL) activities of daily living was measured using Barthel and Lawton scales, at baseline and during follow-up.

Results:

The mean age of the study population was 75.3 years. At baseline, higher heart rate was associated with worse ADL and IADL, and lower SDNN was related to worse IADL (all p values < 0.05). Participants in the highest tertile of heart rate (range 71–117 beats/min) had a 1.79-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.45–2.22) and 1.35-fold (95% CI 1.12–1.63) higher risk of decline in ADL and IADL, respectively (p for trend < 0.001 and 0.001, respectively). Participants in the lowest tertile of SDNN (range 1.70–13.30 ms) had 1.21-fold (95% CI 1.00–1.46) and 1.25-fold (95% CI 1.05–1.48) higher risk of decline in ADL and IADL, respectively (both p for trends < 0.05). All associations were independent of sex, medications, cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities.

Interpretation:

Higher resting heart rate and lower heart rate variability were associated with worse functional status and with higher risk of future functional decline in older adults, independent of cardiovascular disease. This study provides insight into the role of cardiac autonomic function in the development of functional decline.Elevated heart rate and reduced heart rate variability — the beat-to-beat variation in heart rate intervals — both reflect an altered balance of the autonomic nervous system tone characterized by increased sympathetic and/or decreased parasympathetic activity.13 Sympathetic overactivity has been linked to a procoagulant state and also to risk factors for atherosclerosis, including metabolic syndrome, obesity and subclinical inflammation.24 Moreover, increased heart rate is related to atherosclerosis, not only as an epiphenomenon of sympathetic overactivity, but also through hemodynamic mechanisms, such as high pulsatile shear stress, which leads to endothelial dysfunction.5Atherosclerosis has been linked to increased risk of functional decline in older people via cardiovascular events.6 As the world population is aging, the burden of functional disability is expected to increase.6 It has been hypothesized that heart rate and heart rate variability are markers of frailty, an increased vulnerability to stressors and functional decline.7 However, the direct link between these 2 parameters and risk of functional decline has not been fully established, and it is uncertain whether this association is independent of cardiovascular comorbidities.In this study, we examined whether heart rate and heart rate variability were cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with functional status in older adults at high risk of cardiovascular disease, independent of cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities.  相似文献

The limitations of heart rate as a predictor of metabolic rate in fish   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Although telemetered heart rate (fH) has been used as a physiological correlate to predict the metabolic rate (as oxygen consumption, V?O2) of fish in the field, it is our contention that the method has not been validated adequately for fish. If fH in fish is to be used to estimate V?O2, a single linear (or log-linear) relationship must be established for each species between the two variables which allows V?O2 to be predicted accurately under all environmentally relevant conditions. Our analyses of existing data indicate that while a good linear (or log-linear) relationship can be established between fH and V?O2, the conditions under which the relationship applies may be quite restricted. Physiological states and environmental factors affect the relationship between fH and V?O2 significantly such that several curves can exist for a single species. In addition, there are situations in which fH and V?O2 do not covary in a significant manner. In some situations fH can vary over much of its physiological range while V?O2 remains constant; in others V?O2 may vary while fH is invariate. The theoretical basis for this variability is examined to explain why the use of telemetered fH in predicting V?O2 of fish may be limited to certain specified applications.  相似文献

Summary Hybridoma IND1 viability was 95% for dilution rates (D) ranging from 45 to 100% of max (0.037 hr–1). Over this range, the cell concentration and total protein content increased with D. Washout occurred at D=0.041 hr–1, but the intracellular protein content continued to increase. The high- and low-content modes of the intracellular antibody distribution did not vary with D. The fraction of cells with high antibody content decreased with time, except for an increase at D=0.041 hr–1. Summary Equations are described which relate nutrient feed rate to specific microbial growth rate in fed batch culture. Fed batch cultures are classified into three types: 1) those allowing constant specific microbial growth rate, 2) those in which the rate of change of flow rate is constant and 3) those in which the nutrient flow rate is constant. Measurements of annual litterfall rate and mean annual litter mass for various indigenous open-forests are listed, along with the consequent decomposition constant (k) and mean annual rainfall. Using data only from sites considered valid for comparison (i.e. all those with a sclerophyllous plant understorey, not recently burnt, grazed or invaded by an exotic decomposer, and where for accuracy of assessment the litter layer has been sampled on several occasions) a quadratic relationship between litterfall rate and litter mass was significant, with decomposition rates at sites increasing with increasing litterfall rate. The existence of such a relationship may be useful for future studies: if litter data obtained lie appreciably outside the values on the line of quadratic regression, it would be worthwhile checking the accuracy of litterfall and mass estimates, site past history and the validity of the decomposition constant estimate. There was a significant positive linear relationship between the decomposition constant and mean annual rainfall at sites where rainfall was within the range 600–1800 mm y-1, the general limits for open-forest site development. However, more data are required to increase the predictive value of relationship.  相似文献
