Mother-infant separation in rhesus monkey living in natural environment   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Four mothers were separated from the infants in two free-ranging groups of rhesus monkeys. Infants were observed for three stages i.e. pre-separation, separation, and post-separation. Separation caused a marked decrease in play in the infant. Crying and restlessness increased. During post-separation, a significant increase in mother's approach behaviour towards the infant was observed. The results of the present field study almost resemble the results of laboratory studies done bySeay, Hansen, andHarlow (1962).  相似文献

Three isosexual social groups, each containing ten subadult female hamadryas monkeys (Papio hamadryas) were studied for seven months to test three hypotheses dealing with the assumptions underlyingSeyfarth's (1977) model of allogrooming and social organization. Aggression, avoid and allogrooming behaviors were used as criteria for studying the social organization of the groups. UsingLandau's (1951) index and discriminant analyses, we found that each of the three isosexual female social units conformed to a model of social organization having a non-linear hierarchy and only two major strata: a dominant animal and subordinates who were largely undifferentiated. This aspect of social organization is similar to the normal one-male unit leader harem form of social organization that is typical of hamadryas. However, since no male was present, the role of unit leader was filled by a female. The length of allogrooming bouts and the amount of allogroom received was affected by the social status of the recipient, with high status individuals receiving more than low status individuals. Social peers were not observed competing for access to high status individuals and did not exchange most of their grooming among themselves. We found that the assumptions underlyingSeyfarth's (1977) model were not appropriate for the type of social organization typically found in hamadryas monkeys, thus suggesting the need for further modification of the model so that it fits available data.  相似文献

Two new chiral monochloro-s-triazines (MCT) were synthesized [viz N-(4-chloro-6-piperidinyl-[1,3,5]-triazine-2-yl)-l-leucine amide and N-(4-chloro-6-piperidinyl-[1,3,5]-triazine-2-yl)-l-leucine) (CDR 1 and 2, respectively)] by the nucleophilic displacement of chlorine atoms in s-triazine moiety. One of the Cl atoms was replaced with piperidine, and the second Cl atom in the 6-piperidinyl derivative was replaced with amino acid amide (viz l-Leu–NH2) and amino acid (l-Leu). These reagents were characterized and used as CDRs for chiral separation of protein and non-protein amino acids, and were separated on a reversed-phase C18 column. The reaction conditions were optimized for the synthesis of diastereomers using one MCT reagent. The separation method was validated for limit of detection, linearity, accuracy, precision, and recovery.  相似文献

A field cage for Old World primates designed to encourage natural behavior   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The construction of an all-weather field cage housing Old World primates (Macaca fuscata) is described. The 40 × 40 foot enclosure includes some simulated aspects of the animals' natural environment thereby encouraging natural behavior. The animals are observed from a tower equiped with one-way glass to eliminate the animals' being aware of observers. By using prefabricated construction and adaptations of standard supplies and equipment, the cage and tower were constructed at a cost of $7,000.The construction and design of the field-cage were supported by many persons whose suggestions are present in the final design. The original design was produced by the first author during a conference on Primate Outdoor Housing arranged at the Yerkes Primate Center in October, 1969.Walter Geiger andJohn Bell were responsible for suggesting and locating suitable materials and for overseeing the construction. As they came to understand the purpose of the project, the special types of problems involved, and the nature of the monkeys (who were housed temporarily near the construction site), the workmen assigned to the project provided us with many imaginative and useful suggestions (such as the idea of turning the walls inside-out). The project was very much a group project, and we would like to acknowledge especially the members of the university physical plant staff who contributed to the success of the project.Funds for the field-cage were provided, in part, from a NSF COSIP grant to Bucknell University.  相似文献

Research has suggested that a social separation during a macaque's infancy may result in later deficiencies in maternal behavior, as well as in reduced sociability. The present study examined whether monkeys now living in an all-peer group who had experienced a maternal separation 1.5 to 3 years prior to the time of these observations, displayed persisting social deficits. Using multivariate techniques, prior separation history, as well as several demographic variables were examined as to their role in explaining the observed variation in measures of social behavior and preference. The results indicated that, as compared to nonseparated controls, previously separated monkeys played less, displayed social preferences to fewer animals, displayed fewer contact preferences, and showed reciprocated preferences to fewer individuals. In addition, several gender and rank-related effects were found. In terms of the identities of the preferred partners, individuals preferred animals from the same natal group. The results support the notion that an early separation experience can result in long-term social impairment, although the effects appear to be subtle.  相似文献

The form of the talus in some higher primates: a multivariate study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sixteen measurements of the talus have been taken on 334 tali of a total of eleven primate groups and several additional single individual specimens. Multivariate morphometric (canonical and generalized distance) analyses of these data in extant higher primates are presented and used to define the relative morphological positions of fossils of the genera Proconsul and Limnopithecus, of individual specimens from Kromdraai, Olduvai and Kiik-Koba (Homo neanderthalensis), and a group of specimens of Bronze Age man from Jericho. Following preliminary studies the ultimate analysis suggests that the various extant arboreal primates examined fall within an envelope that is defined by Macaca together with various other Old World monkeys and extending in different directions to the extreme genera (a) Pongo, (b) Hylobates and (c) Ateles. This separation is thus one which defines generally quadrupedal monkeys and separates the various extreme arboreal locomotor modes of (a) acrobatic climbing and hanging, (b) richochetal brachiation and (c) prehensile-tailed arm-swinging and hanging, respectively. Man and the African apes are well separated both from each other and from this spectrum of arboreally adapted genera. Bronze Age man from Jericho and Neandertal man from Kiik-Koba lie relatively close to the position for modern man although significantly separated from him. Limnopithecus, Proconsul, and the specimens from Kromdraai and Olduvai all lie within the envelope of arboreal species and specifically rather close to, although significantly different from, the orang-utan; they differ markedly from both man and the African apes. The possibility exists that the resemblances of Proconsul and Limnopithecus relate to arboreal habitus in these species. The findings for the specimens from Kromdraai and Olduvai suggest either that the morphological resemblances to arboreal forms relate to a previous arboreal history for these species, or that bipedality is much less advanced or uniquely different from that displayed by Homo. It is not inconceivable that both conditions might apply.  相似文献

Orotidine-5-monophosphate pyrophosphorylase (OMPppase, E.C. 2.4.2.10) and orotidylate decarboxylase (OMPdecase, E.C. 4.1.1.23) were purified from Serratia marcescens HY. These enzymes required physical association for maximal catalytic activities and formed a fragile complex with dihydroorotase (DHOase, E.C. 3.5.2.3.). OMPppase reversibly lost 50% of its activity upon separation from DHOase. The kinetic characteristics of OMPppase were modified by this separation. In the presence of DHOase, the K ms for PRPP and orotate were stoichiometric: 2.3×10–6 m and 2.6×10–6 m, respectively. Following separation, the K ms were significantly different: 1.3 × 10–6 m for PRPP and 4.1×10–6 m for orotate. OMPppase and OMPdecase could be reversibly separated by acrylamide gel electrophoresis, but the separation was accompanied by a loss of catalytic efficiency for both enzymes. DHOase readily associated into multiple molecular forms and could not be purified. The DHOase-OMPppase-OMPdecase interactions demonstrate that a weakly aggregated, multifunctional enzyme complex participates in the biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides in S. marcescens. This unique association of nonsequential biosynthetic enzymes may represent a larger complex which provides a channeling or regulatory unit.This work was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF GB 5811) and the Office of Naval Research (Nonr 4413). There are 19 species in genusMacaca and some of them are living in sympatry (Fooden, 1980). Although inter-specific hybrids are relatively easy to produce under artificial conditions, hybridization does not occur naturally. What is preventing that among the species of genusMacaca? Three rhesus monkeys acquired a discrimination between pictures with rhesus monkeys and without rhesus monkeys. All subjects showed positive transfer of this discrimination to new pictures with rhesus monkeys and without rhesus monkeys. A further test showed that these monkeys could discriminate between pictures of rhesus monkeys and pictures of Japanese monkeys. The results suggest that rhesus monkeys recognize rhesus monkeys as a class, independent of the actual stimuli such as a picture or an individual monkey. The ability to recognize members of their own species and the opportunities for such learning may be an important factor preventing hybridization among the species of genusMacaca.  相似文献

In studies performed during 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1991, in the seasonally flooded forest of the Napo and Nanay river basin, we recorded seven instances of cohabitation in night monkeys,Aotus vociferans. Cohabitation refers to the sharing of a sleeping site of one species of animal with other different species of animals (Aquino & Encarnacion, 1986). We also recorded two instances of cooccupation of night monkeys with other species of nocturnal mammals. Cooccupation refers to the independent use of different sleeping sites within the same tree by two or more species of animals. This study is the first report of cooccupation within the generaAotus. Forty-five sleeping trees with entrance holes were used by the night monkeys. In addition, one sleeping site was observed in a small concavity of the foliar sheath on aMauritia flexuosa palm.  相似文献

Some non-protein α-amino acids were derivatized with 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-l-alaninamide (Marfey’s reagent, MR, FDNP-l-Ala-NH2,) and four of its structural variants FDNP-l-Phe-NH2, FDNP-l-Val-NH2, FDNP-l-Leu-NH2 and FDNP-l-Pro-NH2. The resultant diastereomers were separated by normal and reversed phase thin layer chromatography (TLC) and reversed phase HPLC. In normal phase TLC, best resolution was obtained with solvent combination of phenol-water (3:1) while in reversed phase TLC mixtures of acetonitrile with triethylammonium phosphate buffer were found successful for resolution of diastereomers. The separation behavior of diastereomers prepared with different reagents was compared. The diastereomers of most of the amino acids prepared with FDNP-l-Leu-NH2 were best separated while those prepared with FDNP-l-Pro-NH2 failed to separate in most of the cases. The diastereomers were also separated on a reversed phase C8 column with gradient elution using mixture of aqueous-trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and acetonitrile and with detection at 340 nm. The effects of TFA concentration, flow rate and run time on HPLC separation were studied.  相似文献

Some differences between the muscular system of three species of golden monkeys were shown. The major features of the myology in these animals, besides that ofCercopithecoidea, are similar to the anthropoid apes and humans. Although most of the features between taxa of golden monkeys are largely homologous, there are also some differences. Our results differ slightly from thosePatterson (1942) obtained inR. roxellanae. Some conclusions reported by Patterson were obviously incorrect, since the specimen he used did not have a head. Many mylogical characters are similar to other species ofCercopithecoidea while some resemble those of apes. Many are similar to those of the leaf monkey, though some of them show much more development. The golden monkey is more advanced than any other species ofCercopithecoidea. We hypothesize that in terms of the myological characters the golden monkeys seem to occupy a position between the leaf monkeys and the apes.  相似文献

Using a conditioning paradigm, the olfactory sensitivity of five CD-1 mice for the l- and d-forms of cysteine, methionine, and proline was investigated. With all six stimuli, the animals discriminated concentrations ≤0.1 ppm (parts per million) from the odorless solvent, and with three of the six stimuli the best-scoring animals were even able to detect concentrations <0.1 ppb (parts per billion). Three spider monkeys tested in parallel were found to detect the same six stimuli at concentrations <1 ppm, and with four of the six stimuli the best-scoring animals detected concentrations ≤1 ppb. Both CD-1 mice and spider monkeys displayed a higher olfactory sensitivity with the l- and d-forms of cysteine and methionine than with the prolines, suggesting an important role of the sulfur-containing functional groups for detectability. Accordingly, the across-odorant patterns of detection thresholds obtained with mice and spider monkeys showed a significant positive correlation. A comparison of the detection thresholds between the two species tested here and those obtained in human subjects suggests that neither the number of functional olfactory receptor genes nor the absolute or the relative size of the olfactory bulbs reliably predicts a species’ olfactory sensitivity for amino acids.  相似文献

Ten chimpanzees (Pan troglogytes), aged 18–24 months, housed without mothers as two dyads and two triads, were subjected to social separation. Two issues were addressed: the effects of peer separation in chimpanzees; and differential responses by subjects living in dyads compared with those living in triads. Chimpanzees that were alone during separation reacted with high levels of “protest” alternating with “despair” throughout the separation period. The continued presence of one cagemate, during separation from a third, was a strong mitigating factor. Even when the primary attachment was formed with the absent cagemate, the remaining chimpanzees clung to each other and the levels of protest and despair, when present, were low. Upon reunion, neither “detachment” nor heightened levels of clinging were conspicuous, but there was increased social interaction. The data on separation of chimpanzees are intermediate between those of humans and monkeys separated from mothers or peers. The increased social interactions during reunion, including looking, are comparable to the visual vigilance reported for humans.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate simple behavioral enrichment procedures for a captive group of tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). We examined the effects of providing a manipulatable substrate (straw) and a variety of portable objects in the monkeys' home cage. The animals were observed across three conditions in two replications: 1) No portable objects were present; 2) a set of six identical portable objects was present; and 3) a set of six varied portable objects was present. The cage floor was bare in the first replication; straw was uniformly spread on the cage floor in the second replication. An 18-month period of qualitative note taking followed completion of the initial data collection phase. The presence of straw and portable objects affected patterns of affiliation by decreasing quiet contact and close proximity. Providing additional manipulative opportunities affected both the form and frequency of object-directed activities. Object contacts were directed toward a greater variety of targets, and some objects were spontaneously used as tools. Manipulation of provided objects and use of objects as tools have become routine activities in this group of monkeys. We conclude that providing straw and portable objects in an already well equipped cage is an effective means of long-term behavioral enrichment for captive capuchin monkeys. Enabling captive capuchins to express species-typical manipulative tendencies is apparently conducive to the monkeys' optimal physical and psychological well-being as well as interesting to the human observer.  相似文献

This study attempted to describe the pattern of social affiliations in a colony of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Key Lois Island, Florida. Monkeys arrived to Key Lois in nine distinct groups that were held in a 50×100 ft enclosure for between 30 and 60 days and then released. The data consisted of observations of groups of monkeys seen together at various times in various locations. The study tested the hypothesis that monkeys that were in the same quarantine group would more frequently be seen together in the free-range than monkeys from different quarantine groups. The hypothesis was confirmed in seven of the nine groups. Chi-square =2137.1 (p<.001),Cohen’s kappa =.38 (p<.001) (1960). Prior common group membership was found to be predictive of future social affiliations. Explanations of residual kin structure from India, the effect of a primary social experience in a new environment, and the possibility of in-group versus out-group forces between the successively introduced groups were advanced as possible reasons for the findings.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the effects of sustained near vision stimulation, on the refractive development and elongation of the vitreous chamber in adolescent rhesus monkeys. A total of 12 adolescent rhesus monkeys (1.5–2.0 years old) were randomly assigned to 3 groups. In groups A (n=4) and B (n=4), monkeys were reared in close-vision cages for 8 and 4 h d−1, respectively; tiny granules were added on the cage floor to avoid visual deprivation and to encourage near gaze. In group C (n=4), monkeys were reared in open-vision cages, with non-granule food as a control. Vitreous chamber depth, refractive status, and corneal refractive power were assessed over 18 months. Paired t-test was used to compare the differences and a P-value<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. In group A, vitreous chamber depth and optical axis elongated significantly, and refractive error shifted towards myopia during the observation period. In group B, vitreous chambers and optical axis elongated but the refractive power did not show significant changes. In group C, there was no significant elongation in vitreous chambers and optical axis, and the refractive power changed slightly towards hypermetropia. There were no significant changes in corneal refractive power in each group. Sustained near vision can promote vitreous chamber growth and induce myopic shifts in refractive power in adolescent monkeys. Our results demonstrate the potential for a primate model of near-work-related myopia.  相似文献

On the basis of 44 hindlimbs of 14 male and 14 female crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), the morphology of the adductor muscles of the thigh was described and some functional indices were calculated. The results obtained from this study agreed generally with those of otherMacaca species reported by various authors. For the classification and nomenclature of the adductors, the criteria proposed byUhlmann (1967, 1968) was well adapted to the crab-eating monkey. The adductors comprise the m. gracilis, m. pectineus, m. adductor longus, pars longa and pars brevis of m. adductor brevis, pars lata and pars minima of m. adductor magnus and m. obturatorius externus. In males, the adductors are generally inserted further down the femur, and the insertions of pars brevis of the m. adductor brevis and pars minima of the m. adductor magnus have longer attachments to the femur than in females. The arrangement of each adductor muscle and of each fasciculus of a thigh muscle may invoke a principle of organization.  相似文献

On the basis of 28 hindlimbs of nine male and eight female crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), the morphology of the flexor muscles of the thigh are described and some functional indices calculated, and these results are compared with those of some other primates. The results obtained from this study agreed generally with those of otherMacaca species. In general, the functional indices devised byStern (1971) did not show any significant differences between the right and left hindlimbs or between male and female monkeys, except for the index expressing the level of insertion of the m. biceps femoris on the tibia. The m. biceps femoris inserts further down the leg in females than in males.  相似文献

Oligosaccharides from theO-polysaccharide chain of theSalmonella typhi 253Ty lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were prepared from delipidated LPS by digestion with bacteriophage P22. The oligosaccharides were separated by gel chromatography into fractions representing monomers to polymers of the basic tetrasaccharide repeating unit. Fractions containing the dimer and the trimer were analysed by fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry as methylated alditols. The mass spectra clearly showed heterogeneity in terms ofd-glucose substitution of thed-galactose residue in the tetrasaccharide repeating unit: dimers with none, one, or twod-glucosyl branches and trimers with none, one, two, or threed-glucosyl branches were found. This suggests a randomd-glucosylation of theO-polysaccharide chain ofS. typhi 253Ty.  相似文献
