The ultrastructural study on the fat body of gynes (virgin queens) of the basal ant species Cyphomyrmex rimosus and Mycetarotes parallelus and the derived Acromyrmex disciger and Atta laevigata queens showed vesicular rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, and mitochondria in trophocytes, suggesting the involvement of these cells in protein synthesis, in addition to digestive vacuoles associated with the digestion of endocytosed compounds or rejected cell organelles. Oenocytes, another cell type present in the fat body of these species exhibit mitochondria, digestive vacuoles, and vesicles, indicating a mobilization of compounds by these cells. In A. laevigata, oenocytes also exhibited large storage sites of glycogen, in addition to a well-developed vesicular rough endoplasmic reticulum, suggesting an intensive participation of these cells in protein synthesis. The ultrastructural cytochemistry study also revealed electrodense granules of basic proteins present throughout the cytoplasm of trophocytes. The same was observed in oenocytes, although with smaller amounts of proteins. In the cytoplasm of trophocytes and oenocytes were also found droplets or electrodense granules of lipids. In oenocytes of A. disciger and in trophocytes of A. laevigata, lipids were observed in mitochondria, suggesting that this organelle might be a site of synthesis of these compounds. The chemical analysis of lipids revealed that in gynes, the main compounds present in fat body cells were saturated fatty acids, while in queens, saturated as well as unsaturated fatty acids were found. In conclusion, the present study showed that the fat body cells of gynes and queens, in general, maintained the same compounds and original features through the evolution process of the Attini tribe. 相似文献

Background and Aims
Many aquatic species with stylar polymorphisms have the capacity for clonal and sexual reproduction and are sensitive to the balance of the two reproductive modes when there are a limited number of mating morphs within a population. This study asked how the clonal and sexual reproductive modes perform in populations that contain only a single morph and where fitness gain through sexual reproduction is rare. In clonal aquatic Nymphoides montana, polymorphic populations normally contain two mating morphs in equal frequencies. Populations are sexually fertile and appear to be maintained by pollen transfer between the two partners. However, in a monomorphic population of N. montana where mating opportunities are unavailable, female and male function is impaired and clonality maintains the population. Here, the consequences of intraspecific variation in sexuality were explored between monomorphic and polymorphic N. montana populations in eastern Australia. Methods
Comparative measurements of male and female fertility, total dry mass and genotypic diversity using ISSR markers were made between populations with variable sexuality.Key Results and Conclusions
Very few seeds were produced in the monomorphic population under natural and glasshouse conditions due to dysfunctional pollen and ovules. Stigma–anther separation was minimal in the monomorphic population, which may be a consequence of the relaxed selective pressures that regulate the maintenance of sexual function. However, clonal reproduction was favoured at the expense of sexual reproduction in the monomorphic population; this may facilitate the establishment of sterility throughout the population via resource reallocation or pleiotropic effects. The ISSR results showed that the monomorphic population was one large, single genotype, unlike the multi-genotypic fertile polymorphic populations. Evolutionary loss of sex in a clonal population in which a mating morph is absent was evident; under these conditions clonal growth may assure reproduction and expand the population via spreading stolons. 相似文献3.
Abstract Aims Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of the Baja California peninsula are poorly known, with information based largely on scattered museum and literature records. We provide the first comprehensive account of ant species occurring on the peninsula, we examine distribution patterns, and we assess the ‘peninsular effect’ which predicts that species richness declines from the base to the tip of a peninsula. Location Peninsula of Baja California, Mexico. Methods Data collection involved examining, identifying and recording label data from c. 2350 series of ants. These records provide a provisional, if incomplete, species list. We applied the incidence‐based estimator, Chao‐2, to our data base of specimen records to estimate the total number of ant species on the peninsula. We assessed endemism by comparing our peninsular species list to those from adjacent states. The peninsular effect was tested by comparing genus and species level richness between the two states of Baja California, and across five latitudinal blocks. Results We document 170 native ant species in thirty‐three genera, plus six non‐native species, in Baja California. It seems likely that additional species remain to be discovered: the Chao‐2 estimator of species richness, at 206.0 species, is about 20% higher than our observed species richness. About 30% of the species and 20% of the genera are restricted within Baja California to the relatively mesic California Floristic Province of north‐western Baja California. Nearly all of these species also occur in California. Forty‐seven species (27.6%) are peninsula endemics. Using our entire data set, the peninsular effect appears to be strong, with about twice as many species in the northern state of Baja California than are recorded from the southern state of Baja California Sur; the ratio of genera is 33 to 24. However, this effect becomes weak at the species level and absent at the genus level when minimizing habitat effects by omitting species restricted to the California Floristic Province. At a finer scale, across latitudinal blocks of about 1.9°, the number of species declines towards central portions of the peninsula and then increases in the Cape Region. Nine ant species display strongly disjunct distributions, and these occur in two general patterns: peninsula disjuncts and peninsula–mainland disjuncts. Main conclusions The Baja California peninsula supports a diverse and distinctive ant fauna, with the proportion of endemic species similar to that displayed by plants. Patterns of species and genus richness across the five latitudinal blocks provide poor support for the peninsular effect. Moreover, habitat diversity, especially that related to topographic relief, appears to be the most important factor affecting the gradient of ant species richness in Baja California. Additional collections are needed to develop a more complete species list and to determine the boundaries and status of many species. Nevertheless, the present data base provides a useful starting point for understanding the evolution of ant assemblages in Baja California and for comparison with peninsular patterns in other taxa. 相似文献

Predation on lizard eggs by ants: species interactions in a variable physical environment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
One explanation for long-term fluctuations in population density is that the intensity of interactions between species is variable. A population can experience variation in the intensity of a species interaction if (1) the density of species with which it directly interacts changes and/or (2) the strength of the interaction (i.e., per capita effects) changes. At Barro Colorado Island, Panama, the tropical lizard Anolis limifrons exhibits wide annual fluctuations in density. Previous studies have indicated that (1) the density of A. limifrons is negatively correlated with the amount of wet-season rainfall, (2) fluctuations in density are related more to variation in egg mortality than to variation in lizard mortality or to fecundity, and (3) most egg mortality is the result of predation by Solenopsis ants. We hypothesized that the amount of wet-season rainfall indirectly alters the density of A. limifrons by producing variation in the intensity of egg predation by Solenopsis. Additionally, we also wanted to determine if variation in the amount of egg mortality was influenced more by variation in the density of Solenopsis, or by variation in the rate of predation. We tested this hypothesis by manipulating litter moisture on experimental plots to simulate the wettest (HW) and driest (LW) wet seasons in the last 20 years, and then monitoring the density of Solenopsis, amount of egg mortality, and rate of predation. The amount of egg mortality was greater on the HW than on the LW treatment and all egg mortality resulted from predation by Solenopsis. ANCOVA indicated that the amount of egg mortality was significantly higher on plots with a greater density of Solenopsis. Treatment effects, however, explained more of the variation in the amount of egg mortality than did Solenopsis density. Our water manipulations did not change the density of Solenopsis, but Solenopsis found and attacked eggs faster on the HW than on the LW treatment. This suggests that moisture during the wet season modified the strength of the interaction between Solenopsis and A. limifrons, supporting the hypothesis that annual variation in the amount of wet-season rainfall indirectly produces parallel variation in annual density of lizard populations by modifying the rate of ant predation on eggs. Difficulties in controlling outbreaks of Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, have obstructed the widespread adoption of biological control in many ornamental crops. The efficacy of the predatory mite, Neoseiulus cucumeris, in controlling F. occidentalis on two cultivars of cyclamen was tested in glasshouse experiments. The establishment and development of F. occidentalis populations was compared in three treatment introductions of N. cucumeris (50, 200 and 350 mites m -2 per week) and an untreated control. F. occidentalis were sampled in the flowers over eight weeks and counted into different life stages. No differences were observed between the two cultivars. All treatments with the predator resulted in a decline in numbers of F. occidentalis compared to the untreated control. Although the proportion of first instar F. occidentalis was similar in all treatments, the level of control varied with the number of N. cucumeris introduced. Lower populations of F. occidentalis, combined with a more rapid decline in their numbers, were observed at the 200 and 350 mites m -2 rates. Numbers of F. occidentalis remained low in the 350 N. cucumeris m -2 rate and the proportion of second instar F. occidentalis in the samples was consistently lower than in the other treatments. Trap counts of adult F. occidentalis were strongly correlated with the numbers of both adult and total F. occidentalis in flower samples. High inoculative releases of N. cucumeris early in the flowering cycle followed by frequent low introductions of predators should provide a strong basis for preventative control of F. occidentalis and other thrips species on cyclamen. 相似文献

The aim of the present investigation is to compare two geographically well separated populations ofC. afra with different mating systems with emphasis on (1) factors controlling the length of the male phase with special attention paid on the pollen collecting hairs, (2) crossing ability among populations with different mating systems; shouldC. afra be regarded as one or several species?, and (3) correlations between pollen germinability and mating system; how does pollen germinability vary with anthesis and stigma development? From the results it can be concluded that the length of the male phase and the development of the stigma depend on the stimulation of the pollen collecting hairs rather than on the amount of pollen removed. Furthermore, the length of the male phase was found to be correlated with the mating system, i.e., in the population with a mixed mating system, the differences between treated and untreated flowers were less pronounced than in the population being obligately outcrossing. I also found correlations between mating system and pollen germinability, where the population with a mixed mating system had a high germinability at stigma receptivity, whereas for the xenogamous population, the germinability approached zero at stigma development. No crossing incompatibility was found between the two populations ofCampanula afra in any of the combinations. 相似文献

The small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMOs) regulate many essential cellular functions. Only one type of SUMO-interacting motif (SIM) has been identified that can extend the β-sheet of SUMO as either a parallel or an antiparallel strand. The molecular determinants of the bound orientation and paralogue specificity of a SIM are unclear. To address this question, we have conducted structural studies of SUMO1 in complex with a SUMO1-specific SIM that binds to SUMO1 with high affinity without post-translational modifications using nuclear magnetic resonance methods. In addition, the SIM sequence requirements have been investigated by peptide arrays in comparison with another high affinity SIM that binds in the opposing orientation. We found that antiparallel binding SIMs tolerate more diverse sequences, whereas the parallel binding SIMs prefer the more strict sequences consisting of (I/V)DLT that have a preference in high affinity SUMO2 and -3 binding. Comparison of two high affinity SUMO1-binding SIMs that bind in opposing orientations has revealed common SUMO1-specific interactions needed for high affinity binding. This study has significantly advanced our understanding of the molecular determinants underlining SUMO-SIM recognition. 相似文献

We reviewed the evidence on the role of ants as plant biotic defenses, by conducting meta-analyses for the effects of experimental
removal of ants on plant herbivory and fitness with data pooled from 81 studies. Effects reviewed were plant herbivory, herbivore
abundance, hemipteran abundance, predator abundance, plant biomass and reproduction in studies where ants were experimentally
removed (n = 273 independent comparisons). Ant removal exhibited strong effects on herbivory rates, as plants without ants suffered
almost twice as much damage and exhibited 50% more herbivores than plants with ants. Ants also influenced several parameters
of plant fitness, as plants without ants suffered a reduction in biomass (−23.7%), leaf production (−51.8%), and reproduction
(−24.3%). Effects were much stronger in tropical regions compared to temperate ones. Tropical plants suffered almost threefold
higher herbivore damage than plants from temperate regions and exhibited three times more herbivores. Ant removal in tropical
plants resulted in a decrease in plant fitness of about 59%, whereas in temperate plants this reduction was not statistically
significant. Ant removal effects were also more important in obligate ant–plants (=myrmecophytes) compared to plants exhibiting
facultative relationships with hemiptera or those plants with extrafloral nectaries and food bodies. When only tropical plants
were considered and the strength of the association between ants and plants taken into account, plants with obligate association
with ants exhibited almost four times higher herbivory compared to plants with facultative associations with ants, but similar
reductions in plant reproduction. The removal of a single ant species increased plant herbivory by almost three times compared
to the removal of several ant species. Altogether, these results suggest that ants do act as plant biotic defenses, but the
effects of their presence are more pronounced in tropical systems, especially in myrmecophytic plants.

Secondary pollen carryover by ants in a natural population of Scleranthus perennis (Caryophyllaceae)
L. Svensson 《Oecologia》1986,70(4):631-632
Summary Secondary pollen carryover is defined as the process whereby a pollinator receives previously deposited pollen grains when visiting a flower and transfers them into a new (secondary) carryover sequence. The secondary pollen carryover in a system of ants, Formica rufibarbis, visiting Scleranthus perennis (Caryophyllaceae) was studied using fluorescent dyes as pollen analogues. The mean secondary carryover was found to be 1.2 flowers compared with 4.5 flowers for the primary carryover. The number of dye grains deposited per flower visited is lower and the frequency of zero deposition is higher in the secondary carryover sequence than in the primary. 相似文献

Some myrmecophilous animals show myrmecomorphy, however, its adaptive significance is still controversial. We investigated a possible benefit of Batesianmimicry between a myrmecophilous staphylinid beetle, Pella comes, and its host ant, Lasius (Dendrolasius) spathepus, by using a common ant predator, the Japanese treefrog, Hyla japonica. In the field, H. japonica were found to feed on numerous ants and other insects, but in laboratory experiments they refused feeding on L. spathepus. L. spathepus was highly repellent to these frogs, while P. comes was potentially palatable. After repeated contacts with L. spathepus which led to its avoidance the treefrogs started to reject P. comes as well . This suggests that myrmecomorphy is beneficial to P. comes, reducing the risk of predation, and that it , may represent a case of Batesian mimicry. may represent a case of Batesian mimicry. This is the first report of Thelohania solenopsae infections in monogyne (single-queen) Solenopsis invicta colonies in the field. In a 0.2-ha plot near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, inter-colony prevalence was 63% infection in June, 1999, when the population was 100% monogyne. In February, 2000, 21% of 33 monogyne and 90% of 10 polygyne colonies were infected. By May, 2001, the polygyne colonies had disappeared and only one of 34 monogyne colonies was infected, the final detection of T. solenopsae in the plot. Colony size did not differ significantly among the four types (monogyne versus polygynexinfected versus uninfected). 相似文献

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) belongs to a neuropeptide family including two precursors (pro-NPFFA and pro-NPFFB) and two receptors (NPFF1 and NPFF2). Very recently, the novel compound RF9 was reported as the truly selective antagonist on NPFF receptors. The present study examined the effects of RF9 on the hypothermia and anti-morphine action induced by NPFF in mice. (1) RF9 injected into the third ventricle was devoid of any residual agonist activity, but it completely antagonized the hypothermic effects of NPFF (30 or 45 nmol) after cerebral administration in mice; (2) RF9 did not alter the tail-flick latency and morphine analgesia in nociceptive test, however, co-administration of RF9 prevented the anti-morphine action of intracerebroventricularly applied NPFF (10 nmol, i.c.v.) in the mouse tail-flick assay. Collectively, our data indicate that RF9, behaving as a truly pure NPFF receptors antagonist, prevents NPFF-induced drops of the body temperature and morphine analgesia in mice. In addition, it further confirms that the hypothermia and anti-morphine action of NPFF are mediated directly by NPFF receptors. 相似文献

Expression of chemosensory proteins in hairs on wings of Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The hairs on the wings of Locusta migratoria were observed and mapped using light microscopy, as well as by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Based on their ultrastructure, we can distinguish four main types of hairs on the wings of adult L. migratoria , viz, short, medium and long hairs, and sensilla chaetica. The long hairs are located only on the ventral surface of the hindwing, whereas the other three types are present both on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of forewing and hindwing in both sexes. Medium hairs and sensilla chaetica are significantly more abundant on the dorsal surface of forewings in both females and males, than on the ventral surface, whereas the opposite was observed for short hairs (P < 0.01). No significant difference between males and females was observed in the density of any type of hairs (P > 0.1). Several dendritic branches, enveloped by a dendrite sheath, are situated in the lymph cavity of sensilla chaetica. Instead, no dendritic structure was observed in the cavity of the other three types of hairs. Immunocytochemical localization of chemosensory proteins (CSPs) was performed on ultrathin sections of hairs on wings. The antiserum against chemosensory proteins from L. migratoria (LmigCSP-II) strongly labelled sensilla chaetica, with gold granules only found in the outer sensillum lymph. In addition, the epidermal cell membrane of the wing was stained by the antiserum against LmigCSP-II. The other three types of hairs were never labelled. The results indicate that the wings might involve in contact chemoreception process. 相似文献

Heterotrimeric G proteins are molecular switches modulated by families of structurally and functionally related regulators. GIV (Gα-interacting vesicle-associated protein) is the first non-receptor guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that activates Gα(i) subunits via a defined, evolutionarily conserved motif. Here we found that Calnuc and NUCB2, two highly homologous calcium-binding proteins, share a common motif with GIV for Gα(i) binding and activation. Bioinformatics searches and structural analysis revealed that Calnuc and NUCB2 possess an evolutionarily conserved motif with sequence and structural similarity to the GEF sequence of GIV. Using in vitro pulldown and competition assays, we demonstrate that this motif binds preferentially to the inactive conformation of Gα(i1) and Gα(i3) over other Gα subunits and, like GIV, docks onto the α3/switch II cleft. Calnuc binding was impaired when Lys-248 in the α3 helix of Gα(i3) was replaced with M, the corresponding residue in Gα(o), which does not bind to Calnuc. Moreover, mutation of hydrophobic residues in the conserved motif predicted to dock on the α3/switch II cleft of Gα(i3) impaired the ability of Calnuc and NUCB2 to bind and activate Gα(i3) in vitro. We also provide evidence that calcium binding to Calnuc and NUCB2 abolishes their interaction with Gα(i3) in vitro and in cells, probably by inducing a conformational change that renders the Gα(i)-binding residues inaccessible. Taken together, our results identify a new type of Gα(i)-regulatory motif named the GBA motif (for Gα-binding and -activating motif), which is conserved across different proteins throughout evolution. These findings provide the structural basis for the properties of Calnuc and NUCB2 binding to Gα subunits and its regulation by calcium ions. 相似文献

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), found both peripherally and centrally, is involved in food ingestion. Although its expression in brain is increased by fasting, it is not known whether it crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Use of the sensitive method of multiple-time regression analysis has shown that almost all of the peptides and polypeptides tested cross the BBB at a rate faster than the vascular marker albumin. With this same method, however, we found that the 19-amino acid 125I-Phe13,Tyr19-MCH did not cross faster than 99mTc-albumin. Several mechanisms were excluded as possible explanations for the slow rate of influx. These included degradation, association with capillary endothelial cells, and transport from brain to blood. When Phe13,Tyr19-MCH was perfused in blood-free buffer, however, it entered the brain significantly faster than albumin. This suggested protein binding as an explanation for the slow rate of influx when the MCH was administered in blood. Protein binding was confirmed by capillary zone electrophoresis, which showed that almost all of the Phe13,Tyr19-MCH added to blood migrated with a large-molecular-weight substance. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-capillary gel electrophoresis of Phe13,Tyr19-MCH in buffer additionally showed that the MCH aggregated as a trimer, a factor not preventing its influx by blood-free perfusion. Thus, the results show that blood-borne Phe13,Tyr19-MCH does not significantly cross the BBB, probably because of its binding to serum proteins. 相似文献

This Letter describes the synthesis and SAR, developed through an iterative analogue library approach, of a mGluR5 allosteric partial antagonist lead based on a 5-(phenylethynyl)pyrimidine scaffold. With slight structural modifications to the distal phenyl ring, analogues demonstrated a range of pharmacological activities from mGluR5 partial antagonism to full antagonism/negative allosteric modulation to positive allosteric modulation. 相似文献

Survival rates of both early and middle instar larvae of the nymphalid butterfly, Sasakia
charonda, were estimated to be lowest on test trees planted in a meadow (site A), intermediate in a small, narrow secondary deciduous
broadleaf forest (small patch, site B) and highest in a large secondary deciduous broadleaf forest (large forest, site C).
The larval mortality rates due to predation by tree-climbing predators from the ground (tree climbing predator) such as ants
and the larvae of carabids were estimated to be greater at sites A and B than those at site C. The number of predatory ants
climbing test trees was significantly greater at sites A and B than at site C, and the ants harvested honeydew from aphids
living on tree leaves at those two sites. Aphid densities were significantly higher on trees at sites A and B than at site
C, and aphid densities and numbers of predatory ants were significantly and positively correlated at sites A and B. In an
experiment controlling aphid density per branch on test trees, the numbers of ants and the mortality rates of S.
charonda larvae were greater on branches with high aphid densities than on those with low aphid densities at both sites A and B. These
results suggest that the aphid density per host tree was higher in the meadow and the small patch than in the large forest;
at both sites these higher aphid densities attracted higher numbers of predatory ants to test trees, and as a result, mortality
rates of S.
charonda larvae were increased. 相似文献

Summary The Southeast Asian antTetraponera sp. nearattenuata F. Smith inhabits internodes of large bamboo species that it shares with symbiotic pseudococcids. It finds access to this nesting habitat via small holes made by wood-boring insects. During heavy rain, runoff water collects in these punctured internodes. TheTetraponera workers remove the water by ingesting it, walking to the entrance hole, and regurgitating it to the outside. In this way, they 1) reduce the danger of colony members drowing, 2) enable their symbionts to feed also on the internode floor, and 3) prevent excessive growth of microbes in the nest. 相似文献

Coconut trees are mostly anemophilous; however, because bees and ants forage on coconut tree inflorescences for floral food, entomophilous pollination can also occur. The aim of this study was to determine the food resource preference of bees and ants while they collect pollen, nectar and, for ants, occasionally prey on coconut tree inflorescences, as well as to evaluate their impact on self-pollination. The number of ant visits to first female and then male flowers is significantly higher than that of bees. For Apis mellifera (L.) and Pseudomyrmex gracilis (Fabricius) 14% of the sequences were favorable to direct self-pollination. The probability of visits for all of the sequences was similar for both bees and ants and there was no difference in resource choice. For these reasons, neither can be considered a more effective pollinator of the coconut tree. 相似文献
