The lack of vertical migration in Daphnia: the effect of homogenously distributed food 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Neither Daphnia hyalina, Daphnia cristata, nor Daphnia cucullata vertically migrated in Lake Mikoajskie and Lake Majcz. We suggest that even under strong fish predation pressure there is no reason to migrate when seston is relatively homogenously distributed throughout the water column. 相似文献

In many species of Daphnia spines, neck teeth, and enlarged or reshaped helmets are well-known as defences against invertebrate predators. Until now, Daphnia hyalina (Leydig, 1860), a common species in many European lakes, has appeared to be an exception to this rule. Here, we provide evidence that the larvae of Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) also can induce morphological changes in D. hyalina. Specimens react morphologically to the presence of larvae in three ways: (a) by changes in the shape of head shield, (b) by the formation of spine(s) on the head, and (c) by the elongation of the tail spine. The frequency and intensity of these morphological changes are correlated positively with midge larvae densities. The most pronounced reactions occurred in young D. hyalina. The predator kairomone also induced changes in Daphnia body size. 相似文献

Summary We present a statistical analysis of a previously published (Yen, 1983) but heretofore unanalyzed data set on the vertical distributions and diel vertical migration (DVM) of adult females of the marine planktonic copepod Euchaeta elongata in Dabob Bay, Washington, USA. Non-ovigerous females were strongly migratory on all four dates sampled, residing between 75–175 m during the day and at shallower depths during the night, commonly entering the upper 50 m of the water column. In contrast, ovigerous females were non-migratory or weakly migratory, largely remaining between 100–175 m both day and night, and entering the upper 50 m of the water column only rarely. Thus non-ovigerous females always migrated much more strongly, as measured by both amplitude of migration and the proportion of animals migrating, than did ovigerous females. These results led us to hypothesize that differential susceptibility to visually orienting predators was the cause of these differences in DVM behavior in female E. elongata, and we subsequently undertook an experimental study of the feeding selectivity of the copepod's natural predator, Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi). Pacific herring exhibited a highly significant preference for ovigerous over nonovigerous adult female E. elongata. The demographic consequences of variable DVM in adult female E. elongata were investigated by way of life table analyses. Results indicated that under conditions of thermal stratification of the water column there is a distinct demographic disadvantage (reduced rate of realized population growth) incurred by non-migratory or weakly migratory ovigerous females due to delayed egg development at cooler subsurface temperatures. We conclude that ovigerous female E. elongata remain at depth both day and night to avoid visually orienting predators, and that such behavior must afford the copepod a demographic advantage of no less than a 26% reduction in adult mortality to offset the demographic cost of delayed egg development. 相似文献

The interaction of Chaoborus size and vertical distribution determines predation effects on Daphnia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Larvae of Chaoborus, the phantom midge, are important pelagic planktivores in many freshwater lakes and ponds. The effect of Chaoborus on its prey depends on its size, especially mouth gape diameter, and vertical migration pattern, which affects predator–prey spatial overlap. These two features vary considerably in different Chaoborus species and instars. In this study, the interacting effects of both Chaoborus size and vertical distribution on population growth of Daphnia pulex was analysed with a field enclosure experiment and a matrix population model. 2. In the field experiment, Daphnia were grown in four replicated treatments that included a control (no Chaoborus) and three combinations of instar III and IV Chaoborus of two species (C. trivittatus and C. americanus). Parameters of the matrix model were based on differences between Chaoborus species and instars in capture and ingestion of Daphnia of differing sizes (prey vulnerability) and in vertical overlap with Daphnia in each treatment (density risk). 3. In comparison with the control, the two treatments containing the smaller, migratory C. americanus showed a significant effect on Daphnia population growth rate, while the treatment containing only the larger, non‐migratory C. trivittatus did not. The model accurately simulated these effects. 4. A Daphnia predation risk model, which uses prey vulnerability and density risk parameters, illustrated the individual and combined effect of the different Chaoborus types on Daphnia. Daphnia have a high prey vulnerability to the large C. trivittatus, but overall predation risk was low because of very little overlap. On the contrary, the smaller C. americanus affects only a small range of Daphnia instars, each with a low vulnerability, yet those instars that were vulnerable had a very high density risk because of an increased overlap. 5. This analysis of Daphnia predation risk parameters with coexisting Chaoborus species strongly supports an integrated approach using both size and vertical distribution to determine the ultimate predation effect on Daphnia. 相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of metabolic activity of the Daphnia community in Lake Bled (Slovenia) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Seasonal changes of the community composition, oxygen consumption (R) and respiratory electron transport system (ETS)-activity of the Daphnia community living in Lake Bled (Slovenia) were studied between January and December 1998. The ETS activity of ovigerous Daphnia females at in situ temperature ranged from 3.27 l O2 mg dw–1 h–1 in February to 20.91 l O2 mg dw–1 h–1 in July. Respiration rates at in situ temperature varied from 4.04 l O2 mg dw–1h–1 in December to 18.68 l O2 mg dw–1 h–1in July. The influence of four factors (temperature, body size, fecundity, genetic differences) on the metabolism were investigated. Both ETS activity and respiration rate significantly correlated with temperature. The proportion of hybrid D. cucullata× galeata in Daphnia community correlated significantly with respiration rate at in situtemperature and ETS activity at standard temperature also. ETS activity and respiration rate showed no significant correlation with body size and the fecundity of Daphnia, whereas ETS activity in D. hyalina × galeata and D. cucullata× galeataseparately correlated with body size. ETS activity of D. hyalina × galeata also was correlated with fecundity. Hybrid D. hyalina× galeata had up to one third lower ETS activity than D. cucullata× galeata. The mean ETS/R ratio in the Daphnia community was 1.16±0.28 (N= 12). The ETS/R ratio did not correlate significantly with temperature, body size, fecundity or the proportion of D. cucullata× galeatain the Daphnia community. Laboratory experiments showed that both hybrids had similar ETS/R ratios. 相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) and diel feeding rhythm of two cladocerans, Daphnia longispina and Bosmina coregoni were investigated at the pelagic area of Lake Toya (Hokkaido, Japan) in May, August and October 1992. Both species performed nocturnal DVM. The amplitude of DVM, however, became smaller from May to October. Such seasonal variations in DVM could not be explained by light penetration and/or water temperature. The two species had a clear feeding rhythm; they fed at night in May and October but also after sunrise in August. These feeding rhythms appeared to be related to the light-dark cycle, but were not necessarily associated with their DVM. We suggest that the diel feeding rhythm and DVM are regulated independently by light cues. 相似文献

The population dynamics of Daphnia hyalina Leydig in a productive lake, Esthwaite Water, and an unproductive lake, Buttermere, in the English Lake District have been compared. The winter is passed as resting eggs in the bottom sediments in Buttermere and as free-swimming individuals in the planktonic zone in Esthwaite Water. In Esthwaite Water seasonal periodicity was characterised by maxima in spring and autumn and a minimum in summer; in Buttermere, there was no spring maximum and the first increase in population density was in summer. Population densities were higher and adult females were larger and laid more eggs per clutch in Esthwaite Water than in Buttermere. In each lake males became numerous in autumn. Observed rates of population increase, r and calculated birth rates, b and death rates d were nearly always higher in Esthwaite Water than in Buttermere. 相似文献

Using a cloning technique, we revealed the existence of three phototactically distinct types in Daphnia magna, viz. negatives, positives, and gipsies. The latter migrate continuously between a low and a high light intensity. The expression of this behaviour is genetically determined, although positives and negatives can reversibly switch into gipsies. It is proposed that two opposite genotypes exist, with the gipsy behaviour epigenetically induced. All juveniles behave more or less uniformly, irrespective of their origin. The phototactic responses develop rather late during ontogenesis. 相似文献

D. longispina of the meromictic lake El Tobar is a round-headed form. It never has a helmet, but in summer a small proportion of immature individuals (0.9–1.2 mm females and males) have one or two neck teeth. The size structure of this Daphnia population, as well as the vertical distribution and migration of different size-classes, were studied in September and November of 1991 and April of 1992. The large variation in mean size and size at first reproduction, as well as the occurrence of different patterns of vertical migration are interpreted as responses to different predator situations. At the end of April, when Daphnia mortality by visually hunting predators is dominating, a typical nocturnal migration is adopted and size distribution is biased to smaller size classes. In November, when mortality is mainly attributed to the nocturnally migrating Chaoborus, Daphnia shows a reversed migration pattern. In September, when the population of Daphnia is responding to both visual (fish) and non-visual predators (Chaoborus), it adopts a pattern of twilight migration. The presence of neck teeth in vulnerable size classes in September might be an additional adaptative response to Chaoborus predation. In September, the size structure of the Daphnia population is shifted to larger classes and the vertical distribution of size classes shows a pronounced segregation between juveniles and adults. Juveniles are found closer to the surface, while adults dwell predominantly in the rich, deep waters near the oxicline. This suggests that an additional advantage of the ascent of the adult Daphnia exploiting those deep resources is the release of young in more oxygenated and warmer waters. The Daphnia population of lake El Tobar is known to be clonally diverse, and the changing frequency of genotypes could play an important part in the observed seasonal differences in behaviour and size. 相似文献

In an 18-month electrophoretic study, a Daphnia obtusa population that recently colonized Lake Orta (a large, severely polluted lake in Northern Italy) showed no genetic variation.Populations from other localities were sampled. From clones established by single females, genotype differences were determined by two life table experiments (using Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore water as a culture medium). As expected, in the Lake Orta water the colonizing clone (LO) had longer survival, produced more newborns and had a larger rate of increase than the other clones. In the Lake Maggiore water the LO clone still fared better than the other clones. 相似文献

In spring and early summer, a small population of the large-bodied Daphnia pulicaria coexists with a much larger population of the medium-sized hybrid Daphnia galeata × hyalina in the epilimnion of Lake Maarsseveen (The Netherlands). When large shoals of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis) appear in the open water, both species start to migrate vertically. Since D. pulicaria has a larger body-size than D. galeata × hyalina, and is therefore competitive dominant over the hybrid, it is unlikely that both species interact via their common food resource, but they react both to fish predation. However, since they differ in size, and therefore in vulnerability for fish predation, both species adopt different strategies. The smaller bodied, and less vulnerable D. galeata × hyalina exhibits diel vertical migration ascending to the surface at dusk, and staying there during the night. In this way, benefiting from the higher temperatures of the surface layers. In contrast, the large-bodied, and more vulnerable D. pulicaria selects the deep cold hypolimnion water layers as refuge against fish predation. In this way it benefits from a safe habitat, free from fish predators, but on the other hand suffers from low water temperatures, which decrease its fitness. It is likely that the relatively higher temperature in the upper water layers serves as a proximate factor for the downward migration of D. pulicaria. 相似文献

The day-time vertical distribution of different size classes ofLeptodora kindtii in Tjeukemeer was studied during two contrasting years: 1978 and 1979. During the first year (1978) the predation pressure exerted by the planktivorous fish was rather high, whilst this was ca. 15 times lower during 1979. The diel vertical migration of different size classes ofLeptodora, was studied twice during 1979. Both studies support the predator avoidance hypothesis and also emphasize the idea that diel vertical migration is a dynamic rather than a fixed behaviour trait within a population. 相似文献

Six genera of Clad ocera (Diaphanosoma, Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Moina, Bosmina, Bosminopsis), each of them usually with only one species were found in Lake D. Helvecio, a natural valley lake located in the eastern part of Brazil. Diurnal migratory movements of the organisms observed in this lake showed a different pattern in different species. Closely related species, which explore the same food source, live in different layers, thus avoiding interspecific competition. The migratory behaviour of the species was studied mainly in relation to temperature and oxygen distribution in the lake. Thus, analyses were made in the summer (January, 1978) when a strong stratification occurs with the establishment of a thermocline and an oxycline. Comparisons were made also with the data obtained in winter (July, 1978), when a complete mixing of water occurs. 相似文献

During the summer months of 1974–1985 chlorophyll-a and total P concentration, biomass of Daphnia hyalina, smelt Osmerus eperlanus, bream Abramis brema and pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca, water temperature and water intake from lake IJsselmeer were monitored in Tjeukemeer. During this period there were manipulations with the bream and pikeperch stocks as a consequence of the termination of a gill-net fishery in 1977, and larval smelt immigrated each year from the large lake IJsselmeer and contributed largely to the yearly smelt recruitment. The correlation matrix of the nine variables mentioned above showed a positive correlation between bream and chlorophyll-a, but surprisingly a negative one between smelt and chlorophyll-a. The latter can only be explained when smelt is the dependent variable. In a multi-linear regression there was a negative effect of temperature, chlorophyll a and pikeperch on smelt and a positive effect of water intake. Daphnia hyalina was negatively influenced by the biomass of smelt and the water intake of lake IJsselmeer. The positive relation of Daphnia hyalina and chlorophyll-a was probably related to better survival chances of D. hyalina in an Oscillatoria-rich environment when smelt is the most important predator. An increasing biomass of bream coincided with higher total-P levels and probably contributed to higher chlorophyll-a levels. 相似文献

The distribution and variation of Daphnia lumholtzi (Crustacea: Cladocera) in relation to fish predation in Lake Albert, East Africa 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

In Lake Albert Daphnia lumholtzi is found in two forms. One has a pointed anterior prolongation, or helmet, on the head. The other has a shorter rounded head, and was originally described as a separate species, D. monacha . The latter form dominates the zooplankton in the middle of the lake where planktivorous fish are rare or absent. The helmeted form becomes commoner near the margins of the lake and reaches its greatest abundance in Ndaiga Lagoon, where planktivorousfish are common. The possession of a helmet is associated with a reduction in the size of the carapace compared to the round headed form. The carapace with its contained eggs is the most conspicuous part of a cladoceran, so that the helmeted forms are at an advantage in the presence of planktivorous fish which locate their prey by sight. The mid-lake monacha forms are larger than specimens of the same form in Ndaiga Lagoon, where it is shown that Alestes baremose feeds selectively on the larger specimens of the monacha form.
The helmeted form produces more, but smaller eggs than the monacha form. The total brood volume (= mean egg volume x mean number eggs per female) is greatest in the midlake monacha forms. The selective advantages of variations in egg size and the possession of a helmet are discussed. It is concluded that the data from Lake Albert support the hypothesis of Brooks (1965) concerning the adaptive significance of helmet development in Daphnia . 相似文献

Caridina nilotica (Decapoda: Atyidae) in offshore waters of Lake Victoria were investigated with both day and night sampling over a period of two years. Offshore populations are mainly planktonic rather than benthic, and the animals exhibit diel vertical migrations into near-surface waters at night. These changes in diel abundance as well as the size-frequency distribution of the migrating shrimp suggest that the migratory behavior is in response to visual planktivory, because only the very smallest individuals (2–4 mm) remain in surface waters during the day. During October 1992, abundances were estimated both by vertical net sampling and by underwater video transect methods. Concordance was established between abundances estimated by the two methods. Only about 9% (night) to 14% (day) of the Caridina population appeared to be epibenthic. We suggest that the behavior of the animal is consistent with the hypothesis that it is not a strict detritivore as previously reported; rather it may engage in facultative planktivory, especially at night. 相似文献

Survival of natural Daphnia populations without previous acclimatization in filtered water under laboratory conditions (starvation) was used as a parameter describing the actual competitive ability of populations in periods of food limitation. Two populations (1 and 2) of Daphnia pulicaria Forbes coming from two enclosures with a low (< 1 mgC l–1) and a high (about 3 mgC l–1) seston level were examined in their resistance to starvation. Juveniles of both populations survived better than adult females in the conditions without seston as well as in the control experiment, despite their much lower biomass. Animals from population 1 had lower mortality than those from population 2 in all variants of the experiment. The results confirm the hypothesis that the ability of daphnids to starve depends also on adaptation to previous feeding conditions. 相似文献

A species of Daphnia, Daphnia curvirostris Eylmann, found in high mountain lakes and ponds in central Japan is described. Although there were some differences in the shape of the male rostrum and the chromosome number between European populations as described by Johnson (1952) and Trentini (1980), and Japanese ones collected from high mountain waters, Japanese specimens had many characteristics similar to the taxon D. curvirostris of Europe. 相似文献
