We investigated whether groundwater abstraction for urban water supply diminishes the storage of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and organic matter in the soil of rural wetlands. Wetland soil organic matter (SOM) benefits air and water quality by sequestering large masses of C and N. Yet, the accumulation of wetland SOM depends on soil inundation, so we hypothesized that groundwater abstraction would diminish stocks of SOM, C, and N in wetland soils. Predictions of this hypothesis were tested in two types of subtropical, depressional‐basin wetland: forested swamps and herbaceous‐vegetation marshes. In west‐central Florida, >650 ML groundwater day?1 are abstracted for use primarily in the Tampa Bay metropolis. At higher abstraction volumes, water tables were lower and wetlands had shorter hydroperiods (less time inundated). In turn, wetlands with shorter hydroperiods had 50–60% less SOM, C, and N per kg soil. In swamps, SOM loss caused soil bulk density to double, so areal soil C and N storage per m2 through 30.5 cm depth was diminished by 25–30% in short‐hydroperiod swamps. In herbaceous‐vegetation marshes, short hydroperiods caused a sharper decline in N than in C. Soil organic matter, C, and N pools were not correlated with soil texture or with wetland draining‐reflooding frequency. Many years of shortened hydroperiod were probably required to diminish soil organic matter, C, and N pools by the magnitudes we observed. This diminution might have occurred decades ago, but could be maintained contemporarily by the failure each year of chronically drained soils to retain new organic matter inputs. In sum, our study attributes the contraction of hydroperiod and loss of soil organic matter, C, and N from rural wetlands to groundwater abstraction performed largely for urban water supply, revealing teleconnections between rural ecosystem change and urban resource demand.  相似文献

Wetlands are large carbon pools and play important roles in global carbon cycles as natural carbon sinks. This study analyzes the variation of total soil carbon with depth in two temperate (Ohio) and three tropical (humid and dry) wetlands in Costa Rica and compares their total soil C pool to determine C accumulation in wetland soils. The temperate wetlands had significantly greater (P < 0.01) C pools (17.6 kg C m−2) than did the wetlands located in tropical climates (9.7 kg C m−2) in the top 24 cm of soil. Carbon profiles showed a rapid decrease of concentrations with soil depth in the tropical sites, whereas in the temperate wetlands they tended to increase with depth, up to a maximum at 18–24 cm, after which they started decreasing. The two wetlands in Ohio had about ten times the mean total C concentration of adjacent upland soils (e.g., 161 g C kg−1 were measured in a central Ohio isolated forested wetland, and 17 g C kg−1 in an adjacent upland site), and their soil C pools were significantly higher (P < 0.01). Among the five wetland study sites, three main wetland types were identified – isolated forested, riverine flow-through, and slow-flow slough. In the top 24 cm of soil, isolated forested wetlands had the greatest pool (10.8 kg C m−2), significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the other two types (7.9 kg C m−2 in the riverine flow-though wetlands and 8.0 kg C m−2 in a slowly flowing slough), indicating that the type of organic matter entering into the system and the type of wetland may be key factors in defining its soil C pool. A riverine flow-through wetland in Ohio showed a significantly higher C pool (P < 0.05) in the permanently flooded location (18.5 kg C m−2) than in the edge location with fluctuating hydrology, where the soil is intermittently flooded (14.6 kg C m−2).  相似文献

Livestock significantly affect wetland soils and vegetation but their impacts on wetland nutrient dynamics are poorly understood. We set up a full factorial laboratory experiment to assess the effects of Juncus effusus, grazing exclusion, and flooding on P flux from intact cores collected from seasonal wetlands in cattle pastures in south Florida. We collected intact cores from Juncus tussocks and plant interspaces inside and outside 4-year grazing exclosures in five replicate wetlands. We incubated the cores for 50 days under continuous flooding or weekly 1-day flooding cycles and measured P concentrations in surface and pore water. Grazing exclosures had less Juncus (17%) and bare ground (2%) than adjacent grazed areas (Juncus, 48%; bare ground, 12%), but did not affect P fluxes. Initial fluxes of soluble reactive P (SRP) were much higher in cores with Juncus (242 ± 153 mg P m−2 day−1) than without Juncus (14 ± 20 mg P m−2 day−1). In weekly flooded cores P fluxes fell to 19.7 ± 13.4 mg P m−2 day−1 in cores with and 2.7 ± 2.6 in cores without Juncus. The strong effect of Juncus on P flux was an indirect effect of cattle grazing, but 4 years of grazing exclusion did not have a significant effect on P fluxes.  相似文献

Topsoil organic carbon storage of China and its loss by cultivation   总被引:40,自引:0,他引:40
Topsoil is very sensitive to human disturbance under the changing climate. Estimates of topsoil soil organic carbon (SOC) pool may be crucial for understanding soil C dynamics under human land uses and soil potential of mitigating the increasing atmospheric CO2 by soil C sequestration. China is a country with long history of cultivation. In this paper, we present an estimate of topsoil SOC pool and cultivation-induced pool reduction of China soils based upon the data of all the soil types identified in the 2nd national soil survey conducted during 1979–1982. The area of cultivated soils of China amounted to 138 × 106 ha while the uncultivated soils occupied 740 × 106 ha in 1980. Topsoil SOC density ranged from 0.77 to 1489 t Cha−1 in uncultivated soils and 3.52 to 591 t Cha−1 in cultivated soils with the average being 50 ± 47 t Cha−1 and 35 ± 32 t Cha−1, respectively. Geographically, the maximum mean topsoil SOC density was found in northeastern China, being of 70 ± 104 t Cha−1 for uncultivated soils and of 57 ± 54 t Cha−1 for cultivated soils, respectively. The lowest topsoil SOC density for uncultivated soils was found in East China, being of 38 ± 33 t Cha−1 and that for cultivated soils in North China, being of 30 ± 30 t Cha−1. There is still uncertainty in estimating the total topsoil SOC of uncultivated soils because a large portion of them was not surveyed during the 2nd Soil Survey. However, an estimate of total SOC for cultivated soils amounted to 5.1 Pg. On average, cultivation of China’s soils had induced a decrease of SOC density of 15 t Cha−1 giving rise to an overall pool reduction at 2 Pg. This is significantly smaller than the total SOC pool decline of 7 Pg due to cultivation of natural soils in China reported by Wu et al. (Glob. Change Biol. 2003, 9: 305–315), who made a pool estimation of whole soil profile assuming 1 m depth for all soils. As the mean topsoil SOC density of China was lower than the world average value given by Batjes (J. Soil Sci. 1996, 47: 151–163), China may be considered as a country with low SOC density and may have great potential for C sequestration under well defined management. However, the dynamics of topsoil C storage in China agricultural soils since 1980’s and the effects of modern agricultural developments on C dynamics need further study for elucidating the role of China agriculture in global climatic change.  相似文献

Impact of drying and re-wetting on N,P and K dynamics in a wetland soil   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11

As increased nutrient availability due to drainage is considered a major cause of eutrophication in wetlands rewetting of drained wetlands is recommended as a restoration measure. The effect of soil drying and rewetting on the contribution of various nutrient release or transformation processes to changed nutrient availability for plants is however weakly understood. We measured effects of soil drying and re-wetting on N mineralization, and denitrification, as well as on release of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), phosphorus, and potassium in incubated soil cores from a wet meadow in southern Sweden. Additionally, the impact of re-wetting with sulphate-enriched water was studied. Soil drying stimulated N mineralization (3 times higher) and reduced denitrification (5 times lower) compared to continuously wet soil. In the wet cores, denitrification increased to 20 mg N m–2 d–1, which was much higher than denitrification measured in the field. In the field, increased inorganic-N availability for plants due to drainage seemed primarily to be caused by increased N mineralization, and less by decreased denitrification. Soil drying also stimulated the release of DON and K, but P release was not affected. Re-wetting of dried soil cores strongly stimulated denitrification (up to 160 mg N m–2 d–1), but N mineralization was not significantly decreased, neither were DON or K release. In contrast, the extractable P pool increased upon soil wetting. Re-wetting with sulphate-enriched water had no effect on any of the nutrient release or transformation rates. We conclude that caution is required in re-wetting of drained wetlands, because it may unintendently cause internal eutrophication through an increased P availability for plants.  相似文献

Many wetland restoration projects occur on former agricultural soils that have a history of disturbance and fertilization, making them prone to phosphorus (P) release upon flooding. To study the relationship between P release and hydrologic regime, we collected soil cores from three restoration wetlands and three undisturbed wetlands around Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon, U.S.A. Soil cores were subjected to one of three hydrologic regimes—flooded, moist, and dry—for 7.5 weeks, and P fluxes were measured upon reflooding. Soils from restoration wetlands released P upon reflooding regardless of the hydrologic regime, with the greatest releases coming from soils that had been flooded or dried. Undisturbed wetland soils released P only after drying. Patterns in P release can be explained by a combination of physical and biological processes, including the release of iron‐bound P due to anoxia in the flooded treatment and the mineralization of organic P under aerobic conditions in the dry treatment. Higher rates of soil P release from restoration wetland soils, particularly under flooded conditions, were associated with higher total P concentrations compared with undisturbed wetland soils. We conclude that maintaining moist soil is the means to minimize P release from recently flooded wetland soils. Alternatively, prolonged flooding provides a means of liberating excess labile P from former agricultural soils while minimizing continued organic P mineralization and soil subsidence.  相似文献

The FLooded Upland Dynamics Experiment (FLUDEX) at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in northwest Ontario was designed to test the hypothesis that methylmercury (MeHg) production in reservoirs is related to the amount, and subsequent decomposition, of flooded organic matter. Three upland forest sites that varied in the amounts of organic carbon stored in vegetation and soils (Low C, 30,870 kg C ha−1; Medium C, 34,930 kg C ha−1; and High C, 45,860 kg C ha−1) were flooded annually from May to September with low-organic carbon, low-MeHg water pumped from a nearby lake. Within five weeks of flooding, MeHg concentrations in the reservoir outflows exceeded those in reservoir inflows and remained elevated for the duration of the experiment, peaking at 1.60 ng L−1 in the Medium C reservoir. We estimated the net production of MeHg in each reservoir by calculating annual changes in pools of MeHg stored in flooded soils, periphyton, zooplankton, and fish. Overall, there was an initial pulse of MeHg production (range = 120–1590 ng m−2 day−1) in all FLUDEX reservoirs that lasted for 2 years, after which time net demethylation (range = 360–1230 ng MeHg degraded m−2 day−1) began to reduce the pools of MeHg in the reservoirs, but not back to levels found prior to flooding. Rates of MeHg production were generally related to the total amount of organic carbon flooded to create the reservoirs. Large increases in MeHg stores in soils compared to those in water and biota indicate that flooded soils were the main sites of MeHg production. This study should assist hydroelectric utilities and government agencies in making informed decisions about selecting sites for future reservoir development to reduce MeHg contamination of the reservoir fisheries.  相似文献

Laboratory scale tests on phytodepuration of raw and pre-treated leachate from municipal sanitary waste were carried out with four vegetable aquatic and terrestrial species at different organic loads. We used the terrestrial species Stenotaphrum secundatum and the free-floating aquatic species Lemna minor, Eichhornia crassipes and Myriophyllum verticellatum to purify leachate from municipal solid waste. The organic load characterized by COD varied from 2–30 g m−2 day−1. Blanks using tap water served as controls. Duration of the experiments varied from 9–90 days. Maximum concentrations in the experiments were 1600 mg l−1 COD and 300 mg l−1 NH4–N for S. secundatum. Best results in terms of COD, BOD, and ammonia removal were obtained for raw leachate with COD=2 g m−2 day−1 in free water surface (FWS) wetlands, and with 2 and 5 g m−2 day−1 in subsurface flow (SSF) wetlands. Results show that for pretreated leachate (labeled c) low in BOD and NH4–N, the aquatic species showed low removal and stress even at the lowest load of COD=2 g m−2 day−1. We cannot say if this is due to the pretreatment itself or the chemical or microbial composition of this leachate. The Stenotaphrum system operated well with this load of leachate c. For untreated leachate (type a and b) the removal and plant growing conditions seemed good at COD=2 g m−2 day−1. For S. secundatum a load of COD=5 g m−2 day−1 operated well. All loads above COD=5 g m−2 day−1 caused low removal and stress, and the green parts of the plants disappeared. Oxygen was, however, consumed throughout the experimental period. For pretreated leachate (type c), the removal of COD were low (−24 to 17%) but good for NH4–N (52–91%). This leachate also experienced high ammonia removal from the beginning of the experiments, probably due to existing consortia of nitrifying bacteria in it. Statistical analysis shows that the S. secundatum and L. minor systems maintained higher oxygen levels than the M. verticellatum and E. crassipes systems, when operated with tap water. For Lemna minor, this may be due to a better capacity for transporting oxygen into the water. With leachate all S. secundatum systems have higher oxygen levels than the aquatic systems, basically because the water content of the soil has been kept well below saturation. S. secundatum shows a significantly lower removal of COD than did the aquatic systems at a loading of COD=2 g m−2 day−1 of raw leachate. There is no significant difference between the systems in the removal of NH4–N at a loading of COD=2 g m−2 day−1 of both types of leachate. E. crassipes has a lower removal of NH4–N than M. verticellatum and S. secundatum at a loading of 5 g m−2 day−1 of COD of both types of leachate. In our experiments, it appears that the amount of free ammonia explains the toxicity of the leachate to the plants. This, however, does not exclude other possible toxic factors.  相似文献

Summary The effects of water regime on the performance of rice were investigated in a greenhouse experiment and two field experiments. The greenhouse experiment involved four water regimes (continuous flooding, and soil drying for 16 days — begun 2, 5, and 8 weeks after transplanting — followed by reflooding), four soils, and 0 and 100 mg N/kg. Soil drying raised the redox potentials of all soils beyond the aerobic threshold. Averaged for soils and N levels, yields from treatments in which soil drying was begun at 2 and 5 weeks after transplanting were lower than that from the continuously flooded treatment, but the simple effects of soil drying on yield and N uptake depended on the soil and the growth stage of the plant. None of the soil-drying treatments had adverse effects in the soil high in N but soil drying at 2 and 5 weeks after transplanting had adverse effects in the soil low in N. The field experiments tested the effects of three water regimes (continuous flooding, alternate drying and flooding every 2 weeks, and soil drying for 2 weeks at 6 weeks after transplanting following by reflooding), and 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg N/ha on a nearly neutral clay soil, during two seasons. None of the soil-drying treatments depressed growth, yield, or N uptake by rice at any level of N in either season. Nitrate was absent after drying, so denitrification was not possible on subsequent flooding. The adverse effects on yield of alternate flooding and drying, attributed to nitrification-denitrification, may be insignificant in wetland fields carrying an actively growing rice crop.  相似文献

The effect of hydroperiod on nutrient removal efficiency from simulated wastewater was investigated in replicate wetland mesocosms (area, 2 m2, planted with Scirpus californicus). Alternate draining and flooding of sediments (pulsed discharge) increased nutrient removal efficiency compared to the continuous-flow “control”. Average PO43− removal efficiency was 20–30% higher in wetland mesocosms that drained twice daily compared to the control. Inorganic N removal efficiency was less affected than phosphate removal by hydroperiod variation. At the higher NH4+ loading rate (1.83 g N m−2 day−1), inorganic N removal efficiency was consistently 5–20% higher in pulsed-discharge wetland mesocosms than in the control. At the lower NH4+ loading rate (0.9 g N m −2 day −1), pulsed-discharge hydrology had no effect on inorganic N removal efficiency. Twice-daily drainage exhibited average inorganic N removal efficiencies of 96% (lower N loading rate) and 87% (higher N loading) and average phosphate removal efficiencies of 81% (lower P loading) and 90% (higher P loading). Mass balance data from the continuous-flow treatment revealed that the aquatic macrophyte Scirpus californicus was the most important nutrient sink, assimilating 50% of the NH4+ and PO43− supply. The high plant productivity in the mesocosms (15.6 kg m−2 year−1) occurred under conditions of high light (high edge per mesocosm area) and high root contact with nutrient-rich influent (shallow, sandy substrate) and may overestimate plant uptake in larger wetlands. The addition of a nitrification-inhibitor (N-Serve) indicated that 34% of the NH4+ supply was transformed to NO3 by nitrifying bacteria.  相似文献

Phosphorus uptake and release by periphyton mats were quantified in the Everglades Nutrient Removal Project (ENRP) to evaluate the potential for periphyton P removal. Short-term P uptake rates were determined by incubating cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria princeps and Shizothrix calcicola) and Chlorophycean (primarily Rhizoclonium spp.) algal mat samples for 0.5–2 h under ambient conditions in BOD bottles spiked with soluble reactive P (SRP). Cyanobacterial mats removed P more than twice as fast (80–164 μg P h−1 g−1 AFDM) as Chlorophycean mats (33–61 μg P h−1 g−1 AFDM) during these incubations. In a longer term study, fiberglass cylinders were used to enclose 1.8 m2 plots within the wetland and were dosed weekly for 7 weeks with: (1) no nutrients; (2) SRP (0.25 g P m−2 week−1); or (3) SRP plus nitrate (0.42 g N m−2 week−1) and ammonium (0.83 g N m−2 week−1). Phosphorus uptake rates by this periphyton assemblage, which was dominated by the chlorophytes Stigeoclonium spp. and Oedogonium spp., were measured weekly and were similar among nutrient treatments on most dates, indicating that the algal storage compartment for P was not saturated despite repeated P additions. Decomposition rates and P loss by cyanobacteria and Chlorophycean mats were determined by measuring biomass loss and SRP release in darkened BOD bottles over 28–42 day periods under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. First-order aerobic and anaerobic decomposition rates for cyanobacterial mats (k = 0.1095 and 0.1408 day−1, respectively) were 4–20-fold higher than rates for Chlorophycean mats (k = 0.0066 and 0.0250 day−1, respectively) and cyanobacteria released considerably more P back to the water column. Our findings suggest that periphyton can be an important short-term sink for P in treatment wetlands and that retention is strongly affected by the taxonomic composition of the periphyton assemblage.  相似文献

Vegetation and water velocity effects on patterns of sediment deposition were tested by monitoring sedimentation rates in dense cattail, open water, and transitional vegetation zones at distances of 5, 10, and 20 m from the inflows of two experimental wetland basins at the Des Plaines River Wetlands Demonstration Project, northeastern Illinois, USA. One basin received a high hydrologic load (up to 50 cm/wk) and one basin received a low load (up to 6 cm/wk). Sediment deposition rates within 20 m of the inflows reached 3300 g dry wt m−2 day−1 in the high-load basin and 700 g dry wt m−2 day−1 in the low-load basin. Vegetation patterns did not have a significant effect (P > 0.05) on sediment deposition rates in the high-load basin, whereas water velocity effects on rates of sedimentation were significant (P < 0.01) in three of four periods of monitoring. In the low-load basin, vegetation effects were significant (P < 0.01) during the entire period of investigation. Experimental research at this scale aids in the assessment of design criteria for constructed wetlands.  相似文献

Water column metabolism is a major component in the functioning of wetland ecosystems and can be used as an indicator of ecosystem health. The effect of hydrologic pulsing on water column metabolism was studied with 2 year's field data and a validated model for two 1-ha created riparian wetlands in Columbus, OH, USA. Aquatic gross primary productivity (GPP) was measured during hydrologic pulses the first week of April, May and June of 2004 and compared to GPP during steady flow-conditions in April, May and June 2005. Pulses reduced diurnal variation of water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen, and negatively affected GPP rates. Mean GPP measured during hydrologic flood pulses was 5.4 ± 2.6 kcal m−2 day−1, significantly lower than that measured for comparable months with steady-flow hydrology (10.8 ± 3.3 kcal m−2 day−1). Solar-normalized productivity values of 0.08 ± 0.01% of solar energy during pulses and 0.2 ± 0.02% for steady-flow conditions were also significantly different. Different hyperbolic curves of optimum productivity with water temperature were seen for pulsing and steady-flow conditions. A simulation model with hydrology, metabolism, and dissolved oxygen sub models was calibrated with 2005 steady-flow year data and validated with 2004 pulse year data. Results from both the field study and model simulations suggest that there was a threshold hydraulic inflow rate between 30 and 50 cm day−1 where aquatic metabolism became negatively affected by flow.  相似文献

This study examines the effectiveness of a 1.2-ha created/restored emergent marsh at reducing nutrients from a 17.0 ha agricultural and forested watershed in the Ohio River Basin in west central Ohio, USA, during base flow and storm flow conditions. The primary source of water to the wetland was surface inflow, estimated in water year 2000 (October 1999–September 2000) to be 646 cm/year. The wetland also received a significant amount of groundwater discharge at multiple locations within the site that was almost the same in quantity as the surface flow. The surface inflow had 2-year averages concentrations of 0.79, 0.033, and 0.16 mg L−1 for nitrate + nitrite (as N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. Concentrations of nitrate–nitrite, SRP, and TP were 40, 56, and 59% lower, respectively, at the outflow than at the inflow to the wetland over the 2 years of the study. Concentrations of SRP and TP exported from the wetland increased significantly (α = 0.05) during precipitation events in 2000 compared to dry weather flows, but concentrations of nitrate–nitrite did not increase significantly. During these precipitation events the wetland retained 41% of the nitrate–nitrite, 74% of the SRP, and 28% of the TP (by mass). The wetland received an average of 50 g N m−2 per year of nitrate–nitrite and 7.1 g m−2 per year of TP in 2000. Retention rates for the wetland were 39 g N m−2 per year of nitrates and 6.2 g P m−2 per year. These are close to rates suggested in the literature for sustainable non-point source retention by wetlands. The design of this wetland appears to be suitable as it retained a significant portion of the influent nutrient load and did not lose much of its retention capacity during heavy precipitation events. Some suggestions are given for further design improvements.  相似文献

Hydrological restoration of the Southern Everglades will result in increased freshwater flow to the freshwater and estuarine wetlands bordering Florida Bay. We evaluated the contribution of surface freshwater runoff versus atmospheric deposition and ground water on the water and nutrient budgets of these wetlands. These estimates were used to assess the importance of hydrologic inputs and losses relative to sediment burial, denitrification, and nitrogen fixation. We calculated seasonal inputs and outputs of water, total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) from surface water, precipitation, and evapotranspiration in the Taylor Slough/C-111 basin wetlands for 1.5 years. Atmospheric deposition was the dominant source of water and TP for these oligotrophic, phosphorus-limited wetlands. Surface water was the major TN source of during the wet season, but on an annual basis was equal to the atmospheric TN deposition. We calculated a net annual import of 31.4 mg m–2 yr–1 P and 694 mg m–2 yr–1N into the wetland from hydrologic sources. Hydrologic import of P was within range of estimates of sediment P burial (33–70 mg m–2 yr–1 P), while sediment burial of N (1890–4027 mg m–2 yr–1 N) greatly exceeded estimated hydrologic N import. High nitrogen fixation rates or an underestimation of groundwater N flux may explain the discrepancy between estimates of hydrologic N import and sediment N burial rates.  相似文献

Agricultural land use changes differentially affect soil fertility and crop production potential of wetlands. We studied East African wetlands with contrasting hydro-geological characteristics (high- and lowland floodplains and valley swamps). Land uses ranged from no use and grazing over crop production in flooded and drained fields to abandonment. We classified the dynamics of wetlands’ conversion into agricultural sites and assessed selected soil fertility attributes associated with land use changes, and their effect on the crop production potential in aerobic and anaerobic soils. A conversion of pristine wetlands, differing in soil physical and chemical attributes, into sites of production tended to negatively affect soil total C and N. Effects were stronger with soil drainage and in the coarse-textured soils of the lowland floodplain and the mid-hill valleys. Mineral P application in drained valleys significantly increased available soil P. Crop response followed these patterns with usually higher biomass accumulation and nutrient uptake in flooded than aerobic soils. Wetlands of fine soil texture in the highlands appeared more resilient than coarse-textured soils, particularly when drained. Enhanced crop performance in flooded soils indicates the possibility for partial recovery of the production potential and the rehabilitation of some wetlands.  相似文献

Forest had varying effects on stream nutrients in two coastal plain basins of the Delmarva Peninsula, USA. In the Choptank basin, forest was strongly associated with low stream total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate (NO3) concentrations (r20.70), and forest placement along first order streams was important in maintaining low stream nitrogen (N) concentrations (r20.35). In addition, a multiple regression model explained 40% of the stream total phosphorus (TP) variance and indicated that forest directly adjacent to streams (0–100 m) acted as a TP source and forest further away (100–300 m) from streams acted as a TP sink. In contrast, stream nutrients in the nearby Chester basin demonstrated a strong relationship with soil hydrologic properties. Forest had no significant effect on stream N and P because the finer-textured soils, higher stream slopes, and higher runoff potential of the Chester basin appeared to result in less baseflow compared to that in the Choptank basin. This reduced the opportunity for forest to intercept N via plant uptake and denitrification in the high runoff potential soils of the Chester basin. The high percentage of stormflow (40%) coupled with high stream slopes resulted in high soil erosion potential, which may explain the higher TP stream concentrations measured in the Chester compared to that in the Choptank. Differences in the hydrologic pathway appear to explain the different effects of forest on water quality in these two basins.  相似文献

Wetlands provide a large pool of organic matter and nutrients, and are important for maintaining material cycle balances in terrestrial ecosystems, and also help retard climate change. Land use changes in wetlands have greatly disturbed the natural evolution of wetland ecosystems. Wetland drainage and reclamation alters the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the wetland, thus significantly disturbing the material cycles, leading to significant changes in the biogeochemical processes of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the wetland. The wetlands in the Sanjiang Plain are the largest area of fresh wetlands in China. However, the area has experienced major land uses changes since the 1950s; areas of the wetland have been drained and converted to arable land. Some studies have been conducted into the effects of land use change on material cycles in the Sanjiang Plain wetlands but few reports have discussed the C/N and C/P ratios and pH values as indicators of wetland degradation due to land use changes. We selected eight land uses: humus marsh (HM), marshy meadow (MM), drained humus marsh (DHM), drained marshy meadow (DMM), tillage land (TL), abandoned land (AL), natural secondary forest (NSF) and artificial forest (AF), in the Honghe area of the Sanjiang Plain. We studied changes in the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), C/N and C/P ratios and pH values in topsoil (0–20 cm) of these eight different land uses. The possible mechanisms underlying the changes, and the significance of the C/N and C/P ratios as indicators of soil quality were also discussed. In the natural wetland, the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in the soil were high, with values of 203.5 g/kg, 20.2 g/kg and 1.44 g/kg, respectively, in HM; and 59.2 g/kg, 5.28 g/kg and 0.83 g/kg, respectively, in MM. Drainage of the HM has led to decreases in the TOC, TN and TP concentrations of about 50%. Significant decreases were also observed in TOC, TN and TP for NSF and AF compared to HM. Drained MM led to decreases in the TOC and TN of about 45%, but had little effect on TP. Marshy meadow that had been drained for more than 10 years experienced an exponential decline in TOC, TN and TP, with decreases of more than 60% for TOC and TN, and 20% for TP. However, after being abandoned for a short time (5 years), the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in soil experienced little change because poor water conditions combined with low productivity led to a large loss of soil organic matter. Land use change in the marsh areas has led to a decrease in C/N and C/P ratios of the soil, which are positively related to TOC and TN with different land uses (P < 0.05). Marsh reclamation has led to decreasing C/N and C/P ratios in soil and increasing pH values, which are negatively related to TOC, TN and TP (P < 0.05). Changes in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in soil with different land uses were mainly regulated by water-heat conditions and microbial activity, while the C/N and C/P ratios were mainly regulated by substrate availability. Our results suggest that C/N and C/P ratios and the pH value could be used as indicators to evaluate the quality and nutrient status of wetland soil under different land uses.  相似文献

This study describes the effects of the American red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii Girard, on water quality and sediment characteristics in the Spanish floodplain wetland, Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park. Our short term enclosure study during a summer drawdown revealed that crayfish acted as a nutrient pump that transformed and translocated sediment bound nutrients to the water column. Water quality impoverishment was mainly due to the increase of dissolved inorganic nutrients (soluble reactive phosphorus and ammonia), and a significant increase of total suspended solids occurred likely as a result of crayfish associated bioturbation. At the same time, crayfish reduced the content of organic matter in the sediment and we observed a slight increase of total sediment phosphorus and nitrogen content as a result of crayfish benthic activity. P. clarkii effects, in terms of internal nutrient loading (229.91 mg TP m–2 d–1), were shown to be important on a local scale, indicating the significance of internal nutrient supply to water column primary producers particularly under low external supply (summer). Extrapolations to the whole ecosystem, however, revealed a negligible crayfish contribution (0.06%) to total internal nutrient loading (0.035 mg TP m–2 d–1). Hence, crayfish spatial heterogeneity patterns are important in global and local matter fluxes and nutrient cycles in wetlands.  相似文献

Denitrification losses from a poorly drained clayey loamy soil under natural pasture were measured over a two-year period using the acetylene inhibition technique. Plots received two different applications of fertilizer as calcium ammonium nitrate or cow slurry (a total of 145–290 kg N ha–1 in 1991 and 120–240 kg in 1992). In the first year, N losses in the mineral treatments were about 4 times greater than losses in the slurry treatments. In the second year losses in the slurry treatments increased in such a way that losses in the higher slurry application became similar to those for the two mineral treatments. Soil nitrate was the factor producing differences between treatments. In this way, N mineralization in periods between fertilizations coinciding with high soil water contents was responsible in the second year for the increase in N losses in the slurry treatments. Denitrification rates greater than 0.1 kg N ha–1 day–1 occurred at soil water contents > 33 % (air filled porosity < 26 %) and soil nitrate contents > 1 mg N kg–1 dry soil. Spring and autumn were the seasons of highest risk of denitrification because of N fertilizations coinciding with periods of soil saturation with water. Winter losses were low, but this is a period when there is a risk of denitrification in wetter seasons, particularly for a slurry application management.  相似文献
