The effects of dietary cholesterol and fatty acids on the plasma cholesterol level and rates of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol secretion and low density lipoprotein (LDL) transport through LDL receptors in the liver of the hamster were investigated. Increases of plasma VLDL- and LDL-cholesterol levels and VLDL-cholesterol secretion from hepatocytes were observed in animals fed a diet enriched with 0.1% cholesterol for 2 weeks in comparison with animals fed a control diet. The addition of dietary palmitic acid accelerated the effect of dietary cholesterol on plasma VLDL- and LDL-cholesterol levels and VLDL-cholesterol secretion from hepatocytes. Dietary linoleic acid accelerated the effect of dietary cholesterol on VLDL-cholesterol secretion from hepatocytes and diminished the effect on the plasma LDL-cholesterol level. Hepatic LDL receptor activity was considerably suppressed by a control diet containing 0.05% cholesterol and a further small suppression was induced by a diet enriched with 0.1% cholesterol with or without 5% palmitic acid. However, dietary linoleic acid diminished the effect of dietary cholesterol on the suppression of hepatic LDL receptor activity. These results suggest that dietary palmitic acid augments the effect of dietary cholesterol in elevating the plasma LDL-cholesterol level through acceleration of VLDL-cholesterol secretion from the liver, and that dietary linoleic acid diminishes the effect of dietary cholesterol in elevating the plasma LDL-cholesterol level by preventing the suppression of hepatic LDL receptor activity induced by cholesterol.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss new evidence-based dietary recommendations founded on an inclusive food strategy and to address the challenges that are posed by integrating a growing list of heart healthy foods into the diet without increasing energy intake beyond that required to achieve a healthy body weight. RECENT FINDINGS: New food-based dietary recommendations issued by the American Heart Association with the objective of reducing risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) promote an inclusionary approach. The American Heart Association recommends a variety of foods to target four major goals: achieve a healthy overall diet, achieve a healthy weight, promote desirable lipid levels, and promote desirable blood pressure. Specific foods recommended include fruits and vegetables, grain products (including whole grains), fish, lean meat and poultry, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, and legumes. In addition, the new National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III recommends reductions in saturated fat and cholesterol and therapeutic dietary options for enhancing LDL-cholesterol lowering, with inclusion of plant stanols/sterols (2 g/day) and increased viscous (soluble) fiber (10-25 g/day). In parallel with the evolution of new dietary recommendations is the expanding list of specific foods that have cardioprotective effects. Additional foods on this list are nuts, soy, legumes, alcohol, tea, and garlic. SUMMARY: It will be challenging to include all foods that reduce CVD risk in the diet and still maintain energy control. Strategies are needed that facilitate developing heart healthy dietary patterns that maximally reduce CVD risk.  相似文献

It is likely that plant food consumption throughout much of human evolution shaped the dietary requirements of contemporary humans. Diets would have been high in dietary fiber, vegetable protein, plant sterols and associated phytochemicals, and low in saturated and trans-fatty acids and other substrates for cholesterol biosynthesis. To meet the body's needs for cholesterol, we believe genetic differences and polymorphisms were conserved by evolution, which tended to raise serum cholesterol levels. As a result modern man, with a radically different diet and lifestyle, especially in middle age, is now recommended to take medications to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Experimental introduction of high intakes of viscous fibers, vegetable proteins and plant sterols in the form of a possible Myocene diet of leafy vegetables, fruit and nuts, lowered serum LDL-cholesterol in healthy volunteers by over 30%, equivalent to first generation statins, the standard cholesterol-lowering medications. Furthermore, supplementation of a modern therapeutic diet in hyperlipidemic subjects with the same components taken as oat, barley and psyllium for viscous fibers, soy and almonds for vegetable proteins and plant sterol-enriched margarine produced similar reductions in LDL-cholesterol as the Myocene-like diet and reduced the majority of subjects' blood lipids concentrations into the normal range. We conclude that reintroduction of plant food components, which would have been present in large quantities in the plant based diets eaten throughout most of human evolution into modern diets can correct the lipid abnormalities associated with contemporary eating patterns and reduce the need for pharmacological interventions.  相似文献

Crude dietary fiber samples were prepared from beet, cabbage, Japanese radish, onion and mung bean sprouts (BF, CF, RF, OF and MF, respectively). These samples contained total dietary fiber at the levels of 814, 699, 760, 693 and 666 g/kg, respectively. To examine the effect of these dietary fiber sources on the plasma cholesterol concentration, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on a fiber-free (FF) diet or on an FF diet supplemented with 5% or 10% dietary fiber. Dietary fiber extracted from vegetables, wood cellulose (CL), pectin (PE) and guar gum (GG) were used as the fiber sources. Compared with the rats fed on the FF diet, a significant reduction in the plasma cholesterol concentration was observed in the rats fed on BF, CF, RF, MF, PE or GG after a 21-d feeding period. Cecal acetate, n-butyrate and total short-chain fatty acids were significantly higher in the rats fed on these dietary fibers, except for CF, than in those fed on the FF diet. A negative correlation was apparent between the total dietary fiber content, hemicellulose content and pectin content of each dietary fiber source and the plasma cholesterol concentration. These results suggest that some vegetable fibers exert a plasma cholesterol-lowering effect through cecal fermentation of these fibers.  相似文献

The perceived relationship between dietary cholesterol, plasma cholesterol and atherosclerosis is based on three lines of evidence: animal feeding studies, epidemiological surveys, and clinical trials. Over the past quarter century studies investigating the relationship between dietary cholesterol and atherosclerosis have raised questions regarding the contribution of dietary cholesterol to heart disease risk and the validity of dietary cholesterol restrictions based on these lines of evidence. Animal feeding studies have shown that for most species large doses of cholesterol are necessary to induce hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, while for other species even small cholesterol intakes induce hypercholesterolemia. The species-to-species variability in the plasma cholesterol response to dietary cholesterol, and the distinctly different plasma lipoprotein profiles of most animal models make extrapolation of the data from animal feeding studies to human health extremely complicated and difficult to interpret. Epidemiological surveys often report positive relationships between cholesterol intakes and cardiovascular disease based on simple regression analyses; however, when multiple regression analyses account for the colinearity of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat calories, there is a null relationship between dietary cholesterol and coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. An additional complication of epidemiological survey data is that dietary patterns high in animal products are often low in grains, fruits and vegetables which can contribute to increased risk of atherosclerosis. Clinical feeding studies show that a 100 mg/day change in dietary cholesterol will on average change the plasma total cholesterol level by 2.2-2.5 mg/dl, with a 1.9 mg/dl change in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and a 0.4 mg/dl change in high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Data indicate that dietary cholesterol has little effect on the plasma LDL:HDL ratio. Analysis of the available epidemiological and clinical data indicates that for the general population, dietary cholesterol makes no significant contribution to atherosclerosis and risk of cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

Levan polysaccharide, a type of fructan, has been shown to have industrial applications as a new industrial gum in the fields of cosmetics, foods like dietary fiber and pharmaceutical goods. The objective of this current study was to investigate the possible hypolipidemic and antioxidative effects of levan in rats fed with a high-cholesterol diet. Animals were allocated into four groups of six rats each: a normal diet group (Control), normal rats received levan (L), a high-cholesterol diet group (Chol) and a high-cholesterol diet with a daily dose of levan equivalent to 5%. Treated hypercholesterolemic rats were administrated with levan in drinking water through oral gavage for 60 days. After the treatment period, the plasma antioxidant enzymes and lipid profiles were determined. Our results show that treatment with levan polysaccharide positively changed plasma antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles (total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides) in cholesterol-rats, and thus may have potential hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects. Levan could protect against oxidative stress linked atherosclerosis and decrease the atherogenic index.  相似文献

Despite the physiochemical complexity of dietary fibers (plant cell walls) and their individual components, there is substantial epidemiologic, clinical, and experimental evidence that these dietary components may have a role in modifying certain risk factors in coronary heart disease. Particulate fibers, such as wheat bran, do not appear to significantly alter plasma lipids or lipoprotein distributions in humans, or the atherogenicity of diets in experimental animals. Dietary fibers found in fruits, legumes, and vegetables, in contrast, show more definitive responses. Among the fiber isolates, the gelling and mucilaginous fibers, such as pectins and guar gum, predictably decrease circulating lipids in humans and animals and increase excretion of fecal metabolites of cholesterol, the bile acids. These fibers and fiber components can be shown to influence luminal solubility of lipids and the extent of lymphatic absorption of both cholesterol and triglyceride. In addition, these same fibers are effective in reducing postprandial levels of glucose, insulin, and other hormones. These direct effects on lipid absorption, and secondary effects of glucose and insulin on hepatic and peripheral lipoprotein metabolism, can account for many of the hypolipidemic responses to specific dietary fibers or their components, and may be of long-term consequence in coronary heart disease.  相似文献

NUTRIOSE6 is a new wheat starch-based low-digestible carbohydrate. This study investigated the effect of this soluble non-viscous fiber on cholesterol metabolism. Hamsters fed with 0.25% cholesterol-enriched diet (CHO) were given graded amounts of NUTRIOSE6, i.e., 0% (cellulose, CHO), 3% (N3), 6% (N6) or 9% (N9) (w:w). As compared to CHO diet, 9% NUTRIOSE6 significantly lowered plasma and LDL cholesterol by 14.5 and 23.8%, respectively. The LDL-cholesterol lowering effect was also significant with the 6% dose (-21.4%). NUTRIOSE6 diets prevented hepatic cholesterol accumulation (-10 to -20%) and significantly decreased bile cholesterol (-47 to -68%) and phospholipids (-30 to -45%) concentrations. The 9% NUTRIOSE6 diet significantly decreased the rate of dietary cholesterol absorption (-25%) and markedly stimulated faecal neutral sterol (+81%) and bile salts (+220%) excretion. No significant change in cholesterol 7-alpha-hydroxylase or LDL-receptor activities was observed whereas 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase activity was reduced by 29%. Reduced cholesterol and bile salt absorptions and lowered cholesterol synthesis are likely mechanisms underlying the cholesterol lowering effect of NUTRIOSE6. Results suggest the use of NUTRIOSE6 as a new dietary cholesterol-lowering agent that should be tested in humans as treatment and evenly prevention of mild hypercholesterolemia.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose is to evaluate recent findings concerning dietary fats and the risk of coronary heart disease. Monounsaturated fatty acids are often regarded as healthy, and many have recommended their consumption instead of saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Support for the benefits of monounsaturated fatty acids comes largely from epidemiological data, but they have not been an isolated, single variable in such studies. Beneficial effects on the plasma lipid profile and LDL oxidation rates have also been identified. More recent findings have questioned the impact of suspected beneficial effects on coronary heart disease, indicating that studies with more conclusive endpoints are needed. RECENT FINDINGS: Human dietary studies often produce conflicting results regarding the effects of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids on the plasma lipid profile. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids both appear to reduce total and LDL-cholesterol compared with saturated fatty acids; however, the effect on HDL is less clear. Lowered HDL levels in response to low-fat or polyunsaturated fatty acid diets and the decreased protection from oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid-enriched LDL may not indicate increased coronary heart disease risk. Several lines of evidence also suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids may protect against atherosclerosis. SUMMARY: Recommendations to substitute monounsaturated fatty acids for polyunsaturated fatty acids or a low-fat carbohydrate diet seem premature without more research into the effects on the development of atherosclerosis. Current opinions favoring monounsaturated fatty acids are based on epidemiological data and risk factor analysis, but are questioned by the demonstrated detrimental effects on atherosclerosis in animal models.  相似文献

Nine normal women, 22 to 37 years old, consumed controlled quantities of natural foods to test their responses to dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. All diets contained, as percentage of calories, 14% protein, 31% fat, and 55% carbohydrate. The main sources of polyunsaturated and saturated fats were corn oil and lard, respectively, and egg yolk was used for cholesterol supplementation. All subjects participated in four diet protocols of 15 days duration, and each diet period was separated by 3 weeks without diet control. The first diet (corn) was based on corn oil, had a polyunsaturated to saturated fat ratio (P/S) of 2.14, and contained 130 mg of cholesterol. The second diet (corn+) was identical to the first but contained a total of 875 mg of cholesterol. The third diet (lard) was based on lard, had a P/S ratio of 0.64, and contained 130 mg of cholesterol. The fourth diet (lard+) was identical to the third, but contained 875 mg of cholesterol per day. Changes of the plasma lipid, lipoprotein and apoprotein parameters relative to the corn diet were as follows: the corn+ diet significantly increased total plasma cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and apoB levels; the lard diet significantly increased total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and apoB; and the lard+ diet significantly increased the total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and apoA-I and apoB levels. There were no significant variations in VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, or apoE levels with these diets. The diets affected both the number of lipoprotein particles as well as the composition of LDL and HDL. Compared to the corn diet, cholesterol and saturated fat each increased the number of LDL particles by 17% and 9%, respectively, and the cholesterol per particle by 9%. The combination of saturated fat and cholesterol increased particle number by 18% and particle size by 24%. Switching from lard+ to lard, corn+, or corn diets reduced LDL-cholesterol of the group by 18%, 11%, and 28%, respectively, while a large inter-individual variability was noted. In summary, dietary fat and cholesterol affect lipid and lipoprotein levels as well as the particle number and chemical composition of both LDL and HDL. There is, however, considerable inter-individual heterogeneity in response to diet.  相似文献

Sham-operated and cecectomized rats were fed a cholesterol-free diet with no added fiber (fiber-free) for 10 days, followed by the diet of 15% beet fiber for 10 days. The plasma cholesterol concentrations in rats fed the fiber-free diet were not significantly different between sham-operated and cecectomized groups. Plasma cholesterol concentrations in sham-operated rats were decreased by feeding the beet fiber diet, whereas those in cecectomized rats did not change. Final plasma total cholesterol concentrations in cecectomized rats were significantly higher than in sham-operated rats. This difference was due mainly to lower HDL cholesterol concentrations. The cecectomized rats also tended to have higher apolipoprotein A-I concentrations in plasma. Northern blot analysis revealed that the relative concentrations of ileal apolipoprotein A-I mRNA were the same in the two groups, while hepatic apolipoprotein A-I mRNA levels were significantly higher in cecectomized rats than in sham-operated rats. These data demonstrate that the cecectomy abolished the hepatic apolipoprotein A-I mRNA-lowering effect of dietary beet fiber, and it is suggested that the cecum plays an important role in the regulation of hepatic apolipoprotein A-I expression which seems to be responsible for the hypocholesterolemic effect of dietary beet fiber.  相似文献

Dietary intake of industrially hydrogenated trans fatty acids (TFA) has been associated with coronary heart disease. Dietary flaxseed can inhibit atherosclerosis induced by dietary cholesterol. The aim of this study was to determine whether supplementing the diet with flaxseed could protect against atherosclerosis induced by a diet enriched in TFA. Low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (LDLr(-/-)) mice were fed 1 of 14 experimental diets for 14 wk containing one of two fat sources [regular (pork/soy) or trans fat] at two concentrations (4 or 8%) and supplemented with or without dietary cholesterol (2%), whole ground flaxseed, or one of the components of flaxseed [α-linolenic acid (ALA), defatted fiber, or lignan]. Adding flaxseed to the diet partially mitigated the rise in circulating cholesterol levels induced by the cholesterol-enriched diet. Atherosclerosis was stimulated by TFA and/or cholesterol. Including milled flaxseed to an atherogenic diet significantly reduced atherosclerosis compared with the groups that consumed cholesterol and/or TFA. ALA was the only component within flaxseed that could inhibit the atherogenic action of cholesterol and/or TFA on its own. Dietary flaxseed protects against atherosclerotic development induced by TFA and cholesterol feeding through its content of ALA.  相似文献

These studies were undertaken to examine the effect of aging on low density lipoprotein (LDL) metabolism in the male hamster. When the hamsters were maintained on a low-cholesterol, low-triglyceride diet, rates of LDL transport in the various tissues of the body and plasma LDL-cholesterol concentrations remained constant over the entire life span (1-24 months) of the hamster. In contrast, rates of de novo cholesterol synthesis fell 50-97% in the various tissues of the body during the transition from rapid body growth in the young animal to the stable adult size. Thus, changes in tissue requirements for cholesterol over the life span of these animals were met by an appropriate adjustment in the rate of de novo synthesis rather than by alterations in LDL transport. When animals were fed a diet enriched in cholesterol and saturated triglycerides, rates of LDL production increased, total body LDL receptor activity was suppressed, and plasma LDL-cholesterol levels rose. Older animals, however, were not more susceptible than young animals to the detrimental effects of these dietary fats. These studies support the view that aging per se has not effect on LDL transport by the liver or other tissues. Rather, the progressive rise in plasma LDL-cholesterol levels seen in Western man is likely due to the consumption of a diet enriched in cholesterol and saturated triglyceride which increases the LDL-cholesterol production rate and suppresses receptor-dependent LDL transport.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To establish the role of cholesterol-modifying therapy in stroke prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: Population-based observational cohort studies show a variable weak positive relationship between increasing plasma total cholesterol concentrations and an increasing risk of ischaemic stroke, which is partly offset by a weaker negative association between decreasing total cholesterol concentrations and an increasing risk of with haemorrhagic stroke. However, randomized controlled trials show unequivocally that lowering plasma total cholesterol by approximately 1.2 mmol/l (and LDL-cholesterol by 1.0 mmol/l) is associated with a reduced relative risk of stroke and other serious vascular events by at least a quarter, and probably a third, without any increase in haemorrhagic stroke, in a wide range of men and women (including individuals with previous stroke). The proportional reduction in stroke risk is consistent, irrespective of the patient's age, baseline plasma cholesterol concentration, and absolute risk of stroke (although perhaps less in very low-risk individuals), but is increased with greater degrees of cholesterol lowering (15% or more), and thus with statin medications, which are more potent than non-statin interventions in lowering cholesterol levels. The absolute reduction in stroke risk achieved by statins is greatest among individuals at highest risk of stroke. Preliminary evidence suggests that lowering total cholesterol levels by diet may be an effective adjunctive therapy to statins, and raising plasma HDL-cholesterol concentrations among patients with coronary heart disease and low HDL-cholesterol levels ( 1 mmol/l) by means of gemfibrozil may also effectively prevent stroke. SUMMARY: Statin drugs are effective and safe in preventing initial and recurrent stroke. However, because they are costly, they should probably be restricted to individuals with an annual risk of stroke and other serious vascular events of 3% or greater, and possibly as low as 1.5%, because routine monitoring of plasma cholesterol, and liver and muscle enzyme concentrations is probably no longer necessary.  相似文献

The relationship between plasma levels of Lp[a] and LDL was examined using dietary regimens. In 81 normolipidemic male outpatients, dietary cholesterol was increased by consuming six eggs per day from a mean (SD) level of 311 (162) to 1430 (198) mg per day. Mean (SD) LDL-cholesterol levels increased from 102 (26) mg/dl to 120 (33) mg/dl (P less than 0.001), while mean (SD) Lp[a] levels were 5.5 (6.1) mg/dl on the basal diet and 5.6 (6.4) mg/dl on the cholesterol-rich diet. No significant correlation was observed between increases in either LDL-cholesterol or apolipoprotein B to Lp[a], nor was there any relationship between individual baseline levels of Lp[a] and dietary-induced changes of Lp[a]. Fourteen of the 81 participants were reexamined under strict nutritional control. Four diets with 40% of calories as fat, but differing in the type of fat and the amount of cholesterol, were administered sequentially to all subjects. As expected, mean (SD) LDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein B levels were highest on the saturated fat, high cholesterol diet (112 (32) mg/dl and 79 (22) mg/dl) and lowest on the polyunsaturated fat, low cholesterol diet (77 (27) mg/dl and 53 (18) mg/dl). In contrast, mean Lp[a] levels did not significantly change among the four diets (range 4.2-4.9 mg/dl). No correlation of Lp[a] responses with changes in plasma lipids, apolipoproteins, or lipoproteins was observed on any diet. These data suggest that determinants of plasma Lp[a] levels are distinctly different from the determinants of plasma LDL levels in normolipidemic males.  相似文献

Background and Aims

As dietary saturated fatty acids are associated with metabolic and cardiovascular disease, a potentially interesting strategy to reduce disease risk is modification of the quality of fat consumed. Vegetable oils represent an attractive target for intervention, as they largely determine the intake of dietary fats. Furthermore, besides potential health effects conferred by the type of fatty acids in a vegetable oil, other minor components (e.g. phytochemicals) may also have health benefits. Here, we investigated the potential long-term health effects of isocaloric substitution of dietary fat (i.e. partial replacement of saturated by unsaturated fats), as well as putative additional effects of phytochemicals present in unrefined (virgin) oil on development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and associated atherosclerosis. For this, we used pumpkin seed oil, because it is high in unsaturated fatty acids and a rich source of phytochemicals.

Methods

ApoE*3Leiden mice were fed a Western-type diet (CON) containing cocoa butter (15% w/w) and cholesterol (1% w/w) for 20 weeks to induce risk factors and disease endpoints. In separate groups, cocoa butter was replaced by refined (REF) or virgin (VIR) pumpkin seed oil (comparable in fatty acid composition, but different in phytochemical content).

Results

Both oils improved dyslipidaemia, with decreased (V)LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels in comparison with CON, and additional cholesterol-lowering effects of VIR over REF. While REF did not affect plasma inflammatory markers, VIR reduced circulating serum amyloid A and soluble vascular adhesion molecule-1. NAFLD and atherosclerosis development was modestly reduced in REF, and VIR strongly decreased liver steatosis and inflammation as well as atherosclerotic lesion area and severity.

Conclusions

Overall, we show that an isocaloric switch from a diet rich in saturated fat to a diet rich in unsaturated fat can attenuate NAFLD and atherosclerosis development. Phytochemical-rich virgin pumpkin seed oil exerts additional anti-inflammatory effects resulting in more pronounced health effects.  相似文献

Work by other investigators has shown that an increase in dietary content of monounsaturated fatty acids can result in a decreased plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration. This observation, combined with the epidemiologic evidence that monounsaturated fat-rich diets are associated with decreased rates of death from coronary heart disease, suggests that inclusion of increased amounts of mono-unsaturated fat in the diet may be beneficial. The present study was carried out in a primate model, the African green monkey, to evaluate the effects of dietary monounsaturated fat on plasma lipoprotein cholesterol endpoints. Two study periods were carried out in which the fatty acid compositions of the experimental diets were varied. All diets contained 35% of calories as fat. In the first experimental period, a mixture of fats was used to set the dietary fatty acid composition to be approximately 50-60% of the desired fatty acid, either saturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated (n-6). In the second experimental period, pure fats were used (palm oil, oleic acid-rich safflower oil, and linoleic acid-rich safflower oil) to maximize the difference in fatty acid composition. The effects of the more exaggerated dietary fatty acid differences of period 2 were similar to those that have been reported in humans. For the group fed the diet enriched in monounsaturated fat compared to saturated fat, whole plasma and LDL cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower while high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations were not affected. For the group fed the diet enriched in polyunsaturated fat compared to saturated fat, both LDL and HDL cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower than in the group fed saturated fat. LDL cholesterol concentrations were comparable in the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat groups and the percentage of cholesterol in LDL was lowest in the monounsaturated fat fed group. Trends were similar for the mixed fat diets, although no statistically significant differences in plasma lipoprotein endpoints could be attributed to monounsaturated fatty acids in this dietary comparison. Since effects on plasma lipoproteins similar to those seen in humans were identified in this primate model, relevant mechanisms for the effects of dietary fatty acids on lipoprotein endpoints related to coronary artery atherosclerosis, per se, can subsequently be examined.  相似文献

High intake of dietary fats, especially of saturated fatty acids, is an important risk of premature coronary heart disease. LDL‐cholesterol and HDL‐cholesterol in plasma are influenced by several dietary factors and are determining by different ways the development of arteriosclerosis. n‐3 and n‐6 polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential and in a suitable ratio play a beneficial role in prevention of arteriosclerosis. The benefit of vitamins as supplements is not convincing. In view of today's knowledge it makes little sense to ingest individual nutrients in high doses, instead one should encourage consumption of a wholesome diet moderate in fat and with high dietary fibre food.  相似文献

Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol are recommended to the American public for improving plasma lipoprotein patterns and reducing the risk of heart disease. However, since dietary intake cannot always be controlled, the effects of different degrees of dietary saturated fat lowering and occasional high saturated fat and cholesterol meals on the expected lipoprotein pattern improvement of these diets needs to be defined. In the current study, we compared lipid, lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein levels in 14 young normal volunteers on a metabolic ward when they were consuming a high saturated fat diet (42% fat), an AHA Phase II diet (25% fat), and a third diet which approximated the AHA Phase I diet (30% fat). The latter actually consisted of intermittent ingestion of meals high in saturated fat and cholesterol on the background of an AHA Phase II diet (Intermittent Saturated Fat diet). When compared to the high saturated fat diet, the AHA Phase II diet significantly reduced total, low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, apoB, and apoA-I levels, and improved the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio, whereas the intermittent saturated fat diet lowered total and LDL cholesterol and apoB levels, and also improved the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio. When compared to the AHA Phase II diet, the intermittent saturated fat diet raised total and HDL cholesterol levels. Thus, in these normal volunteers, intermittent saturated fat ingestion, in the context of an overall 30% fat diet and a 25% fat diet, did not differ with respect to the effect on improving the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio.  相似文献
