1. This study presents a qualitative and quantitative survey of epibionts infesting two populations of the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus (L.). Using scanning electron microscopy, the prevalence, mean intensity, abundance, spatial preferences and distribution of organisms on various external surfaces were ascertained.
2. A diverse community, consisting primarily of protozoa and rotifers, utilised A. aquaticus as a substrate organism. Every individual A. aquaticus supported some form of epizoic life. Peritrich species comprised 89.2% of all epibionts. Carchesium polypinum, Pseudocarchesium aselli, Pseudocarchesium asellicola, Pseudocarchesium simulans and Opercularia hebes dominated the epifauna.
3. Highest epibiont burdens occurred on the mouthparts, the first few ventral segments and the gills and largely comprised the above peritrich species. Most epibionts exhibited some degree of site preference on the host. A distinct gill epifauna existed. Apart from Acineta tuberosa and Vorticella rotunda , which had equal prevalences on dorsal and ventral surfaces in one culture, most species largely avoided the dorsal surface.
4. Epibionts exhibited varying degrees of adaptation to life on a living substrate. They ranged from facultative species such as A. tuberosa , which are capable of colonising abiotic substrata, to Gymnodinoides aselli whose life cycle relies on interaction with A. aquaticus . Highly specialised species tended to exhibit the most pronounced and consistent site restriction.

ABSTRACT. A species of peritrich that attaches to gills of the skate, Raja erinacea , was identified by its original describer as a member of Caliperia , a genus characterized by having a noncontractile skeletal rod within the arms of its cinctum and by not having the cinctal arms bonded to one another at their tips. Our observations of the living ciliates confirmed by protargol impregnation and electron microscopy revealed that their cinctal arms are linked by a bouton and that the cytoskeletal structure within them has the fine structure of a myoneme. These characteristics place this peritrich unequivocally in the genus Ellobiophrya and it is thus renamed Ellobiophrya brevipes (Laird, 1959) n. comb. Clumps of epithelial cells clasped by the cincta of E. brevipes show damage at their bases but not on their luminal surfaces. The known species of Ellobiophrya are compared for significant structural differences that separate species of this genus.  相似文献

从滇池蓝藻水华中分离得到的铜锈微囊藻群体在实验室无机营养中解聚成单细胞,结果表明,群体微囊藻的生长速度明显低于单细胞微囊藻;前者具明显可见的胞外酸性多糖胶鞘,而单细胞则几乎没有;按常规方法分析比较两种细胞形态的毒性大小和毒素组成,发现群体微囊藻主要含有三种微囊藻毒素的异构体,而单细胞以MCLR为主;且单细胞微囊藻的毒性约为群体的10倍.二者的LDH和PGM同工酶酶谱也有差异.本研究为解释毒素的合成和调控机理提供了新的证据.    相似文献

Ciliates, being one of the main substrates in granular activated sludge (GAS) formation, are treated as a major factor in granulation process. Cilia beats of Opercularia asymmetrica provide a continuous nutrient flux, enhancing the colonization of bacteria on Peritrichia stalks. Given that the ciliates tend to live in colonies, the main focus of the present work was an analysis and comparison of the flow effects induced by a single ciliate and by a colony. Investigations of the flow generated by Opercularia asymmetrica were carried out using micro-particle image velocimetry with biocompatible seeding. The results obtained showed different flow structures for a single ciliate and a colony. Moreover, the synergetic work of Opercularia asymmetrica living in a colony is considered as effective fluid transport. Additionally, analysis of the shear and normal strain rates provided information on mixing phenomena within the fluid on the micro-scale. The influence of seeding substance concentration on the flow pattern was also studied.  相似文献

A programme was created to semi-automatically analyse protozoal digitised images. Principal Component Analysis technique was used for species identification. After data collection and mathematical treatment, a three-dimensional representation was generated and several protozoa (Opercularia, Colpidium, Tetrahymena, Prorodon, Glaucoma and Trachelophyllum) species could be positively identified.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among peritrichs remain unresolved. In this study, the complete small subunit rRNA (SSrRNA) gene sequences of seven species (Epistylis galea, Campanella umbellaria, Carchesium polypinum, Zoothamnium arbuscula, Vaginicola crystallina, Ophrydium versatile, and Opercularia microdiscum) were determined. Trees were constructed using distance-matrix, maximum-likelihood and maximum-parsimony methods, all of which strongly supported the monophyly of the subclass Peritrichia. Within the peritrichs, 1) E. galea grouped with Opercularia microdiscum and Campanella umbellaria but not the other Epistylis species, which indicates that the genus Epistylis might not be monophyletic; 2) the topological position of Carchesium and Campanella suggested that Carchesium should be placed in the family Zoothamniidae, or be elevated to a higher taxonomic rank, and that Campanella should be independent of the family Epistylididae, and probably be given a new rank; and 3) Opisthonecta grouped strongly with Astylozoon, which suggested that Opisthonecta species were not the ancestors of the stalked peritrichs.  相似文献

Parasitism has been argued as one of the major costs of breeding sociality in birds. However, there is no clear evidence for an increased parasite pressure associated with the evolutionary transition from solitary to colonial breeding. I used the pairwise comparative method to test whether colonial bird species incur in a greater risk of infection and if they must to face with a greater diversity of blood parasites (Haematozoa), by comparing pairs of congeners that included one solitary and one colonial breeding species. The richness, both in terms of number of species and number of genera, as well as the prevalence of blood parasites resulted higher in colonial species than in their solitary breeding sisters, while controlling for differences in research effort and other potentially confounding effects. These results point towards higher transmission rates of blood parasites among colonial hosts. Given the detrimental effects of blood parasites on their host fitness, the higher risk of infection and the exposition to a more diverse parasite fauna may have imposed an important cost associated to the evolution of avian coloniality. This may help to explain why colonial species have larger immune system organs, as well as to explore differences in other host life history traits potentially shaped by blood parasites.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Pentrich ciliates attached to small stones from the beds of two streams, one large with hard water, the other small with soft water, were enumerated throughout an annual cycle. Throughout the year, Platycola was the dominant peritrich in both streams, except for a brief period during the spring when Vorticella and Carchesium predominated. Vorticella reached peak levels of 89 ciliates cm2 of stone surface, and up to 102 Platycola per cm2 of stone surface were found. Mean volumes of samples of the main species were calculated, and used to estimate the standing stock biomasses. using a standard value of dry weight per unit volume. Published values of the growth rates of representatives of the main genera were used to estimate production values, which totalled about 6.5 g dry weight of peritrich cytoplasm/m2 of stream bed per annum in the large stream (mean annual density = 8.3 peritrichs/cm2 of stone surface), and 33 g dry weight/m2 of stream bed per annum in the small stream (mean annual density = 47 peritrichs/cm2 of stone surface). The haptophyte Phaeocystis antarctica Karsten is a dominant species within the seasonal bloom in the Ross Sea. One of the unique characteristics of this form is that carbon is partitioned between the cells and the colonial matrix, a relationship that is poorly documented for this region. We combined particulate organic carbon measurements and microscopic analysis of P. antarctica -dominated samples to assess the contribution of single cells, colony-associated cells, and mucilage to the carbon concentrations of waters with P. antarctica. Two cruises to the Ross Sea were completed, one in austral spring 1994 and one in summer 1995–1996. In 1994 the bloom was dominated by colonial P. antarctica that contributed up to 96% of the total autotrophic carbon, whereas in 1995–1996 a mixture of P. antarctica and diatoms occurred. P. antarctica colony volume ( V ) was related to colonial cell number ( N C) by the relationship V = 417 × N C1.67. Total colony carbon (CCOL) was calculated as the sum of cell carbon (CCC) and mucus-related carbon (CM). We found the contribution of mucus carbon to be 213 ng C mm 3 of colony volume. For P. antarctica -dominated assemblages sampled at the peak of the bloom, CM represented a minor fraction (14 ± 4%) of colony carbon, and during early summer conditions CM was at most 33% of CCOL. This organism plays a cardinal role in the carbon cycle of many regions. These results constrain the partitioning of carbon between cellular material and the colony matrix, information that is necessary to accurately describe the biogeochemical cycles influenced by this species.  相似文献

The transmission of Epistylis daphniae infection among Boeckella triarticulata and the effect of peritrich epizoites on the copepod hosts were examined at 15 °C in the laboratory. After being paired with carrier copepodites, 97.5% of non-carrier adults became hosts to E. daphniae. When food was present there was no difference between carriers and non-carriers in growth of copepodites, and in survival and reproduction of adults. When food was absent, copepods infected with E. daphniae survived for shorter periods than non-carriers (p < 0.002). Therefore, colonial peritrichs may contribute to the decline of copepod populations when they are in a food-limited environment.  相似文献

Bacteriol. 87:1003-1010. 1964.-Evidence is presented that dissociation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa occurs in vivo as well as in vitro, although it is suppressed in the blood stream. Of 116 primary cultures on blood agar, 77 (66%) had more than one colony type, with a range of 2 to 6 types per culture. Dissociation was studied in 14 primary cultures during 30 serial blood agar passages. Six of these did not dissociate. Of the six, three were originally primary monocolony strains, and three were strains with two colonial types. Seven of the remaining eight cultures had more than one colony type on the primary culture plate. These eight cultures were observed to dissociate at varying rates; 25 morphological and biochemical tests failed to reveal important differences in the colonial dissociants. However, they may be differentiated by bacteriophage action. Colonial morphology in a given strain of P. aeruginosa can be correlated with its bacteriophage lytic pattern, but patterns frequently undergo drastic change during subculture of the organism. The frequently seen different colonial forms in a specific primary culture are usually related, as proven by bacteriophage typing. Phenotypic colony changes after lysogenization were observed. Mucoid colonial variants are markedly more sensitive than are the nonmucoid to streptomycin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol.  相似文献

Despite the growing awareness of the ecological importance of epibiont-host associations, detailed inventories for planktonic hosts are rare. Here, we provide an updated checklist of the peritrich and suctorian epibiont ciliates (Ciliophora) on the cladocerans (Crustacea: Cladocera). Thirty-nine species of peritrich ciliates (of which 34 are assigned to species) and three species of suctorian ciliates are found to be epibionts on the Cladocera. Fifty-eight cladoceran taxa are known to be hosts of the ciliate epibionts, 33 of these hosts (57%) are planktonic. Seven taxa were determined to the level of genus. Complete species designations were geographically biased (38 of 51 species) towards European sites, suggesting poor taxonomic knowledge beyond Europe. Also, the recently discovered continental endemism of cladoceran hosts could indicate that associated ciliates are more diverse than previously appreciated.  相似文献

Ambiphrya ameiuri is an ectocommensal peritrich that attaches to the gills of warm-water fishes and filters bacteria from the water. The ultrastructure of this protozoon, its attachment to the fish gills, and its effect on the gill tissue were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The peritrich attached to the gills by fibers extending from the scopula. A microtubular array, apparently a barren kinetosome, was present in each lobular projection, but no scopular cilia were observed. At low densities Ambiphrya had no apparent harmful effects on the fish; however, at high densities respiration may be impeded. Ultrastructural studies indicate that this organism receives no nourishment from the host tissue.  相似文献
