The speed of development and the developmental mortality of Tribolium castaneum were studied over a series of temperatures between 15 and 40°C. at 10, 30, 70 and 90% R.H. using wheatfeed as food.
Eggs did not hatch at any humidity at 17·5°C. or less, nor at 10% R.H. at 40°C. At all other conditions about 80% of eggs hatched. Humidity does not affect the duration of the egg period. The effect of temperature on the egg period is shown graphically, the shortest period occurring at 37·5°C.
Larvae fail to develop into normal adults at 20°C. and also fail at 90 and 30% R.H. at 40°C. At 20°C. and 70% R.H. pupae may be formed but they do not become normal adults. The rate of larval development is affected by both temperature and humidity. Development is quickest at the highest humidity used at any temperature and at 35°C. for each humidity. Larval mortality is less than 20% except at 40°C. and at combinations of low humidity and low temperature. The results correspond with published results using similar foodstuffs.
Groundnuts were used as a food in a series of experiments at 30°C. and another series at 70% R.H. Larvae on this food were much more susceptible to the effects of humidity and were unable to develop at 20 or 40°C. at 70% R.H. In all conditions development was slower and mortality higher than on wheatfeed.
The pupal period is not affected by humidity and is shortest at 37·5°C.
The conditions in which Park found that cultures of T. castaneum became extinct, 24°C. and 30% R.H., lie inside the zone in which development is possible. The possible causes for this discrepancy are discussed.  相似文献

Larvae failed to develop to pupae at 17.5° C., at 10% R.H. at 20° C, and at 10 and 90% R.H. at 37.5° C. The rate of larval development was affected by both temperature and humidity being quickest at the higher humidities and at about 32.5° C. Larval mortality was less than 16% except at 37.5° C., at 10% R.H. or less, and at 20°C., 90% R.H.
The duration of the pupal period was not affected by humidity and was shortest at 37.5°C. The total developmental period is compared with that of T. castaneum over the range of temperature and humidity conditions in which both species can grow. The optimum for developmental speed and the maximum and the minimum temperatures at which development is possible were all about 2.5°C. lower for T. confusum than for T. castaneum. The developmental periods for the two species were equal at temperatures between 23 and 27°C., depending on humidity. At lower temperatures, T. confusum developed the more quickly and at higher temperatures the more slowly.  相似文献

Abstract. An analysis of three biochemical parameters during growth of white mustard in continuous white light (WL) has been undertaken at 10°, 15° and 20°C. The time required for anthocyanin and chlorophyll content and nitrate reductase [E.C. 1661 NAD(P)H: nitrate oxidoreductase] activity (NRA) to reach a peak in the cotyledons is shown to be temperature dependent, the rise in chlorophyll content being delayed to a much greater extent than anthocyanin content. In addition, with NRA, there is a significant increase in the level of the peaks with a lowering of temperature.
The NRA in dark-grown plants has been investigated in detail at 10°C. The pre-competence time for this response is increased to 20–24 h, compared with 14 h in seeds grown at 25°C. Other responses are affected far more by the lower temperature; for example, time for 50% loss of photoreversibility of a red (R) pulse in 48-h-old seeds is approximately 13 h, compared with 8 min in seeds grown at 25°C. At 25°C, light treatments during precompetence have been found to increase significantly the effectiveness of a subsequent R pulse on NRA; at 10°C, this effect appears to be almost entirely absent.  相似文献

The effects of environmental factors on infection of the entomopathogenic fungus, Nomuraea rileyi , isolated from the corn earworm, Helicoverpa armigera , in Taiwan, to its host insect were studied in the laboratory. The fungus caused higher larval mortality at 20°C than at 30°C when 5 × 106 conidia/ml were sprayed on the fourth instar. However, mortality of the fifth instar injected with 1 × 103 conidia/larva was not significantly different when the inoculated larvae were incubated from 15 to 30°C. The fungal development in inoculated larvae was best at 20 and 25°C after shifting from 20°C to either lower or higher temperatures. The germination rate was higher at 20 and 25°C than at 30 or 35°C. Conidial germination was better on the wash-off of insect cuticle than on Sabouraud maltose agar with yeast extract. Sporulation on chill-dried cadavers was maximal at 95 or 100% relative humidity than at lower levels of relative humidity. The time required for sporulation was 2 days less at 100% than at 95% relative humidity. Although photoperiod did not affect fifth instar mortality caused by N. rileyi , the median lethal time (LT50) values were shorter upon incubating under light than in darkness. Incubation of infected cadavers under 12 or 24 h light resulted in 20-fold more conidial production than under full darkness. Therefore, illumination is necessary for development of this isolate on insect cadavers.  相似文献

Undisturbed hibernating Greater horseshoe bats were studied over three winters to find the effect of temperature on arousal frequency, timing of arousals and the selection of a hibernation site. The study showed that temperature is important in all three aspects and the ability to select a temperature zone accurately is an important factor in the survival of hibernation by a bat.
The arousal frequency falls with falling ambient temperature then seems to rise again below 6°C. There is a clear seasonal effect, bats waking up on average once a day at 10.5°C in winter compared with 8.5°C in spring. An arousal frequency of once in six days occurs at 8°C in winter compared with 6°C in spring. This shift of 2°C is compensated for by a shift of 2°C in temperature selection by the bats in relation to the same external climatic temperatures on the day of arousal. It appears that bats may select the temperature zone which, if prolonged, will result in the most advantageous arousal frequency in relation to feeding experiences.
The seasonal effect discovered indicates that inhibition of the arousal process is important in hibernation and a hormone is postulated.  相似文献

The effect of relative humidity (r.h.) (0%, 34% and 75%) and temperature (4, 15 and 25°C) on the desiccation survival of Pseudomonas sp., Acinetobacter calcoaceticus , a coryneform, Staphylococcus sp., and Staphylococcus aureus attached to and grown on glass surfaces was studied. The survival of Gram-negative and Gram-positive species was similar. Bacterial survival was shortest at 25°C for all species studied, and in most cases longest at 4°C. The effect of r.h. on survival varied with species. The number of microcolonies and the number of cells within microcolonies for Pseudomonas sp. increased on the dry surfaces after 7 d incubation under all desiccation conditions.  相似文献

A test is described which permits the determination of the respiratory rate of the insect to respond to, and recover from a short series of temperature changes. Both the transient and steady state respiratory responses were studied in the pupa, male and female of four species of tropical butterflies, Heliconius melpomene Linn., Papilio demoleus Wallace, Danaus chrysippus Linn., and Hypolimnas bolina Fabr., following a decrease and then an increase in environmental temperature.
Primary data consists of weight, oxygen consumption, and duration time of the transients; secondary data calculated from the above consisted of the Respiratory Change Ratio (RCR) and the % Recovery.
The RCR values were similar in pupa, male and female within a species, but showed significant differences between species, H. melpomene showing least change for a 10°C temperature change and H. bolina most. The ability to recover varied within and between species. In D. chrysippus there was no difference between pupa male and female; in H. bolina , pupa, male and female differed significantly in this. Heliconius melpomene showed very poor recuperative powers.
The most notable difference in the transients was the slow change following a drop in temperature compared with the instant increase to the steady state value following an increase in temperature. The duration of transients for body temperature were the same for both an increase and a decrease. The respiratory rate of the animal and its body temperature are clearly uncoupled during this period.
The transition of the respiratory rate associated with a decrease in temperature showed a smooth curve for the pupa but a momentary increase occurs in the adult.
A hypothesis is proposed to account for these results and their possible significance in the distribution and choice of a habitat by the butterflies discussed.  相似文献

Detailed studies on the environment in malt stores and its effect on the Khapra beetle are described. The observations are correlated with the conclusions from parallel laboratory work.
Bulks of malt are stored at 26–69° C. and cooling near their centres is slow. After loading, the distribution of heat is controlled mainly by the position of the kiln, the size of the store and the development of Khapra infestations. Three zones of temperature may be recognized, too hot for Khapra (above 40° C.), favourable (30–40° C.) and too cool for rapid breeding (below 30° C.). Population growth may be progressively retarded by cooling, or heat from the kiln and insect-heating may allow continuous breeding, although part of the malt may be heated above 40° C., causing migration of the larvae. Some migrants stop in a new favourable zone and others continue into the cool zone, often for a long way.
The larva is the most prominent stage in most populations. Throughout population growth, low temperature and the accumulation of faecal pellets cause some larvae to enter diapause and hide either in crevices or on the walls just below the malt surface. After the malt is unloaded, huge numbers of larvae may be hidden and some may survive for more than 4 years. Reloading with new, hot malt stimulates some of the cryptic larvae to emerge, pupate and breed. More larvae emerge from the hottest positions than from elsewhere. The very sharp gradient of humidity in stores does not appear to influence larval behaviour. In contrast to unmalted cereals, malt is too dry to allow a significant upward translocation of moisture above a hot region.
Control is very difficult. Current methods involve persistent attack on larvae in empty stores with methyl bromide and contact insecticides, combined with structural improvements. Control by cooling the malt before storage is promising.  相似文献

Variation in density of flying fish along a transect across the Indian Ocean between Fre-mantle and Cape Gardafui, has been studied by counting, during three voyages on freighters, the flights induced by the passage of the ship. Two regions of maximum density were found, one in the region of 7°N., 58°E. and the other in the region of 5°S., 75°E. The causes of variation in the distribution are discussed briefly.
The influence of some environmental factors on the flight of fish disturbed by the passage of a ship has been examined, and it has been concluded that wind force and direction, water temperature, and the components of weather, have little influence upon the choice of flight as a means to escape the disturbance. On the other hand, the bearing of the sun in relation to the direction of movement of the fish through the water before taking to flight has a considerable effect, fish being less likely to take to flight when their escape path is directed towards the sun than when it is directed away from the sun.  相似文献

Abstract The buoyancy regulation in light-limited cultures of the gas vacuolate cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa AK1 was studied at three temperatures, 15, 20 and 28°C. At the two highest temperatures the organism remained buoyant during the entire light period, whereas at the lowest temperature the buoyancy was reduced at the start of the light period. With this temperature the buoyancy was lost during the light period. This reduced buoyancy was caused by an increase in ballast and a decrease in the gas vesicle volume. Buoyancy changes during a transient state with slow changes in temperatures, i.e., 1°C per day, were caused by changes in polysaccharide ballast. The gas vesicle volume showed no significant change during the transient state.
The maximal photosynthetic rate was dependent upon the growth and incubation temperature, whereas the light harvesting efficiency was independent of the temperature. The results are discussed in an ecological context.  相似文献

The activity of the land snails Cepaea nemoralis (L.), C. hortensis (Müll.) and Arianta arbustorum (L.) was measured over 24 hours at the constant temperatures of 0, 3, 8, 17, 22 and 26°C at 100% relative humidity and with 16 hours light and 8 hours dark. The activity of all three species varies significantly with temperature and light, and there are differences in the activities of the species at each temperature. A. arbustorum is relatively more active than Cepaea at low rather than high temperatures, as is C. hortensis with respect to C. nemoralis , though to a lesser extent. There is little diurnal rhythm in activity at 0°C, but all species become more nocturnal as temperature increases; C. nemoralis is most, and A. arbustorum least nocturnal. The results obtained assist in explaining the observed geographical and local distributions of the species concerned.  相似文献

Data on adult longevity, reproduction and intrinsic rate of population increase of insect parasitoid Amitus fuscipennis MacGown and Nebeker (Hym., Platygasteridae) were obtained under different climatic conditions on two bean cultivars. The insect host was the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hom., Aleyrodidae). On cv. Chocho, at 19°C, 75 ± 5% RH and at 22°C, 70 ± 5% RH, mean longevity of adult Amitus females on the host insect was 9.3 and 5.7 days; mean fertility was 64.1 eggs and 52.7 eggs; and rm values were 0.102 day–1 and 0.144 day–1 for the respective conditions. On cv. ICA-Pijao, at 19°C, 75 ± 5% RH, mean longevity was 15.2 days; mean fertility was highest (162.8 eggs); and rm value was 0.117 day–1. The rm values of Amitus were higher than those of its host under the same test conditions. This parasitoid may therefore be a suitable candidate for use in inoculative or seasonal inoculative control programs against T. vaporariorum .  相似文献

The LT50 (lethal temperature) of first instar and adult stages of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae was lowered following long term acclimation at low temperatures.
First instars consistently showed greater cold hardiness than adult stages at each acclimation temperature, with the differential increasing as the temperature was lowered. When maintained at 5°C (the lowest acclimation regime) nymphs and adults had dLT508.3°C and 4.7°C respectively lower than those for non-acclimated individuals.
When 10°C acclimated adults were returned to 20°C, the acclimation effect was retained in full for 6 days but complete deacclimation occurred by day 10. In contrast the LT50 of their progeny increased gradually from the first day of adult deacclimation towards the level of the unacclimated control over a period of 10 days.
A change in cold hardiness was observed in first instars according to their position in the birth sequence. The LT50 of first-born nymphs (day 1 of reproduction) from 20°C parents was - 15.9°C rising to - 8.3°C by day 4 and remaining at this level until the end of the reproductive period.
The differential mortality between nymphs and adults observed in the laboratory was supported by the results of a field experiment. Adult aphids kept in clip-cages on a crop of oilseed rape showed greater mortality compared with those introduced as nymphs when the minimum temperature fell below -4°C for the first time in winter. At - 10°C mortality of aphids introduced as adults approached 100% whereas more than 50% of those introduced as nymphs were still alive at this temperature.  相似文献

Abstract: The influence of temperature on life table parameters of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Het., Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae was studied. This predator was kept at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 33±0.2°C, at relative humidity of 60±10% and photoperiod of L : D 14 : 10. Gross (GRR) and net ( R 0) reproductive rates of P. nigrispinus ranged from 1.6 to 366.6 and from 0.02 to 189.5 females/female at temperatures of 33 and 28°C, respectively; generation time ( T  ) ranged from 33.3 (33°C) to 85.5 (20°C) days; doubling time ( D ) from 0.82 (33°C) to 17.8 (20°C) days; intrinsic rate of increase ( r m ) from −0.13 (33°C) to 0.12 (28°C) per day; and the finite rate of increase ( λ ) from 0.88 (33°C) to 1.12 (28°C) females/female added to the population per day. The ideal age to release P. nigrispinus should be when this predator presents higher reproductive values (VR x ); that is, its adults are about 7 days old, independent of prevailing temperature. Population growth of P. nigrispinus was affected by temperature with maximum numerical response between 28 and 30°C. The negative population growth shown at 33°C may not occur in natural conditions due to milder microclimate in the cotton agroecosystem and due to oscillations of temperature in the course of the day.  相似文献

The length of the developmental instars of Calandra oryzae has been estimated at relative humidities of 50, 60, 70 and 80% at 21° C., at 70% at 18, 25 and 30° C., and at 80% at 18° C., by the dissection daily of samples of infested wheat-grains. The results are expressed as a median obtained by the method of probit analysis. Comparison of this method, with estimates of median and mean obtained by orthodox arithmetical methods from similar work on Rhizopertha , show that the probit method gives good estimates.
About 90% of the eggs laid are fertile. Normally only one adult will develop in a grain, all other individuals being destroyed by cannibalism. The sex ratio is unity. It was not possible to cross C. oryzae and C. granaria.
The daily oviposition rate of C. oryzae at 17, 21 and 25° C. increases with relative humidity. There is a critical point at about 60% r.h . below which egg laying declines rapidly, and mortality is high. At 100% r.h . the oviposition rates per female per day are approximately 1.3, 2.5 and 3.4 at 17, 21 and 25° C. respectively.
In experimental conditions most eggs per grain are obtained by giving isolated females one grain each, but more eggs are laid by females given more than one grain. Daily egg output is reduced by grouping females or including males. In culture, depths of grain up to 7 cm. do not discourage egg laying.  相似文献

Chilling tolerance in eight taxa was estimated from field and controlled environment observations and compared to tolerance estimated using a variety of techniques. The controlled environment observations suggested that the eight taxa could be ranked from chilling tolerant to chilling sensitive in the order: pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Greenfeast), Passiflora edulis Sims., Passiflora ligularis Juss. and Passiflora quadrangularis L., pepino ( Solanum muricatum L.) cultivars Comeraya, Suma, Miski, and mungbean [ Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilcz]; although the relationship between the passionfruit as a group and the pepinos was unclear.
The change in the variable component of chlorophyll fluorescence (FR) with time near 0°C in darkness was the most reliable method of ranking the plants according to relative chilling tolerance. It was also sufficiently sensitive to discriminate clearly between the closely related pepino cultivars. The Passiflora species and pea were not susceptible to short term reductions in FR, with or without a 20 min exposure to light. Exposure to light at temperatures near 0°C emphasised the reductions in FR in the more sensitive species. Pea was the only species capable of recovering a measurable FR after a 60 min exposure to white light.
Measurement of electrolyte leakage and ethylene evolution from leaf disks after a low temperature treatment could allow discrimination between closely related varieties, but not between genera. Catalase activity was reduced in all taxa in response to low temperature. However, both initial catalase levels and relative response to dark treatment at 20°C enabled the ranking of plants within the closely related subgroups according to susceptibility to chill injury.
No one method clearly distinguished chilling sensitivity over all taxa.  相似文献

Schooling chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta were biased towards the water surface (median position <1 m) under isothermal conditions (10° C) in a water column simulator (WCS). Thermal stratification (24/10° C) inhibited upward movement with fish congregating at the thermocline and displaying a clear avoidance of potentially lethal surface waters. A tri-phase model based on piece-wise nonlinear regression was used to describe the distribution shifts of chum salmon during a change from isothermal to thermally stratified conditions. Fish distribution was consistent with thermoregulatory behaviour and exhibited 'attraction', 'preference' and 'avoidance' phases. The thermal preference of 50% of the fish lay between 12·2 and 20·2° C, however, >83·5% of the fish occupied a 'preferred' temperature range of 13·7–17·9° C. The mean temperature at which 50% of chum salmon avoided rising temperature by shifting deeper in the water column and using the cooler thermocline was 20·2° C, and 90% avoidance occurred at 22·9° C. Behavioural responses to thermal stratification were consistent amongst underyearling fish of differing size and age.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate under a controlled environment, the effect of temperature on the survival and infectivity of Pseudotheraptus devastans Distant, a cassava anthracnose disease vector. The insect P. devastans was collected from young cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) field plots, at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. A mixture of the different developmental stages of eggs, first to fifth instar nymphs, and adults, were incubated in controlled environment chambers, under various constant temperatures of: 15, 17, 22, 25, 27, 30, and 35°C. Relative humidity at different temperature conditions were recorded and maintained at 90%, 85%, 80%, 75%, 70%, 65%, and 60%, respectively. A significant increase in insect survival was observed between 22 and 27°C temperature conditions while a significant decrease in survival was observed at 15°C and above 30°C. Lesion number, lesion diameter and infectivity among the insect stages varied as a function of temperature and relative humidity. Infectivity was highest at 22–25°C maintained at 75–80% RH and lowest at 15°C and above 30°C maintained respectively, at 65% RH and 90% RH. There was considerable low vector infectivity due to low survival of the insects at extreme temperatures.  相似文献

Aims:  To compare silver and copper, metals with known antimicrobial properties, by evaluating the effects of temperature and humidity on efficacy by challenging with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) .
Methods and Results:  Using standard methodology described in a globally used Japanese Industrial Standard, JIS Z 2801, a silver ion-containing material exhibited >5 log reduction in MRSA viability after 24 h at >90% relative humidity (RH) at 20°C and 35°C but only a <0·3 log at ∼22% RH and 20°C and no reduction at ∼22% RH and 35°C. Copper alloys demonstrated >5 log reductions under all test conditions.
Conclusions:  While the high humidity (>90% RH) and high temperature (35°C) utilized in JIS Z 2801 produce measurable efficacy in a silver ion-containing material, it showed no significant response at lower temperature and humidity levels typical of indoor environments.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The high efficacy levels displayed by the copper alloys, at temperature and humidity levels typical of indoor environments, compared to the low efficacy of the silver ion-containing material under the same conditions, favours the use of copper alloys as antimicrobial materials in indoor environments such as hospitals.  相似文献

The development ofPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and the effectiveness of it as a predator ofTetranychus urticae (Koch) were studied at constant temperatures of 15°, 18°, 21°, 24° and 27°C (humidity fluctuations from 60% to 90% R.H.) and at constant humidities of 40% and 80% R.H. at the temperatures 21° and 27°. Optimal temperature for time of development was 27° (at 60%–85% R.H.). A high reduction in egg vitality was recorded at 40% R. H. and 27% At 21° the egg vitality was only slightly lower at 40% R.H. than at 80% R.H. The predator gave control ofT. urticae at temperatures from 15° to 27° (humidity fluctuation from 60%–90% R.H.), and the most rapid and efficient control was obtained at 27° (60%–85% R.H.). The predator did not give sufficient control ofT. urticae at 27° and 40% R.H. At 21° control ofT. urticae was obtained at both 40% and 80% R.H., but the prey population was reduced faster at 80% R.H. than at 40% R.H.  相似文献
