This study shows that the size of the prey (Carcinus maenas) relative to the predator (Sepia officinalis) is of importance in the choice between two types of attack: either capture by ejection of the two extensible tentacles, or capture by jumping on the prey. Small crabs are preferentially captured by the first method and large crabs by the second. Other factors which may explain the observed variations, include previous experience of the predator and the behaviour of the prey.  相似文献

The results obtained from a phosphorus NMR study of the interactions of Mg2+ with thiamine diphosphate confirm the existence of a Mg-thiamine diphosphate complex with a 11 stoichiometry in which the α phosphorus seems to be the most influenced by the interaction. The variations of δ and Jαβ with various concentrations of Mg2+ are described.  相似文献

Lactate-grown cultures of Acinetobacter sp. strain 3B-1 synthesize constitutively all enzymes except the 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid-3-hydroxylase. All enzymes are further synthesized when strain 3B-1 is grown with 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Induction studies with two mutant strains, one defective in the 3-hydroxylase, and the other defective in the dehydrogenase, indicate that 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid induces the 3-hydroxylase only, and the second metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid appears to induce 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid-2,3-dioxygenase and subsequent enzymes. Thus, the enzymes of the 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid meta-cleavage pathway are synthesized following at least two sequential inductive events.  相似文献

Buspirone produces a dose-dependent but short-lived elevation in striatal dopamine (DA) metabolites in the rat. Invitro, buspirone possesses an affinity similar to sulpiride for DA receptors (3H-spiperone). A moderate affinity for α1 receptors was also observed while buspirone was inactive at α2, β, muscarinic and serotonin2 receptors. This pharmacological profile as well as previous behavioral data indicate that buspirone may be a potential “atypical” neuroleptic.  相似文献

The sugar composition of the growth medium influenced the NAD+NADH ratio, pyruvate and lactate production, and ATP levels in both normal and transformed fibroblast cell lines growing in tissue culture. Removal of glucose led to a rapid three- to fourfold rise in the NAD+NADH ratio, followed by a slower decline in the content of ATP. However, there was no change in the adenylate energy charge [(ATP + 12ADP)/(ATP + ADP + AMP)] over a 2-h period. The NAD+NADH ratio was restored to the original level within 10 s of glucose readdition. The NAD+NADHratios in cell lines growing on galactose were as high as for those incubated without sugars; growth on mannose or fructose produced intermediate ratios. There was an inverse relationship between the NAD+NADH ratio and pyruvate-lactate production for glucose, fructose and galactose. Thus, all cell lines had a high production of pyruvate and lactate but a low NAD+NADH ratio when grown on glucose. In contrast, when galactose served as the sugar source, acid production was low, while the ratio was high. All cell lines had comparable hexokinase activity, and glucose was the best substrate, mannose intermediate and fructose poorest. Hexokinase activity did not correlate with the relative degree of utilization of the sugars. These results suggest that the sugar composition of the growth medium affects the metabolic pattern of a cell line, including the NAD+NADH ratio, the ATP content and the production of pyruvate and lactate.  相似文献

The binding of magnesium ions to two tripeptides, L-Arg-D-Gla-D-Gla-OMe and Z-L-Arg(NO2)-D-Gla-D-Gla-OMe, and to bovine prothrombin fragment 1 as a function of pH has been monitored by 25Mg NMR spectroscopy. Binding to the tripeptide was dependent on peptide ionizations occurring at pH 4.6 – 4.8. The pH dependence of magnesium ion binding to fragment 1 reveals two inflection points 4.2 may be attributed to the deprotonation of the third side chain carboxylic acid group of the double γ-carboxyglutamic acid sequence. The origin of the increased binding of magnesium ions to fragment 1 at pH values above 7 is unknown.  相似文献

Mutations at the bithoraxoid (bxd) and postbithorax (pbx) loci cause a transformation of posterior haltere to posterior wing. It has previously been shown that pbx and pbxUbx101 cause this transformation by affecting the maintenance (or cell heredity function) of determination so that the transformed cells are indistinguishable from normal wing cells, and have no “memory” of having been part of a haltere disk (Adler, 1978a). I report here that Tp(3) bxd100Ubx101 and bxd1, pbx, ew both cause the transformation of posterior haltere to posterior wing in the same way as pbx. On the other hand, bxd1, bxd1Ubx101, bxd51j, bxd51jUbx101, and bxd51jred pbx cause this same transformation of posterior haltere to posterior wing by interfering with the expression of the determined state so that the developmental information of posterior haltere is “misread” as posterior wing. The transformed cells in these disks retain the memory of having been part of a haltere disk; that is, these posterior cells that would secrete wing cuticle during metamorphosis regenerate anterior haltere structures. Thus it appears clear that it is possible to uncouple the expression and cell heredity functions of determination in the haltere disk of Drosophila.  相似文献

This paper considers an animal foraging on prey which are distributed in well-defined patches. It is assumed that the environment may be stochastic and that the animal can gain information on patch type as it forages. The foraging policy which maximises mean reward rate for the environment is characterised in terms of a function of state called the potential function. This policy is shown to be given by the rule: continue foraging on the present patch while the potential is positive, when the potential falls to zero move on to the next patch. Let r denote the current reward rate on a patch and let γ denote the maximum mean reward rate for the environment. It is shown that r ? γ if it is optimal to leave. Conditions which ensure r < γ are also given. For a large class of environments the optimal policy is stated in terms of a revised reward rate r?, and is given by the rule: continue on the present patch while r? > γ, when r? falls to γ move on to the next patch. Finally, it is shown that the stay time on a patch is a decreasing function of γ.  相似文献

The results demonstrate the existence of L and M forms of pyruvate kinase in rat hepatomas. Tumours were induced by feeding N-Nitrosodiethylamine. The kinetic properties of the L-type tumour enzyme was markedly different from the L-enzyme form found in normal liver. The L-form of tumour enzyme was purified by DEAE cellulose-Sephadex G200 chromatography (Sp. activity 41 units/mg). MgADP?ADP2? of 201 gave optimum activity for both the intrinsic and F1,6di-P stimulated reactions. ATP did not inhibit the enzyme. Alanine (2.5 nM) caused 60% inhibition at low PEP concentrations (0.25 mM). The homotropic effector (PEP) exhibited a complex allosteric pattern and saturation kinetics were not observed for either the intrinsic or F1,6di-P stimulated reactions with PEP concentrations as high as 10 mM.  相似文献

Characterization of lamin proteins in BHK cells   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Lamins are structural proteins found in rat liver nuclear envelope and are major constituents of the nuclear matrix. 2-D gel electrophoresis indicates that BHK cell nuclear matrix is composed of four major proteins (62 kD, 68 kD, 70 kD and 72 kD). Three of these proteins are very similar to lamins A, B and C of rat liver nuclear envelope according to their molecular mass and isoelectric points. An anti-serum specific to BHK matrix proteins has been raised. On 2-D immunoblot, this serum detects all the 62, 68 and 72 kD polypeptide isovariants but only one of the two isovariants of the 70 kD polypeptide. Rat lamins A, B and C react with the anti-BHK matrix serum. However, when a monoclonal antibody to rat liver lamins A, B and C is used (Burke, B, Tooze, J & Warren, G, EMBO j 2 (1983) 361 [23]), only the 72 kD (lamin A-like) and the 62 kD (lamin C-like) BHK polypeptides are detected. Our results suggest that although a strong similarity exists between BHK and rat lamins, there is no identical cross-reactivity between the two species.  相似文献

The linkage pattern of the K6-antigen was investigated using material from the urinary pathogen, Escherichia coli LP 1092. The polysaccharide consists of ribose and 3-deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonate (KDO) in a ratio of 2:1. Colorimetric procedures, Smith degradation, methylation analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were applied to the whole polysaccharide and to a trisaccharide “repeating unit” obtained by mild-acid catalyzed hydrolysis. The quenching of fluorescence and inhibition of photochemical activities by m-dinitrobenzene have been studied in unicellular algae and chloroplasts.The complementary area S(=0(ΔφM?Δφ)dt) is decreased in the same fashion as the maximum amplitude of the variable fluorescence ΔφM, suggesting the invariance of S properly normalized by ΔφM. A photochemical type inhibition for all photochemical activities (oxygen evolution, Photoreaction II and I) is observed in a concentration range higher than that required to quench ΔφM. The ratio of the photochemical rate in limiting light to the O2 burst elicited by a flash is constant whatever the level of inhibition. The pattern of oscillation of O2 burst during a sequence of flashes is also unmodified, the amplitude only being decreased.In order to explain these results, it is assumed that dinitrobenzene (DNB) has a quenching effect both on the center-chlorophyll and the collector-chlorophyll of the System II photosynthetic units; when the external quencher is only acting on the collector, the trapping efficiency for the center is unmodified, but, when the center is turned into its inactive form by the photochemical reaction, the fluorescence of the collector is quenched. It is shown that the rule of invariance of the normalized complementary area applies to this type of quenching; accordingly, the zero level of the System II fluorescence, within the constant part, (cf. Lavorel, J. et Joliot, P. (1972) Biophys. J. 12, 815–831) should lie close to the 0 level (dark-adapted state).  相似文献

Group foragers may assess patch quality more efficiently bypaying attention to the sampling behavior of group members foragingin the same patch (i.e., using "public information"). To determinewhether red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) use public informationto aid their patch departure decisions, we conducted experimentsthat compared the sampling behavior of crossbills foraging ona two-patch system (one patch was always empty, one patch containingseeds) when alone, in pairs, and in flocks of three. When foragingalone, crossbills departed from empty patches in a way thatwas qualitatively consistent with energy maximization. We foundevidence for the use of public information when crossbills werepaired with two flock mates, but not when paired with one flockmate. When foraging with two flock mates, crossbills sampledapproximately half the number of cones on the empty patch beforedeparting as compared to when solitary. Furthermore, as expected ifpublic information is used, the variance in both the numberof cones and time spent on the empty patch decreased when crossbillsforaged with two flock mates as compared to when alone. Althoughhigh frequencies of scrounging reduce the availability of publicinformation, scrounging is usually uncommon in crossbills, apparentlybecause they exploit divisible patches. Consequently, publicinformation is likely to be important to crossbills in the wild.We also show that feeding performance is greatly diminishedwhen the feeding performances of flock mates differ. This providesa mechanism that will favor assortative grouping by phenotypewhen phenotypes affect feeding performance, which may in turnpromote speciation in some groups of animals.  相似文献

Three phosphorylated guanosine derivatives designated HS-1, HS-2 and HS-3 synthesised during active protein synthesis in the water-mould, Achlya sp (1969) were shown to regulate the enzymatic activities of nucleoplasmic and nucleolar DNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RNAP-I, II and III) from both Achlya and another unrelated water-mould, Blastocladiella emersonii. These HS compounds were without effect on E. coli DNA-dependent RNA polymerase holoenzyme. The most potent of the three compounds was HS-3 which inhibited the activity of all enzymes completely at 100 μg/ml. HS-1, on the other hand, activated maximally at 1 to 10 μg/ml. HS-1 activation (3-fold) was restricted to enzyme III, and it had only partial inhibitory effects on enzymes I and II. The pattern of synthesis of HS-compounds throughout the 20-hour asexual growth cycle of the organism correlated with the detectable levels of the different RNA polymerases of Achlya.  相似文献

Isolated porcine Graafian follicles which were explanted in vitro and maintained in organ culture were used as a test-system for the meiosis-inducing action of PMSG and hCG. The addition of either PMSG or hCG alone (10 or 20 IU/ml, respectively) to the culture medium was not effective, whereas the simultaneous administration of these hormones (1515IU/ml) induced resumption of meiosis in 90.3% (3741). The same hormone concentrations were used in a second series of experiments in which the inhibition and induction of meiosis of isolated oocytes were tested by transferring them into host follicles. In host follicles containing up to 12 foreign eggs, which were cultured in control media, meiosis was prevented in 86.0% of all oocytes (104121). By adding PMSG (15 IU/ml) simultaneously with hCG (15 IU/ml) to the medium, meiosis was induced in 95.0% of all oocytes (133140).The assumption is made that the signal initiating resumption of meiosis of the isolated and transferred oocytes is mediated by the follicular fluid, since intimate contact with the membrana granulosa of the host follicle was prevented by using a roller technique.  相似文献

The kinetics of the fluorescence yield Ф of chlorophyll a in Chlorella pyrenoidosa were studied under anaerobic conditions in the time range from 50 μs to several minutes after short (t12 = 30 ns or 5 μs) saturating flashes. The fluorescence yield “in the dark” increased from Ф = 1 at the beginning to Ф ≈ 5 in about 3 h when single flashes separated by dark intervals of about 3 min were given.After one saturating flash, Ф increased to a maximum value (4–5) at 50 μs, then Ф decreased to about 3 with a half time of about 10 ms and to the initial value with a half time of about 2 s. When two flashes separated by 0.2 s were given, the first phase of the decrease after the second flash occurred within 2 ms. After one flash given at high initial fluorescence yield, the 10-ms decay was followed by a 10 s increase to the initial value. After the two flashes 0.2 s apart, the rapid decay was not follewed by a slow increase.These and other experiments provided additional evidence for and extend an earlier hypothesis concerning the acceptor complex of Photosystem II (Bouges-Bocquet, B. (1973) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 314, 250–256; Velthuys, B. R. and Amesz, J. (1974) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 333, 85–94): reaction center 2 contains an acceptor complex QR consisting of an electron-transferring primary acceptor molecule Q, and a secondary electron acceptor R, which can accept two electrons in succession, but transfers two electrons simultaneously to a molecule of the tertiary acceptor pool, containing plastoquinone (A). Furthermore, the kinetics indicate that 2 reactions centers of System I, excited by a short flash, cooperate directly or indirectly in oxidizing a plastohydroquinone molecule (A2?). If initially all components between photoreaction 1 and 2 are in the reduced state the following sequence of reactions occurs after a flash has oxidised A2? via System I: Q?R2? + A → Q?R + A2? → QR? + A2?. During anaerobiosis two slow reactions manifest themselves: the reduction of R (and A) within 1 s, presumably by an endogenous electron donor D1, and the reduction of Q in about 10 s when R is in the state R? and A in the state A2?. An endogenous electron donor, D2, and Q? compete in reducing the photooxidized donor complex of System II in reactions with half times of the order of 1 s.  相似文献

Chemically synthesized 1-O-hexadecyl-2-O-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine possessed the most potent hypotensive activity compared with bradykinin, prostagrandin E2 and I2 when 5 nano moles/kg body weight of each drug were administered intravenously in spontaneously hypertensive rat. The potency and the duration of hypotensive activity of 1-O-hexadecyl-2-O-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine were dose dependent. Exogenous norepinephrine or angiotensin II showed pressor activity during the hypotensive action of 1-O-hexadecyl-2-O-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, but did not disturb the hypotensive pattern of this ether lipid. These may suggest that 1-O-alkyl-2-O-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine plays an important role for the regulation of blood pressure.  相似文献

The conversion of synthetic somatostatin-28 (S-28) to somatostatin- 14 (S-14, SRIF) by subcellular fractions of rat hypothalamus has been investigated. The conversion products were identified by two techniques: (1) two separate RIAs using antibodies directed toward the central (RIA R149) or the N- terminal (RIA S39) region of the S-14 molecule, (2) gel chromatography of the reaction mixture followed by analysis of the column fractions by RIA R149. Maximal S-28 to S-14 converting activity was observed with the particulate fraction of the lysed synaptosomal pellet sedimenting at the density interface 8–16% Ficoll in 0.32 M sucrose in a discontinuous sucrose/ Ficoll gradient. Concomitant with conversion, degradation of total somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) was also observed with this fraction (t12 ~ 24 min). Relatively little converting activity was found in the remaining subcellular fractions. These data suggest that hypothalamic synaptosomes contain membrane bound enzymes which are able to catalyze the conversion of S-28 to S-14. Tissue specific differences in this converting activity may account for the reported variability in the S-28:S-14 ratios in different tissues.  相似文献

The turnover of acetylcholine receptors labeled with 125I-labeled α-bungarotoxin was measured in the developing posterior latissimus dorsi muscle of the chick. The degradation rates for acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction and in extrajunctional regions of the muscle cell were determined. One week after hatching, the rates of junctional and extrajunctional receptor degradation are identical (t12 = 30 hr). Three weeks weeks after hatching, however, the rate of junctional receptor degradation is considerably slower (t12 ≥ 5 days) and different than the rate of extrajunctional receptor degradation (t12 = 30 hr). Thus, receptors which are localized at the neuromuscular junction early in embryonic life only become stable several weeks after hatching.  相似文献
