In an examination of 1352 whiting 0–5+ years old from Manx waters it was found that the digeneans Hemiurus communis Odhner and Derogenes varicus Müller were restricted to the stomach. Stephenostomum pristis Looss, Podocotyle atomon Rudolphi and Leci-thaster gibbosus Rudolphi were most commonly found in the anterior intestine and caeca of mature fish but were found more posteriorly along the intestine of young whiting. The metacercaria of Cryptocoty lingua Creplin were found predominantly in the skin above the lateral line. The fins contained fewer cysts than expected from the area available. Plerocercoids of Grillotia erinaceus Van Beneden mainly infested the musculature of the pyloric stomach and those in the perivisceral cavity were concentrated in the extreme posterior corner. Unencapsulated forms of the nematode Contracaecum clavatum Rudolphi were commonest in the anterior intestine and stomach. Encapsulated forms were most abundant in the liver. The acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Rudolphi was usually found in the posterior intestine and its presence further restricted Contracaecum to the anterior intestine. In young whiting over two-thirds of the copepod Clavella uncinata Müller were attached to the operculum and posterior rim but in older whiting the majority were attached to the gill rakers. The first gill arch was the most heavily infested and the middle region of the gill arches contained most parasites. The frequency distributions of most of the helminths described more or less a negative binomial distribution. The frequency distribution of Contracaecum did not conform to either a negative binomial or a Poisson distribution.  相似文献

The occurrence of 12 helminth and 4 crustacean parasites on young whiting 0–2 years old from an inshore (Port Erin Bay) and an offshore (off Bradda Head) area of the Isle of Man were compared. No parasites were found on whiting 4.5–15 mm long and the intestinal digenean Lecithaster gibbosus Rudolphi together with the larvae of the copepod Caligus rapax M. Edwards were the first parasites to appear in whiting 15–42 mm long. This appears to be the only time during the life history of the whiting that C. rapax is of importance as a parasite. In whiting 6 months-2 years old from off Bradda Head such helminths as the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Muller and the digeneans Podocotyle atomon Muller and Cryptocotyle lingua Creplin (metacercariae) were found in significantly fewer fish than in an equivalent group from Port Erin Bay. The differences are correlated with the availability of intermediate hosts and the different food spectra of the two groups of fish and are used to support the theory that inshore and offshore whiting of these age groups form separate populations and that the offshore fish may be more important than the inshore fish in replenishing stocks of older whiting.  相似文献

Discriminant function analyses of infection parameters of parasitic helminths revealed that abundances of seven helminth species contributed significantly to the delineation of four host populations of winter flounder Pleuronectes americanus from the central and south‐west Scotian Shelf and the north‐east Gulf of Maine (NAFO subdivision 4WX‐5Z). These were adult digeneans, Derogenes varicus , Genolinea laticauda , Steganoderma formosum and Steringophorus furciger , metacercariae of the digenean, Stephanostomum baccatum , and larval nematodes, Anisakis simplex and Hysterothylacium aduncum . The correct classification rate was 84% overall, with Georges Bank (5Z) and Sable Island Bank (4W) winter flounder being the most accurately classified samples at 98 and 88%, respectively. Winter flounder from south‐west Nova Scotia (4X), an inshore sample from St Marys Bay and offshore fish from Browns Bank, had the lowest rates of correct classification (76 and 71%, respectively) due, primarily, to cross‐misclassification between the two samples. Winter pairwise comparisons of four microsatellite markers identified significant genetic differences between all populations sampled with the Georges Bank population being the most genetically distinct overall, and St Marys Bay and Browns Bank fish being the least dissimilar.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the levels of copepod ectoparasitic infections from Merlangius merlangus and Platichthys flesus were examined and related to the annual migrations of young fish into an estuary. Lernaeocera branchialis (L.) was the only parasite common to both fish species; its life-cycle stages infected the branchial chambers of 96·7% flounders ( P. flesus ) and 40·4% whiting ( M. merlangus ). Infection in the two fish species exhibited similar seasonal fluctuations and a temporal relationship between the parasite's occurrence on its two hosts was apparent. Whiting were also parasitized by Clavella uncinata (Milller); 26·9 % fish were affected. The copepods' distribution was highly localized with the majority restricted to the long gill rakers of the first gill arch. Infection was related to size of whiting up to 12·5 cm; there was little increase beyond this length. In addition to L. branchialis , flounder was also host to Acanthochondria depressa (T. Scott) and Lepeophtheirus pectoralis (Müller). A. depressa showed a preference for the ocular side of the body with its developing stages attached mainly to the second gill arch and the adults located in the posterior pocket of the branchial chamber. L. pectoralis was associated with the paired fins. Factors which could result in such localized distributions are discussed.  相似文献

In an examination of 1352 whiting from the Irish Sea 13 helminth species were discovered. One species, Scolex polymorphus Rudolphi, was a new species associated with whiting and 7 other species were new species for whiting from the Northern Irish Sea. The species of the digenean genus Podocotyle found in whiting is probably an ecotype of P. atomon. It was concluded that the bothridial structure of 5. polymorphus cannot be used for diagnostic purposes nor to determine early and late stages of the larvae. The number of Diclidophora merlangi Kuhn (Monogenea) from each monthly sample with eggs in the uterus is directly proportional to temperature, but egg production under experimental conditions was greatest at 6° C. Several theories are proposed to explain these apparently contradictory observations. The life-history of the digenean Stephanostomum pristis Looss, appears to be unusual in that the 2nd intermediate host may be planktonic. The nematode Contra caecum clavatum Rudolphi is found both as larvae and adults but larvae comprise the greater part of the worm population. The discovery of small stage II larvae in the stomach of whiting supports the theory that only one intermediate host is necessary for the development of Contmcaecum . There were significantly more female C. clavatum than male but a 1: 1 sex ratio is demonstrated by the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Muller. Early and late forms of the plerocercoid of Grillotia erinaceus Van Beneden are identified. The early form occurred predominantly in the young whiting.  相似文献

The helminth parasites present in 412 lesser sandeels (Ammodytes tobianus) taken from June 1996 to May 1997 from the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland were examined. Ten helminth parasite species were recorded, and more than 92% of the sandeels were infected with at least 1 helminth species. Seven of the species were digeneans, including Brachyphallus crenatus, Hemiurus communis, Derogenes varicus, Lecithaster gibbosus, Opechona bacillaris, Cryptocotyle lingua, and Galactosomum lacteum; 2 nematodes, including Hysterothylacium sp. and Contracaecum sp.; and 1 cestode, Scolex pleuronectis. Three of the 7 digenean species were either larvae or immature. Only 2 species, the digeneans G. lacteum and H. communis, had prevalences greater than 50%. The dominant species was G. lacteum, accounting for 67% of all parasites present. The relationship between spawned groups, host length, and season versus the abundance, prevalence, species richness, and the total number of parasites in the infracommunities was investigated. No difference was found between the parasite communities of the 2 spawning races of the host population. Mean abundance and prevalence of the different parasite species showed seasonal variation. Numbers of parasite species and numbers of parasites increased with fish length. The role of A. tobianus as an intermediate host for helminths was assessed; it was determined that most were infectious to birds or mammals, with the majority of the parasite species being autogenic (infectious to fish). The mean number of parasites per fish was nearly a quarter of the value recorded for A. tobianus in the North Sea, where a much higher intensity of infection was recorded.  相似文献

A list of fish parasites (Digenea) from the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica) concerns 10 identified species, namely Macvicaria pennelli, Neolebouria terranovaensis, Helicometra pisanoae, Lepidapedon balgueriasi, L. garradi, Genolinea bowersi, Derogenes johnstoni, Gonocerca phycidis, Elytrophalloides oatesi, Lecithaster macrocotyle, 1 genus Aporocotyle sp. and one specimen undetermined. The total number of species known from the Ross Sea increased from 9 to 12. This number is smaller than those of other Antarctic areas, such as Western Antarctic and Weddell Sea where more extensive investigations were carried out to date.  相似文献

The metazoan parasite fauna of 50 specimens of Boreogadus saida (Lepechin) (Gadidae) from eastern Greenland is very similar to those of previous studies of the parasite fauna of B. saida from Greenland, eastern Canada, Alaska and the Russian Arctic. The digeneans Hemiurus levinseni, Derogenes varicus and Lecithaster gibbosus and cestode larvae were found at most stations. Single specimens of the nematode larvae Anisakis simplex were found at four stations. A comparison of the distribution of the larvae of Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. is difficult due to a possible confusion of the two genera. Most of the metazoan parasites of B. saida are generalist species found in several fish families. Boreogadus saida acquires most of its endoparasites by eating pelagic crustaceans, mainly copepods and amphipods. It plays an important role in the arctic ecosystem and its parasites are transferred to predatory fish, birds and mammals through the food web.  相似文献

The parasite communities of Nezumia pulchella across its geographical range in the south-eastern Pacific were described, from 217 fish captured from four localities in northern and central Chile (24° S to 33° S). Five ectoparasites and 13 endoparasites were recorded and the highest prevalence and intensity of infection was found for the copepods Jusheyhoea macrura and Clavella sp. 1, for the monogenean Diclidophora sp. and for the larval acanthocephalan Corynosoma australe . Parasite species richness decreased with latitude. Multivariate discriminant analysis and correspondence analysis supported the use of parasites of N. pulchella to discriminate populations of this host, suggesting the existence of three well-defined host populations in the geographical range examined. Jusheyhoea macrura , C. australe , Lophoura sp., Diclidophora sp., Capillaria sp. and Proleptus sp. were the most important species for discriminant analysis.  相似文献

From the examination of samples of fish caught in two commercial surveys on trawling grounds around the Falkland Islands, it is noted that Patagonian hake, Merluccius hubbsi , southern blue whiting, Micromesistius australis , and others occurred in fishable quantities especially to the east of Beauchêne Islands where fishes were larger and more numerous. However 47% of the total catch consisted of southern blue whiting which was 100% infested by a myxosporidian parasite in its musculature rendering it unsuitable for human consumption.  相似文献

A total of 301 blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou Risso, 1826, ranging in length from 17 to 28 cm, from Motril Bay (Mediterranean coast, south Spain) were examined for anisakid nematodes, as these fish are common items in the Spanish Mediterranean diet. Three anisakid species were morphologically identified with a total prevalence of 10.63%. Anisakis simplex s.l. Rudolphi, 1809 had a prevalence value of 6.65%, compared with 2.66% for A. physeteris Baylis, 1923 and 2.33% for Hysterothylacium aduncum Rudolphi, 1802. Variations in prevalence values with season and host size are discussed. Allozyme markers (leucine aminopeptidase-1) were used to identify anisakid nematodes assigned to the A. simplex complex and all examined larvae were found to correspond genetically to A. pegreffii Nascetti et al., 1986.  相似文献

Five species of digeneans parasitic in the pilchard Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum), a little studied host, from off the Algerian coast of the western Mediterranean are redescribed. These are Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) Manter, 1940, Aphanurus stossichii (Monticelli, 1891) Looss, 1907, Aphanurus virgula Looss, 1907, Lecithaster confusus Odhner, 1905 and Pronoprymna ventricosa (Rudolphi, 1819) Poche, 1926. One of these, A. virgula, is a new record for this host. One other digenean, Hemiurus luehei Odhner, 1905, was also recorded from this host. A complete checklist of the helminth parasites of S. pilchardus throughout its distributional range, comprising 104 host-parasite records of 39 taxa, is presented.  相似文献

1. Tachykinin immunoreactivity has been quantified and chemically characterised in extracts of the monogenean parasite, Diclidophora merlangi and its fish host, Merlangius merlangus, by means of four tachykinin radioimmunoassays interfaced with gel permeation chromatography and reverse-phase HPLC. 2. Of the two tachykinins identified in parasite tissue, one was SP-like and the other was NKA-like, although neither was identical to previously identified tachykinins. 3. Three tachykinins were identified in extracts of whiting GI tract, one of which was a neuropeptide and also occurred in whiting brain. 4. The parasite and fish tachykinins had different molecular weights and elution profiles in HPLC analyses, and were therefore chemically distinct.  相似文献

The communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant predictor of abundance of any helminth species, and host length was only weakly and positively related to the abundance of A. simplex. Infracommunities were species-poor, with 56% of fish harbouring only one parasite species, and 92% up to two species. Infracommunities were strongly dominated by A. simplex (389 fish) or S. lophii (6 fish). Fish length or gender, and the year of capture, did not affect species richness nor the degree of dominance. There were no significant pair-wise associations between species. Infracommunities were basically composed of several allogenic parasites with different life histories that converge in the blue whiting through the local food web. The parasite fauna of blue whiting in the study area was poor and distinctive compared with that of other localities in the north-east North Atlantic. These peculiarities might primarily be related to the composition of the local community of definitive hosts, although there might also be some influence of the geographical distribution of parasites.  相似文献

Whiting entering estuarine waters during autumn are largely free from the copepod Lernaeocera branchialis (L.). Infection soon follows and, between 1973 and 1975, an average 40.4% whiting were infected. The parasite's effects on fish weight over this period are assessed and, in a separate study, its effects on the host's lipid biochemistry determined. Mature adults of L. branchialis caused a significant reduction in body weight. Liver lipid content was also lower in these individuals, by more than 50%. Phospholipid levels were lower but cholesterol readings were greater in infected fish. Fatty acid composition of liver lipids appeared unaffected.  相似文献

The seasonal and interannual variability in abundance of Calanusfinmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicus in the Irish Sea wasexamined on the west side of the Isle of Man (central IrishSea) between 1995 and 2001. There was considerable interannualvariability in abundance of both species that was greater thanthat seen in adjacent seas. In general, maximum abundance occurredbetween May and July each year with C. finmarchicus tendingto occur earlier in the year than C. helgolandicus. There wasa significant difference in interannual maximum abundances inthe area (14–18 stations treated as replicates) with mostyears having a low abundance and one year a relatively highabundance. The maximum abundance of C. finmarchicus (1996) coincidedwith a low (negative) index value of the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO), and with a high abundance of young gadoids (cod, haddockand whiting) in the water column and a large settlement of plaice.A high abundance of C. helgolandicus coincided with a relativelyhigh (positive) index value of the NAO in 2000. The magnitudeof interannual and seasonal variability in abundance was inclose agreement with data from an inshore area (Port Erin Bay,Isle of Man) between 1907 and 1920. As with many Calanus populations, the adults in both species were predominantly female. As shownpreviously, Calanus is not one of the numerically dominant copepodspecies in the Irish Sea. However, the presence of young stagesof Calanus within the central Irish Sea suggests that it mustsupport a breeding population.  相似文献

Quantitative population dynamical information derived from laboratory- and field-based experiments is provided for the fish-parasitic copepod, Lernaeocera branchialis, infecting flounder (Platichthys flesus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus). Adult, post-metamorphosis females from whiting can produce more than one set of egg-strings. The mean number of eggs in each egg-string pair was 1445. At 10 °C these eggs took about 12.7 d after extrusion before hatching of NI nauplii began. Hatching took up to 12 days to be completed with an exponentially declining pattern of output over this period. In the laboratory about 44% of the egg-string egg population successfully passed through the NI to NII nauplius moult and the NII to copepodid moult to produce infective copepodids, a process lasting about 2 d. The non-feeding copepodids had a maximum survival time at 10 °C of 18 d, with a time to 50% survival of 7.5 d. In laboratory infection experiments at 10 °C, copepodids infected flounder and passed through all their developmental stages to adulthood and copulation in a minimum of 25 d. Field experiments on the seabed off Lowestoft in June 1987 with a sea temperature of about 16 °C suggested that the developmental period in those conditions could be as short as 11 d. Previously uninfected flounder in the field experiments became naturally infected with copepodids at a mean rate of not less than 30 parasites per fish d–1.  相似文献

At the beginning of May 1982, a westerly gale destroyed or damaged 49% of 761 Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis nests on the exposed west side of the Isle of May, southeast Scotland; 518 nests on the sheltered east side acted as controls against which to assess subsequent effects of the gale on Shag reproduction and recruitment.
On sites affected by the gale, 90% of pairs rebuilt their nest and laid a second clutch, on average 18 days after the loss of the first one. First-time breeders nested closer to the sea, suffered greater damage to their nests, and deserted their damaged nests more readily after the gale than did experienced ones; a quarter of potential recruits to the west side were deterred from breeding in that year.
By the end of the season, the number of chicks fledged per pair was 31% lower on the west side than on the east. The difference was caused partly by nest desertion, partly by greater hatching failure of full clutches in apparently undamaged nests and especially by lower fledging success of pairs that renested. Irrespective of breeding experience, delayed early breeders produced more chicks than late breeders nesting at the same time, showing that late breeders were of poorer intrinsic quality than early breeders. This was one reason for a seasonal decline in Shag productivity, although environmental factors also played a role.
During April-July, gales like that of May 1982 occur on average once every 5 years on the Isle of May. Despite the disruption that they may cause to nesting Shags, the impact on the long-term growth of the colony is small.  相似文献

Until recently, sewage from Morecambe was macerated, but otherwise untreated, and discharged at high water via a short outfall pipe into Morecambe Bay adjacent to a recognized bathing water. In March 1997, a new biological sewage treatment plant came on-line and the effluent was discharged via a longer outfall pipe into the Bay south of Heysham. The effect of the new sewage treatment on the quality of the bathing waters was monitored by testing sea water collected from the three EU designated bathing waters on Morecambe Bay: Morecambe North, Morecambe South and Heysham. After sewage treatment came on-line, the numbers of faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci were lower at Morecambe North and Morecambe South but higher at Heysham. Although the changes in numbers were not always statistically significant, they were sufficient to affect compliance with the EU Bathing Water Directive Imperative (mandatory) standards. Compliance improved markedly at Morecambe North and South but declined at Heysham, the closest bathing site to the new outfall. Numbers of thermophilic campylobacters were similar in both years, which is suggestive of their sources being different from those of the indicator bacteria. Campylobacter lari and urease-positive thermophilic campylobacters (UPTC) were the only species of Campylobacter isolated from Morecambe's bathing waters. Very low numbers of Salmonella were found, with Salm, arizonae the only species isolated.  相似文献
