Short syntheses of cuniloside B and cypellocarpin C, (+)-(R)-oleuropeic acid-containing carbohydrates, are reported. Also disclosed are syntheses of the noreugenin glycosides, undulatoside A and corymbosins K1 and K2. Leaf extracts of 28 diverse eucalypts revealed cuniloside B to be present in all, and cypellocarpin C to be present in most, of the species examined. The widespread occurrence of these carbohydrate monoterpenoid esters supports their roles in essential oil biosynthesis or mobilization from sites of synthesis to secretory cavity lumena.  相似文献

Evidence for the widespread occurrence of ancient forests on cliffs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Aim The objective of this work was to determine if the existence of ancient forests on cliffs was specific to the Niagara Escarpment, Canada, or part of a globally widespread pattern. Location Sixty‐five cliff sites were visited in five countries in the temperate climatic zone, and trees were sampled for age and growth rate on forty‐six of these. Methods Two hundred and twenty‐four core samples or cross‐sections were taken from trees on cliffs that varied in height, aspect, rock‐type, and exposure. General observations were also made of regeneration of the tree species forming the mature canopy, and other habitat conditions. Results The evidence shows that ancient slow‐growing forest occurs on most cliffs. Age and growth rate distributions were similar at all treed sites. Small‐statured Thuja, Juniperus, or Taxus stems with age estimates in excess of 1000 years were found in the United States, the United Kingdom and France, and small Pinus and Quercus stems nearly 400 years in Germany. There was a high rate of recurrence of plants in the genera Polypodium, Asplenium, Cystopteris, Campanula, Rosa, Prunus, Hedera, and Sorbus. Most of the sites appear to be habitats of completely natural origin. Conclusions We conclude that ancient natural forest is a normal feature of cliffs, at least in the temperate zone.  相似文献

Neogene planktonic foraminifera are among the most widely used microfossils in the study of tempo and mode of evolution. Comparisons of taxonomic rates between the two major clades in this group have shown that the nonspinose globorotaliids have undergone a significantly more rapid evolutionary turnover than the spinose globigerinids (S. M. Stanleyet al., 1988,Paleobiology14, 235–249). In order to test if similar fluctuations are observed in molecular data, we have used different methods to calculate absolute and relative rates of substitutions based on 16 partial SSU rDNA sequences from representatives of both groups. According to our data, rates of substitution are relatively constant within the globigerinids with a mean value of 4.3 subst./site/109years, but vary in the globorotaliid clade with three species having a rate of about 1 subst./site/109years and two species evolving much faster with rates of more than 7 subst./site/109years. Assuming that the fast rates result from recent accelerations, the globorotaliids have basically much slower molecular evolutionary rates than the globigerinids, in opposition to the fossil data.  相似文献

Two hundred and twelve strains representing 11 species of fluorescent pseudomonads along with an additional 198 strains isolated from the leaf and root surfaces of plants were tested for rutin glycosidase, on a mineral base medium supplemented with rutin and glucose. AH of the arginine dihydrolase negative phytopathogens (182 strains) with the exception of 12 of 12 strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycina and one of 28 strains of P. syringae pv. phaseoticola showed rutin glycosidase activity whereas few of the arginine dihydrolase positive strains (22 of 228) were positive.  相似文献

The Baas-Becking's hypothesis, also known by the term 'everything is everywhere' (EisE), states that microscopic organisms such as bacteria and protists are globally distributed and do not show biogeographical patterns, due to their high dispersal potential. We tested the prediction of the EisE hypothesis on bdelloid rotifers, microscopic animals similar to protists in size and ecology that present one of the best cases among animals for the plausibility of global dispersal. Geographical range sizes and patterns of isolation by distance were estimated for global collections of the genera Adineta and Rotaria, using different taxonomic units: (i) traditional species based on morphology, (ii) the most inclusive monophyletic lineages from a cytochrome oxidase I phylogeny comprising just a single traditional species, and (iii) genetic clusters indicative of independently evolving lineages. Although there are cases of truly cosmopolitan distribution, even at the most finely resolved taxonomic level, most genetic clusters are distributed at continental or lower scales. Nevertheless, although 'everything is not everywhere', bdelloid rotifers do display broad distributions typical of those of other microscopic organisms. Broad dispersal and large population sizes might be factors lessening the evolutionary cost of long-term abstinence from sexual reproduction in this famous group of obligate parthenogens.  相似文献

Summary Single membrane bounded organelles characterized by a physical association with endoplasmic reticulum have been observed in a wide range of cell types and plant species including Gymnosperm, Angiosperm, Pteridophyte, and Thallophyte (algae and fungi) tissues. The morphological similarity between these organelles and animal microbodies suggests that they are cytological homologues. Plant microbodies were observed both with and without dense internal inclusions but unlike animal microbodies could not be shown to contain uricase. Plant microbody membranes are resistant to degenerative influences and remain associated with a small portion of endoplasmic reticulum even in isolated cell fractions.  相似文献

Ubiquitin is a 76 amino acid protein with a remarkable degree of evolutionary conservation. Ubiquitin plays an essential role in a large number of eukaryotic cellular processes by targeting proteins for proteasome-mediated degradation. Most ubiquitin genes are found as head-to-tail polymers whose products are posttranslationally processed to ubiquitin monomers. We have characterized polyubuiquitin genes from the photosynthetic amoeboflagellate Chlorarachnion sp. CCMP 621 (also known as Bigelowiella natans) and found that they deviate from the canonical polyubiquitin structure in having an amino acid insertion at the junction between each monomer, suggesting that polyubiquitin processing in this organism is unique among eukaryotes. The gene structure indicates that processing likely cleaves monomers at the amino terminus of the insertion. We examined the phylogenetic distribution of the insertion by sequencing polyubiquitin genes from several other eukaryotic groups and found it to be confined to Cercozoa (including Chlorarachnion, Lotharella, Cercomonas, and Euglypha) and Foraminifera (including Reticulomyxa and Haynesina). This character strongly suggests that Cercozoa and Foraminifera are close relatives and form a new "supergroup" of eukaryotes.  相似文献

The occurrence of non-native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in multiple river systems in Ireland in 2017 was unprecedented and reflected similar concurrent events observed in other countries in the North Atlantic region. Thirty-six fish were captured in a total of 11 river systems located in the south-west, west and north-west of Ireland in the period June to September 2017. The biological characteristics of sampled specimens are described and the potential for establishment in Ireland are considered.  相似文献

Bioluminescence has been reported to occur in 17 phyla and at least 700 genera. However, the luciferin chemistry of the majority of luminous organisms has yet to be determined. The most common chemistry which is known to occur in deep sea bioluminescence is imidazolopyrazine bioluminescence. The main aim of this study was to examine the phyletic and tissue distribution of imidazolopyrazine luciferins. This will facilitate analysis of imidazolopyrazine bioluminescence at the cellular and molecular levels and, in particular, how and when its chemistry is controlled and expressed in vivo. Assays for both known imidazolopyrazines were established and a range of fresh organisms and tissue were analysed, i.e. fish, cephalopods, copepods, ostracods, amphipods and euphausiids. The main findings were that the number of genera in which coelenterazine has been detected has been increased from 52 to about 90. Also, for the first time, the other known imidazolopyrazine luciferin,Vargula-type luciferin, was quantified in the ostracod Cypridina dentata, but was not detected in any of its potential predators. Neither imidazolopyrazine luciferin was found in several luminous stomiiform fish assayed. Coelenterazine was measured in the livers and photophores of a number of cephalopods and it is apparent that coelenterazine is responsible for both modes of luminescence. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Fungal mitospores may function as dispersal units and/ or spermatia and thus play a role in distribution and/or mating of species that produce them. Mitospore production in ectomycorrhizal (EcM) Pezizales is rarely reported, but here we document mitospore production by a high diversity of EcM Pezizales on three continents, in both hemispheres. We sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and partial large subunit (LSU) nuclear rDNA from 292 spore mats (visible mitospore clumps) collected in Argentina, Chile, China, Mexico and the USA between 2009 and 2012. We collated spore mat ITS sequences with 105 fruit body and 47 EcM root sequences to generate operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Phylogenetic inferences were made through analyses of both molecular data sets. A total of 48 OTUs from spore mats represented six independent EcM Pezizales lineages and included truffles and cup fungi. Three clades of seven OTUs have no known meiospore stage. Mitospores failed to germinate on sterile media, or form ectomycorrhizas on Quercus, Pinus and Populus seedlings, consistent with a hypothesized role of spermatia. The broad geographic range, high frequency and phylogenetic diversity of spore mats produced by EcM Pezizales suggests that a mitospore stage is important for many species in this group in terms of mating, reproduction and/or dispersal.  相似文献

The Mediterranean Sea is considered as one of the hotspots of marine bioinvasions, largely due to the influx of tropical species migrating through the Suez Canal, so-called Lessepsian migrants. Several cases of Lessepsian migration have been documented recently, however, little is known about the ecological characteristics of the migrating species and their aptitude to colonize the new areas. This study focused on Red Sea soritids, larger symbiont-bearing benthic foraminifera (LBF) that are indicative of tropical and subtropical environments and were recently found in the Israeli coast of the Eastern Mediterranean. We combined molecular phylogenetic analyses of soritids and their algal symbionts as well as network analysis of Sorites orbiculus Forskål to compare populations from the Gulf of Elat (northern Red Sea) and from a known hotspot in Shikmona (northern Israel) that consists of a single population of S. orbiculus. Our phylogenetic analyses show that all specimens found in Shikmona are genetically identical to a population of S. orbiculus living on a similar shallow water pebbles habitat in the Gulf of Elat. Our analyses also show that the symbionts found in Shikmona and Elat soritids belong to the Symbiodinium clade F5, which is common in the Red Sea and also present in the Indian Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Our study therefore provides the first genetic and ecological evidences that indicate that modern population of soritids found on the Mediterranean coast of Israel is probably Lessepsian, and is less likely the descendant of a native ancient Mediterranean species.  相似文献

The recently described polyploid Saxifraga svalbardensis is endemic to the arctic archipelago of Svalbard. We investigated relationships among four closely related species of Saxifraga in Svalbard and tested three previously proposed hypotheses for the origin of S. svalbardensis: (1) differentiation from the morphologically and chromosomally variable polyploid S. cernua; (2) hybridization between the diploid S. hyperborea and S. cernua; and (3) hybridization between the tetraploid S. rivularis and S. cernua. Fifteen populations were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) and nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast gene matK and the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). RAPD and matK data suggest that S. svalbardensis has originated from a hybrid with S. rivularis as the maternal parent and S. cernua as the paternal parent, possibly a single time, whereas ITS data could not be used to discriminate among the hypotheses. The data also suggest that the diploid S. hyperborea is a progenitor of the tetraploid S. rivularis. The four populations examined of S. svalbardensis were virtually identical for RAPD and ITS markers, whereas S. cernua showed high levels of variation, suggesting that the latter polyploid either has formed recurrently or has undergone considerable differentiation since its origin.  相似文献

The use of planktonic foraminifera in paleoceanography requires taxonomic consistency and precise assessment of the species biogeography. Yet, ribosomal small subunit (SSUr) DNA analyses have revealed that most of the modern morpho-species of planktonic foraminifera are composed of a complex of several distinct genetic types that may correspond to cryptic or pseudo-cryptic species. These genetic types are usually delimitated using partial sequences located at the 3′end of the SSUrDNA, but typically based on empirical delimitation. Here, we first use patristic genetic distances calculated within and among genetic types of the most common morpho-species to show that intra-type and inter-type genetic distances within morpho-species may significantly overlap, suggesting that genetic types have been sometimes inconsistently defined. We further apply two quantitative and independent methods, ABGD (Automatic Barcode Gap Detection) and GMYC (General Mixed Yule Coalescent) to a dataset of published and newly obtained partial SSU rDNA for a more objective assessment of the species status of these genetic types. Results of these complementary approaches are highly congruent and lead to a molecular taxonomy that ranks 49 genetic types of planktonic foraminifera as genuine (pseudo)cryptic species. Our results advocate for a standardized sequencing procedure allowing homogenous delimitations of (pseudo)cryptic species. On the ground of this revised taxonomic framework, we finally provide an integrative taxonomy synthesizing geographic, ecological and morphological differentiations that can occur among the genuine (pseudo)cryptic species. Due to molecular, environmental or morphological data scarcities, many aspects of our proposed integrative taxonomy are not yet fully resolved. On the other hand, our study opens up the potential for a correct interpretation of environmental sequence datasets.  相似文献

Pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS) and DNA fingerprinting (RAPD and RSα hybridization) were used to characterize soybean inoculant strains and root nodule isolates of bradyrhizobia from the Brazilian Cerrado soils. Most isolates were shown to be derived from the inoculant strains on the basis of genotype comparisons by DNA fingerprinting. Phenotypic analysis (using PyMS) of the strains and separately of the polysaccharides derived from them showed that the nodule isolates differed from the parental strains, suggesting adaptation to the Cerrado soil environment. The extent of the differences between the derivatives and inoculant strains was similar for comparisons made on the basis of whole-cell preparations or from the isolated polysaccharides, indicating that the adaptation was caused by changes in the composition of the polysaccharides produced.  相似文献

Ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases (RHDs) are of central importance to bacterial recycling of aromatic hydrocarbons, including anthropogenic pollutants. The database of presently characterized RHDs is biased towards those from organisms readily isolated on anthropogenic substrates. To investigate the extent to which RHDs from extant organisms reflect the natural diversity of these enzymes, we developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for retrieval of RHD gene fragments from environmental samples. Gene libraries from two contaminated and two pristine soil samples were constructed. None of the inferred peptides from clones examined were identical to previously described RHDs; however, all showed significant sequence homology and contained key catalytic residues. On the basis of sequence identity, the environmental clones clustered into six distinct groups, only one of which included known RHDs. One of the new sequence groupings was particularly widespread, being recovered from all soil samples tested. Comparison of inferred peptide sequences of the environmental clones and known RHDs showed the former to have greater sequence variation at sites thought to influence accessibility of the active site than that seen between currently known RHDs. We conclude that presently characterized RHDs do not adequately represent the diversity of function found in in situ forms.  相似文献

Laboratory and field studies have indicated that anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an important process in the marine nitrogen cycle. In this study 11 additional anoxic marine sediment and water column samples were studied to substantiate this claim. In a combined approach using the molecular methods, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), qualitative and quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), as well as (15)N stable isotope activity measurements, it was shown that anammox bacteria were present and active in all samples investigated. The anammox activity measured in the sediment samples ranged from 0.08 fmol cell(-1) day(-1) N(2) in the Golfo Dulce (Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica) sediment to 0.98 fmol cell(-1) day(-1) N(2) in the Gullmarsfjorden (North Sea, Sweden) sediment. The percentage of anammox cell of the total population (stained with DAPI) as assessed by quantitative FISH was highest in the Barents Sea (9% +/- 4%) and in most of the samples well over 2%. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and phylogenetic analysis of the PCR products derived from the marine samples indicated the exclusive presence of members of the Candidatus'Scalindua' genus. This study showed the ubiquitous presence of anammox bacteria in anoxic marine ecosystems, supporting previous observations on the importance of anammox for N cycling in marine environments.  相似文献
