以一片西南桦(Betula alnoides)天然林和一个西南桦独立单株为研究对象, 通过收集散种期内与林分或母树不同距离的种子以及测定风速和风向, 研究了西南桦群落和个体水平上种子雨的时空动态及其与风速和风向的关系。结果表明: 群落水平上, 西南桦种子散布的初始期、高峰期、消退期分别历时11天、32天和40天, 而个体水平上则为9天、25天和26天。高峰期内群落和个体水平的散种量分别占其总量的83.1%和68.7%, 而且白天的种子雨密度高于夜间; 西南桦个体白天种子雨密度最大的时段为12:00-16:00, 与此时段内风速较高有关。在个体水平上, 距离母树0-30 m范围内散落的种子占总散种量的79.6%; 而在群落水平上, 距离林缘0-45 m范围内集中了总散种量的81.2%。西南桦种子散布具有方向性, 无论个体还是群落水平上不同方向间种子雨密度差异极显著(p < 0.01), 与散种期内的主要风向有关; 而且种子雨密度与风速亦呈极显著正相关关系。研究结果将有助于揭示西南桦天然更新动态和更新机制, 亦为开展西南桦人工促进天然更新提供理论依据。  相似文献

Five female grey seals were tracked with satellite-linked time-depth recorders during September to April 1993-1994. Seals remained in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence (Gulf) for 1-2.5 months after capture. Four females dove primarily to depths <10 m and 20-70 m, while all dives of the fifth female, a blind animal, were <10 m. During October/November, all animals moved into the southern Gulf or onto the Scotian Shelf. This migration lasted 6-10 days, during which time animals covered 350-800 km. During that migration, all females, including the blind animal, dove up to 100 m, but the majority of dives were to depths of 40-70 m. Two seals stayed in the southern Gulf through the winter while the others left the Gulf in January. When in the southern Gulf and on the Scotian Shelf, dive depths and bathymetry information indicated that dives were to the bottom.  相似文献

The pattern and characteristics of diving in two female macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus was studied, during the brooding period, using continuous-recording time-depth recorders, for a total of I8 days (15 consecutive days) during which the depth, duration and timing of 4876 dives were recorded. Diving in the first 11 days was exclusively diurnal, averaging 244 dives on trips lasting 12 hours. Near the end of the brooding period trips were longer and included diving at night. About half of all trips (except those involving continuous night-time diving) was spent in diving and dive rate averaged 14–25 dives per hour (42 per hour at night). The duration of day time dives varied between trips, and averaged 1.4–1.7 min, with a subsequent surface interval of 0.5–0.9 min. Dive duration was significantly directly related to depth, the latter accounting for 53% of the variation. The average depths of daytime dives were 20–35 m (maximum depth 11 5 m). Dives at night were shorter (average duration 0.9 min) and much shallower (maximum 11 m); depth accounted for only 6% of the variation in duration. Estimates of potential prey capture rates (3–5 krill per dive; one krill every 17–20 s) are made. Daily weight changes in chicks were directly related to number of dives, but not to foraging trip duration nor time spent diving. Of the other species at the same site which live by diving to catch krill, gentoo penguins forage exclusively diurnally, making longer. deeper dives; Antarctic fur seals, which dive to similar depths as macaroni penguins, do so mainly at night.  相似文献

The dentition of fishes can be quite striking and is often correlated with a specific diet. Combtooth blennies have long incisiform oral teeth, unlike most actinopterygians. It has been suggested that the long tooth morphology is an adaptation for detritivory, but given the diversity of diets (detritus, coral polyps, polychaetes, and pieces of other fishes), are blenny teeth indeed monomorphic? Or does tooth variation associated with diet still exist at this extreme? To explore tooth and diet diversification, we used a new phylogenetic hypothesis of Blenniidae, measured tooth shape, number, and mode of attachment, and quantified blenniid diet. The ancestral diet of blennies contained detritus and diversified into many different diets, including almost exclusively detritivory. Our results reveal a dental cline that may be constrained by tooth shape, but has not prevented diet diversification. Ancestral state reconstruction of tooth morphologies suggests that the ancestor of blennies had many unattached teeth and featured transitions to fewer attached teeth, with several transitions back to attached or unattached teeth. The dentition of blenniids is not monotypic; rather it is diverse and small changes in tooth shape are accompanied by changes in size, number, attachment, and often diet.  相似文献

Summary Under the Antarctic coastal fast ice a light trap proved to be promising device for collecting not only planktonic animals, but also micronektonic animals like krill which have been rarely collected with tow nets. Sampling was conducted at night from May through November, 1984 in Kitano-ura Cove off the East Ongul Island in Lützow-Holm Bay. Design of the gear and the sampling procedure are described. A total of 37 samplings were made that resulted in the collection of seven species of copepods, eight species of amphipods, three forms of notothenid fish larvae, two species each of euphausiids and polychaetes, and one species each of mysid, cumacean, isopod and tanaid crustaceans. All were collected in satisfactory condition for laboratory experiments. During the winter Euphasia superba was found to be benthopelagic and it probably feeds on detritus on the sea floor at about 40 m depth under the ice.JARE-25 Biology Contribution No.1  相似文献

We observed a significant increase in plasma atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in antiorthostatic hypokinetic suspension (AOH) rats after 2 h of suspension when the experiment was made during day. Plasma ANF was investigated in relation to renal glomerular ANF receptors during AOH at night. The aim of this study was 1) to compare the day and night ANF responses to AOH 2) to determine whether the renal glomerular ANF receptors are involved. The rats were divided into 2 groups: i) 24 population cage (PC), and ii) 24 were attached by the tail (Morey's model) and remained in the horizontal position (attached horizontal-AH). Six AH were suspended (30 degrees) for 2 hours (AOH) and sacrificed with the controls: PC and AH (12.00h). The same experiment was made during the night (24.00h). A significant increase in plasma ANF was found in both AOH and AH after 2 h of suspension during day and night (19 +/- 2.3 pg/ml vs 9 +/- 0.95 and 18 +/- 3 pg/ml vs 10.2 +/- 1.8 respectively). PC rats had a significantly higher ANF level (38 +/- 5 pg/ml) than AH or AOH. The glomerular ANF receptor population was slightly lower in AOH than in AH (429 +/- 12 fmol/mg protein vs 507 +/- 5) during day. During night, a significantly lower number of ANF receptors was observed in AOH animals as compared to AH (168 +/- 2 fmol/mg protein vs 455 +/- 3). A decrease in glomerular receptors was also noted in PC during night. Day-time head-down tilt, bed rest or head-out water induced a natriuretic and diuretic response, whereas the normal recumbency at night does not lead to such effects. We conclude that the natriuretic and diuretic response not observed during night was associated with elevated plasma ANF levels and decreased ANF receptor density.  相似文献

Gas exchange characteristics of a hemiparasiteMelampyrum arvense L. before and after attachment to the hostCapsella bursa pastoris (L.) Med. were compared. The net photosynthetic rates (PN) on a leaf area basis were extremely low and in comparison to the value obtained for the host were about 15 % and 23 % for the unattached and attached hemiparasite, respectively. Also the concentration of photosynthetic pigments was low (as compared with the host the content of chlorophylls was about 33 % and 49 % and of carotenoids about 38 % and 36 % in the unattached and attached hemiparasite, respectively). On the other hand the rates of respiration were high (about 1.8 and 2.6 times higher in the unattached and attached hemiparasite, respectively, than in the host). In darkness stomatal conductance (gS) of the host and the unattached hemiparasite was rapidly reduced to 10 % of the value obtained in light, gS of the attached hemiparasite was decreased only by about 30%. A total reduction of gS occurred at relative water content (RWC) of 85 %, 75% and 45 % for the unattached hemiparasite, the host, and the attached hemiparasite, respectively. The transpiration (E) rate in the preparasitic stage was very low, being 2.6 and 4.5 times smaller than in the host and the attached hemiparasite, respectively. In the attached hemiparasite WUE was 7.5 and 3 times poorer than in the host and in the preparasitic stage, respectively.  相似文献

Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were attached to 31 ocean sunfish, Mola mola. in the Northwest Atlantic between 2005 and 2008, in order to examine their vertical movement and behavior. Tags remained attached from 7 to 242 days, with a mean attachment period of 107.2 ± 80.6 (SD) days. Fish spent greater than 30% of their time in the top 10 m of the water column, and over 80% of time in the top 200 m. The maximum depth recorded by any fish was 844 m. Temperatures experienced by tagged fish ranged from 6 to 30 °C. Vertical behavior of M. mola changed over short-term and seasonal scales. Ocean sunfish in northeastern US waters in the summer months inhabited shallower depths and spent more time at the surface than those that moved south in the winter and spring. This shift from shallow to deeper depths was especially apparent when fish entered the Gulf Stream, where they spent little time at the surface and dove to depths of 400-800 m. A diel pattern was observed in vertical behavior. Tagged fish spent more time at depth during the day and inhabited shallower waters at night. There was no observed relationship between the amount of time per day that fish spent in cold water (< 10 °C) and the amount of time fish spent near the surface (0-6 m), indicating a lack of evidence for M. mola basking at the surface as a mechanism for behavioral thermoregulation.  相似文献

Diel and seasonal variations in abundance, activity, and structure of particle-attached vs free-living bacterial communities were investigated in offshore NW Mediterranean Sea (0–1000 m). Attached bacteria were always less abundant and less diverse but generally more active than free-living bacteria. The most important finding of this study was that the activity of attached bacteria showed pronounced diel variations in the upper mixed water column with higher activities at night. Under mesotrophic conditions, the contribution of attached bacteria to total bacterial activity increased from less than 10% at day time to 83% at night time. At high chlorophyll a concentration, the highest cell-specific activities and contribution to total bacterial activity were due to free-living bacteria at day and to attached bacteria at night. Under summer oligotrophic conditions, free-living bacteria dominated and contributed to the most important part of the bacterial activity at both day and night, whereas attached bacteria were much less abundant but presented the highest cell-specific activities. These diel and seasonal variations in activities were concomitant to changes in bacterial community structure, mainly in the upper layer. The number of attached ribotypes was fairly constant suggesting that particles are colonized by a relatively limited number of ubiquitous ribotypes. Most of these ribotypes were also free-living ribotypes suggesting that attached bacteria probably originate from colonization of newly formed particles by free-living bacteria in the upper layer. These results reinforce the biogeochemical role of attached bacteria in the cycling of particulate organic carbon in the NW Mediterranean Sea and the importance of diel variability in these processes.  相似文献

Some central cholinergic effects have been reported in animals after acute exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic field at low intensity. We studied acetylcholine (ACh) release in the brain of freely moving rats exposed for 1 h during the day to a 2.45 GHz continuous wave radiofrequency field (RF) (2 or 4 mW/cm(2)) or exposed for 1 or 14 h during the night to a 800 MHz field modulated at 32 Hz (AM 200 mW/cm(2)). Measurements were performed by microdialysis using a membrane implanted through the upper CA1 region of the hippocampus. After irradiation with the 2.45 GHz RF, rats exposed at 2 mW/cm(2) did not show a significant modification of Ach release, whereas those exposed at 4 mW/cm(2) showed a significant 40% decrease in mean ACh release from hippocampus. This decrease was maximal at 5 h post exposure. Exposure to the 800 MHz RF for 1 h did not cause any significant effect, but exposure for 14 hrs induced a significant 43% decrease in ACh release during the period 11 p.m.-4 a.m. compared to control rats. In the control group we observed an increase of ACh release at the beginning of the night, which was linked to the waking period of rats. This normal increase was disturbed in rats exposed overnight to the 800 MHz RF. This work indicates that neurochemical modification of the hippocampal cholinergic system can be observed during and after an exposure to low intensity RF.  相似文献

Studies in Cameroon and Burkina Faso examined the invasion process of cattle by adult Amblyomma variegatum Fabricius (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks. Nearly all the ticks picked up in the pasture during grazing were found on the limb ends, near the hooves, where they temporarily attached. Then when the cattle lay down, the ticks moved from the feet towards the predilection sites, where they attached definitively. Many ticks disappeared during this displacement. All the female ticks and approximately 70% of the males were thus unable to attach to the predilection sites as long as the pioneer males had not attached and started to produce attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromones. Nevertheless, A. variegatum females and males attached to the feet in similar numbers during grazing, whether the cattle were already infested or not, indicating that stimuli originating from the hosts are powerful enough to attract both sexes. After attachment of the pioneer males, the number of ticks that successfully reached the predilection sites increased. However, even on infested animals, 40-50% of A. variegatum ticks found near the hooves after the grazing periods disappeared during the night following their capture. When moving from the temporary attachment sites towards the final ones, one-third of the ticks changed the individual host. Considering this two-stage infestation process, it is suggested that a targeted tick control, using a foot-bath, might greatly reduce cattle infestation. In particular, it could be effective in traditional herds, with animals grazing permanently during the day, lying down only once back in the night pen.  相似文献

Abstract. Relationships between seed deposition, size of soil seed banks and some of the environmental factors affecting them were assessed for Calluna vulgaris throughout its altitudinal range (150–960 m a.s.l.) in eastern Scotland. Seed rain was assessed using pitfall traps, collected every 5–10 wk for 3 yr; germinability was determined by laboratory incubation. Seed bank size was estimated, once only, by counting seedlings emerging from soil cores kept for 50 wk in a glasshouse. Seed deposition varied annually, was related to parent plant cover but always declined with altitude, falling sharply above 600 m a.s.l. Seed bank size was more closely correlated with the proportion of organic matter in the soil than with the amount of seed rain. Seed bank sizes declined gradually with altitude but did not differ significantly between four altitudinal zones. The mean density of buried seeds was less than half the mean annual seed rain at sites below 300 m a.s.l. but was over 200 × greater than annual seed rain above 800 m, suggesting that seeds buried at high altitudes remain viable for much longer than those at lower altitudes.  相似文献

Mesopodopsis africana is an important mysid in southern African coastal zooplankton and a key species in the St Lucia estuarine lake, which is currently undergoing severe desiccation owing to freshwater deprivation. M. africana populations through much of the system are consequently under severe environmental stress. This study investigates the grazing dynamics of this mysid species, in relation to autotrophic food availability and other environmental constraints in two contrasting areas of the St Lucia Estuary, Charters Creek, heavily affected by the desiccation process and the Mouth, virtually under unchanged conditions. Gut evacuation experiments were conducted once each during the day and the night. Evacuation rates were consistently higher during the night, ranging from 0.27 to 0.33 h-1 at Charters Creek and from 1.13 to 1.24 h-1 at the Mouth. Ingestion rates were, therefore, higher at the Mouth resulting in population grazing impacts of 2.5% of the total microalgal biomass, while the grazing impact at Charters Creek was only 0.5%. The spatial variation in ingestion rates could be attributed to seasonal differences in gut evacuation rates, differences in the mean size of mysids used, or the physicochemical conditions present at the two stations. It is suggested that mysid populations at Charters Creek are predominantly driven by bottom-up forces, initiated by the harsh environmental conditions. Despite the lower ingestion rates exhibited at Charters Creek, results indicate that these mysids are capable of meeting all their energetic requirements from a microalgal diet alone, although they may also utilise a heterotrophic diet.  相似文献

The content of abscisic acid (ABA) in abaxial leaf epidermis of the host (Capsella bursa pastoris) and the unattached hemiparasiteMelampyrum arvense showed diurnal changes. ABA content increased during the light period and declined rapidly upon the darkening of leaves. In an attached hemiparasite the content of ABA in the epidermis was maintained at an almost constant level irrespective of the diurnal cycle. As compared with the maximum level in the host, at the end of the light phase the content of ABA in abaxial epidermis constituted about 70 % and 164 % in the unattached and attached hemiparasite, respectively. No significant changes in ABA content were recorded in adaxial epidermis. In all the samples abaxial/adaxial epidermis ABA content ratio was about 3.6:1 in light phase. In darkness this ratio decreased to about 1.1:1 in the host and the unattached hemiparasite and did not show significant change after attachment. ABA content ratio in mesophyll was 1:0.7:1.5 for the host, the unattached, and attached hemiparasite, respectively. In comparison with the host the concentration of ABA in xylem sap of the hemiparasite constituted about 31 % and 152 % for the unattached and attachedM. arvense, respectively.  相似文献

Growth of the hemiparasite Rhinanthus serotinus (Schönh.) Oborny was greatly stimulated after attachment of the parasite to the roots of the host plant, Hordeum vulgare L. In order to find the limiting factors for the growth of Rhinanthus without a host, unattached and attached Rhinanthus plants were compared. Within I day after attachment the contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sodium increased considerably. Organic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were rapidly synthesized in attached Rhinanthus. The accumulation of sugars in unattached Rhinanthus and the decrease in sugar content after attachment suggested that the main requirement from the host was not for carbohydrates.  相似文献

The bacteria colonizing geologic core sections (attached) were contrasted with those found suspended in the groundwater (unattached) by examining the microbiology of 16 depth-paired core and groundwater samples using a suite of culture-independent and culture-dependent analyses. One hundred twenty-two meters was continuously cored from a buried chalcopyrite ore hosted in a biotite-quartz-monzonite porphyry at the Mineral Park Mine near Kingman, Ariz. Every fourth 1.5-m core was acquired using microbiologically defensible methods, and these core sections were aseptically processed for characterization of the attached bacteria. Groundwater samples containing unattached bacteria were collected from the uncased corehole at depth intervals corresponding to the individual cores using an inflatable straddle packer sampler. The groundwater was acidic (pH 2.8 to 5.0), with low levels of dissolved oxygen and high concentrations of sulfate and metals, including ferrous iron. Total numbers of attached cells were less than 10(5) cells g of core material(-1) while unattached cells numbered about 10(5) cells ml of groundwater(-1). Attached and unattached acidophilic heterotrophs were observed throughout the depth profile. In contrast, acidophilic chemolithotrophs were not found attached to the rock but were commonly observed in the groundwater. Attached communities were composed of low numbers (<40 CFU g(-1)) of neutrophilic heterotrophs that exhibited a high degree of morphologic diversity, while unattached communities contained higher numbers (ca. 10(3) CFU ml(-1)) of neutrophilic heterotrophs of limited diversity. Sulfate-reducing bacteria were restricted to the deepest samples of both core and groundwater. 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis of attached, acidophilic isolates indicated that organisms closely related to heterotrophic, acidophilic mesophiles such as Acidiphilium organovorum and, surprisingly, to the moderately thermophilic Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius were present. The results indicate that viable (but possibly inactive) microorganisms were present in the buried ore and that there was substantial distinction in biomass and physiological capabilities between attached and unattached populations.  相似文献

The impact of relatively small externally attached time series recorders on some foraging parameters of seabirds was investigated during the austral summer of 1995 by monitoring the diving behaviour of 10 free-ranging king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) over one foraging trip. Time-depth recorders were implanted in the abdominal cavities of the birds, and half of the animals also had dummy loggers attached on their backs. Although most of the diving behaviour was not significantly affected by the external loggers (P>0.05), the birds with externally attached loggers performed almost twice as many shallow dives, between 0 and 10 m depth, as the birds without external loggers. These shallow dives interrupted more frequently the deep-diving sequences in the case of birds with external loggers (percentage of deep dives followed by deep dives: 46% for birds with implants only vs. 26% for birds with an external attachment). Finally, the distribution pattern of the postdive durations plotted against the hour of the day was more heterogeneous for the birds with an external package. In addition, these penguins had extended surfacing times between two deep dives compared to birds without external attachments (P<0.0001). These results suggest the existence of an extra energy cost induced by externally attached loggers.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal and spatial patterns of benthic invertebrate abundance were examined in relation to benthic detritus in Monument Creek, an Alaskan subarctic stream. The total macroinvertebrate fauna showed a mid-summer low in abundance, increasing to seasonal highs in winter/early spring (November/May). Shredders were a small portion of the benthic fauna or leaf pack fauna in summer but increased rapidly (in biovolume) following autumnal leaf fall to dominate the fauna by early winter (October/November). Abundance was strongly correlated with quantity of detritus in the sample. Comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate densities from Alaskan streams with comparable data from temperate zone streams shows that Alaskan streams are similar to temperate zone streams in range of abundance. Each unit of benthic detritus in Monument Creek is associated with a relatively large number of small (low individual biomass) shredders compared to streams in temperate regions. Detrital resources in this subarctic stream were meager, compared to temperate streams, and appeared to strongly influence the spatial and temporal patterns of detritivores.  相似文献

Summary The relative significance of attached and unattached bacteria in bio-oxidation was assessed using a fluidised bed reactor. The unattached bacteria were removed from the system after different times in batch culture. Following wasout, the concentration of unattached bacteria recovered rapidly. This was ascribed to desorption of attached bacteria rather than growth of free, unattached bacteria. Throughout the cell depletion and repopulation phase, the rate of pyrite oxidation remained fairly constant.  相似文献

Anthropogenic disturbance may affect animal behaviour and should generally be minimised. We examined how anthropogenic disturbance (24 h food deprivation) affected circadian rhythms in laboratory mussels Mytilus edulis exposed to natural light in the absence of tides. Repeated measures data were collected on mussel gape angle, exhalant pumping and valve adduction using a Hall sensor system over eight consecutive 24 h periods when exposed to two feeding conditions after 24 h food deprivation. Mussels (fed once per day at either midday or midnight) exposed to natural light showed a clear day–night rhythm with increased nocturnal activity: significantly greater gape angle, increased exhalant pumping and had significantly higher valve adduction rates. However, circadian rhythms were less clear directly after anthropogenic food deprivation, in terms of the circadian rhythm in gape angle becoming significantly more apparent over the following days. Unlike mussels fed at midnight, those fed at midday displayed no significant change in gape angle from the hour before to the hour after they were fed, i.e. mussels given food at midday reacted to this food less than mussels fed at midnight. We suggest that independent of feeding time, laboratory mussels exposed to natural light and free from anthropogenic disturbance increase feeding activity at night because their circadian rhythms are strongly influenced by light levels. This study emphasises that the behaviour of animals in the laboratory and in the wild can be altered by anthropogenic disturbances such as vibrations caused by experimental setups and artificial illumination at night.  相似文献
