An intriguing question in developmental biology is how epidermal pattern formation processes are established and what are the molecular mechanisms involved in these events. The establishment of the pattern is concomitant with the formation of ectodermal appendages, which involves complex interactions between the epithelium and the underlying mesenchyme. Among ectodermal appendages, hair follicles are the “mini organs” that produce hair shafts. Several developmental and structural features are common to all hair follicles and to the hair shaft they produce. However, many different hair types are produced in a single organism. Also, different characteristics can be observed depending on the part of the body where the hair follicle is formed. Here, we review the mechanisms involved in the patterning of different hair types during mouse embryonic development as well as the influence of the body axes on hair patterning. Human hair lipids form a complex mixture of composition close to that of sebum. Part of these lipids appears in an organized state that has been studied by diffraction techniques in the literature. Nevertheless, information on the structure of these lipids remains very scarce due to their low contribution to global hair diffraction pattern. Here we show that appropriate lead treatment considerably enhances organized lipid features observed by microbeam synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments. We attribute these features to the formation of lead soaps of free fatty acids. Specific orientation of hair "lipid crystals" in planes parallel to the hair axis is clearly demonstrated. Inclusion of these lipids in the bulk of the hair shaft is shown by diffraction experiments following removal of the cuticular outermost layer of hair. Moreover, microfluorescence and diffraction experiments are consistent with part of the lipids being present as calcium soaps in native hair. We therefore consider lead fixation as a powerful tool to evaluate the lipid organization in human hair for medical, environmental and archaeological purposes, including lead poisoning.  相似文献

研究了多次接触7 种染发剂对不同组小鼠骨髓和生殖细胞染色体畸变率的影响。结果发现, 7 种染发剂均导致出现较高的染色体畸变率,3 种能引起小鼠骨髓细胞染色体畸变率显著上升, 其中以粉末状染发剂的影响最为严重。4 种染发剂对进行生殖细胞染色体畸变实验的小鼠均产生显著影响, 尤以氧化型染发剂最为明显。  相似文献

Summary A sensitive radioenzymatic assay of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) in hair root cells is presented. Only five hair roots with intact bulb and sheath are needed for one assay. By pulling 15–20 hairs, 3–4 parallel assays can be performed. As in erythrocytes the COMT activity in hair root cells is constant for each individual. Nevertheless, there is no high correlation between the enzyme activities in erythrocyte and in hair root cells (r=0.26, 0.1> P>0.05, N=46).The determination of COMT in hair root cells offers a further application of this source in genetic research, as in the study of a correlation between COMT activity and various endogenous psychiatric disorders.Part of the thesis of T. The mechanosensitive hair cells of the inner ear are crucial to hearing and vestibular function. Each hair cell detects the mechanical stimuli associated with sound or head movement with a hair bundle at the apical surface of the cell, consisting of a precise array of actin‐based stereocilia. Each stereocilium inserts as a rootlet into a dense filamentous actin mesh known as the cuticular plate. Disruption of the parallel actin bundles forming the stereocilia results in hearing impairments and balance defects. The cuticular plate is thought to be involved in holding the stereocilia in place. However, the precise role of the cuticular plate in hair bundle development, maintenance, and hearing remains unknown. Ultrastructural studies have revealed a complex cytoskeletal architecture, but a lack of knowledge of proteins that inhabit the cuticular plate and a dearth of mutations that perturb relevant proteins have hindered our understanding of the functions of the cuticular plate. Here, we discuss what is known about the structure and development of this unique and poorly‐understood actin‐rich organelle. The hair follicle attracted significant attention as a model for the investigation of diverse biological problems. Whereas its morphology and the structure of the hair shaft are known in detail, the molecular biology of this miniorgan is significantly less characterised. Many efforts focussed on the development of the hair follicle and its stem cell reservoir; by contrast, the follicular product, the hair, which is interesting not only in terms of cosmetics was neglected. This review highlights our current knowledge of the control of hair structure and shape with emphasis on mouse hair follicle biology and discusses continuing problems.  相似文献

A kinky-coat mutant was discovered at the fifth generation of the BAN strain originating from wild musk shrews (Suncus murinus) in Bangladesh. Mating experiments indicated that the kinky-coat character is controlled by a single autosomal recessive gene designated kc (kinky coat), which is not allelic to the gene ch (curly hair) previously reported in the Tr strain derived from wild musk shrews on Taramajima Island, Japan. Because the kc/kc homozygotes were fully fertile and viable, the kc gene should be useful as a genetic marker in linkage studies. In external appearance, homozygotes were characterized by curly vibrissae, somewhat unkept coat hair, and wavy long hair on the tail. Both the length and width of coat hair did not differ significantly between homozygous and normal shrews. Light microscopic observations showed that shafts of the kc coat hair are wavy and often have small swellings with disorganization of the medullary structure. Scanning electron microscopic examinations further revealed that the shafts of the vibrissae, coat hair, and tail hair have abnormalities such as longitudinal fissures, twists, and hollows. It is clear that these modifications caused waviness or curling of the shafts of the three kinds of hairs observed.  相似文献

We extracted the yellow melanin (phaeomelanin), black melanin (eumelanin), and mixed type of melanin from dorsal hair of dominant yellow (A y /a), non-agouti (a/a), and agouti (A/A) mice, respectively. Spectrophotometric and fluorescence spectrophotometric analysis demonstrated that the yellow melanin was qualitatively distinct from the black melanin and that the agouti hair contained both types of pigment.This work was supported by Grant 244004 from the Ministry of Education. A two-step auto-injector has been developed for the automated on-column derivatization and subsequent GC-MS of amine-type drugs and metabolites. To effectively derivatize such analytes, this injector has been designed to inject the derivatization reagent several seconds after the sample has been injected. Eleven kinds of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and their typical metabolites were examined, using the trifluoroacetylation reagent N-methyl bis(trifluoroacetamide) (MBTFA). Although the quantitative derivatization of the hydroxyl groups was difficult, this technique was successfully applied to the determination of ATS in urine, blood, and hair specimens. The detection limits of methamphetamine and amphetamine in hair were 0.2 and 0.1 ng/mg hair, respectively, in the full-scan mode, when a 10 mg hair sample is analyzed.  相似文献

Two different kinds of mechanoreceptive hairs (smooth and feathered) on the second antennae of the freshwater crayfish, Orconectes virilis, have been investigated for their stimulus coding propertics. These mechanoreceptors show a great deal of non-linear behaviour both in threshold and in directionality. An effective appraoch for the investigation of such systems is noise analysis in the frequency domain. This method has been used here to calculate zero-, first- and second-order kernels. Sensory cells reveal different first- and second-order kernels, depending on which type of hair is being stimulated. The first-order kernel has a pronounced peak in the frequency response at 110 Hz if a feathered hair is stimulated and at 60 Hz if a smooth hair is stimulated. The second-order kernel shows a number of pronounced peaks in the frequency response between 40 and 110 Hz, but only if a feathered hair is stimulated. Smooth hair stimulation results in less sharp peaks but in higher gain for the same range of stimulus frequencies.  相似文献

Both male facial hair and male pattern baldness are genetically based, suggesting that they contributed to fitness. The multiple fitness model provides an evolutionary interpretation of the social perception of male pattern baldness and beardedness in terms of the multidimensional meaning of physical maturational stages. Male facial beardedness is associated with the sexual maturation stage and is hypothesized to signal aggressive dominance. Male pattern baldness, by contrast, is associated with the next stage of physical maturation, termed senescence. Pattern baldness may signal social maturity, a non-threatening form of dominance associated with wisdom and nurturance. We tested these hypotheses on social perceptions using manipulated male facial stimuli. We presented faces with three levels of cranial hair, including full, receding, and bald, and two levels of facial hair, beard with moustache and clean shaven. Consistent with the model, a decrease in the amount of cranial hair was associated with increased perceptions of social maturity, appeasement, and age, and decreased perceptions of attractiveness and aggressiveness. Targets with facial hair were perceived as more aggressive, less appeasing, less attractive, older, and lower on social maturity than clean shaven faces.  相似文献

Patch clamp analyses of the voltage-gated channels in sensory hair cells isolated from a variety of species have been described previously1-4 but this video represents the first application of those techniques to hair cells from zebrafish. Here we demonstrate a method to isolate healthy, intact hair cells from all of the inner ear end-organs: saccule, lagena, utricle and semicircular canals. Further, we demonstrate the diversity in hair cell size and morphology and give an example of the kinds of patch clamp recordings that can be obtained. The advantage of the use of this zebrafish model system over others stems from the availability of zebrafish mutants that affect both hearing and balance. In combination with the use of transgenic lines and other techniques that utilize genetic analysis and manipulation, the cell isolation and electrophysiological methods introduced here should facilitate greater insight into the roles hair cells play in mediating these sensory modalities.  相似文献

Temporal variations of carbon isotope composition of hair taken from faces of three men with different health state were studied. Drastic enrichment (up to 20%) of hair carbon in heavy isotope, as compared to the basic line reflecting background isotope variations was discovered in one of the men under test. This enrichment correlated with his worsened state of health. Then carbon isotope composition of hair returned to the background level. Probable explanation of this correlation was suggested in terms of earlier described mechanism of carbon isotope fractionation in a living cell.  相似文献

The effects of amino acids on the labellar hair chemosensory cells were examined with two kinds of flies (the fleshfly, Boettcherisca peregrina, and the blowfly, Phormia regina). As a result of this examination, the effects of amino acids were divided into four main classes. Amino acids in class 1 did not stimulate any chemoreceptor cell. Amino acids in class 2 inhibited nonspecifically the discharges from three kinds of chemosensory cells. Amino acids in class 3 stimulated the salt receptor cell. Amino acids in class 4 stimulated the sugar receptor cell. A possibility that a fourth neuron in the labellar hair chemosensory cell might be a protein or an amino acid receptor cell was eliminated.  相似文献

Confocal microscopy is an excellent method for studying the localization of fluorescent stains. Used in this way, superior 3D images can be obtained from multiple optical sections with very shallow depth of field. The main advantage of this technique is that the sample is not damaged. We have taken serial confocal sections of hair and via specific image enhancement routines have obtained high-quality 3D images enabling the visualization of cuticle scale and its pattern of distribution. This has been done on various types of hair: bleached, permed and in certain pathological conditions. This first step will allow us to characterize the hair surface in terms of its roughness, and the distribution and form of cuticular scale, parameters that have potential in the assessment of dermocosmetic efficacy.  相似文献

对国产省藤属(Calamus L.)植物17种2变种的叶表皮进行光学显微镜观察,除单叶省藤(C.simplicifolius)、短叶省藤(C.egregiw)和白藤(C.tetradactylus)外,其它种均为首次报道。省藤属植物的叶表皮形态较为一致,气孔器为轮列4细胞型(tetracytic,或称四轮列型),即有4个副卫细胞,其中2个为侧副卫细胞,2个为端副卫细胞;表皮细胞为长方形,纵向排列。表皮毛有3种类型:多细胞排成单列的单毛(人喙省藤C.macrorrhynchus)、多细胞排成2-3列的单毛(毛鳞省藤ethysanolepis等)、多细胞分枝毛(白藤等)。表皮细胞的长度和宽度特征、细胞壁的厚薄及波纹的深浅和形状、端副卫细胞的长短等细微特征在种问存在差异,可以区分种类。叶表皮结构还反映了种问的亲缘关系。因此,叶表皮特征对于省藤属种类的划分和亲缘关系的确定有较大的分类学意义。  相似文献

Part A of this review describes the particular computer-assisted identification service operated by the NCTC. In Part B, the use of probability matrices is examined, discussing various methods of calculating likelihoods and the problems that arise when calculating these from probability matrices. Part C describes the alternative numerical methods of constructing identification keys and the supplementary methods of selecting best sets of characters to aid identification.
