Here we present, for the first time, a glossary of biometeorological terms. The glossary aims to address the need for a reliable source of biometeorological definitions, thereby facilitating communication and mutual understanding in this rapidly expanding field. A total of 171 terms are defined, with reference to 234 citations. It is anticipated that the glossary will be revisited in coming years, updating terms and adding new terms, as appropriate. The glossary is intended to provide a useful resource to the biometeorology community, and to this end, readers are encouraged to contact the lead author to suggest additional terms for inclusion in later versions of the glossary as a result of new and emerging developments in the field. 相似文献

The considerable variation and confusion in terminology used in the teaching of plant water relations is discussed. The concept of water potential is described briefly and compared with the older concepts of diffusion pressure deficit and suction pressure. The advantages of using water potential terminology are considered. Reference is made to some well-known student texts to illustrate the conflicting meanings of osmotic terms and symbols, and attention is drawn to the problems which arise when authors mix old and new terms. It is recommended that the new terminology should be incorporated into school examination syllabuses and textbooks as soon as possible. 相似文献

Recent advances in biological imaging have resulted in an explosion in the quality and quantity of images obtained in a digital format. Developmental biologists are increasingly acquiring beautiful and complex images, thus creating vast image datasets. In the past, patterns in image data have been detected by the human eye. Larger datasets, however, necessitate high-throughput objective analysis tools to computationally extract quantitative information from the images. These tools have been developed in collaborations between biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians and physicists. In this Primer we present a glossary of image analysis terms to aid biologists and briefly discuss the importance of robust image analysis in developmental studies. 相似文献

The multidisciplinary use of cell, tissue and organ culture techniques, and the attendant use of terms in an ever widening sense, has made it necessary to bring together those terms most often used by scientists employing these techniques. Thus, the Tissue Culture Association Terminology Committee publishes the following integrated listing in an attempt to avoid the confusion which arises when scientists of different disciplines give more than one definition to a particular term or use more than one term to describe the same phenomenon. We present a key synthesizing pollen-sculpture terminology for grains having perforations or lumina of any size and spatial distribution. The key uses quantitative criteria to distinguish five non-overlapping qualitative terms (reticulate, microreticulate, foveolate, scrobiculate, and punctate). In addition, the range of quantitative variation encompassed by these qualitative terms is highlighted, including ways to express and compare that variation using computerized image analysis of SEM micrographs. Finally, a mathematical analysis combined with image-analysis measurements is used to explore the relationships between the terms outlined above and two closely related terms, tectate and semitectate. 相似文献
