The dispersal mechanisms of 37 species of plants which occur on Amazonian white sand campinas were studied. 75.67 percent of the species have the potential for long distance diaspore dispersal, including 59.46 percent which are bird-dispersed. This dispersal disharmony towards long-distance dispersal and especially towards ornithochory is characteristic of islands in general. The campinas of the lower Rio Negro region of Amazonia may be treated biogeographically as islands surrounded by large areas of tropical rain forest. A total of eight dispersal types was observed and details of these mechanisms are presented. The type of germination of many of the species studied is reported for the first time.  相似文献

There have been few studies of the fauna of the distinctive vegetation that grows on sandy soil in Amazonia. Leached and nutrient-poor sandy soil is associated with a vegetation type that varies in structure from open fields (campinas) to low canopy forests (campinaranas). During a bird inventory in sandy soil vegetation at Jaú National Park (JNP), I recorded 128 bird species, with 55 in campina and 94 in campinarana. Estimates suggested only 150 bird species should be expected to occur in these habitats, a reduced species diversity compared with other vegetation types in the Amazon region. This low species diversity is probably linked to the low productivity of this habitat and its relatively simple vegetation structure. Despite the relatively low diversity, at least 14 bird species (3% of the entire avifauna) appear to be restricted to white sand vegetation in JNP. In Amazonia as a whole, some 37 bird species are associated with vegetation in sandy soils. Biological inventories of other taxa are needed to understand the contribution of white sandy vegetation to the faunal distribution in Amazonia.  相似文献

An igapó forest near the confluence of Rio Tarumã Mirim (Tarumãzinho) and Rio Negro has been studied. It is a typical ectotroph forest with a raw humus layer and suppressed litter decomposing activity by Higher (i.e., carpophore-producing) Fungi. The number of the latter is about one-fifth of that observed in the (anectotrophic) terra firme forest. All ectotrophically mycorrhizal fungi observed belonged in three families:Amanitaceae, Boletaceae, Russulaceae. Leguminosae are dominant, and of theseAldina latifolia andSwartzia cf.polyphylla were demonstrably ectomycorrhizal. The scarcity of mineral nutrients in the soils of igapó, campinarana and campina is overcome by direct cycling through ectomycorrhizae. Blackwater floodplain forests of the Rio Negro are susceptible to understory fires. Bird composition was distinct between burned and unburned floodplain forest but not between young (12–18 yr) and old burns (>25 yr), indicating low resilience after fire. 1. Historic and extant landscape structures and environmental conditions are known to influence phylogeographic patterns and population histories in organisms from Amazonia. Recent work suggests that events of the Tertiary Period have played a significant role in generating biodiversity in this exceptionally rich but understudied region. However, species distributions and population structures are also affected by recent environmental and physical changes, especially within highly dynamic ecosystems. 2. The cardinal tetra is a small luminous fish native to the dynamic flooded forest ecosystems of the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins of South America. This very popular aquarium fish represents the single most important species in the ornamental fishery of the Rio Negro, an activity of high socio‐economic value for local riverine communities. Here we use a fine‐scale sampling regime and sequence data from the second intron of the Ribosomal protein S7 (S7 2) to investigate population structure, colonisation history and genealogical relationships in cardinal tetras of the Rio Negro. 3. High levels of S7 2 polymorphisms revealed phylogeographic patterns across several temporal settings that appear associated with the complex dynamics of the region. Our results suggest a long history of isolation and persistence of cardinal tetra populations in the headwaters and upper regions of the Rio Negro and recent events of colonisation within the incipient Rio Negro floodplain. These colonisation events were followed by recent population expansions likely facilitated by the establishment of the extensive Rio Negro floodplain, an anabranching ecosystem of Holocene age. 4. Our reconstruction of the phylogeographic history of cardinal tetras based on S7 2 intron sequence data reflects the complex influence of both geomorphological and climatic events through time in the Rio Negro basin. Our findings also indicate that in order to maintain the cardinal tetra fishery as a sustainable activity for rural Amazonians, the fishery should be restricted to the middle Rio Negro, the region of the basin where population replenishment is more likely to occur.  相似文献

Aim To assess the utility of indigenous habitat knowledge in studies of habitat diversity in Amazonia. Location Baniwa indigenous communities in Rio Içana, upper Rio Negro, Brazil. Methods Six campinarana vegetation types, recognized and named by a consensus of Baniwa indigenous informants according to salient indicator species, were studied in 15 widely distributed plots. Floristic composition (using Baniwa plant nomenclature only, after frustrated attempts to obtain botanical collection permits), quantitative measures of forest structure and GPS waypoints of the 4‐ha composite plot contours were registered, permitting their location on Landsat satellite images. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination was carried out using pc‐ord software. Results The NMDS ordinations of the plot data revealed a clear gradient of floristic composition that was highly correlated with three quantitative measures of forest structure: basal area, canopy height and satellite reflectance. Main conclusions Baniwa‐defined forest types are excellent predictors of habitat diversity along the structural gradient comprising distinctive white‐sand campinarana vegetation types. Indigenous ecological knowledge, as revealed by satellite imagery and floristic analyses, proves to be a powerful and efficient shortcut to assessing habitat diversity, promoting dialogue between scientific and indigenous worldviews, and promoting joint study and conservation of biodiversity.  相似文献

The ecogeographical differentiation of Amazonian inundation forests   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Due to the considerable annual fluctuations of water level of the Amazonian rivers, their river banks are fringed with periodically flooded forests of vast extension. The biota of these communities are adapted to annual inundations that can last for more than half a year. Water chemistry is most important for the floristic differentiation of these flooded forests. White water rivers, which carry a rich load of suspended material originating from the erosion of the Andes, have a floristic composition related to that of the noninundatable Amazonian forest. Clear water and black water rivers, which originate in the Amazon Basin or its adjacent crystalline shields, are nutrient-poor and more or less acidic; their flora is related to that of peculiar woodland and savannah vegetation on oligotrophic white sand. The distribution patterns of floodplain species of nutrient-poor waters point to a centre of diversity in the Upper Rio Negro region, and another one in the Guayana lowland. These coincide with diversity centres for species of non-flooded habitats. Hence it seems unlikely that species diversity is directly influenced by pluviosity. The flooded forests have developed biotic interactions with the fish fauna of the Amazon Basin, which are vital for their continued existence. It is assumed that the origin of these habitats, their biota and their interactions dates back long into the Tertiary.  相似文献

This study is the first to present a quantitative survey of bird species occurring in the archipelago of Anavilhanas, located in the Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon and is part of the Anavilhanas Ecological Station. We asked whether bird community composition is similar among the islands, and between islands and areas dominated by the surrounding upland terra firme forest on the left (east) margin of the Rio Negro. The surveys were conducted in November and December of 1988, using two complementary methods with mist nets and boat transects. A total of 232 bird species was found for Anavilhanas including a survey done in 1998. The families Tyrannidae and Thamnophilidae showed the highest number of species (16.4% and 9.0% of the total respectively). Some species not well known or having limited distributions are relatively frequently encountered in the archipelago, such as Spizastur melanoleucus, Mitu tomentosa, Phaethornis rupurumii, Xiphorhynchus kienerii, Thamnophilus nigrocinereus, Myrmotherula klagesi, Myrmoborus lugubris, Pipra filicauda, and Cephalopterus ornatus. Hybrid Multidimensional Scaling (HMDS) ordination analysis indicated that the bird community composition is similar among islands. However, the bird community composition on the islands was significantly different from that in sites of terra firme forest at Rio Negro margins. Anavilhanas is a unique ecological system in the Amazon and has it own avifauna.  相似文献

In the present study, we compare the genetic structure of a flooded forest tree Caryocar microcarpum and a terra firme forest tree Caryocar villosum in the lower Rio Negro region and test the hypothesis that the Rio Negro, the largest tributary on the left bank of the Amazon River, has been acting as a geographical barrier to gene flow between populations from the left and right banks. Seventeen adult individuals on the left bank and 27 on the right bank of Rio Negro were sampled for C. microcarpum, whereas 27 on the left and 20 on the right bank were sampled for C. villosum. Two chloroplast DNA regions were sequenced: the intron of trnL gene and the intergenic region between psbA and trnH genes; and all individuals were genotyped using ten microsatellite loci. The trnL intron and psbA‐trnH intergenic spacer generated fragments of 459 bp and 424 bp, respectively. For C. microcarpum, six haplotypes were identified for trnL and seven for psbA‐trnH. By contrast, only one haplotype was found for C. villosum for both sequences. The results obtained showed that the Rio Negro has not been a barrier to gene flow by pollen and seeds for either species. No genetic differentiation and a high migration rate between populations from the left and right banks of the Rio Negro were detected for the chloroplast sequences and nuclear microsatellites, for both C. villosum and C. microcarpum. Although the two analysed sequences showed a sharp topology difference, both indicated that multiple lineages may have contributed to the origin of C. microcarpum populations in the Rio Negro basin. Nevertheless, for C. villosum, from terra firme, the results obtained may provide evidence of a recent expansion of one maternal lineage from an ancient relic population surviving in one of the few moist forest refuges of the Guiana Shield during extended droughts of the glacial periods. Wallace's riverine barrier hypothesis postulates that large rivers, such as the Amazon and its tributaries, reduce or prevent gene flow between populations on opposite banks, leading to allopatry and areas of species endemism occupying interfluvial regions. Several studies have shown that two major tributaries, Rio Branco and Rio Negro, are important barriers to gene flow for birds, amphibians and primates. No botanical studies have considered the potential role of the Rio Branco as a barrier, while a single botanical study has evaluated the Rio Negro as a barrier. We studied an Amazon shrub, Amphirrhox longifolia (A. St.‐Hil.) Spreng (Violaceae), as a model to test the riverine barrier hypothesis. Twenty‐six populations of A. longifolia were sampled on both banks of the Rio Branco and Rio Negro in the core Amazon Basin. Double‐digest RADseq was used to identify 8,010 unlinked SNP markers from the nuclear genome of 156 individuals. Data relating to population structure support the hypothesis that the Rio Negro acted as a significant genetic barrier for A. longifolia. On the other hand, no genetic differentiation was detected among populations spanning the narrower Rio Branco, which is a tributary of the Rio Negro. This study shows that the strength of riverine barriers for Amazon plants is dependent on the width of the river separating populations and species‐specific dispersal traits. Future studies of plants with contrasting life history traits will further improve our understanding of the landscape genetics and allopatric speciation history of Amazon plant diversity.  相似文献

The rummy‐nose tetra, Hemigrammus bleheri, is a small fish found in forest streams of the Rio Negro floodplain, central Amazonia. This species is popular in aquaria and used as an ornamental fishery resource by the riverine people from middle Rio Negro. Here we describe eight microsatellite DNA loci for rummy‐nose tetras. Number of alleles and heterozygosity per locus in a sample of 30 fish ranged from five to 22 and from 0.52 to 0.96, respectively. These highly variable genetic markers provide important tools for investigating population history and identifying conservation units in rummy‐nose tetras.  相似文献

In the Amazon river system, the source of the large quantity of CO2 evading from river surfaces remains unidentified. Photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) into dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) is a promising candidate. Few studies in the Amazon river system, and river systems in general, have attempted to quantify the contribution of these specific photoproducts to CO2 evasion. We conducted photochemical degradation and 14C addition experiments to measure the rate of production and the impact on bacterial metabolism, respectively, in the black water Rio Negro and in the white water Rio Solimões during low water. We found statistically significant production of both photoproducts in the Rio Negro and none in Rio Solimões. We also found that two photochemically produced LMWOAs??acetic and formic acid??may play a significant role in bacterial metabolism in both rivers. Based on our experimental results, we estimate that photochemically produced CO2, acetic acid and formic acid alone contribute to only 0.5% of the CO2 evading from the Rio Negro. Due to our experimental set-up, analytical methods and time of sampling, we caution that our estimate is very conservative. More extensive research is needed before drawing conclusions on the contribution of photochemistry to CO2 evasion from river surfaces of the Amazon basin.  相似文献

The blackwing hatchetfish, Carnegiella marthae, is a small characin species distributed in forest streams of the Negro and upper Orinoco River basins in Amazonia. Freshwater hatchetfish are popular in the aquarium trade and represent an economic resource for the riverine people from middle Rio Negro, in Brazil. We isolated and characterized seven microsatellite DNA loci for the blackwing hatchetfish. Number of alleles and heterozygosity per locus in a sample of 30 fish ranged from three to 17 and from 0.19 to 0.87, respectively. These microsatellite loci provide powerful markers for studies on taxonomy, management and phylogeographic history of Amazonian hatchetfish.  相似文献

Summary Studies were carried out in Central-Amazonian inundation forests having seasonal inundations during the emersion phase (e.p.) and the submersion phase (s.p.). Two várzea forests (white water areas), one in the Amazon valley on Ilha de Curarí and one at Lago Janauarí, and an igapó (black water area) situated in the Rio Negro valley at Rio Tarumã Mirím were investigated. A community analysis consisting of the species diversity and species similarity of the aquatic and terrestrial soil fauna was executed in these forests. Each forest is differentiated into an inner, middle, and outer part. The annual development of the soil invertebrates is dictated by the periodic changes in water level. Data on species diversity indicate an alternate occurrence of the soil- and trunk-dwelling carabids and staphylinids (Coleoptera). Low species diversity is obtained for the aquatic soil fauna during the high water period. This is correlated with both oxygen concentration and relative abundance of a few specialized species.A function model approach was tried. Investigations showed that both the phytophages and the saprophages consumed about 9.4% and 13% respectively of the yearly litter fall. Litter decomposition is retarded during the inundation period (170 g·m-2·s.p.-1 is decomposed) but is accelerated during the emersion phase (420 g·m-2·e.p.-1 is decomposed). Nearly 14% of the yearly litter fall is presumed to be exported by the current from the inundation forest during the inundation phase, probably into the surrounding rivers and lakes. A rough estimation of a nutrient budget containing some selected elements was given. The estimation allowed us to suppose, that in the igapó the loss of some elements cannot be compensated for by the input from the river water and the precipitation. Unlike the igapó, the várzea forest may compensate for this loss of litter through input of nutrients from the inflowing white water. The igapó may thus be considered as a source of nutrients while the várzea forest is a nutrient sink.  相似文献

In order to study the interactions of green lacewings toxocenosis on natural ecossystems, samplings were carried out in the Parque Ecológico Quedas do Rio Bonito, located in Lavras, Alto Rio Grande region, South of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species inventory was accomplished in two vegetation types: semi-evergreen forest and open field formations, including areas of montane grassland, rocky montane grassland and "cerrado". Insects were captured with a butterfly net during 2h, walking through each vegetation formation. Sampling resulted in 1,948 specimens belonging to 30 species, of which 14 were Chrysopini and 16 Leucochrysini. Representatives of these tribes were observed both in forest and in open field formations. Species of the genera Ceraeochrysa, Chrysoperla, Chrysopodes, Plesiochrysa and Leucochrysa were found in forests and in open field formations, except for Plesiochrysa. The highest richness and diversity of species were observed in the forest. The similarity index among the communities of green lacewings in the studied areas was 27%.  相似文献

Use of Terra Firme Forest by Caicubi Caboclos, Middle Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil. A Quantitative Study. An ethnobotanical study was carried out with caboclos from the village of Caicubi, Roraima State, Brazil. This village is located between the Rio Negro and Rio Branco. The data were collected in 1 ha of terra firme forest and involved caboclo knowledge of the tree species with individuals dbh ≥ 10 cm. A total of 11 informants between 34 to 74 years of age were interviewed. The caboclos used 185 (98%) of the 189 species analyzed. The family with the highest use value for the community was Arecaceae. The species with the highest use value was Bertholletia excelsa. Arecaceae, Lecythidaceae, and Sapotaceae showed a wide variety of uses. The uses were grouped into eight categories; those with the highest use values were firewood, technology, and construction. The mean use value for species was 1.6. The most intensely used resources in the forest were wood, leaves, spines, and exudates.  相似文献

Rio Negro Country (40 degrees 48'-40 degrees 50' South lat.; 73 degrees 12'-73 degrees 13' West long.), is located in the province of Osorno, South of Chile. It has a population of 18,031 inhabitants, with 39% in rural areas. The basic economic activity is cattle raising (cows, pigs). According to reports, prevalence of human hydatidosis in 1988 was 11.1 per 100,000. In order to contribute to a better knowledge of human hydatidosis in Rio Negro County, an indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) was performed to 509 randomized persons. Despite the importance of rivers in Amazonian biogeography, avian distribution patterns in river‐created habitats (i.e., floodplain forests) have been sparsely addressed. Here, we explore geographic variation in floodplain forest avifaunas, specifically regarding one of the most striking aspects of the Amazon: the diversity of river “colors” (i.e., types, based on the color of the water). We sampled the avifauna at 30 sites, located in 17 different rivers (nine black‐ and eight whitewater), in the Rio Negro basin, northwestern Brazil. Our sampling comprised ten 15‐min point‐counts per site, distributed every 500–1000 m along the river. We recorded a total of 352 bird species, many of which occurred in both river types. Although bird species richness was similar among rivers, we found significant differences in species composition. Nearly 14 percent of the species were significantly associated with one or the other river type. Most floodplain forest specialists occurred predominantly in whitewater rivers, whereas species that are typically associated with white‐sand habitats occurred in blackwater. Despite significant distinctions between river types, occurrence patterns and levels of habitat association differed among indicator species and may vary in the same species throughout its global distribution. There were also “intermediate” avifauna in some of our sites, suggesting that continuous parameters characterizing river types structure species turnover. The water color‐based classification of Amazonian rivers represents a simple and powerful predictor of the floodplain forest avifauna, offering a stimulating starting point for understanding patterns of floodplain bird distributions and for prioritizing conservation efforts in these overlooked habitats. We compared the relative contribution of blackwater inundation forest (igapó) and unflooded (terra firme) forest for regional bird species diversity in the lower Rio Negro region. For analyses of habitat preference we used mist-net samples and an unpublished bird species check-list. The igapó forest had lower bird species diversity than the terra firme forest. However, some 14% of the forest bird species in the region are restricted to igapó forest. Species composition was found to be distinct between the understories of the two forest types. Common forest bird guilds in the Neotropics such as ant-following birds avoid igapó forest. The differential habitat selection among birds in the inundated and unflooded forest is likely to result from vegetation structure and biological interactions such as aggressive behaviour. Since the inundated forest has a typical biota, conservation efforts needs to be directed to protect these habitats. Unfortunately, inundation forests are threatened by several human actions, especially dam construction. The extent of protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon is insufficient for the adequate protection of the inundated habitats, because it includes only 3% of the total area.  相似文献
