Abstract. In Y-tube olfactometer tests, Aphidius ervi Hal., Trioxys sp., Praon sp., Aphelinus flavus (Nees), Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marsh.) and Aphidius rophalosiphi De Stef. responded positively to the odour of the plant on which aphid mummies containing them had been collected. The response to host plant odour was greater than the response to the odour of host aphids, their honeydew or a combination of the two. The strongest response was to a combination of plant and host aphids. A. rhopalosiphi showed a strong positive response to three wheat volatiles (cis-3-hexenyl acetate, cis-3-hexen-1-ol and trans-2-hexenal) as well as to indole-3-acetaldehyde (a breakdown product of tryptophan in aphid honeydew). In both olfactometer tests with odours and choice trials with whole plants, newly emerged A. rhopalosiphi distinguished and preferred the variety of wheat on which their development had occurred to other wheat varieties.  相似文献

Abstract Glasshouse and laboratory experiments were conducted with Aphidius rhopalosiphi parasitizing Metopolophium dirhodum to test whether the presence in the same environment of another plant species (tomato or marigold) induced aerial allelopathy in wheat plants.
Emerging parasitoids were offered the choice of two odours of wheat plants in an olfactometer – wheat grown alone and wheat grown in the presence of the second plant species.
Female parasitoids responded more strongly than males, but both sexes preferred the odour of wheat grown in the environment in which they had developed (i.e. with or without the second plant species present).
Moving the tomato plants from the cages where they had been placed with wheat to the cages that had previously had wheat alone just before the aphid mummy formed showed that the odour environment the emerging parasitoid responded to was that of the mummy rather than that of the developing parasitoid larva. From this it was concluded that the parasitoids in the olfactometer were responding not only to wheat volatiles, but also to tomato volatiles absorbed on the surface of the mummy and encountered by the emerging adult parasitoid.
By excising the parasitoid pupa from the mummy formed on one wheat cultivar, and offering the emerging parasitoids the surface of aphid mummies formed on a different cultivar, it was confirmed that olfactometer responses represented a learning of the chemistry of the surface of the mummy encountered at or after emergence.  相似文献

Cage experiments, in which the population increase of Metopolophium dirhodum was measured either in the absence or presence of the parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi, showed reductions of peak populations in the presence of the parasitoid of 30% on the susceptible wheat cultivar Armada, but of 57% on the partially resistant Rapier. On both cultivars, aphid population curves in the presence and absence of the parasitoid diverged before the first mummies were formed. The number of aphids leaving plants was measured, and was found to increase in the presence of the parasitoid, particularly with Rapier (almost double). Most aphids (about 75%) which left plants fell, and a smaller proportion regained plants when parasitoids were present than when they were absent. A field experiment with Brevicoryne brassicae and natural predation on Brussels sprouts also showed an increase in aphids leaving a less susceptible compared with a more susceptible cultivar.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A study of searching behaviour on wheat and host preference of Aphidius rhopalosiphi (DeStefani-Perez) is described.
2. Parasitoids divided their time equally between the leaves but spent very little time on the ear.
3. After contact with honeydew or an aphid host, parasitoids were arrested in a particular area and increased the time spent searching.
4. Aphids feeding on the ear were parasitized less successfully, since their position between the grains protected them from parasitoid attacks.
5. A.rhopalosiphi exhibited no preference for Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) or Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), although the handling time for the latter was significantly longer; this resulted in fewer S.avenae being parasitized when it was abundant. Parasitoids did not switch between hosts in these experiments.
6. As a result of its searching behaviour, A.rhopalosiphi will encounter and parasitize M.dirhodum feeding on the leaves more frequently than S.avenae, which feeds on the ear. This will limit the parasitoid's ability to regulate populations of the cereal aphid S. avenae.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Metopolophium dirhodum were studied on winter wheat seedlings at constant (10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C and 30°C) and fluctuating (12(night)-22(day)°C) temperatures, and during booting to early inflorescence, and anthesis to early milky ripe stage, at 19°C. The pre-reproductive development time was decreased by increasing the temperature from 10°C to 25°C. It was significantly shorter when the aphids were feeding during booting to early inflorescence than during anthesis to early milky ripe stage but was similar when the aphids were feeding on the flag, second or third leaves. The total number of nymphs produced/apterous adult was not significantly affected by temperature from 10°C to 25°C but adult reproductive lifespan was reduced by increasing temperature from 10°C and 12–22°C to 15°C, 20°C and 25°C. The daily intrinsic rate of increase changed from 0.11 to 0.25, and the cohort generation time decreased from 31 to 12 days, with increase of temperature from 10°C to 25°C. Reproductive rate was similar when the aphids were feeding on the flag, second or third leaves during booting to early inflorescence at 19°C. The reproductive rate was higher when the aphids fed from mid-inflorescence to mid-milky ripe stage than from mid-milky to early ripe stage. These results were compared with those from other studies. Predictions from a simulation model using development and reproductive rates from this study and literature were compared and the former rates resulted in a more accurate prediction of field observations in 1979, an outbreak year.  相似文献

Abstract. The offspring of parasitoids, Aphidius colemani Viereck, reared on Brussels sprouts and emerging from Myzus persicae Sulzer on a fully defined artificial diet, show no preferences in a four-way olfactometer, either for the odour of the diet, the odour of Brussels sprouts, or the odour of two other crucifers (cabbage and Chinese cabbage). A similar lack of odour preferences is shown when the host aphids are exposed for parasitization (for 48 h) on cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat. However, if parasitization occurs on Brussels sprouts, a weak but statistically highly significant response to Brussels sprout odour is observed. Although as many as 30–35% of the parasitoids show no response to any odour, another 35% respond positively to the odour of Brussels sprout compared with responses to the odours of cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat of only approximately 10%. An analagous result is obtained when the parent parasitoids are reared on cabbage. In this case, significant positive responses of their offspring to cabbage odour occur only if the 48-h parasitization has occurred also on cabbage. However, with parasitoids from Brussels sprouts parasitizing the aphids for 48 h also on Brussels sprouts, the offspring subsequently emerging from pupae excised from the mummies show no preference for Brussels sprout odour. Thus, although the Brussels sprout cue had been experienced early in the development of the parasitoids, they only become conditioned to it when emerging from the mummy. Both male and female parasitoids respond very similarly in all experiments. It is proposed that the chemical cue (probably glucosinolates in these experiments) is most likely in the silk surrounding the parasitoid pupa, and that the mother may leave the chemical in or around the egg at oviposition, inducing chemical defences in her offspring to the secondary plant compounds that the offspring are likely to encounter.  相似文献

1. Host discrimination by Aphidius rhopalosiphi (De Stefani Perez) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was first studied on the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera: Aphididae). Females tended to avoid oviposition in hosts parasitised 3 h earlier. No evidence of host discrimination ability on freshly parasitised hosts was suggested, however, and ovipositional experience had no effect on host discrimination. 2. The effects of host discrimination ability on the exploitation strategy of patches containing different proportions of unparasitised hosts and hosts parasitised for 3 h were studied. Females spent less time on patches with a higher proportion of parasitised hosts, reflecting the females' ability to perceive the potential profitability of the patch. This ability may be based on the nature of the hosts encountered (unparasitised or parasitised). 3. Incomplete exploitation of unparasitised hosts was also observed. It seems that this partial exploitation is related to the inability of A. rhopalosiphi to recognise freshly parasitised hosts. As a female may experience a risk of self‐superparasitism during patch depletion, this could promote early departure from incompletely exploited patches. 4. The effect of previous experience on the patch exploitation strategy was also assessed. Females were tested twice on two patches of the same quality. Results suggested that the experience acquired during a previous visit led the females to leave the patch sooner and to lay fewer eggs in parasitised hosts. 5. Patch exploitation strategy may therefore be the result of different factors such as host discrimination and experience. The evolutionary consequences of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. In Y-tube olfactometer tests, female Cotesia plutellae Kurdjmov (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a major parasitoid of Plutella xylostella (L.) in southeast Asia, preferred the odour of the brassica type (Blue Lake cabbage) on which they had developed.Such plants were even preferred to the odour of caterpillar-infested and damaged leaves of another brassica (Early Phenomenal cauliflower).However, within one brassica type, the odour of caterpillar-infested leaves was preferred to that of uninfested and undamaged leaves.Odours of both Blue Lake and Early Phenomenal were preferred to the control odour (water).However, following the transfer of the parasitoid from Blue Lake to another cabbage (Brunswick) for one generation, females no longer distinguished between Blue Lake and Early Phenomenal.  相似文献

The impact of parasitoids on pests varies between conventional and low‐intensity agricultural systems. Although the impacts on parasitoid natural enemies of many practices within these agricultural systems are well understood, the role of fertilisers has been less well studied. The effects of organic‐based and conventional fertilisers on Hordeum vulgare L. (Poaceae), the aphid Metopolophium dirhodum Walker (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and its parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was investigated using cage release experiments and measures of aphid and parasitoid fitness were taken. Barley tiller number and aphid weight were increased by fertilisers, particularly under conventional treatments. Adult parasitoid size correlated positively with that of the host, M. dirhodum, whereas percentage parasitism was not affected by fertiliser treatment or host size. The results suggest that the increased parasitoid impact observed in some low‐intensity or organic systems is not a direct result of fertiliser treatment. Our results indicate that fertiliser treatments that improve cereal‐aphid fitness will improve parasitoid fitness as measured by parasitoid size but may not influence percentage parasitism.  相似文献

1. Concerns about climate change often trigger the question whether physiological and behavioural responses of species will enable them to persist. However, species do not exist alone and are largely dependent on interactions with others within communities. 2. In the present study, a mechanistic approach is used to test the hypothesis that inter‐specific differences in metabolic response to unpredictable short‐term thermal changes can change the outcome of host–parasitoid behavioural interactions. 3. The effect of a drop or a rise of 5 °C on resting metabolic rates (RMR) of the main aphid pest of cereal crops in Western Europe, the host Sitobion avenae Fabricius and its main natural enemy, the parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani‐Perez was measured. Also, defence and attack behaviours were measured for host and parasitoid separately as well as in interaction, since behavioural strategies of both species largely determine parasitism success. 4. The results showed that, when no change in temperature occurred, parasitoids had the highest oviposition rate. However, only with a rise of temperature behavioural interactions were disrupted: the parasitoid attack rate decreased whereas the aphid defence rate increased. This alteration in behaviour was associated with a stronger thermal response of RMR in hosts than in parasitoids, suggesting that species‐specific thermal responses of RMR could give valuable information on changes in the outcome of species interactions under warm spells but not under cold ones. 5. It was shown that relatively modest thermal changes with non‐lethal effects can have profound consequences for interacting co‐evolved species which may affect ecosystem services, such as biological control of pest populations.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that early maturation of barley affords it some resistance to cereal aphids, the colonisation, survival, growth, reproduction and emigration of M. dirhodum on barley was measured and compared with previously published results for this aphid on wheat.
Barley plants were colonised as readily as wheat plants. Survival to maturity was similar on both hosts. Relative growth rate was higher on wheat than on barley for most of the season while reproduction was similar on both. Emigration, measured alate production, was significantly higher on mature wheat than on mature barley.
It is proposed that the increase of M. dirhodum populations on barley is normally terminated early in the year directly plant maturation and consequent drying out of the leaves, resulting in the death of aphids. This is different to the situation on wheat, which matures later, and where emigration following plant induced alate induction has been shown to be the major factor affecting the decline in population growth.
These results support the hypothesis that early maturation of barley provides some resistance to M. dirhodum.  相似文献

  • 2 We conducted a 2‐year field study investigating the effects of organic slow‐release and conventional fertilizers on cereal aphids, hymenopteran parasitoids and syrphid predators and considered how the effects of fertilizers on barley morphology and colour might influence these species.
  • 3 Barley yield was greater in conventionally fertilized pots. Barley morphology was also affected by treatment: vegetative growth was greater under conventional treatments. Barley receiving organic fertilizers or no fertilizer was visually more attractive to aphids compared with plants receiving conventional fertilizers.
  • 4 Aphids were more abundant in conventionally fertilized barley but the reason for this increased abundance was species specific. Metopolophium dirhodum was responding to fertilizer effects on plant morphology, whereas Rhopalosiphum padi was sensitive to the temporal availability of nutrients.
  • 5 Syrphid eggs were more numerous in conventionally fertilized pots, whereas the response of parasitoids appeared to be dependent on the abundance of aphids, although the number of parasitoid mummies was low in both years.
  • 6 This research shows that the fertilizer treatment used can affect numerous characteristics of plant growth and colour, which can then influence higher trophic levels. This knowledge might be used to make more informed fertilizer application choices.

In field experiments apterous Metopolophium dirhodum produced significantly more alatae when reared on mature plants (milky ripe stage) than on young plants. Nymphal and adult survival and relative growth rate were little affected by the developmental stage of the host plant. Relative growth rate and fecundity were strongly related to temperature. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the developmental stage of wheat had no significant effect on survival or relative growth rate of the aphids. However, laboratory grown plants did not produce the levels of alate production seen in field crops and in the field experiments. It is suggested that in investigations into the effects of the host plant on cereal aphids field grown plants should be used whenever possible. Alate production is proposed as the major plant induced factor affecting the development of M. dirhodum populations on wheat in the field. Alatae developed on mature plants even when the number of aphids was very low.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The behavioural mechanisms limiting superparasitism by Aphidius rhopalosiphi (DeStefani-Perez) are described.
2. A.rhopalosiphi did not discriminate between parasitized and unparasitized aphids, or avoid attacking and ovipositing in previously parasitized aphids.
3. Aphid defensive behaviour was increased for a short period after a parasite stabbing attack. In response to this behaviour the number of parasite stabbing attacks subsequently undertaken declined.
4. Once a stabbing attack had been initiated, parasite oviposition success was unaffected by aphid defensive behaviour.
5. It is concluded that applied defensive behaviour, by limiting the number of stabbing attacks undertaken by A.rhopalusiphi , effectively limits the number of parasite eggs laid and the extent to which super parasitism occurs.  相似文献

Abstract

Spring populations of Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on barley, at Lincoln and elsewhere in Canterbury, New Zealand, declined markedly during 1984–87. Spring suction-trap catches of M. dirhodum also declined at the same time. Numbers of immigrant M. dirhodum on young barley, and maximum aphid population density on the crop, were positively correlated with suction-trap catches of M. dirhodum during the preceding week or month, respectively. Egg numbers of the most abundant predator, Micromus tasmaniae Walker (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae), and mummy numbers of the parasitoid, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), increased relative to aphid numbers during the study. Entomophagous fungus-disease incidence could not be related to monthly rainfall, and the decline in aphid numbers during the study period was apparently not related to disease incidence. It is suggested that aphid population regulation by predators and parasitoids in the wider habitat of M. dirhodum could reduce the rate of immigration, and hence aphid population growth, in a given crop.  相似文献

Samples of the grain aphid Sitobion avenue (F.) and the rose-grain aphid Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) were collected in late March from wheat fields and adjacent road-side grasses at a number of locations in southern England. Unparasitized aphids were DNA fingerprinted using the multilocus (GATA)4 probe. Over all locations, the fingerprints of individual S. avenue caught in wheat had lower overall average distances of band migration (ADBM) and shared a higher proportion of bands, than fingerprints of individuals caught in adjacent road-side grasses. The ADBM of fingerprints of S. avenue collected on road-side grasses altered significantly with geographical location, while the ADBM of fingerprints of S. avenue caught on wheat did not. A comparison of the fingerprints of individual M. dirhodum caught in wheat and neighbouring road-side grasses did not reveal any genetic differentiation. Fingerprints of M. dirhodum that were caught in the same host type did however, show significant variation in ADBM between different locations. With both S. avenue and M. dirhodum, spatial autocorrelation revealed that locations that were close together were no more likely to have individuals with similar ADBM than locations mat were far apart Our results suggest that (i) particular clones of S. avenue prefer to colonize wheat; and/or that (ii) particular clones of S. avenae perform better on wheat man other clones. It is unclear why M. dirhodum did not show any genetic structuring according to host type, but this species appears to engage in sexual reproduction much more frequently than S. avenae in southern England. M. dirhodum is likely to have displayed genetic heterogeneity between locations either because of founder effects, or because of genetic drift.  相似文献

Field experiments on the use of recommended and reduced application rates of aphicides for control of summer aphid infestations on winter wheat have been done at five sites each year from 1990 to 1992. The experiment compared sprays of pirimicarb at recommended rate (140g a.i. ha-1) and reduced rate (25 g a.i. ha-1) and of alphacypermethrin at recommended rate (15 g a.i. ha-1) and one third recommended rate (5 g a.i. ha-1), each applied either at flag leaf emergence or at flowering. Aphid infestations were allowed to develop naturally and were measured at critical growth stages. In 1990, overwintered aphid infestations, together with established populations of parasitoids, were detected at four of the five sites when the first assessment was made in April. Parasitoids provided sufficient aphid control to prevent yield loss at two sites, without pesticide applications. At three sites both aphicides gave similar levels of control and yield response at both recommended and reduced application rates. In 1991 and 1992 no overwintered aphids were detected in the crops and aphid infestations developed much later. Aphicide applications gave significant yield responses at four sites in 1992. Recommended rates gave better control of aphids than reduced rates. There was no significant difference in the yield response obtained with different rates of aphicide.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertiliser on populations of the cereal aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum on winter wheat was investigated in a three year field experiment. Naturally occurring aphid populations were monitored on three nitrogen treatments; none, nitrogen application using Canopy Management guidelines (130–210 kg ha-1) and conventional practice (190 kg ha-1). Inoculations of laboratory reared S. avenae were used to enhance field populations on half the plots. Natural populations of M. dirhodum remained below the current UK spray threshold level of two-thirds of shoots infested at the start of flowering, or five aphids per shoot in all years, whilst populations of S. avenae exceeded the threshold in all years. The response of the two species to nitrogen differed. Significantly higher populations of M. dirhodum were recorded in both treatments which received nitrogen in all years, whilst the response of S. avenae varied between years. In 1994 and 1995 when environmental conditions favoured aphid development, higher populations were recorded in the two treatments which received nitrogen. In 1993 when high rainfall created unfavourable conditions, higher populations were recorded in the plots receiving no nitrogen. Differences in peak density and cumulative aphid index of S. avenae resulted from differences in the rate of population increase between ear emergence and peak density on the different treatments. Populations prior to ear emergence were higher in the plots which received nitrogen but the differences were not statistically significant. There was no evidence of a difference in the timing of population decline in the different treatments. In 1993 higher levels of infection by entomopathogenic fungi were observed in all treatments. Significantly higher levels of infection were recorded in the treatments receiving nitrogen, which may have accounted for the lower S. avenae populations recorded. It is possible that the larger canopies recorded in these treatments produced conditions which favoured infection by fungi, thereby limiting aphid population growth. The results indicate that application of nitrogen increases natural populations of M. dirhodum, and under favourable conditions, populations of S. avenae. However, in suboptimal climatic conditions, the application of nitrogen fertiliser can lead to lower populations of 5. avenae. The data also suggest that there is no consistent difference between a conventional and Canopy Managed approach to nitrogen fertiliser use in terms of the risk of infestation by cereal aphids.  相似文献
