Studies on the vertical distribution of marine fungi in aRhizophora apiculata mangrove stand in Morib, Selangor were carried out in June 1993 and June to November 1997. Prop roots, subterranean roots and overhanging branches ofR. apiculata were collected from three intertidal levels namely upper (high water mark), middle and lower. Fifty-three species were recorded including 39 ascomycetes, 13 deuteromycetes and one basidiomycete. The most common fungi wereHalocyphina villosa (frequency occurrence 21%),Kallichroma tethys (20%),Lulworthia grandispora (18%),Leptosphaeria australiensis (16%),Julella avicenniae (15%) andMassarina ramunculicola (13%). The fungi were found to be vertically zoned, some were limited to the upper level such asPyrenographa xylographoides, Julella avicenniae andAigialus grandis or lower level such asTrichocladium achrasporum andT. alopallonellum, while only five species showed a broader distribution, being present at all levels:Leptosphaeria australiensis, Halocyphina villosa, Cryptovalsa sp.,Lulworthia grandispora andLulworthia sp. The greatest diversity of marine fungi were collected from the middle level with a Shannon Diversity Index of 5.9 while the Jaccard Similarity Index of 2.25 indicated that the upper and middle levels were the most similar in terms of species composition. Fungi with certain characteristics were also limited to particular levels, for example, carbonaceous and superficial ascomata were confined above mean tide while membranous walls and immersed ascomata were common below mean tide level.  相似文献

Soil characteristics of mangrove forests at Amphur Laemngob, Trat Province, east Thailand were investigated in both dry andrainy seasons. Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba andRhizophora mucronata mainly grew as seaward mangroves.Rhizophora apiculata, Ceriops tagal, Excoecaria agallocha andBruguiera gymnorrhiza grew as meso mangroves in most cases.Lumnitzera racemosa was found as a landward mangrove. The salinity of the soil in which these 8 species grew was significantly higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. Soil pH did not change irrespective of the season. Each species seemed to grow at inherent soil pH. Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Sonneratia alba andAvicennia marina were found both in Japan and Thailand. The soil pH of each mangrove species was similar in Japan and Thailand. The soil salinity of each mangrove species in Japan was similar to that in Thailand in the dry season. It was suggested that soil pH and salinity in the dry season are the important factors governing the zonal distribution of mangroves.  相似文献

Soil conditions of mangrove forests in southern Japan were found to correlate largely with zonal distributions of the species.Kandelia candel grew in soils with low salinity and low pH,Avicennia marina, Rhizophora stylosa andSonneratia alba in soils with high salinity and high pH, andBruguiera gymnorrhiza in soil with a wide range of pH but limited range of salinity.Lumnitzera racemosa colonized soil with a wide range of pH and medium salinity. Seedlings ofKandelia candel, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza andRhizophora stylosa were planted in soils with differing salinity and pH. Optimum seedling growth ofKandelia, Bruguiera andRhizophora occurred when plants were cultivated in soils similar to those of their natural habitats, suggesting that growth of mangrove species and their zonal distributions were regulated by salinity and soil pH.  相似文献

Fungi associated with the decomposition of Nypa fruticans in Malaysia are under investigation. Forty-one fungi have been identified including 35 ascomycetes, four mitosporic fungi and two basidiomycetes. The distribution of intertidal fungi on palm structures including leaves, leaf veins, rachides, petiole bases, and inflorescences, and fungi on terrestrial parts have also been examined. No fungi were found on the leaf material, although several fungi were found on the leaf midribs, and possible reasons for this are given. Very few taxa developed on the inflorescences, but those that were present were abundant. The greatest density of fruiting structures occurred on the rachides, and the greatest diversity of fungal species occurred on the petiole bases. The terrestrial fungi differed from the intertidal fungi, although Linocarpon nipae occurred in both habitats. Reasons for the differences in fungal numbers and diversity on the various palm parts are discussed. The diversity of fungi at Morib mangrove was low when compared to previous studies on fungi on Nypa palm at Kampong Api Api in Brunei and in this study at Kuala Selangor mangrove in Malaysia.  相似文献

Summary Although insects are known to be important seed predators in most terrestrial forests, their role in marine tidal (mangrove) forests has not been examined. Surveys at 12 sites in tropical Australia showed that between 3.1 and 92.7 percent of the seeds or propagules of 12 mangrove tree species had been attacked by insects. Seeds/propagules of six species (Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, B. parviflora, Heritiera littoralis, Xylocarpus australasicus and X. granatum) showed consistently high (>40%) levels of insect damage. Greater than 99% of H. littoralis seeds were attacked by insect predators. The survival and subsequent growth in height and biomass of insect-damaged and non-damaged control seeds/propagules of eight mangrove species were compared in shadehouse experiments. Mangrove species fell into 4 groups with regard to the effect of insect predators on their seeds and seedlings. Xylocarpus australasicus and X. granatum had significantly decreased survival (X 48 and 70%) and growth in height (X 61 and 96%) and biomass (X 66 and 85%). Bruguiera parviflora showed decreased survival (X 59%), but there was no effect of insects on the growth of surviving propagules. In contrast, there was no effect of insect damage on the survival of seedlings of Avicennia marina and Bruguiera exaristata, but decreased growth in height (X 22 and 25%) and biomass (X 22 and 26%). Survival and growth of seedlings of Rhizophora stylosa and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza were not affected. The influence of insect seed predators on the survival and growth of seeds of mangrove species in forests will depend on the relative abundance of seed-eating crabs and intertidal position in mangrove forests. This is Contribution No 499 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Growth and physiological responses of two mangrove species (Kandelia candel and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza) to livestock wastewater under two salinity conditions (seawater with salinity of 30þ and freshwater) were examined in greenhouse pot-cultivation systems for 144 days. Wastewater treatment significantly enhanced growth of Kandelia candel and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in terms of stem height, stem basal diameter, leaf production, maximum unit leaf area and relative growth rate. Wastewater discharges and salinity levels did not significantly change biomass partitioning of Kandelia candel, however, more biomass of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza was allocated to leaf due to wastewater discharges. In Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b increased with wastewater discharges but such increase was not observed in Kandelia candel. On the other hand, livestock wastewater increased leaf electric conductance in Kandelia candel but not in Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The peroxidase activity in stem and root of Kandelia candel under both salinity conditions increased due to wastewater discharges, while the activity in root of the treated Bruguiera gymnorrhiza seedlings decreased under freshwater condition but increased at seawater salinity. The superoxide dismutase activity in treated Bruguiera gymnorrhiza decreased but did not show any significant change in Kandelia candel receiving livestock wastewater.  相似文献

Forest structure and biomass were determined in a mangrove stand dominated by Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam. Trees in 5 m2 sample plots were harvested at ground level and then further cut into 1 m strata for separation into living wood, dead wood, leaves, reproductive material and pneumatophores. Mean above-ground living biomass was calculated at 94.49±7.83 t dry matter ha–1, while dead wood contributed a mean mass of 7.63±0.89 t dry matter ha–1. Excavations of roots yielded a below-ground biomass of 9.67 t dry matter ha–1 which represented only 9.8% of the above-ground value. There was a mean density of 4700 living stems ha–1 with plant heights ranging from 0.57 m to 5.80 m. Mean LAI was 4.95±0.80. As a basis for estimating standing biomass, regression lines were fitted to biomass values from individual trees of B. gymnorrhiza and Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. of various sizes. A comparison of these relationships with methods used by previous workers for estimating biomass suggests that most other methods cannot be applied without modification for local stands of mangroves.  相似文献

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza is an ecologically and somewhat economically important mangrove tree species. We isolated 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci from B. gymnorrhiza using a dual‐suppression polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. These loci provided microsatellite markers with polymorphism of two to five alleles per locus within 216 individuals from nine natural populations of B. gymnorrhiza on Iriomote Island, the Sakishima Islands, Japan. The expected and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.220 to 0.720 and from 0.104 to 0.447, respectively.  相似文献

The growth stages of Trebralia palustris can easily bedistinguished by the presence of a varix on the last whorl and the shape ofthe outer lip. In a T. palustris population in the mangal of IriomoteIsland, southern Japan, juveniles are the most abundant and sub-adults arethe least abundant. The mean size of sub-adults is not different from that ofadults in sites with similar environmental conditions, but the mean sizesdiffer in different life environments. Sub-adult and adult snails in awell-developed mangrove stand of Rhizophora stylosa and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza with rich food resources are larger than those in arather open stand of short Avicennia marina trees with comparativelypoor food resources. The size of snails positively affected some population traitssuch as fecundity and the grazing rate of mangrove litter.  相似文献

Mangrove reforestation projects often suffer from low sapling survival, especially after transplanting saplings from nurseries to reforestation areas. This may be due to the sediment conditions at the target site, the planting strategy or failure to re-establish ecosystem processes. We examined experimentally the influence of environmental context, species richness and identity, sapling height and position on sapling survival and environmental variables linked to ecosystem functioning at deforested sites in Gazi Bay, Kenya. At site 1, a high shore location, 32 plots (36 m2) were planted with 8 treatments: all possible combinations of Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and Ceriops tagal and an unplanted control (total: 3390 saplings; 4 plots/treatment). At site 2, a low shore location, the influence of sapling height, sapling position and sediment depth were tested by planting with 697 Sonneratia alba in a single monospecific plot (341 m2). After ∼2 years, there were significant differences in survival among the three species at site 1 with Bruguiera gymnorrhiza recording the lowest survival rate (29%). Survival was correlated with salinity (a strong effect) and height above chart datum (a weaker effect) at site 1. Sapling position did not significantly affect survival at either site. There was thus no evidence that early survival of transplanted saplings is influenced by the species mix in which they are grown, or by their position in the plot. Rather the tolerance of individual species to salinity was the key to their survival at the high tidal site. Species mix also had no significant effects on environmental variables in the plots. The former presence of a species at a site does not guarantee it will succeed there again if environmental degradation has exceeded species’ tolerance. Handling editor: T. P. Crowe  相似文献

Chloroplast microsatellite (cpSSR) markers were developed for three ecologically and economically important tree species in the mangrove family, Rhizophoraceae: Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Kandelia candel, and Rhizophora stylosa. Noncoding regions of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) from each species were separately amplified using universal chloroplast primers. Six, two, and three polymorphic cpSSR loci in B. gymnorrhiza, K. candel, and R. stylosa, respectively, were developed from amplified noncoding cpDNA regions. Characterization of 216, 156, and 253 individuals of B. gymnorrhiza, K. candel, and R. stylosa, respectively, collected from different natural mangrove populations (B. gymnorrhiza, 9; K. candel, 7; R. stylosa, 9) on Iriomote Island in Japan showed that these loci provide cpSSR markers with polymorphisms ranging from two to four alleles per locus and gene diversity between 0.027 and 0.480. These cpSSR markers will be useful for analyzing the maternal lineage distributions and population genetic structures of the three species. Several of these markers may also be useful in similar studies of other mangrove species.  相似文献

The growth and ascocarp formation of Aigialus parvus, Lignincola laevis and Verruculina enalia in single and mixed cultures on wood of Avicennia alba, Bruguiera cylindrica and Rhizophora apiculata was studied. In pure cultures, these fungi grew well on all three species of wood. Except for Aigialus parvus on B. cylindrica, all three fungi also formed abundant ascocarps. The time needed for ascocarp formation after inoculation ranged from six to eight weeks for L. laevis on all wood species, and for V. enalia on Avicennia alba; to ten weeks for V. enalia on B. cylindrica and R. apiculata; and 12 weeks for Aigialus parvus on Avicennia alba and R. apiculata.Mixed cultures involving two or three of the test fungi delayed the onset of sporulation and affected the abundance of ascocarps formed. Sporulation by Aigialus parvus on Avicennia alba and R. apiculata was markedly reduced by L. laevis alone or in combination with V. enalia. Likewise, sporulation by L. laevis was suppressed by Aigialus parvus and/or V. enalia. In contrast, the presence of L. laevis enhanced ascocarp formation by V. enalia on all types of wood. These observations suggest the presence of interference competition among the test fungi.  相似文献

Lipid composition of mangrove and its relevance to salt tolerance   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Lipid compositions of mangrove trees were studied in relation to the salt-tolerance mechanism. Leaves and roots were obtained from seven mature mangrove trees on Iriomote Island, Okinawa: Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora stylosa, Kandelia candel, Lumnitzera racemosa, Avicennia marina, Pemphis acidula and Sonneratia alba. Lipids of mangrove leaves mainly consisted of 11 lipid classes: polar lipids, unknown (UK) 1–6, sterols, triacyl glycerols, wax ester and sterol ester (UK 3 and 4 were found to be tri-terpenoid alcohol in this study). Of these lipid classes, sterol ester was the main lipid in all species comprising 17.6–33.7% of total lipids. Analysis of the chemical structure found that the sterol esters mainly consisted of fatty acid esters of tri-terpenoid alcohols. One major tri-terpenoid alcohol was identified to be lupeol by interpretation of infrared resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Because of the unique anatomy of the mangrove root, lipid analyses were made separately for epidermis, cortex and innermost stele, respectively. The concentration of free tri-terpenoid alcohols showed a higher tendency in the outside part than in the inside portion of the roots, suggesting their protective roles. Relevance of lipid composition to salt tolerance was studied with propagules of K. candel and B. gymnorrhiza planted with varied salt concentrations. The proportions of free tri-terpenoids increased with salinity in both leaves and roots of K. candel, and only in roots of B. gymnorrhiza. No salt-dependent changes were noted in the phospholipid and fatty acid compositions in both species. These findings suggested that salt stress specifically modulated the terpenoid concentrations in mangroves. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Mangrove plants, which develop highly productive forests on tropical–subtropical coastlines and river estuaries, rely mainly on river and sea water currents for their diaspore dispersal. Mangrove diaspores are basically dispersed in brackish to sea waters; thus whether they sink or float during the dispersal period could be changed dynamically, both spatially and temporally, depending on the salinity to which they are exposed, as well as on their specific gravity (SG). We found that the SG of diaspores of two mangrove species, Rhizophora stylosa and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, which are dominant species and form a typical zonation (B. gymnorrhiza in inland areas and R. stylosa in more seaward areas) in the study area, changed spatially and temporally. Bruguiera gymnorrhiza gradually lost its SG in accordance with elapsed time, while R. stylosa lost its SG in the first 6 h and gained gradually according to elapsed time. Hydrodynamic simulation of dispersal patterns, in combination with observed specific gravity changes of both diaspores and river water, demonstrated that the spatio‐temporal pattern of specific gravity change was closely related to the difference in dispersal behaviors between the species. The diaspore of B. gymnorrhiza generally disperses upstream, and covers wider ranges than that of R. stylosa, at least in the early phase of dispersal. These dispersal behaviors agreed well with the distribution pattern of the species across estuaries in the study site. To date, hydrochory has been considered to be a mostly passive process governed by the dynamics of water current and subsequent sediment movement, with fixed diaspore characteristics such as shape and buoyancy. The present study shed new light on an active and dynamic process in hydrochory and found that the buoyancy of diaspores may be controlled by changes in their spatial and temporal SG.  相似文献

The ellobiid Ellobium scheepmakeri (Petit de la Saussaye, 1850) is reported from the banks of the Selangor River estuary, 57 years after it was first collected in Peninsular Malaysia. It was found in abundance under logs in the dryland mangrove forest of a dominantly Nypa swamp at the upper reaches of the Kuala Selangor estuary where sediment pore water salinity was recorded at 6–7 ppt.  相似文献

Lignicolous material was collected from 5 marine locations in Brunei: a rocky headland, a sandy beach, a man-made brackish lake, a healthy mangrove and an oil polluted mangrove. Higher marine fungi present were identified and their percentage occurrence noted. The common marine fungi varied from habitat to habitat. Antennospora quadricornuta was most common at the rocky headland, Corollospora pulchella at the sandy beach and Halosarpheia marina at the brackish lake. In the mangroves the most common species were Halocyphina villosa (healthy) and Cirrenalia pygmea and Lulworthia grandispora (oil polluted). Differences in species composition from one habitat to the next were observed, although some fungi occurred throughout. There were significantly less diversity and numbers of fungi in the oil polluted mangrove when compared to the healthy mangrove. Observations concerning the ecology of tropical marine fungi are made.  相似文献

Species composition shifts in mangrove forests may alter organic matter dynamics. The purpose of this study was to predict the effect of species replacements among mangrove trees on organic matter dynamics in a mangrove forest on the island of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia. We were particularly interested in elements of the carbon cycle that affect peat accumulation rates, organic matter exports to the estuary and coral reef systems, and soil microbiology. We compared organic matter production and decomposition rates among three mangrove species that commonly grow in similar hydrogeomorphic settings: Rhizophora apiculata BL, which is selectively harvested; Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, which may gradually replace Rhizophora; and Sonneratia alba, which is producing few mature fruits. Sonneratia had significantly higher rates of root production (estimated with ingrowth chambers) than Bruguiera or Rhizophora. Sonneratia foliage had significantly faster decomposition rates and significantly lower lignin:nitrogen ratios than Bruguiera foliage. Live root mass was positively correlated with ingrowth and soil carbon, although soil carbon and ingrowth were not significantly correlated with each other. Humic acid concentrations were significantly higher in Sonneratia rhizospheres than in either Bruguiera or Rhizophora rhizospheres and were positively correlated with root ingrowth. The species changes taking place on Kosrae are likely to result in lower rates of root production and foliage decomposition, and more refractory carbon pools in soil.  相似文献

Two species of mangrove trees of Indo-Pacific origin have naturalized in tropical Atlantic mangrove forests in South Florida after they were planted and nurtured in botanic gardens. Two Bruguiera gymnorrhiza trees that were planted in the intertidal zone in 1940 have given rise to a population of at least 86 trees growing interspersed with native mangrove species Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans and Laguncularia racemosa along 100 m of shoreline; the population is expanding at a rate of 5.6% year−1. Molecular genetic analyses confirm very low genetic diversity, as expected from a population founded by two individuals. The maximum number of alleles at any locus was three, and we measured reduced heterozygosity compared to native-range populations. Lumnitzera racemosa was introduced multiple times during the 1960s and 1970s, it has spread rapidly into a forest composed of native R. mangle, A. germinans, Laguncularia racemosa and Conocarpus erectus and now occupies 60,500 m2 of mangrove forest with stem densities of 24,735 ha−1. We estimate the population growth rate of Lumnitzera racemosa to be between 17 and 23% year−1. Populations of both species of naturalized mangroves are dominated by young individuals. Given the long life and water-dispersed nature of propagules of the two exotic species, it is likely that they have spread beyond our survey area. We argue that the species-depauperate nature of tropical Atlantic mangrove forests and close taxonomic relatives in the more species-rich Indo-Pacific region result in the susceptibility of tropical Atlantic mangrove forests to invasion by Indo-Pacific mangrove species.  相似文献

Host specialization in highly diverse tropical forests may be limited by the low local abundance of suitable hosts. To address whether or not fungi in a low‐diversity tropical forest were released from this restriction, fruiting bodies of polypore basidiomycete fungi were collected from three species of mangroves (Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle) in a Caribbean mangrove forest in Panama. Unlike other tropical forests, the polypore assemblage in this mangrove forest was strongly dominated by a few host‐specialized species. Three fungal species, each with strong preference for a different mangrove host species, comprised 88 percent of all fungi collected.  相似文献
