Summary Two co-occurring high altitude calanoid copepods, Diaptomus shoshone Marsh and D. coloradensis Forbes are of different size: the former is approximately twice as long as the latter. There are also temporal differences in development: the former matures 2–3 weeks before the latter in most ponds. Gut analyses of copepodids and adults of both species indicate that D. shoshone eats larger food particles but that D. shoshone early copepodids eat particles similar in size to D. coloradensis adults. Morphology of feeding appendages partially explains the dietary differences. These data are discussed from the viewpoint of competition between the species; it is concluded that either temporal differences or size differences of copepodids and adults would allow coexistence and that extreme size differences are probably unimportant compared to morphological differences of feeding appendages and perhaps behavioral differences.Supported in part by a Tufts Faculty Research Award. 相似文献

Disease‐mediated threats posed by exotic species to native counterparts are not limited to introduced parasites alone, since exotic hosts frequently acquire native parasites with possible consequences for infection patterns in native hosts. Several biological and geographical factors are thought to explain both the richness of parasites in native hosts, and the invasion success of free‐living exotic species. However, the determinants of native parasite acquisition by exotic hosts remain unknown. Here, we investigated native parasite communities of exotic freshwater fish to determine which traits influence acquisition of native parasites by exotic hosts. Model selection suggested that five factors (total body length, time since introduction, phylogenetic relatedness to the native fish fauna, trophic level and native fish species richness) may be linked to native parasite acquisition by exotic fish, but 95% confidence intervals of coefficient estimates indicated these explained little of the variance in parasite richness. Based on R2‐values, weak positive relationships may exist only between the number of parasites acquired and either host size or time since introduction. Whilst our results suggest that factors influencing parasite richness in native host communities may be less important for exotic species, it seems that analyses of general ecological factors currently fail to adequately incorporate the physiological and immunological complexity of whether a given animal species will become a host for a new parasite. 相似文献

Abundances of two harpacticoid copepod species, Enhydrosoma littorale Wells and Zausodes c.f. arenicolus Wilson, were significantly higher in one of two adjacent subtidal, soft-bottom habitats in St. George Sound, Florida (29°54′N : 84°37′48′′W). For Enhydrosoma littorale, a laboratory-preference experiment indicated that sediment-related factors caused the observed distribution. In a series of preference experiments, differences between the sediments of the two habitats in granulometry and organic matter were shown not to account for the preference. Rather, the preference results from differences in the microbes attached to the sediment particles in the two areas. In contrast, Zausodes c.f. arenicolus did nol prefer sediments from its area of high field abundance in laboratory preference experiments, indicating that factors external to the sediment i.e. hydrographic conditions or biological interactions, were responsible for this species' distribution. 相似文献

Many bumblebee species have been suffering from significant declines across their ranges in the Northern Hemisphere over the last few decades. The remaining populations of the rare species are now often isolated due to habitat fragmentation and have reduced levels of genetic diversity. The persistence of these populations may be threatened by inbreeding depression, which may result in a higher susceptibility to parasites. Here we investigate the relationship between genetic diversity and prevalence of the parasitic mite Locustacarus buchneri in bumblebees, using the previously-studied system of Bombus muscorum and Bombus jonellus in the Western Isles of Scotland. We recorded L. buchneri prevalence in 17 populations of B. muscorum and 13 populations of B. jonellus and related the results to levels of heterozygosity. For B. muscorum, we found that prevalence of the mite was higher in populations with lower genetic diversity but there was no such relationship in the more genetically diverse B. jonellus. In contrast to population-level measures of genetic diversity, the heterozygosity of individual bees was not correlated with infection status. We suggest population-level genetic homogeneity may facilitate parasite transmission and elevate prevalence, with potential consequences for population persistence. 相似文献

Skistodiaptomus oregonensis and Leptodiaptomus minutus produce diapausing eggs in a large lake, Oneida Lake, in New York State. The timing of the switch from production of subitaneous (immediately hatching) eggs to diapausing eggs for both species is in October. This timing is consistent with a pattern, reviewed here, for other populations of diaptomid copepods: populations living in large lakes tend to begin production of diapausing eggs later in the season than those living in small lakes. Populations living in temporary ponds tend to switch still earlier in the season. All populations reviewed here live in the north temperate zone. The sediments of Oneida Lake contain densities of diaptomid diapausing eggs on the order of 105 m–2 per cm below the sediment surface down to 5 cm. Below this sediment depth, egg densities decline. The highest egg densities were found in sediments under the deepest water. Diapausing eggs of L. minutus survive in the sediments at least two years, as shown by the recovery of the population after a year in which no new diapausing eggs were produced, and probably for two or more decades. Long-term dormancy can have the effect of ensuring the continuation of a population through periods of poor recruitment, and can help create conditions for the coexistence of competing species. Unusual cultures of a Microsporum species were isolated from eleven patients who had either tinea capitis or tinea corporis or both. Although the macroconidia produced in the primary cultures resembled those of M. canis, hyphal morphology and colony characteristics were different from any of the more commonly occurring Microsporum species. Careful examination of subcultures showed that the isolates were composed of two species; M. canis and M. distortum, whose relationship remains enigmatic. 相似文献

The number of monogenean gill parasite species associated with fish hosts of different sizes is evaluated for 35 host individuals of the West African cyprinid Labeo coubie. The length of host individuals explains 86% of the total variation in monogenean species richness among individuals. Larger hosts harbour more species than smaller ones. The existence of a hierarchical association of parasite species in individuals of L. coubie is demonstrated. Monogenean infracommunities on larger fish hosts consist of all species found on smaller hosts plus those restricted to the larger size categories, suggesting some degree of compositional persistence among host individuals. The findings provide strong support for an interpretation of the relationship between monogenean parasite species richness and host body size in terms of a nested species subset pattern, thus providing a new record of repetitive structure and predictability for parasite infracommunities of hosts.After 15/01/1995, ORSTOM, BP 165 97323 Cayenne cedex Guyane France 相似文献

Co-infection of host organisms by multiple parasite species has evolutionary consequences for all participants in the symbiosis. In this study, we co-exposed aquatic-snails (Biomphalaria glabrata) to two of their trematode parasites, Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma caproni. In co-exposed snails, E. caproni prevalence was 63% compared to only 23% for S. mansoni. Co-exposed E. caproni-infected snails exhibited reduced fecundity, higher mortality, and higher parasite reproduction (higher virulence) compared to hosts exposed to echinostomes alone. Conversely, co-exposed S. mansoni-infected snails released fewer parasites and produced greater numbers of eggs compared to hosts exposed to S. mansoni alone. These results suggest that co-exposure not only influences the establishment (presence or absence) of particular parasite species, but also impacts host life history, parasite reproduction, and the virulence of the interaction. 相似文献

Host-parasite coevolution shapes the structure of communities and simultaneously the traits of the interacting species. Social parasites developed sophisticated chemical integration strategies to circumvent host defences. Here, we show that the two Leptothorax host species of the obligate social parasite Harpagoxenus sublaevis exhibit extremely divergent chemical profiles, making it nearly impossible for this parasite to closely adapt to both hosts at once. Our cuticular hydrocarbon analyses demonstrate that H. sublaevis acquires some host chemicals passively, but additionally, actively biosyntheses some host hydrocarbons. The parasite adjusts thereby more closely to its smaller host, L. muscorum, because it actively produces two of its cuticular substances and also more easily acquires the short-chained hydrocarbons of this host. Community composition analyses indicate that the social parasite overexploits this chemical closer host species and, albeit costly for the parasite, frequently enslaves workers of the second host concurrently. 相似文献

The effect of the variation of lipid droplet volume on individual carbon content was studied in two species of planktonic freshwater copepods, Eudiaptomus gracilis G.O. Sars and Thermocyclops oithonoides G.O. Sars. It was found, that when a multiple regression of carbon content on prosoma and lipid droplet volume instead of a simple regression of carbon content on prosoma volume was applied, the unexplainied variance of individual carbon content of Eudiaptomus gracilis could be reduced. However, the use of multiple regression on Thermocyclops oithonoides data did not lead to significantly higher coefficient of determination than was obtained by using a simple regression. 相似文献

The diversity of fish parasite life history strategies makes these species sensitive bioindicators of aquatic ecosystem health.
While monoxenous (single-host) species may persist in highly perturbed, extreme environments, this is not necessarily true
for heteroxenous (multiple-host) species. As many parasites possess complex life cycles and are transmitted through a chain
of host species, their dependency on the latter to complete their life cycles renders them sensitive to perturbed environments.
In the present study, parasite communities of grey mullet Liza aurata and Liza ramada (Mugilidae) were investigated at two Mediterranean coastal sites in northern Israel: the highly polluted Kishon Harbor (KH)
and the relatively unspoiled reference site, Ma'agan Michael (MM). Both are estuarine sites in which grey mullet are one of
the most common fish species. The results indicate that fish at the polluted site had significantly less trematode metacercariae
than fish at the reference site. Heteroxenous gut helminths were completely absent at the polluted sampling site. Consequently,
KH fish displayed lower mean parasite species richness. At the same time, KH fish mean monoxenous parasite richness was higher,
although the prevalence of different monoxenous taxa was variable. Copepods had an increased prevalence while monogenean prevalence
was significantly reduced at the polluted site. This variability may be attributed to the differential susceptibility of the
parasites to the toxicity of different pollutants, their concentration, the exposure time and possible synergistic effects.
In this study, we used the cumulative species curve model that extrapolates "true" species richness of a given habitat as
a function of increasing sample size. We considered the heteroxenous and monoxenous species separately for each site, and
comparison of curves yielded significant results. It is proposed to employ this approach, originally developed for estimating
the "true" parasite species richness for a given habitat, in the characterization of communities of differentially impacted
coastal marine ecosystems.

The study aimed at evaluating the ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations in the liver and blood of the Mediterranean sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) after being fed Rovimix Stay C‐25 (RS C‐25) at three different levels (0, 200 and 800 mg kg?1 of AA) over 45 days. RS C‐25 is a mixture of equal parts of AA monophosphate, diphosphate and polyphosphate, containing a 25% AA equivalent. Increasing RS C‐25 levels in the diet yielded an increasing ascorbic acid content in the plasma and liver, showing a good sea bream utilization of this source of vitamin C. Dietary vitamin C did not affect the growth rate or feed efficiency during the 45‐day experiment. After 75 days, fish fed a vitamin C‐free diet displayed a severe depletion of AA in the liver. 相似文献

1. Variations in the strength of ecological interactions between seasons have received little attention, despite an increased focus on climate alterations on ecosystems. Particularly, the winter situation is often neglected when studying competitive interactions. In northern temperate freshwaters, winter implies low temperatures and reduced food availability, but also strong reduction in ambient light because of ice and snow cover. Here, we study how brown trout [Salmo trutta (L.)] respond to variations in ice-cover duration and competition with Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)], by linking laboratory-derived physiological performance and field data on variation in abundance among and within natural brown trout populations. 2. Both Arctic charr and brown trout reduced resting metabolic rate under simulated ice-cover (darkness) in the laboratory, compared to no ice (6-h daylight). However, in contrast to brown trout, Arctic charr was able to obtain positive growth rate in darkness and had higher food intake in tank experiments than brown trout. Arctic charr also performed better (lower energy loss) under simulated ice-cover in a semi-natural environment with natural food supply. 3. When comparing brown trout biomass across 190 Norwegian lakes along a climate gradient, longer ice-covered duration decreased the biomass only in lakes where brown trout lived together with Arctic charr. We were not able to detect any effect of ice-cover on brown trout biomass in lakes where brown trout was the only fish species. 4. Similarly, a 25-year time series from a lake with both brown trout and Arctic charr showed that brown trout population growth rate depended on the interaction between ice breakup date and Arctic charr abundance. High charr abundance was correlated with low trout population growth rate only in combination with long winters. 5. In conclusion, the two species differed in performance under ice, and the observed outcome of competition in natural populations was strongly dependent on duration of the ice-covered period. Our study shows that changes in ice phenology may alter species interactions in Northern aquatic systems. Increased knowledge of how adaptations to winter conditions differ among coexisting species is therefore vital for our understanding of ecological impacts of climate change. 相似文献

The length–weight relationship parameters were recorded for 24 families, 34 genera and 46 species of 10 963 specimens sampled off the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, many for the first time.
