ABSTRACT. The distal part of the ovipositor of Dasineura brassicae Winn. (Diptera; Cecidomyiidae) possesses forty to forty-five sensilla of three morphological types. Most are provided with a cuticular bristle, which projects from the surface of the ovipositor; fifteen have a taste/tactile function based on fine structural characteristics; about twenty-five are innervated by a single sensory cell, specialized for mechanoreception. Scolopidial sensory receptors are anchored to the cuticle inside the distal part of the ovipositor, they probably respond to changes in length of the ovipositor. Different sensory systems are involved in the choice of oviposition site; compound eyes and antennae are probably active in the earlier stages, whereas the receptors of the ovipositor appear well suited to govern the last steps in this behaviour.

Sensilla on male and female antennae, mouthparts, tarsi and on the ovipositor of the European sunflower moth, Homoeosoma nebulella (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) have been investigated by means of scanning electron microscope. The antennal flagellum bears multiporous sensilla (trichodea, basiconica, auricillica, coeloconica) and uniporous sensilla (chaetica, styloconica). A sexual dimorphism is found in the numbers of sensilla trichodea (8300 in males and 6000 in females) and sensilla basiconica (1150 in females and 650 in males). The proboscis has uniporous s. styloconica, multiporous s. basiconica (described for the first time in Lepidoptera), aporous s. chaetica, and some rare uniporous s. basiconica in the food channel. The labial palp-pit organ houses multiporous s. coeloconica, while the maxillary palps have aporous sensilla. Tarsi of both sexes possess one type of aporous s. chaetica and 2 types of uniporous s. chaetica. There is no significant difference in the distribution of tarsal sensilla between males and females. The surface of each lobe of the ovipositor is covered by 3 types of aporous s. trichodea of different lengths and about 60 multiporous s. basiconica, sensilla unusual on the ovipositor of Lepidoptera. The role of sensilla in the oviposition site selection is discussed.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera:Psyllidae), is one of the most important pests of citrus plants worldwide, due to be the dominant vector of the devastating citrus disease Huanglongbing (HLB). Selection of suitable oviposition site is a crucial event of phytophagous insect life. Usually, the chemical and physical characteristics of a host plant were recognized by sensilla on the ovipositor and tarsi of a phytophagous insect after settling on a plant surface. In this study, the morphology, number, and distribution pattern of the ovipositorial and tarsal sensilla of adult female psyllids, were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The effect of these sensilla on oviposition was investigated by sensilla deactivation using hydrochloric acid (HCl). The results showed that sensilla trichoid (ST), sensilla chaetica (ChS) and sensilla basiconica (SB) were distributed on ovipositor, while sensilla trichoid (ST) were distributed on the external genitalia. Sensilla chaetica (ChS) and basiconica (SB) were mainly distributed on the end of the ovipositor back plate, and on the base of the sternum. On tarsus, sensilla trichoid (ST), sensilla chaetica (ChS), sensilla triangular (TeS) and sensilla ear ball (SE) were observed. However, whole tarsal segments were covered with Böhm's mane, which was arranged in a circular line. Oviposition assay revealed that a significantly lower number of eggs were laid on the Murraya paniculata seedlings confined by the psyllids with deactivated ovipositorial sensilla followed by protarsal sensilla, mesotarsal sensilla and hindtarsal sensilla. These results suggested that the ovipositorial and tarsal sensilla of citrus psyllid have an important role in the oviposition.

In adult female crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus), rhythmic movements of ovipositor valves are produced by contractions of a set of ovipositor muscles that mediate egg-laying behavior. Recordings from implanted wire electrodes in the ovipositor muscles of freely moving crickets revealed sequential changes in the temporal pattern of motor activity that corresponded to shifts between behavioral steps: penetration of the ovipositor into a substrate, deposition of eggs, and withdrawal of the ovipositor from the substrate. We aimed in this study to illustrate the neuronal organization producing these motor patterns and the pattern-switching mechanism during the behavioral sequence. Firstly, we obtained intracellular recordings in tethered preparations, and identified 12 types of interneurons that were involved in the rhythmic activity of the ovipositor muscles. These interneurons fell into two classes: ‘initiator interneurons’ in which excitation preceded the rhythmic contractions of ovipositor muscles, and ‘oscillator interneurons’ in which the rhythmic oscillation and spike bursting occurred in sync with the oviposition motor rhythm. One of the oscillator interneurons exhibited different depolarization patterns in the penetration and deposition motor rhythms. It is likely that some of the oscillator interneurons are involved in producing different oviposition motor patterns. Secondly, we analyzed oviposition motor patterns when the mecahnosensory hairs located on the inside surface of the dorsal ovipositor valves were removed. In deafferented preparations, the sequential change from deposition to withdrawal did not occur. Therefore, the switching from deposition pattern to withdrawal pattern is signaled by the hair sensilla that detect the passage of an egg just before it is expelled.

Parasitoid wasps from the insect order Hymenoptera can be deployed successfully as biological control agents for a number of pests, and have previously been introduced for the control of corn pest insect species from the Lepidopteran genus Ostrinia. Organs on the ovipositor of parasitoid wasps have mechanical and tactile senses that coordinate the complex movements of egg laying, and the ovipositor of Hymenopteran insects have evolved associated venom glands as part of their stinging defense. The ovipositor of parasitic wasps has evolved an additional function as a piercing organ that is required for the deposition of eggs within suitable host larvae. The morphology and ultrastructure of sense organs on the ovipositor and sheath of Macrocentrus cingulum Brischke (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are described using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Three types of sensilla trichodea were shown to be abundant on the outer sheath of the ovipositor, with types II and III being most distal, and the inner surface of the ovipositor covered with microtrichia, more densely near the apex. Sensilla coeloconica are distributed on both ventral and dorsal valves, while campaniform sensilla and secretory pores are only located on the dorsal valve. The olistheter-like interlocking mechanism, as well as the morphology of the ventral and dorsal valve tips and the ventral valve seal may be important in stinging, oviposition and in the host selection process.

We describe the number, distribution, and function of sensilla located on different organs of Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) females using scanning electron microscopy, selective staining, and contact electrophysiology. The tarsi of the prothoracic legs bear contact chemo‐mechanoreceptor sensilla chaetica (5–13 per tarsomere), arranged in rings mainly concentrated on ventral surfaces, and different mechanosensory structures (sensilla chaetica, sensilla squamiformia, sensilla campaniformia, and spines). A single contact chemo‐mechanoreceptor sensillum chaeticum is present between the claws on the pretarsus. The ventral surface of the ovipositor lobes is covered with numerous mechanosensory sensilla chaetica of different types, out of which 10 have a contact chemosensory function. Putative contact chemo‐mechanoreceptor sensilla were also observed on the proboscis and antenna. Longitudinal rows of alternated sensilla styloconica and basiconica are present on the distal part of the proboscis, and rings of sensilla chaetica are present at the antennal tip. The sensilla on these body parts may play different roles in the selection of an oviposition site.

A large number of contact chemoreceptors are located on the ovipositor valves of adult female grasshoppers. These receptors play an important role in many aspects of grasshopper life such as detecting the chemical composition of the soil before and during oviposition. It is surprising, however, to find these types of receptors on the ovipositor valves of instar larvae which are not able to oviposit. Thus, these receptors may serve functions other than to search for a suitable site for egg laying. Observation under the scanning electron microscope revealed the presence of uniporous basiconic contact chemoreceptors in addition to different types of trichoid mechanoreceptors on the ovipositor valve of lubber grasshopper 3rd instar larvae. Neuroanatomical studies have shown that these sensilla are multiply innervated, containing one mechanosensory neuron and four chemosensory neurons that project locally and intersegmentally. The tip recording technique from single basiconic sensilla demonstrated mechanosensory responses to deflections of the sensillum as well as gustatory activity when in contact with different chemical solutions. The electrophysiological studies have shown that these sensilla serve as contact chemoreceptors and not as olfactory receptors.

Abstract.  The influence of glucose, fructose and sucrose on oviposition site selection by Lobesia botrana is studied by combining behavioural and electrophysiological experiments. Oviposition choice assays, using surrogate grapes treated with grape berry surface extracts of Vitis vinifera cv. Merlot at different development stages, show that L. botrana females are most stimulated by extracts of mature berries containing the highest concentrations of glucose and fructose. Choice assays reveal that the oviposition response to these sugars is dose-dependant (with a threshold of the applied solution = 10 m m and a maximum stimulation at 1  m ) and that females are more sensitive to fructose than to glucose. Tarsal contact-chemoreceptor sensilla are unresponsive to stimulation with sugars but the ovipositor sensilla contain at least one neurone most sensitive to fructose and sucrose with a threshold of approximately 0.5 m m . Corresponding to the behavioural data, glucose is significantly less stimulatory to sensilla than fructose or sucrose. It is argued that fructose may be of special importance for herbivorous insects exploiting fruit as an oviposition site.

The functions of the gustatory, olfactory, touch and stress receptors on the cerci of Lucilia cuprina Wied. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are apparent from the morphology of their distal dendritic segments and associated cuticular structures. Each trichoid mechanoreceptor has a dendrite containing a tubular body at the base of the hairshaft. The suspension fibres and socket septum may be involved in transmitting a stimulus to the dendrite terminal and restoring the hair to its resting position. The campaniform sensilla are considered as trichoid mechanoreceptors with reduced hair shafts and socket structures, reflected in fusion of the suspension fibres into the inner cuticle of the dome and loss of the socket septum. Fusion and reduction of the socket structures is also apparent at the bases of the olfactory pegs. They differ from typical antennal olfactory sensilla in having a flexible socket and relatively thick walls; features which may protect them from damage during ovipositor probing of potential oviposition substrates. The two types of cereal gustatory sensilla differ in their complement of chemosensory dendrites, one has three, the other four, the latter type also has a mechanoreceptive dendrite at the base of the hair shaft. Both types have socket structures resembling those of the trichoid mechanoreceptors.

Abstract.  The host acceptance behaviour in Aphidius ervi is investigated, assessing the role of both external and internal host-associated cues, offered to the experimental parasitoids with parafilm-made aphid dummies. The reaction to internal cues present in the host haemolymph is clearly evident, and its intensity is enhanced by external cues. Parasitoid females lay few eggs in aphid dummies filled with host haemolymph. A significant increase in the number of both oviposition reactions (host stinging) and egg laying is observed only when these dummies are coated with cornicle secretion. However, this enhancement is not observed when the aphid dummies contain distilled water. Thus, the host acceptance behaviour of A. ervi females appears to be controlled by the integration of both external and internal chemical cues. The physiological basis of this behavioural response is investigated with a detailed study on the anatomy and ultrastructure of A. ervi ovipositor. The detection of chemical cues present in the host haemolymph that act as kairomones is made possible by the presence of gustatory sensilla on the tip of the ovipositor. These sensilla consist of porous areas, reached by unbranched dendrites running inside both the lower valves (i.e. first valvulae) and the unpaired upper valve (i.e. second valvulae). The mechanosensory function during oviposition appears to be provided mostly by the basiconic sensilla found on the tip of external valves (i.e. third valvulae). A tentative functional model accounting for the observed oviposition behaviour of A. ervi is proposed.

Abstract. Contact chemoreception plays a decisive role in host selection and oviposition behaviour of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L. (Diptera, Anthomyiidae). Glucosinolates (mustard oil glucosides) are known to be perceived by the flies, and when sprayed on paper leaf-models induce oviposition. Recently it has become clear that other non-volatile types of compounds must also be involved in host selection.
A pair of ventro-medial C sensilla on die fifth tarsomere respond strongly to a novel compound called tentatively 'cabbage identification factor' (CIF), but not to sucrose, glucose, fructose and proline. CDF is a new non-glucosinolate oviposition stimulant. A single neurone in each sensillum is activated by this compound and the same is true for glucosinolates. In some flies a mixture of bom types of stimuli evoked an apparent mononeural spike train, whereas in odiers spikes of two separate cells were activated. The significance of this variability is not yet clear.
The new stimulant, CIF, does not evoke responses in glucosinolate receptors in the D sensilla. The involvement of the C3 sensilla in the detection of host-specific compounds constitutes the first known function for C sensilla in D. radicum. CIF appears to be present in leaf surface extracts from the host-plant Brassica oleracea in quantities as low as 1 ng per gram leaf. In spite of this low level, it stimulates oviposition significantly better than glucobrassicin at higher concentrations, which up till now was known as the most powerful stimulant for D.radicum.

Pseudoligosita yasumatsui Viggiani and Subba Rao 1978 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is a common egg parasitoid of rice insect pests. The surface morphology of the antenna and ovipositor on P. yasumatsui was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The antenna of P. yasumatsui is geniculate in shape, hinged at the scape-pedicel joint, approximately 190 μm in length and consists of seven antennomeres. In total, the male and female antennae have ten different types of sensilla: trichoid sensilla type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, campaniform sensilla, basiconic sensilla, and placoid sensilla type 1 and 2. The flagellum of the female antenna is covered with cuticular pores, which are absent on the male antennal flagellum. The distal extremity of its ovipositor stylet has campaniform sensilla and styloconic sensilla. Trichoid sensilla found on its apical abdomen part may play a role in the host detection and egg placement. The types and distribution of antennal and ovipositor sensilla on the parasitoid were discussed.

The functional reproductive morphology of the female glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), is described at both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy levels. The female has nine abdominal segments; the seventh to the ninth abdominal segments are modified for reproduction; the eighth tergite is reduced to two segments, with the ovipositor partially exposed from the modified ninth segment-the pygofer. The pygofer, covered with trichoid and coeloconic sensilla, almost completely encloses the ovipositor, which consists of three pairs of valvulae and two pairs of valvifers. The first and second valvulae function together for oviposition. The first valvulae are located exterior to the second valvulae, both of which bear many trichoid, campaniform, and coeloconic sensilla. The third valvulae, possessing many coeloconic sensilla, envelope the first and second valvulae. Seven major muscles are found to be associated with the ovipositor and the pygofer. The oviposition process is described with respect to the activity of the valvulae and their associated musculature. The female morphology follows the general pattern of cicadellids as a group.

Contact chemoreceptors (basiconic sensilla) located on the ovipositor and genital segments of the locust serve to control the chemical features of the substrate before and during oviposition. They occur dispersed and also crowded in fields between mechanosensory exteroceptors sensitive to touch or wind (trichoid and filiform sensilla). The central nervous projections of the four chemosensory and one mechanosensory neurons from single basiconic sensilla were stained selectively, focusing on receptors on the ovipositor valves, which usually contact the substrate during the pre-oviposition probing movements. All axons and neurites from one contact chemoreceptor usually stay close together in most of their projections. Segregation occurs mainly when single axons terminate in one neuromere while the others proceed to a different neuromere or ganglion. For projections from one chemoreceptor, there is evidence neither for functional segregation of mechanosensory from chemosensory afferent terminals nor for specific segregation between different chemosensory afferents. The projections from sensilla of dorsal cuticle tend to project rather uniformly along the midline of the terminal ganglion. Comparative staining of touch- and wind-sensitive hair receptor neurons shows mostly central projections, similar to those of neighbouring contact chemoreceptors. From the typical intersegmental projections of most primary afferents and from the lack of segregation into glomerular structures, we conclude that integration of chemosensory information from the genital segments is distributed in the terminal and the 7th abdominal ganglion.

ABSTRACT. Electrophysiological recordings from the tarsal D-sensilla of mature, 5–7-day-old female European cherry fruit fly ( Rhagoletis cerasi L.) revealed that a large proportion of sensilla showed no sensory activity in response to stimulation with the oviposition deterring pheromone ('ODP') or sucrose. In contrast, good recordings were obtained from almost all sensilla in freshly emerged, 1-day-old flies. Ageing, nutritional state and contamination were excluded as possible major factors influencing the responsiveness of the D-sensilla. The study of the variability in responsiveness of the sensilla of 1-day-old flies among different tarsomers, among tarsi of the same individual and among individuals, revealed that the major source of variability was among individuals.
Individual flies were also affected by the humidity in the holding cages: relative air humidity of less then 75% for 4–6 days was shown to reduce the number of D-sensilla giving recordings with a good signal-to-noise ratio. The D-sensilla on the most distal tarsomers were affected most by the reduced (30–55% r. h.) air humidity. Flies which had contact with plant leaves showed less reduction in responsiveness at low air humidity (40% r. h.) then flies without leaf contact.

Observations of oviposition behaviour by Chilo partellus revealed that antennae, ovipositor tip and possibly tarsi were all involved in the choice of oviposition site. Among a very large number of typical mechanoreceptor hairs on the tip of the ovipositor valves, two pairs of stouter, blunt-tipped hairs were discovered. These hairs alone took up silver nitrate stain and transmission electron microscope sections revealed that the hair shaft had a hollow lumen within which ran a group of four or five dendrites. It is concluded that these sensilla are contact chemoreceptors and they are positioned in such a way that, with the placing of each egg, they would contact the oviposition substrate. Similar hairs were found on the ovipositor of Spodoptera littoralis . It is suggested that the hairs may prevent oviposition on surfaces directly chemically harmful to the eggs.

This study investigates the behavioural and neural mechanisms involved in the oviposition behaviour of the turnip root fly,Delia floralis (Fallen). Behavioural studies showed that glucosinolates modulated the oviposition behaviour of the flies on artificial leaves as well as the number of eggs laid in the soil at the base of these leaves. Electrophysiological responses to glucosinolates were obtained from type A and type D sensilla on the prothoracic and mesothoracic tarsi, as well as from the long contact sensilla on the labellum. The neural responses from these sensilla were positively correlated with the oviposition behaviour of the flies and with the number of eggs laid. Of the eleven glucosinolates tested in the behavioural and electrophysiological tests, the flies were most responsive to glucobrassicanapin, gluconapin and glucobrassicin. The type D tarsal sensilla were more responsive to the glucosinolates than either the type A tarsal sensilla or the labellar sensilla. The structure-activity investigations showed that slight modifications to the chemical composition of the glucosinolates resulted in changes in neural activity.
