Although there are several reports on ultradian and circadian rhythms in newborns, we found only one report in which infradian periodicities are described for heart-rate measurements in the early stages of human development. Here, we report infradian rhythms in the monthly range in the sleep/wake cycle of four infants studied along 24 consecutive weeks. Our procedure was applied to sleep diary records from four healthy newborns. The data were arranged in binary time series representing sleep (?1) or wake (1) states. These time series were integrated in order to obtain the cumulative sleep/wake time. A measure of the sleep/wake ratio (SWR) was obtained by computing the average slope of the cumulative sleep/wake time. To extract periodicities we applied the Fourier periodogram to the temporal course of the SWR. We found a notorious difference in the SWR pattern among infants. In two infants the SWR showed a marked linear decay, spending more time asleep than awake, while in the two other infants oscillated near zero. We found robust oscillations in all children. In all cases the Fourier periodogram results present significant power in the infradian range. From these results, we suggest that sleep and wake durations are probably modulated by some internal stimuli.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore: (a) sleep patterns and disorders possibly associated with adolescent bullying profiles (pure bully, pure victim, bully/victim and neutral) and (b) the effect of sleep on psychosocial problems (externalized and internalized) related to bullying. The sample consisted of 1422 students aged 10–18 (mean?=?14.3, SD?=?2.7; 57% male) from five socioeconomically diverse schools in France. Bullying profiles were obtained using the revised Bully–Victim Questionnaire. Subjective sleep disorders were assessed using the Athens Insomnia Scale. School-week and weekend sleep/wake patterns were recorded. Internalizing problems were investigated using a Perceived Social Disintegration Scale and a Psychological Distress Scale. Externalizing behaviors were assessed using a General Aggressiveness Scale and an Antisocial Behavior Scale. These questionnaires were administered during individual interviews at school. After controlling for effects of gender and age, victims of bullying showed significantly more subjective sleep disturbances than the pure-bully or neutral groups (p?<?0.001). Bullies’ sleep schedules were more irregular (p?<?0.001 for bedtime irregularity and p<0.01 for wake-up time irregularity) and their sleep duration was shorter than their schoolmates (p?<?0.001 for the school week and p?<?0.05 for the weekend). There was an effect of sleep on psychosocial problems related to bullying, and our results indicate that sleep has a moderating effect on aggression in bullies (p?<?0.001). This would suggest a higher vulnerability of bullies to sleep deprivation. These results show differences in sleep problems and patterns in school-bullying profiles. Findings of this study open up new perspectives for understanding and preventing bullying in schools, with implications for research and clinical applications.  相似文献

Background

This study aimed to develop an algorithm for determining sleep/wake states by using chronological data on the amount of physical activity (activity intensity) measured with the FS-750 actigraph, a device that can be worn at the waist, allows for its data to be downloaded at home, and is suitable for use in both sleep research and remote sleep medicine.

Methods

Participants were 34 healthy young adults randomly assigned to two groups, A (n =17) and B (n =17), who underwent an 8-hour polysomnography (PSG) in the laboratory environment. Simultaneous activity data were obtained using the FS-750 attached at the front waist. Sleep/wake state and activity intensity were calculated every 2 minutes (1 epoch). To determine the central epoch of the sleep/wake states (x), a five-variable linear model was developed using the activity intensity of Group A for five epochs (x-2, x-1, x, x+1, x+2; 10 minutes). The optimal coefficients were calculated using discriminant analysis. The agreement rate of the developed algorithm was then retested with Group B, and its validity was examined.

Results

The overall agreement rates for group A and group B calculated using the sleep/wake score algorithm developed were 84.7% and 85.4%, respectively. Mean sensitivity (agreement rate for sleep state) was 88.3% and 90.0% and mean specificity (agreement rate for wakeful state) was 66.0% and 64.9%, respectively. These results confirmed comparable agreement rates between the two groups. Furthermore, when applying an estimation rule developed for the sleep parameters measured by the FS-750, no differences were found in the average values between the calculated scores and PSG results, and we also observed a correlation between the two sets of results. Thus, the validity of these evaluation indices based on measurements from the FS-750 is confirmed.

Conclusions

The developed algorithm could determine sleep/wake states from activity intensity data obtained with the FS-750 with sensitivity and specificity equivalent to that determined with conventional actigraphs. The FS-750, which is smaller, less expensive, and able to take measurements over longer periods than conventional devices, is a promising tool for advancing sleep studies at home and in remote sleep medicine.  相似文献

The Fourier spectral analysis of binary time series (or rectangular signals) causes methodological problems, due to the fact that it is based on sinusoidal functions. We propose a new tool for the detection of periodicities in binary time series, focusing on sleep/wake cycles. This methodology is based on a weighted histogram of cycle durations. In this paper, we compare our methodology with the Fourier spectral analysis on the basis of simulated and real binary data sets of various lengths. We also provide an approach to statistical validation of the periodicities determined with our methodology. Furthermore, we analyze the discriminating power of both methods in terms of standard deviation. Our results indicate that the Ciclograma is much more powerful than Fourier analysis when applied on this type of time series.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the sleep/wake behavior during on-duty and off-duty periods in three age groups whilst performing shift work. The subjects (29 male shift workers in an electronics assembly plant) were examined using wrist actigraphy. They were monitored during a continuous full-day, three-team, three-shift system involving a forward rotation. The wrist actigraphic data were obtained for 21 days (1 shift cycle) for each subject. The number of episodes of dozing and total time spent dozing during the night shift significantly increased in the group aged more than 36 years, but the activity count significantly decreased. Time asleep at home during the night or evening shifts significantly decreased in those aged more than 36 years as compared to the younger groups, but the activity count in the daytime was significantly increased. From these results, we suggest that the adaptation of sleep behavior during a night shift becomes poorer with increasing age.  相似文献

Daytime workers tend to have shorter sleep duration and earlier sleep onset during work days than on days off. Large individual differences in sleep onset and sleep duration may be observed on work days, but work usually synchronizes sleep offset to a similar time. The present study describes individual differences in sleep behaviour of 48 daytime workers (25 men, aged 20–58 years) from an iron ore mine in Northern Sweden. The aim of the study was to determine whether differences in sleep patterns during work days were associated with the outcomes of sleepiness and sleep complaints. Cluster analysis was used to group workers into two categories of sleep onset and sleep duration. The “Late Sleep Onset” cluster comprised workers who slept 1.30 h later than the “Early Sleep Onset” cluster (p < 0.0001 for all weekdays). The “Long Sleep Duration” cluster slept 1.10 h longer than the “Short Sleep Duration” cluster (p < 0.0002 for work nights). The “Late Sleep Onset” cluster reported less refreshing sleep (p < 0.01) and had lower sufficient sleep scores (p < 0.01) than the “Early Sleep Onset” cluster. The “Short Sleep Duration” cluster also reported lower scores for sufficient sleep (p < 0.04) than the “Long Sleep Duration” cluster. For combined characteristics (phase and duration), workers with a late phase and short sleep duration reported greater sleep debt and sleepiness than workers with an early phase and short sleep duration (p < 0.02). Work schedule and commuting time modulate both sleep phase and sleep duration independently. Workers, classified as having an intermediate sleep phase preference, can organize their sleep time in order to minimize sleep debt and sleepiness symptoms. Individual differences in sleep phase and duration should be considered when promoting well-being at work even among groups with similar sleep needs. In order to minimize sleep debt and sleepiness symptoms, successful sleep behaviour could be promoted involving extend use of flexitime arrangement (i.e. later starting times) and reduce use of alarm clocks.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus-2, capable of high human transmission. To protect against the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization proposed intervening guidance that included movement restrictions, isolation, restriction of national and international travel or movement, and full or partial closure of organizations and institutions. Police personnel play a vital role in safeguarding the spread of COVID-19; thus, potentially causing severe stress due to increased consignment and direct exposure to infection during duty. The study aimed to determine the effect of the added stress of the COVID-19 pandemic and population lockdown on the sleep/wake 24 h rhythm of traffic police. A concise online questionnaire survey was conducted among the traffic police personnel of India. Collected data were analyzed statistically. Disorientation of working schedule, fear of being vulnerable to disease, pressure of maintaining law, and orders during lockdown increased stress level. The survey identified discontinuation of sleep, shift of mid-sleep time, increase in depression, plus stress and anxiety among traffic police personnel that affected their chronobiological milieu. Proper awareness of adequate health and safety measures, use of personnel protection equipment, regular conversation with family members, and meditation can help reduce stress during this pandemic situation.  相似文献

The relationships between biological rhythms and human aggressive behavior are addressed and discussed in this article: First, circadian rhythms and aggression are considered. Studies of sleep/waking cycle disturbances in aggression are reported. Severe aggression is associated with profound changes in sleep architecture. Causal link is difficult to establish given that sleep disturbance and aggressive behavior could be the symptoms of the same disorder. Specific aggressive behavior developed during sleep is also described. In addition, hormonal circadian rhythm studies are reported. Thus, low cortisol levels, in particular low cortisol variability, are associated with aggressive behavior, suggesting an inhibitory role of cortisol. Testosterone has daily and seasonal fluctuations, but no link with aggression has been established. Neurophysiological underlying mechanisms are discussed in the last part of this article, with a focus on the relationship between brain rhythm and aggression. Increase of slow-wave EEG activities is observed in individuals with aggressive behavior. Epilepsy, as a disease of brain rhythm could be associated with aggressive behavior, in pre, post and inter ictal periodes. Incidence of aggression is not likely more prevalent in epileptic individuals compared to those with other neurological conditions. Ictal changes take the form of profound behavioral changes, including aggressive behavior which has been interpreted as the emergence of “archeical” or innate motor patterns. In this multidisciplinary approach, the main difficulty is the categorization of the differents types of aggression. Finally, taken together, these studies suggest that biological rhythms, especially circadian rhythms, could provide therapeutic benefits to human aggressive behavior. Biological rhythymicity seems to be a necessary permanent training offering interesting perspectives for the adaptation to changes in the field of aggression.  相似文献

According to the two-process model of sleep–wake regulation, a homeostatic sleep pressure, i.e. a pressure to enter into deep non-rapid eyes movement (NREM) sleep, must exhibit a purely exponential buildup during prolonged wakefulness. However, this pressure is usually measured indirectly, i.e. during the following episode of actual deep NREM sleep. The purpose of this paper was to show that, despite a prominent circadian modulation of time course of any waking EEG index, the model-postulated purely exponential buildup of the homeostatic sleep pressure can be directly confirmed. During two days of sleep deprivation experiments, the EEG of healthy adults (N = 30) was recorded every other hour throughout 5-min eyes closed relaxation. Sixteen ln-transformed single-Hz power densities (from 1 to 16 Hz) were computed for each of 5 one-min intervals. Differences between these densities obtained for the first and the following intervals were calculated and averaged. The obtained 16 values were used as the frequency weighting curve for weighting densities of each set of 16 single-Hz power densities. Summing-up of these weighted densities provided a single measure that was found to co-vary with self-rated sleepiness throughout two-day interval of sleep deprivation, thus reflecting the joint influence of the circadian and homeostatic processes. However, two-day time course of responsiveness of this measure to closing the eyes for just a few minutes exhibited a purely exponential buildup. It was concluded that this result provided a direct experimental confirmation of the model-predicted exponential buildup of the homeostatic sleep pressure across prolonged episode of wakefulness.  相似文献

This issue of Chronobiology International is dedicated to the age-related changes in circadian rhythms as they occur in humans. It seems timely to give an overview of the knowledge and hypotheses on these changes now that we enter a century in which the number and percentage of elderly in the population will be unprecedented. Although we should take care not to follow the current tendency to think of old age as a disease—ignoring the fine aspects of being old—there is definitely an age-related increase in the risk of a number of conditions that are at least uncomfortable.

Circadian rhythms have been attributed adaptive values that usually go unnoticed, but can surface painfully clear when derangements occur. Alterations in the regulation of circadian rhythms are thought to contribute to the symptoms of a number of conditions for which the risk is increased in old age (e.g., sleep disturbances, dementia, and depression). A multidisciplinary approach to investigate the mechanisms of age-related changes in circadian regulation eventually may result in treatment strategies that will improve the quality of life of the growing number of elderly.

Although diverse topics are addressed in this issue, the possible mechanisms by which a deranged circadian timing system may be involved in sleep disturbances receives the most attention. This seems appropriate in view of the numerous studies that have addressed this relation in the last decade and also because of the high frequency and strong impact of sleep disturbances in the elderly. This introduction to the special issue first briefly addresses the impact of disturbed sleep in the elderly to show that the development of therapeutic methods other than the currently available pharmacological treatments should be given high priority. ABSTRACT

Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have higher than average rates of coffee, tobacco and alcohol use. These substances may have deleterious effects on sleep quality and quantity, which may destabilize sleep/wake cycles and negatively impact the clinical course and prognosis of BD. The use of these substances may also be perceived as a self-medication attempt, for example, to induce sleep or to increase vigilance during the day. The objective of the current study was to investigate associations between the self-reported daily use of coffee, tobacco, and alcohol, and objective measures of sleep and activity patterns in adult individuals with BD. A sample of 147 euthymic individuals with BD were assessed for daily coffee, tobacco and alcohol consumption and 21 days of actigraphy monitoring. Actigraphic measures of sleep quantity and daytime activity were compared between groups classified as coffee+/coffee-, tobacco+/tobacco- and alcohol+/alcohol-, defined according to their current daily use. Then, we examined potential correlations between sleep/wake cycle parameters and the amount of daily consumption of each substance. Multivariable analyses identified associations between the use of coffee, tobacco, and alcohol and several sleep and activity parameters, such as between coffee, alcohol, and the relative amplitude of activity (respectively, p = .003 and p = .005), between alcohol and M10 onset (onset time of the 10 most active hours during the 24-h cycle) (p = .003), and between coffee and sleep duration (p = .047). This study supports the hypothesis that there is a relationship, whose direction would be bidirectional, between the daily use of these substances and the sleep/wake cycle in euthymic individuals with BD. These preliminary results require replications in other retrospective and prospective samples. They may have a clinical impact on psycho-education strategies to be proposed to individuals with BD.  相似文献

Sleep is a well-studied biological process in vertebrates, particularly birds and mammals. Less is know about sleep in solitary and social invertebrates, particularly the ants. This paper reports a study of light/dark periods on worker activity as well as sleep location, posture and the wake/sleep cycles of fire ant workers and queens located in an artificial nest chamber. Workers slept in one of three locations: on the ceiling, against the chamber wall or in the center of the chamber floor. Workers on the ceiling or against the chamber wall slept for longer periods than those at the center of the chamber floor where most grooming and feeding activity occurred. When sleeping, queens huddled together. Their close contact generated synchronized wake/sleep cycles with each other. Sleep posture was distinctly different than wake posture. During deep sleep, queens and workers folded their antennae and were non-responsive to contact by other ants. Another indicator of deep sleep was rapid antennal movement (RAM sleep). Sleep episodes were polyphasic. Queens averaged ~92 sleep episodes per day, each episode lasting ~6 min, for a total of ~9.4 h of sleep per day. Workers averaged ~253 sleep episodes lasting 1.1 min each for a total of ~4.8 h of sleep per day. Activity episodes were unaffected by light/dark periods. Workers were hypervigilant with an average of 80% of the labor force completing grooming, feeding or excavation tasks at any given time. These findings reinforce the parental exploitation hypothesis—sterile workers are a caste of disposable, short-lived helpers whose vigilance and hyperactivty increases the queen’s fitness by buffering her and her fertile offspring from environmental stresses.  相似文献

The focus of this study was on daytime and nighttime sleep and wakefulness during the peak age for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), two to four months, to determine whether there are differences between at-risk for SIDS (R) and control (C) infants. Such differences may provide insight on the frequent occurrence of SIDS in the early morning hours, when most babies are asleep. This is the only study in which R and C infants were continuously monitored for long periods of time (24-48 h) and then followed and recorded at monthly intervals until the age of 4-6 months. Data analyses indicate that ultradian REM/NREM cyclicity becomes stabilized into a regular pattern at three months of age. Infants at this age convert from a polyphasic sleep/wakefulness pattern to a circadian one. Among the changes that occur is a lengthening of short sleep periods that consolidate at night and wake periods that consolidate in the daytime. The most striking effects are related to sleep state and vary according to age and sex. The lengthening of single sleep and wakeful periods is coupled with the maturation of the brain. The development of the central nervous system facilitates the synchronization of sleeping patterns with external light input and social entrainment. One or more biological clocks or oscillators may be responsible for these REM/NREM patterns and circadian cycles. These differences during the early morning hours, when the occurrence of SIDS peaks, may have important implications for understanding the pathophysiological mechanism of SIDS.  相似文献

The objectives of the investigation were to assess hypersomnia, which progressively appeared in a young patient after a pinealectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy for a typical germinoma, as well as the potential benefit of melatonin administration in the absence of its endogenous secretion. 24 h ambulatory polysomnography and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) were performed; in addition, daily plasma melatonin, cortisol, growth hormone, prolactin, and rectal temperature profiles were determined before and during melatonin treatment (one 2 mg capsule given nightly at 21:00 h for 4 weeks). MSLT showed abnormal sleep latency and two REM sleep onsets. Nighttime total sleep duration was lengthened, mainly as a consequence of an increased REM sleep duration. These parameters were slightly modified by melatonin replacement. Plasma melatonin levels, which were constantly nil in the basal condition, were increased to supraphysiological values with melatonin treatment. The plasma cortisol profile showed nycthemeral variation within the normal range, and the growth hormone profile showed supplementary diurnal peaks. Melatonin treatment did not modify the secretion of either hormone. The plasma prolactin profile did not display a physiological nocturnal increase in the basal condition; however, it did during melatonin treatment, with the rise coinciding with the nocturnal peak of melatonin concentration. A 24 h temperature rhythm of normal amplitude was persistent, though the mean level was decreased and the rhythm was dampened during melatonin treatment. The role of radiotherapy on the studied parameters cannot be excluded; the findings of this case study suggest that the observed hypersomnia is not the result of melatonin deficiency alone. Overall, melatonin treatment was well tolerated, but the benefit on the sleep abnormality, especially on daytime REM sleep, was minor, requiring the re-introduction of modafinil treatment.  相似文献

We investigated the interaction between norepinephrine (NE) and orexin/hypocretin (Hcrt) in the control of sleep behavior and narcoleptic symptoms by creating mice that were deficient in both neurotransmitters. Mice with a targeted disruption of the dopamine beta-hydroxylase (Dbh) gene (deficient in NE and epinephrine) or the Hcrt gene were bred to generate double knockouts (DKOs), each single KO (Dbh-KO and Hcrt-KO), and control mice. The duration of wake, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and REM sleep were monitored by electroencephalogram (EEG)/electromyogram (EMG) recording over a 24-h period, and the occurrence of behavioral arrests was monitored by video/EEG recording for 4 h. Overall, there was very little interaction between the two genes; for most parameters that were measured, the DKO mice resembled either Dbh-KO or Hcrt-KO mice. REM sleep was increased in both DKO and Hcrt-KO mice at night relative to the other groups, but DKO mice had significantly more REM sleep during the day than the other three groups. Sleep latency in response to saline or amphetamine injections was reduced in Dbh-KO and DKO mice relative to other groups. Behavioral arrests, that are frequent in Hcrt-KO mice, were not exacerbated in DKO mice.  相似文献

An association between increased risk of mortality and disruptions in rest/activity circadian rhythms (RAR) has been shown among adults with dementia and with metastatic colorectal cancer. However, the association among a more general population of older adults has not been studied. Our study population consisted of 2964 men aged?≥?67 yrs of age enrolled in the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men (MrOS Sleep) Study. Rest/activity patterns were measured with wrist actigraphy. RAR parameters were computed and expressed as quintiles, and included acrophase (time of peak activity level), amplitude (peak-to-nadir difference), mesor (middle of the peak), pseudo F-value (overall circadian rhythmicity), beta (steepness), and alpha (peak-to-trough width). After adjustment for multiple potential confounders, men in the lowest quintile of pseudo F-value had a 57% higher mortality rate (hazard ratio [HR]?=?1.57, 95% CI, 1.03–2.39) than men in the highest quintile. This association was even stronger with increased risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality (CVD) (HR?=?2.32, 95% CI, 1.04–5.22). Additionally, men in the lowest quintile of acrophase had a 2.8-fold higher rate of CVD-related mortality (HR?=?2.84, 95% CI, 1.29–6.24). There was no evidence of independent associations with amplitude, mesor, alpha, beta, and mortality risk. Older men with less robust RAR and earlier acrophase timing have modestly higher all-cause and CVD-related mortality rates.
