The amount of time that one consultant urologist wasted on unnecessary administration while seeing outpatients was noted over six weeks. Searching for missing clinical data and the time spent on non-medical clerical tasks took up nearly half of the consultant''s sessions. This seemed to be due to insufficient clerical and secretarial staff. Because low salaries are offered to such staff vast sums of money are being paid to agencies who are providing an appreciable number (40%) of the secretarial staff in our hospitals.Urgent action from the government is needed to remedy this and thus make substantial reductions in outpatient waiting lists nationally. It would greatly improve morale in this important sector of the health service without increasing total costs.  相似文献

Field surveys involving ship time are notoriously costly. Whilst continuous acoustic surveys provide good value in terms of their data richness and spatial coverage when compared to point sample surveys (e.g. trawls, dredges, grabs), there is scope to improve survey methods and provide value-added data. We present technical details and an example application of an approach that maximises survey efficiency and data richness through the integration of two acoustic tools: a fisheries echo sounder and ground-discrimination system. Simultaneous, integrated operation of both systems provides a more cost-effective use of survey time by eliminating the need to conduct independent coverage. The scientific benefit is that the approach removes the temporal and spatial problems of comparing data from two independent surveys. Stated plainly, it enables fish to be placed with their habitat by linking information about the composition of the seafloor with their horizontal and vertical distribution.  相似文献

Vegetation surveys have a long tradition in ecological studies, but several limitations in the morphological identification of species have been recognized. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of DNA barcoding in plant species identification to save field technicians time and resources. Vegetation surveys were performed in four plots of semi‐dry grassland in the Italian subalpine region of Lombardy. Two identification approaches were employed: a conventional morphological identification and a molecular multi‐marker DNA barcoding method. Results showed that morphological identification of 49 species collected from the study area (five field inspections) required a substantial amount of time to complete relative to the molecular method. The same 49 samples were analysed using the following DNA multi‐marker barcodes: rbcL, matK and trnHpsbA. rbcL showed 100% amplification success with standard primers, but low interspecific genetic variability. matK demonstrated some amplification problems with standard primers; however, consistent genetic diversity was observed. Finally, the trnHpsbA spacer region exhibited reliable amplification success and the highest molecular variability. In a comparison with publicly available databases, trnHpsbA and matK returned the highest proportion of identified samples, whereas rbcL returned several misidentifications. The DNA barcoding approach is a powerful tool in vegetation surveys and may significantly reduce the time and cost spent for species identification. A demonstration project was set up to create two small papyrus wetlands in villages on the shores of Lake Victoria near Rubondo Island National Park, aimed at helping the community to replenish the fish stock in the lake and to improve socio-economics. The wetlands were constructed by using locally available means and they are owned and successfully managed by the villages to support community-based activities. We describe the approach, methodology and design of these plots. 2 years after the wetlands were created, the above-ground papyrus biomass was found to be comparable with that of pristine papyrus wetlands at Mlaga Bay in Rubondo Island National Park. Light trap data shows increased fish around the area. This correlated well with the results of questionnaire survey from the community around the created wetland. Our study shows that the degraded wetlands around Lake Victoria can be recreated by using locally available means, to restore most of the vital functions of those wetlands as they were before destruction, and improve the socio-economics of the local communities.  相似文献

Sera from 210 pronghorns (Antilocapra americana) ranging in southeastern Alberta were tested for antibodies to disease agents present in indigenous cattle. No antibodies to Brucella abortus, Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona, hardjo, or grippotyphosa, or infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus were found. Antibodies at prevalences of 43.8% and 49.2% were detected to bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) and parainfluenza type 3 (PI-3) viruses, respectively. The much higher prevalence of BVD virus antibodies in cattle than in pronghorns, and the occurrence of clinical bovine PI-3 infection in the study area, suggest that cattle may be a source of infection to the pronghorns.  相似文献

Background: The microwave energy is an efficient disinfection method; however, it can generate high temperatures that can result in distortion of the dentures. objectives: To evaluate whether the addition of an enzymatic cleanser to microwave disinfection regimen would disinfect dentures with shorter irradiation time. Materials and methods: Seven resin discs colonized with Candida albicans biofilm were placed on the palatal surface of sterile dentures to be randomly assigned to the following treatments: immersion in distilled water for 3 min with 0 (DW), 1 (DW + M1), 2 (DW + M2), or 3 min (DW + M3) of microwave irradiation; or immersion in denture cleanser for 3 min with 0 (DC), 1 (DC + M1), 2 (DC + M2) or 3 min (DC + M3) of irradiation. After the treatments, the viable cells were counted by a blinded examiner. The temperature was measured immediately after irradiation. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (α = 0.05). Results: No viable cells were found after DC + M2, DC + M3, and DW + M3 treatments, of which DC + M2 achieved the lowest temperature. No significant difference was found between the effectiveness of DW, DW + M1 and DC treatments (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, the association of a denture cleanser and microwave energy is efficient to disinfect dentures in lower irradiation time and temperature.  相似文献

In the 24 years since the founding of BioEssays, the level of translational research, as well as the expectations for its success, have burgeoned. Based on our analysis of current and projected US efforts to establish effective centers of translational research, our own institutional experience and discussions with academic research center leaders and institutional research executives, we have arrived at several critical conclusions about how best to foster disease-based research on the institutional, national and international level, what summary statistics may best serve as a measurement of successful practice, roughly how much more money will be required to fund the ongoing venture in the US and how to organize and promote this vision.  相似文献

Adhesion-mediated signaling provides cells with information about multiple parameters of their microenvironment, including mechanical characteristics. Often, such signaling is based on a unique feature of adhesion structures: their ability to grow and strengthen when force is applied to them, either from within the cell or from the outside. Such adhesion reinforcement is characteristic of integrin-mediated cell-matrix adhesions, but may also operate in other types of adhesion structures. Though the amount of knowledge about adhesion-mediated signaling is growing rapidly, the mechanisms underlying force-dependent regulation of junction assembly are largely unknown. Experiments have been carried out that have started to uncover the major signaling pathways involved in the response of adhesion sites to force. Theoretical models have also been used to address the physical mechanisms underlying adhesion-mediated mechanosensing.  相似文献
