  1. We have studied the neural circuitry mediating ingestion and rejection in Aplysia using a reduced preparation that produces ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns in response to physiological stimuli.
  2. We have characterized 3 buccal ganglion motor neurons that produce specific movements of the radula and buccal mass. B8a and B8b act to close the radula. B10 acts to close the jaws and retract the radula.
  3. The patterns of activity in these neurons can be used to distinguish the ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns. B8a, B8b and B10 are active together during the ingestion-like pattern. Activity in B8a and B8b ends prior to the onset of activity in B10 during the rejection-like pattern.
  4. Our data suggest that these neurons undergo similar patterns of activity in vivo. During both feeding-like patterns, the activity and peripheral actions of B8a, B8b, and B10 are consistent with radula movements observed during ingestion and rejection. In addition, the extracellular activity produced by these neurons is consistent with neural activity observed in vivo during ingestion and rejection.
  5. Our data suggest that the different activity patterns observed in these motor neurons contribute to the different radula movements that distinguish ingestion from rejection.

  1. We are studying the neural basis of consummatory feeding behavior in Aplysia using intact, freely moving animals.
  2. Video records show that the timing of radula closure during the radula protraction-retraction cycle constitutes a major difference between ingestion (biting or swallowing) and rejection. During ingestion, the radula is closed as it retracts. During rejection, the radula is closed as it protracts.
  3. We observed two patterns of activity in nerves which are likely to mediate these radula movements. Patterns I and II are associated with ingestion and rejection, respectively, and are distinguished by the timing of radula nerve activity with respect to the onset of buccal nerve 2 activity.
  4. The association of ingestion with pattern I is maintained when the animal feeds on a polyethylene tube, the same food substrate used to elicit rejection responses. Under these conditions, pattern I is associated with either swallowing or no net tube movement.
  5. Most transitions from swallowing to rejection were preceded by one or more occurrences of pattern I in which there was no net tube movement, suggesting that these transitions can be predicted.
  6. Our data suggest that these two patterns can be used to distinguish ingestion from rejection.

  1. Intracellular recording were obtained from P-cells of the LGN of the cat. The impulse trains of a single presynaptic retinal ganglion cell and the postsynaptic P-cell were separated by band-pass-filtering and subsequent amplitude discrimination.
  2. The rates of information and transinformation for the visual channel from the eye to a ganglion cell and to the connected P-cell were calculated. Input signals to the channel were trains of light flashes of different rate, luminance and spatial distribution.
  3. Transinformation was calculated without restrictive assumptions for the code.
  4. The transient behaviour of the system in response to a flash was fully considered for information calculations. Additionally, it was ensured that the state of the (adaptive) channel was considered correctly.
  5. Information theory was applied in an extended way. The time courses of information transfer were calculated for various flash stimuli and compared with each other.

The landing response of stationary flying houseflies Musca domestica has been recorded on video tape. The leg movements were quantitatively evaluated. It could be demonstrated that:
  1. only the first two pairs of legs are involved in the reaction (Fig. 1). Prothoracic tarsi are lifted beyond the head, mesothoracic tarsi are lowered and moved sidewards (Fig. 2a and b).
  2. the movement of the tarsal tips is mainly due to an opening of one single joint per leg, i.e. the femurtibia joint of the prothoracic leg (Fig. 2c), and the coxa-femur joint of the mesothoracic leg.
  3. the landing reaction is a fixed action pattern which does not seem to require further sensory input once it is released (Fig. 4d).
  4. the landing responses to a light-off stimulus and to expanding patterns with different angular velocities are indistinguishable (compare Fig. 3a-c with Fig. 2a-c). The only parameter that is obviously dependent on the stimulus conditions, is the latency of the reaction (Fig. 4a-c).

In freely moving toads, the temporal discharge patterns of tectal and medullary neurons were observed during prey-catching.
  1. Tectal T5.2 and T8.1 neurons displayed a premotor warming up firing that in the former was addressed specifically to prey orienting or snapping and in the latter generally to almost any kind of body movement.
  2. The temporal discharge patterns of T5.2 neurons during snapping were different from those during orienting toward prey. Snapping started in the peak phase of warming up; firing was immediately terminated during the snap; thereafter some rebound activity was observed. Orienting started after the premotor warming up in the declining phase whilst the neuron kept on firing during orienting and then settled when the orienting movement was completed.
  3. In toads which were not motivated to catch prey — comparabl to immobilized ones — the discharge frequency of T5.2 neurons toward a prey stimulus revealed no such warming up.
  4. Because it is known that prey-selective T5.2 neurons are controlled by pretectal inhibitory influences, the following experiment was conducted: during recording a T5.2 neuron a pretectal lesion was applied ipsilaterally to the recording site. After a few seconds, the neuron showed a strong premotor wanning up in response to any kind of moving object, followed by prey-catching.
  5. In the medulla oblongata, different H-type neurons of the hypoglossal nucleus displayed specific discharge patterns which resembled the tongue protractor and retractor muscle activities; a third type resembled the activity of the genio/sterno-hyoid muscle, which are suggested to stabilize the hyoid bone during snapping.
  6. There were medullary M8-type neurons with properties similar to T8.1.
  7. Snapping could be triggered by electrical stimulation of the optic tectum in the representation of the frontal visual field, but not by stimulation in the hypoglossal nucleus or the adjacent medial reticular formation.
  8. A concept of a neuronal circuit for the coordination of tongue muscle contractions in response to prey is proposed.

  1. The movements of blind goldfish flown in an aircraft through vertical flight patterns show a consistent correlation with the varyingg loads as recorded by ag meter.
  2. Decreasing theg load in all tested cases caused the fish to rapidly dive downwards after an approximate delay of 0.5–1.5 sec. The opposite reaction, a tilt and movement upwards, was observed in transitions from a lower to a higherg load, though the latter reaction was not as pronounced.
  3. Because any potential influence of visual cues, swimming bladder reflexes, and changing barometric pressure was excluded by experimental precautions, we concluded that the response of the fish to varyingg loads were vestibular reflexes probably resulting from displacements of the otoliths during vertical accelerations.
  4. It is concluded from data in the literature and from the present results, that the behavioral responses resulting from static or dynamic forces are counterdirected toward the otolith displacements caused by these forces. Consequently, the behavioral, responses are counterdirected toward the gravitational pull on the animal, but must have the same direction as mechanical forces, which accelerate the whole organism and displace the otolith by inertia. It is concluded therefore, that the otolith reflexes have adaptive value only in a gravitational or centrifugal field, but are unsuitable to subserve any stabilizing function in the case of inertial forces during weightlessness.

  1. ACh, dopamine, noradrenaline, 5-HT,l-glutamate, and GABA are widely distributed in cephalopods and probably all function as neurotransmitters; octopamine also occurs and at one site is known to act as a neuromodulator.
  2. Several peptides are also present, as well as nitric oxide synthase.
  3. In the brain and sense organs cholinergic, aminergic, serotonergic and glutamatergic systems seem to be the most important.
  4. ACh is also active in the gut, vascular system and some body muscles: it is generally inhibitory. The ACh receptors are similar to the vertebrate nicotinic type.
  5. The catecholamines are important in the gut and vascular system: they are generally excitatory. The NA receptors are like the α-adrenergic subtype of vertebrates, but the nature of the DA and OA receptors is less certain.
  6. 5-HT is important in the gut but is endogenous in some chromatophore nerves and acts on receptors that seem like the vertebrate 5-HT1 type.
  7. l-glutamate is an excitatory transmitter at the chromatophore (and probably at other) nerve-muscle junctions and is an extremely strong candidate for being the excitatory transmitter at the squid giant synapse. There are NMDA receptors on Schwann-cells but the receptors on neurons and muscles are like the vertebrate kainate type.
  8. Little is known about the mode of action of cephalopod peptides; nor has it ever been shown that they co-exist with conventional transmitters in these animals.
  9. The structure of one (FMRFamide) receptor has been elucidated, but apart from this nothing is known of the molecular biology of receptors in cephalopods.

  1. The neutral red technique was employed to study the rate of filtration in Katelysia opima.
  2. The weight specific water filtration was found to be greater for younger clams compared to the older ones.
  3. The rate of water filtration increased with decreasing salinity.
  4. Water filtration was found to increase as temperature increased, reaching a maximum at 35°C. but then sharply decreasing at 39°C.
  5. Light had no significant effect on the rate of filtration.
  6. Suspended matter was found to affect the rate of water filtration.
  7. The rate of filtration was low at high pH and high in low pH.
  8. The rate of water filtration was found to be faster during high tide than during low tide.
  9. The presence of the parasitic crab, Pennotheris sp., in the mantle cavity of clams had a marked effect on the particle filtration.
  10. Accidental cut of the siphon tips had no effect on the rate of filtration.

The Mauthner (M-) cells, a bilateral pair of medullary neurons in fish, initiate the characteristic “C-start” predatory escape response of teleosts. Similar movements have been described during hatching, social interactions, and feeding. M-cell firing, however, has not been correlated directly with these other behaviors. The objective of this study was to determine whether the M-cell, in addition to escape, plays a role in feeding.
  1. Goldfish were chronically implanted with electrodes positioned near the axon cap of one of the two M-cells. Subsequently, M-cell activity was monitored for up to 8 days while fish were surface feeding on live crickets.
  2. The M-cell fires and the fish performs a C-shaped flexion in association with the terminal phase of prey capture. Thus, the M-cell is active in the context of at least two behaviors, predator escape and prey capture, and may be considered a part of behaviorally shared neural circuitry.
  3. For the goldfish, Mauthner-initiated flexions during feeding rapidly remove the prey from the water's surface and minimizes the fish's own susceptibility to surface predation. Other species may possess a diverse repertoire of Mauthner-mediated feeding behaviors that depend on their adaptive specializations for predation. Moreover, group competition between predators and their prey may have facilitated a “neural arms race” for M-cell morphology and physiology.

  1. A method for the direct recording of the PEP efflux from isolated mitochondria is described.
  2. This method has been used to show the stimulation of PEP efflux by externally added Mn++ ions.
  3. Valinomycin, uncoupler and oleate were also shown to stimulate PEP efflux.
  4. Valinomycin caused an increase in the internal concentration of both PEP and citrate.
  5. The results indicate that the major pathway of PEP synthesis in isolated mitochondria is via PEP carboxykinase and the results do not call for an unknown pathway of metabolism.
  6. Two interactions between PEP and citrate are described; competition for the mitochondrial interior and the stimulation of PEP production by citrate.

Pharmacological and toxicological studies undertaken on drugs that affect the brain are frequently performed in disparate species under various experimental conditions, at doses often greatly in excess of those expected to be administered to humans, and the findings are extrapolated implicitly or explicitly with scant regard to differences in the biodisposition of the drugs. Such considerations are necessary since:
  1. Species;
  2. Strain;
  3. Gender;
  4. Route;
  5. Dose;
  6. Frequency and time of administration;
  7. Temperature;
  8. Coadministration of drugs; and
  9. Surgical manipulation
are but some of the factors that have been shown to influence the kinetics and metabolism of drugs. This article, using MDMA and other phenylethylamines as examples, provides evidence for the need to measure the exoosure of the drugs and their active metabolites in blood and brain (toxicokinetics) in order that conclusions based only on dynamic, biochemical, or histological evidence are more pertinent. Further, the combined use of toxicokinetic-dynamic modeling can lead to a better appreciation of the mechanisms involved and a more useful approach to the calculation of safety margins.  相似文献

Androgenic hormones seem to be of beneficial effects on sports performance:
  • - they increase motivation, will, aggressiveness, resistance to the stress and to the fatigue, leading to an increase of the training quantity,
  • - they increase bone mineralization and probably mechanical resistance,
  • - they stimulate the bone marrow and so, with the erythropoietin, the erythropoiesis,
  • - they increase the tendancy to hyperglycemia, but with a decrease of the tolerance to the glucose,
  • - they stimulate the fatty acids mobilization from the adipose tissue, for their utilization in the muscle during the exercise,
  • - they participate, for the trained sportmen, to a better gestion of the muscle glycogen storage: their utilization during exercise is decreased,
  • - they increase the lean body mass, with an increase of the protein synthesis and a decrease of the protein catabolism, leading also to an increase of the muscle force under training. There is no beneficial effect upon the tendons,
  • - they have an immunomodulation action.

    The distributions of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in a moss community-soil system developed on a naked region in Rundvågskollane (69050'S, 39009'E), East Antarctica, were investigated in order to analyze the flow of matter in an Antarctic terrestrial ecosystem.
    1. The moss community was formed from many moss blocks of different sizes and was composed ofBryum pseudotriquetrum (Hedw.) Gaertn., Meyer et Scherb.,Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. andGrimmia lawiana J. H. Willis. The surface of the community was covered with cyanobacteria.
    2. It was estimated that nitrogen fixed by cyanobacteria flowed from these organisms to the moss and that little nitrogen was transported within the moss body.
    3. A large amount of phosphorus existed in the soil. The moss community had a high phosphorus content although the amount itself was relatively little due to the small phytomass.
    4. It seems that absorption of phosphorus from soil is difficult for moss, because of the paucity of water necessary for the movement of phosphorus and the suppressed growth of moss due to the arid conditions.

    1. An ecological study of the Ponggol Estuary was conducted from July 1965 to June 1966 and the seasonal data on physical, chemical and biological characteristics were presented.
    2. The Ponggol River represents a short, narrow and shallow estuary in Singapore. The river mouth is open throughout the year and water from eastern Johore Straits drains in twice a day at high tide. The upper reach, however, is left exposed at low tide.
    3. The Ponggol River was classified as a vertically and laterally homogeneous estuary and was found to exhibit a mesohaline to polyhaline environment.
    4. Significant hydrological gradients from the river mouth 10 the upper reach were noted in the river system. Salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH increased towards the mouth of the river and other parameters such as nutrients, dissolved organic matter and turbidity increased towards the source.
    5. Although the river received organic pollutants at the upper reach the estuary was able to discharge them fairly rapidly through regular flushing by the tides. The transient rise of organic matter did not appear to impart any serious affect on the biota in the estuary.
    6. Over 98% of the phytoplankton consisted of diatoms, most of which were brought into the estuary from eastern Johore Straits. Freshwater forms were relatively few.
    7. Phytoplankton biomass was considerably higher than the adjoining waters. and was reduced at the upper reach due to high turbidity of the water.
    8. 80% of the zooplankton was composed of dinoflagellates,Difflugia, copepods and bivalve larvae dominating at all sections of the estuary.
    9. Percentage composition of the zooplankton showed that dinoflagellates and copepod nauplii predominated at high tide whileDifflugia and bivalve larvae were abundant at low tide.
    10. Zooplankton standing crop, in general, was higher towards the source at high tide but the reverse was found at low tide, i.e. standing crop increased towards the river mouth. This was attributed to the process of concentration.
    11. Species composition of zooplankton was found to be more or less similar to that of the eastern Johore Straits.
    12. The nekton consisted predominantly of small and juvenile fish. Close correlation of fish and copepods was found to be statistically valid and it was concluded that the fish entered the estuary to feed rather than to spawn.
    13. The squids formed an important catch of the beach seine unit and were caught throughout the year.
    14. The fish population could be grouped into four categories: estuarine components, euryhaline components, marine components and migratory components.
    15. Benthic invertebrates were abundant. Commercially important species consisted of prawns,Metapenaeus andPenaeus, and crabs,Neptunus pelagicus andScylla serrata.
    16. The river bed was inhabited predominantly by molluscs and the distribution resembled that of the sheltered shore of muddy-sand type.

    Synthetic sulfuric acid is used in a wide range of applications in fine chemical industry. Despite an already performed optimization of input amounts, used sulfuric acid is still a quantitatively important waste by-product. As a result, different utilization technologies for used sulfuric acid exist:
    1. production of gypsum
    2. thermal reductive cracking
    3. thermal cracking and oxidation
    This makes an LCA study of this waste by-product quite interesting. In this paper:
  • ? the starting point for a comparative LCA of the above mentioned utilization technologies at a concrete situation is explained, in a work of Ciba-Geigy Corp.
  • ? a short summary of the comparative LCA is presented
  • ? lessons learned from performing the LCA and using it in a decision process are described.

    A simple model of brightness encoding in the retina is proposed that explains:
    1. the differential phase shift needed to minimize brightness flicker in a homogeneous red-green counterphase flickering field.
    2. the modulation transfer function at low temporal frequencies for flickering lights of one dominant wavelength against the background of light with another dominant wavelength.
    3. the occurrence of the Hering, the Purkinje and the Hess afterimages.
    4. the ability of monochromatic light to provoke the Purkinje afterimage (Bidwell's ghost).
    It is shown that these effects can be treated as pure brightness effects; or that the signal processing of the opponent system is irrelevant to the results. A physiological substrate for the model is tentatively indicated. Some suggestions are made concerning possible experimental checks of the model.  相似文献

    1. We have studied the development of the refractive state in young barn owls (Tyto alba pratincola). Strikingly, the eyes had severe refractive errors shortly after lid opening (which occurred around day 14 after hatching; average from 6 owls: 13.83 ± 1.47 days). Refractive errors vanished in the subsequent one or two weeks (Fig. 1, Fig. 2).
    2. Refractive errors did not differ by more than 1 diopter (D) in both eyes of an individual (Fig. 2). Thus, non-visual control of eye growth was sufficient to produce non-random refractions. However, visual input was finally required to adjust the optical system to emmetropia.
    3. Using in-vivo A-scan ultrasonography of ocular dimensions (Fig. 4A), photokeratometric measurements of corneal radius of curvature (Fig. 4B), and frozen sections of excised eyes (Fig. 3), we developed paraxial schematic eye models which described age-dependent changes in ocular parameters and were applicable through the ages from lid opening to fledging (Table 1). A schematic eye for the adult barn owl (European subspecies: Tyto alba alba) is also provided. Eye sizes in an adult owl of the American (Tyto alba pratincola) and the European subspecies (T. alba alba) were similar despite of different body weights (500 g and 350 g, respectively).
    4. The schematic eyes were used to test which ocular parameters might have caused the recovery from refractive errors. However, none of the ocular dimensions measured underwent obvious changes in their growth curves as visual input became available. Apparently, coordinated growth of several ocular components produced emmetropia.
    5. From the schematic eye model, the developmental changes in image brightness and image magnification were calculated (Fig. 5). In barn owl eyes, image size was not quite as extreme as in the tawny owl or the great horned owl. However, the image was larger and the f/number was lower than in diurnal birds of comparable weight (pigeon, chicken). The observation supports a conclusion that image size is maximised in owls to permit a higher degree of photoreceptor convergence for higher light sensitivity at dusk while spatial acuity remains comparable to diurnal birds with smaller eyes.

    The observed wavelength-dependent variations in the phototaxis of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus inform us only partially about the spectral characteristics of the sensory pigment of the eye, since these variations are also linked to the absorption spectrum of the accessory pigment(s).
  • The absence of phototaxis between 420 nm and 500 nm is due to the lack of sensitivity of the sensory pigments at these wavelengths
  • The absence of response between 650 nm and 700 nm is due to a drop in the absorbance of the accessory pigments, which consequently no longer play a screening role at these wavelengths
  • The existence of oriented responses between 350 nm and 420 nm and between 500 nm and 650 nm, is due to the joint intervention of the two types of pigments at these wavelengths

    1. Protease and amylase activity in the digestive system ofBarbus paludinosus Peters (Pisces, Cyprinidae) has been investigated.
    2. Chromatographic analysis showed seven amino acids to be present in both the anterior and posterior intestine. Only leucine, phenylalanine, valine, glycine and aspartic acid were positively identified.
    3. In the anterior intestine chromatography revealed two sugars, but only one in the posterior intestine which was identified as glucose.
    4. The pH of the intestinal fluid was found to be 5.8 and 7.8 for the fore and hind gut respectively, This correlates well with the enzyme pH optima found in in vitro experiments.
    5. Protease and amylase activity was found throughout the digestive tract. Maximum proteolytic activity being present in the anterior intestine. Amylase activity is similar in both regions of the gut.
    6. Correlation between the digestive enzymes and the fishes diet is briefly discussed.
