1. The interrelationship between food intake, body weight and oxygen consumption was analysed at 25 degrees C in growing rats. 3. The experiment was divided into two phases lasting four weeks each. During the first phase the animals were subjected to energy restriction and during the second phase they were allowed ad lib energy intake. Four groups of rats were studied: Control with ad lib food intake and three restricted groups R4, R5, and R6 which received during the first phase 4, 5, and 6 g per day of stock diet in a single meal. 3. The results showed a decrease in body weight and oxygen consumption during the restriction period and a recovering of the latter during the refeeding period, without body weight recovering. 4. It is concluded that an energy conservation mechanism is present during food restriction and for some time after refeeding.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the lack of metabolic thermal acclimation ability in tropical and subtropical amphibians is dependent on season and investigated the effects of body size, sex, time of day, and season on metabolic rates in Rana latouchii. The males were acclimated at 15 degrees, 20 degrees, and 25 degrees C, and their oxygen consumption was measured at 15 degrees, 20 degrees, 25 degrees, and 30 degrees C in all four seasons, with the exception that we did not measure oxygen consumption at 30 degrees C in winter frogs. We also acclimated the males at 30 degrees C in summer for investigating diel variation of metabolic rate. The females were acclimated at 20 degrees and 25 degrees C, and their oxygen consumption was measured at 15 degrees , 20 degrees , 25 degrees , and 30 degrees C in summer. Our results showed that metabolic rates of R. latouchii differed by time of day, season, and acclimation temperature but did not differ by sex if the results were adjusted for differences in body mass. Summer males exhibited a 26%-48% increase in metabolic rates from the lowest values in the seasons. There was a trend of increased oxygen consumption in cold-acclimated males, but it was significant only at 15 degrees and 25 degrees C in summer, autumn, and winter. These results support the hypothesis that thermal acclimation of metabolism is seasonally dependent, which has not been reported in other tropical and subtropical amphibians.  相似文献

The intensity of adult diapause in Pyrrhocoris apterus was measured in two series of experiments as the duration of pre-oviposition period at a constant temperature of 25 degrees C after transfer from short (12L:12D) to long day conditions (18L:6D). Higher diapause intensity was induced with a thermoperiod than at constant temperatures. After the induction throughout larval instars 3-5 and during 4 weeks of adult life at short days and a thermoperiod of 25/15 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 30+/-4 and 26+/-3 days. After induction at constant 25 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 22+/-3 and 23+/-4 days, while after induction at constant 20 degrees C it was 17+/-4 and 19+/-4 days. Induction at a lower constant temperature of 20 degrees C was thus followed by a less intense diapause than the induction at a higher constant temperature of 25 degrees C. These counterintuitive results are discussed. The oxygen consumption rate measured at experimental temperatures prior to transfer from short to long days was higher at thermoperiodic conditions than at constant temperatures and it was similar at constant 20 and 25 degrees C. Thus, the oxygen consumption rate measured prior to the transfer was highest (indication of the least intense diapause) in the insects that showed later, after the transfer to long days, the longest pre-oviposition period (indication of the most intense diapause). Within the first two days after transfer to constant 25 degrees C, oxygen consumption rate measured at 25 degrees C decreased in the thermoperiodic insects, while it transiently increased in insects from constant 20 degrees C. Two days and later after the transfer, oxygen consumption rate was similar in all groups. Cold hardiness was not correlated with diapause intensity. The low lethal temperature in diapausing insects was correlated with the night temperature during diapause induction.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to determine the role of nitric oxide in mediating autonomic and behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups on postnatal days 1-2, 5-6, and 10-11. For an experiment, each pup received a subcutaneous injection of vehicle, NG-nitro-D-arginine methyl ester (D-NAME; 100 mg/kg), or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 100 mg/kg) before being placed in a metabolic chamber or in a thermocline with a linear temperature gradient of 23 to 43 degrees C. In the metabolic chamber, oxygen consumption and core temperature were measured as ambient temperature was decreased from 40 to 15 degrees C over a 60-min period. Decreasing ambient temperature elicited an increase in oxygen consumption in all age groups that received vehicle or d-NAME. The lower critical temperature and peak oxygen consumption upon exposure to cold after vehicle were 41 +/- 10 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 30 degrees C, 43 +/- 12 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 28 degrees C, and 55 +/- 11 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 25 degrees C in the 1- to 2-, 5- to 6-, and 10- to 11-day-old pups, respectively. Administration of L-NAME abolished the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 1- to 2- and 5- to 6-day-old pups and significantly attenuated the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 10- to 11-day-old pups. Selected ambient temperature in the thermocline was not significantly affected by prior administration of D-NAME or L-NAME compared with vehicle. Thus our data provide evidence that the nitric oxide system plays a role in mediating autonomic but not behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups during early postnatal maturation.  相似文献

The effects of temperature acclimation, acute temperature variation and progressive hypoxia on oxygen consumption rates (VO2) were determined for the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. In the first experiment, after acclimation to 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks, VO2 was determined at 5 degrees C increments from 5 to 45 degrees C. VO2 increased in all three acclimation groups from 5 to 30 degrees C, corresponding to the normal ambient temperature range for this species. Mussels displayed imperfect temperature compensation at temperatures above 15 degrees C, but exhibited little acclimatory ability below 15 degrees C. In the hypoxia experiment, VO2 was determined over the course of progressive hypoxia, from full saturation (oxygen tension [PO2]=160 Torr [21.3 kPa]) to a PO2 at which oxygen uptake ceased (<10 Torr [1.3 kPa]). Mussels were acclimated to either 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks and their respiratory response to progressive hypoxia was measured at three test temperatures (5, 15 and 25 degrees C). The degree of oxygen regulation increased with increasing test temperature, particularly from 5 to 15 degrees C, but decreased with increasing acclimation temperature. The decreased metabolic rate observed for warm-acclimated animals, particularly in the upper portion of the temperature range of the zebra mussel, may allow for conservation of organic energy stores during warm summer months. Compared to other freshwater bivalves, D. polymorpha is a relatively poor oxygen regulator, corresponding with its preference for well-oxygenated aquatic habitats. In addition, a new quantitative method for determining the degree of oxygen regulation is presented.  相似文献

1. In rats acclimated to 23 degrees C (RT rats) or 5 degrees C (CA rats), core temperature (Tc), tail temperature (Tt) and oxygen consumption (VO2) were measured during exposure to a hypergravic field. 2. Rats were exposed for 5.5 h to a 3 g field while ambient temperature (Ta) was varied. For the first 2 h, Ta was 25 degrees C; then Ta was raised to 34 degrees C for 1.5 h. During this period of warm exposure, Tc increased 4 degrees C in both RT and CA rats. Finally, Ta was returned to 25 degrees C for 2 h, and Tc decreased toward the levels measured prior to warm exposure. 3. In a second experiment at 3 g, RT and CA rats were exposed to cold (12 degrees C) after two hours at 25 degrees C. During the one hour cold exposure, Tc fell 1.5 degrees C in RT and 0.5 degree C in CA rats. After cold exposure, when ambient temperature was again 25 degrees C, Tc of RT and CA rats returned toward the levels measured prior to the thermal disturbance. 4. Rats appear to regulate their temperature, albeit at a lower level, in a 3 g field.  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption and blood glucose were determined from freshwater fishes, Prochilodus scrofa and Cyprinus carpio, exposed at high temperatures for 1 hr. Prochilodus scrofa had a significantly higher rate of oxygen consumption at 30 degrees C than at 25 degrees C, and carp higher at 25 degrees C than at 30 degrees C. Blood glucose was significantly higher for Cyprinus carpio than for Prochilodus scrofa at 25 and 30 degrees C; however, after exposure to these temperatures for 1 hr blood glucose did not change significantly for both species. The results suggest that these interspecific variations may be linked to the differences between native and foreign fishes and their way of life.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare the effect of periodic cooling during the establishment of a functional pituitary-thyroid axis at days 11-14 of incubation and at other developmental stages, on the subsequent thyroid hormone response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). In the first and second experiment chick embryos were cooled for 6 hr/day to 30 degrees C from day 11 till 14 and from day 15 till 18 respectively, whereas control groups were incubated throughout at 37.8 degrees C. In both experiments the thyroxine (T4) response upon TRH in 19 day-old embryos was higher in the previously cold treated embryos, according to the percentages of increase. However, the higher T4 response in the cold treated animals disappeared in 1 or 7 day-old chicks hatched from the 2nd experiment, but remained present in chicks of the same ages in the 1st experiment. In a third experiment the T4 response to TRH injection immediately and 3 and 8 days after a temperature treatment (25 degrees C or 12 degrees C) for one week on four weeks old broiler chickens was found to be similar in both temperature groups. In all experiments there was a concomitant triiodothyronine (T3) increase after TRH injection, but differences between experimental groups were observed at days 15 and 19 of incubation and immediately after the postnatal temperature treatment. As an overall conclusion the results indicate that cold treatment only during the establishment of the hypothalamo-hypophysial control of thyroid function can have a long lasting effect by enhancing the T4 response to TRH injection.  相似文献

1. Resting metabolic rates at 25 degrees C were determined for juvenile midland painted turtles that had recently been fed or fasted for 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 14 or 19 days. 2. Recently fed turtles had an oxygen consumption rate of 211 microliter O2/g/hr. This decreased by 32% on the first day of the fast and by 69% by the 19th day. 3. Mass of the turtles (4.91-14.30 g) did not affect the rate of oxygen consumption (VO2).  相似文献

Acutely administered thyroxine caused significant increase in the whole body rate of oxygen consumption of C. ocellatus at temperatures between 4 and 25 degrees C. No significant increase in the oxygen consumption was observed over the voluntary body temperature range of 30-40 degrees C.  相似文献

Fed animals have a higher resting metabolic rate in the thermoneutral zone than fasting ones. The metabolic increase is due to the specific dynamic action of food. With a decline of environmental temperature this increase in metabolism either declines or remains unchanged; decisive is whether the heat is used for thermoregulation or not (Mejsnar and Jansky 1971). The objective of our work was to find out to what extent a single intake of a diet with a different ratio of nutrients can influence resting metabolism in the golden hamster and whether this heat can be used for thermoregulation in the cold. Female golden hamsters aged 6-8 weeks kept at a constant temperature of 22 +/-1 degrees C with twelve-hour alternation of light (6 a.m. - 6 p.m.) and darkness ( 6 p.m. - 6 a.m.) were used for the experiments. The oxygen consumption was assessed after a single intake of a standard, high-carbohydrate (76 cal.% starch), high-fat (80 cal.% margarine) and high-protein (82 cal.% casein) diet-for detailed composition see Fábry (1959). The food was given at 6.m. after previous 20 hours of fasting. Animals were then transferred into the respiration chamber and kept there for three hours, including one hour when they were left to settle down; during this period the oxygen consumption was not measured. Oxygen consumption measurement started at 9 a.m. and lasted till 11 a.m. The metabolism of the animals at rest was assessed at temperatures of 10, 20 and 30 degrees C by measuring the oxygen consumption by the interferometric method (Wollschitt et al. 1935). The results are expressed in ml of oxygen per g of body weight per hour. The relationship between the metabolism at rest and environmental temperatures in hamsters given a single dose of standard, high-proetin, high-fat or high-carbohydrate diet is apparent from Table 1. The maximum increase of oxygen consumption after administration of the experimental diets was found at a temperature of 30 degrees C. At an environmental temperature of 20 degrees C the administration of the high-protein and high-fat diet causes roughly the same increase of metabolism. The high-carbohydrate diet increase is only one third of thevalues found, in the remaining two diets at the same temperature and is non-significant. At the environmental temperature of 10 degrees C all the diets used increased the oxygen consumption insignificantly. The changes in metabolism at different environmental temperatures after administration of various diets expressed as percentage of metabolism at 30 degrees C in animals fed the standard diet indicate that the specific dynamic action of the high-protein and high-fats diets is lower at lowered temperatures. We may thus assume that the heat produced as a result of specific dynamic action of the high-protein and high-fat diets is perhaps used for thermoregulation. The role of specific dynamic action of high-carbohydrate diet for thermoregulation is not clear from our experiments. The role of specific dynamic action of food was assessed by several authors...  相似文献

Eighth instar female house crickets at 35°C developed faster, gained slightly more wet weight, and consumed less food, water, and oxygen than at 25°C. The duration of the 8th stadium at 25°C was 13 days (undisturbed), but was 14 days when disturbed by daily weighing. The duration of the 8th stadium at 30°C was 8 days and at 35°C was 6 days. During the first half of the 8th stadium at 25, 30, and 35°C, there was a high rate of food and water consumption resulting in statistically equal maximum dry weight achievement (124 mg). Respiratory quotients greater than one during this time indicated the conversion of ingested carbohydrate to fat. During the latter half of the 8th stadium, food and water consumption declined and the crickets lost weight. The period of weight loss was proportionally much longer at 25°C than at 30 or 35°C. Respiratory quotients lower than 1.0 during the latter half of the 8th stadium at 30 and 35°C indicated the metabolism of stored lipids. The respiratory quotient at 25°C never fell below 1.0, possibly because some food remained in the gut. The absorption efficiency was not influenced by temperature (25–35°C). Though the caloric content of the faeces was lower at 25°C than at 30 or 35°C, which correlated to the much longer time for food passage at 25°C than at 35°C, the difference in total calories egested was insufficient to alter the absorption efficiency. A longer period of reduced feeding and greater dry weight loss during the latter half of the 8th stadium at 25°C resulted in a lower metabolic efficiency at 25°C than at 30 or 35°C. Eighth instar crickets in response to a step-function transfer from 30°C–25 or 35°C showed an immediate (<1 hr) and complete metabolic adjustment which was not affected by the temperature history during the 7th stadium. House crickets did not exhibit temperature acclimation in the range 20–40°C, the metabolic rate being determined by ambient temperature. The Q10 for oxygen consumption in the range 20–40°C was about 2.  相似文献

Ethanol was administered chronically for 14 days to male Sprague-Dawley rats. Day 15 was ethanol-free. On day 16 the rats received 25 mg of thiopental per kilogram (intravenously). One minute after the injection, the ethanol-treated rats showed lower blood levels of thiopental and higher liver levels of the drug than control rats given sucrose in place of ethanol. Samples of blood drawn 5 and 10 min after injection showed no significant difference in thiopental levels between the ethanol and control groups. The ethanol-treated group slept for a significantly shorter period of time. It is concluded that chronic ethanol consumption for 14 days decreases the pharmacological effects of thiopental and alters its initial distribution in the body.  相似文献

Glucagon-like peptide (7–36) amide (GLP-1) acutely inhibits food and water consumption in rats after intrace-rebroventricular (icv) administration. To assess the potential for desensitization of these effects, we investigated the effects of chronic icv administration of GLP-1 on food consumption and body weight in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and Zucker (fa/fa) obese rats. In vitro functional densensitization of the GLP-1 receptor was not observed after overnight exposure of Rin m5F insulinoma cells to GLP-1 at concentrations up to 10 nM. Administration of GLP-1 to SD rats (30 ug icv twice a day for 6 days) resulted in significant reductions in 24-hour food consumption each day (25 ±1%). Continuous icv infusion of GLP-1 for 7 and 14 days significantly inhibited cumulative food consumption and reduced body weight in SD rats. In the genetically obese Zucker rat, chronic dosing with GLP-1 (30 ug icv) once a day for 6 days caused significant reductions in food consumption each day and a reduction in body weight. These results indicate that the GLP-1 pathways in the central nervous system controlling food consumption do not desensitize after chronic exposure to GLP-1 and suggest that agonists of the central GLP-1 receptor may be effective agents for the treatment of obesity.  相似文献

Interaction between exercise training and cold acclimation in rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Five groups of 10 rats were used. Group A included sedentary rats kept at 24 degrees C, group B exercised-trained rats and group C rats exposed at -15 degrees C for 2 h every day and kept at 24 degrees C for the remaining time. These 3 groups were kept on this regimen for 10 weeks. In addition group D was acclimated to cold (2 h.d-1 at -15 degrees C) for 6 weeks and subsequently deacclimated at 24 degrees C for 4 weeks. Group E was also acclimated to cold for 6 weeks and during the deacclimation, at 24 degrees C period which lasted 4 weeks, the animals were exercised 2 h per day. Following the 10 week experimental period all animals were sacrificed and DNA and protein content of the IBAT as well as its total mass were measured. The results show significant increases in the cold adapted group. Exercise training which had no effect on brown adipose tissue IBAT at room temperature, caused an accelerated reduction in weight, DNA and protein content of the BAT in rats previously acclimated to cold. In spite of this, the thermogenic response to noradrenaline was significantly enhanced in the group which exercised during the deacclimation period. It is suggested that tissues other than IBAT may explain this enhanced heat production capacity.  相似文献

The present study demonstrated the high bioavailability and antiperoxidative capacity of the natural beta-carotene isomer mixture of Dunaliella bardawil compared with synthetic beta-carotene under alcohol-induced oxidative stress. Weanling rats were adapted to ethanol by increasing ethanol levels in their drinking water to 30% at 5% intervals per week; other rats received water with no added ethanol. One water-drinking group and one alcohol-drinking group with no dietary carotene were used as controls. Two water-drinking groups were supplemented with 1 g/kg diet beta-carotene either from Dunaliella or a synthetic source, and due to reduced food intake, two ethanol-fed groups received 2 g beta-carotene per kilogram of diet from each source. Following 3 months of ethanol consumption, both carotene sources were found to prevent ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation as expressed by the hepatic conjugated oxidized dienes level. However, in the algal-fed rats, hepatic carotene and vitamin A levels were higher. In addition to a lower performance of the group fed ethanol and synthetic beta-carotene, there were three deaths in this group.  相似文献

The minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) was raised up to the stage of swim bladder inflation at temperatures between 10 degrees C and 25 degrees C, and the time of development significantly decreased at higher temperatures. Accordingly, initiation of cardiac activity was observed at day 2 in 25 degrees C animals and at day 4 in 12.5 degrees C animals. Only a minor increase in body mass was observed during the incubation period, and, at the end of the incubation period, animals raised at 25 degrees C did not have a significantly lower body mass compared with animals raised at 15 degrees C. Metabolic activity, determined as the rate of oxygen consumption of a larva, increased from 3.3 to 19.5 nmol/h during development at 15 degrees C and from 5.6 to 47.6 nmol/h during development at 25 degrees C. Heart rate showed a clear correlation to developmental stage as well as to developmental temperature, but at the onset of cardiac activity, diastolic ventricular volume and also stroke volume were higher at the lower temperatures. Furthermore, stroke volume increased with development, except for the group incubated at 12.5 degrees C, in which stroke volume decreased with development. Initial cardiac output showed no correlation to incubation temperature. Although metabolic activity increased severalfold during development from egg to the stage of swim bladder inflation at 15 degrees C and at 25 degrees C, weight-specific cardiac output increased only by approximately 40% with proceeding development. At 12.5 degrees C, cardiac output remained almost constant until opening of the swim bladder. The data support the notion that oxygen transport is not the major function of the circulatory system at this stage of development. The changes in heart rate with temperature appear to be due to the intrinsic properties of the pacemaker; there was no indication for a regulated response.  相似文献

Relationship of body weight, imposed fasting, temperature, light intensity, and oxygen concentration to oxygen consumption in Porcellio laevis and Armadillidium vulgare has been investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. It was observed that (1) the metabolic response in the two species to temperature change was a uniform increase of oxygen consumption with increasing temperature from 15 degrees C to 60 degrees C. Beyond 30 degrees C, the oxygen consumption in each species fell, and the thermal death point was reached at about 40 degrees C. (2) The response to decreasing oxygen concentrations was a corresponding decrease in oxygen consumption. Armadillidium vulgare was a partial regulator while Porcellio laevis was able to conform its internal state to the changing oxygen levels. (3) In each species there was a decrease in metabolic rate with increasing body weight. (4) On the basis of their general activity level and oxygen consumption rate, Porcellio appeared to be a nocturnal species, while Armadillidium had a day active metabolism.  相似文献

The effects of ambient temperatures (T(a)) from 10 degrees to 35 degrees C on metabolism, ventilation, and oxygen extraction were examined for the southern brown bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus). Oxygen consumption (VO2) followed the pattern typical for endotherms, decreasing with increasing T(a) from 10 degrees to 25 degrees C. It did not significantly change between Ta=25 degrees and 35 degrees C (the thermoneutral zone). VO2 was approximately 2.4 times higher at Ta=10 degrees C (0.967 mL O(2) g(-1) h(-1)) compared with basal (0.410 mL O(2) g(-1) h(-1)) at Ta=30 degrees C. While the metabolic rates of the bandicoots were basal at Ta=30 degrees C, respiratory frequency (f(R)) was 24.6 breaths min(-1), tidal volume (V(T)) was 7.79 mL, minute volume (V(I)) was 191.3 mL min(-1), and oxygen extraction efficiency (EO2) was 26.8%. Increased VO2 at Ta< or =25 degrees C was associated with a large increase in V(I) due to increases in V(T) and f(R). A greater proportion of the change was due to the increase in tidal volume. EO2 was constant at approximately 26% for all T(a) up to and including 30 degrees C. At Ta=35 degrees C, EO2 decreased to 17.7%, f(R) increased to 35.6 breaths min(-1), and V(T) decreased to 7.22 mL. The metabolic and ventilatory physiology of the southern brown bandicoot are typical of an unspecialized medium-sized marsupial.  相似文献

The frequency of feeding in the field is variable in sea urchins, ranging from nearly continuous to diel or intermittent. It is essential to know the effect of feeding interval on physiological and metabolic processes to understand the basis for production. Lytechinus variegatus (50 mm horizontal diameter) were collected in January 1999 and held in closed-circuit aquaria at 25 degrees C and 35 per thousand salinity. After 9 days without food, individuals were fed one of three treatments: food available ad libitum, food available for 1 day every 2 days or food available for 1 day every 4 days for 28 days. The rate of food consumption per day of all individuals was high the first week of feeding. It then decreased to a lower, constant rate in those fed ad libitum but remained high in those fed one day every 2 or 4 days. The total amount eaten was directly related to frequency of feeding. The apparent dry matter digestibility (absorption efficiency) did not vary with frequency of feeding. As the total amount of energy absorbed was directly related to the frequency of feeding, the increase in the rate of food consumption does not compensate for a decrease in frequency of feeding. Gonad production efficiency was directly related to frequency of feeding. Gonad gross production (assimilation) efficiencies were 8.4, 3.9 and 3.4% for individuals fed every day, or fed one day every 2 and 4 days, respectively. The corresponding gonad net assimilation efficiencies were 12.5, 5.5, and 4.8%. A decrease in frequency of food availability results in use of a greater proportion of the food consumed for maintenance and less for gonad production.  相似文献
