We evaluated the combined effects of algal (Chlorella vulgaris) food levels (low, 0.5 × 106 (or 2.9 μg C ml−1); and high, 1 × 106 cells ml−1 (or 5.8 μg C ml−1)) and zinc concentrations (0, 0.125, and 0.250 mg l−1 of ZnCl2) on the competition between two common planktonic rotifers Anuraeopsis fissa and Brachionus rubens using their population growth. Median lethal concentration data (LC50) (mean ± 95% confidence intervals) showed that B. rubens was more resistant to zinc (0.554 ± 0.08 mg l−1) than A. fissa (0.315 ± 0.07 mg l−1). A. fissa when grown alone or with Zn was always numerically more abundant than B. rubens. When grown in the absence of zinc, under low- and high-food levels, the peak abundances of A. fissa varied from 251 ± 24 to 661 ± 77 ind. ml−1, respectively, and the corresponding maxima for B. rubens were 52 ± 3 and 102 ± 18 ind. ml−1. At a given food level, competition for food reduced the peak abundances of both rotifers considerably. Increase in Zn concentration also lowered the rotifer abundances. The impact of zinc on competition between the two-rotifer species was evident at low-food level, mainly for A. fissa. At zinc concentrations of 0 and 0.125 mg l−1, the populations of both rotifers continued to grow for about 10 days, but thereafter B. rubens began to decline. Role of zinc on the competitive outcome of the two species is discussed in relation to the changing algal densities in natural water bodies.  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol–sodium alginate (PVA–SA) matrix was fabricated and red algae Jania rubens was embedded for removal of lead from aqueous solutions. The Pb(II) uptake rate was rapid primarily at 1 h and equilibrium was achieved within 2 h. The optimum pH was 5, the data were well fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich models, and RL values are in the range of 0.1–0.38. The sorption capacity (qe) of PVA–calcium alginate (CA)–J. rubens matrix increased from 10.77 to 37.195 mg g?1 with increasing Pb(II) concentration from 24.86 to 98.75 mg L?1 at the temperature of 30°C and pH 5. The sorption capacity (qe) and maximum biosorption (qm) were noted as 37.179 ± 0.32 and 71.43 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second-order model. The reaction is endothermic, is spontaneous, and increases in randomness. The functional groups present on matrix, i.e., –OH, –C–N, –C–O,–CO–NH, –NH2, –SH, and –C–OH, were intensely involved in the process. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed the morphological changes due to adsorption of Pb(II) on and inside of PVA–CA–J. rubens matrix. Desorption study indicates the efficient regeneration of PVA–CA–J. rubens biomass matrix for three cycles and is a promising matrix for removal of Pb(II) and can be used in continuous systems.  相似文献

Using population densities and growth rates as criteria, we studied interactions between the epizoic rotifer Brachionus rubens and each of three cladoceran species differing in size and reproductive rates — Daphnia carinata, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi. In all mixed — species experiments, B. rubens existed in both the epizoic mode, attached to the cladoceran host, and in the free-swimming mode. Rotifer population growth rates were significantly depressed in the presence of M. macrocopa, presumably as a consequence of exploitative and interference competition. The largest cladoceran, D. carinata probably did not suppress B. rubens, because the epizoic component of the rotifer population escaped from the deleterious effects of mechanical interference. Peak population numbers and initial population growth rates reached by all three cladocerans were lower in the presence of B. rubens, probably because of the adverse effects of the epizoic infestation, which was maximal on D. carinata and least on C. rigaudi. In mixed-species cultures of D. carinata and M. macrocopa, the presence of B. rubens helped D. carinata coexist with M. macrocopa, which otherwise would have suppressed the Daphnia.  相似文献

The intensity of attendance by a honeydew-foraging ant, Lasuis niger, on the red wax scale insect, Ceroplastes rubens, was estimated at different manipulated densities in the field. The time that individual ants were present and the total attendance time (seconds x number of ants) of ants on scale-infested twigs significantly increased as the density of C. rubens increased, i.e. ant attendance was density dependent. To determine the effects of density dependence of ant attendance on parasitism of C. rubens by Anicetus beneficus, we measured parasitism rates in the field at different density levels of C. rubens both with ant attendance and with ants excluded. Parasitism rates were higher when ants were excluded, at each density level. Although the parasitism rate significantly deceased as scale density increased, whether or not ants attended, the difference in parasitism rate between density levels was strikingly less without ant attendance. Therefore, the density-dependent decrease of parasitism rate was more pronounced with ant attendance. Mortality not due to parasitism showed density dependence in both conditions and did not change when ants were excluded. These results indicate that attending ants reduce parasitism and that, as a consequence of the density dependence of ant attendance, the efficiency of reduction of parasitism by ants is enhanced at higher densities of C. rubens.  相似文献

We studied settling-site selection and the resulting survival of two sessile scale insects, Ceroplastes rubens and C. ceriferus, in the citrus tree, Citrus unshiu, in central Japan. C. rubens preferred 0-year-old twigs most as a settling-site; the density of nymphs settling on 0-year-old twigs was significantly higher than those on ≥1-year-old twigs, and few nymphs settled on ≥3-year-old twigs. The mean survival rates from settling until reproduction in the next year were significantly higher on more preferred twigs than on less preferred ones. In C. ceriferus, nymphs significantly preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs to 0- and ≥3-year-old ones, and the mean survival rates on the more preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs were significantly higher than those on less preferred ≥3-year-old twigs. However, the survival rate on less preferred 0-year-old twigs was slightly higher than those on 1- and 2-year-old ones. Thus, in both species of scale, it was the preferred twigs which were more profitable sites for survival after settling, except for less preferred 0-year-old twigs for C. ceriferus. In both scale species, most mortality was due to growth cessation, which is believed to be related to the twig quality as a food source. Predators and parasitoids were minor mortality factors. Both species showed constant survival rates until the density of settled nymphs exceeded double the “upper-limit” density, whereupon they decreased drastically. Nymphs of C. rubens settling on twigs of high scale density showed a spacing-out distribution, those of C. ceriferus did not. In C. rubens, an increase in preference for originally less profitable twigs at the later stage of the settling season was observed, but not in C. ceriferus. Accordingly, individuals of C. rubens showed a stronger tendency to avoid conspecifics than did C. ceriferus. Although nymphs of the two scales clearly preferred more profitable sites, their settling-site selection did not agree with the predictions from the ideal free distribution theory (Fretwell and Lucas, 1970). The discrepancies were (1) frequent settling on less profitable sites at the early stage of the settling season, (2) insufficient utilization of the most profitable twigs, and (3) virtually 100% mortality on overcrowded twigs under conditions where unoccupied profitable twigs still remained. These discrepancies are thought due to the limited dispersal time of nymphs.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of algal food density (1.5 × 106, 3.0 × 106 and 4.5 × 106 cells ml−1 of Chlorella) and temperature (22° and 28 °C) on competition among the rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus havanaensis, Brachionus patulus and Brachionus rubens, based on population growth experiments for 24 days. The growth experiments were conducted seperately for each individual rotifer species (i.e., controls), and in mixtures of all four species in equal initial proportions (i.e., under competition). The population growth of B. calyciflorus, B. havanaensis, B. patulus and B. rubens grown separately at two temperatures and at three algal food densities showed typical patterns of lag, exponential and retardation phases in the controls. This pattern differed considerably under competition. In general, we observed that in all of the test species, the highest growth rates were observed at higher food levels and in the absence of congenerics. At 22 °C, under the lowest food level, the differences in the population abundances of B. havanaensis, B. patulus and B. rubens grown alone and in the presence of competition were large. However, these differences reduced as food density was increased from 0.5 × 106 to 4.5 × 106 cells ml−1. At 28 °C and at the lowest food level, all of the other rotifer species eliminated B. havanaensis in mixed cultures. Each brachionid species had a higher rate when grown alone than when cultured with other species. The highest r (mean ± standard error: 0.54 ± 0.01 day−1) was recorded for B. havanaensis at 28 °C under 4.5 × 106 cells ml−1 of algal food density. At 28 °C at low algal food density, the presence of competitors resulted in negative population growth rates for three of the four rotifer species tested.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Brachionus rubens has a propensity for an epizoic mode of life, and in nature is often found attached to cladocerans. In this way the rotifer avoids to a certain extent the adverse effects of interference competition with cladocerans. We test the hypothesis that the epizoic habit of B. rubens acts also as a deterrent against invertebrate predation. Using Asplanchna intermedia as predator, we followed the population growth patterns of B. rubens alone and in the presence of the host species Daphnia carinata and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi. In the absence of cladocerans, the prey was eliminated within three days, followed by extinction of the predator due to starvation. With D. carinata in the medium, the prey-predator system persisted much longer, with B. rubens reaching high population densities. With the smaller-sized C. rigaudi, allowing a significantly smaller fraction of B. rubens population to be epizoic, the system persisted longer than in the controls, but both the prey and predator eventually became extinct. We conclude that the epizoic habit of B. rubens, by acting as a prey refugium, helps a portion of the population to escape from predation, and facilitates its coexistence with Asplanchna intermedia.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, we examined the effect of haloclines and determined whether the presence of food patches overrides this effect on larval vertical distribution of the sea star Asterias rubens, the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and the mussel Mytilus edulis. We experimentally constructed haloclines in which the salinity of the bottom water layer was 35 and that of the top layer was 21, 24, 27, and 30 (21/35, 24/35, 27/35, and 30/35) for A. rubens and S. droebachiensis, and 24, 27, 30 and 32 (24/35, 27/35, 30/35, and 32/35) for M. edulis. For each species and stage, additional halocline treatments (A. rubens: 24/32 and 27/32; 4-arm S. droebachiensis: 21/29 and 24/32; 6-arm S. droebachiensis: 24/29 and 24/32; M. edulis: 27/32 and 30/32) were used to determine whether the larval response to inhibitory salinity gradients was due to the absolute salinity of the top layer or the relative salinity difference between the two layers. Also, we measured the density of A. rubens and M. edulis to determine whether the specific gravity of larvae can explain the observed vertical distributions. Larvae aggregated at and below the halocline and these aggregations were more pronounced with increasing strength of the vertical salinity gradient. Threshold salinities in the top layer which inhibited ~ 100% of the larvae from crossing the halocline were 24 for A. rubens and M. edulis, and 21 for S. droebachiensis. These distributional patterns were not the result of larval density, which was greater than all treatment water densities for M. edulis and S. droebachiensis and lower for A. rubens. The effect of the presence of a food patch at inhibitory haloclines (A. rubens: 24/35 and 27/35; 4-arm S. droebachiensis: 21/34 and 24/34; M. edulis: 27/35) was determined by using three algal densities: 0, 5000 or 10 000 cells ml- 1Thalassiosira pseudonana in either the top or the bottom water layer. For both A. rubens and M. edulis, the number of larvae at the halocline increased in the presence of a food patch, but this effect did not depend on algal density in the patch. For 4-arm S. droebachiensis, there was no effect of the presence of a food patch on larval vertical distribution. Our results suggest that low salinity may act as a barrier to vertical movement and that the presence of food patches above the halocline may strengthen the larval aggregation response to inhibitory haloclines.  相似文献

 Changes in physiological parameters related to photosynthesis were studied in five macroalgal species from Spitsbergen (Monostroma arcticum, Laminaria solidungula, Alaria esculenta, Palmaria palmata, Phycodrys rubens) during a 72-h exposure to UV radiation. Maximal quantum yield of photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and maximal electron transport rate (ETRmax) were measured with a pulse-amplitude-modulated fluorometer; the activity of the Calvin cycle enzymes ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH) were estimated using a photometric test. Proteins of crude extracts were separated by SDS gel electrophoresis and changes in cellular concentrations of Rubisco were determined. Moreover, the concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl a), and protein content, were measured photometrically. In all species, Chl a content, maximal quantum yield as well as ETRmax decreased during the UV treatment. Changes in ETRmax were related to the changes in the overall activity of Rubisco. Analysis of SDS gels showed that in P. rubens, L. solidungula, M. arcticum and A. esculenta decreasing Rubisco activity partly resulted from a degradation of the enzyme. However, in A. esculenta, the formation of a high-molecular-weight polypeptide was observed. In all species, the activity of Rubisco was more strongly impaired than that of G3PDH. Exposure to UV resulted in loss of total protein only in the deepwater species L. solidungula and P. rubens. Penicillium oxalicum strain 212 (PO212) is an effective biocontrol agent (BCA) against a large number of economically important fungal plant pathogens. For successful registration as a BCA in Europe, PO212 must be accurately identified. In this report, we describe the use of classical genetic and molecular markers to characterize and identify PO212 in order to understand its ecological role in the environment or host. We successfully generated pyrimidine (pyr‐) auxotrophic mutants. In addition we also designed specific oligonucleotides for the pyrF gene at their untranslated regions for rapid and reliable identification and classification of strains of P. oxalicum and P. rubens, formerly P. chrysogenum. Using these DNA‐based technologies, we found that PO212 is a strain of P. rubens, and is not a strain of P. oxalicum. This work presents PO212 as the unique P. rubens strain to be described as a BCA and the information contained here serves for its registration and commercialization in Europe.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine whether thetwo cyclopoid copepods. Cyclops vicious and Mesocyclops leuckaru.exploit the same food resources. The food requirements of juvenilesof the two cyclopoid copepods were investigated. Moreover, theimportance of algae for the predaceous adults was studied. Naupliiof both M leuckaru and C.vicinus successfully developed intocopepodites when fed the motile algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.Chlamydomonas sphaeroides and Cryptomonas sp. Threshold foodconcentrations for naupliar development varied between offeredalgae and between the two cyclopoid species. The food thresholdfor successful naupliar development, when reared on C.reinhardui,was lower for M.leuckarti (0.3 mg C 1–1) than for C.vicinus(0.5 mg C l–1) whereas a similar food threshold was foundusing Cryptornonas sp (0.3 mg C –1) and C.sphaeroides(<0.2 mg C 1–1), Naupliar development time was inverselyrelated to food concentration. Food required for copepoditedevelopment differed for the two cyclopoid species. Cyclopsvicinus was able to develop to the adult stage on a pure dietof any one of the three algal species. whereas M.leuckarti requireda prey supply of the rotifer Brachionus rubens. Food composition.i.e. algal species, algal concentration and rotifer abundance,influenced copepodite survivorship of both cyclopoids and wasalways higher in the presence of B.rubens. Under similar foodconditions, mortality was higher for M.leuckarti than for Cvicinus. Mesocyclops leuckaru females were very dependent onanimal food. The predation rate of M.leuckaru was not lowerin the presence of algae. Egg production of M.leuckarti waslow on a pure algal diet and significantly higher when B rubenswas present. The results were used to discuss the life cyclestrategy and the possibility of exploitative competition ofthe two cyclopoid copepods.  相似文献

Gravid females of Ormia ochracealocate their hosts by homing on their hosts' calling songs. At Gainesville, Florida, O. ochraceafemales were attracted in greatest numbers to broadcast sounds that simulated the calling song of Gryllus rubens.Other candidate hosts and the attractiveness of their songs relative to the simultaneous song of G. rubenswere G. fultoni(9%), G. integer(4%), G. firmus(3%), Orocharis luteolira(1%), Scapteriscus borellii(1%), and S. vicinus(0%). The response of female O. ochraceato simulated G. rubenssongs that have different pulse rates changes with temperature in parallel with temperature-induced changes in the pulse rate of natural songs. Speaker stations 16 m apart in an apparently uniform environment produced strikingly different fly counts (e.g., 852 and 2163). The song of G. rubensat 21 °C approximates a continuous sequence of 4.6-kHz pulses at a rate of 45 s –1 and with a duty cycle of 50%. When two of these parameters were held constant and the third systematically varied in steps of 0.4kHz, 10s –1,and 10–20%, maximum attraction occurred at 4.4 kHz, 45 s –1,and 20–80%. Omitting as many as half the pulses in a rubenssimulation (e.g., 1, 2, 4, or 16 pulses followed by an equivalent silence, and repeat) did not significantly reduce the counts of O. ochracea,proving that chirping (producing pulses in brief groups) is no safeguard from call-seeking O. ochracea.Phase shifting of pulses in successive chirps sometimes decreased fly counts. When songs were first broadcast, flies came within seconds. Flies that landed at sound often stayed for minutes, even when the sound was turned off.  相似文献

The invasive grasses Bromus rubens and Bromus tectorum are responsible for widespread damage to semiarid biomes of western North America. Bromus. tectorum dominates higher and more northern landscapes than its sister species B. rubens, which is a severe invader in the Mojave desert region of the American Southwest. To assess climate thresholds controlling their distinct geographic ranges, we evaluated the winter cold tolerance of B. tectorum and B. rubens. Freezing tolerance thresholds were determined using electrolyte leakage and whole‐plant mortality. The responses of the two species to winter cold and artificial freezing treatments were similar in 2007–2008 and 2009–2010. When grown at minimum temperatures of 10 °C, plants of both species had cold tolerance thresholds near ?10 °C, while plants acclimated to a daily minimum of ?10 to ?30 °C survived temperatures down to ?31 °C. In the winter of 2010–2011, a sudden severe cold event on December 9, 2010 killed all B. rubens populations, while B. tectorum was not harmed; all tested plants were 7–8 weeks old. Controlled acclimation experiments demonstrated that 8‐week‐old plants of B. rubens had a slower acclimation rate to subzero temperatures than B. tectorum and could not survive a rapid temperature drop from 1 to ?14 °C. Four‐month‐old B. rubens populations were as cold tolerant as B. tectorum. Our results show that severe and sudden freeze events in late autumn can kill young plants of B. rubens but not B. tectorum. Such events could exclude B. rubens from the relatively cold, Intermountain steppe biome of western North America where B. tectorum predominates.  相似文献

The host taxon preference of Pontania proxima (Serville 1823) (Tenthredinidae, Hymenoptera) was investigated by observing densities of galls on previously genotypically and phenotypically characterized clones representing three taxa of a hybrid complex, i.e., Salix alba, Salix × rubens, and Salix fragilis. Gall densities among these three taxa were observed by using two experimental designs: (1) an indoor experiment in a greenhouse flight cage, and (2) an outdoor experiment on a plantation of cuttings. Subsequently, observed gall densities were related with selected, characteristic phenotypical properties of the host plants. In the indoor experiment, S. fragilis was clearly preferred by P. proxima, while in the outdoor experiment, S. × rubens revealed the highest gall densities. The factor “foliation start” was excluded in the indoor experiment, but best explained the preference of S. × rubens in the outdoor experiment. The results of a linear regression model affirmed on the one hand that morphological properties should be expected as relevant signals during the host plant selection process of P. proxima. On the other hand, it was shown that other phenotypical factors such as foliation start in spring contribute to an interference of factors being relevant for host plant selectivity. The earlier foliation start of the morphological intermediate S. × rubens in the outdoor experiment shifts resource availability towards that taxon at an early oviposition phase of P. proxima and therefore entails a different gall distribution pattern with a preference for the hybrid under natural conditions.  相似文献

Manganese, Mn, is a naturally abundant metal in marine sediments. During hypoxic conditions the metal converts into a bioavailable state and can reach levels that have been shown immunotoxic to the crustacean Nephrops norvegicus. For this species it has previously been shown that exposure to 15 mg L−1 of Mn decreased the number of circulating haemocytes while it for the echinoderm Asterias rubens increased the number of coelomocytes. Here, we compared if five days of exposure to the same concentration of Mn affects the bactericidal capacity of these two species and the mollusc Mytilus edulis when inoculated with the bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Viable counts of the bacteria were investigated at a time-course post-injection in the blood and the digestive glands of Mn-exposed and un-exposed (controls) animals. Accumulation of Mn was also analyzed in these tissues. When exposed to Mn the haemocyte numbers were significantly reduced in M. edulis and it was shown that the bactericidal capacity was impaired in the mussels as well as in N. norvegicus. This was most obvious in the digestive glands. These two species also showed the highest accumulation of the metal. In A. rubens the bactericidal capacity was not affected and the metal concentration was similar to the exposure concentration. After a recovery period of three days the concentration of Mn was significantly reduced in all three species. However, in M. edulis and N. norvegicus it was still double that of A. rubens which could explain the remaining bactericidal suppression observed in N. norvegicus. This study pointed out that exposure to such Mn-levels that are realistic to find in nature could have effects on the whole organism level, in terms of susceptibility to infections. The effect seemed associated to the accumulated concentration of Mn which differed on species level.  相似文献

Of the three Brachionus species used in aquaculture, Brachionus rubens, B. calycilorus and B. plicatilis, the latter is most widely used in raising marine fish and shrimp larvae due to its tolerance to the marine environment. In freshwater aquaculture the use of B. rubens and B. calycilorus is limited, probably because inert food products are readily available as feed for freshwater larvae.The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is used in large numbers as the first food organism in intensive cultures of marine fish and shrimp larvae. An adequate supply of these rotifers relies on mass cultures. The reproductive rate of rotifers in these cultures depends on food quality and quantity, salinity, temperature and pH of the medium. Removal of waste products from culture tanks leads to higher and more efficient production of rotifers over extended periods of time. Rotifers have to be enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for proper development and survival of marine fish and shrimp larvae.The future use of preserved rotifers and their resting eggs may help to overcome unforeseen failures of live cultures and may lead to more efficient use of these organisms in raising freshwater and marine fish and shrimp larvae.  相似文献

The volatile components emitted from two scale insects, Ceroplastes japonicus and Ceroplastes rubens, were identified using GC–MS analysis. The major volatile components of the solvent extract from C. japonicus were α-humulene (35.8%) and δ-cadinene (17.0%), while those of C. rubens were β-selinene (10.3%) and β-elemene (5.1%). In GC/olfactometry, linalool, butyric acid, 3-methylbutyric acid, 2-methylbutyric acid, and vanillin were identified as the odor-active components of the extract from C. japonicus, in addition to trace amounts of trans-4,5-epoxy-(2E)-decenal, 4-methyl-(3E)-hexenoic acid, and phenylacetic acid. With regard to C. rubens, trans-4,5-epoxy-(2E)-decenal, 3-methylbutyric acid, and phenylacetic acid were identified as the odor-active components. An extracellular α-amylase produced by a cassava-fermenting strain ofMicrococcus luteus was purified 26-fold by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. The molar mass was estimated to be approximately 56 kDa. The optimum temperature of the enzyme was 30°C, optimum pH 6.0 and optimum substrate concentration was 0.6% (W/V). Treatment of the enzyme at 70°C for 10 min resulted in 70% loss of activity. The activation energy was determined to be 34.8 kJ/mol. The activity of the enzyme was enhanced by Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Na+ and inhibited by EDTA, KCN and citric acid. The enzyme may find some application in local food processing.  相似文献
