Nested nets of three different mesh apertures were used to study mesh-size effects on drift collected in a small mountain stream. The innermost, middle, and outermost nets had, respectively, 425 µm, 209 µm and 106 µm openings, a design that reduced clogging while partitioning collections into three size groups. The open area of mesh in each net, from largest to smallest mesh opening, was 3.7, 5.7 and 8.0 times the area of the net mouth. Volumes of filtered water were determined with a flowmeter. The results are expressed as (1) drift retained by each net, (2) drift that would have been collected by a single net of given mesh size, and (3) the percentage of total drift (the sum of the catches from all three nets) that passed through the 425 µm and 209 µm nets. During a two day period in August 1986, Chironomidae larvae were dominant numerically in all 209 µm and 106 µm samples and midday 425 µm samples. Large drifters (Ephemerellidae) occurred only in 425 µm or 209 µm nets, but the general pattern was an increase in abundance and number of taxa with decreasing mesh size. Relatively more individuals occurred in the larger mesh nets at night than during the day. The two larger mesh sizes retained 70% of the total sediment/detritus in the drift collections, and this decreased the rate of clogging of the 106 µm net. If an objective of a sampling program is to compare drift density or drift rate between areas or sampling dates, the same mesh size should be used for all sample collection and processing. The mesh aperture used for drift collection should retain all species and life stages of significance in a study. The nested net design enables an investigator to test the adequacy of drift samples.  相似文献

1. Invertebrate drift is commonly investigated in streams, with the majority of studies focussed on temporal (typically diel) variation. In comparison, few studies have investigated spatial variation in drift and there is little consensus among them. We tested the hypothesis that spatial variation in invertebrate drift is as important as temporal variation. 2. The density of drifting invertebrates in a chalk stream was sampled using an array of nets arranged to determine vertical, lateral and longitudinal variation. Samples were collected at dawn, during the day, at dusk and by night, on four separate monthly occasions. Insecta and Crustacea were analysed separately to identify the effect of differing life history strategies. The density of drifting debris was also recorded, to act as a null model. 3. Time of day and vertical position together explained the majority of the variance in invertebrate drift (79% for Insecta and 97% for Crustacea), with drift densities higher at dusk and night, and nearer the stream bed. Independently, time of day (38%, Insecta; 52%, Crustacea) and vertical position (41%, Insecta; 45%, Crustacea) explained a similar amount of the observed variance. Month explained some of the variance in insect drift (9%) but none for Crustacea. 4. Variation in the density of drifting debris showed little in common with invertebrate drift. There was little variation associated with time of day and only 27% of the observed variation in debris could be explained by the factors investigated here, with month explaining the largest proportion (20%). We suggest the difference in drifting debris and invertebrates provides further evidence for a strong behavioural component in invertebrate drift. 5. Spatial variation in invertebrate drift can be of the same order of magnitude as the much‐described diel temporal variation. The extent of this spatial variation poses problems when attempting to quantify invertebrate drift and we recommend that spatial replication should be incorporated into drift studies.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A new method is described for sampling the drift in large rivers continuously and automatically, using equipment based on the marine, continuous plankton sampler of Hardy (1936).
2. Between April and November 1989, about 790 h were sampled continuously, equivalent to a water volume of 2937m3 and the total catch was 527 drifting macroinvertebrates, in forty-nine taxa. Twenty-five of these taxa are recorded in the drift for the first time and twenty-eight of the drifting taxa were present in benthos samples from the Danube.
3. Total drift density varied between 12 and 31 animals per 100m3 of water sampled throughout the year, with a maximum of 31 animals in May, The composition of major faunal groups showed a significant seasonal pattern, with Oligochaeta and Diptera predominant in spring, Crustacea and Insecta in summer and only Crustacea in autumn. The overall density of the macrozoobenthos from October 1986 to December 1987 was about 19360 animals m−2 and the proportion of total benthos animals, drifting at any instant in time, ranged from 0.0026 to 0.0064%.
4. The relationship between drift density day−1 and mean daily discharge was described by a power-function. Total mean drift rate of macroinvertebrates in the Danube was estimated to be 13 600 000 animals per 24 h and the mean drift distance was estimated to vary between about 4 and 31 m, dependent on the animal group and the water velocity.
5. No obvious consistent diel pattern could be established from the continuous samples, and no marked diel rhythm could be detected for Oligochaeta, Diptera larvae and Crustacea.  相似文献

1. Studies of dispersal of macroinvertebrates in streams and rivers tend to be focused on drift, whilst benthic movements are usually considered to be less important.
2. Field-enclosure experiments with the mayfly Baetis rhodani indicate that net dispersal in this species is simply a proportional loss of individuals from the benthos.
3. Neither net upstream or downstream movements exhibited evidence of density-dependence in the form of curvilinear relationships between initial and final densities.
4. The net number of animals moving upstream did not differ significantly from the net number moving downstream.

1. The objective was to determine the major factors affecting the downstream dispersal (drift) of freshwater shrimps, Gammarus pulex. Sample replication and frequency are major problems in the quantification of drift. For the first time, these problems were avoided by sampling the whole stream continuously so that all the shrimps drifting downstream at the sampling point were caught in a net emptied at dusk and dawn in 1966, and every 3 days in 1967. 2. There was no consistent seasonal pattern in drift rates, but a high proportion of annual drift was taken in only a few samples. There was a nocturnal diel pattern of drift with peaks soon after dusk and just before dawn. A power function described the significant (P < 0.001) relationship between drift and flow, and was used to neutralise the dominant effects of flow by standardising total drift over 24 h, nocturnal drift and diurnal drift (drift per 50 m3). These were all significantly (P < 0.001) related to benthos density, but not to date, temperature, or length of the night or day. 3. The relationship between drift values and the independent variables, flow and benthos density, was well described (P < 0.001) by a multiple‐regression model. Adding temperature, date, and/or the length of the night or day did not improve model fit. Variations in flow and benthos density explained 94% of the variation in total drift over 24 h, 97% of the variation in nocturnal drift, but only 44% of the variation in diurnal drift. A power function described (P < 0.001) the relationship between total drift and the volume of water sampled over 3‐day periods in 1967. Flow explained 95% of this drift variation; it was unnecessary to add another variable such as benthos density. 4. The significance of this study is that it avoided the problems associated with the quantification of drift samples. Therefore, the conclusions are more robust than those of many previous studies. A high proportion of the annual drift losses would have been undetected by intermittent sampling. Temperature, season, night or day length had no significant effect on drift densities, and the relationship between drift and benthos densities was proportional, not density dependent. The nocturnal increase in drift could not be interpreted as an antipredator behaviour. The dominance of flow and benthos density was apparent but the quantitative relationships posed further questions, especially those related to drift distances at different velocities.  相似文献

1. Invertebrate drift was studied in a glacially fed river and a non-glacial tributary in western Norway. Samples were taken during two consecutive 24-h periods in May, July and October 1997. The 3 months are characterized by snowmelt, ice melt and rainfall runoff, respectively. The main glacial river has colder, more turbid water, especially during the period of maximum ice melt during summer.
2. Chironomidae, especially the genus Diamesa , dominated the drift in the main river in May and October, constituting 97 and 99% of total numbers, respectively. Simuliidae, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera were the other main components.
3. A comparison of drift and benthos data revealed that the tributary was of little significance for colonization of the main glacial river. Only some additional species in very low numbers were recorded downstream of the confluence.
4. During July significant differences in diel drift pattern of Chironomidae and Simuliidae existed between the glacial and non-glacial reaches. There was a mid-day peak independent of discharge in the glacial river, but this peak was not noted in the tributary. Species of the genus Diamesa appear to be adapted for daytime drift, possibly evolved through the absence of predators and competitors that are typical of rhithral systems where nocturnal drift is more usual.  相似文献

Drift nets have been used to document reproductive success of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens. Current net designs and methods for collecting drifting larvae only sample a portion of the water column, which require assumptions of either a benthic or uniform distribution of larvae when estimating abundance or production. The objective of this study was to describe the vertical distribution of larval lake sturgeon in the Peshtigo River, Wisconsin, and to determine if drift was benthic or uniform in distribution. A net was designed to assess the vertical distribution of drifting larvae in 0.2-m increments at depths up to 1.4 m; however, during this sampling, maximum depth did not exceed 0.78 m. The distribution of larval lake sturgeon was neither benthic nor uniform. Only 5% of larvae were captured in the lowest 0.2-m increment, followed by 18% from 0.2 to 0.4 m, 41% from 0.4 to 0.6 m, and 36% from 0.6 m to the surface. Although results will likely differ among years, systems, and the precise location of sampling, our study illustrates the importance of and provides a technique for testing assumptions of the vertical distribution of larval lake sturgeon drift.  相似文献

200 µm and 50 µm mesh aperture nets were compared with respect to the sampling of the drift of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae.200 µm mesh drift nets were found to be unsatisfactory for the sampling of chironomid larval drift; such nets seriously underestimated drift density of larvae and distorted the sub-family and instar composition of samples.200 µm mesh drift nets captured larval drift in densities of 1–24 m–3, while pumped samples, filtered through 50 µm mesh aerial nets, indicated densities of 10–1600 m–3. Drift nets also underestimated ephemeropteran drift density.The use of pumps, with 50 µm or smaller mesh aperture aerial nets, is recommended for quantitative and qualitative sampling of chironomid drift, and possibly that of other invertebrates.  相似文献

1. The objectives were (i) to determine experimentally and to model the relationship between mean water velocity and both the mean distance travelled, and the mean time spent, in the drift by freshwater shrimps, Gammarus pulex; (ii) to develop a drift distance–water velocity model from the experimental study, and validate it with field data; (iii) to examine the relationship between drift rate, water velocity and benthic density with the latter expressed as a mean value for the whole stream and a mean value corrected for the distance travelled in the drift. 2. In field experiments at 10 water velocities (0.032–0.962 m s?1), the significant relationship between the mean drift distance and mean water velocity was described both by a power function (power, 0.96) and a linear relationship. The mean drift time was fairly constant at 8.3 s (95% CL ± 0.4). A simple model estimated the drift distance and time spent in the drift by different percentages of the drifting invertebrates. This model predicted correctly the positive relationship between drift rate and water velocity for field data over a year. 3. The relationship between drift rate per hour and the independent variables, water velocity and benthic density, was well described by a multiple‐regression model. Adding temperature and date did not improve model fit. Variations in water velocity and benthic density explained 96% of the variation in nocturnal drift rate (65% to velocity, 31% to benthic density), but only 40% of the variation in diurnal drift rate (29% to velocity, 11% to benthic density). Correcting benthic density for the drift distances did not improve model fit. 4. The significance of this study is that it developed models to predict drift distances and time, values being similar to those obtained in another, larger stream. It also illustrated the importance of spatial scale in the interpretation of drift by showing that when drift distances were taken into account, the impact of drift on the population was higher (4–10% lost day?1) than when drift distances were ignored (usually < 3% lost day?1), especially at a local level.  相似文献

Larvae of Neureclipsis bimaculata (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) construct elaborate catchnets in lotic habitats to trap small drifting invertebrate prey. Three populations located at two oligotrophic and one eutrophic site were studied in southern Sweden. Measurements were made of larval weight, net size, seston quality and quantity, and stream velocity.
Neureclipsis larvae alter their net dimensions in response to both velocity and seston concentration. This was determined by comparing net structure and seston at the three locations. Larvae from the eutrophic, high quality seston site attain a significantly (P < 0.001) heavier instar V dry weight, spin a smaller catchnet, filter a volume of water dependent on body size, and slightly alter their catchnet dimensions with velocity. Larvae from the two oligothrophic sites are significantly smaller than those from the eutrophic site, spin a larger net at comparable velocities, filter a larger volume of water at comparable weights, and alter net dimensions with velocity.
Estimates of silk production indicate that the net cost is minimized by spinning a very fine silken strand and by adding silk over a period of time. The cost while large is offset by a large capture rate of prey.
The structure of Neureclipsis nets appears to be the result of a trade-off between maximizing food capture and minimizing hydraulic stress on the net.  相似文献

The diel drift patterns of Chironomidae larvae were investigated in a seventh order section of the Warta River (Central Poland) over two diel cycles during May 1989. Three nets (mesh size 400 m) were installed in a cross section of the Warta River.The estimated drift density was low, but was comparable to that calculated for other large rivers. Spatio-temporal fluctuations in abundance and composition of macroinvertebrate drift, including Chironomidae, were observed with the highest density of drifting macrobenthos recorded near the depositional bank of this river. The ratio benthosdrift indicated differing propensities for of the older instars of a given chironomid taxon to drift. Orthocladiinae larvae were the most abundant subfamily of Chironomidae in drift but not in benthos, reaching up to 73% of the total drifting chironomid larvae. More taxa but fewer individuals (about 20% of the chironomid larvae collected) belonged to the tribe Chironomini, the dominant group in benthos.A major part of chironomid drift collection may represent behavioural drift because the net mesh size used in the Warta River was insufficient to catch the earliest instars (distributional drift). Both at the family and subfamily level chironomid larvae exhibited a distinct nocturnal drift periodicity. Nocturnal periodicity was documented for the dominant species, but due to the low density of many chironomid species, it was impossible to determine their diel drift pattern. 1.  Previous work in streams, where many organisms disperse downstream by drifting in the water column, has suggested dispersal distances could be related to the overall proportion of the stream within dead water zones (DWZ), places such as backwaters, pools or behind large obstacles, where the water is out of the main flow and is stored temporarily. However, dispersal distances might also be influenced by the spatial organization of DWZ within a reach; this would require us to distinguish between reaches containing many small DWZ compared with those having a few large ones in order to understand fully differences in dispersal patterns among reaches differing in this regard.
2.  We constructed a spatial model of flow in stream reaches, in which we varied the density and size distribution of DWZ distributed through the reach. We defined flow conditions under which stream organisms, modelled as passive particles, would settle or continue to drift downstream. We then examined the horizontal dispersal profiles of such particles through reaches differing in arrays of DWZ.
3.  Our results support those of previous studies, but suggest that the spatial arrangement of DWZ may be just as important as the overall proportion of DWZ within a reach. On a more general note, the importance of patch configuration observed in this study reflects the growing view that a thorough understanding of population and ecosystem processes will require the explicit consideration of spatial pattern in the environment.  相似文献

1. The River Durance, the last alpine tributary of the River Rhône, is a large, braided alluvial hydrosystem. Following large-scale regulation, flow downstream of the Serre-Ponçon dam has been maintained at 1/40th of previous annual mean discharge. To assess the effects of historical disturbances, fish assemblages and habitat use were analysed during five summers in a representative reach of the middle Durance.
2. Habitat availability and use were assessed with a multi-scale approach including the variables water depth, current velocity, roughness height of substratum, amount of woody debris and lateral/longitudinal location. Eighteen fish species were sampled by electrofishing in 289 habitat sample units.
3. Partial least square (PLS) regression showed that taxa were mainly distributed according to relationships between their total length and water depth/velocity variables. Fish assemblage composition was also related to roughness height as well as distance from the bank or to the nearest large woody debris. However, PLS regression revealed no significant differences in habitat selection between two periods of varying hydromorphological stability.
4. Fish distribution patterns and density were related to proximity to the bank and cover, indicating that local scale variables need to be considered in conservation and restoration programmes.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Many animals forage for non-food objects, such as nesting materials. In many organisms, the depots of such objects can be expansive, and are not intuitively adaptive. This study empirically explores varying theories for why these depots exist in the Florida harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex badius .
2. The Florida harvester ant, like its western congeners, collects and deposits large quantities of non-food objects around its nest entrance. The vast majority of objects sampled from colonies in this study population were charcoal pieces whereas most western species collect pebbles.
3. Objects in these depots can number in the millions, suggesting a large cost to this behaviour and strengthening an adaptationist argument.
4. Many hypotheses have been suggested for these depots, including temperature and water modification and territoriality. No evidence was found to support the results of a previous study which found that charcoal depots deter other ant species.
5. The depots do not appear to affect soil hydrology, but do slightly increase soil temperature at the very top of the nest. In an attempt to estimate the seasonal fitness of colonies with and without charcoal depots, no statistical difference was detected in sexual investment between treatment groups.
6. These results suggest that the charcoal depots may be selectively advantageous through temperature modification, but may serve alternate functions that are species and habitat specific.  相似文献

The movement of immature insects up down and across Salem Creek, Ontario, was measured with traps and nets at two week intervals from January to December 1977. Drift of most taxa was more strongly correlated with water velocity from August to December than it was over the whole year. That of Baetis, however, was not correlated with water velocity and it was significantly greater at the side of the stream than at the centre from May to July. Upstream movement, as measured in three different ways, was small compared with drift, being only 2.1, 7.3 and 15.2 percent respectively.Upstream and across stream movements were not consistently different from one another, changes in their intensity apparently merely representing changes in numbers and behaviour of the animals. It is concluded therefore that upstream movement is only random movement.Colonization of empty sediment in trays on and above the substratum confirmed that most reoccupation of denuded areas is by drift. This supports the finding that drift is far geater than random wandering of the insects.  相似文献

1. In a series of laboratory experiments, we assessed the predatory nature of the native Irish amphipod, Gammarus duebeni celticus , and the introduced G. pulex , towards the mayfly nymph Baetis rhodani . We also investigated alterations in microhabitat use and drift behaviour of B . rhodani in the presence of Gammarus , and indirect predatory interactions with juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar .
2. In trials with single predators and prey, B. rhodani survival was significantly lower when Gammarus were free to interact with nymphs as than when Gammarus were isolated from them. The invader G. pulex reduced the survival of B. rhodani more rapidly than did the native G. d. celticus . Both Gammarus spp. were active predators.
3. In `patch' experiments, B. rhodani survival was significantly lower both when G. pulex and G. d. celticus were present, although the effect of the two Gammarus species did not differ. Again, active predation of nymphs by Gammarus was observed. Significantly more nymphs occurred on the top and sides of a tile, and per capita drifts were significantly higher, when Gammarus were present. Baetis rhodani per capita drift was also significantly higher in the presence of the introduced G. pulex than with the native G. d. celticus .
4.  Gammarus facilitated predation by salmon parr of B. rhodani by significantly increasing fish–nymph encounters on exposed gravel and in the drift. There were no differential effects of the two Gammarus spp. on fish – B . rhodani encounters or consumption.
5. We conclude that Gammarus as a predator can have lethal, nonlethal, direct and indirect effects in freshwaters. We stress the need for recognition of this predatory role when assigning Gammarus spp. to a `Functional Feeding Group'.  相似文献

Insect populations vary in the proportion of individuals exhibiting a particular ‘state’ (e.g., developmental stage, sex, egg load, or nutritional status). Because an insect's developmental state often determines both its size and its behavior, it is likely that this will also affect the probability of being sampled. We propose that a comprehensive approach to pest management must consider the interaction between the structure of a pest population (i.e., the relative number of individuals in each state) and any state‐dependent sampling bias. To illustrate the usefulness of this method we sampled populations of the western tarnished pest bug, Lygus hesperus Knight (Heteroptera: Miridae), in cotton fields. Our sampling technique utilized large cages to measure the absolute densities of each L. hesperus stage and adult sex within a population. This technique allowed us to document a wide range of absolute stage structures and sex ratios across 10 L. hesperus populations in California. Using a combination of cage samples and sweep net samples, we quantified the state‐dependent sampling bias by calculating the efficiency of sweep sampling as a function of L. hesperus developmental stage and sex. We found that the efficiency of sweep nets increased steadily with each successive developmental stage (i.e., nymphal instar) of L. hesperus. We also found that sweep nets are slightly more efficient in capturing male vs. female L. hesperus adults. Since other studies have documented that the stage and sex of L. hesperus can affect feeding impact on cotton flower buds, our results suggest that accurate predictions of Lygus damage will need to incorporate stage and sex‐dependent sampling biases.  相似文献

Aim:  The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Campylobacter species in a subset of intensive poultry flocks by examining samples collected in geographically disparate areas on the island of Ireland.
Methods and Results:  Faecal, water and environmental samples were collected from the interior of poultry houses on nine farms. Three cultural methods were used for Campylobacter isolation: direct plating, enrichment culture and a recovery method for emerging Campylobacter spp. Presumptive Campylobacter isolates were confirmed using biochemical tests and further identified to species level by multiplex PCR. All flocks sampled in this study were found to be contaminated with Campylobacter at the time of sampling. Structural and air samples taken from the interior of broiler houses were also found to be Campylobacter positive. All water samples were found to be Campylobacter negative. The Campycheck method was used for the isolation of emerging Campylobacter spp.
Conclusions:  Campylobacter spp. were recovered (as contaminants) from the poultry house interior, air and environmental samples in all intensive poultry flocks surveyed.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  This study highlights the need for improved biosecurity on selected poultry farms.  相似文献

In order to evaluate fyke nets as a tool for population assessment and mass removal of brown bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus populations, small, shallow ponds were sampled during late summer in 1999 and 2000. Catch efficiency, species and size selectivity of fyke nets were investigated with the mark‐recapture method. Two different strategies were applied: (1) on six occasions, the mark‐recapture method was applied to entire populations, and (2) in six other cases, sampling was done in two replicated enclosed areas (625 m2). When applied to entire populations, fyke nets were found to be size selective, and capture efficiency significantly increased with standard length. Conversely, no size selectivity of fyke nets was found in enclosed areas. Sampling in replicated enclosures yielded reproducible estimates of population density and biomass. The results suggest that double fyke nets, when combined with the mark‐recapture technique, are a very useful tool for the efficient and reliable assessment of brown bullhead populations. The results of the study also suggest that double fyke nets may potentially be a cost‐effective tool for the mass removal of non‐indigenous brown bullhead populations.  相似文献
