Summary A field population of Polistes metricus Say near St. Louis, Missouri was supplemented with dilute Apis mellifera honey and Trichoplusia ni caterpillars during the entire colony development period. Offspring were collected at two times to coincide with emergence of worker and reproductive broods. Food supplementation had no effect on nest size, the number of worker offspring, or the size of workers. Supplemented colonies did produce more females in August but female size was unaffected by supplementation. Supplementation had no effect on the number of males produced, but males were slightly larger on supplemented nests. Earlier studies showed that Russian honey bees support slow growth of varroa mite population. We studied whether or not comb type influenced varroa reproduction in both Russian and Italian honey bees, and whether Russian bees produced comb which inhibited varroa reproduction. The major differences found in this study concerned honey bee type. Overall, the Russian honey bees had lower (2.44 ± 0.18%) levels of varroa infestation than Italian honey bees (7.20 ± 0.60%). This decreased infestation resulted in part from a reduced number of viable female offspring per foundress in the Russian (0.85 ± 0.04 female) compared to the Italian (1.23 ± 0.04 females) honey bee colonies. In addition, there was an effect by the comb built by the Russian honey bee colonies that reduced varroa reproduction. When comparing combs having Russian or Italian colony origins, Russian honey bee colonies had more non-reproducing foundress mites and fewer viable female offspring in Russian honey bee comb. This difference did not occur in Italian colonies. The age of comb in this study had mixed effects. Older comb produced similar responses for six of the seven varroa infestation parameters measured. In colonies of Italian honey bees, the older comb (2001 dark) had fewer (1.13 ± 0.07 females) viable female offspring per foundress than were found in the 2002 new (1.21 ± 0.06 females) and 1980s new (1.36 ± 0.08 females) combs. This difference did not occur with Russian honey bee colonies where the number of viable female offspring was low in all three types of combs. This study suggests that honey bee type largely influences growth of varroa mite population in a colony.  相似文献

Using demography data for the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia fasciata collected at 10 survey stations over 5 years, the effects of foundress group size (FGS) on colony survival rate and production of progeny were examined. The distribution pattern for the frequency of nests established by different numbers of foundresses fit a 0‐truncated negative binomial distribution. The rate of nest failure up to the beginning of June decreased with FGS, and colony survival rate up to June and September increased with FGS. Although there were large variations among stations and years, the survival rate of colonies established by a single foundress (haplometrotic colonies) was significantly lower than that of colonies established by two or more foundresses (pleometrotic colonies). The number of new adults that emerged per colony up to the end of July increased with FGS, but there was no significant correlation between number of new adults per foundress and FGS. The number of potential foundresses produced per colony tended to increase with FGS, but there was no significant difference among the values produced per foundress for the three FGS categories. The percentage parasitism by an ichneumon parasitoid, Arthula formosana, tended to be higher in colonies established by a small number of foundresses. The relation between FGS and the productivity of the new foundresses was not statistically significant, suggesting that independent founding may be a better strategy for future subordinate foundresses. However, the long colony life span (mean 100 days, maximum 240 days) as compared with the shorter life span of foundresses (40 or 50 days) may be a good condition for the coexistence of many egg‐layers in a colony.  相似文献

A field study was conducted in which colonies of Toxoptera citricida (Kirkaldy) were initiated with different numbers of foundresses on ungrafted citrus trees var. ‘Carrizo’ within an existing citrus grove in central Florida. 2. The growth rate, longevity, and final size of T. citricida colonies were all positively correlated with number of foundresses. 3. Colonies initiated by many foundresses produced alatae earlier than those initiated by fewer foundresses. 4. Nymphal developmental time was reduced in colonies initiated by more foundresses but the mean number of grand‐progeny per foundress was lower when only surviving colonies were compared. 5. The longevity of foundresses was unaffected by their number but foundress fecundity and nymphal survival decreased as foundress number increased. 6. The most abundant natural enemies were Diptera: Syrphidae, primarily Pseudodorus clavatus (F.), and Chamaemiidae (Leucopis sp.), followed by Coleoptera: Coccinellidae, primarily Cycloneda sanguinea (L). 7. Colonies initiated with more foundresses attracted more oviposition by dipteran predators than did colonies initiated with fewer foundresses.  相似文献

In black cotton uplands in East Africa, four symbiotic acacia-ant species compete for possession of a single swollen thorn tree species, Acacia drepanolobium, and yet coexist at fine spatial scales. Three of the four ant species produce independent foundress queens that establish colonies claustrally within swollen thorns, most often on small saplings. We conducted surveys of such saplings at two sites in 2001 and 2004, and examined foundresses and incipient colonies within their swollen thorns to determine what factors influence their success. Competition among foundresses for nest initiation sites was intense, with an average of over one founding attempt per swollen thorn in all samples, and with living and dead queens significantly hyper-dispersed among available thorns. Combat with other foundresses was the most common cause of death among claustral queens, especially for Tetraponera penzigi. In interspecific battles for nest initiation sites, T. penzigi was dominant over Crematogaster nigriceps and C. mimosae, and C. nigriceps won over 80% of its contests with C. mimosae foundresses. For singleton foundresses, brood parasitism by the braconid wasp Trigastrotheca laikipiensis typically results in the death of the entire ant brood. Host queens defend parasite larvae, pupae and eclosed adults, apparently unable to distinguish the wasps from legitimate offspring. Rates of brood parasitism were as high as 15–20% for incipient colonies of both Crematogaster species, but were extremely low for T. nigriceps in all samples. Although T. penzigi and C. nigriceps foundresses are always solitary, approximately 18% of claustral C. mimosae colonies contain cooperating pleometrotic queens. For unparasitized, claustral C. mimosae colonies, brood production per queen did not differ between solitary and cooperating foundresses. Maternal serum leptin concentrations have been suggested as a key factor in programming growth patterns and protecting against adult metabolic disease in human offspring. However, the role of maternal leptin in the development of wild rodent offspring is not clear. We tested the hypothesis that maternal hyperleptinemia in lactating Brandt’s voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) can protect their offspring from the risks of high-fat-diet-induced-obesity and insulin resistance. Lactating voles were supplemented with murine leptin (0.64 μg g−1 day−1) or phosphate-buffered saline (control) on days10–17 of lactation (peak lactation). At 12 weeks of age, the female and male offspring of the two maternal groups were randomly assigned to two groups each and fed either a high-fat diet (41% of gross energy as fat) or a control diet (14% of gross energy as fat) until the age of 23 weeks. Body mass, food intake, glucose tolerance and resting metabolic rate were determined in the four offspring groups. After animals were sacrificed, organ masses and adipose tissue distribution, and serum leptin and insulin concentrations were measured. Offspring of leptin-treated mothers showed no significant differences in body mass, energy intake or energy expenditure, body composition, glucose tolerance or serum leptin and insulin concentrations from offspring of control mothers. The high-fat diet induced increases in body mass (by 23% in female and 17% in male offspring) and reduced glucose tolerance in both female and male offspring, indicative of the emergence of insulin resistance, even though digestible energy intake of the male offspring decreased on the high-fat diet. These results indicate that maternal hyperleptinemia during peak lactation in Brandt’s voles did not protect against diet-induced obesity or glucose intolerance in their offspring.  相似文献

The relation between the duration of ontogenesis of Polistes dominula males and the social structure of their colonies was studied in July–August 2012. Males developing in successful colonies with a foundress passed through the later-instar larval and pupal stages more quickly than those in orphaned colonies. Successful colonies more often produced males with weakly melanized mesopleura as compared with orphaned ones. Males from the two categories of colonies did not differ in the head and wing size. The influence of mechanical stress and nutrition during larval development and the specific signaling behavior of the foundresses on the male phenotypic diversity in P. dominula is discussed.  相似文献

  1. Deformed wing virus (DWV), notorious for its virulence in the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) when vectored by the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, is also widespread among wild bumble bee species, presumably through spillover from honey bees. Experimental studies on the virulence of DWV in Bombus spp. have provided equivocal results and have until now been confined to bumble bees under laboratory conditions.
  2. Here, we inoculated commercially reared Bombus terrestris workers with DWV-A through feeding or injection and introduced them into experimental colonies placed in the field, thus exposing them to the environment and associated stressors. We monitored the survival of inoculated worker bumble bees and quantified their viral load at 10 days post inoculation.
  3. Bombus terrestris workers injected with DWV-A supported high viral loads and exhibited significantly reduced median survival compared to controls. Bumble bees inoculated by feeding had low or zero detectable viral loads while their mortality did not differ from the control group.
  4. Our results demonstrate that, although DWV-A is pathogenic for commercial B. terrestris, the risks for individual fitness from spillover of DWV-A during foraging on shared flowers appear limited.
  5. The findings of this experiment also highlight the necessity to address the potential context-dependence of virulence when evaluating the impact of a pathogen in an alternative host.

  • 1 In a 16-month study in Bangalore, India, about 35% of the newly founded colonies of Ropalidia marginata were single foundress colonies and the remainder were multiple foundress colonies with two to twenty-two individuals.
  • 2 Larger colonies did not have a significantly higher per capita productivity, did not produce significantly heavier progeny and did not produce them significantly faster than smaller colonies did.
  • 3 Predation by the hornet Vespa tropica appeared to be independent of group size.
  • 4 Single foundress colonies failed more often but not often enough to make them have a lower average per capita productivity, compared to multiple foundress colonies.
  • 5 Some of the advantages of multiple foundress associations came from the greater predictability of their attaining the mean per capita productivity, the relatively lower rates of usurpation experienced by them compared to single foundress colonies, and the opportunities provided by queen turnovers for workers to become replacement queens and gain direct individual fitness.

Feral honey bee populations have been reported to be in decline due to the spread of Varroa destructor, an ectoparasitic mite that when left uncontrolled leads to virus build-up and colony death. While pests and diseases are known causes of large-scale managed honey bee colony losses, no studies to date have considered the wider pathogen burden in feral colonies, primarily due to the difficulty in locating and sampling colonies, which often nest in inaccessible locations such as church spires and tree tops. In addition, little is known about the provenance of feral colonies and whether they represent a reservoir of Varroa tolerant material that could be used in apiculture. Samples of forager bees were collected from paired feral and managed honey bee colonies and screened for the presence of ten honey bee pathogens and pests using qPCR. Prevalence and quantity was similar between the two groups for the majority of pathogens, however feral honey bees contained a significantly higher level of deformed wing virus than managed honey bee colonies. An assessment of the honey bee race was completed for each colony using three measures of wing venation. There were no apparent differences in wing morphometry between feral and managed colonies, suggesting feral colonies could simply be escapees from the managed population. Interestingly, managed honey bee colonies not treated for Varroa showed similar, potentially lethal levels of deformed wing virus to that of feral colonies. The potential for such findings to explain the large fall in the feral population and the wider context of the importance of feral colonies as potential pathogen reservoirs is discussed.  相似文献

The production of male sexual offspring by social insect colonies is often strongly seasonal or resource-dependent. In stingless bees, males are produced in smaller numbers under conditions of low colony food reserves; whether such males are negatively affected in traits related to reproductive success is not known. We compared body size, sperm production and sexual maturity in Melipona beecheii males reared with experimentally supplemented or reduced pollen reserves, but with otherwise equal numbers of workers and equal quantities of honey reserves. We also studied the same traits in males collected from non-manipulated colonies with pollen reserves intermediate between the supplemented or reduced groups but with more workers and honey reserves. Males reared under experimentally reduced pollen reserves had significantly smaller bodies and lower sperm counts compared to those reared in colonies with experimentally supplemented pollen reserves. There was also a significantly positive relationship between the number of sperm and body size in males across all colony treatments. The maximum number of sperm in seminal vesicles was recorded 2 days later in males from colonies with reduced pollen compared to males from colonies with supplementary pollen. Males from non-manipulated colonies were intermediate in size, sperm count and speed of maturation. Our study documents for the first time the existence of large size variation in males of stingless bees that is related with the amount of pollen reserves in their natal colony. We conclude that a colony’s pollen reserves have a major impact on male body size, sperm production and speed of sexual maturity in this stingless bee, which may be the case in other social insects. Stingless bees are a good model system to study the balance between colony-level selection and individual-level selection on male sexually selected traits such as body size.  相似文献

Fig‐pollinating wasps (Agaonidae) only reproduce within fig tree inflorescences (figs). Agaonid offspring sex ratios are usually female‐biased and often concur with local mate competition theory (LMC). LMC predicts less female‐bias when several foundresses reproduce in a fig due to reduced relatedness among intra‐sexually competing male offspring. Clutch size, the offspring produced by each foundress, is a strong predictor of agaonid sex ratios and correlates negatively with foundress number. However, clutch size variation can result from several processes including egg load (eggs within a foundress), competition among foundresses and oviposition site limitation, each of which can be used as a sex allocation cue. We introduced into individual Ficus racemosa figs single Ceratosolen fusciceps foundresses and allowed each to oviposit from zero to five hours thus variably reducing their eggs‐loads and then introduced each wasp individually into a second fig. Offspring sex ratio (proportion males) in second figs correlated negatively with clutch size, with males produced even in very small clutches. Ceratosolen fusciceps lay mainly male eggs first and then female eggs. Our results demonstrate that foundresses do not generally lay or attempt to lay a ‘fixed’ number of males, but do ‘reset to zero’ their sex allocation strategy on entering a second fig. With decreasing clutch size, gall failure increased, probably due to reduced pollen. We conclude that C. fusciceps foundresses can use their own egg loads as a cue to facultatively adjust their offspring sex ratios and that foundresses may also produce more ‘insurance’ males when they can predict increasing rates of offspring mortality.  相似文献

The relationship between reproductive status and body size in foundresses of Ropalidia plebeiana, an Australian endemic paper wasp forming huge aggregations of nests, was examined. Foundresses with developed ovaries (laying foundresses) in multifoundress colonies tended to be larger than foundresses in single‐foundress colonies and foundresses with undeveloped ovaries (non‐laying foundresses). However, the laying foundress was not always the largest of the foundresses in a colony. Body shape in foundresses varied according to simple allometric growth, while foundresses and first brood females diverged in their growth parameters in the preimaginal stage.  相似文献

Abstract  1. Colony survivorship and numbers of nest cells, pupae, and adult females were monitored throughout the nesting season for a cohort of 78 colonies of the paper wasp Polistes metricus Say. Thirty-nine colonies received a twice-weekly nourishment supplement of honey during pre-emergence and early emergence phases of the colony cycle; 39 colonies were unsupplemented controls.
2. Colony survivorship was unaffected by the supplemental nourishment. Loss of colonies to predation differed among three sites but was unaffected by supplementation.
3. Honey-supplemented colonies constructed more nest cells than did control colonies but this effect was not expressed until after supplementation had ceased.
4. Honey-supplemented colonies produced more pupae than did control colonies but the number of adult females at nests did not differ between supplemented and control colonies. Because honey-supplemented colonies had more offspring but fewer of them remained as workers at the nest, honey supplementation led to a lower frequency of workers and corresponding higher frequency of reproductives than in control colonies.
5. In a second year of study, colony survivorship and numbers of nest cells, pupae, and adult females were monitored from late pre-emergence until the end of the nesting season for a cohort of 32 colonies of Polistes metricus . In 16 colonies, trophallactic saliva was taken from final-instar larvae on nine dates in the late pre-emergence and early emergence periods; 16 colonies served as controls.
6. Saliva-diminished colonies had lower survivorship, fewer nest cells, fewer pupae, and fewer adult females at the nest than did control colonies.
7. These results show that variation in nourishment in the early to mid phases of the colony cycle can have significant effects on the subsequent colony demographics of Polistes metricus paper wasps.  相似文献

We maintained pregnant Sphenomorphus indicus under four thermal conditions for the whole gestation period to assess the effects of gestation temperature on offspring phenotypes. Parturition occurred between late June and early August, with females at high body temperatures giving birth earlier than those maintained at low body temperatures. Litter size, litter mass, and postpartum body mass did not differ among treatments, and females with relatively higher fecundity produced smaller offspring. Females gave birth to predominantly female offspring (85.7% of the 14 sexed offspring were females) at 24 °C and to predominantly male offspring (76.5% of the 17 sexed offspring were males) at 28 °C. Females with the opportunity to regulate body temperature produced a mix of sexes that did not differ from equality. Offspring produced in different treatments differed in head size, hind-limb length, and tympanum length, but not in snout-vent length, tail length, body mass, fore-limb length, and eye length. Offspring produced at 28 °C were not only smaller in head size, but also shorter in hind-limb length and tympanum length than those offspring produced at lower temperatures. Offspring produced at 28 °C performed more poorly in the racetrack and grew more slowly than offspring produced in the other three treatments. Taken together, our results show that S. indicus might be a temperature-dependent sex determination species and that offspring phenotypes are impaired at high gestation temperatures but maximized at relatively low gestation temperatures.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 453–463.  相似文献

Summary: Pre-nesting foundresses of Belonogaster petiolata (Degeer) displayed a continuous variation in body size and ovarian development, wherein the majority (96%) of females possessed well-developed or developing ovaries. The latter indicates that most foundresses, including those that ultimately become subordinates in multiple-foundress colonies, have the potential to lay eggs when they first initiate or join nests. Relatively small differences in ovarian development between associated females at the start of the nesting season became pronounced over the course of the pre-emergence and early pre-matrifilial period concurrently with the differentiation of their roles as queens or subordinates. In pre-matrifilial colonies, ovarian development of queens was significantly greater than that of subordinates. Dominance rank and ovarian development among subordinates in pre-matrifilial colonies were not correlated, probably due to advanced ovarian regression in these females. The majority (96.5%) of foundresses from three successive nesting seasons were inseminated and would therefore have been capable of laying female-producing (i.e. worker- and queen-destined) eggs. Although queens of B. petiolata were not significantly larger than subordinates, they were the largest females in 41% of colonies. Similarly, #-foundresses were larger on average than %-foundresses. This indicates that body size may contribute to social and reproductive dominance, but is probably of secondary importance compared with hormonal and nutritional factors. These and previously published findings from B. petiolata suggest that the fitness benefits of associating with other foundresses during colony foundation may be largely mutualistic, and favoured by individual selection in addition to kin selection.  相似文献

  1. Sociality is not common among parasitoid hymenopterans, but members of the ectoparasitoid genus Sclerodermus (in the aculeate family Bethylidae) may form multi-foundress groups, producing and tending a single brood (of combined parentage) on a large host until offspring maturity. While individual foundresses can benefit more from reproducing within groups rather than alone, recent studies have indicated that there are conflicts of interest between co-foundresses at the time of host suppression and during brood production, some of which may be mediated by intrinsic or acquired dominance. Evidence for overtly agonistic interactions has, however, been lacking.
  2. Here, we report that resident Sclerodermus guani Xiao et Wu females that have suppressed a host, can either accept introduced intruder females as co-foundresses without aggression or repel, and even kill, intruders by biting and stinging them.
  3. Residents were more likely to exhibit aggression when they had commenced oviposition, when more days had passed since oviposition, when they were larger than the intruder, when the intruder was a non-sibling, or when they were the sole resident rather than being in a group of two residents.
  4. We conclude that cooperatively brooding in Sclerodermus can be conditional on the evolutionary interests of foundresses with temporal priority on a host and their ability to repel potential co-foundresses.
