Seasonal parameters of infection by the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii in the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Phalacrocoracidae) and their relation with feeding and infection in fishes from River Valdivia, Chile, were determined. The prevalences of infection in birds were similar during seasons, whereas mean intensity and percentages of adult gravid females were higher in spring and summer, respectively. For fishes no seasonal differences were found in infection. Cormorant diet varied seasonally in relation to fish prey consumed and this can be related to seasonal differences in infection parameters of birds. The high infection in birds should be considered as a potential risk for salmoniculture.  相似文献

Mosquitoes are a major vector for tropical diseases, so understanding aspects that modify their population dynamics is vital for their control and protecting human health. Maximising the efficiency of control strategies for reducing transmission risk requires as a first step the understanding of the intrinsic population dynamics of vectors. We fitted a set of density-dependent and density-independent models to the long-term time series of six tropical mosquito species from northern Australia. The models’ strength of evidence was assessed using Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC c ), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and jack-knifed cross-validation (C-V). Density dependence accounted for more than 99% of the model weight in all model-selection methods, with the Gompertz-logistic (Cushing model) being the best-supported model for all mosquito species (negative density feedback expressed even at low densities). The second-most abundant species, Aedes vigilax (a saline breeder), showed no spatial heterogeneity in its density-dependent response, but the remaining five species had different intrinsic growth rates across 11 study sites. Population densities of saline species were high only during the late dry to early wet season following the highest tides of the month or early flood rains when swamps were mostly saline, whereas those of freshwater species were highest during the mid-wet and mid-dry seasons. These findings demonstrate remarkably strong density dependence in mosquito populations, but also suggest that environmental drivers, such as rainfall and tides, are important in modifying seasonal densities. Neglecting to account for strong density feedback in tropical mosquito populations will clearly result in less effective control.  相似文献

Synopsis The Okavango Delta is a large inland swamp in northern Botswana which receives an annual flood from the highlands of southern Angola. There are distinct fish taxocenes in the Okavango which can be separated from each other by the physical characteristics of the different habitat types with which they co-evolved. An account is given of the ecology and conservation of the fishes of the Okavango Delta. Their response to the annual flood regime, and the environmental factors that limit their distribution and abundance, are described. In the northern riverine floodplain and perennial swamp a higher species richness and ichthyomass was recorded than in the seasonal swamp and drainage rivers. Suggestions are made on the conservation of Okavango fishes taking into account the ecological characteristics of the Delta.  相似文献

Wet and dry calorific values (energy densities) and total energy content of lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus , sprat Sprattus sprattus , Atlantic herring Clupea harengus , whiting Merlangius merlangus , saithe Pollachius virens and cod Gadus morhua , were measured. Calorific values varied both within and between species. Larger fish tended to have higher calorific values than small ones, particularly when considered in terms of wet weight, but there was considerable temporal variation. The calorific values and body weights of sandeels larger than 10 cm showed marked seasonal trends and in consequence the total energy content of a sandeel of given length in summer is approximately double the spring value. The calorific values of herring and sprat also varied from month to month but seasonal cycles were less obvious. Whiting varied least. Both calorific values and total energy content of individual sprat were very variable in summer (the spawning season of this species). Because there is so much intraspecific variation, care must be taken when assessing the relative merits (in terms of energy) of different species as prey. The practical difficulties of obtaining reliable data on wet calorific values are discussed and the use of dry calorific values and dry weight/length relationships is recommended.  相似文献

The structure and temporal variations of the fish community in the intertidal estuarine zone of shallow mud areas have been poorly studied in China. This paper analyses the diel, semi‐lunar and seasonal patterns of fish assemblages in the Yangtze estuary in 2006. Fish were collected by consecutive day and night samplings using tide‐stow‐nets deployed parallel to each other in three stations. A total of 56 fish species belonging to 21 families was caught during the study period. The family Cyprinidae dominated with 25 species. Freshwater fish species were the important dominant commercial fishery species and well represented with five species (sharpbelly Hemiculter bleekeri, goldfish Carassius auratus, bream Parabramis pekinensis, likely‐bream Pseudobrama simony, and glossy yellow catfish Pelteobagrus nitidus) in the three stations. Juvenile fishes dominated the fish community, comprising 93.9% in station 1 and 96.6% in station 2 of the total abundance. The number of fish species in day tides was slightly lower than those in night tides in spring and summer, but the opposite in other seasons. In neap tides, the numbers and abundance of fish species were both lower than those in the spring tides. Fish abundance was lowest in winter, increasing during spring and summer (March–September) in both stations 1 and 2, with obviously large fluctuations in each season. The pattern of habitat selection of fishes could effectively decrease the food competition of intraspecies or interspecies and favour the growth and nursing of young fishes. These findings indicate that the intertidal zones in the estuary may serve as important nursery areas for fish communities.  相似文献

Shallow-water vegetated estuarine habitats, notably seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh, are known to be important habitats for many species of small or juvenile fish in temperate Australia. However, the movement of fish between these habitats is poorly understood, and yet critical to the management of the estuarine fisheries resource. We installed a series of buoyant pop nets in adjacent stands of seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh in order to determine how relative abundance of fishes varied through lunar cycles. Nets were released in all habitats at the peak of the monthly spring tide for 12 months, and in the seagrass habitat at the peak of the neap tide also. The assemblage of fish in each habitat differed during the spring tides. The seagrass assemblage differed between spring and neap tide, with the neap tide assemblage showing greater abundances of fish, particularly those species which visited the adjacent habitats when inundated during spring tides. The result supports the hypothesis that fish move from the seagrass to the adjacent mangrove and saltmarsh during spring tides, taking advantage of high abundances of zooplankton, and use seagrass as a refuge during lower tides. The restoration and preservation of mangrove and saltmarsh utility as fish habitat may in some situations be linked to the proximity of available seagrass.  相似文献

Changes in fish assemblages between the zones above and below Funil dam in Southeastern Brazil were investigated to evaluate the possible impacts of this impoundment in two contrasting seasons: summer/wet and winter/dry. We expect differences in fish assemblage structure and in environmental conditions between seasons and between the reservoir and the zone downriver of the dam. A total of 3,579 individuals comprising 38 species, including six non-natives, were collected. As expected, the comparatively high habitat complexity and water flow regime of the downriver zone favored a richer and more abundant fish assemblage compared with the reservoir, especially in the wet season. In this period, water covers part of the riparian vegetation, increasing habitat availability and nutrient input. Additionally, the dam prevents upriver migration of rheophilics fish species such as the Characiformes Prochilodus lineatus and Leporinus copelandii, and the Siluriformes Pimelodus fur and Pimelodus maculatus, thus increasing shoals below the dam. Although the reservoir represents a simplified ecosystem highly influenced by non-native top predator species (e.g. the Perciformes Cichla kelberi and Plagioscion squamosissimus), seasonal processes (e.g. water level fluctuations and flood pulses) seem to play a role in structuring of the fish assemblage. Environmental variables, mainly turbidity, temperature, and conductivity were significantly associated to spatial-temporal patterns of fish assemblage. In this freshwater tropical reservoir, the spatial scale, rather than the seasonal changes in environmental variables, was the dominant factor structuring fish assemblage in the reservoir and in the zone downriver of the dam.  相似文献

Our understanding of geographic patterns of species diversity and the underlying mechanisms is increasing rapidly, whereas the temporal variation in these patterns remains poorly understood. We examined the seasonal species richness and species turnover patterns of non‐volant small mammals along three subtropical elevational gradients in southwest China. Small mammal diversity was surveyed in two seasons (early wet season and late wet season) using a standardized sampling protocol. The comparison of species richness patterns between two seasons indicated a temporal component in magnitude and shape, with species richness at high elevations clearly increased during the late wet season. Species richness demonstrated weak correlations with modelled temperature and precipitation. The elevational pattern of species turnover measured by Chao‐Sørenson similarity index also changed seasonally, even though the temporal pattern varied with scale. Species turnover between neighboring elevations at high elevations was slower in the late wet season. Meanwhile, there was an acceleration of species turnover along the whole range of the gradient. The seasonal change in species diversity patterns may be due to population‐level increases in abundance and elevational migration, whereas seasonal variation in factors other than temperature and precipitation may play a greater role in driving seasonal diversity patterns. Our study strongly supports the seasonality in elevational patterns of small mammal diversity in subtropical montane forests. Thus it is recommended that subsequent field surveys consider temporal sampling replicate for elevational diversity studies.  相似文献

Summary Large mammals that formerly occupied the Kariba basin of the Middle Zambezi Valley have, since it was flooded, been forced to live in a restricted range of deciduous woodland habitats. Feeding records in a study area on the shore of Lake Kariba showed that most herbivore species were browsers, and that only the tree components of their diets varied significantly between vegetation types. The common species varied a proportion of their diet seasonally. However, each depended upon a small range of food staples which differed from those of other species and acted as food refuges for part of the year. Diets overlapped during the wet season because of diversification, and in the late dry season because of common use of a restricted range of plants remaining green. There was a good correlation between the ability of a species to avoid dietary overlap and its biomass in the study area. The chance of interspecific competition occurring increased in the late dry season when most of the species would formerly have migrated from the study area to the flood plain. Despite the enforced occupation of only part of their former annual range the more common herbivores maintained a considerable degree of ecological separation through utilisation of different foods.  相似文献

基于2006年春(5月)、夏(7月)、秋(9月下旬)和冬季(2月)对长江口低盐淡水区水域进行的潮间带鱼类调查结果,分析了鱼类种类及丰度的半月相及其季节变化. 结果表明:长江口低盐淡水区水域潮间带鱼类共有53种;其中鲤科鱼类最多,虾虎鱼科次之,其他科较少. 2顶网具渔获物的鱼类种类和丰度均以春、夏、秋季较高,冬季最低.各个季节的平均种类数和平均丰度均为小潮期小于大潮期. Shannon-Weaver指数(H′)在一个潮周期内的波动幅度较大,且小潮期H′值略低于大潮期. 对鱼类种类丰度进行聚类分析发现,冬季鱼类聚成一组,春、夏和秋季聚成一组. 从整年的情况来看,潮间带鱼类的丰度变化与水温的相关性最高;与潮高的相关性次之;而与盐度的相关性最小.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of the African pike,Hepsetus odoe, was studied over a four-year period in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Spawning takes place between August and May in different parts of the Delta. Fish in the seasonal swamp and drainage rivers have a truncated spawning season between August and January, while those in the perennial swamp have an extended spawning season from September to May. The variation in spawning season appears to be associated with the degree of environmental perturbation brought about by the annual flood cycle. Male and female pike mature at 140 and 160 mm standard length (SL) respectively. Females predominate in the population and produce an average of 6440 eggs per season and are multiple spawners. The number of eggs per spawning averages about 2630. The eggs are deposited in a foam nest which is guarded by the parents. Newly hatched embryos suspend themselves below the nest via a cement gland and remain in the vicinity of the spawning site until they have reached a relatively advanced stage in their development. The larval period is relatively short which implies that this species undergoes nearly a direct development. Foam nests appear to be a predator avoidance mechanism as well as an adaptation to fluctuating oxygen and water levels. The initiation of the spawning season is more closely associated with water temperature than with the annual flood cycle which appears to be more important in regulating the size of the spawning stock.  相似文献

Seasonality of nutrient dynamics in three morphologically different seagrass species and their sediments was examined for 1 year between November 2006 and November 2007 at four sites in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. The smaller species, Cymodocea serrulata and Halophila ovalis, showed major seasonal variation in shoot density, above- and belowground biomass, much more than expected from seasonal changes in water temperature and light conditions. All parameters showed minimum values in the dry season due to desiccation during neap tides. In contrast Enhalus acoroides showed less seasonal variation. Only limited seasonality was found in tissue N content of all species, whereas tissue P content responded to the low P concentration in the water column during the wet season. There were no differences in sediment conditions among species, and nutrient pools were generally low. Furthermore there were no significant spatial differences in seagrass and sediment nutrient dynamics, despite varying anthropogenic activity at the study sites, reflecting the oligotrophic conditions in this region.  相似文献

Arthropods were collected by insecticidal tree fogging on the understorey tree species Rinorea beniensis Engler (Violaceae) in Budongo Forest, a seasonal rain forest in Uganda. Eight trees were fogged in adjacent plots of primary, selectively logged and swamp forest during the wet season and again in the dry season. In all forest types, Psocoptera, parasitoid Hymenoptera, and especially Formicidae and Auchenorrhyncha were more abundant during the dry season, while Ensifera, Heteroptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Coleoptera were more abundant during the wet season. Seasonal change in arthropod composition was very low in the swamp forest located near a stream, where permanent water supply is crucial for the development of the distinct swamp vegetation, with comparatively constant microclimatic conditions all over the year. Seasonal change increased in the primary forest, and shows most significant changes of athropod abundance between dry and wet season in the selectively logged forest which also had the highest heterogeneity in forest structures. Especially small and soft bodied arthropods probably accumulate along a humidity gradient in the dense canopies of Rinorea during the dry season, when the forest floor outside the swamp forest is dry. This effect, which is also strongest in the selectively logged forest, leads to a much higher density of canopy dwelling arthropods during the dry season.  相似文献

We sampled litter frogs in an 1800-ha mid-elevation seasonal forest in southeastern Brazil. One hundred 8 * 8-m plots were sampled during the dry/cold season and wet/warm season (unburned areas); we also examined the effects of fire in recently burned areas. A total of 267 frogs (305 g), belonging to 16 species (4 families) were caught. A single species comprised 78.5 percent of the individuals in the dry/cold season and 54.3 percent in the wet/warm season. The density of individuals did not change significantly with season, biomass did. Density and biomass of frogs were positively correlated with altitude. A Mantel test indicated that biological data (species and their abundance) were significantly associated with environmental parameters. The burned areas showed low values in richness, density and biomass of frogs. Harsh seasonal climate and a history of human disturbance may produce the low observed diversity values. The greater densities of frogs in sites of higher elevation may primarily result from mist-generated humidity, which diminishes the harshness of the dry/cold season in relation to lower sites.  相似文献

Migratory behaviour in relation to tides was investigated in the mudskipper Periophthalmus modestus at a small estuary in southern Japan. Fish remained and fed on the tideland at low tides, but migrated along the water edge and clung to the wall of the bank above high tidemark at high tides. The number of the mudskippers clung to the wall of the bank at high tides increased from spring to summer with an increase in air temperature, but then decreased as air temperature became lower. The seasonal fluctuation of the number of clinging fish was positively correlated to that of air temperature, and negatively correlated to that of dissolved oxygen. Since metabolic rate increases with the increase of environmental temperature, the migratory and clinging behaviours may reflect behavioural adaptation to terrestrial life in terms of oxygen respiration.  相似文献

Summary The hypothesis that seasonality in the production of fleshy fruits in temperate regions is the result of selection by avian seed dispersal agents or avian seed predators was tested in a temperate wet sclerophyll forest in south-eastern Australia. I determined whether ten common fleshy-fruited species produced fruits when potential avian seed dispersers were most abundant or avian seed predators were least abundant. The season of fruit production was not correlated with avian disperser abundance nor with seasonal changes in avian seed predators. Peak fruiting occurred during autumn but fruit-eating birds were equally abundant from spring through to autumn. Avian seed predators (parrots) did not show any seasonal variation in abundance. If dispersers are influencing fruiting seasonality in wet sclerophyll forest, it is likely that changes in social behaviour and feeding patterns of dispersers during autumn, rather than increases in abundance, will be an important influence on fruiting patterns in wet sclerophyll forest. However, environmental and life history factors may also influence phenology.  相似文献

1. We investigated the seasonal variation of biological traits and the influence of interannual rainfall variability on this pattern. Using long‐term survey data (6–19 years) from an intermittent and a perennial stream in the Mediterranean‐climate region of northern California, we examined 16 fuzzy‐coded biological traits (e.g. maximum size, life cycle duration, and mode of respiration). 2. Seasonal habitat variability is higher in the intermittent stream than in the perennial stream. During the winter and spring wet‐season both streams flood; however, during the summer dry‐season, the intermittent stream forms isolated pools in (occasionally drying completely). 3. Seasonal habitat variability influenced both taxonomic and biological trait composition. Distinct taxonomic communities were present in each season, particularly in the intermittent stream. The intermittent stream also exhibited more seasonal variation in biological traits than the perennial stream. 4. Despite statistically significant seasonal variation, trait composition was relatively stable among seasons in comparison with taxonomic composition and abundance. Taxonomic composition varied considerably between seasons, because of high seasonal and interannual replacement of taxa resulting from seasonal habitat changes. 5. The seasonality of taxonomic composition and abundance was sensitive to interannual rainfall variability. In dry years, the taxonomic composition of communities was more similar between seasons than in wet years, while trait composition was relatively insensitive to rainfall variability. 6. Despite high seasonal variation in abundance and taxonomic composition, biological traits of aquatic macroinvertebrates varied less and exhibited seasonal stability, which may be a result of the unpredictability and harshness of stream environments.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate environmental influences on fish distribution and to assess the extent to which concepts in river ecology accommodate levels of spatio-temporal heterogeneity of fish assemblages in a 1,080-km long tropical river. A total of 25 sites were sampled between November 2002 and March 2003 in two seasons (summer/wet versus winter/dry). A thermal gradient separating the upper reaches from the lower reaches was detected. The middle-upper reaches showed higher conductivity and lower dissolved oxygen and pH levels compared with the other reaches. Although some significant associations were found between some fish abundance and environmental variables, the most abundant species (Tilapia rendalli, Geophagus brasiliensis, and Oligosarcus hepsetus) occurred in most sites and under most environmental conditions. Fish community structure varied more in space (longitudinal) than through time (seasonal). The community in the lower reach species was more diverse in comparison with the other reaches. Differences in the fish assemblage structure among the longitudinal river sections appear to have been influenced by the effects of damming, and seem to be partially consistent with the Serial Discontinuity Concept, which views dams as discontinuities within the river continuum. Only the lower river reach showed seasonal differences in the fish community structure, attributable to the influence of flooding. Management plans and biodiversity conservation will benefit by considering the effects of dam disruption and flood increased connectivity to the lotic systems. Handling editor: J. Trexler  相似文献

The western Irish Sea is an important spawning and nursery ground for many commercially exploited fish. Spawning begins in the Irish coastal regions in early spring, and moves offshore as the season develops. As a result of the onset of seasonal heating in spring, stratification isolates a dome of cold bottom winter water in the deep (>100 m) basin of the western Irish Sea. The resultant density fields drive a cyclonic gyre which dominates the circulation of the region during late spring and summer and is characterized by anticlockwise current speeds which exceed 0.2 ms–1, after removal of tides. Surveys of pelagic juvenile (0-group) fish in 1994, 1995 and 1996, showed that they were coincident with the centre of the gyre. Physical data from 1994 and 1995, were used to describe the horizontal and vertical structure of the water column and the associated circulation regime. The behaviour and swimming speeds of pelagic juvenile fish were insufficient to explain their apparent shift in abundance away from the coast to the central western Irish Sea. Drifter and current data suggested that their entrainment into the gyre could provide both the transport and retention mechanisms.  相似文献
