A survey of black scaleSaissetia oleae (Olivier) parasitoids present in southern California was conducted between September 1987 and September 1989. From 308 collections of black scale-infested citrus, olive, and oleander twigs from 19 sites in southern California, 1,610 specimens were collected. Nine primary and six secondary parasitoid species were identified. Four primary species were abundant in southern California:Metaphycus bartletti Annecke & Mynhardt,M. helvolus (Compere),Scutellista caerulea (Fonscolombe) (=S. cyanea Motschulsky), andDiversinervus elegans Silvestri. The most common secondary parasitoids wereMarietta mexicana (Howard),Cheiloneurus noxius Compere, andTetrastichus minutus (Howard). In the coastal region of southern California,M. bartletti was the most abundant parasitoid, followed in order byD. elegans, S. Caerulea, andM. helvolus. In the intermediate and interior regions,M. helvolus was most abundant.D. elegans was second most abundant in the intermediate region, but was rare in the interior region.M. bartletti was second in abundance in the interior region and third in the intermediate region.   相似文献

The geographical distribution of the parasitoid species associated with fruit flies in Costa Rica is presented. In a study of 319 fruit samples infested with larvae of fruit flies, collected from 135 localities, 8 parasitoid species were recovered from 11.0% of the fruit samples. Two species are considered to be indigenous, two were introduced for the biological control ofCeratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in this country, at least 3 unidentified species of eucoiline cynipoids and one species of uncertain origin was found for the first time. The identified parasitoids were:Doryctobracon crawfordi (Viereck) (indigenous),D. areolatus (Szépligeti) (indigenous),Biosteres longicaudatus Ashmead (introduced),Aceratoneuromyia indica (Silvestri) (introduced) andTrichopria sp. (indigenous?). The introduced species were more frequently associated withAnastrepha spp. than withC. capitata. The need for systematic monitoring of populations of released parasitoid species is suggested.  相似文献

Three new species ofDasylirion and a new variety ofD. longissimum Lem. from the mountains of northern Mexico are described and illustrated. Two of the new species are from northwestern Mexico:D. gentryi, with large, rosecolored fruits and glossy, non-waxy leaves; andD. sereke, characterized by roundish fruits with an unusuall large style.Dasylirion miquihuanense is a new species from northeastern Mexico with narrow, strictly upright leaves and widely separated marginal prickles. TheDasylirion longissimum complex consists of two species,D. quadrangulatum S. Wats andD. longissimum Lem., characterized by narrow, quadrangulate leaves with reduced or absents marginal prickles. Distinguishing features of these two species, which have often been confused, are presented andD. longissimum var.treleasei, characterized by small flowers and fruits, is described.  相似文献

Two new monotypic genera,Didonica andUtleya, are described, withD. pendula from Panama andU. costaricensis from Costa Rica.Disterigma trimera (Panama),D. utleyorum (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador),Lateropora santafeensis (Panama),Lysiclesia panamensis (Panama),Macleania talamancensis (Costa Rica),Themistoclesia costaricensis (Costa Rica) andT. horquetensis (Panama),Vaccinium costaricense andV. orosiense (both from Costa Rica) and V.jefense (Panama) are all described as new. New combinations are provided for the PanamanianVaccinium floccosum (=Symphysia floccosa) and the West IndianVaccinium racemosum (=Symphysia racemosa). Keys are provided for the Central American species ofDisterigma andThemistoclesia, the species ofLateropora andLysiclesia, and the Costa Rican and Panamanian species ofVaccinium. Little is known about the natural enemies of the leafhopperDalbulus spp. (Homoptera: Cicadellidae). Searches for its dryinid (wasps) parasitoids were made in Jalisco, Mexico. Jalisco contains the greatest number ofDalbulus species, and is considered to be near to the center of origin of this leafhopper genus and its host plants: maize, teosintes (Zea spp.) and gamagrasses (Tripsacum spp.). The dryinidGonatopus bartletti was found parasitizingD. maidis on maize and on annual teosinteZea mays spp.parviglumis. G. flavipes was found parasitizingD. elimatus on perennial teosinteZ. perennis; and a new speciesG. moyaraygozai andAnteon ciudadi parasitizingD. quinquenotatus onTripsacum pilosum andT. dactyloides. Parasitism by dryinids was found at altitudes of 680–2,000 m.Dalbulus maidis, the leafhopper species which causes the greatest losses in maize in Latin America, was found to be parasitized from 680–1,760 m. TheDalbulus species associated with annual host plants (maize andZ. mays spp.parviglumis) were parasitized by dryinids during the rainy season, while theDalbulus species associated with perennial host plants (Z. perennis andTripsacum) were parasitized by dryinids during both the rainy and dry season. The greatest diversity of dryinid parasitoids ofDalbulus spp. and the highest levels of parasitism were recorded from perennial plants, indicating that such species are reservoirs of natural enemies ofDalbulus spp.  相似文献

Five species ofDimorphotheca, seventeen species ofOsteospermum, and one species each ofCastalis andChrysanthemoides were evaluated at Chico, California for crop potential as a source of dimorphecolic acid. Several species includingD. sinuata were highly susceptible to a number of diseases. Date of planting strongly influenced flowering period ofD. sinuata andD. pluvialis. D. cuneata showed the most promise for crop development. It had limited disease, relatively good seed retention and cold-tolerance, and considerable variability. With improved disease resistance,D. cuneata could be handled as a perennial seed crop. Its lightweight seed, an important disadvantage, is associated with a high proportion of winged to unwinged seeds.Osteospermum caulescens, O. ecklonis, andO. muricatum also have characteristics that favor crop development.O. ecklonis probably could be handled effectively as a winter annual. Seed of these three species had bushel weights of 30 to 41 pounds, compared with four to five pounds forD. cuneata andD. sinuata. Some preliminary germination work showed seed dormancy, which is probably associated with an after-ripening requirement. Overall, the agronomic characteristics that need improvement were disease resistance, seed retention, and seed form. Prospects for agronomic improvement of the most promising species should be good, because variability was evident even in small test populations.  相似文献

Two new species ofDelitschia are described from submerged wood;D. palmietensis collected in the Palmiet River in Durban Westville, South Africa andD. fasciatispora from the Black River, Mauritius. This brings the total ofDelitschia species known from non-coprophilous habitats to four.Delitschia palmietensis andD. fasciatispora are described and illustrated with light micrographs and discussed in relation to other species in the genus. To reveal the genetic mechanism of host selection in a monophagous fruit flyDrosophila sechellia, olfactory responses and oviposition preferences of this species were compared with those of closely related polyphagous species,D. simulans andD. melanogaster. Adult flies ofD. sechellia were strongly attracted to the ripe fruit ofMorinda citrifolia which is known to be the sole breeding site of this species. They were also attracted to the odor ofn-caproic acid which is contained in the ripe fruit ofM. citrifolia and is presumably responsible for the characteristic odor of the fruit. In contrast,D. simulans andD. melanogaster showed a strong repulsion ton-caproic acid. In parallel with the olfactory responses,D. sechellia females laid eggs preferentially on a medium containingn-caproic acid, to which the other two species showed an aversion. Genetic analyses using the hybrid progeny betweenD. sechellia andD. simulans suggested that the species differences in these behaviors are controlled by gene(s) located on the second chromosome.  相似文献

Psathyrella hypertropicalis, a new species, is described from a high mountain (Cofre de Perote) in the State of Veracruz, Mexico above the subtropical zone. This species is intermediate betweenP. velutina of the temperate regions andP. sepulchralis from the subtropical regions of Mexico. A list of the 26 species ofPsathyrella of Mexico is presented, of which 21 are from the tropics and subtropics, three from the temperate regions (P. velutina, P. spadicea, andP. hypertropicalis), and two with a broad distribution (P. candolleana andP. disseminata). The extent of intraspecific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity was investigated in isolates ofPhytophthora capsici,P. citricola, P. citrophthora, P. megakarya, P. palmivora, andP. parasitica that represented a wide range of host plants and geographic origins. Phenograms were constructed following the analysis of restriction fragment patterns that were generated by several endonucleases. The six species showed different degrees of mtDNA diversity. Restriction fragment patterns inP. palmivora andP. parasitica were very uniform. Distinct subgroups could be distinguished inP. megakarya andP. citrophthora that correlated with the geographic origin or the host plant, respectively. These subgroups did not seem to be closely related to each other. High degrees of diversity were also evident inP. citricola andP. capsici. Although some isolates ofP. capsici had identical mtDNA patterns, no distinct subgroups were found that could be correlated with either a specific host plant or geographic origin. InP. capsici andP. parasitica variation in nuclear DNA was much more pronounced as compared to mtDNA. InP. capsici both types of analysis correlated well. Because of very limited variation of mtDNA inP. parasitica a comparison between the two phenograms was difficult.  相似文献

Two ancyrocephalid monogeneans collected in Cameroon are described:Enterogyrus crassus n. sp. from the stomach ofTilapia nyongana andE. amieti n. sp. from the stomach ofSarotherodon galilaeus sanagaensis. The simultaneous occurrence ofE. cichlidarum Paperna, 1963 in the stomach of these two host species is also reported. The specificity of the two new species is discussed along with the value of haptor morphology (cupped or tongue-shaped) as a specific character in the taxonomy of the genusEnterogyrus.  相似文献

Nine populations of three species ofNephotettix (Insecta: Hemiptera) from Peninsular Malaysia were analysed for nine enzymes comprising 11 loci. Nei's (Genetics 89, 583, 1978) genetic distance,D, betweenN. virescens andN. malayanus was 0.181, that betweenN. virescens andN. nigropictus was 0.283, and that betweenN. malayanus andN. nigropictus was 0.203. The genetic distance betweenN. nigropictus from rice plant and from the weed-grassL. hexandra at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was 0.004 and their genetic identity was 0.996, thus indicating that this insect species feeds on both host plants. The proportion of polymorphic loci and the observed heterozygosities were higher inN. nigropictus, with a wider range of host plants, than inN. virescens andN. malayanus, restricted to rice andL. hexandra, respectively.  相似文献
